Obama’s Cabinet Picks

Yesterday President-Elect Barack Obama talked about "the blend" in the cabinet — and it’s all but done now.

You see he’s kept his eye on both governing and politics.

In the White House, Obama has his core Chicago loyalists — Rahm Emanuel, Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod.

In his national security team, he has a group of coalition-builders — Hillary Clinton, a key Democrat for State Department, but also a veteran military-man Gen. Jim Jones as National Security Advisor, and of course President Bush’s Secretary of  Defense Bob Gates.

He has also kept his promise of reaching out beyond Washington for change: He has appointed reformers Shaun Donovan at HUD, Arne Duncan for Education, and Lisa Jackson at the EPA.

Obama’s managed to get a cabinet of diversity and confidence without engaging in any tokenism.

And yet there is some grumbling.

Some liberals are upset that they’re not well-represented  in the cabinet. Also, some women’s groups are saying that he’s not doing as well with women in his cabinet as former President Bill Clinton did, and only as well as George W. Bush did.

But he has nominated people to his cabinet with an eye toward fast-growing voter groups: Hispanics — both Gov. Bill Richardson for Commerce and Sen. Ken Salazar for Interior.

It’s the fastest growing voter group in the country and they’re being well represented.

Obama has also nominated Asians — Dr. Steven Chu at Energy and retired Army Gen. Eric Shinseki at Veterans’ Affairs — they’re another rising voter group.

And for Democrats , the southwest has been a real prime target area. And look what Obama has done — he’s selected Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, and Sen. Salazar from Colorado — trying to lock in gains in those key states.

It’s a group even Vice President Dick Cheney told ABC’s Jonathan Karl that he could agree with.

Good, solid, centrist cabinet. Run from the left, govern from the center.

It’s so very important what skin color or hormonal make-up people in key powerful positions in government have. Thank goodness he’s not picking people solely based on capabilities or experience, that would be…wacky!

With a few exceptions, I must say that this is shaping up to be an amazing cabinet. It is very strong on Foreign Policy and National Security – I’m especially pleased with the retention of Robert Gates. On the economy, the diversity of perspectives is amazing as well as highly talented. Times are tough now and we all need a President that brings political civility, makes wise economic policy that refrain from the excesses of the “progressive” wing of the Democratic party, and a wise foreign policy coupled with a very strong military. Obama needs to deliver these things and be President for ALL Americans, not just the most liberal elements of his party. I didn’t vote for him, but I’m happy to give him a chance!

Looks like Obama will be the second coming of Arnold. Arnold was voted in to save california. California is worse now than before. They want to raise taxes to fix their years of overspend, not looking to reduce spending. They are calling them fees now.
Rest of US, be prepared…

Where are all the republicans that were supposed to be in the Cabinet? And I hardly call Hillary Clinton a ‘centrist’ – she’s a socialist.

Posted by: ellsbells930 | December 17, 2008, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

It kills me how Republicans complained during the campaign, “Obama is the most liberal Senator and will govern from the far left!” And now they’re grumbling “where are ALL the Republicans?” As if two Republicans, many centrists and Bush’s own Secretary of Defense aren’t sufficient. Even Cheney has expressed satisfaction with this Cabinet. Obama will absolutely be unable to please some people no matter what he does. Keep up the good work, President Elect Obama!

Obama wants to hear from a diverse group of people – even evil, rotten Republicans – the man is a Saint!

Posted by: Kate1149 | December 18, 2008, 12:11 am 12:11 am

He is not afraid to bring in strong candidates. The fact that he put in two strong candidates who are republican speaks to his strength of character. He wants people who can lead and advise and who network different sectors. Very very different from the current president.. Now who was the democrat who Bush had in his cabinet? This man is trying to pull together a very very divided country.. If we will survive financially we must pull together.. Sad that before he is even president people are saying he will fail..Mr. Obama we are praying for your success because your success is all of our success. What do we gain if the republicans win or the democrats win and the country falters?

Some people just aren’t happy unless they’re complaining about something. I’ve seen in blogs and forums on the net “where’s all the change we were promised?” from people who can’t see that just the cabinet nominations constitute a great change from the Bush way of doing things. These complainers seem to expect Obama to make changes in policies TODAY – even though he won’t be president for another 30 days. I agree that that’s a long time to wait. Bush is making his farewell tour of the nations and networks, letting this nation get further and further into trouble, and not caring enough about anything but his “legacy” to do anything about it. I am ashamed that he is our president, and hope the nations of the world can forgive America after what he’s done. I sincerely hope the new Justice Department finds adequate grounds to prosecute Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and all others who had anything to do with waterboarding, rendition, or Guantanamo Bay.

people have to know some new faces, or some really new things to be introduced. This is not one thing, but I am afraid, quite different things. To blend, or to mingle, it is far more difficult than simply creating a picture.

Posted by: Yabin Li | December 18, 2008, 6:14 am 6:14 am

My prediction is a mediocre presidency.
If ever we needed people coming up with the ability to think outside the box and come up with original ideas, now is the time. We’re in deep, deep trouble thanks to Bush. You use the center when things are going well to stabilize gains and minimize losses. When in trouble you need to look further afield for new solutions because what’s in place isn’t working.
Obama, who never ever ran on the left, has not picked a cabinet capable of doing this. Instead, we’re most likely going to rerun old ideas. Like I said, a mediocre president which, considering the trouble we’re in, could be the final nail.

Posted by: jan | December 18, 2008, 6:18 am 6:18 am

Oh, and by the way George, the reasons you’re giving about the “excellence” of Obama’s picks are the political tactician’s reasons when looking ahead to the next election. As we all know, that has nothing whatever to do with actually running the country….

Posted by: jan | December 18, 2008, 6:32 am 6:32 am

1bluestocking -We’re grumbling, because Mr. Obama stated he would place Republicans in his cabinet. Where are they? All I see is a bunch of far left picks (except for Gates, who I believe is actually an Independent).

Posted by: ellsbells930 | December 18, 2008, 6:42 am 6:42 am

Back off and give it a chance to work. Why have we all turned into a bunch of constant complainers? Go about your business, work hard, play hard, do good and keep faith.

Posted by: Yankee | December 18, 2008, 6:58 am 6:58 am

We have been drug so far to the right over the last 8+ years (I’m including the republican congress activities during the Clinton years in that indictment) that what used to be middle of the road left is now considered extremist or far left, ellsbells. The end result has been a devastated nation, financially and morally.

Liberal and women’s groups are upset? Too bad for them. Nobody cares whether they’re upset or happy. They’re irrelevant.

Obama has used the liberal groups to his advantage.
Now he need them not anymore; they used their purpose.
So, he kicked them out of the window.
Obama has is a smart opportunist.

At Some point, you liberals are going to have to figure you you need to stand up and take your share of the blame.
YOU have controlled the legislative agenda for the past 23 months. NOT BUSH & NOT THE REPUBLICANS.
YOU are doomed to continue this downward spiral YOU created. Barney Frank should be stripped of all responsiblities concerning any commitees. The same for Chris Dodd.
Denocrats need to REPLACE Pelosi & Reid with new real leadership.

The conservative and centrist appointments may make political sense in the short term . The Economic appointments may help quiet financial markets in the short term. The choice of Rick Warren to give the inaugural invocation may temporarily satisfy evangelicals but under the present circumstances governing from the center really means keeping the status quo. Roosevelt also was elected as a moderate after a very conservative administration. Once elected, he was pushed leftward by a very militant labor movement. Without a similar groundswell from the grassroots, Obama will continue to drift rightward and the spirit of change he was elected on will dissipate into ineffectiveness and the hope will morph into cynicism.
What’s the point? Its time to build the groundswell from the grassroots. A resurgent labor and environmental movements can do just that.

It looks to me that all the so-called liberal grumbling about Obama’s cabinet choices, is being reported by conservative journalists who fail to mention what liberals are doing this grumbling. Isn’t it clear that this is just conservatives looking for holes to poke Obama with. It is the same disingenuiosness (lying) that conservatives have become famous for, and Americans have finally recognized them for the moral low lifes they really are.

Posted by: Rich | December 18, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am

There will always be grumbling from some sector of the population. Obama’s cabinet seems to be centrist oriented. In effect, he’s implemented a system of de facto checks and balances by having such a diverse group of cabinet heads. America should be happy, the man has basically put a system in place in which he himself will be kept under control. I guess you can’t please everyone.

The Pandering Messiah Shows His True Colors
And so it begins. Over the next 6 months more and more Obama maniacs will realize that Obama is not liberal, if anything he is a moderate conservative. I think he’ll be a good president, but he’s not a liberal and his priority issues are not social issues. I just don’t get why all these people are outraged. Did they seriously think that Obama was a big supporter of gay marriage?

Posted by: Judy | December 18, 2008, 10:25 am 10:25 am

It a shame that some people just don’t get it. How could you compare President elect Obama to Arnold of CA, how could you there is no correlation between them. Obama is an interlect;granted, no matter who he choses to his cabinet someone somewhere is gonna say some f$*1@..thing. Wake up people and think constructively. Just think b/4 you open your mouth.

Scott “Rest of US, be prepared…” You are on the mark with this post and my fear is the whole nation become like California, instead of TN, GA, AL. I live in CA and there is a mass exodus of business, an increase giant deficit ($41 billion), a legislature who only knows how to raise taxes, and a population that keeps electing them. Sounds a little like Congress doesn’t it? The U.S. is most likely looking at 8 years of recession, mininum.

If we call these guys “centrists” and “moderates” enough.. does that magically change their political ideals? Does misrepresenting what Cheney said change their political ideals? No. Overall, this is an ultra-partisan VERY left-leaning cabinet built to advise an ultra-partisan VERY, VERY left-leaning president. And please.. his “reaching out beyond Washington” has amounted to pulling in his corrupt Chicago buddies. This isn’t anything new for Washington, but calling it something other than “politics as usual” is a lie.

I thought ol’ Georgie boy was singing the praises of Obama’s cabinet on ABCNews because there was no “tokinism” in Obama’s choice of cabinet picks. Gee, George, looks like you’re a complete idiot. You see, because despite the fact that liberals claim to be color blind, they are anything but. Ask a liberal what they would rather have for the next 4 years: a cabinet that was highly competent, honest, and creative but loaded with all white males or a cabinet that was mediocre at best and riddled with ethical problems but included every minority and aggrieved group known to mankind, and they will pick the latter everytime. Because color, race, and “victim” status mean more to them than anything else.

Oh no, Obama turns out to be the moderate he always claimed to be, not the “liberal” the Republicans moaned about during the election. The so-called liberal grumbling is a put up by the right wing talking heads. Can anyone actually quote a liberal grumbling about Obama’s picks? George S. is either a very poor journalist or has a far right agenda, actually both.

Can anyone actually quote a liberal grumbling about Obama’s picks?
————————————–
“It is a grave disappointment to learn that pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at the inauguration of Barack Obama,” said Kathryn Kolbert, president of the liberal People for the American Way, in a statement e-mailed to reporters.’

Posted by: Mike_C | December 18, 2008, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

On NPR this morning bestselling author Michael Pollan, who wrote “In Defense of Food” and “Omnivore’s Dilemma,” provided his review of Vilsack’s nomination.
“I was very disappointed in that news conference … not to hear Vilsack use the word ‘food’ — or ‘eaters.’ And the interests of everybody except eaters was discussed: farmers, ranchers, people concerned about the land.” Pollan said it seems the choice may be just “agribusiness as usual.”
Jim Harkness, who promotes sustainable agriculture as president of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, also worries about Vilsack.
“Vilsack has shown a fairly conventional perspective on agriculture — particularly related to biotechnology and the siting of factory farms — that seems to indicate a status quo approach,” Harkness said. “But these are unconventional times.”

I think Obama’s cabinet looks just fine. We will see if it passes the elecric koolaid acid test.

Posted by: BikernAz | December 18, 2008, 4:34 pm 4:34 pm

To the me the trend is all too clear: Obama puts the onus of “reaching across the aisle” squarely on the the shoulders of the progressive left that got him elected. His choices so far indicate no requirement for a commensurate sacrifice from the “right,” and indeed things are shaping up to carry on the worst instincts of both the Bush and Clinton administrations. The only difference in our foreign policy will be that we now add we add a dash more “American idealism” into our bombing campaigns. We have in no way transcended the mindset of “American exceptionalism,” where we believe that our “good intentions” justify our too often abhorrent foreign adventures. And for those claiming that this is a left wing cabinet: he cross-wired his appointments. Exhibit A: Hillary Clinton is a social progressive, but a foreign policy hawk more to the right than her husband. If Obama wanted the “lefty” Clinton he would have given her Health and Social Services. But he want the the “Hillary the Hawk”—you remember, the one who four square behind the Iraq debacle, against talking with our enemies, and all for the “war on terror” and the Constitutional crises it engenders. Obama is jettisoning his vision and his mandate before he even gets into office. The writing was on the wall when he capitulated on FISA…downhill ever since.

Posted by: cameotoo | December 18, 2008, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm

It’s clear to me that Obama will not only walk the talk but walk the walk. Let’s all remember the Beatles song “Give peace a chance.”and give Obama some peace over the holidays. So far, he has done more than any other president elect in this short a time. Idon’t often agree with Newt Gingrich but he says if the republicans do not stop this negativity…they will never gain power again…

Why can’t I warm up to the Obama deal? I like this kind of mixed cabinet, I like Rahm and Hillary and Richardson and Gates.
This is really a tough question that I ask myself – then I realized what makes me uncomfortable – it’s the degree of insanity surrounding the whole Obama mystique. I find it to be a little too hyped or something.
Sorry Obamaites – I still don’t get it!
