Obama’s ‘Purpose Driven’ Pastor Draws Heat
ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Barack Obama is taking heat from his left flank for tapping the Rev. Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose Driven Life,” to deliver the invocation at his presidential inauguration.
“It is a grave disappointment to learn that pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at the inauguration of Barack Obama,” said Kathryn Kolbert, president of the liberal People for the American Way, in a statement e-mailed to reporters. “[T]he sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.”
Kolbert says Warren, who moderated an August forum between Obama and John McCain, enjoys a reputation as a “moderate” based on his “affable personality” and church’s work on issues like AIDS in Africa.
She goes on, however, to slam the pick for multiple reasons including differences with Warren on abortion and gay rights.
While Obama was chided on Thursday by the “People for the American Way” for his selection of Warren, the selection was hailed as smart strategically by David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network who wrote that the pick makes “a whole lot of sense.”
“Even though Warren and Obama disagree on the life issue, they do see eye to eye on many social justice issues,” wrote Brody on his “The Brody File” blog. “This move is also classic Obama because it is a signal to religious conservatives that he’s willing to bring in both sides to the faith discussion in this country. Obama has never shied away from that.”
Here is the full statement from the People for the American Way:
“People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert responded today to the news that Rev. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church will deliver the invocation at the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama:”
“It is a grave disappointment to learn that pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at the inauguration of Barack Obama.”
“Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church’s engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance. He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia. He has repeated the Religious Right’s big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.”
“I’m sure that Warren’s supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Senator Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church. But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.”
“Rick Warren gets plenty of attention through his books and media appearances. He doesn’t need or deserve this position of honor. There is no shortage of religious leaders who reflect the values on which President-elect Obama campaigned and who are working to advance the common good.”

This decision is worrisome to me personally as well …
With the fact that African Americans contributed a large part to passing anti-equal rights legislation in Prop 8, it will come as a Larger slap in the face with this choice of Rick Warren as the inaugural invocation officiate considering his role in the divisive campaign …

Has he even done anything With out a stir, controversal or a Scandal?
Maybe Obama is trying to reach out and lure the conservatives into his sect.
This is Mr Obama the man who’s campaign was like a Hyperactive kid with out their Ritalin.
Does Mr Obama truly beleive in anything other than himself?
He can always use Rev Wright of Father Plefger or Jessie Jackson. They would jump on the occassion.
Mr Obama is a cold and calculated person and makes his choices for a specfic reason.

IS OBAMA SETTING THE STAGE FOR INTRODUCING THE MUSLIM RELIGION?????
AFTER ALL, HE PROMISSED HE WOULD CAMPAIGN IN ALL 57 STATES —-ISLAM HAS 57 STATES —– AND HE DID TELL GEORGE STEPH. THAT HIS RELIGION WAS MUSLIM…
AND HE SAID THE BELLS FROM THE MOSQUES WERE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUND IN THE WORLD…..
AND HIS MIDDLE NAME – WHICH HE NEVER USED – IS MUSLIM- SAID HE WOULD USE ALL THREE NAMES WHEN HE IS INAUGERATED BECAUSE IT’S TRADITIONAL—-WHERE ? CERTAINLY NOT HERE……
IN COLLEGE HE WAS JUST BARRY TIL HE MADE THE TRIP AROUND THE WORLD IN ’81
AND WHEN HE CAME BACK SAID HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE CALLED BARRY ANYMORE = – IT WAS TOO AMERICAN……

The Borgen Project has informative statistics on addressing global poverty.
$30 billion ends world hunger
$550 billion is the US Defense budget
This organization has the ability, resources, and policy-makers to suppress the threat of global poverty by enacting legislation here in the US, which is tied to the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals. Please support organizations such as The Borgen Project so that we may rid the world of poverty.

If the liberals have their way anyone who doesn’t think like them should be cast aside for after all they know hat is best for everyone. Kathryn Kolbert and people like her hurt all Americans.
We are nation of laws not men, I suggest if these liberals don’t like our system to move on to another country or change the laws. Oh no say them for no country would put up with thier big mounths.
This is America where a person can have another view, a personal view and not be worried about organizations such as the one represented by Kathryn Kolbert.
I am sick of people like her blah blah – I suggest she spend her energy if she has any and go to work to change things the American way.

Good choice Obama. So far, he’s making great choices in who he surrounds himself with. Who cares if he doesn’t completely agree with everything Warren believes. I doubt the Clintons believe everything Billy Grahm believes. Especially the do not commit adultery thing. Some, (SOME NOT ALL) liberals need to grow up.

I see nothing in Warren’s history to speak of healthy God-centered theology. I see a history of using his church, his pulpit, his entire congregation to posit political & campaign operations, including the media circus of candidate interviews.
How much money did his congregation have to pay in order to be in the audience for those candidate interviews? Just ask….$2k-5k per person.
Rick Warren simply uses whatever he can for his self-agrandizement.
Barak, sorry, but I think you fell for it.

What is wrong with Rev Warren? He seems to have a very positive message about faith for everyone. I just don’t understand the extreme liberal mind… Obama is now going to be President for ALL Americans, not just the most liberal fringe of the Democratic party! Obama’s mandate is for fixing the corrupt and harsh political climate – things that would bring most of the country together, not advancing some sort of extreme agenda! Many people I know who voted for Obama are looking for that type of change, not some sort of Socialist utopia!

President Elect Barak Hussain Obama has a right to choose whomsoever he wants and for whatever reason. Give the man a break. The truth is, no matter who is chosen to give teh invocation, some will always be unhappy with the choice.
If kathryn Colbert was the President Elect, then she could have had anybody or nobody do the invocation. But SHE was not not the chosen one. I/We did not vote for Obama or McCain because of who will be giving the invocation. We just want the darn ECONOMY fixed! People are losing jobs and homes left and right. heck, Rush Limbaugh can give teh invocation for all I care, but can he fix the economy?

America so badly needs to raise its educational standards.
People need to chill, over NON-ISSUES!
So much time and energy are wasted on INSIGNIFICANT issues; such as, who shares religious mumbo jumbo with Obama.
America is fighting THREE HOT WARS!
Educational standards need to be improved URGENTLY.
Economy is in the tank!
Criminality is about to explode, unless the economy is fix post haste.
And we worry about the religious mumbo jumbo of some religious nut?
Are those, like Warren, suffering from childhood religious brainwashing, lost as adults? You betcha!
But so to are lost those who suffer from the birth/behavioral defect of homosexual tendencies.
And even more lost are those who become so perverted that they act on, condone and promote the unnatural and abnormal, and societally worthless homosexual tendencies.
Homosexuals should be thinking about CURE, instead of making worse their birth/behavioral; because deviant behaviors ARE NEVER EVER going to be accepted by a representative sample of humans or of human societies, for as long as humans shall live!
Truth is: Better dead than gay!

Warren’s a punk. A few years back TIME did a story on this showman. He said in the article that the answers to life must be outside of us because if they were inside of us we would have found them by now. I remember thinking that it sounded like a high school girl talking: we must be made for each other, after everything we’ve been through and we’re still together.

Warren is a man who is using the pulpit to advertise himself and raise money to help others, but, mostly himself. He makes women become secnd to the man again and preaches whatever he thinks will be acceptable for that day! It is amazing that this cult leader actually has people believing that he gives a ****! Sort of reminds you of BO, the “one” who said that only Hillary would do anything to win..that was funny, especially when he was really talking about himself. Some days it pays to be an atheist, at least, than you know who you can trust for the right reasons.

Kolbert and a lot of the extreme liberals are in for quite a disapointment if they think Obama is going to govern as a liberal president. As for gay marriage, he has made it quite clear that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman and the issue should be left to the states. (Personally I think the government should stay out of it and let the people do what they want). Rev Warren is a “rock star” choice as many millions have read his books. Personally I am a Christian moderate who voted for Obama and I do not want him to govern as a leftist extremist -we’ve had ENOUGH extremism for the past 8 years – we don’t need to tip it all the way back in the other direction. Govern to the center – govern correctly.

Monica – I voted for McCain and I don’t think it’s the anti-Obama people who are against this. Even most Repubs see this as a non-issue as to who does the invocation. I don’t agree with Obama’s views on most issues for I am a conservative, but even I would accept Obama’s choice…whoever it was. It’s his day. Unfortunately, some groups like this gay fringe group will see this far more than what it is. People need to chill.

“Pastor” [at least that is what he calls himself] Warren is no more than the “Oprah Winfrey” of marketed religion. It is actually pathetic that Barack is going out of his way to pander to the predjudiced religious right. Pathetic, cowardly, and disappointing. This is Barack pandering, not Barack thinking or believing.

To “David” and all the other homo haters – Understand that even with all the money pouring in from intolerant and ignorant [yes, I said IGNORANT] black churches and the Mormons in Nevada, Prop 8 passed in CA by an extremely small margin. In fact, public acceptance of same sex marriage has increased significantly in just the past 10 years. So, the passing of the hateful Prop 8 is just a speed bump on the long road to equality. Blacks [even 1/2 Black Barack, should understand and accept the that fact]. I see Barack as a self-serving coward who cares more about his political ambition than he does his country. “Pastor” Warren is a showman, not a Pastor.

Obama lover/Obama Hater: Religious/Not religious:
Is this really an issue that is worth being so hateful and stirred up about? I’m an atheist who has no problem with any person who wants to ask for all who are listening to think positive thoughts for all Americans, to ask that those in governing roles make wise and good decisions, etc. It is what you, as an American, decide to internalize as you listen to these words. It doesn’t matter if you believe the speaker believes his/her words or not. What does matter is how you choose to live your life once hearing those words. Find something constructive to do with all your intense emotions.

Rick Warren represents the forces of ignorance and superstition. I find it appalling that people still need to invoke the “blessing” of the invisible man in the sky. Religion is nothing more than a collection of fairy tales designed to control people’s thinking. Why do you think they came up with the idea of “sin”? It was nothing more than thought control. The main religions denigrate people by denying our humanity. They try to make people feel guilty about not meeting an impossible standard of behavior or thought. Religion belongs in the 1st century, not the 21st. There was a poll in the UK recently and the majority felt that religion was the main cause of conflict in the world today. Gee, you think? The whole “my god is better than your god” crapola has got to stop.

Obama is trending right, indeed hard right–exhibit “A” being Clinton for SOS, a social progressive but a pro war foreign policy HAWK–on virtually every major appointment, and is backing off on too many promises before he even sets foot in the Whitehouse. He risks alienating the core constituencies that got him in a position to be elected, and whom he now takes utterly for granted. Huge mistake. Elections are supposed to have consequences, real consequences, and sucking up the same “expert” influences–neocons, blue dogs, evangelicals, warmongers—is hardly the “change” we need. I started to become deeply worried when he reversed his position on domestic spying during the primareis; I started biting my nails when he started spouting hard line positions on Afghanistan and Pakistan during the general election; I started losing my faith when he started naming all ex-Clintonites to his cabinet; my suspension of disbelief went out the window when he agreed to keep Gates on and began dramatic backpedaling on his commitment to ending the war. Now, by inviting Rick Warren to give the invocation is a direct slap in the face of progressives of all sexual orientations, and yet another indication that Obama is more interested in succoring favor with this powerful group than in standing up for principles that he espouses. Haven’t the evangelicals wreaked enough havoc over the past two decades? Do we really need more of their pompous, holier than thou hubris? Why are celebrating them at the inauguration??? And why should lesbians and gays have to accept the notion that somebody opposed to their equal rights is given such prominence? At this rate Obama could become the first candidate ever to lose both his vision AND his mandate before he even takes office.

This is a GREAT choice for Obama. Rick Warren is a great man and I admire him for sticking to his faith when it comes to issues such as Abortion and Gay Marriage. I share the same values and I believe its a great thing to see someone who isnt afraid of what people will say and will preach the word of God anyway.
As far as the far left goes, they just need to shut up. Obama is a man of faith and he needs pastor warren more than ever. I hope and pray that pastor Warren will reach the heart of President Elect Obama and change his stance on Gay Marriage and Abortion.
Gay Marriage, Abortion, Drugs, and Greed are destroying this country, we need God more than ever.

I’m a liberal who has no problem whatsoever with an invocation — I may not be religious, but plenty of my fellow citizens are, and an invocation should be given for them. However, I don’t care for the choice of a celebrity “pastor,” who has turned himself into a mega-industry.
There are plenty of very eloquent, highly-educated, less-well-known ministers in the Protestant-Chistian denominations, if that’s what is wanted. I can think of some Lutherans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and Unitarians who would be quite appropriate and who are brilliant, deeply-inspiring speakers. So why Warren? Is this going to be the tacky infomercial presidency?

Oh WOW what a horrible decision on Barry Obama’s part. Really? I think Obama is a Republican DISGUISED as a democrat. I am SHOCKED he didn’t pick a black reverend to do the honors. Absolutely shocked. The gay community must be livid. Whereyat gay folks? Are you going to protest? March on DC? Have another day without a gay in protest? Let’s go, people. Fire up the band. Let’s rock and roll and call Obama out on this. Rick Warren is a megalomaniac who should not have been “tapped” to do this.. ever

I can’t believe I am actually going to defend Obama on this one…. it’s his day, his choice. I guess freedom of choice doesn’t extend to one’s choice of speakers on inauguration day in the eyes of extreme liberals – you only have freedom of choice, if you make the same choice they would.

cameotoo,
be careful on who you past judgement on. for he who judges shall be judged.
when I said “the far left needs to shut up,” thats exactly what I meant. In todays society it seems that anything and everything is offending people on the far left spectrum and its absolutely RIDICULOUS.
What about the rights of the people who live their lives following Christ? They can’t have a say in these matters because everytime they try to speak up someone from the FAR LEFT jumps up and calls them either a facist, racist, or say what they are doing is a HATE CRIME.
It seems inevitable that in a few years Pastor’s such as Rick Warren will be getting ARRESTED for speaking out against immoral things such as Gay Marriage and Abortion. It seems as if our FREEDOM OF SPEECH is being compromised so that everybody can be happy.
This Nation will NEVER be blessed by God unless we turn back to him. We need to cut all this immoral crap out of our society and get God back into our country. This country was founded by MEN OF FAITH and the majority of the people who live in this country believe in GOD.
If you’re on the far left and you don’t like hearing about God, well then pack up your stuff and hit the road. God will make a come back in this Nation and when he does it will be GLORIOUS.
Posted by: Ryan | December 17, 2008, 10:05 pm 10:05 pm
Reading these posts scares me. It isn’t going to matter what he says, does or chooses. We will be arguing. It’s just a minister to say a prayer. We really don’t need to make it into some huge political thing.
Posted by: Susan-1 | December 17, 2008, 10:12 pm 10:12 pm
Ryan, You’re telling anybody with a gripe to hit the road after suggesting that free speech will take a hit. Do you understand how this reads? Not to mention it’s not very loving. You might want to go back to that whole “part of the solution and not a part of the problem” thinking here. God would suggest patience. To maybe live your life as to witness in a good way. I doubt he’d tell you to send em packing? He’s probably tell you to speak kindly to them while discussing this topic. Maybe remind you not to tell them off if you want the message heard.

“It seems inevitable that in a few years Pastor’s such as Rick Warren will be getting ARRESTED for speaking out against immoral things such as Gay Marriage and Abortion. It seems as if our FREEDOM OF SPEECH is being compromised so that everybody can be happy.”
Uh….wait a minute, Who told whom to “shut up”? It appears that your mind is so closed it cannot even communicate with itself, let alone with others.
You are free to believe whatever you wish….and so am I. Only difference is that you’re trying to shut people up, while I’m pointing out that the closed minded, bigoted attitudes of so many people of faith—of which you are a perfect example—are nothing but self-serving and arrogant pablum we’re sick to death of having you shove it down our throats. We’ve had enough, got it?
And my goodness, who appointed you or your ilk the minister of morality? You would dare speak for GOD? Remove the mote from your own eye buddy.

Susan, it is not just a minister saying a prayer. It is a man who likened homosexuality to incest and pedophilia. It’s a man who heavily supported a ballot proposition in CA to deny fellow citizens their civil rights. It’s a man who has the arrogance to tell others what God thinks about their personal lives.
Posted by: Sam | December 17, 2008, 10:32 pm 10:32 pm
Susan,
if you think God is just this calm being, your wrong.
read your bible. When a Nation denied/rejected God, he broke that Nation.
Our Nation is riddled with Sin. There are people in this country who preach “save the trees, save the environment, we need cheap gas!”…. The same time that they are preaching this GARBAGE, millions upon millions of INNOCENT BABIES are being murdered just because the parents dont want to deal with them. Who knows, that baby that was aborted today might have been sent here by God to cure cancer, diabetes, or even AIDS… but hey we’ll never know because now the poor thing is in a trash can somewhere.
WHERE IS YOUR OUTRAGE PEOPLE? People in this country need to get their priorities straight before God drops the final hammer on this Nation.

Okay, Obama is brilliant. I’ll admit it.
The left has no choice but to vote for the Democrats, but the Evangelicals are ticked at the Republicans right now. Obama making a play to appeal to the Evangelicals is brilliant.
But I don’t think this is anything other than a perfectly crafted PR stunt, Obama has to come off as a unifier, so tap a moderate Evangelical type for the invocation. If BHO really did what he wanted, Rev Wright would be doing the invocation. But that wouldn’t sent the correct message.

I drank the Obama kool-aid, voted for him, and gave him money. Who’s “right” is more right? How many “rights” make a horrible wrong? And why is our Federal Government getting involved in some of these issues???

Hey PhillyPaul, Hate is the buzz word you have embraced to encompass all emotion toward your gayness, from your perspective. Most people have many emotions regarding gay “marriage”. Why do you care about “marriage” when you have civil unions? You get the same benefits, don’t you? Maybe you just hate straight people. Is it that you just want to cheapen the sanctity of marriage to make yourself feel better about your poor choices?

Some of the issues should be STATE issues only. When our federal government starts dictating the choices individual states can make our country is doomed.

Even though I’m a supporter of Obama, I strongly disagree with him picking an evangelical preacher who would love to impose his radical views and beliefs on others. If right-wing bible thumpers want to live by their rules, that would be okay. But they want to impose their beliefs and ignorance on the rest of us, therefore, denying us our own right, spiritual freedom and beliefs. PLUS, this preacher is too well known for his narrow minded views. I was disappointed when Obama agreed to debate McCain with such a narrow minded person posing the questions.

JESUS loves every one but he was bold to tell the truth as it is. Christians are called Christians because they follow Jesus Christ. So as a Christian pastor we should expect him to reflect the Bible not some popular openion. Supporting a marriage between man and women only is not being anti equal but it is adhering to the bible.

And because Rick Warren is known for his stance against women’s rights and gay rights… putting him in the spotlight is an insult to women and gays.
Religious extremists of any religious category are control freaks who breed intolerance and hate.
Extremists need to mind their own business & let religious freedom ring.
And remember, pro-choice is not necessarily pro-abortion. And it’s not an easy choice nor should it be a religious-political football. It’s a private issue between a woman, her medical caregiver, and her conscience or higher power. If only people would worry about doing the right things individually and if only each person would worry about their own soul instead of judging and trying to control others, then this world would be such a better place AND A MUCH MORE PEACEFUL, TOLERANT, & TRULY LOVING PLACE.

Hey shi-
I don’t want for you to be gay or get an abortion and anyone in your family to do so. I don’t want to force my opinions or beliefs on anyone because that would be interfering with your rights. Just like the KKK tries to interfere with the rights of blacks. Just like neo-cons and religious extremists want to interfere with the rights of others who don’t agree with them. Just like how our patriarchal society wants to control and interfere with the rights of women. You can’t compare an open-minded and progressive thinking person with the KKK…because we just want to be left alone–NOT EVEN TRYING TO CONTROL OTHERS. What business is it of anyone’s about who sleeps with who, who marries who, etc? Who cares? Worry about your own deeds!

Really? Jesus was intolerant, and Christ is intolerant.
Jesus didn’t preach and teach tolerance. He said that He is the ONLY Way to the Father, that only few will find the gate; and He said that He didn’t bring peace, rather He said that He brought a sword and a division.

Here we go again, the immoral minority demanding the moral majority serve their purposes only, or be condemned for not. Only gays are to have rights, or so they are acting like it. Obama’s choices are his to make, but they evidently feel he only has the right to make the choices they want made. How sad. The majority in this nation are not gay, and shouldnt their leader have the right to choose someone that reflects that? Funny how they “discriminate” against any that doesnt choose as they want them to. They wanted the right to be gay and they have that now, but that does not mean no one should have the right to choose differently. I cant condemn them for being as they are, no more than I can condemn a killer, or a rapist, or a thief; it is not my right as I choose to let judgement to another. They need stop condemning others that arent as they, or who choose differently than they do. Non gays have rights, too, don’t we?

“Libs” -as you idiots like to label anyone who is not a neo-con fundamentalist- do not try to force gay marriage on you or force abortions on you. It is the neo-con fundamentalist Christians trying to make gay people or women do what they say to do.
Fundamentalist Christians are as dangerous and hate-inspiring as fundamentalists in any other religion.

or that biracial couples should not be allowed to marry?
would it be okay for him to pick a preacher who says husbands should be allowed to beat their wives?
this was a mistake… I love his cabinet…but on a base moral issue about equality and people having the right to live their lives as long as they are not hurting anyone…
something his meer election speaks to…
this was mypocritical if nothing else.

==Tolerance leads to peace and love in the world.==SO TRUE.
Tolerance of what? ONE PERSON’S RIGHTS GO AS FAR AS ANOTHER. GAYS MARRYING DO NOT HURT YOU AND IT’S NOT YOUR BUSINESS. WOMEN CONTROLLING THEIR OWN BODIES & HEALTH & THEIR OWN LIVES DOES NOT HURT YOU AND IT’S NOT YOUR BUSINESS.
Yes, if you tolerate the child molester, there will be peace, but there will be child mosesting.–I NEVER SAID ONE SHOULD TOLERATE A MOLESTER, IDIOT. THAT’S CERTAINLY SOMEONE’S SICK VIEWPOINT AND ACTIONS HURTING ANOTHER AND IMPOSING ON SOMEONE ELSE’S RIGHTS. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN EXECUTION EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF CHILD MOLESTERS. THEY ARE MONSTERS. BUT REMEMBER-GAYS ARE NOT THE SAME AS PEDOPHILES. ONLY AN UNEDUCATED IDIOT WOULD TRY TO LUMP THE TWO TOGETHER.
If you tolerate a wife/husband beater, wife/husband beating will continue, and you will have a kind of peace. AND IF YOU LET MEN CONTROL WOMEN BY CONTROLLING WOMEN’S BODIES THEN YOU ARE TRAMPLING ON THE RIGHTS OF ALL WOMEN. ANY WOMAN WHO WOULD SUPPORT SUCH STUPIDITY SHOULD HAVE THEIR HEADS EXAMINED. DON’T YOU REALIZE THAT THE ULTIMATE PREJUDICE IS AGAINST WOMEN…STILL. NEO-CON PATRIARCHAL MEN USE IGNORANT WOMEN’S RADICAL FUNDAMENTALISTS BELIEFS TO HELP THEM KEEP OTHER WOMEN UNDER CONTROL. OPEN YOUR EYES. FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN RADICAL WOMEN ARE HARMING THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS AND FURTHERING THE GOALS OF PATRIARCHAL MEN–MEN WHO WILL CONTINUE TO BEAT THEIR WIFES AND GET AWAY WITH IT UNTIL WE THE WOMEN GET FULL EQUAL RIGHTS. MEN GET OFF ALL THE TIME FOR KILLING THEIR WIVES AND GIRLFRIENDS BUT WOMEN WHO HAVE KILLED ABUSIVE HUSBANDS IN THE PAST, EVEN IN SELF-DEFENSE, HAVE USUALLY GONE TO PRISON. READ YOUR HISTORY, YOU UNEDUCATED IDIOT. DID YOU KNOW THAT AS LITTLE AS FORTY YEARS AGO THAT IT WAS STILL LEGAL TO BEAT YOUR WIFE WITH A STICK IN SOME STATES AS LONG AS THE DIAMETER OF THE STICK DID NOT EXCEED THE WIDTH OF THE HUSBANDS THUMB? CHEW ON THAT IDIOT RIGHT-WING WOMEN WHO WOULD VOTE TO LET MEN CONTROL WOMEN PER YOUR FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN VIEW. AND NOTICE, I ALWAYS MAKE A DISTINCTION BETWEEN REAL CHRISTIANS AND FUNDAMENTALIST RIGHT-WING ONES WHO TRY TO CONTROL OTHERS. REAL CHRISTIANS–RIGHT ON! AND WEED OUT YOUR RADICALS AND QUIT LETTING THEM SOIL YOUR GOOD CHRISTIAN REPUTATIONS BY TRYING TO PIT EVERYONE AGAINST EACH OTHER SO THEY CAN FURTHER THEIR RADICAL AGENDAS AND CONTROL THE WORLD—LIKE RADICALS OF OTHER RELIGIONS ARE DOING.
If we tolerate Iran’s nuke ambitions, Iran will continue to build nukes and there will be a kind of peace. HERE YOU GO AGAIN TRYING TO PUT WORDS IN OUR MOUTHS. I SAID NOTHING ABOUT TOLERATING IRAN NUKING US–JUST MORE OF YOUR NEO-CON PROPAGANDA BECAUSE YOU CANNOT MAKE AN INTELLIGENT ARGUMENT OUT OF SUCH IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY AND INTOLERANCE.
If tolerance is so great, why don’t Libs practice more of it? DITTO ON WHAT I JUST SAID. BECAUSE YOU CANNOT MAKE AN INTELLIGENT ARGUMENT….
I’LL TOLERATE YOU HAVING YOUR OWN BELIEF SYSTEM AS LONG AS YOU DON’T TRY TO IMPOSE IT ON THE REST OF US.
AND LET US NOT FORGET–JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A RADICAL GOVERNMENT AND A RADICAL ELEMENT IN ANOTHER COUNTRY DOES NOT MEAN THAT EVERYONE IN THAT COUNTRY IS BAD. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE. AND ROTTEN APPLES STINK AND SMELL AND GET A LOT MORE ATTENTION THAN HEALTHY ONES. I’D SURE HATE FOR PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES TO JUDGE ME BY WHAT BUSH AND CHANEY HAVE DONE. I HATE IT THAT MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT ALL CHRISTIANS ARE FUNDAMENTALIST RADICALS. GOD, PLEASE HELP US ALL. AND, YES, I BELIEVE IN GOD. YOU IDIOT FUNDAMENTALISTS DON’T OWN GOD ANY MORE THAN YOU OWN PATRIOTISM. GO BACK INTO YOUR CAVES, YOU HATE & FEAR MONGERS, UNTIL YOU CAN LEARN TO STOP STIRRING UP TROUBLE. OR MAYBE JUST READ AND STUDY HISTORY AND BROADEN YOUR MINDS AND OPEN YOUR HEARTS. WE’RE ALL GOD’S CHILDREN AND GOD IS ALL ABOUT LOVE–IN ANY RELIGION. QUIT INSULTING THE DIVINE WITH YOUR HATE & FEAR. GOD IS LOVE.

So what if Gays are upset? No matter who he chose, someone would be upset. In everything he does someone will be upset. You can’t please all the people all the time, nor should you try. I’m extremely liberal but I admire Rick Warren. It’s Obama’s day and his choice. May the sun shine brightly on that day and his presidency.

I agree with Sam. What gave the LGT community the idea that they would have veto power or any say in what Obama does. As I understand, Obama said he would not kowtow to any interest group which really means that he makes his own decisions and some group will disagree with every single one of his ideas or decisions. Seems to me that the vast majority of Americans (not including the nutcases on this blog who try to see something sinister in everything), will think this is a good choice.

The majority of this article serves only to post the “full statement from the People for the American Way” Do you write articles to post PR releases?

AND SO FAR… I DO STILL SUPPORT OBAMA. HE GOT MY VOTE. BUT I STILL THINK HE MADE A BAD CHOICE BY PICKING SUCH A DIVISIVE PREACHER. HOPEFULLY, OBAMA WILL DO WHAT HE PROMISED DURING HIS CAMPAIGN. THAT IS WHAT IT’LL TAKE TO GET MY VOTE NEXT TIME.
AND AS FOR THE GUY WHO SAID HE BELIEVES THAT JESUS IS THE ONLY PATH TO SALVATION–YOU BELIEVING THAT IS FINE WITH ME. THAT IS YOUR PATH AND THE PATH FOR MANY BUT NOT THE PATH FOR ALL. A VERY WISE MAN, C. POWELL, SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING MOSLEM. JUST REMEMBER TO RESPECT THE SALVATION PATHS OF JEWS, THE HINDUA, MOSLEMS, BUDDHISTS, THE BAHAI & NUMEROUS OTHER SPIRITUAL BELIEF SYSTEMS AND ALSO THE RIGHTS OF THE NON-BELIEVERS. THAT’S WHAT AMERICA IS ABOUT–FREEDOM OF BELIEF–FREEDOM FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL TO HER LIBERTY AS LONG AS SHE DOES NOT TRY TO TAKE AWAY ANOTHER PERSON’S LIBERTIES.

HOW WOULD YOU FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIANS FEEL IF OBAMA HAS CHOSEN A GAY WOMAN WHO WAS A BUDDHIST OR A JEW, AND WHO IS OUTSPOKEN FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS TO DELIVER THE PRAYER?
DID YOU NOT READ THIS EARLIER? “DID YOU KNOW THAT AS LITTLE AS FORTY YEARS AGO THAT IT WAS STILL LEGAL TO BEAT YOUR WIFE WITH A STICK IN SOME STATES AS LONG AS THE DIAMETER OF THE STICK DID NOT EXCEED THE WIDTH OF THE HUSBANDS THUMB?” HOW CAN WOMEN NOT BE INSULTED?

A very smart decision!! President-elect Barack Obama is the (will be) the president of all of us.

I am a Christian and while I do not believe it is for me to be the one to judge (I will let God do his own job), I do know that this is the one country that was founded on religious beliefs – ONE NATION UNDER GOD. Our laws were based on the beliefs of God written out in the Bible. This has been our country’s long-standing guide when it comes to what is right and wrong. It is where the moral ground for the USA was laid. Those who choose not to abide by the moral laws laid out here in the USA have every right to do so but they cannot expect the laws to change for them. Do as you will, without judgement from another, but don’t ask the rest of us to hand out the same rights and privileges. This is the way it is in every country, the laws are the laws and the rules are the rules – whatever they may be. Noone gets them changed simply because they don’t like them.

I believe a largenumber of you are missing the entire point. Rick arren was selected because, and you can look this information up, he is a proud member of the CFR. Who orchestrated the Obama phenomenom but the head of the CFR and both Obama and Warrne are members as well as Hillary and many, many others in present office, past office and to be sworn in office of President. You peoplke keep gettingmired in I am a conservative, I am a liberal business and you see nothing. These are meaningless labels designed to push your buttons and to distract you from the reality that they keep recycling thes same old interests and people towards the ultimate goal which is of destroying the United States of America and right or left these are just opposite wings of the same old carrion eating bird. No matter you elected Obama or if it had been Mc Cain, they are both globalists and this is a globalist agenda .

Just one more comment, as I have read the comments of others. To the woman who said abortion and gay-marriage doesn’t hurt others, I beg to differ. The largest number of women having abortions are those who simply didn’t want the child, not rape victims and the like. Abortion hurts women by allowing them to be irresponsible for their own behavior furthering the moral decline that has befallen our country. Make it illegal. Let our daughters see that there are consequences to their actions, to be respectful of their own bodies – a baby is the least of the worries that can fall on a girl or woman throwing her morals and her body to whoever wants it. There are too many STD’s out there for women to think it’s okay, no repercussions, for being promiscious. Let them see that there HUGE consequences and let them learn this lesson of responsibility. Bring back the self-worth to women and teach them to think before they act. Also, it hurts women in more than a physical way. It tears them apart emotionally. Noone in clear conscience can take another life without guilt. Also, the Bible states marriage is between a man and a woman. The gay issue does hurt other people. It hurts the traditional families who believe in the Bible and the moral foundation this country was founded on. It hurts the mom and dad who have to explain to their children why some people make the choice to do what the Bible says is wrong and it hurts the children who become confused by those who choose to go against the foundation of where they live. One Nation Under God – that’s the USA. Don’t like it? Go somewhere else.

There was a time when I thought that and adequate knowledge of Science and Math was what our society needed,Now I know that I was wrong. We need a re-education in Humanity: it’s nature defining characteristics, and it’s role on the planet.
Neo-con,Liberal,White,Black,left- wing, right-wing, Christian, Atheist, Gay, Bi, all useful labels, only if Human beings where stored in a commercial warehouse, with affixed batch numbers and price tags. In the real world we are all the same biological species, with the same needs(see Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs): and we all have the same metaphysical confines. If we were truely wiser we would all seek methods and systems that would create a strong, and harmonious nation with more equitable and stable financial, commercial, and social entities.

The reason Obama picked quotes from Rev Warren’s”Purpose Driven Life” is only because he is following Oprah Winfreys’s beliefs, and she was a main Money supporter of Obama from the beginning, as everyone knows. If Obama is a true Christian, which he say he is, why doesn’t he quote from “The Bible”?? He will find the real “Way, The Truth, and The Life” there and will stop all that bickering of “Is he or isn’t he a Muslim. :) What an example of “What Money can buy” even beliefs. I believe Oprah has received her pay back. N’est ce pas?

Jen–”ONE NATION UNDER GOD.” —Hello, this was added to the pledge in the 1950′s. I do believe our country was founded before that. Once again, read more history. And are you saying that people of other religions do not believe in God? Wow!
And that’s what’s wrong with religion. That’s where the fundamentalists come from. They try to stir in their social agenda with spirituality. A poisonous brew that produces dangerous fundamentalists in many religions including Christianity.
And michele Brown, you have a good point. I plan on devoting a lot of study on the globalist movement which I believe is closely related to the conspiracy theory. But having been badly abused by the patriarchal system, I will not forget to fight for my full rights as a woman. I believe you are right, though, That is what sexism, racism, & religious discrimination are all about. Sexism, racism, and religion are both used to control and distract people while a few powerful ones take over the world. They want us all angry and fighting among ourselves. And fanaticism is fodder for chaos which lets the greedy take over the world.

And Jen, I intend to stay. This is my country. Hey, did you know that the Bible has been edited many times to promotes others’ social agenda? STUDY YOUR HISTORY. People who want you to take the Bible word for word are afraid of you learning the truth about how many times the Bible has been revised. That is why such folks want to keep you in ignorance which breeds fear and hate. God is about love. And I think that God is probably pretty ticked off with folks for using HIM/HER to promote their own agendas.

I am so sick of all of you!!! PC has gone completly nuts!!! What ever happened to each his own? Oh but now we have to look at our neighbors & think, that santa offends me!!! Give me a f***ing break…we are all different, with different likes & dislikes, religion or not, pro life or pro choice! If a gay couple wants a child, i would rather have a gay couple raise a child than a child to have druggie parents, or abusive parents!! And as far as pro life – the number of children being abandoned far out weighs the number of people adopting or WILLING to adopt!
As far as this economy thing…it’s b.s.!! How could we have been 1 of the strongest/weathiest countries in the the world…then one day, 1 bank says oh shoot, we handed out too much money to people we knew couldnt pay & handed out adjustable mortgage rates like candy….and then the whole country falls apart?!!!! gas prices were through the roof just months before that happened!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! somebody somewhere knows what the heck is going on but as Americans, we are sheep…we follow, we do not protest!!! and all of people on pharm drugs…you can find a natural alternative…dont you see what all these drugs are doing to us…more cancer, fibromyalgia, more everything!!!
WAKE UP…AND WHO GIVES A FLYING PIE
WHO OBAMA WANTS TO INAGURATE HIM!!!! i’m sure if we took all the money you people gave to a presidential election & ACTUALLY helped a person in your neighborhood…this world would be a better place!
Posted by: CANDICE P | December 18, 2008, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm
For the most part, I do not disagree with you Candice, people are sheep. And I don’t give a damn about what’s PC as long as radicals don’t infringe upon my rights.
And right-on for your comments on children/adoption,etc. Reversed adoptions are an atrocity and a special interest of mine. A good, loving gay parent is a thousand time better than some lousy drug-addicted parent who thinks they own the biological rights of their offspring! I’ve known adults and children from both groups.

It’s a prayer for the New president and are country, and right now we need all the prays we can get. this country is fulling a part, and all you people are worrried about is a man saying a prayer.Be sides we do not follow man we follow GOD.

Do you see us fist fighting to secure our beliefs of following God’s Word, “One man and one woman joined in Holy matrimony?” We make more love not war! Let Obama stand by his beliefs too with his lovely bride. I think he appreciates Rick’s truthful preaching of God’s Word. Say on Brother Rick as the Bible does, “God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled.” Hope we can all practice this.
Posted by: Gracie | December 18, 2008, 5:44 pm 5:44 pm
So you just need to stick to the qualities you listed and quit trying to force your ways on others who believe differently and quit inciting hate and fear by labeling gay people and intelligent, independent, liberated women as evil. Try practicing the values you claim– (love, happiness peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness & self-control), don’t condemn, judge and push others around, and the earth will be a far better place. (:

Obama’s cabinet selection is no surprise…one has only to look at his time in office as President of the Harvard Law Review. I wonder whether he was able to make a difference then? Let’s hope he’s not just another US President. The World is watching!
