Oh, That Joe! (No. 45 in a Series): The Loquacious Blue Hen is Gracious to the Spunky Maverick
Two months ago, all eyes were on vice presidential candidates Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., and Gov. Sarah Palin, R-Alaska, as the two squared off in their St. Louis, Missouri, debate. The blabbocracy wondered: would Biden be demeaning? Say something oafish? Make a gaffe?
As it happened, Biden and Palin’s debate may have been best known for her wink and his relatively uncontroversial performance.
In Philadelphia for a National Governors Association meeting Tuesday to address the nation’s floundering financial world, now Vice President-elect Biden and Gov. Palin came together once again.
"I want to thank all of you for being here," Biden told the assembled governors. "And Governor Palin, I want to thank you particularly."
"I might point out, as I told you — we walked in — since the race is over, no one pays attention to me at all," Biden said. "So I’m — maybe you will walk outside with me or something later and say hello to me," quipped the loquacious Blue Hen as the crowd laughed.
"It’s great to see you, Governor," Biden continued. "Thank you."
"And, by the way, I think it is — I hope, you know, the whole country can see the sort of a metaphor for the fact that this election is over and here we are," he went on. "We’re all together. We’re all dealing with a common problem… This is not, as was stated so many times by all of you and us, this is not a Democrat or Republican problem. We’ve got ourselves a problem."

Ehh Jake, who cares about Biden, bring us some real excitment, get the masses going and tell them the story of Harry Reid and smelly tourists….

“Hopefully, she ignored him as this is what he deserves. ”
Not sure what you mean. Since Biden proved to be an asset to his ticket (polling indicates that he put to rest fears of Obama’s lack of international expierence among undecided voters), and Palin proved to be a clear liability (undecideds were NOT impressed with her obvious inability to handle a basic unscripted interview, even from Katie “Cutthroat” Couric), Biden’s comments to her were indeed gracious. This was an unusual election – it is rare that even a Dan Quayle level VP actually hurts their ticket to such a real extent.

I voted for Obama. It was a vote against Hillary Clinton. I believed him when he said over and over that it would not be the same old Washington – well it is only more so. At least the last administration had morals and character and we did not have to read about some exploit every day in the news. Hillary Clinton is now the president, she will run his presidency, she has her own agenda and we will have to listen to her bellowing over and over again. What was he thinking, that people would not remember what he said. I feel that he has already let us down – there is no change – he surely is not as smart as I thought he was. I wish, along with many others, that I could take my vote back.

Jane: “At least the last administration had morals and character and we did not have to read about some exploit every day in the news. ”
You voted Obama? Riiiggghhhttt…
I would much rather hear about the Clinton’s gossip level exploits every day than the Bush Administration’s illegal wire tapping, torture endorsing, “Bring ‘em on” antics.
And if Senator Clinton tries to “run his presidency” she will be fired on the spot, no Senate seat to return to, no chance for 2016, go home to Bill. Most folks who really did vote for Obama watched the almost 2 year primary fight and are quite confident that Clinton can’t push Obama around one inch. She’ll serve her country by serving his administration or she’ll be retired to write memoirs.

It’s a shame Biden’s brief mention to Palin gets highlighted when both he and Obama had a number of substantial matters to announce. Is it just me, or are there others who are tired of the media serving up Palin as main course on the media menu? Excuse me, I’m getting hungry.

jhw539: Yes, I certainly did vote for Obama and no he is not very intelligent or he would have not put her in as Secy. of State. He will fire her, get real – That would cause such a furor that he would be badly damaged. In a book, it says “she does not believe in getting mad, just get even.”

I thought Joe Biden was so gracious to Palin [which she did not necessarily deserve since she was so rotten to him during their debate]. However, I am so glad it was he who invited her to take a walk with him instead of Obama because she THOUGHT Obama would want to speak privately to her – at least that was the buzz in AK. Yeah, like he really wants to offer Palin a job! Now that would really make all of us who supported him LIVID.
Jane / Dec 2, 2008 11:53:55 AM:
Please don’t feel the way you apparently do about Obama because I have not changed my opinion of the Clintons one iota; I never voted for WJC and I can’t stand her. They are way too greedy, power hungry, LIARS, opportunists, and everything is ALWAYS about THEM with their drama trauma! But because I too voted for Obama, I will trust his judgment and with that trust, I’m old and smart enough to know she did NOT win the primary [even when she tried that krap of Obama possibly becoming her VP - and krap was exactly what that was about], Obama won the primary, and she will NOT push him around at all – she couldn’t do it then and he won’t allow it now! This is quite evident in all he has demonstrated thus far.
No, he did NOT have to chose her for SoS as there are so many other people who absolutely would have done a great job [Dr. Susan Rice], but I know Obama has his reasons for his choice of her and I tend to believe exactly as ‘jhw539′ wrote; if she does ANYTHING that is out of line or displeases Obama, he will NOT stand for it even for a moment, he will fire her and she will virtually have NOTHING to fall back on if that occurs. There will be NO NYC Senate seat awaiting her and she will have RUINED any chance she may have thought she had to run for POTUS in the future. Other than writing her memoirs, she would be resigned to ‘baking cookies’ [that is an absolute insult to her]! So try not to feel upset or depressed as there are many of us who supported him from the get go who don’t understand why he did this, but we voted for him because he is ‘super intelligent’ and we now must have faith in him due to that intelligence. I don’t think any of us will be disappointed in the end. Have faith because I believe he will be a spectacular POTUS, but he has not yet taken office and I have a feeling there are many more good things around the corner and he won’t disappoint. Try to stay positive and if he does something horrible, we can always vote him out in 4 years. There is one thing that is positively certain and that is NO ONE COULD BE WORSE THAN BUSH [excuse me, EXCEPT PALIN]! Hang in there!

Instant Gratification – I agree with you on one point. It was slick for Biden to invite Palin to have a chat with him after it was publicized far and wide that she would be speaking personally with Obama. She needs to ease up on trying to break down doors.

“The thing that’s important for me is to get home and look in that mirror and say, I did not compromise my principles.”
Excuse me? What principles? W never displayed ‘principles’ during these past 8 years, so how could they have been compromised? When he does look in his mirror, l want it to reflect, in blood, all the names and faces of the dead Iraqi, Afghanis and American military and civilian men and womem who died for his BIG LIE. I want that mirror to serve as his conscience so that he will NEVER be able to look in any mirror again without remembering or being aware of the destruction to families he created here and abroad. That the Iraq war was predicated on his lies, not only so he could show daddy that he was a war POTUS, but so he and his cronies could reap the profits due to their lucrative contracts from oil. Bush, Cheney and all their cronies will never have to think about having enough money to actually enjoy life for the remainder of their lives.
Lots of things about this war have made me angry, but what really sticks out was several years after starting the war, he actually made jokes about looking for the WMD in his office and at some dinner function. This occurred while our military were in combat and his actions were not at all amusing since our young people were/are still in danger and he was ‘yucking’ it up. I’m certain the military found/fine ‘nothing funny’ about their daily lives while he was having a great time.
Hopefully history will portray the truth about this POTUS which will not be glowing or even good, but it must be the truthful. Whether Bush reads the short term history or not is up to him, but maybe he will be hanging around some people who will tell him the truth as seen through our eyes.
To hear him say that he did NOT know about our economic situation being dire[crisis] until Paulson told him AIG had to be bailed out and he would submit his one page rescue plan to Bush is just unbelievable. He had to have known long before that because during a press conference last year a reporter asked him about ‘recession’ and he replied he had not heard that word being used. It’s impossible for him to not have known that something was wrong economically, or at least, one would have thought he would have inquired of Paulson or Bernanke since he was asked the question by the press.
So maybe we can’t, as some suggest here, blame all our ills on Bush, but the past 8 years have been the worse I have lived through and I’m Bush’s age, but I unfortunately have none of his wealth. So when one is fortunate enough to have that silver spoon up his a@@ all his life, apparently being told there is a recession probably doesn’t resonte or take on the importance it does to those of us who never had a silver spoon in the first place. For the taxpayer to be FORCED to BAIL OUT OR RESCUE WALL STREET has left W’s legacy in far worse condition than perhaps the war in Iraq alone would have done; or maybe both occurrences have left his legacy in severe doubt because of the way he handled both.
I can’t even give him credit for his handling of 9/11 because at that time, we all rallied around him and he squandered that political capital when he simply said, “go shop”. That was unbelievable! Any other time in history, we were asked to make at least small sacrafices of some nature, so his statement was too radical and fleeting. Moreover, when he decided that we could not see photos of our military dead from Iraq, one had to ask what he was so afraid of by forbiding public mourning or remembrance.
I’m sorry, there are just too many issues about Bush that I cannot forgive or overlook and I doubt that I am alone in my feelings. I just hope history does not take on a white-wash to assuage his feelings because his history cannot assuage mine – now or any time in the future.

“Biden and Palin’s debate may have been best known for her wink and his relatively uncontroversial performance.”
Well that’s the way major media made it known, because they were winking at the Blue Hen’s flubs – such as a mangling of history – what was he talking about driving Hezbollah out of Lebanon – it was not just a lapse of words – it was a lapse of his whole supposed command of knowledge of foreign affairs as longtime committee chairman.
But no, since Sarah did not catch the flub on the fly, you weren’t going to do any favors on this one, were you?

Kitty: I just wish she would have ignored the Canadian comics who pretended to be Sarakozy. Remember that one? When she giggled when they made the incredibly vulgar comment about Belgium?
And I have to say, I am loving watching the price of crude/barrel slide and slide and slide and wonder how much the Alaskans love Sarah when those welfare checks stop comin’.

Robert, Sarah doesn’t even know where Lebanon is, let alone who the endless warring factions are.

I missed this series!
I love Joe’s loquaciousness. The press really needs to cover him more. I find him very warm, and I’ve been missing him on our screens.
I love the chemistry between Obama and Biden. I hope myJoe gets to talk more though. No more of this standing silently in the background. I love listening to him!

Joe Biden is a favorite of mine. I had originally wanted him for President, but Obama came on so strong and beat out all other contenders. So, I’m happy with Joe as V.P. Obama has my full support, he is smart to choose Hillary, she will be a dynamic SOS and will do a great job for America. Obama knows what he is doing, and Hillary will follow his orders. In any event, the Clintons are well respected around the world and other countries will listen to her. As for Biden playing nice with Palin, what would you expect him to do? Call her a loser and rub her face in it? (How I wish). In any event, she is only in the media constantly because the media is waiting for her “train wreck” events, like the turkey-slaugher tape, and she is so stupid, that she is bound to say more ridiculous comments as time goes on, and look even more stupid, further damaging her chance to become anyone of any importance in the Republican Party. They will have to start paying her to stay away and shut up. What a disgrace she is. And she loves the publicity. If only she knew it was deliberate to catch her in more “gotcha” questions. But she is too dumb to know that. Keep talking Sarah. The Dems will win in 2012, 2016, 2020, etc. etc.
