Rendell: Napolitano Perfect for Homeland Security Because She Has ‘No Life’
After a news conference in Philadelphia yesterday following the governors’ meeting with President-elect Barack Obama, National Governors Association chairman Ed Rendell (D-Penn.) didn’t realize he was standing next to a hot mic.
And listen to what he said about fellow governor and Obama’s pick for Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano (D-Ariz.):
"Janet’s perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it."
Today, per philly.com, Rendell apologized for his remarks at a news conference on budget reductions.
"What I meant is that Janet is a person who works 24/7, just like I do. She has no life. Neither do I," he said.

What a shame that just because some chooses not to have a kid or get married they are seen as not having a life.

Lighten up. I say stuff like about myself all the time.

Jeebus that’s you maybe janet feels she does have a life even though she’s not married with kids.
Posted by: rachel | December 3, 2008, 8:37 pm 8:37 pm
Rachel, Well it may seem like a harsh thing to say. The truth is, an adult with no children has an abundance of more “free” time than parents do. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Not having kids is often just a life decision. One that leaves that person with more money and more time. Period.

It’s common sense really.

The public has no idea how dedicated most upper-level public servants are. It’s not at all uncommon to spend 12-16 hours a day on the job. Private sector execs spend more time golfing than at work — guys that jumped ship told me all about it. Your private contractors are sopping up the gravy. Don’t ever believe that BS about the private sector working harder or doing a better job.

ED Randell is from a different generation of Americans that have no sensitivity to issues of people of the Obama generation but it could be sour grapes too. His predecessor from PA was secretary of Homeland security and maybe he thought he would be considered. Well Ed you just can’t win speaking your mind.

Do I sense some jealousy Gov. Rendell?

Too funny. I love this guy, and I agree with him. She has no life — just look.

What’s the big deal? She’s in charge of keeping us safe and I’m glad she will not have any problems at home to occupy her mind while protecting us from harm. Why do you think Tom Ridge gave the job up? It was interfering with his marriage and family. So I wish her all the luck and I hope she’ll do a terrific job(honestly I don’t care if your red or blue just keep us safe). It takes a lot of guts to take this job!

Marc I understand that not having a husband and kids lends itself to more free time but I dont equate that with having no life. All he had to say was she has the time to dedicate to the job the no life comment seemed like a jab at her.

Wow! What else does Rendell think when the mic is off? That was just wrong! Isn’t Napolitano a Democrat? What does Rendell say about the Republicans when the mic is off? It takes a big mouth to fit such a big foot inside…

Having no family is very different from having “no life.” Many people who are single have very full lives, they work, travel, have hobbies and social lives etc.
Besides, even if a person is single, they can still have all kinds of family ties.
What Rendell said seems harsh and unkind. Not to mention condescending….

Here’s what I don’t get, why do people think that because they said something in a hot mic, that it doesn’t count. Oops you weren’t supposed to hear me say that, so I didn’t.

I don’t know what is worse the comment or the fact that we would really never have known how he felt about the position and the candidate to fill it. Maybe this Governor should apply for a deputy white house spokesman job. At least then we may have a chance of knowing some truth!

Typical Ed. Having lived in both cities, I am well-qualified to say that only the Philadelphians rival the Chicagoans for the ability to open mouth and insert foot. (Though New Yorkers and Bostonians come close.)

This is typical of Fast Eddie. Please feel sorry for those of us who live in PA. I never thought he’d win a second term. We’re still waiting for all of that gambling revenue to make it to our school districts…but wait….it has gone to a couple of airports and is going to build a new soccer stadium – that sounds like education to me

Why didn’t Jake include the fact that, apparently during the same event, Rendell semi-trashed Sarah Palin. Something about “She’s no genius, but…” Some of the media called it a Rendell compliment. Sounds to me like he’s a dinosaur misogynist, but the Democrats will run interference for him. Had a Republican said that stuff, the media, Democrats and feminists would have had a field day. Where is NOW, now?

I think Rendell should apologize to Janet Napolitano’s female life partner. Why is no one talking about her life partner. We need openly gay role models in the cabinet.

His statement is only a big deal if Gov Napolitano thinks its a big deal. We have no business getting offended on her behalf if she doesn’t think it is something to be offended about. Otherwise, we may just be insulting her by claiming that she ought to be hurt by his observation.

These comments illustrate, in case there was still any doubt, that Gov. Rendell is a politician from the old school. No wonder that he was a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton during the ’08 Democratic Primary.

I’ll never figure out the voters in AZ either. How do you vote a gay woman to be your governor yet continue to support another @$$ in John McCain? I guess lack of water does funny things to people……

You all need to relax. While it is somewhat insensitive, if Governor Rendall is a friend of hers, it’s likely more of a compliment (he does suggest that she will be very dedicated to the role). If they are not friends, it’s insensitive and a bit unprofessional, to say the least.
Posted by: DCT | December 3, 2008, 10:48 pm 10:48 pm
…Not only do the comments show that he is from the old school, but also his response. It’s as if his honor is at stake if he so much as hints at a public apology or an admission that he made a mistake. Again, this is very similar to the Hillary Clinton approach, and is no wonder that he was a strong supporter of hers in the Democratic Primary.

I grew up in the suburbs of South Philly, born & raised. LIves in the “Art Museum Area” for 2 years. LOVE Philly Soft Pretzels & TastyKakes. For all the posters who never lived in Philly or knew Eddie when he was Mayor, listen up: Ed Rendell was the best thing to happen to Philly in decades. He took a budget deficit and turned it into a surplus. He fixed up and opened ALL the public pools so that kids had a way to cool off and stay out of trouble in the hot Philly Summers. He is a guy who is not afraid to show his back hair and dive into a public pool if it means good PR. He worked harder than any Mayor Philly ever had, including Frank Rizzo. When he speaks, honesty fall out of his mouth. He meant no disrespect toward Napolitano or her life partner. She is tough and a great cabinet pick. Yeah Phillies!!!

I listened to what he said, and HOW he said it; it was no dis, he wasn’t trying to be insulting or funny. Just speaking off the cuff, speaking freely. I’d bet the Governor (J.N) was non-plussed by the remarks.

Stella,
What vile sexist attacks? If anything, Palin had them coming. That woman is a shame to me, a woman. Her lack of intellect deserved exposure and for something all voters needed to know. This woman wants to cry sexism when she winks during the VP debate multiple times to appeal to the opposite gender? You know, really, it’s fine to market her feminine appeal, but she better shut up about sexism then, if she wants to do that.
If anything, the press gave Palin a pass. Put her under REAL grilling instead of those kinder interviews and she will melt. One way to fight sexism is to stop blaming failure on it but acknowledge it but without making every little thing an issue about it.
P.S, Can Palin go back to Alaska and start doing her job again? Her constituents are starting to get annoyed she has yet to step back in her office.
Palin deserved to lose, and I bet a woman like Napolitano would hardly be perturbed. She is smarter and tougher then Palin, for one. A comment like having no life won’t even ruffle her.

Rendell and Napolitano are perfect for each other. They are both a couple of liberal losers. Man I love watching the “party of change” get caught with their pants down. Look out California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. Wait until Napolitano and Obama get ahold of the illegal immigration issue together. You think this economy is in the sshithouse now, wait until these two phase out border security and give amnesty to 30 million plus illegal criminals. So much for WORTHWHILE change!
Posted by: Greg | December 4, 2008, 3:43 am 3:43 am
Sounds like he was telling the truth. I sure agree. I used to have no life, and I worked a lot harder, got more done. It’s just a fact. People who are dedicated to a task like many politicians are, often have no other life. It’s a good thing when they’re working for you. And for them – it’s their choice.
Posted by: SusanHelit | December 4, 2008, 4:16 am 4:16 am
Hmm… so maybe people with kids at home shouldn’t hold public office? Apparently, if you have kids, you can’t devote yourself to your job properly.
Maybe people should have thought of that before electing a president with small kids.
Same stuff has been said about Condi Rice, but liberal media didn’t care then. Napolitano is special because of all the rumors that she’s lesbian.

PhillyPaul – I agree that he was good for Phila., but he has been a DISASTER for PA. He doesn’t understand that there is a whole state between Phila. & Pittsburgh – and that our needs are FAR different from that of those citites. He’s another one who promised all sorts of things & has followed through on NONE. Like I said, I’m still waiting for the gambling revenue to make it to the school districts – which he forced to accept the money- after 498 of 501 school districts turned it down because of the strings attached. He turns around and coerces the state legislature to make it a law the districts MUST accept it, along with the strings. Now the districts are forced to abide by the rules, but where is the money???? I was half-hoping Hillary would win the election & get his sorry self out of PA.

This is NOT even remotely a news story!
Coming from Ed Rendell, who — like Janet — is a workaholic and great public servant, the comment was almost a compliment. The subtext: Janet will be terrific in this role because her job is very important to her!
People with high-pressure public jobs are a unique fraternity. Ordinary citizens who punch a clock at 5 p.m. each day just don’t get it.
Posted by: Greg | December 4, 2008, 7:51 am 7:51 am
IMO, I see nothing wrong with Rendell’s commemt. When I was single, I devoted every day, 24/7, to my job and didn’t want to do much of anything else because I loved my work. It d*mn sure beat dating deadbeats.
As for Palin, I saw no sexist treatment of her. In fact, she was the sexist with all her ‘come-hither winks’ and ‘you betcha smiles’ which were meant to evoke the ‘stupid’ male response and succeeded more than not. [One reporter affilated with the NYTimes even went to far as to state those gestures of her 'made him sit up a little straighter on the couch because he just knew she was looking and talking directly to him']. OMG, someone get me outta here; that’s how ignorant I believe her to be! What a crock! She knows exactly what she is doing because she has done it most of her adult life and gotten where she is currently due to it. She believed it would work on a national level since it worked so well for her at the local level, but someone forgot to tell her national and local are two completely different animals [or moose]! She’s one of those women who flirt with men until she grabs their interest and then gets p*ssed at them when they try to make a move – come on ladies, you know the type; certainly not a Napolitano or Laura Bush. Furthermore, Palin is out for Palin and skrew anyone who tries to get in her way. Since she does not possess the intellect God gave a moose, she has to use the only ‘talent’ she has learned and that is nothing more than a con job, but until men figure it out, she will continue to employ it to her advantage. She is trying to cover up the fact that she does not possess the intellect of a high school child and that weapon she deploys [which has thus far worked for her] seems to get the job done in having people ignore the fact that she is ignorant. We can only hope the electorate will smartem up in 2012 and not fall for the con!

This is the most stupid excuse for news I have ever heard. I’m not a big fan of Rendell but what he said was not offensive, it was just the truth. I don’t see the problem. I guess some people are just hyper sensitive. If I were a “talking head” I don’t think I could cover this story.

*What vile sexist attacks? If anything, Palin had them coming. That woman is a shame to me, a woman. Her lack of intellect deserved exposure and for something all voters needed to know.*
I like observing the hypocrisy of the `liberals’ on this forum, decrying some remark someone made about not `having a life’, with the two-month onslaught launched by the MSM – and yes, it was a sexist assault – against Sarah Palin.
Certainly, any politician deserves scrutinty, but unfortunately, Palin was the only one was scrutinized.
*This woman wants to cry sexism when she winks during the VP debate multiple times to appeal to the opposite gender? You know, really, it’s fine to market her feminine appeal, but she better shut up about sexism then, if she wants to do that.*
yes, and this is the same logic which one excuse rape on the grounds that the victim was wearing provocative clothing.
Is there any principle, any ethic, anything all, that `liberals’ won’t give up in their lust for power?
Oh, I forgot, power IS the `liberals’ entire ethic and principle…

What “vile sexist attacks” on Palin? The woman demonstrated herself to be an ethically-challenged, mean-spirited half wit whose only talent was getting the Republican base all worked up with a lot of mindless rhetoric.
Those “qualities” had nothing to do with her gender. A man with the same “qualities” would be just as obnoxious…although he probably wouldn’t wink as much.
