Secret Service Shows Unusual Restraint in ‘Bizarre’ Shoe Incident

ABC News’ Ann Compton Reports: U.S. Secret Service officials in Washington say they are satisfied their agents responded with "the appropriate level of reaction" when an Iraqi journalist hurled two shoes directly at President Bush during a Baghdad news conference.

"Everyone in that room passed through several layers of security," Agent Ed Donovan tells ABC News. Screening included magnetometers, sweeps by K9 dogs and U.S. military bomb squads. Donovan says name identification checks were done on all the journalists to confirm they were representing news organizations.

Video of the incident shows the Iraqi man stand up and hurl one shoe and then the second shoe two seconds later. President Bush ducked both. The head of the presidential protective detail was seen reaching the President’s side within six seconds, by which time the Iraqi had already been pulled to the ground from behind by a man in leather jacket, likely another Iraqi.

"There doesn’t appear to be any over-reaction" on the part of American agents, Donovan says, confirming the Secret Service agents who poured into the room did not draw their weapons.

It is common these days for Secret Service agents to hang back, out of camera view, when the president is in a confined room with people, like the journalists, who were allowed to bring with them pads and pens, small audio recorders, and of course their shoes.

At the press conference, the head of the president’s security detail scrambled to the lectern but not until the second shoe had been thrown. President Bush motioned to the agent to standby, declining to be hustled out of the room. At least five other American agents pour in from that exit behind the President, three took positions directly in front of the President, and other agents rushed into the midst of the seated reporters. No visible weapons were drawn, which seems to show unusual restraint, since agents are trained to assume that any assault is part of a broader attack by not one but several assailants.

At headquarters, it is a given that video will be reviewed over and over again, and become part of the Secret Service training — on what NOT to do.

Clearly this was an insult. Where were the secret services? I think they all should be fired. Clearly, they did not protect the President. I am apalled that this idot would throw a shoe at our President. If I would have been there, it would have been HELL to pay.
I mean no one disrespect our President.

That he was able to get BOTH shoes off and thrown is an embarrassment to the secret service.

Posted by: ctmom | December 15, 2008, 12:50 pm 12:50 pm

That guy should never have been able to throw the second dhow. Journalists stand up to ask q’s, I can understand one shoe getting off…but the secret service didn’t even MOVE until the second shoe had already been thrown. DISGRACEFUL.
The secret service is a team that NEVER gets a second chance, and no, they don’t get a break. I expect them to be 100% perfect, ALL THE TIME, for Bush, for Obama, for Clinton, for their wives and children, for whoever they are assigned to protect.

I can’t believe none of of the Secret Service agents was willing to take a shoe for President Bush.

Een though I do not like President Bush it was not good that the secret service did not act immediately. It’s a disgrace. I don’t care if you like him or not, what if he had gotten hurt or God forbid killed?
I agree with MJ…I expect them to be 100% perfect….especially in these times.

Normally I would say that the office deserves respect no matter who is President.
However, after the last 8 years of Bush and his reckless incompotence, I can see why anyone would be tempted to throw something at him.
He is the worst President of my lifetime and I was alive during Reagan so that’s saying a LOT.
The sooner Bush goes – the better. Good riddance!

Interesting… Bin Laden used a terrorist
disguised as a reporter to get close enough to and kill (his camera had a bomb in it) his main rival in Afgan….
This could have easily been MUCH worse….

So CH…..if I don’t like Obama’s politics and disagree with something he does, you wouldn’t mind if I were to throw my shoes at him?
You obviously don’t THINK any better than you can spell.

The stupidity of defending the “Shoe” attack on President Bush explains why this country is in trouble. He is the President of our country, and anyone who shows disrespect to him shows disrespect to all of us. Carter was the worst president ever, but I would have been furious at anyone who had done the same to him.
The blind hatred of our current President and disrespect shown to him from citizens of his own country has only encouraged others to show disrespect to him also.
It’s so ironic that those who scream tolerance and compassion the loudest are those who show such delight when our President, or anyone who doesn’t share their philosophy for that matter, is attacked verbally or physically.
I guess the secret service must have fallen in the “I don’t like him, so do whatever” camp.

This really was an insult to the United States as a whole.
While the Secret Service cannot predict every action an indiviudal may make in a closed room, they certainly should have reacted more quickly to the second shoe and stood in front of the President.
The reaction time seemed too slow. The reporter in front of the shoe thrower reacted more quickly than any security personnel.

Posted by: mp | December 15, 2008, 1:36 pm 1:36 pm

I think the SS had instructions to make the scene look “normal” with no obvious presence.
Bush has done that sort of thing before–remember him going back to a security line and dragging through somebody that had been stopped.
I think the SS was doing what they were told to do.

That “journalist” did what a lot of people wish they could (ch). He should have been shot. That was an assault on our President.

Posted by: RodBlago | December 15, 2008, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

LOL! This is absolutely hilarious! But yes sort of scary that the Secret Service didn’t even notice this guy taking his shoes off.
Did you see Bush laughing? Even HE thought it was hilarious.

Posted by: ScorpRedhead | December 15, 2008, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

So will Democrats be okay with it if some crazy Republican pops Obama in the jaw with a thrown boot because he disagrees with him?
Somehow I expect the answer will be that the shoe thrower should be gunned down by the Secret Service.

Posted by: Tabris | December 15, 2008, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

The Secret Service was “slow to react” on 9/11 also.

Posted by: dragon | December 15, 2008, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

Even though the S.S. was slow to react, Bush was certainly fast. Unusually so, could have been all the supposed hatred he has been sensing of late. Seriously, this incident is very unfortunate for us all. Maybe he deserved some of the bad press, maybe not.

When George Bush, Sr. came to my hometown to hand them a check for millions of dollars, local Democrats organized to jeer and heckle him attempting to drown-out his speech.
If I were him, I would have walked off the stage and taken the check with me.

Fine. I expect the same low protection for Obama then!
Ironic that the Iraqi reporter would be dead right now had he thrown those shoes during the Hussein government.

Posted by: Jim | December 15, 2008, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

There was only 2 seconds between shoe tosses….The SS responded as quickly as humanly possible…and the guy was going basically while he was throwing the second shoe. What do you guys expect?
Pres Bush is a favorite among the SS BTW. MUCH preferred over working for the overbearing Clintons.

Posted by: Starman | December 15, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

The Secret Service should have been in closer proximity to Bush and there should have been agents interspersed in the crowd. Known dissidents should never have been there in the first place. Finally, there was a reporter who pushed the “journalist” to the ground before Bush’s personal agent even responded at all. Watch the video again.
There was also a 5 second response window there after the first shoe was thrown. It was not 2 seconds.

Posted by: Tabris | December 15, 2008, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm

I’m imagining an SNL skit where the guy takes off one shoe and throws it, takes off the other shoe and throws it, then begins to take off additional articles of clothing one at a time, throwing each one – all while the secret service stands by, fiddling with their blackberrys, checking their watches, combing their hair, etc.
(Otoh, it did seem like a fairly controlled situation and they had no doubt ensured no one was armed prior to entering the room via metal detectors, etc.)

Posted by: Michael B | December 15, 2008, 3:00 pm 3:00 pm

I think they should make journalists remove their shoes before presidential press conferences, like they make us unwashed masses do before going through airport security!

Posted by: david | December 15, 2008, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

“Even though the S.S. was slow to react, Bush was certainly fast.”
Normally, when Bush has to duck like that, it’s because he’s thrown a soft pitch, and when that happens they usually come back alot faster than that. Dodging a shoe from that distance is alot easier than dodging a baseball.
Bush handled it just fine, and the SS responded in a way that I think their boss would approve of. A heavy handed return responce would have ended up making the Egyptian journalist look like a martyr.

Posted by: celebrim | December 15, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Perhaps the journalist who threw the shoes should be treated gently, with no more punishment than he would have received if he had thrown his shoes at a guest of Saddam Hussein while the latter was in power.
In the meantime, we should all be thankful that no one was harmed… when I first heard of the story, I was afraid Helen Thomas was doing a strip tease, which would undoubtedly have forced all men in the room to claw their eyes out, at the very least.

0:57 perp hits the floor
0:56 SS agent hands on perp

I think some of the commenters need to lighten up about the Secret Service. Sure it’s scary, but the worst the guy could do was throw shoes — nobody except the Iraqi PM was close enough to attack GWB at close range, and obviously the journalists were screened well enough to exclude guns and bombs.
And I don’t know what video some commenters are looking at, but in the video above, Secret Service agents responded promptly. The head of the detail may have gotten next to Bush a second later than optimal, but he had to assess the threat and see that his men were taking care of it before moving toward a President who already was waving him off.

With comments like the one from Barb who says she can understand it because she hates Bush, it is no wonder that our country has become what it is today. If we don’t respect our own people others won’t either. I can’t stand Barack Hussien Obama but I would not want him to be disrepected and not protected.
I have also been around for many years included Reagan, Clinton, Carter and I don’t believe and never will believe that Bush is the worst of the bunch.

Posted by: billb | December 15, 2008, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

Everyone is missing the most important point. Even though this man threw his shoes at President Bush certain things which were common before and still are common under governments in the region, did not happen.
He was not immediately cut down in a hail of gunfire. While he was arrested, he did not have his hands chopped off, his family was not arrested, his wife and daughters were not raped, he was not fed into a plastic shredding machine.
All of these things did not happen because of President Bush and the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces.
That’s gotta count for something.

I saw this and immidiately talked to my dad…the first thing i said was “where was the secret service?” i was shocked at their slow reaction…i think it was disgraceful what the journalist did and i was happy to see him being restrained by other Iraqis…
that being said, i’m not too surprised that it happened…it obviously represents the resentment and hatred Iraqis are harboring torwards Bush and the Iraq war…in some ways we have been disgraceful towards them…taking away their country, killing thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians…imagine if they came here and killed thousands of innocent Americans, wouldn’t you want to throw your shoes at their President/PM (providing that was how we insulted others)..Thank God though it was just shoes and nothing worse…
on a lighter note, i can not wait to watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert for their coverage of this incident

Posted by: Renee | December 15, 2008, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

In Ann Compton’s write-up she states that after the incident three Secret Service agents “took positions directly in front of the President.” In fact, they didn’t. To be directly in front of Bush they would need to be between the podium and Bush. His upper body was exposed the entire time even after the attacker was tackled leaving Bush open to further attack. I know he waved them off from removing him from the scene, but they didn’t put their bodies between him and other potential attackers.
I’m surprised that there are so many commenters who aren’t ashamed to admit that they were fine with this attack on Bush. How sick. Yet, I’m sure they’ll be the first to scream if anyone does this to Obama. It doesn’t matter if you like someone or not, no one deserves to be attacked and this attack was as much on us as citizens as it was an attack at Bush. You ought to know better.

It just goes to show you how ungrateful these people are. I just saw a documentary of Sadam’s regime and the thousand of fellow Iraqi’s he and his two sons had killed or buried alive including children, animals, homes destroyed, and only God knows what else and they have the nerve to treat the one President that tried to give them democracy and their lives back. Americans need to help people that will appreciate our help!! Agree with President Bush or not, he did not deserve that treatment.

For all of you who think the SS responded slow let me ask you a question! How long does it take for your mind to register a surprise going on around you? Most humans it would have taken a good 10 seconds. This guy got two shoes thrown in less than 3 seconds if you watch the clip! The SS acted in about 6 seconds which is faster than most of you could have reacted.

Posted by: chuck | December 15, 2008, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

Funny, that was my first thought watching the video, “Where’s the diving agents?” It looked like a cramped room. Were they uanble to get a clear/clean jump on the guy? Yeah, at first its humorous…then you realize that the guy could have been throwing a blade/kung fu star. Hmmm. They need to do better than that?

Posted by: Mike | December 15, 2008, 4:19 pm 4:19 pm

The guy that threw the shoes has a history of publicity stunts including his own kidnapping. He should have never passed the security screening.
And anybody who would applaud this is simply a moron with no common sense. Whatever you think is fair for Bush, must be fair for Obama. Unless of course your fevered psychopathic brain doesn’t understand the real world.

When the first shoe was thrown, the Secret Service agents should have responded [before the second shoe was thrown]. Someone asked how long it should take for this to register with the secret service agents to react, the answer is simple. ALOT FASTER THAN THEY DID. No one was watching the crowd? You see a man moving in his chair, abnormally, and you don’t react? I could have swore that was their job. He was fast enough to react.

WHAT REACTION ? The other Iraqi reporters are the ones that tackled him !

Posted by: Other Way | December 15, 2008, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

The Secret Service Agents did not respond promptly because of their training. They spring into action based on sounds: angry shouts, a gunshot, explosion. Also, agitated movement, scuffling, shoving the sight of a particular weapon.
Merely throwing a shoe was not part of their training.
It’s that simple.
Why did that idiot find it necessary to go back there again, anyway? What was he trying to prove?
Once again he embarrassed us all in front of the whole world by kissing the Iraqi President. What the hell is the matter with him, forgot how to shake hands?
Eight years of humiliation is enough…just go home George.

Posted by: joe k | December 15, 2008, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

This is great, Barbara. I think a key thing to do with blog posts, comments, or statements by politicians is to only read what comes after “however” or “but” or “on the other hand” or similar lines. Here’s the case: “Normally I would say that the office deserves respect no matter who is President. However…” She also started off with a “Normally,” so, I guess she’s not normal at the moment. It’s no surprise. Democrats only apply this “politics stop at the water’s edge” and “salute the office not the man” to their people. There’s no “our” president, anymore with such people, and it’s a shame. I didn’t like seeing Clinton burned in effigy in Greece, and my whole family comes from Greece. I don’t like seeing this, but honestly, who cares? It’s a stupid shoe. Dumb baby. Americans love dogs, and we don’t give two hoots about SHOES. It’s a dumb insult, and we don’t freak out of insults — say, like, everyone in that part of the world who thinks this is a big deal. The good news is, we’ve killed tens of thousands of people who think like this guy and planted a Democracy in the middle east. I’d take that legacy over being “a guy who threw a shoe.” Nice that he had shoes, though.

Posted by: Millard | December 15, 2008, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm

Shame! Shame! on the Secret Service. The second shoe should have never come close to hitting the President. The Secret Service should be reprimanded. I’ve been voting Democratic for sometime, but I as US Citzen would always protect my President. The was indeed a embarrassment the US.

Posted by: Bree | December 15, 2008, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

You know… The individual that threw the shoes was sitting down. If he had loafers on, the fact is I can slide my loafers off without being noticed. You can’t see feet in a sitting crowd unless you have an agent lying on the floor looking under chairs. Then they would be accused of looking up dresses.
He chucked a couple of shoes within seconds. No human be it secret service or not can respond that quickly. You would think by the comments here that the secret service should have been able to outrun the bullet that hit Reagan.
They are human and showed a large amount of restraint and I compliment them.

Posted by: pt7991 | December 15, 2008, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

Richard “The Shoe Bomber” Reid had “Just a shoe”. I liked the restraint to a point, but a giant vaudvillian hook might have been in order.

Posted by: ReallyBigShoe | December 15, 2008, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm

The Secret Service acted (or should I say didn’t act) disgracefully. I watched this video with my mouth hanging open wondering where the hell they were. The President was lucky it wasn’t something lethal. Those agents should be fired. And Tom Hopes, the point isn’t that it was a shoe – none of us are that obtuse. The POINT is that the Secret Service wasn’t doing their job ,they weren’t watching the crowd and they were extremely slow to respond. And with regard to your statement about politicians having tomatoes and eggs thrown at them – this wasn’t just any politician. This was the President of the United States. The shoe is not the point. And Chuck maybe the average person wouldn’t react that quickly, but these agents are trained to protect the life of the President and they are trained to be fast. They aren’t amateurs. When Regan was shot his detail was lightening fast.

Posted by: Lee-Ann | December 15, 2008, 5:02 pm 5:02 pm

Mike (4:19 p.m.) said he could just as easy have been throwing a knife or a kung fu throwing star. No, he could not, and that’s the point.
I guarantee you all the journalists and others were screened for weapons. They stopped short of confiscating shoes, which seems reasonable. Nobody except the Iraqi PM (presumably safe) was allowed anywhere near the President. It’s an incident to be nervous about, but Bush was in no danger. Even if he takes a shoe full in the face it would not be life-threatening.

Posted by: Kirk Petersen | December 15, 2008, 5:03 pm 5:03 pm

I consider myself a Liberal/Centerist. However this has no political bearing. The President must be protected at all costs, no precedent can be set where it is appropriate to attack the person, no matter the disagrement. That is why we have elections and options such as impeachment. Any advocacy or support of violence is naive and uneducated hatred and has no place in this country. Having observed the assault, I feel that the Secret Service response was inadequate. The President should have been covered and removed from the room, the throwing of the shoes could have been a distraction, followed by more serious actions. A review of this situation is required and some type of disciplining is in order.
FYI, this is an opinion from someone who has been around since and saw Harry Truman and thinks Bush is the worst president certainly in my lifetime.

I don’t think the Secret Service can start making people leave their shoes at the door, now. But that infuriates me. This is our President, for better or worse. He insulted us all. I think he should be fired and barred from reporting.
That being said, I do feel for the guy. He was allegedly captured and tortured and some of his family killed. He needs mental help.
Also, I wish the media would show the rest of the recording. Supposedly Bush won the room over afterward. Why just show the shoe throwing? Why just the negative stuff? Let’s see how Bush won over the room. Or is he too unpopular to have objective news coverage?

Okay, new rule. Anyone meeting with the President will not only be searched, they will have to give up their shoes at the entrance!!! I’m a little disappointed that Bush didn’t catch one of the shoes and fire it back. But like Bush said, isn’t it wonderful that the guy lives in a country where he only gets thrown in jail and a little butt kicking for throwing a shoe at a visiting head of state instead of the firing squad.

It just goes to show you how ungrateful these people are. –Niki
———————-
Ungrateful? No reasonable person is suggesting that Saddam Hussein was a great leader or that the Iraqi people deserved him, but the United States invaded this country and have occupied it for nearly six years. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, millions have been displaced.
When you live under occupation for five or six years and see your neighbors and family members killed, then I think you might be in a position to make your observation, but not now.

Cheers to the President for grace under fire. He ducks the first one nicely keeping his eyes on the attacker the entire time. The second one he just bats out of the way without moving at all.
VERY cool!

I suspect that had the Secret Service agents come out with guns drawn, some of the same critical people would have been critical of there “overblown response.”
It was a shoe. A shoe. The room and all of the individuals in it had already been properly searched (that is to say that they knew that there was no bomb in the shoe). Make no mistake, for NONE of the agents to have jumped up and thrown themselves into the podium, it was likely the correct response. If this had been a less secure crowd, we would have seen a different response.
Secret Service Agents are not bouncers who thrive on over-reactions and bustin’ heads to let off steam.
In interest of disclosure, I have the highest amount of respect for the Office of the President, even when I don’t necessarily have the greatest respect for the person who occupies the office. I had major problems with Clinton (and yes, I voted for Bush) and now I have some major issues with Bush (I voted for Obama), but I am an American above any partisan label.
I don’t believe that Bush being attacked by a shoe is funny. But at the same time, I would not want to see the Secret Service spray bullets across a room to protect the President from a flying shoe. They have better training than that.

Posted by: KM | December 15, 2008, 5:35 pm 5:35 pm

I believe the security detail had it right. They had done due diligence in securing the room content and there were agents close enough to stop anyone that would get close enough with an life threatning object in hand. Threats outside the room were of greater concern. The only change I see is a more critical assessment of the sentiment and recent statements of those in attendance; then a tighter security presence near any potential hostile.

Posted by: MBell_TX | December 15, 2008, 5:36 pm 5:36 pm

Here’s the deal. The secret Service is trained to do what? To watch the president get killed???? I don’t think so. The fact that the guy could throw both shoes really scares me. And i can tell you right now. If it was Obama, ever single person would be outraged. Just cuz Bush did some stupid things does not mean he deserves to be treated wrongly. Anyone who thinks he did and would be outraged if it was Obama needs to get a clue. Every single person in the secret service who was there should be fired immediately. That’s all i got to say.

Dirty little secret the Secret service doesn’t like to admit: Never in its 160 year history has it prevented an attack against the President. They just clean up afterwards. Gerald Ford got shot at – twice – by Manson cultists. John Hinkley walked right up to Reagan and the only reason the President didn’t die was the explosive bullets malfunctioned. Kennedy was shot in an open car in Dallas.
They discourage the saner ones from trying. If you don’t mind getting gang-tackled and hauled off to jail afterwards you can usually get close enough to the President to throw a shoe or an egg or even something lethal. The President is a *political* leader and that means he has to occasionally appear in public. If the Secret Service had had its druthers he would have held a video teleconference from the White House instead of physically going to Iraq. They wouldn’t have minded putting up a bulletproof shield between the podium and the press.
I find it kind of interesting that most 60+ year old men would have gotten beanbagged. It’s a tribute to President Bush’s physical condition and training regime that he moved faster than the shoes. Look at the video again: the assailant didn’t lob slowballs at Mr. Bush yet he easily avoided both of the shoes hurled at him. Many men half his age would have walked away with a size 10 imprint on their faces.

We would make use of the 2nd amendment and then some. Don’t be so scared of the middle east. Remember Iran hasn’t attacked anyone preemptively for over 250 years. MNEagle – You are right democratic presidents are also guilty. Sanctions sponsored by the US under Clinton in the 90s killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Albright said it was worth it. Now Bush and co. have invaded, and the ensuing environment has made it possible for hundreds of thousands of more Iraqis to perish. Is this justification for the shoe incident. If there ever was a reason, I would say yes.

Why don;t you and Chris and Ch and MM and all the peace loving Iranians you so warmly embrace go to Mecca and hit yourself in the heads with sharpened machetes like the lunatics you support do in the name of religion. Take a look at their faces when the blood flows down their foreheads while they swarm like madmen and ask yourself—why are you defending them when it is so obvious they cannot be dealt with in a rationale way. Your peacenick ways have never worked—see, e.g. Carter and Iran (long before Bush and reagan). These people understand one thing only-blunt force trauma. While you are having a peaceful sleep in with Chris in San Fran, don;t forget to get in the fetal position and kiss your ass good bye if we don;t destroy these lunatics before they destroy us. 20 Years down the line, the world will remember Bush as a patriot and a good human being. Because 20 years down the line the war between Islam and the rest of the world(which does not want to be ruled by a fundamentalistic Islamic Caliphate) will be over, and in that war the Rest of the world that is the freedom loving people and countries and America will win, and fundamentalist Islam will lose, for the good of all humanity and with God’s blessings. The real reason to be in Iraq is clearly to be in a strategic location in the middle east for such a war. Clinton refused saying it was a political risk in 1997, 1998. Bush took up the challenge not bothering about a bad name. American presidents dont plan wars for the FUTURE, it is someone else whose name canneot be revealed, presidents only say YES or NO.

Incidents like this can happen in democracies – and usually nobody gets shot. Risky though it was, I have to congratulate the President and the Secret Service detail for taking a low-key approach. Some Arabs, with their slave mentality, think this so-called “reporter” got away with something by insulting the big, powerful American President. That American President demonstrated that he’s not a tyrant or a psychopath, and that he values freedom of speech and the rule of law more than his own “honor.” I doubt many Middle Easterners will get it. I don’t care, either.

As the “Iraqi Journalist” ‘broadcasts’ from Egypt (obviously for fear of the Bush puppet regime) we should “encourage” him to throw a shoe or two at his host President, the democrat and freedom fighter Mr. Hosni Mubarak.
I’d like to see where that gets him. (;

I also believe the SS didn’t have enough time to react, but I have to wonder why they were not situated closer to him knowing how much he is hated in that country.

Regarding the speed at which this jerk managed to throw two shoes in rapid succession: the guy’s wearing loafers or loosened, unlaced shoes; surreptitiously pushes them off with his opposite foot; reaches down, grabs and throws both in a few seconds.
There is now an argument for having agents stand close by, on either side of the podium.

It isn’t bizarre, except to someone who has no clue about middle eastern culture. Bush was talking about pulling out of Iraq, instead of imposing his will with an iron fist.
This was taken as weakness and then he was insulted… they knew he wouldn’t do anything about it, so this is what happened.
In Arab culture, responding to insults/attacks with quick violence is seen as strength, in american culture its seen as a personal weakness. These cultural miscommunications are the cause of many of our difficulties in relations with the middle east.

Posted by: Doc Merlin | December 15, 2008, 7:04 pm 7:04 pm

President Bush has NOT killed millions of Iraqis. It is the Iraqis killing other Iraqis. You liberals just need to go drink more kool-aid and all will be right with your world on Jan. 20th. One question though, when Obama doesn’t pull the troops out for another couple of years will you be telling us how many Iraqis he has killed? Just wondering.

Posted by: proudright | December 15, 2008, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

If this shoe throwing at the president will be a new fad, President Obama will have to make special preparations for his news conferences. One way would be,that all news reporters take off they’r shoes, and leave they’r shoes outside at the door. Or build glass protected podiums, that would stop any shoe thrown at it.Or president Obama should were a strong football helmet.

Posted by: Joe | December 15, 2008, 7:09 pm 7:09 pm

I guess you would consider me to be a liberal because of my vote for President-Elect Obama. I am not a fan of Bush but to disrespect the President in such a manner should not be tolerated by either the left or the right. I do believe that the SS was very slow in responding and they should be reprimanded. I am proud of the President on his quick reflexes. You in ciber world must admit that Mr. Bush reaction was faster that the SS could respond. May God protect the President and the President-Elect in these trying times. Peace!

Posted by: Marcy512 | December 15, 2008, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm

The Secret Service agents looked totally confused, and of course arrived too late. In such a situation, the President has no business waving off his protection. The office of the President is what should be protected; the image a particular President wants to project—”hey, I’m cool with that”— is secondary. Clearly, the President by making light of the matter, had no idea he was being deeply insulted. No cultural awareness. And he’s been to Iraq how many times?
The shoe thrower was taken down by fellow journalists, not the SS.
In my view, the President is way too forgiving of shoddy government performance such as in evidence on the tape (my viewing from the BBC yesterday supports the 4-5 second time lapse). No heads rolled after 9/11, either.

It’s all up to Obama to repair all the damages done by Bush & his administration and prove that America is still a friend of the Arab world.

Posted by: Selvarajah | December 15, 2008, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm

Not one of those agents was willing to take a “shoe” for the president. They responded slowly, not realizing that a shoe could have some plastic explosive, which could have truly injured our president, if not killed him.
Yet, it was so unexpected; sort of that infamous day, 11 September 2001. Who would have thought that you could use our own airliners as weapons?
Next time, a quicker response on the part of our Secret Service.

I suppose it’s possible the journalist was disrespecting the Office of President, but I suspect his disrespect, like mine, is for the man.
I might feel a touch of indignation if I felt that Shrub, himself, had any respect for the office. But he shows disdain for the office and the for Constitution, which he swore to uphold and defend. No president has done a greater disservice to the rule of law than this one, and I for one don’t care who takes his place as long as someone does (not really, but it sounds good), and January 20 can’t come soon enough to suit me.

An Iraqi journalist chooses to voice his opinion of the US Pres, and presumably of the Iraqi Pres who’s working with him, in a dramatic but relatively non-violent manner. WE WON!!!!!!!
Freedom of speech for Iraqi citizens- check
Freedom of Iraqi press to report the incident- check
Choosing to use speech instead of weapons- check
Every voice of dissent in Iraq is evidence that the IDEAS of freedom have taken root and are spreading through the region. We shouldn’t worry what a given individual thinks about Bush or the US- those who have experienced freedom will not be quick to give it up, and that makes them our natural allies over the long run.
Oh, and let’s not forget that the President and the Secret Service remained calm and took the matter in stride.

I am disappointed that ABC is making such a big deal over the shoe throwing incident in Iraq. After that reporter gets out of jail, he will be able to write a book and make a lot of money because of the fame ABC has given him. If that reporter represents all of Iraq, then we should have left long ago. If he does not, it would have appropriate for ABC to conduct a poll to determine the national sentiment.

People can criticize GWB and our efforts in Iraq and apperrently a portion of the Iraqi people don,t want us there either. If it weren’t for the USA the Iraqi citizens and their press would not even know what it would be like to openly voice their opinions unless it was to praise Saddam. The Secret Service reacted slow, but President Bush reacted very fast and with a great sense of humor. Note the smile he had on his face throughout the incident.
Yes, it was intended as a definite insult to our country but President Bush’s reaction was the greatest and really helped to diffuse the redirect. President Bush was fast as he ducted and didn’t take the insult seriously as he smiled at the shoe tossing. This put the rude man in his place as the fool he is.
Kudos to Bush for a great reaction to a stupid and offensive action. This shows the character of both men involved

Had Saddam been speaking the man would be dead by now.
Thank God for George Bush who had the guts to take down the dictator and give freedom of speech (within reason) to the people of iraq.
To those who are happy with the shoe incident: Would you give your blood for my freedom, like our soldiers are giving for the iraqi people or just complain because we are not popular in communist and socialist countries.

Let’s face it, the S S was caught with their pants down, and the reporter was caught with his shoes off. This so called, reporter is just another example of the mentality of those who have lived under a strict dictatorship too long. They still wish to use agresssion first, and diplomacy second, if at all. Who knows what might dwell in the mind of the thrower, how many members of his family are gone to U S firepower ?? Maybe we will never know. I certainly don’t dondone the actions of this man, regardless of his reasons, but I do expect to be bitten if I walk into a hill of fire ants. They should have been more observant during every minute of his visit there. Dropping your guard is an invitation to those who promote hatred, whether justified, or unjustified. Just be glad it was not a grenade instead of a shoe. I find nothing I like about Bush, except his departure which is upcoming. Thank goodness. Disagreeing with almost everything he has done, I still think those who commit such an act should be put away for a very long time, and give them plenty of time to reflect on their animalistic, and immature actions. Some people will always wish to settle a dispute with agression, instead of arbitration, and maturity. If we don’t get better at protecting our officials it is just going to get worse with the increased morons we have helped to develop. I think is was egotistically, a bad decision to go there in the first place, what did it accomplish, and what did he expect a dinner roast ?? Two generations of Bush Beans on their lives, regardless of how horrible it might have been for most of them, is still going to have many generations of hatreed in many Iragi minds.

Patriot-
You’re right, there is a difference. We trump up phony intel, bend it to fit our wishes, then go to war as if we’re the righteous ones. (Of course I’m not speaking of all US citizens, mainly just the hypocritical better-than-thou Bible-banging neocons.) I, for one, would prefer the shoe.
As far as the American people voting Bush into office, they did not. The US voters voted for the Dems. The Electoral College voted Bush into office. Thanks to the power of the incumbency and a weak Dem ticket, Shrub was able to prevail and pull in both the popular vote and the EC vote on his second time around. It almost makes me wish for a third term eligibility just see him thoroughly trounced by both parties this time around. No, not you neocons out there, I know y’all still think he walks on water.

The arab world sees a flying shoe as an insult. I think wearing shoes is smart. Some of the arab world thinks strapping an explosive vest to your child is ok. Educated people don’t see that. Some people are stupid, and in dire need of an education. Killing the stupid ones helps, but without an education, what about the other billion people? Is there hope there? Will they build a nice quality car; something we as Americans have forgotten how to do. Will they build airplanes of high quality and reliability? Will they figure a way to help solve world hunger? Will they do ANYTHING that doesn’t require blowing somebody up? How bout finding something more than oil, because we all seem to need lots of oil (for now).I can do without a tank of gas. Can you do without food? Well, good luck with that one…

The shoe toss is an insult to the President and an assault that should be dealt with seriously. The reporter that threw the shoes need to be slapped 100 times with his own shoe to teach him a lesson in manners. Its a disgrace to the Iraqis to have their citizen behave this way. As for the news agency that the reporter works for, they need to be banned from all future press conference. To date I have not seen an apology from the Iraqi government or from the Iraqi news agency. Although to the US citizens this is nothing however to the Iraqis this is an insult that should be treated as such. If Sadam had still be in power the reporter should surely be dead by now. If it wasn’t for the President’s athletic ability he could have been hurt from the incident. To many of you ungrateful US citizens, imagine how many other terrorist acts could have been committed if it wasn’t for the President to protect us all.
As for the Secret Service agents on the scene, they all need to go back to basic training. Their performance were unacceptable.

Posted by: DSE | December 15, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

There was a call from the Iraqi President to lock up the shoe thrower for 7 or 9 years. While it was certainly disrespectful, the level of loss and frustration by this man and so many other people in Iraq is palpable.
The people of Iraq have been through a lot with the level of violence in their country. We have also paid a high price in the loss of our great American soldiers.
I think that George Bush should call for the release of this man. He should acknowledge that he understands the level of frustration of the Iraqi people and so many who that have lost family members to violence in Iraq, and that he got the message loud and clear.
I think such a gesture would show Bush to be sympathic toward the Iraqi people. He could simply conclude by saying while he doesn’t condone the throwing of shoes, he certainly understands the level of loss and frustration that so many in Iraq are feeling.

Posted by: Common Sense | December 15, 2008, 10:06 pm 10:06 pm

Oh c’mon… This article is a bash on the secret service, giving complete ignorance to the content that is mentioned in the article! People wear shoes. They were screened for weapons. There were no weapons in that room. The secret service knew that there were no weapons in that room. The secret service didn’t show unimaginable restraint, slow response or poor judgment… They reacted to a threat at a level that was precisely where they allowed that threat to be. They were prepared (having screened EVERYBODY SEVERAL TIMES IN MULTIPLE MANNERS) and therefore knew that only people with clothing (including shoes) as well as some journalistic materials were in the room. Any possible threat that may be posed in this situation is one in which may not in any way dictate the use of firearms. The Secret Service did their job far more beautifully and tactfully than the contributing journalists of this article apparently have ever known in proportion to their own profession.
Poor reporting people… poor at best.

I am glad that someone is bringing up the real issue here. Its not that some dumb reporter is now a folk hero to some very nasty people in the ME. No, its that this creep got both shoes off and hurled them both at our President!!
That he got one shoe off and was able to launch it is shocking enough. But both??!!
I never thought I would see the day that our Secret Service would fail the President so embarrassingly for all the world to see.
Did they get lazy? Were they too trusting of technology? Would this story be so funny (to some) if one of the shoes had struck the President and injured him? To me there is nothing funny either about the insult itself or the way that the Secret Service men looked like fools. So much for their reputation in the world. I wouldn’t doubt that most of what has kept our President’s so safe in the past is due to the intimidating reputation of his security people. Now, not so much.

No it wasn’t a good throw and the clown missed not once but twice. If you are 5 feet from the President, you might throw low thinking he might duck the throw, given two chances you might use your brain if it works. While I’m not a Bush fan AT ALL I have to say two things: #1) for a 61 y/o man he showed surprisingly good reflexes at calmly avoiding both shoes. He didn’t over-react or flail about wildly. He showed nice economy of motion and avoided the hit. #2) The secret service, however, was entirely too slow. Once that first shoe hit the wall that agent should have been between the president and the guy who threw it. No, I don’t think drawing weapons and locking down the room would have been appropriate, but a little hustle on the part of the guy whose job it is to take a bullet would have been nice to see. The president shouldn’t have better reflexes than his body-man.

That fact notwithstanding: The assailant should have been gunned down before the first shoe reached the lecturn.

While a part of me is a little giddy at this whole incident. I am a little bit offended that someone could be able to get away with this. I’m left wing through and through, but I worry about Obama’s security before and especially after this incident. I do think it is an affront to the US, but I also think what we, as a country have done to the nation of Iraq and its people. So a shoe throwing incident is sort of a minor “chicken’s coming home to roost” incident. Let’s hope the major one isn’t following. That being said…probably the only compliment I will give this current (worst.president.ever) is that he certainly showed some nimbleness and agility from dodging that show. Must be from all the practice he has from dodging and weaving journalists all these years.

Posted by: Greg | December 15, 2008, 10:30 pm 10:30 pm

The guy was US hating lunatic — he threw those shoes to insult the US, not just our President. I think the Secret Service and President Bush were right to not over-react. However I think the guy should go to jail for assault. Under Saddam and the Baathists, if he pulled a trick like this, could you imagine what would’ve been his fate?

Posted by: starboardhelm | December 15, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

I immediately felt that the Secret Service was too far removed from Bush. There should have been an agent on him the moment the stir began and at the very, very least immediately after the first shoe. Why was there no one behind Bush and why was the closet agent 10 or 12 feet away? I’ve never been a fan of Bush, but he’s the Prez irregardless and the Secret Service did a shoddy job, I don’t care what they say. My goodness, the president was in Iraq, wasn’t he?

We respect the office because that is what we were taught to do and we haven’t seen any REAL atrocities..i.e. some or all of our innocent family members killed or harmed due to war. This man was detained for a significant amount of time previously by American Armed Forces and separately kidnapped by Iranian militants. I would be willing to bet he has seen atrocities against his family also. What would you do in that situation? Would you respect the man that advocated for us to go into this country and start this war? There are a million arguments that you can make about this, but he was upset, rightly so, and reacted. Thank god it all ended well, but it is important to see both sides and recognize the horrors that people from that region have seen and the hopelessness and grief that can drive people to do crazy things like throwing their shoes….many times they do things that are much worse.

Or, would you pack it in and go home after 9/11? I hope Obama does a good job. But I don’t think he could or would’ve been able to fill Bush’s shoes up to this point.(Parden the pun) Anyone who says any different is a true jackass. Hail to the chief!

ABC says:
At headquarters, it is a given that video will be reviewed over and over again, and become part of the Secret Service training — on what NOT to do.
I think they played it perfectly. The secret service are not superhumans. What were they supposed to do, leap across the room and catch the shoes. The guy was 15 feet away!! And as far as Bush “declining to be hustled out of the room” I watched the video. A guy walked up to him where he said “I’m alright” What is with these so called “journalists” at ABC? You guys really do think you come off as unbiased don’t you. You’re insane….literally. And I thought Bush had great reflexes. You could tell he wanted to kick that guys ass after the first shoe. I say let’s withdraw and let the Iraqis feel the consequences when they take the U.S. for granted. That was total disrespect!!! What a shame that the liberal media glorifies this “shoe” incident as if it’s what President Bush deserves. They even played up the crowds in the streets in their portrail of the newsman as a “folk hero”. Isn’t it ironic that the newsman and those crowds had the freedom to do what they did, because of our President’s leadership and the courage of our and our allies’ fighting men and women against tyranny in that region after 9/11. Tyranny that would not have allowed such a display of “freedom”, but would have brought torture and death on all who had participated (and upon their relatives as well). How soon they forget…how soon we all forget.

I find it dangerous that the service, who’s sole mission is to guard the president, reacted too slow and was NOT PREPARED for an out there situation. The lead agent always has to be on guard and the fact that he took that long to get to the president is a MAJOR PROBLEM. The reporter on the left next to the guy that threw the show and to his right were also problems in that they did not try to stop the shoe man. Those reporters should also never be allowed at a Presidential press conference ever again just for their inaction . With all the training these men go thru and the detection equipment used to protect a President it is now time that the service starts thinking outside of the box for all possible if not likely scenarios. This is a very serious breach in the security bubble that surrounds a President. Another notice…looking at video there was not an agent to left of Bush and they had to come in from a back door…..VERY BAD…..Bush did a better job than the secret service agents did at protection of his person. Oh come on folks…..you don’t see the Secret Service guys on the tape at first for a reason…they don’t sit in the front row for a reason. They are not to be on camera, for a reason. That was a secure room, all the people in it had been vetted and were approved. Is the Secret Service supposed to worry about shoe throwers? NO. They did their job, as they should have, under guidelines for that scenario, ie: a secure room with a protestor, not an open situation with an assailant/terrorist. Big difference folks, and sometimes these SS guys also do….drumroll please….undercover work! Has anyone EVER seen an interview with a former member of a president’s detail who wasn’t part of an historical event such as an assasination or attempted one? NO. That’s because they do more than just protect the Pres, they are federal agents, AND they investigate counterfiet cases for the govt. So, when it comes to a press conference such as this in a secure position, there is nothing wrong with their reaction time or positioning in the room.
However, it is a factual certainty that this scuffle will become a training exercise for new agents, and an excuse for a departmental review and what not….but they all know they did their jobs that day. You guys should too.

What you are forgetting is that this happened in a war zone. Just because the college boys did a sweep for weapons and the press was searched means absolutely nothing in a war zone.
I am happy it turned out well. However, because of the complete incompetence of the protective detail we could have lost a President. If you serve on such a detail it doesn’t matter who the protectee is, he is your protectee. In a war zone, the aggressor should have been taken out and the protectee removed to a safe area. The protectee doesn’t make that decision, the team performs as trained. This is the greatest breach of security I have even seen. Those agents should be immediately relieved and sent packing. I am happy I wasn’t a member of the team, you libs would be screaming for my prosecution for performing my duty. Fortunately, Barry is going to mesmerize the Islamofacists with a speech and world peace will be secured.

Yes, Iraqis don’t respect Bush because liberals bad mouth him so much. Really, what planet are you Bush apologists living on? They don’t respect Bush because he took over their country and is occupying it for no good reason. This was an insult to our country? What about the insult of building a wall through Baghdad to keep people we don’t like trapped in their own neighborhood? Put yourself in their shoes: A foreign country invades your land because they don’t like the way you’re running your country. They stay for more than five years, and none of their justifications for war turn out to be true. So you get mad and throw a shoe, and these foreign invaders whine that you have insulted their country. No wonder everyone hates Americans so much. Look in the mirror.

As Ed Sullivan always said, “We have a really big shoe tonight!”. Seriously, I think tackling the guy would have been worse than the way they handled it. It was only a shoe! Everyone went through security and maybe even had to take their shoes off. The guy maybe didn’t put his back on and no one noticed. Taclking and beating him to a pulp would have made the people there even more angry with the US. I think they handled it fine and the President took it in stride. He put the assisting agent at ease and stayed put at the podium. You might not like his policies but you have to respect his handling of this shoe thing!

They did all that was humanly possible. Nobody envisaged that Shoes could be used as weapons against the President.
If Shoues were not allowed in, Pens would, Midgets would and Notepads would. These could be used as Weapons too.

Interesting that many people here said that though they may not like Bush, an attack on him is an attack on the whole country.
When we attack leaders of countries like Iran and North Korea, calling them names as if we are children in a schoolyard, a number of people in those countries get behind their leaders, just like some of us are doing here.
Perhaps there are 2 lessons to take away – people who hate our leaders do not necessarily hate us (just as we don’t hate the citizens of countries whose leaders we can’t stand)… and maybe we should undermine leaders who hate us with a little more maturity, and not create support for them in their countries…
My 2 cs.

It is said that a certain journalist threw shoes at president bush
But what he said was ignored and not telecasted by most agencies!
“This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.”
This man has been taken into custody…undountably to be ‘questioned’
Isn’t this the spirit of democracy?
Freedom of speech?
I don’t condone the action with the shoes – but the message shouldn’t be lost, should it? How is Bush different from Hitler?
Or is this a democratic farce?
Please forward this to everyone you know who believes in the freedom of speech.

Boy, the left-wing hate machine is really feeling its oats now. That shoe could have had a bomb or other weapon concealed in it. In the time it took for that “person” to bend over, take off his shoe, and then chuck it, the SecSvc should have been on him AND blocking for the President. Oh well, we’ve got “diplomats” running the Navy, why not ushers for POTUS protection? I wonder how will this affect Obama’s protection/accessibility going forward.
BTW, “Barb”, the worst ‘President’ was Clinton’s first term: Waco massacre; Rwanda genocide; 1st WTC attack; Somalia; Haiti; Raising taxes on dead people; Troopergate; Travelgate; 96 Re-election campaign finance cesspool; Islamic terror foothold in Kosovo. Second term, not as bad: Lied under oath and repealed Glass Steagall Act. Some of us still remember the truth but you’re free to live in a fact-free zone.

Shame! The head of a state can be insulted in this manner.
He is the one who liberated their nation and this is what he gets.
They will never be satisfied because no matter how much you give them they always seem dissatisfied and want more.
Give them Palestine, they will still continue violence, give them Kashmir they will still terrorize India.
Basically they love violence and want an excuse to start it.

What Muntathar Al-Zaidi did was a savage and shameful act that does not represent any educated Iraqi citizen. Iraqis are good people and never treat their guests in this way. That journalist is from Sadir-city in Baghdad, where Anti-American young cleric, Muqtada Al-Sadir has a lot of influence. So, he might did so on behalf of the non-Iraqi enemies of the United States.
In Iraqi Kurdistan we received Americans with flowers and so far no American or coalition soldier was killed or insulted in Kurdistan.
Once again, what that person did against President Bush does not represent the majority of other Iraqis (especially Kurds)who very much appreciate liberating Iraq from dictatorship. President Bush is hailed as a hero by many Iraqis.

1) Please don’t refer to the Secret Service as the SS.
Let’s save that for the Nazi’s and “their” secret police.
2) If the Secret Service was lax in any way they need to bone up on security. This is especially true in the case of Obama with every racist nut-job sharpening their knives at home.
3) I’ve had mechanical pencils that would have made pretty good daggers yet at the airport they are probably more likely to take away my kiddy sized nail clippers if I dare bring them. So the point is if we have to take away shoes then shoes it is!
4) There is something to be said about earning respect and demanding respect. How about a President who doesn’t need to demand respect cause he has earned it with his actions.
5) Bush’s adolescent response to this incident is the real embarrassment. Sure he is POTUS but this is just one in a series of embarrassments and policy decisions that are disasters.
6) This POTUS is impeachable or should be.
7) This POTUS could be brought up on war crimes.
8) So if the worst he gets is a shoe thrown at him that is lucky.
9) And the Secret Service needs to do a better job.

The Secret Service failed badly. Even if they don’t pull weapons, they should be close enough to shield the President with their bodies. Security officials have apparently forgotten radical Islamists posing as reporters assasinated General Ahmed Shah Masood, the leader of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, the day before Sept 11th.

Posted by: Bobc | December 16, 2008, 7:48 am 7:48 am

I think the secret service acted approximately. They did there job. I am in the military and sometimes you have the unforeseen you have to deal with. Deadly force or the escalation of force is something you have to be trained in. Given the situation it seemed to me that our secret service members did the right thing.

Posted by: robert | December 16, 2008, 8:07 am 8:07 am

The Secret Service should have “shoed” the assailant away. The man was no doubt a “heel” without a “sole”.

Posted by: Rufus T. Firefly | December 16, 2008, 8:46 am 8:46 am

Some of the “reporters” were, in fact, security. Weapons were carried concealed for this press meeting. Armed agents were off camera, in the perimeter. They had the capability to execute an “L” shaped ambush of anyone who drew, or assumed a deadly force posture. If someone were to jump up shout, advance on the president, ball up fists, etc., they would have reacted accordingly. They would have restrained them, shooting only if he, or others escalated the threat level. They were off camera for a reason.

I’d be careful in what I post if I were you. That sounds kind of threatening to me. The S.S. might just agree and decide to look up your IP address and come have a little ‘chat’ with you. “nobody envisaged planes flying into the world trade centre either”
Nobody except NORAD before 9/11.
“WASHINGTON — In the two years before the Sept. 11 attacks, the North American Aerospace Defense Command conducted exercises simulating what the White House says was unimaginable at the time: hijacked airliners used as weapons to crash into targets and cause mass casualties.
One of the imagined targets was the World Trade Center.”
Which brings us back to President Bush and the Secret Service at Booker Elementary.

The pair of shoes has a very significant meaning.1 shoe is for Bush Sr. and the other is for Bush Jr.
Two(2) years also means …1 year for the father and the other year for the son.
The shoe brand is ‘Regal” shoe.
The secret service did a perfect job by being very calm and professional. They never panicked or threatened and not even President Bush.WHY? Because they already made very sure(100% guaranteed)that no one inside that room had any leathal weapon to attack anybody.Bush was right when he said that “that is his (journalist)way of gaining attention”.I bet if he has no shoes,he would have thrown his clothes including his underwear!hehehe.

He correctly assessed a situation, reacted calmly and surely, and prevented an overreaction. To top it off, he lands a perfect one-liner!

The thing that pisses me off about this incident and the media reaction is real story is lost. The real story was Maliki thanking Bush for giving Iraq the opportunity for a demorcracy where people can throw shoes in protest and not be put in a wood chipper.

Seriously…Regardless of who is President…one should review this tape frame by frame…it is totally unacceptable that SS was not in front of the President within 3 sec…not 6 sec……if the shoes had been weapons the president would not have made it.
This is NOT protecting the President…and the enemies of the US WILL study this….and God help us if they react before the secret service does.

To: Unacceptable. Your comment regarding the inclusion of the bombing of the World Trade Center with planes begs me to ask, what role did Iraq play in this event to compare it to a shoe thrown as an insult by someone living and working in Iraq? I still don’t get the connection. I also remember Jimmy Carter and Reagan and whoever, all the way back to Kennedy and Eisenhower. I wasn’t happy that Reagan’s trickle down economics never reached Missouri, but I didn’t see him disregard the laws of this country so blatantly as W. has! So, even though I don’t condone any kind of attack or “the throwing of shoes” at our President, I think that this story is about the Secret Service

You got to love these republican necon types on this blog. They do love their cowboy Bush.

I am not a big fan of this presidents failed policies but this is embarrasing. Our secret service should be ashamed. That guy should have never been able to get his second shoe off. I don’t care if it was “just a shoe”. Terrible…

The Agents were not in a spread defense. The first shoe never should have happened. Remember the movie ” Bodyguard ” Having done this detail for President Clinton, Federal Agents lack common street sense because they have no experienced trainers. Sorry to say it that way.

Just couldn’t stay quiet on this one. To make the conclusion that this one man’s actions are representative of Iraq’s entire population is ludicrous! My son has served three tours in Iraq and the vast majority of Iraqi’s he’s encountered do not hate President Bush or Americans. Sure they would like the U.S. to leave but they understand the country’s not ready to protect itself yet. Don’t believe the media hype. We’re doing the right thing.

I can see one shoe maybe but for 2 thats crazy the S.S. drop the ball here and made the us look like Big Ass
I am no S.S. but if i would have been there that man would have been eating the Rug!
the lot of them should be let go even when they came in the room they didnt look like they new what was going on.

Oh you funny americans, you really think a shoe is a deadly weapon? Throwing shoes at people is a childish reaction, and have to be considered as a provocation, but not as a deadly attack!

It’s obvious–the Secret Service was in on it! Why else would they be standing around with their thumbs up their butts while letting the attack continue for a second shoe-throwing round??? They are a disgrace to their profession and to Americans in general!!!!

What an embarasment for the Secret Service. They were ALL sleeping at the wheel! How can they prevent an attack on
the President with their backs to the audiance. Shouldn’t they be FACING the audiance?!

as much as we like it or hate it. it was an act of GOD’s (ALLAH) will.
No SS detail can prevent unthinkable/umimaginable unless you get the audience dead naked which in itself will be humiliating! With what our country has done in the name of protecting US citizen and still doing, what more to come, who knows. During Prhphet Abraham days, Nimrod had an insect in his head. solution? his only solace was that his aides keep hitting him with shoes as the story goes in Muslim world. ALLAH knows better .

It’s a disgrace! The SS should have ‘dropped’ the journalist in seconds and proceeded to kick some booty! Guarantee no other journalist would pull that stunt again

George W. Bush: Worst. President. Ever. Yet, even I am saddened by the shame that spectacle brings to the office. Bush loudly disobeyed two central premises of effective government: first, that although it is best to be loved AND feared, fear is better than love; and, that you must unite your allies and divide your enemies. The failed Bush Iraq policy revealed US weakness and provoked deep resentment in the Arab world. As a result, we are neither feared nor loved, while simultaneously we have divided our allies and united our enemies. Throw in wildly incompetent domestic policy and there you have it: Worst. President. Ever. We should all feel bad about it coming to this.

I am very shocked and disappointed in the secret service. This reporter should of been before the second shoe is thrown. At the time you don’t know if it is a shoe or weapon being thrown. The secret service should all be fired. I would want this team guarding Obama. Reminds me of the Reagan incident where he got hit by a bottle at a convention.

Those secret service agent sould be fires ASAP, and maybe they should be given a job taking care of elderlies.

I have never cared for Bush, but I would hate to see anything happen to him while he was President, just because someone does not believe in what he is doing, that is no reason to throw shoes or even hurt him. They said that 6 seconds went by between the two shoes being thrown, although it does not seem like a lot of time, it can be in a life and death shooting spree. This guy could have been first to throw a shoe and then maybe someone else could have pulled a gun, then to watch our Secret Service stand there and do nothing totally surprised me, but then maybe the guys don’t like him.

I have no doubt he the USSS Detail Leader was out to lunch. Six seconds is embarrassing. I can run half the length of a football field in six seconds. In addition, the USSS Detail Leader undoubtedly told the Shift Agents to wait outside the room in the hallway. The poststanders were told to go hide in the janitors closet. Very typical of a PPD site.
