Senate Dems Move to Force Blago to Resign

Following up on calls from President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., for disgraced Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign, the Senate Democratic Leadership is now circulating a letter to the entire caucus.  Their goal is to have all Democrats united behind resignation by close of business.

Though Democrats in Washington and Illinois continue to think that Blagojevich will try to hold on, they are moving to this strategy because they realize that it could take months for impeachment proceedings, or  for special election to be held over Blagojevich’s objections. –George Stephanopoulos UPDATE 6pm: All fifty Senate Democrats, including Sens. Lieberman and Sanders, two Independents who caucus with the Democrats, have signed the letter calling on Blagojevich to resign. What they’re concerned about is either this call for a special election or impeachment proceedings could take several months, and that Senate seat will be vacant for several months. That’s why they are pushing for Blagojevich’s resignation. But, Democrats believe that the Illinois governor is oblivious to these calls.

This is my hope to clean stinking D-closets at 2010. Where is moral issues in East and West Coasts of America ?
Rod Blagojevich and Charles Rangel-(Rep NY, Tax Fraud, my district) have to stem down or be impeached by law.
I believe that main stream medias, CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and NY/LA Times have to take some responsibility for biased reporting against between Gov. Sarah Palin and supporters or groups of Obama: D-Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s fraud, Tony Rezko, ACORN’s fraud, Internet hacker-son of Congress(D-Mississippi), Charles Rangel-(Rep NY, Tax Fraud, my district). The medias covered to report all personal negative things of Sarah Palin every prime times, the other hands, even someone and ACORN group which were embroiled in criminal, fraudulent, illegal supporters of Obama were totally hidden or ignored to report by the medias. I have lived in New York City. Tax fraud D-Rep is Charles Rangel who I voted and now should step down in New York. Now, mainstream medias ! it’s time to tell the truth before special agent of FBI investigate. I’ve been truly expecting for FBI to scrutinize throughly against ACORN-VOTER-FRAUD and Charles Rangel-(D-Rep NY, Tax Fraud) before Obama inaugurate at 1/20/09. Additionally, Nancy Pelosi has to consider for following Democratic to resign.
Tim Mahoney (D-Rep. Fla affair and money laundry), Newsome (D-SF Mayor, affair w/wife of his aid), Tony Villar (D-LA Mayor, divorced as affair)as like the two Govs, Spritzer(D-NY)and Jim McGreevy(D-NJ) had already gone.

jim 234 I smell sour grapes coming from you.

Posted by: Ken | December 10, 2008, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

You have to read the complaint from numbers 106-115. It’s obvious Obama knew it was pay for play by Nov 13 and kept playing after Jarret withdrew her name. There is nothing in the complaint from Nov 14 to Dec 4 at that point. Dec 4 is when Candidate 5 (Jackson)appears.
Where’s the missing 3 weeks, Fitz? I guess those 3 weeks depends on whether Fitz gets to keep his job in the new administration. Change you can’t believe in.

Posted by: Nobel | December 10, 2008, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm

Why is my confidence in Obama’s promises shaken?
Why do I feel such a deep sense of betrayal even though I am not from Illinois?
Why do I start feeling very uncomfortable about the amount of money that the Obama campaign raised and spent?
As an Obama supporter and as one who voted for the Obama/Biden ticket, why am I feeling so sad and so anguished since the news of the criminal charges against the governor broke?
What a sad turn of events!
God help us and our President-Elect.

Since I’m always suspicious of the motives of anything members of Congress do, I wonder why the Democrats are so quick to throw Blagojevich overboard.
Are they hoping he’ll resign, plead guilty and go away quietly before the investigation leads to more skeletons in the Democrats’ closet?

Hey – you don’t need a petition to get this guy to resign – just pay him to resign.

Posted by: Cynical | December 10, 2008, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

Sydney, don’t be sad. This guilt by association crap will pass. Obama distanced himself from Blago when he had inklings that things weren’t as they should be. In fact, if you read the transcripts, Blago hated Obama because Obama was clean and above board. Obama made the right move at the right time. This is just a bump in the road that some will try to make bigger for political gain. The trouble is, we don’t need to be fixing little bumps here and there, we need to be fixing bridges around the world — and Obama will do that.

Apparently CW, you don’t get the meaning of “guilt by association” and why it’s a false proposition, because it essentially means that you happen to know someone who is guilty of something, but that you yourself are not guilty. If guilt by association worked, YOU would be guilty of anything your friends did that was against the law and hauled before a court to prove your innocence. That’s why we have presumption of innocence in this country, friend.

Party and States have nothing to do with it. Let’s see, where is Stevens from? Or the governor who just ran as VP candidate and has some explaining to do to the IRS about her per diem charges, RNC clothes, husband’s tag along expenses. We can go on and on and get nowhere until everyone realizes this isn’t a debate about which one of us is right. It’s about the lack of standards we hold our elected and business leaders to. On Patrick Fitzgerald—-Our friends on the right deftly saw right through this guy years ago………
:::::Rich Lowry::::::
“Fitzgerald let himself become an instrument of political blood lust.”
:::::Newsmax::::::
“Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald is said to be “non-partisan” and “apolitical” – but as U.S. attorney in Chicago, a job he continues to hold as he heads up the Leakgate probe, the targets of his investigations into political corruption have been overwhelmingly Republican.”
:::::Kay Bailey Hutchison:::::
“I think we are seeing grand juries and U.S. attorneys and district attorneys that go for technicalities, sort of a gotcha mentality in this country. :
:::::Bill Kristol::::::
“He is now out to discredit the Bush administration.”
:::::Mark Steyn:::::

So if the current govoner of Texas is corrupt that’s somehow Bush’s fault. You people are so desperate to pin something on Obama, to just be haters, you’re all a bunch of lunatics. The senator from Alaska has been found guilty to being corrupt, is that Sarah Palin’s fault? Of coarse not. Get a life folks. Seriously. Our country is in crises from YOUR president, I REALLY dont want to hear another word from a Republican for at least four more years.

Nobel (3:46): So what! Even if Obama(or members of his staff) had lobbied Blagojevich about who he thought might be the best person to fill his senate seat. There’s nothing wrong with that! And, if he found out about the foul-mouthed slime-balls pay-to-play requierment, he obviously wasn’t willing to ‘play’ (this, based on Blagojevich’s own characterization of Obama on tape—He called him “a mother-f###r” and said, “f##k him”!)and may have even dropped dime on the creep!

Chicago seems to be full of Corrupt WHITE, Theiving politicians!What is the nationality of the whites who live there, maybe it would explain the Endemic corruption..

Blago is a crook and arrogant at that! When Ted Stevens was indicted and later convicted I don’t remember the Republican body demanding he resign. Why not?

Posted by: rickyt1234 | December 10, 2008, 5:35 pm 5:35 pm

“BROWNIE, YOU’RE DOING A HECK OF A JOB! Under Pres. George Bush, Illinois Gov. Blago can get a position with the Arabian Horse Association like “Brownie”, and later try to use it to get a federao appointment i.e. FEMA. Problem is, time is running out. No wonder the Republicans are desparately trying to link Blago’s actions to Obama. Too many people still remember “Brownie” and Bush. One more time, lest your forget: “BROWNIE, YOU’RE DOING A HECK OF A JOB!”

Allegations aside, Blagojevich is kinda hot. He looks like (now deceased) Michael Landon, except with a wider face. I will hold judgment about Blagojevich until he has had his day in court. Meanwhile, I will enjoy the scenery.:)

Obama did not BUY his Senate seat. He beat Alan Keyes by a margin of over 40%.

Posted by: rmbrown0926 | December 10, 2008, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm

Popular opinion aside, the governor is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law – that hasn’t happened yet and we don’t know his side of the story. I think Dems are calling for his resignation a bit prematurely and it makes me think that something just isn’t right. Why aren’t they calling for Charlie Rangle’s resignation just as vehemently? Other prominent officials have been accused of wrong-doing and usually, others allow the process to play out before calling for someone’s resignation. No something is not right.

Sydney from NH why is your confidence shaken about Obama if you had a neighbor you thought was a good neighbor and then you found out that neighbor robbed a bank lets say should we all not have confidence in you by association I think people are judging Obama before he even is the president don’t forget we all at one time have none someone that is above board. I think we all need to be positive about Obama and give him our support when he needs it. I live abroad in Canada and voted for Obama and I see that the American people judge to quickly you want bad politics live in Canada for awhile. EJ originally from Indiana Hoosier state.

Dadgummed federal investigators just keep messing things up for politicians in Chicago. It’s been that way ever since Al Capone let Eliot Ness in there.
No problem, the half of the Chicago politicians not going to prison are going to Washington, and they’ll be able to pardon the other half.

Posted by: ragnar30066 | December 10, 2008, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm

This issue is overblown. No money exchanged hands. Instead of Fitzgerald going after corporate criminals, Mobster, and the guys in washington that led the country to this semi depression, he is pushing a case based on he said she said. This absolutely disagraceful. That is why we are in trouble our law enforcement officials have lost focused and our politicians have lost vision. It is time the people speak up. Senate seats for sale is irrelevant how does that concern the american people who are laid off. Amazing

Posted by: Jennifer | December 10, 2008, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm

Gee. I sort of think that there is a lot of relevance about someone selling Senate seats and think they should be prosecuted irregardless of party affiliation.

It saddens me that some of you are unable to just stick to the facts and issues that are outlined within the article; this story has absolutely nothing to do with Obama this is about a corrupt governor. And as I have discussed this story with several intellects and not one of us took the story in the direction that some of you have here, I will have to surmise that you are a bunch of hicks and haters.

Posted by: Nevertheless | December 10, 2008, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm

Let’s look at reality here for a minute. They have been after this guy for what, four years? Obama and his group were well aware of what was going on. It’s obvious that Obama has nothing to fear here. This guy is just a crook and born from Chicago politics. So was Obama. But, so far, I think he is making some pretty good decisions. He’s not afraid to do anything questionable in his attemps to try and help right this ship.

Come, come, children. Give the Guv a break; I mean, after all, “Vengence is mine sayeth the Lord. I will repay…” Oh, rot! Now I’ve gone and dragged the Deity into it. Which brings up the question: Did Satan get a fair trial before he was thrown into the pit where the fire burneth forever and the worms dieth not? (probably maggots from Chicago.) Ans: He did not. That fact alone should be incentive enough for our pug-ugly lame duck president to pardon him.

I am amazed at how many people are giving BO praise for telling this pathetic gov to resign. Of course BO is going to tell him that NOW!
As I have said earlier, BO has absolutely NO record of standing up to corruption in the streets of chicago or in his senate office.
I can honestly say that if BO made a name for himself by fighting in corruption in Chicago, which there is apparently plenty to go around, my criticism towarads him would be less harsh.
However, BO’s shining star rose by greasing the elbows of chicago’s worst.. ayers, rezko, wright.
All of BO’s followers simply refuse to believe that or simply don’t care.

Nevertheless : Well, I guess you told us! You discussed it with a couple “intellects” and that’s that! Unfortunately your opinion, and the opinions of the other morons you’ve talked this over with, mean nothing. The fact remains, both Obama and Blago are corrupt, both are from the same political system and have both sold political favors to the same people. This particular move by Blago is just the tip of the iceberge, they have a long relationship and the details of it are going to come out.

Posted by: howwouldiknow | December 11, 2008, 10:06 am 10:06 am

Is it a legitamate question to ask how Barry got his senate seat… since apparently it doesn’t appear to be filled in the “traditional way” in IL.
Obviously, barry won it by being elected, but were any of his competitors kept out of the race? Basically, were there any payoffs/favors to get him where he is?
Given barry’s stellar group of friends over the years, I am sure he his FAR removed from any dirty tricks like that.
HA HA!

Of course, it’s all political. Nobody is thinking about the good of the people – it doesn’t effect the people of Illinois to have that Senate seat vacant for several months, it effects the voting power of the Senate – and, with a special election, they might end up with a republican rather then an democrat. Senators and president elect need to respect the people of Illinois and back off. Let a special election be held and let the people chose who gets that seat.

this story is getting boring. the FBI is moving. the President-Elect is not involved. what use are all these conspiracies. the corruption of Blagojevich is sickening. but we have to move on, the President-Elect has to move on. there are so many serious problems—like the economy, Pakistan, health-care and unemployment benefits. ever brain cell thinking about a conspiracy that isn’t there (just like all the other ones weren’t there) is a drain on higher thought, such as what do we do with the economy. Obama seems like he could care less about Blagojevich and is assembling his full team so that he is prepared on day one. what more can the FBI say beyond Obama is not part of the investigation?

I sort of like Blago and the tails he can tell about the Chicago thugs. Now we hear that he was a bookmaker before he was governor. Of course, his being a bookmaker had no consequences when Obama and his gang supported him with money and speeches. I can’t wait for him to spill the beans and put the final touch on his pa;s.
