The Note, 12/05/08: Another Senator Kennedy?

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, filling in for Rick Klein today Reports: The Big Three can’t win for losing and it seems Barney Frank is already fed up with Barack Obama.  But first, an exclusive from The Note. Another Senator Kennedy?  The crazy speculation about Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat may not be so crazy after all.  A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York governor David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy.  It’s not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is:  Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate. A few years ago, the famously private Caroline Kennedy would be the last Kennedy expected to serve in Congress, but of course, she took on a much more high-profile role during the presidential campaign and, if she does it, would be more than New York’s junior Senator; she’d have closer ties to the Obama White House than any of her colleagues, a direct line to the East Wing. When Robert Kennedy, Jr. took himself out of the running for the seat earlier this week, he told Jonathan Hicks of the New York Times, “Caroline Kennedy would be the perfect choice if she would agree to it.”  And one more thing:  We hear that President-elect Obama has made it clear that he thinks Caroline Kennedy would be a great choice.  But Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter tells us, “President-elect Obama has a very high regard for Caroline Kennedy. But, he has not spoken with Governor Paterson or Caroline Kennedy about the race, and has no involvement in this process.” Back to reality as it now exists. Two weeks ago, the CEOs of GM, Ford and Chrysler were chastised for flying into town in corporate jets and sent back to Detroit with a homework assignment.  As Speaker Pelosi said on November 20, “Until they show us the plan, we cannot show them the money.”  Well, this time they arrived in impressive electric and hybrid cars and with detailed plans on how they’d use federal loans to turn their companies around.  Did it work?  Here’s the headline from the Detroit News: “Auto aid deal dicey as Senate skeptics grill GM, Chrysler execs” Dicey indeed.  The clearest sign that the votes are still not there for a Detroit bailout came shortly after the end of the hearing when Democratic leaders sent President Bush a missive saying, basically, you do it. ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports: “Democrats sent a clear message to the White House tonight – make some of the $700 financial industry bailout money available to the domestic auto industry or else. And they want an answer by Friday.  … “In a letter Thursday night, Democratic leaders in the House and Senate told President Bush he must commit funds from either the TARP or the federal reserve or they will be unable to pass anything in Congress. ‘Your decision to utilize the TARP funds, or to work with the Federal Reserve to make available assistance through its existing lending programs, or both, are essential to the Congress’ ability to address this critical economic situation in a timely manner, and would also eliminate the uncertainties inherent in the legislative process,’ say Senate Makority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic committee chairmen in the letter.” The key phrase there:  “uncertainties in the legislative process.” While Democrats leaders prod the outgoing president, they are also complaining about the lack of hands-in involvement by the incoming president on the auto bailout issue.  Until now, it’s been private gumbling, but no more.  Barney Frank, it seems, has had enough with President-elect Obama’s oft-stated “one president at a time” rift.  AP’s David Espo:  "He’s going to have to be more assertive than he’s been," Frank said of the president-elect. "At a time of great crisis with mortgage foreclosures and autos, he says we only have one president at a time. I’m afraid that overstates the number of presidents we have. He’s got to remedy that situation." Will this help Mark Penn?   Today Team Obama will send out an email to 3 million of their best friends asking to help Hillary Clinton pay off her campaign debt.  The brilliant Beth Fouhy of AP has the details:  “At the beginning of November, Clinton owed $7.5 million to vendors from her failed presidential bid, campaign finance records showed. The largest share of the debt – about $5.3 million – is owed to the polling firm of Mark Penn, the Clintons’ longtime political strategist. She owes hundreds of thousands of dollars for printing, equipment rental, phone banks and other services. “Clinton has slowly been trimming the debt since suspending her campaign last June, partly with Obama’s help. But her fundraising efforts will be curtailed if she is confirmed as secretary of state and becomes covered by the Hatch Act, which regulates political involvement by federal employees. And if Obama’s help is not enough, there’s always Ugly Betty. The star of ABC’s "Ugly Betty" has agreed to help Hillary Clinton retire her campaign debt before a federal law prevents Barack Obama’s choice for Secretary of State from being personally involved in raising funds. Clinton’s presidential campaign committee sent an e-mail to supporters on Thursday, inviting them to participate in a conversation with the former first lady in New York City on Monday, Dec. 15, which will feature special guest Bill Clinton and will be hosted by America Ferrera, the "Ugly Betty" star who first announced her support for Clinton in January 2008 and campaigned for her in Nevada and Pennsylvania. The purpose of the event, which is scheduled to take place at Manhattan Center Studios, is to help the former first lady retire her sizable campaign debt. Charles Krauthammer is right that the landmark agreements ratified by Iraq yesterday should not go unNoted: “The barbarism in Mumbai and the economic crisis at home have largely overshadowed an otherwise singular event: the ratification of military and strategic cooperation agreements between Iraq and the United States. "They must not pass unnoted. They were certainly noted by Iran, which fought fiercely to undermine the agreements. Tehran understood how a formal U.S.-Iraqi alliance endorsed by a broad Iraqi consensus expressed in a freely elected parliament changes the strategic balance in the region. "For the United States, this represents the single most important geopolitical advance in the region since Henry Kissinger turned Egypt from a Soviet client into an American ally. If we don’t blow it with too hasty a withdrawal from Iraq, we will have turned a chronically destabilizing enemy state at the epicenter of the Arab Middle East into an ally. "Also largely overlooked at home was the sheer wonder of the procedure that produced Iraq’s consent: classic legislative maneuvering with no more than a tussle or two — tame by international standards (see YouTube: "Best Taiwanese Parliament Fights of All Time!") — over the most fundamental issues of national identity and direction." Jeb Bush’s friends tell TIMEs Tim Padgett that he’ll likely make a decision in January on whether to run for Senate.  Padgett finds several good reasons for a Jeb candidacy, including the obvious one:   ”Jeb Bush is, without a doubt, one of the smartest politicians the beleaguered Republican Party has at its disposal today. “Which is why the possibility of his running for Martinez’s seat probably shouldn’t be such a surprise after all. When a party, to quote Jeb’s former-President father, is in the kind of deep doo-doo the GOP stepped into on Nov. 4, it can’t afford to let one of its top talents spend any more time taking it easy in Miami.” More:  “The timing is convenient for Bush as well. If he’s now willing to consider a Senate run, then it’s fair to assume he’s also now open to a presidential bid, either in 2012 or 2016, when the Senate term would end.”    Another President Bush? The President-elect’s first scandal:  Zunegate.    The Washington Times picks up on a story quietly broken by Philadelphia’s City Paper: “President-elect Barack Obama is embroiled in his first mini-scandal – one that techies have dubbed Zunegate. “While Obama insists he loves his iPod music player, he was spotted recently at a Philadelphia gym with the Zune competitor. "I’ve seen a Zune in action. I know what it looks like," said Neal Santos, a reporter at the gym who surmised that Obama’s Zune may have been borrowed. “An Obama spokesman said yesterday the incoming prez is an iPod user.” Quick:  What’s the one thing Phil Singer and Brent Bozell agree on?  Chris Matthews should be off the air.  And that’s today’s abbreviated version of The Note.  Rick Klein, after a much-deserved day off, will be back on Monday. Kicker "I think she has great instincts. She’s not a genius, but she has very good political instincts."- PA Governor Ed Rendell in more open-mike comments caught by the eagle-eared Jake Tapper.

OMG that whirring sound you hear is JAckie spinning in her grave. Senator Caroline Kennedy. Hmmm.

Posted by: Jenny Rome Ga | December 5, 2008, 8:26 am 8:26 am

The US Government has gone insane.
Giving Carolyn Kennedy the Senate seat because she is a kennedy and help in vetting VP’s.
I am sure NY has many Qualified people who can do the job, ran for the position and can serve the state.
Handing out money to the Big Banks and Brokers who are international companies. Compared to helping out the auto makers who have so many americans employed and will help keep so many other jobs for americans should not be questioned. Especially since they asked for a loan, not a bail out.
Hillary let the people down, when she bowed out to Obama. After she said she was for the people. *shrugs* Now we have two in their not for the people. Obama and her.
The American people do not care what Obama listens to or on what.
We care that he made Promises he had no intention of keeping. Since he knew what the economy was like when he made them. He knew he was not going to keep them. Now, he starts with the speeches, excuses and trying to convince the American People he is not a liar, and it is all someone else fault. More the same His blame game.
Mr Obama gave up his senate seat, He has no offical position in the Government right now. He should have no votes or hands on with the auto loans.
Chris Matthews off the air why? for not sucking up to Obama or the Chicago-DNC?
God Bless America we need it bad.

Is she a NY resident? Oh that’s right, you just need to buy a house there before you become the Senator.

Posted by: LongT | December 5, 2008, 8:52 am 8:52 am

LongT – Actually Caroline moved to New York afer her fathers murder. Her family has many homes all over the world but I believe Caroline lives in New York. She certainly has spent more time there than HRC.

Posted by: Jenny Rome Ga | December 5, 2008, 9:00 am 9:00 am

Seah, you’re such a grump. And, just FYI – there are certainly SOME American people who voted for Obama and think he will be one of the best presidents we’ve ever had. Obviously you’re not one of them but who cares…take a vacation, or a chill pill, or something. We’re all gonna be ok.

Posted by: counting crows | December 5, 2008, 9:04 am 9:04 am

This is fantastic news! Please consider this, Caroline. There are a lot of us who have confidence in both your abilities and your desire to make the US a better country.

Another Kennedy in office? Who wants her and who cares?

Posted by: Mihan | December 5, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am

to all the morons
-yes Caroline Kennedy is a lifelong resident of NY
- did you read the article or watch the television for the past year…she has the ear of the President more than any other would be Senator …no matter what lovcal state politicians have worked their way up through local state government…
Caroline Kennedy would be a HUGE gift to the state of NY under an Obama Presidency.
- she has credibility, honor lifelong understanding of the issues… and no owed favors to ANYONE
morons who don’t think before they type…
most states would be thrilled to have her carpet bag to theirs…
but in this case she happens to be a native.
think people…atleast before you hit send.

“ABC News has Caroline Kennedy could fill Senator Clinton’s seat.” Huh? Is there a grammar check button?

Posted by: TSnow27604 | December 5, 2008, 9:23 am 9:23 am

She is smart enough to fill the senate seat but i don’t think there is a huge need for another woman senator. There are already 14+ and 8 governers currently serving this country. I say give it to who is qualified and who is willing to make a difference. My personal preference would be to see a black or latino fill the spot. I think obama was like the only the 3rd black senator in our nations history. Not sure if there ever was a hispanic.

Posted by: ronald mexico | December 5, 2008, 9:27 am 9:27 am

With Caroline in office we will be getting a smart Kennedy not the usual Ultra-Leftist Liberal type we normally get from that Family.I for one was sick of Obama long before now and Frank has made everyone sick for far to long.Frank needs to GO AWAY and stay there. He and Obama helped start this Economic mess we are in today but no one will say so because they wanted Obama in office and are now getting wath theyt deserve.GOD will help those of us who did not vote Obama in.

Posted by: Jesse Tomblin | December 5, 2008, 9:28 am 9:28 am

Jesse – Excellant point. The Senate would be getting another Kennedy and all the stuff that goes along with that. We would also be getting Jackie’s daughter. A girl raised at arms length fromt he rest of the clan. She would probably be the first Kennedy to serve in the Senate or House who has not been to rehab since Bobby back in 1968. I think she would be great, if she wants it.

Posted by: Jenny Rome Ga | December 5, 2008, 9:45 am 9:45 am

You go girl! I think she would be fantastic!!!!

Posted by: Barb | December 5, 2008, 9:53 am 9:53 am

Jesse Tomblin,
How did Obama and Frank start the economic mess?

Posted by: Bethie | December 5, 2008, 9:53 am 9:53 am

Oh, God, the Clintons and Kennedys are going to run this country!!!!! Lord help us!

Posted by: jill | December 5, 2008, 9:54 am 9:54 am

She does live in NY… I work here and saw her just the other day during lunch walking around.

Posted by: fjakl | December 5, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

Jill you mean the Bushes and the Chenys dont’ you????

Posted by: Barb | December 5, 2008, 10:03 am 10:03 am

“Ronald Mexico” give me a break. Give the seat to a black or latino/a? As if Caroline is not qualified – as if we don’t need MORE women in Congress! Go back to school (if you ever attended). I support Caroline Kennedy big time.

Posted by: American | December 5, 2008, 10:05 am 10:05 am

Sure why not………..
She’s as qualified for that job just as much as Obama was qualified for his.

Posted by: perceptions | December 5, 2008, 10:05 am 10:05 am

I’m not sure what makes her unqualified? It’s not like she doesn’t understand how our government works. Her dad was President and uncle was senator. Why couldn’t she do this job? Nay sayers are just bitter sore losers.

Posted by: JJ | December 5, 2008, 10:09 am 10:09 am

LongT: Caroline Kennedy is a New York resident. She’s lived in New York most of her life.
Seah: Why wouldn’t she be as qualified for the job as any other New Yorker?

Posted by: Kitty Wilberforce | December 5, 2008, 10:24 am 10:24 am

ronald mexic: “i don’t think there is a huge need for another woman senator. There are already 14+ and 8 governers currently serving this country…” By your reckoningthat means there are 36 male senators and 42 male governors so I don’t think there is a huge need for another male senator. I’ve got an idea, the governor should appoint a transgender!

Posted by: Kitty Wilberforce | December 5, 2008, 10:28 am 10:28 am

I hope she does run for the Senate seat. I know that JFK Jr, was wanting to run for the seat that Hillary won, but bowed out when he found out that Hillary was running for it in 1999, just before his death.
I think Caroline would make a great Senator – her family’s history of civil service is outstanding!!

Another example of the class warfare that’s just starting.

Posted by: jack0548 | December 5, 2008, 11:19 am 11:19 am

Her qualifications other than being a Kennedy are? Can this family please go quietly into the night? YOu might as well ask me to represent New Yorkers: I am not a resident of NY (either was Hillary), no baggage of scandalous family history, I am a true outsider (CHANGE!!!!)and I happen to believe in the limits of government as CLEARLY spelled out in black and white in the US Constitution.

Posted by: stop2think | December 5, 2008, 11:24 am 11:24 am

Senator Caroline Kennedy – Yes, yes, and yes again. I am an 83 year old grandmother who lives in New York with her grandson (had a home place in Virginia until last year when I had to finally sell and give up to old age and being a widow). I have watched this woman closely over the years and even more so in New York and heaven knows she’s far more qualified than the nit-wits on the political payrolls in the State whose names are being tossed out. Consider it Caroline – a very difficult decision and certainly troubles and work you don’t have to take on, but if you decide to do it, it certainly means you’ll give it your all. Bless our country.

Posted by: OnTheGloryRoad | December 5, 2008, 11:26 am 11:26 am

Oh no! here we go. NYorkers will vote her in and we will have another lifer in congress again who will be one side minded.

Posted by: Jim Rod | December 5, 2008, 11:29 am 11:29 am

Senator Caroline Kennedy? What are her qualifications, except being the daughter of a President as a child? She’ll probably last two years, to be replaced by future Senator Rudy Giuliani.
Oh, by the way, in the “kicker” quote, nobody mentioned that Gov. Rendell was talking about Gov. Sarah Palin. Rendell is right–Sarah Palin is smarter than media types think. But then the media thought that Ronald Reagan was stupid, but Reagan outsmarted them every time.

Posted by: Steve Z | December 5, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am

I can only hope she gets shot, or her plane crashes OR she can get a tumor in her brain a like old Slob faced drunk pervert Ted! We don’t need more Kennedy’s, Clinton’s, or Bushes! The idiots of New York will elect any empty headed female who comes to their state just like they did that criminal scum bag Hillary.

The best thing to do would probably be disband the government as it exists, appoint Obama King of America and go back to a nice old-fashioned monarchy.

My elderly aunt is a Roosevelt democrat, and by default thinks the Kennedys are some sort of deity. She said at the time of his death John Jr was the best of the Kennedys and I agreed. I told her that’s because his Mama kept him away from the rest of them. She didnt like that but it’s true.

Caroline Kennedy has lived in New York City since she was six years old. She went to school (and I believe college) in New York. Her summer home is in New York. She has worked for the New York City school system, steering private grants to special programs, for several years. She’s well-known as a very bright, very serious woman, who has for years refused to rule out running for office when her children are grown.
It’s very striking that the haters rarely trouble to get their facts (or their spelling) right. Just spit it out there. Who cares if it’s true? Who cares if it confuses or hurts people? It feels good, and that’s all that matters.

Posted by: Follitics | December 5, 2008, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

Caroline Kennedy & Ellen Alderman wrote a couple of books on the Bill of Rights a few years back. Given the assault on the Bill & the constitution in general by the present administration, either one would be a great Senator. I think Kennedy has the higher name recognition & access to backing, though.

Posted by: Ray Waldren | December 5, 2008, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

GACK! Once again the professional politicians prove that it’s not what you know, or even who you know, but what your name is. Is this the Senate or some exclusive Manhatten nightclub with a preferred guest list? In a state with tens of millions of people is Kennedy (is she even a resident or has she served in elective public office?) the BEST the governor could come up with, or is he trying to curry favor with certain connections? 2008 will go down as the year of public image in political annals.

Actually, this is pretty awseome. If the Dems appoint Caroline Kennedy SCHLOSSBERG to the Senate, Sarah Palin’s credibility instantly skyrockets! From then on, anytime a liberal or a media type (yes, I know that’s redundant) mock Sarah’s qualifications, intelligence, or any other quality, the other side can simply point to Caroline and say, “Yeah, well, let’s talk about Caroline.” I mean, let’s face it…if you’ve ever heard Caroline Kennedy SCHOLSSBERG speak (without a script), then you know she’s not a very bright woman. And if we’re being totally honest she’s really that attractive, either. So wouldn’t it be perfectly delicious if the Dems unconsciously replaced Sarah Palin as the next national laughingstock with the last surviving member of JFK’s family??? So go ahead, set her up in the crosshairs…it’ll be great fun seeing Caroline collapse under 10 times the amount of abuse that a significantly more accomplished, self-made woman had to endure. The new poster child for unqualified, incompetence? Why, Sen. Caroline K. SCHLOSSBERG, of course!

The governor’s task is to choose the most effective person he can, and there are a lot of reasons Caroline Kennedy would be especially effective — even more so if Hillary acclaims her selection.
Caroline has been involved in community work and education issues for years. She is a reserved and careful Kennedy, not a firebrand, but still, she would be listened to more closely than most.

Posted by: Lawrence Walker | December 5, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

Posted by: Greg | December 5, 2008, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

Among her many OTHER qualifications, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg (so it would be Sen. Schlossberg, I’d think) has devoted enormous time and energy to bettering the public school system, something that is going to be the focus of much attention in the new administration — She is a lawyer who has written on Constitutional issues — and she probably knows more about courage and leadership than most of us because of her family and as a result of heading the Kennedy Institute with its Profiles in Courage award. And she speaks intelligently, carefully and meaningfully, by the way. As a New Yorker, I would be honored and very, very proud if she became our Senator.

oh Reba, go to the library, check out Carolines books, she’s written quite a few. She is a brilliant scholar and excellent thinker. She has worked, although I don’t believe for a paycheck, but google her work with NY schools. She can get things done in an effective mannre without causing a fuss
and John, you should have your brain boiled in oil for comparing Palins intelligence to Carolines…I mean really, seriously twisted.

John Gettery: Actually, this is pretty awseome. If the Dems appoint Caroline Kennedy SCHLOSSBERG to the Senate, Sarah Palin’s credibility instantly skyrockets! From then on, anytime a liberal or a media type (yes, I know that’s redundant) mock Sarah’s qualifications, intelligence, or any other quality, the other side can simply point to Caroline and say, “Yeah, well, let’s talk about Caroline.”
Yes, let’s talk about Caroline who has a law degree from Columbia University (a top 5 law school) and an undergraduate degree from Harvard. I can only assume she managed to earn these degrees in the prescribed number of years, unlike your pal Palin. There is absolutely no comparison between Palin and Caroline Kennedy in terms of education or intelligence. Perhaps one could make an argument that Caroline Kennedy lacks experience and that would be the only proper comparison between the two, but even that argument won’t overcome Sarah Palin’s stunning lack of ignorance about the Constitution, Bill of Rights, world issues, and the economic meltdown we’re all facing at the moment. I am really troubled by Americans that find it acceptable to have someone in office who mangles basic concepts, such as the Vice President’s role in our constitutional scheme or whether the 1st Amendment protects their right to be free from criticism. We’re partly in the mess we’re in b/c of incompetence (not just Bush’s, by the way), greed (that’s a big factor), and ignorance. To paraphrase John Adams, a democracy can’t survive if people aren’t educated (and I will add, thoughtful about issues). Before you post idiotic comparisons between Sarah Palin and a woman with more education and demonstrated thoughtfulness about issues (see her books on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, things Ms Palin has shown she knows little about & that I’m willing to bet you know little about), you might consider that whether you’re actually comparing apples to apples or apples to kiwis. Just a thought….but I guess you and your ilk do little thinking (preferring to spend your time in knee-jerk reactivity to Fox News).

She also represented her family at the dedication of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park in Little Rock, Arkansas in November 2004.

Since Bill Clinton doen’t want it how about giving it Chelsea Clinton? She is smart, inteligent, policy oriented and well schooled by mom and dad. She has name recognition and politics is in her DNA too. Plus we know she is a good and disiplined(unlike dad) campaigner too. I know James Carvelle and Paul Begala are willing to skip retirement to help any Clinton. So James and Paolo lets Go!

LOL! I agree with one of the commenter’s above that doing this would take a tremendous amount of focus off of Sara Palin and put it onto this truly “unknown” personality. If you want to criticize one side for putting forward a supposedly unqualified woman for purposes other than the common good then you have to be prepared to criticize the other side just as forcefully. It’s only fair. However, I do think it will be a shame to watch what appears to be a nice enough person torn down by baseless charges and endless inquiries into her past associations and activities, which will surely follow. But if the Left hadn’t gotten so much glee out of accusing Sara Palin of not actually being her own child’s mother, calling her names generally and making fun of her and the rest of her family, then Ms. Kennedy would probably have a much smooter ride should she be offered and choose to accept this appointment. Unfortunately, the Right is just savlivating at the chance to kick a good woman around for no other reason than to get some payback. Sara Palin was/is a good woman and she got pounded. Whether she deserves it or not, Caroline Kennedy should expect nothing short of the same. Whether she’s able to remain standing when the dust settles like Sara did remains to be seen. Given her family’s long-standing mystique and her own well-known efforts to keep herself and her own family out of the public eye, by stepping into the public arena in this way I personally don’t think she has anywhere to go but down. (Not to mention starting by making an enemy-for-life out of Andrew Cuomo, who is the only logical choice to fill Hill’s seat). Pass the popcorn, this is going to be a good show!!!

EJ,
“BUSH has caused the economic crisis and the republicans that have been in the senate for the last 6 years and Bush for the last eight years. OBAMA isn’t the president yet and has no authority yet until BUSH is out. YOU NEED TO PUT THE BLAME WERE IT BELONGS with the REPUBLICANS. You are definately a person with blinders on and sees only what they want to see or hear.”
While I would never accuse you of wearing blinders, it is certain that you are not well versed in recent political history. The sub-prime mortgage crisis was the “trigger event” that set the rest of the U.S. financial system falling like so many dominos. How did the sub-prime become as big as it did, or even exist at all? Let’s take a look.
After William J. Clinton took office and became “the first black President” he and Congress made affordable housing for underserved minorities a priority. These “underserved” minorities were people who could not qualify for any type of traditional mortgage loan, but Bill C and company wanted them be able to buy their own private housing. As a result, laws were modified to allow lending to those who were otherwise deemed unacceptable credit risks. Lenders, quite astutely as it turned out, presumed this to mean that the government was going to be the backer of last resort for these incredibly risky, adjustable-rate loans. Thus, with the help of the feds, lenders began to push these loans and when the rates began to go up and these high-risk folks could no longer handle their escalating mortgages, the foreclosures started; so many that it hurt not only those foreclosed upon, but the lenders as well. The dominos started to fall.
Since local banks have always invested in larger banks, and those banks in the larger investment houses, the rapid losses caused red ink to flow by a river. The failure of one major institution followed another, and our economy tanked in a remarkably short time.
Why didn’t anyone see this coming? Wasn’t it obvious that lending money to people who had no ability to repay it over time was not only risky, but was in fact a guaranteed path straight to ruin? Well … yes, it was. There were those who hit the alarm from the very first, and one of those in the van was Senator John McCain. He, and others without “blinders” fought the legislation and continued to sound alarms over the years, alarms that no one would heed. And so, the house of cards that Bill C and his Democratic cohorts built came tumbling down and the only solution anyone could see was a massive expenditure of my money, and yours, in a bailout that no one is sure is going to work.
So indeed, let’s DO put the blame for our current mess where it should be, but that is not on GeeDub or his party. No matter how you feel about the man, he and his people are no more responsible for our current financial mess than you are responsible for The Great Flood; you can’t be held responsible for the outcome of things that happened before you were in a position to do anything about them.
P.S. For the record, I have been a registered Democrat for the last two decades. There are things we can legitimately place at Bush’s feet, but we lose credibility when we start flining around accusations that are blatantly false.

So she attended several funerals, huh? Wow! Now THAT’S what I call qualified! And she even went to Law School and had to take the Bar Exam. How many lawyers do you know who are also idiots? I know several. And if passing the Bar was such a great indicator of intelligence, her own brother couldn’t pass it after 3 tries. Face it…both of JFK’s kids got their mother’s brains.

“she’d [Caroline Kennedy] have closer ties to the Obama White House than any of her colleagues, a direct line to the East Wing.”
Senator Claire McCaskill might beg to differ with this statement. Both Caroline and Claire are close Obama allies and both worked on his campaign, but Claire was his numero uno surrogate and advocate. Caroline Kennedy might have equal access to the Obama White House as Claire McCaskill, but not *more* so.

I look at all the posts here and I’m appalled at the denigrating remarks of some of the posters. Caroline Kennedy, as has been pointed out here, is a long time resident of New York. So the remarks about her being a carpetbagger are in error as with the fact that some have called her an airhead. You just wish you were as smart as this woman. I say if they offer it to her, then by all means accept. The Kennedy’s have done more good for this country in the last 50 years than all other Presidents combined. Even with all the baggage that came with them. Time to think before you speak people, your ignorance is showing, along with your arrogance.

Caroline Kennedy would be an OUTSTANDING choice. She’s extremely intelligent, well educated, her philanthropic endeavors have had involved in any number of the issues that face America today. She’s a clear leader with calm confidence and she’s going to get attention for any issue she supports. She’s beholding to no special interest and no other politician. She’s a win/win choice. And hey-if New York’s governor isn’t smart enough to put her in Hillary’s old job-send her to KS. We’ll GLADLY kick out Brownback or Roberts for her!

A moron like George Bush got his republican nomination and presidency just because he is son of an ex-president. Caroline is way better suited for the senator’s position from those standards.

I makes me sick, those old looser senators; all they have is wealth in a job designed to save them from expenses. Joe Biden got replaced by a transition figure, denying the qualified candidate to be sentor. Biden’s ploy to open for his son as senator in two years.
Now Kennedy shall secure for the next generation using Hillary Clinton’s senate seat.

I think it is only natural that Caroline take the seat. This is an administration “by the people for the people”. With Obama at the helm, and a wise team with him, including Caroline, I think we can really see some social changes much needed now. I remember when her dad won, it was termed the Age of Camelot(although I was not old enough to remember it then), and I have myself said that Obama’s run could usher in a new Age of Camelot. Seems right that she should be a part of it. Ted and the majority of us would be proud to have her serve in this manner. I am sure she would do well “for the people” and hope she does seriously consider it, and takes it.

So this is why Clinton was offered the SOS job, so that the way would be clear for Caroline Kennedy to be appointed (always a good way to get ones foot in the door) to fill the vacated Senate seat. I had a gut feeling that Clinton would come to regret her decision to accept the SOS position. Maybe she had no choice. She certainly looked grim when she appeared with BHO on Monday. She looked like someone had died. Well, something had just died. Her Senate career. I think she was forced into accepting the SOS position to make way for Caroline, one of the powers behind BHO.

Posted by: Oonogil | December 5, 2008, 11:06 pm 11:06 pm

Walker Evans – Why do you only tell part of the story on our economic problems? Here is a balanced approach of what happened. Clinton and the republican Congress kept our budget under control. As you said, they made some mistakes encouraging financial institutions to lower the requirements for a home, but the budget was under control. However, Bush who did not veto anything the first five years and a republican controlled Congress for the first six years did nothing about changing this. Therefore, they didn’t think it was that big of problem or they were incompetent. Second, Bush and this republican Congress ran up the biggest debt in the history of this country. That had a major impact on our economy. So it was caused by both repubs and dems. Since repubs had total control the most recent, I put 55% of blame on them and 45% on dems. Finally, you blame the problem on “underserved minorities who could not qualify for any type of traditional mortgage loan.” How did you determine they were underserved minorities? It wasn’t minorities or the poor that caused this problem. All groups of all income levels were purchasing homes they could not afford in the long run. Even Ed McMann was going bankrupt because he and many others thought the price of homes would increase forever.
Financial institutions were to blame also because many made bad loans to get the money up front and then put these mortgages into investment funds so they could get rid of them. Eventually, there were so many of these bad mortgages spread across lots of funds, that all major financial institutions got stuck with them. So there is plenty of blame to go around. Blaming it on the dems 8-16 years ago for letting undeserved minorities buy a home is a major distortion of what really happened.

Why are so many people casting stones with so little knowledge? There are quite a few on here that know that Caroline and/or Obama are going to be incompetent before they even take office. Do they think this is what our founding fathers were hoping for, a country of whiners when their candidate loses? I think they were hoping for a lot more from people that are the most fortunate people on this planet. However, this happens every four years not matter which party wins. No one wants to give another group a chance to succeed in running the government. I am not a republican or a democrat, I am an American that is tired of these lies and bitter attitudes that come from both parties and independents. Let’s start holding both parties responsible for their decisions and work together to keep this nation great.

“I think she [Hillary] was forced into accepting the SOS position to make way for Caroline, one of the powers behind BHO.”
Do you realize how much of an idiot you sound like? You sound like one of those PUMAs that think Obama forced Hillary to take SoS as part of some nefarious plot. You really must not have much respect for Hillary if you think anyone can force her to do anything.
As for the freepers and PUMAs comparing Caroline Kennedy with Palin (what a joke), Palin was running to be one 72-year old heartbeat away from the Presidency. Kennedy would only be one of 100 senators, so the threshold is much lower (there are complete morons in the Senate; then again, the last 8 years we had a complete moron in the Presidency).
Having said that Caroline’s threshold for Senate is lower than Palin’s VP threshold, Caroline blows Palin away, period. Palin had to go to five colleges to finally get a sports journalism degree. She’s only been governor of a small population state for less than two years. She demonstrated to the world her complete lack of knowledge and lack of intellectual curiosity. She lowered herself to using her femine wiles to get through a debate, with all the flirting and winking and folksiness (but the public saw through that BS even if the pundits intially did not (or refused to)). Palin is a joke.

Don’t fall for the comments that talk about how great Caroline will be. They are from a bunch of republicans pretending to be democrats in an attempt to embarras us. We are the party that elected Obama! We are not going to go ten steps backward and put Caroline in the senate! If she wants it she can run for it since she has no qualifications other than her last name (let the people decide). As for her other so called qualifications she didn’t earn anything as far as I am concerned. She would have gone to Harvard even if she is the biggest moron in the planet (I am not saying she is). Bushy Jr. went to Yale and Harvard. He must be one brilliant guy :) JFK was a great president. But we are not like republicans who reward someone just for their family name. Looks like Jeb Bushy is going to be the next Jr. Senator from FL. Bushies must be happy that their party is full of it just like themselves.

Can any of you tell me why it is that Republicans/Hillary clingers can only use hate filled rhetoric and small minded name-calling to get their points across? Are they truly as ignorant and uneducated as they sound, or are they simply and totally powerless to find common ground and adjust to the realities of the ballot box. The American people chose who they wanted as president on November 4.
Democrats (yes, I’m one of them) had to live with George W. Bush for eight years. We were certainly not happy with that choice, but I have never read the kind of evil-wishing, ugliness and name-calling of the kind I have read in this blog toward Caroline from Democrats toward even George W. Bush who put us into a needless war killing thousands of our young men and women and countless Iraqis, did his best to destroy our Constitution and the civil rights of the American people, broke countless national and international laws, stole from the poor and middle class to give to the rich… I could go on and on.
Caroline Kennedy loves this country and she and her family have given so much to it regardless of whether you agree with their politics or not. She is highly intelligent and politically astute. She and her family have lived in New York metropolitan area, and given much of themselves to the area and to the country.
Those of you who spew your hatred like vomit all over the place… why don’t you get counseling? It would make this a cleaner place (or blog).
And to The Note: don’t you have any limits at all on the type of messages you allow on here (e.g. “I can only hope she gets shot, or her plane crashes OR she can get a tumor in her brain a like old Slob faced drunk pervert Ted! We don’t need more Kennedy’s, Clinton’s, or Bushes! The idiots of New York will elect any empty headed female who comes to their state just like they did that criminal scum bag Hillary”)
It was shocking enough that “badboy” would say this, but much more shocking is that your blog would let it go through! (“BadBoy” should really change his moniker to “SickBoy.”)

It’s impressive and depressing to observe the dumb@ss spin that some contributors to this thread put on the Senator Caroline Kennedy speculation. There are just too many morons so steamed up by the possibility of “another Kennedy” that they ignore simple facts: she’s a longtime NY resident; she’s an involved public citizen who has in no way played the “look at me” game; her qualifications may not include a term as mayor of Wasilla, but she’s smart enough to have help the incoming President make a responsible VP choice (the Republican vetters certainly know a nice piece of @$$ when they see one, don’t they. What a great way to get Hillary Clinton out of politics. Put her up for Secretary of State, put Caroline Kennedy in her old senate seat, fire Hillary at the end of her first year. Voila, Clintons out of political power. Why would anyone want to continue the Kennedy political dynasty? How about some fresh faces and new ideas? Come on New Yorkers, don’t you have any other qualified candidates? Stop living in the past and start looking to the future.

Just great, thats all we need …another GD Kennedy in the Senate.

They say that perception is reality, and the fact that many here and on some other sites already perceive Caroline Kennedy to be a dim, unqualified, coddled aristocrat essentially means that the die has been cast. It wasn’t fair when they did it to Sarah Palin and it won’t be fair to do it to Caroline Kennedy but that really doesn’t matter. What matters is that the narrative is being written even before any decision has been made. Right now it looks like the Democrats are setting Caroline Kennedy up to replace Sarah Palin as the next national joke. If I were her I’d say, “thanks but no thanks.”

Governor(Excutive), two States Senators(Legislative), Prosecutor(Judicial) in NY State all belong to Democratic Party. They should take some responsibility for not prevention of collapse of Wall St.. Hey, New Yoker ! Do you think sharfully about Hillary Cliton has done good job or dedicated for NYker or NY States which can controll a world economic in Wall St. ??? Cliton has kept on her first priority, being president. Now her priority is to pay debts, $7.5Mil off before taking the position. I voted for Spitzer because he strongly mentioned about reform of Wall St. while his campaign. However, he disgraced with sex scandal. Now, I request as a tax payer in NY resident Governor,Paterson should select the position who is pundits of economic, bountiful experience and ready to dedicate for NYker, not being president. At least, two NY senators are available to submmit
the Bill that way to spawn a strong regulations of Wall St. to Congress.
NO INEXPERIENCE SENATOR for NYKER.

Badboy said: “I can only hope she gets shot, or her plane crashes OR she can get a tumor in her brain a like old Slob faced drunk pervert Ted! We don’t need more Kennedy’s, Clinton’s, or Bushes! The idiots of New York will elect any empty headed female who comes to their state just like they did that criminal scum bag Hillary.”———Badboy, you are shameless! Please show a little class. No one is going to read your long tirades.

I think she’d make a great Senator! Too bad the Republicons don’t want to see that, but it is not THEIR choice. They hate everybody and wouldn’t like any Democrat in that seat. You go for it, Ms. Kennedy! Your family has done only great things for this country, and I believe you will too.

Posted by: Barbara | December 6, 2008, 12:45 pm 12:45 pm

This is an insult to New Yorkers!!!!
Remember Caroline supported Obama because her “kids wanted her to” ????
How politically astute is that!!!!
And the latest fashion among Congressional bureaucrats? FAMILY dynasties!! Joe Biden has a place holder (Kaufman) for his son Beau…yes, the totally ineffective AG of Delaware!
Then there is another Bush on the horizon! Such insult after injury!
ENOUGH you goons! Time for another Boston Tea Party, this time on the banks of the POTOMAC!

Contrary to what the Bush, Kennedy, and Clintons would like us to believe, the U.S. is not a monarchy. In reviewing the records of all of the above, especially Ted Kennedy, these people should go down in history as our greatest shame; yet, we appear to be the only country that rewards failure and penalizes success. Sharing the last family name of any of the above would drive most moral, ethical, and patriotic people further underground Vs laying claim to a public office. I count Cuomo among those who should enjoin with the above, all who should extinguish their insatiable desire for the limelight.

Senator Ted Kennedy got away with murder and recently stopped a wind generation project because he thought it ruined his view. What elitist influence does this Senator Kenney expect?

Caroline Kennedy = Sara Palin with a trust fund.

Posted by: blutobluto | December 6, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

Caroline is a New Yorker born and bred like her mother. She was born at New York Hospital.
We don’t know her politics. Is she liberal or more moderate like her father?
Being from a political family she probably knows much more than the average person about how the system works. Understatement.
You can’t lump all the Kennedys in together. You can’t compare Caroline and John to Ethel’s untamed bunch. Jackie did a good job of raising them.
She’s smart but she doesn’t have the outgoing personality that her brother had.
Unlike RFK, Jr (who wasn’t really being considered) she has a clean background and isn’t controversial.
I think she’d do a good job.

Posted by: Not a New Yorker | December 6, 2008, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

Just because Caroline Kennedy has some law degrees does not qualify her to be a Senator. The only reason why she is being considered is because of her last name. Honestly, can you see someone else suggesting Chelsea Clinton for a Senate seat? I thought not.

Posted by: Kathleen | December 6, 2008, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm

Caroline Kennedy will make a wonderful senator! The Kennedy family commitment of service to this country should continue. She is a great person, well educated, well grounded, and well spoken. Go Caroline!

well now we know what Obama meant by ‘change’ ..one washes the baby but then puts the soiled diaper back on it…took a harvard grad to explain it all to we peasants…

Posted by: Nino Baldino | December 6, 2008, 9:12 pm 9:12 pm

What qualifies her other than family? Is this more of the CHANGE America voted for?

Posted by: zeke | December 6, 2008, 11:23 pm 11:23 pm

Wait a min, the Govenure, who no one in NY voted for, is appointing a person who has no contacts in politics except that she is the daughter of a former President? Well I guess that is like voting in some one who just moves to NY because she knew that the people of NY were dumb enough to vote her in.

Posted by: golddragon214 | December 6, 2008, 11:57 pm 11:57 pm

I actually like Caroline Kennedy and it would be interesting to see her in the Senate. But listening to the left spilling over with joy does make me believe more and more about the whole “elistist” argument I keep hearing. I didn’t care for Palin’s politics, but she was self made and was mocked and destroyed for it by the media. Here, we have someone with no prior political experience (don’t give me the family crap, she herself has never governed) and suddenly she’s one of the best choices for US Senate. This family has more houses than McCain, but we don’t hear about it though.

Posted by: holdfam1 | December 7, 2008, 2:45 am 2:45 am

Give me a break. This woman has no qualifications. She is a joke. She strikes me as another of the long list of Kennedys who whose clame to fame is the Kennedy name.
Who do these people think they are that they can just monopolize the political landscape decade after decade? What has she done? A veepee vetter? Hilarious, she did a terrible job at that.
She is a disgrace in that she supported a racist, unqualified, befriender of terrorists in Barack Obama/Soetoro for starters.
I suppose,If Barack Obama the Kenyan born Indonesian/British citizen can become president by cheating, and broken campaign pledges, anything is possible.

Posted by: badger | December 7, 2008, 4:19 am 4:19 am

She seems like a nice lady, but to give her Hillary’s Senate seat because she is a Kennedy is just RIDICULOUS !!!!!
This is just another payback from Obama to get Ted Kennedy to endorse him.

An editor of children’s books connected to a family with a history of lies and deceit. Sounds fully qualified to me! I think Oprah has spent enough time as a resident of Chicago to qualify to become Senator in Illinois. My guess is she will replace Obama as Senator. The lunatics are officially running the asylum. P.S. – I just love spell-checking Obama.

Caroline is a woman with class unlike her Republican counterpart Sarah Palin. Caroline will make a fantastic U S Senator and the state of New York should be very happy and proud.

Posted by: Drew Hoffman | December 7, 2008, 9:05 am 9:05 am

All is falling into place. Robert Kennedy did all he could for African- American rights and to see his niece take this seat would make and her father very proud. Hope she accepts it.Caroline, please continue what your family has created and you’ll be great. This country needs people like you. Good luck and God bless. No doubt she would be accepted by a landslide.

Posted by: zorra | December 7, 2008, 10:06 am 10:06 am

God forbit anything happens to Ted and if it did I have a feeling he would want her to fill his shoes there also. It’s either Mass or NY. Another Kennedy could always take over Ted’s position if he decided to retire. I also think Biden’s son would be great in a senate seat. It’s in their blood to serve the country, contrary to some others who do it for personal reasons. Please Caroline, you must keep the Kennedy name alive and best of luck, beautiful girl.

Posted by: zorra | December 7, 2008, 10:10 am 10:10 am

Jeb Bush for Senator? After all his been thru he deserves the seat. Wish him well also.

Posted by: zorra | December 7, 2008, 10:19 am 10:19 am

Please, no more Bush’s! It’s hard to believe how one family can do so much damage to our country. Savings and Loan disaster under Bush 41, bank failures under Bush 43, recession after recession in both their terms and now possibly a depression. Thanks, but no thanks to anymore Bush’s including Jeb.

I thought that Obama stood for chang? Caroline Kennedy is not change. Clinton is being sent out of the country. Ted kennedy wants to create health care? I liked Hilay’s healthcare policy. A national health care policy is great for THE People and for business. Hey Ted hope you ask Hilary for her imput. She had the IDEA back in the 90′s.

Posted by: ilene | December 7, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

Caroline Kennedy as replacement for HRC? Good idea. She has political capital, she is smart, well spoken…I do not think that Jackie would be upset at all and somewhere Rose and Joe are clapping saying ” You Go Girl.” I do not want to see a man take HRC’s seat. Obama’s seat is another story= That should go to an Afro American or Latino-though again I would rather see the appointment be female. That would give us 16 in a field of 100 and we would still be behind most 3rd world countries for female leadership.

gee, can I have the senate seat? I have the same qualifications as Caroline (honarable, smart, want to do good for country) Kennedy….oh wait, I don’t have wealth and family ties.

Posted by: kim | December 14, 2008, 7:24 pm 7:24 pm

no more f–king kennedys please . Alright her dad was shot in office, we are sorry for that ,but does that make her qualified to be our senator? compared to Palin she has NO EXPERIENCE !!! only a name and quite frankly we are tired of that name. go to the compound get a tan , and leave our state alone. The only one that is related to a Kennedy worth anything is Arnold .

Posted by: george searing | December 15, 2008, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

Whatever the qualifications it time for the Kennedy family to retire from politics. Enough already.

Posted by: not another1 | December 25, 2008, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm

So, she thinks she can just waltz right in on her name and that’s that? What is she, CRAZY? She is showing her french again !! Perhaps this anorexic housewife with a degree from Harvard and Columbia but whom has never practised a day of law in her life would like to take over a job it would have been to not have given her children Russian names! Oh by the way she is a distant cousin of mine and I am sooo tired of these people being treated like they are royalty for petes sake! She truly believes she has entitlement to this position and thinks she is the only choice-HA! Her first mistake was meeting with Al Sharpton-PLEEEZ! The second was actually thinking she was qualified for this position and the third is thinking she can glide right into this position, it almost makes me not want Hillary to leave this position because she has been so good at it. If she wants it let her run for it the next time it comes around, then she spend her millions on actually being deserving of it, I cannot even believe she is so conceited to think she could actually pull it off, she ain’t that smart!!

Posted by: Margaret Heaney | December 27, 2008, 1:27 pm 1:27 pm

Oh and if anyone wants to know how we are related-My grandmother Johanna Powers (Fitzgerald) Barron from New Ross, Ramsgrange, Cnty Wexford Ireland was first cousin to Rose FItzgerald Kennedy.

Makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE if Caroline Kennedy is appointed to Hillary’s seat in 2009 or not. Why? Because in just a little over a year she’ll have to start a re-election campaign, and at that point she’ll either “go, or blow” as we say in stock car racing. If Patterson selects her now, it’s really only giving her a first-round bye in the primary as the “incumbent”. She might not even make it through that round on her own… but OTOH, if he appoints someone else, she could certainly challenge and win the 2010 primary. OR NOT. She could also lose in that primary, appointed or not.
So, she either gets a one-year trip past “go” now with an ugly primary battle ahead and likely upset by an upstate Republican in 2010… or she campaigns behind-the-scenes for two years and has an ugly primary battle, which even if she wins, she’ll still face a native upstate Republican in the 2010 general election – and will probably lose because upstate is largely Republican.
