Axelrod: Obama Will Give Out of Iraq Command on Day One
In our interview this morning on "This Week" incoming White House senior adviser David Axelrod told me that this Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama will call in his military commanders to ask them to come back with a plan to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq in 16 months.
"That was something that he’s consistently said," Axelrod said. "He believes that that is a reasonable timetable. We’ve moved a great distance from the time he started talking about that. And now we’re in an area where everyone agrees that we should be on a path to withdrawing those troops. And he is going to begin that process as promised on that day."
"He’ll give the command?" I asked.
"Yes," Axelrod said.

I thought we were ALREADY getting out of Iraq? Didn’t the United States sign a pull-0ut agreement with Iraq already to be accomplished by 2012? Yea, I know, it was BUSH who got us in and IS getting us out. Obama is entitled to his own opinions but not his own facts or unfortunately which is all too evident: His own glory.

I’m ammazed that someone that has “no” military experience is being given the right to tell any military what to do.

I am amazed that anyone with “no” military experince even got elected, besides the fact that he is not even a “natural born” citizen.

Free advice for Obama: As your first act as president you should pardon Ramos and Compean. Never mind worrying about the trash a GITMO.

When the first attack happens on American soil because of Obama’s politicalization of the CIA what will the American people say? The Press will say WELL.. I was bound to happen yet it hasnt happened for 8 years has it? The American press core that has worked for Obama for quite a while. Its time we fired this group of non journalists and find new ones.
People wonder why the papers are going broke? When they stoped being news papers and started being marketing papers for the DNC.
Its going to be both painfully sad when everyones worst fears come true.
Trillions spent and instead of having the brass to put his faith in the American people he is going to try and spend his way out. ROFL.. This didnt work with the trillion that congress hurried up and spent already. So its a joke. But hey its Obama adminstration so its OK..
Hire a guy who cheated on his taxes that doesnt pay his taxes.
SO hes a crook and thats OK cause he is an Obama choice.

Obama just said, “if you can play gottcha I wouldnt be President” and yet that was his whole campaign.
ROFL.. Oh man this guy lies with a straight face.

The question is not IF there will be an interdiction of Obama’s Presidency by the Supreme Court, the questions are WHEN and HOW that interdiction will transpire — that is, if the USA is to continue as the Constitutional Republic that now exists.

The cost for this war has been greater than we know. Former World Bank VP + Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has studied the cost to the US for war in Iraq – he states it is around $3 Trillion. Stiglitz believes spending on Iraq was a hidden trigger for the financial crisis because the Fed responded to the massive financial drain of the war by flooding the American economy with cheap credit.

Must people writting on this blog be “Racist” about their comments about President Barack Obama already…..Well, since some are having difficulties getting use to someone out of white race to lead us in America obviously that’s a shame running around with hatred.Anyways, since George Bush and rest of crews put us through this shameful predicament we’re suffering on for more than 7yrs ago it’s time we change course for better end the wreckless war in Iraq and start putting our folks back to work with good qualities of life plus saving dollar values around the globe.

Isn’t it ironic GW has been doing some of BO’s work on this topic? Of course, the Iraqis wanting to kick us out in a year or two anyway seems to help the cause. Support the troops. Bring them home now.

The only reason Obama is not being handed an Iraq in civil-war-mode, and facing a humiliating withdrawal and defeat is the success of Gen Petreas’ “Surge” strategy… which has now won the war.
This policy was vehemently opposed by Obama, and Biden even came-up with a harebrained scheme for splitting the country in three. When Obama had been proven wrong, and Bush, Cheney, and McCain right- he simply dropped the subject on the campaign trail.
And the stable, democratic Iraq of today has already signed a withdrawal agreement with the Bush Administration… so what exactly is the purpose of this charade?

It’s astounding how miserable some people are. Bush, smush give it a name whatever alledged removal of the troops in 2012…people are steady dying over there..for what…you all can be so judgemental…have any of you had anyone die over there? No the neighbor down the street or around the corner have you lost a husband, son, a daughter, what the hell are we over there for, spending money over there that America’s tired broke self needs. 2012 is far too long…16 months is too long but it’s better than 2012. Don’t criticize the man (BO) you’ve never given him a chance all you know is that deep seeded hatred that has been embedded in your head. If you are all that disturbed you need to make arrangements to get the *&^&%#$@ out of this country. Don’t talk about it be about it…be bold go to France, Spain or Australia if you think you will be better off. Your screws definitely needs tightened up if you think America is in a good place from GWB Jr, he pleased soley himself, doing what he thought was best…RIGHT! He had a hidden agenda from the start and you want to talk about suck ups…he’s got all of you on his team. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. It doesn’t matter who has the troops come home, if you were to do it, you would have a whole lot of Americans thanking you, if the homeless man downtown LA did it he would receive the praise from so many people who have been praying for this to be over. Weapons of mass destruction my behind, miss me with all of your BS!

Stupid is as stupid does, think you need to be less bias, chill out on the anger and put things in proper perspective.
I don’t want my sons or grandsons going back to Iraq again sometime down the road to finish the job because barrack wants to withdraw the troops to fulfill his agenda. Iraq left unchecked will be more dangerous and more American will die later if we have to go back.
And based on what do you think barrack will do great? his vast experience? questionable judgments? With rev wright as his spiritual leader, what can possibly go wrong.
We saw the libs bashing our country in the last few years and none of them is leaving. Don’t know why the libs love terrorists so much, they’ll do anything to protect them.

We arent ‘fleeing ‘ Iraq.
We WON in Iraq. We are now re deploying. Srry activists, your whining years about Iraq are over.
I will forever be disqusted with Bush/ Cheney/ Rumsfelds decision to invade a soverign nation and occupy it unprovoked.
Howevr, once there, the decision to stay and finish the job instead of just leave when things didnt go our way and leave the country in total turmoil saved what credibility we had left in the world.
Kudos to Bush on that front and IDIOT marks for Obama / Clinton and others who thought we should just yank the troops out and leave the Iraq people in total ruin.
Posted by: infoseeking | January 19, 2009, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm
Big Question: Why is it up to the USA to decide when to leave Iraq? It’s a sovereign nation with an allegedly democratically elected government. If we are told to leave, we either respect the will of the Iraqi people’s sovereign government OR … we are just foreign invaders who are illegally occupying the country.

One of you asked why George Stephanopoulos was sucking up to Axelrod? You guys haven’t seen anything yet. This guy (GS) was made to get bent over during every interview he conducts with this administration. The toughest question he might ask of BHO or someone in his cabinet is: “Why is BO made of sweetness and light?” Talk about the Cult of Personality!!! Typical for people with Liberal views.

“have any of you had anyone die over there?”
I have relatives there RIGHT NOW, and have lost relatives in military actions under Clinton!
1. Therer is NO Draft, so going into the military is a CHOICE!
2. Joining the miliatry forces means BY DEFINITON, you are willing to sacrifice your life for this country!
3. Feeling anger about the loss of a loved one in war is natural, I have gone through a couple of times. At a certain point, you have to stop whining about your family’s loss & have some respect for your family member’s choice to serve and his/her understanding of what that means!
Posted by: Mike_C | January 20, 2009, 10:03 am 10:03 am
By the way George,
Perhaps it would have been appropriate to ask Mr Axelrod exactly what the Obama Administration’s EXIT STRATEGY is for Afghanistan. Since it is common knowledge from statements made during and after the campaign that many of the troops currently in Iraq will be deployed to Afghanistan.
Come On George – This was a big issue that the Dems & the Media blasted the Bush Administration on! Time to step up to the plate and be a “real” journalist!

16 months from now? For the first time 16 months is reasonable thanks to George Bush. BO’s been saying 16 months since last spring.
Anyway, he’ll put so many qualifiers on it like it has to be “reasonable” or “in progress” that he could promise it in a month and still be considered truthful.
Good lord…. he’s a politician

My, my, my how you unethical people switch your tune. Can’t you stay on point for one minute? Your loud cries that “…we can’t Cut And Run!” is still ringing in my ears. When candidate Obama made it known that the terrorists responsible for 9-11 are from, and are still in Afghanistan, not Iraq, you acted like classic mouth breathers. You constantly replied with, “Huh? Saddam Hussein is the terrorists… and he’s got the WMD’s to prove it… and he sent them A-rabs to bomb us… and he was killing his own people… and a strike against Saddam is a strike against the terrorists… uh… uh… uh… and he’s got WMD’s!”
Man oh man! I am just dumbfounded at those unethical people posting here. School time for you Rovites. Obama was called low names by Bush, Cheney, and impliedly so by McCain when he proposed withdrawal from Iraq. All honest people remember that it was just months ago that anyone advocating ending the war in Iraq was called a cut-and-run coward. Remember, McCain didn’t say “we’re almost done in Iraq”. Instead he said (just months ago) that we would stay in Iraq until it’s through- even up to 100 years. George Bush simply co-opted Obama’s plan at the very tail end of his term in a clear attempt to steal Obama’s thunder. Immediately after Obama won the election, in November, there was a marked change in Bush’s actions. All of a sudden he was in favor of withdrawal from Iraq (when only days before the election, it was unthinkable to even whisper ‘cut-and-run’). Safety-wise, Iraq is no different today, in January 2009 than it was in October 2008 when ostensibly John McCain still had a chance to win the election. But once McCain was officially voted out, Bush scrambled to get a signed SOFA with Iraq. Just as recent as July 2008, ABC did a report they titled ‘Reality Check On The Front’ in which they parroted Bush’s point (5 months ago) that it would be dangerous and foolish to withdraw from Iraq until the Mission was Accomplished. They stressed Bush and McCain’s position that putting a timetable on withdrawal would just encourage the enemy and also that any withdrawal must be ‘conditions based’. But the SOFA that Bush signed is not ‘conditions based’. It is a plain cold TIMETABLE based withdrawal without the benefit of any ‘conditions’ of Iraqi security (real similar to Obama’s proposal at that time). The exact thing that Bush said was dangerous, Anti-American, and Cowardly defeatism. And the Iraqis have not miraculously trained their security force in five months. Are there any honest Republicans here? Anyone old enough to remember the Iran Hostage Crisis? The Iranians for 444 days thumbed their nose at America because they knew Carter was weak. But when Reagan won the election in November, the Iranians and Carter were scrambling to make a deal– and they did. Technically the hostages were freed because of a deal that Carter engineered. But we all know in reality that Reagan was perceived as a much stronger no-nonsense character, and was feared by the Iranians. Carter was anxious to salvage whatever legacy he had left, and the Iranians didn’t enjoy thinking how short their lives would be if Reagan came after them. So, at virtually the same time Reagan was standing on the podium, taking his Oath of Office, the Iranians were untying the American hostages and pushing them on planes headed back to America. Now we have the failure, Bush Junior, doing a “Carter” — trying to save whatever legacy he has left by ‘ending’ the war he started. The Iraqi leadership is contemplating how short their lives will be if President Obama begins withdrawing troops immediately. They know they are just the American puppet government, and not the rightful leaders of Iraq. So they are anxious to get some kind of guarantee of American troop presence in Iraq– and they got it from Bush Junior. Junior guaranteed them troops until 2012. If you Rovites are willing to say that Carter (Democrat) was a great President because he got the Iranian hostage freed, then you can say that Bush Junior ended the war and I will accept that as your honest belief, however misguided it may be. Can I get ANY honest Republican to say Amen?
Just so you have clear concept of me, I can’t stand George Stephanopolous. He is a cold, calculating person who (in my opinion) has shown low ethical and moral character in the past. George Stephanopolous was to Bill Clinton what Karl Rove was to Bush Junior. The cold, calculating, behind-the-scenes “dirty tricks” guy.
Of recent Presidents, I voted for Carter– and regreted it. I voted for Reagan and will always be proud of that. I voted for Reagan again, and am still proud of that. I voted for GHW Bush Senior because he promised he wouldn’t let Congress talk him into a tax raise– and I ended up regretting that– I guess I’ll have to brush up on my lip-reading–apparently I read his lips wrong. I voted for Bill Clinton because I couldn’t bring myself to vote for the apparently weak-willed (or gullible) Bush Senior. Then I voted for Bill Clinton again and I was happy with my choice right up to the point where he lied, under oath, on the witness stand concerning his specific relationship with certain women. My fellow Democrats tried to recast the issue as persecution of Bill because of private matters (sex) that had no bearing on Bill’s ability to run the country. Sorrowfully, many Republicans claimed that the wrongdoing was specifically Bill’s having extramarital sex right there in the White House. Let he who is without sin cast… The truth, to me, is that Bill’s wrongdoing was his lying under oath in a court of law. The top man in the Executive Branch, Clinton, (the branch that is responsible for enforcement of the law) lies under oath in court. Sad and shamefull. Next I voted for Bush Junior and was just fine with that choice until 2003 when Bush forced our country to start an unprovoked war in Iraq. Even though I say “Bush” I know it wasn’t actually him alone. It was mostly Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and their buddies at the “Project For A New American Century”. Can I get any honest Republican to agree? Then it came time to vote again, and all I could moan was “Kerry?!!??!! That’s the best person my party can come up with?? Oh jeez- we’re doomed…” That election was, for me, a ‘least of two evils’ election. I knew I didn’t want Bush Junior again, but I definitely didn’t want Kerry either. Nonetheless, Kerry got my vote. On the day after the election, my wife gave me the good news and the bad news all in one short two-word sentence, “…Kerry lost…” This election cycle, Barack Obama got my vote. Why did I write this long story? It is because Republican, Democrats and Independents are all Americans. We must get back to being honest people. Too many ordinary people recently have shown a chilling eagerness to blatantly distort the truth to either defend their side or to disparage the other side. The Democrats are not right all the time, and the Republicans are not right all the time. The bad ones in all political parties get away with it because they too easily use the divide-and-conquer principle. On the Democratic side, we have cause for concern because the President is allowing scofflaws to take high powerful positions in his administration. Pelosi, in Congress, is apparently only interested in Money, perks and power. On the Republican side, it is scary that a number of people on the internet are already proclaiming their support for Sarah Palin for President in 2012. Blindly following your Leader or your Party is not a true trait of Free People. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others are war criminals. Wrong does not become right just because it is “our” team doing the wrong. Starting an unprovoked war of agression is a war crime. Many people were hanged at Nuremburg after WWII for that exact same thing. It does not make it okay just because it is OUR team doing it.
