Bush Warns GOP to Avoid ‘Anti-Immigrant’ Label

ABC News’ Tahman Bradley Reports: President Bush said the Republican Party should remain open-minded about immigration reform and not adopt an "anti-immigrant" message as it tries to bounce back from election defeats.

Bush backed a bill in the 110th Congress that would have increased border enforcement while also providing legal status and a path to citizenship for the 12 million or so illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S. Even with strong support from the White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., several prominent Republicans came out against the bill, and the immigration reform compromise fell apart during the summer of 2007.

"It’s very important for our party not to narrow its focus – not to become so inward looking that we drive people away from a philosophy that is compassionate and decent," said Bush.

"And we should be open-minded about big issues like immigration reform, because if we’re viewed as anti-somebody — in other words, if the party is viewed as anti-immigrant — then another fellow may say, ‘Well, if they’re against the immigrant, they may be against me.’ We’ve got to be a party for a better future."

The outgoing president made his comments on "Fox News Sunday".

This is the whole problem with the two faced Republican party. They clearly can’t stand immigrants, but they put on a political face that says they are on their side. This type of politicking happesn on both sides of the aisle, but the Republicans take it to the exteme on major issues, unlike the Dems. What they don’t understand is that there is a younger more informed generation that is upon us, and they can see right through these type of smoke screens. This is the information age, as opposed to the “keep them in the dark age” that Republicans thrived on for years.

The sad part of Bush’s comments are that, to him “a better future” is not a better way of life for Americans, it is a future where more people vote Republican. Money and power are what they are all about.

Thank you President Bush. You have been a great President. You have kept us safe – your morals are outstanding – you are a family man and God Bless you in what you do next. You were not a Rock Star, you never tried to be – Yes, I am a Republican, but even if I wasn’t, I would have voted for you. May your days be Happy and Bright and know you were great. CNN asks peoples advice and then makes the poll be whatever they want it to be. ABC is totally gone crazy and Fox and Friends are the only TV station to watch. I know you will be happy back in Texas, after all, it is the best place to live.

President Bush you hae been a great President. God will surely bless you for all you have done to keep us safe these past years. God will be good to you and Mrs. Bush as you return to your beloved Texas. Thank you again and again. The polls come from CNN and ABC, where they make them be what they want them to be. You have made us proud to be an American and not for the first time either.

Of course Mr. Bush doesn’t care about overrunning our country with illegal immigrants. He doesn’t have to worry about his neighborhood being infested by gangs, the decline of his children’s school, closing emergency rooms, declining wages or a social service system that has been so overwhelmed, it cannot meet the needs of American born citizens. We’ll be happy to welcome illegals Mr. Bush, if you agree that they all move into your town.

In this case, Bush is right. We very much need illegal worker legislation that is fair and compehensive. This would include border security. This would benefit the USA and the illegal worker.
Sadly, the GOP has not learned its lesson. Republican senators in the State of Texas Senate have filed bills that would cancel an employer’s right to do business in TX should these folks be found in his employ. The same bills became law in AZ. This resulted in huge losses to AZ in the agricultural and business development fiels. Consultants specialzing in helping firms relocate have crossed AZ off their lists; AZ had to develop a state worker program and many conventions have cancelled their bookings in AZ. If TX does pass like legislation, TX econmy will be hurt big time.

The problem is NOT immigration, it’s Illegial immigration. The record of illegial immigration has shown that it has exploded 70 percent since 1945. Bottom line, there isn’t enough money to cover benefits for all American citizens even if you exclude all illegial immigrants. The system is Bankrupt! Social security is Bankrupt! How does adding more dependents make it solvent? It doesn’t! This isn’t even racist, this is a wake up call to fiscal SANITY! We can keep the number of illegial immigration and let it expand… but are you willing to sacrifice public works, health care, and all of the other daily services YOU depend on, so some people can bring their entire families over here, and instead of investing that money HERE, send it back to their own countries? That’s ok if you agree with that, but don’t call people racists for bringing up this VERY REAL dilemma. Perhaps you should see what the US Comptroller David Walker had to say about this very problem. Do you think a guy appointed by Clinton is racist for making these points about the insolvency of our current fiscal crisis??? DEBT IS bi-partisan!!! Government exists to perpetuate itself be it with Democrats (social spending) OR Republicans (military spending) in office. The state’s loyalty is the STATE, NOT YOU! The sooner people realize that, and actually hold their representatives accountable for their actions… the sooner we can eliminate wasteful spending and get our economic house in order.

beto is right about the legislation also in AZ that takes away a businesses’ license if they are found to be employing illegals. However I totally disagree with beto’s conclusion. This legislation has helped immensely discourage illegals from coming here to work. There was a report recently that apartment rates have gone back down because the illegals are leaving. Before it had been going up and up quickly. There are more jobs for legal citizens now and all around it is better here. Thank you Governor Nepolitano for pushing this legislation through!
Oh yeah, Bush is WAY wrong on this issue.

There is a HUGE difference between LEGAL immigration and ILLEGAL immigration.
Example for all you that can’t understand.
GOOD:
You invite guests to come stay at your house. They stay for a while and leave.
This is LEGAL! This is NO PROBLEM, CORRECT?
BAD:
People just show the crap up and make themselves at home. THE POLICE will not make them leave. This is ILLEGAL! THIS IS A PROBLEM, CORRECT?

Posted by: ajax | January 11, 2009, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

Great analogy ajax. Illegal immigration has bankrupted California and I don’t understand why people refuse to differentiate between legal and illegal immigration. I am all for LEGAL immigration. Wait your turn, learn the language and be willing and able to support yourself without taxpayer subsidies and I welcome you with open arms. Crash through the borders, drop a kid and force us to support you and the rest of your family and I want you deported ASAP. It really is that simple.

President Bush is right about immigration … but so far the Democrats haven’t done any more that the Republicans … except run from the issue! Rather than focus on citizenship, the government should focus on some type of “guest-worker” legal status. Not every immigrant that comes to work here wants to be a citizen, but if we had a “guest-worker” status, all could be tracked and documented to make sure we don’t let those with criminal backgrounds into the country.

T- Bush has done no war crimes. Millions of people in Iraq are free from a murderer. Bush only enacted the Iraqi Liberation Act of 1998 that was started by President Clinton. Please educate yourself on the original U.N. resolution of 1991. Please refer to something he’s done that fits it. He hasn’t destroyed the working class or the poor. It’s the dems who want the poor to stay where they are and not go up in society. They want people to rely on the government which makes them powerful. It’s the democratic playbook. Actually, under Clinton, the rich paid more taxes than under Bush. Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is a fact. Nor has he walked over the Constitution. Please refer to what article you are basing this on? There were more military deaths during the Carter years than any during the Iraqi conflict. I’ll miss Bush and will cringe every time I look at Obama. Illigal immigration is a huge problem. Both parties need to come together and give really good solutions. They cause our hospitals, schools and jails huge burdens. Only when both parties stop bickering will we have solutions.

T – correction, the rich paid LESS in taxes under Clinton. The bottom 50% of income earners pay 2.9% of all income taxes.

American govt, is confussed in many ways. here are some reasons why this comment; If one came here with VISA does he/she illegal immigrant? But the truth of the matter is that America classified every Immigrant both those who are here with VISA and those who not as Illegal immigrant. Again one has been here for more than 9yrs working paying tax he is illegal, after genueily marry their daughter for 6yrs in love and happiness, he is still under suspicious good or bad person to live with them.It is good with them.

@T,
I am not too much into Religion myself, althought I do believe in GOD. Being raised in a Baptist home and attending church for my first 16 years of my life, I do remember that GOD decides who goes to heaven and who does not.
Did God turn that over to you, now? You are the one that decides whether Bush is Christian or not?

Let us say I park my Camper on your property and live there with your permission. How many years are you going to give me to live there?
Now, let us say, you want to sell your property, is someone going to buy it with me living in my camper?
You into sharing, then there are a lot of homeless that need somewhere to put up their box. You going to let them come over, also? Hell, at least most of them are born American. :)

I am a Conservative and wish that Pres Bush would be quite on this issue!! Yes we can as a nation shut down our borders to illegal aliens. Yes we can catch the sobs that are now here illegaly and send them back. The media controls too much via “thier” opinions and the left is soaking it up. I feel sorry for Democrats because they are such suckers. Step up and be a Patriot for once.

not one nation, country or region has unregulated entry.
The USA has laws for entry and millions happily followed them.

The problem w/ both of the defeated bills was that they were long on amnesty, short on enforcement and accountability. For the GOP to turn its back on the citizenry in order to kowtow to corporate interests and illegal advocate, is a slap in the face. Every American citizen needs to demand our Congress and new president make the E-verify system (the one proven tool to the hiring and exploitation of illegal labor) both mandatory and permanent. They must demand that our immigration laws be enforced and all immigrants are identified. All illegal aliens should be given the option of leaving on their own immediately or facing expulsion and absolutely no chance to re-enter and all our borders need to be tightly secured w/ advanced entry capabilties along both borders. Our seas must be made safe by rejecting any and all peoples who enter illegally via the high seas, including all Cubans.
There is no need for illegal labor. We have more than dozen varying types of work visa programs and moreover we have millions of unemployed Americans who should be put to work. We have hundreds of thousands of able-bodied people collecting welfare who should be put to work and we have the capabilities to give the agriculture industry tax incentives to mechanize many aspects of their operation, so human labor is no longer exploited.

Got to say – yes – most folks do not understand what is happening with illegal immigration in America. If you think Illegal Immigration will make your childrens life easier then you just have not been paying attention. The Republicans lost because the Republican base like myself simply could not work or vote for a RINO like McCain, or Bush for that matter. We are NOT anti-immigrant – we are Pro-American. Soldiers and War Veterans did not serve and die for the flag of Mexico. /ji

Let’s take a look at the bills that will soon pass Congress and be signed by our new president. 1)Amnesty for illegal aliens. 2)Open borders. 3)Strict gun control and circumvention of the Second Amendment. 4)Increase in gasoline tax and tax on new cars. 5)Increased welfare. 6)Reduction in military spending. 5)Signing of treaties with the UN regardless of conflict with our Constitution. —- I pray that our constitution will survive the next 4 years with enough strength to elect a president and congress who will honor their oath to protect and defend it. Probably won’t but I’ll pray for it anyway.

Republicans love immigrants. They love people who will come here, work for next to nothing, take jobs from Americans, and make them and their cronies more money at the expense of the country as a whole. They love work visa’s and they hate organizations that protect American workers. They are about nothing but money and power and they could care less who they hurt to get it.

There are more Americans united about the anti-immigrant stance than just the GOP. It’s clear that illegal immigration from Latin America is still out of control. These people don’t follow the rules. They just jump the fence. It’s clear we can’t get them all out. Some have been here for decades. But the US should totally shutdown the border and strive for zero tolerance of illegal immigration going forward until we can get control of this situation. By and large, latino illegals bring nothing of substance into America. In fact, employers willingly employ them over tax paying Americans. The illegals know this and exploit it. Providing services for these people is burdening America and weighing down an already unbalanced system. However, now the lousy economic climate makes America less attractive job wise.

It is impossible to be painted as anti-immigrant from the liberals unless you are for a melting of our US borders.
All of us here are immigrants, but the need to come to this country LEGALLY has never been greater. Our gov’t should know who is here and for how long they are planning to stay. Without that knowledge, anarchy could follow.

I don’t mind sealing the borders; tell me which taxes you want to raise to pay for it. If we bring the troops home from the BS wars, I suppose they could be reassigned to the southern border.

DK
Of the 50 wealthiest members in congress, 27 of them are democrats. So much for the party of the common man, huh?
Democrats have been able to paint themselves as messiahs of the poor for years, but in actuality, all they do is shove entitlements down peoples’ throats.
This ensures two things: democrats get re-elected and democrats pockets get more $$$ in them.
Gore, Pelosi, Kennedys, Rockefellers, Kerry, Edwards, Clintons. They are all EXTREMELY wealthy by “robbing from the rich to feed the poor”. What a crock.

Hello Mr. Bush:
You caused the GOP defeats. Not an anti-immigrant bias. Who are you to lecture us about GOP defeats when you have been clearly the most hated president in history? Who told you go go to Iraq? You promised during your campaign that you are not going to be in the business of “nation building”. You lied to us and broke your promises.

Why does everyone confuse being anti illegal immigrant with being anti immigrant? I have no problem with legal immigrants. I believe this country was built on immigrants and it is good for us. But legally. People coming here illegally don’t care about our laws. They will not be good citizens.

Posted by: rose | January 12, 2009, 11:23 am 11:23 am

There is a big difference between anti-immigrant and anti-illegal-immigrant. I don’t know anyone who is anti-immigrant. The system needs to be reformed from the inside-out, though. Fix the problems that make it difficult for honest immigrants to legally come to the country.
I think a lot of people don’t realize that illegal immigration is not a victim less crime. Very often, in order to find work in this country, illegal immigrants must buy stolen identities and social security numbers so that they can be hired. The media loves to overlook that side of illegal immigration. There’s a pretty sophisticated network in place to help immigrants buy identification and ss numbers stolen from Americans.
Not to mention that half of the resources on the border are devoted to stopping illegal drug smuggling – a good percentage of illegal immigrant traffic is a result of drug smugglers, who come into this country heavily armed to deliver drugs to neighborhoods throughout the US.

I can’t disagree with the president more. We have a controlling party that is ONLY interested in expanding and maintaining is POWER we need a party that is actually looking out for the good of the country. And shutting down criminal immigration is more important now than it’s been in generations. We have hundreds of thousands of jobs being cut, we can’t afford to let criminals skip the border and do them.

hmmm. So are we to welcome illegal immigrants. We can welcome immigrants, just not illegals.. meaning those who commit crime, cross our borders illegally or overstay their visas. They commited a crime. A crime is a crime! No matter how you turn it! Not to mention they are taking US Citizen jobs, bringing our healcare system down, and stealing our id’s and Soc. Sec. numbers…. I believe it’s one of the reasons we are in a recession and companies can hire them for cheap.

Our country is slowly going down the tubes because of illegal immigration and a do-nothing attitude by our representatives. California has had 80 hospitals close in the last 10 years due to unpaid bills by illegals. Our state budget is in the red partly because of benefits given to illegals and most of them work under the table, do not pay taxes, sned most of their money back to Mexico, our schools costs have escalated because of them, our prisons are full of them at a cost of $30,000 each per year, several citizens have died because of their gang drive by shootings, our parks and forests have been trashed by their drug manufacturers and pot growers, drunk drivers are rampant and yesterday in Greenfield, Cal. Marcelino Martinez was arrested for selling his 14 year old daughter for money, beer, and meat. It is a major problem in that town. Bush was supposed to represent us, not illegals. He still doesn’t get it apparently. Amnesty begets amnesty, begets amnesty, etc. Let their own country take care of them.

This life long Democrat is opposed to Bush, Reid, Kennedy, Pelosi and all the other open border advocates of amnesty for illegal aliens.
All of them need to learn the words “Rule of Law” and American Sovereignty.
NO AMNESTY, NO DRIVERS LICENSES, NO IN STATE TUITION RATES AND NO ANCHOR BABY CITIZENSHIP FOR BABIES BORN IN THE U.S. TO ILLEGAL ALIEN PARENTS.
