Carter ‘Snubs’ Clinton?

ABC News’ David Wright reports: Today may be a day when the nation briefly sets aside partisan enmity for the peaceful transition of power, but personal enmity?  That’s another matter.

One small example: as the ex-Presidents gathered in the crypt of the Capitol preparing to head out to the platform, a chilly day got a bit chillier as the Carters and the Clintons were forced to occupy the same cramped space.

Former Democratic President Jimmy Carter appeared to greet former Republican President George H.W. Bush and his wife warmly, kissing Barbara Bush on the cheek.  But as Carter passed fellow Democrats Bill and Hillary Clinton, the two men did not appear to acknowledge each others presence at all.

President Carter disputes there was any snub and says any suggestion there was is “erroneous.”  Through a spokesperson at the Carter Center in Atlanta, the former President told ABC News that he had earlier spent a half hour talking to the Clintons and therefore wanted to use the opportunity to say hello to the Bushes while he could.  According to the spokesperson, cameras only caught the later encounter.

Relations between the Carters and the Clintons have reportedly been frosty for years, dating back to 1980, when Carter’s landslide defeat to Ronald Reagan may have cost Clinton the Arkansas governor’s mansion.  At least that’s what Clinton reportedly believed.

In the 90s Clinton was said to resent some of Carter’s freelance diplomacy.  Carter, for his part, spared no criticism of Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Recently, during a photo opportunity at the Oval Office, following a lunch with Barack Obama and the ex-Presidents, Clinton and Carter stood next to one another, but miles apart.  Obama stood between the two Presidents Bush.

Can’t say I blame them. I wouldn’t talk to a Carter or a clinton either.

Did Carter snub Clinton? Clinton snub Carter? Or both?
In any case, this demonstrates what pathetic ex-Presidents Democrats can be.
When two ex-Presidents of the same party behave this way, it tells you plenty about the lack of class Democrats have.

who cares about carter anyway?
he’s a old loon and still carries
the moniker of “worst president ever”.
perhaps he’s ticked off that he still carries that mantle, while clinton carries the moniker of, not, ‘commander in chief’, but, “pervert in chief”.

I can’t argue with either Clinton or carter. Both men are disappointing. Each in his own way.

Proof that EVERYBODY believes that Carter was one of the worst presidents in modern history!

Posted by: Mike | January 20, 2009, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

Both men perpetually juvenile and self-absorbed; Both venomously vengeful;
Both life-long finger-pointers of blame at others for the problems they themselves created.
And for squandering so many pro-American opportunities throughout their pain-inducing terms, both men will be sneered at ubiquitously by historians in perpetuity.

Carter is a douchebag. I was not a big Clinton fan, but he seems like a guy you could have a fun conversation with or go out for a beer. On this day when Bush and Obama share a good time, it tells you much about the heart and lack of class of Jimmy Carter.

Who cares, Carter was the worse president ever, followed by Clinton. Two dorks.

Posted by: Darrell | January 20, 2009, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm

Funny, theres been way more sniping, and political Daggers in the back between the bushes and clintons concerning both campaigning and policy, yet they are all buddy buddy, but one man we know is a Majorly Quality human being and thats Carter, and a great president howsoever a failure as a husband and example in Clinton cant get along when they espouse most of the same policies from the same party.
isnt that interesting.
I still hold Clinton in higher regard for his capabilities as a president. I still hold Carter in much higher regard than the rest of them for his UnWavering integrity and decency.

Who cares about Jimmy Carter, the doddering fool who started the mess we are in now with his de-regulation, faulty economics (although Obama just hired Carter’s former advisor) and Jimmy’s messy middle east tactics. He is a meddler and not very bright guy from a peanut farm in Georgia….in fact he is an insult to most peanut farmers who have always exhibited wit, charm and intelligence.

Posted by: JoeSixPack | January 20, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

After hearing him turn Coretta Scott King’s funeral into a partisan rally, I can’t say I’m ever surprised when Jimmy Carter shows pathetic judgment. Of course, after watching his administration in action, I don’t guess we really even needed the funeral. The guy is pathetic, deluded, and needs to go live in Micronesia, or someplace else where we don’t have to hear about his latest idiocy.

Posted by: The Beekeeper | January 20, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

LOL, wow, who cares? The guy isn’t even done with flubbing his speech yet and you hyenas are scrabbling for some sort of scandal. The press is the problem with this country, not partisan politics, though frankly if you ask me the Clintons and the Carters deserve to be trapped in an elevator somewhere together.

Posted by: Squonkamatic | January 20, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

Carter is a petty man. There has been a tradition of former presidents refraining from degrading the current administration. Clinton respected this tradition, but Carter has acted like a fool. He writings portray antisemitism and his medeling has legitimized Hamas. Carter needs to realize that his accomplishments in his single term does not hold water to the accomplishments of WJC and GWB.

Carter cost people their lives and gutted the Intelligence community while President. He was an inept, confused and completely ineffective President and leader. If he could do the wrong thing that is exactly the path he would chose. He was and still is completely clueless about any of the elements of leadership, foreign policy and how to deal with rogue nations and despots. He thought then and still today he could reason with them. In short he was and still is the worst President in history.

Hmmm… this is newsworthy? How does this news improve our economy? Make us safer as a nation? Make us stronger as a nation? Is this significant? For a gossip page, maybe. For the majority of us who are ready to work for the betterment of this nation and world, this is a waste of space and time. It is ABCNews, not ABCGossip. You can do better than that.

Hey, I think I can hear terrorists beating their AK’s into farm equipment! OH, the French love us now! The ocean tide is receding as we speak! Isn’t it glorious? I can hear polar bears humping because they’re more optimistic about their future!

I agree with most of the previous comments as this shows a lack of class by both of these two self-absorbed men. Neither one really achieved as much as they could have for our country. This light shown into their souls prevented them from arising to what could have been because in the long run they only care about themselves and their legacy.

Get off the team mentality of democrats and republicans ..as Bill Clinton’s mentor said, “The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can “throw the rascals out” at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy.”

carter is an embarassment. I despise bill clinton, but I would take him over carter any day. carter almost succeded in making americans give up. he almost pushed this glorious country over the brink. he should crawl into a hole and never show his face again. But being the complete loser that he is, he doesn’t get it, and the other living presidents are too gracious to tell him!!!

Posted by: mmouse | January 20, 2009, 12:33 pm 12:33 pm

It looked to me more like Carter snubbed Clinton, walking off so fast and not making any eye contact. Clinton looked after him as he walked away. It was a one-way snub–I think Clinton would have been polite, but Carter totally ignored him. Classless.

i guess Obama stood between the Bushes because he knows they have more integrity and class than Clinton and Carter. people may hate the bushes with passion cuz of their policy, but i have seen nothing but graciousness from the bushes administration to the incoming new president. Clinton’s lack of respect for the incoming administration reflect on who he is as a person (that and his disrespect for women-why the media had to force feed us saying that he is “sexy” is beyond me).
Carter is old, he needs to retire. i do not get how he can be a communist sympathizer, maybe that’s where he should go retire, in North Korea or with Fidel Castro.

Carter is an embarrassment to the office of the presidency, and an embarrassment to America. I’m not overally fond of Clinton, but if I were Bill I would be releived that Jimmah didn’t want to speak. How could anyone objectively want to talk to this guy??

LOL! What a moron!!! He hasn’t even had a full day in office and now he’s the “best” president in history!!! LOL!!! That’s the exact reason people think Democrats are the lower class, uneducated idiots!!! At least be realistic.

I got a kick out of this story – it’s a nice visit back to reality after three days of nearly non-stop inaugural coverage. Thanks ABC!
After tonight, the party’s over anyway. Time to stop pretending that even those Democrats who are noted for peace, really know very little about being peaceful and civil to one another.

I was watching CNBC this morning while these Chris Matthew, leg-tickling types were drooling over every luscious detail of the historic event. One of them casually noted both Lord Barack of Obama and President Bush getting into a brand new Cadillac –dubbed Cadillac One– for the ride to the Inauguration. It caused me to relive another historic memory when, in the 60s and 70s, the taxpayers regularly purchased new Cadillacs for a unique class dwelling in these United States of America.

I see many petty, peevish Republicans snarling about ex Dec presidents. They need to take another look at GOP guys before they get so critical – Nixon, the one that just left and others. Carter has led probably the most exemplary life of any ex president and done more for the good of man. Cinton is also doing a good job. Their petty feud is rather less that good behavior, but why bother about it.

When the baby boomers rejected Carter and went for Reagan was when they went over to the dark side. Carter wanted us to deal with our dependence upon oil imports from unstable areas of the world but got no support from the self-indulgent boomers. He ended caving in and declaring the Persian Gulf to be vital to our national security in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This set the stage for our later interference and our ongoing quest to dominate the Persian Gulf.
Clinton set the stage for Bush II’s renewal of the Cold War by refusing to disband NATO. He got a lot of ego boost from playing king of the world and we’re paying for it now.
Carter was the better man who wanted to do the right thing but backed down for lack of support for doing it. Clinton was the egomaniac who could have done the right thing but chose not to. I’m for Carter but I’m not crazy about either of them. I hope Obama’s more of a Carter than a Clinton.

Drama lives on the left! I mean…this inauguration was like some sort of 150 Million dollar Broadway production (with the exception that good actors do remember their lines… you would think that a constitutional lawyer would be able to repeat the oath of office correctly)
A chamber ensemble with music composed by John Williams for the occasion, Aretha Franklin singing America the Beautiful, poetic readings. How fitting that a couple of Grand Dames like Carter and Clinton put their personal avarice for each other on public display! Sorry that I have to revel in this Obama lovers. We should sanctify this all holy day in your eyes Obamanation.

Posted by: PG | January 20, 2009, 1:09 pm 1:09 pm

I can’t believe the awful comments some of you have made here. According to all who know him, Jimmy Carter failed as a president basically because he refused to play politics and had an unwavering moral compass. Right or wrong, he believed what he believed. Funny how the same thing sunk our now just past president according to all who know him. An unwavering moral compass, whether right or wrong. The two who would compromise, George HW and Bill Clinton, get along great, have mutual respect, and are seen as more successful in their presidencies. Whoever called Carter a douchebag is simply illiterate of the time he was president. Rigid yes. Unwavering yes. Just like GW. Clinton and the first Bush are well known to be moral compromisers who can justify what they did, but who others think have no morals. Which would you rather be? Face it, all presidents are flawed. Let’s just hope the new one is a little less so than his immediate predecessors.

This should be a deliriously happy day for Jimmy Carter. Finally, we have a President who will oust Jimmy from the mantle of “worst President of modern times”. I give Obama two years before he earns the moniker of “worst President of modern times”, pushing Carter to 2nd place and Bush 43 to third place.
A recession that, without government intervention, would have ended by late 2009 or early 2010, will be prolonged for several years because of the FDR-like government expansion and spending of Obama and his Democrat Congress.
Those of you who support Obama, enjoy this time of adulation – you all certainly earned it, winning the election fair and square. Within 24 months, reality will set in, and you will see Obama for the inept, naive, shallow suit that he is – and similarly for Democrat and Rockefeller-Republican leaders.
Within 24 months, the economy will be in worse shape, unemployment will be higher, and our enemies will unfortunately have much more success against us. If the Republicans stay on their current path of big government\Rockefeller Republicanism, serving up nothing but Democrat Lite, then we will continue mired in failure.
So what will help us? Cut taxes, cut spending even more, take the fight to our enemies regardless of borders, stop nation-building, and in general get government out of the way of freedom and liberty.

Posted by: Dave | January 20, 2009, 1:36 pm 1:36 pm

Carter did much more outside the White House than he did when he was President. The one great thing he did was the Camp David Accords, forging a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. I can’t think of any recent President with the diplomatic skills or smarts to broker such a deal.
After his Presidency, his Habitat For Humanity foundation put thousands of homeless people in homes who would have otherwise remained homeless. His book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” was a courageous critque of Israel’s brutal forty year occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. I can’t think of many other American politicians with the guts to take that issue on. So, while he will not be considered a great President, he has done quite a bit of good, more so, I think, than Bush or Clinton. If anything else, he at least has guts and that is refreshing to see these days when so many politicians are bought and paid for.

I often wondered that question myself. He just did not inspire ANY confidence. The price of peanut butter
doubled or more in price during his tenure along with everything else. Interest rates went from 8%-9% to buy a house to 21.5%. Think about it. Interest rates today and for most of Bush’s time have been 5-7%. What if rates were 21-22% today? I lived in the Washington, D.C. area during his presidency and it was not pretty.

Jimmy Carter is a good compasionate man – he wasn’t suited to be president. I don’t think there is a story here. And those of you who do are really reaching and sadly pathetic; I feel sorry for you and will pray for you.
And for the class comment of Randall – I think it shows great class to stand between a father and son – and not go for the obvious political corner. It’s your pessimism that creates a sense of “My way or the highway” in this country. GROW UP and learn to appreciate each person strengths and stop trying to capitalize of thier weaknesses. My father would say – there are two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth. The excitement is at the possiblity of reaching a GREAT COMPROMISE that we all can live with. Jimmy Carter wasn’t a great president but he is the most honorable man ever to sit in the oval office. He will be remembered for his humanitarian work in office and after leaving public service. I would consider it a great honor to shake the hand of President Jimmy Carter. Truly a great man.
Clinton wasn’t much better as a president but his moral character was among the lowest of our presidents. His extra-marital escapades were an embarrassment to the whole nation and his financial dealings would have landed most people in prison. Selling military secrets to a foreign power is treason for most. Slick Willy got away with it. I wouldn’t waste my spit on a man like Bill Clinton. He isn’t worthy of disgust.

My parents, both lifelong democrats still shudder when they think of the Carter years… 14% interest rates… economic turmoil. It makes this current crisis look like next to nothing in comparison.
Imagine people whose ARM mortgages went from $1000 per month to $3000 per month.
That’s what happened in that decade.
My parents started building a house in 1976 and barely survived with those interest rates climbing.

I wouldn’t want to associate with Carter either. Peanut farmer Jimmy was a worse president than W. Bush and W. was pretty bad.
I’ve been alive from Truman through Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson (who messed up Viet Nam), Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr. Clinton, Bush Jr. and now Obama. Of these, Carter was the worst followed by do-nothing Ford. W. would be 3rd from the bottom of this list.
Lets hope That Obama doesn’t finish at the bottom. We need change but I’m not sure his change is the kind we need. I’ll wait and see how it turns out before I make judgement.

First Clinton claims to be the first black president, although he is white. Now Obama is claiming to be the first black president, even though he is half white. What is going to happen when a real black man or woman is elected? Shouldn’t they be the one given that place in history?

Carter was the first president to support human rights. The US has gone downhill morally since Carter was president. Carter was the first president to call for alternative fuels and conservation. Carter was decades ahead of the country. It may be his religous morals that “separates” him from Clinton. Of course, Bush made Clinton look like a saint. Carter is one of the greatest presidents the country ever had.

Posted by: Kramer | January 20, 2009, 2:03 pm 2:03 pm

What typifies both Carter and Clinton is that as they were introduced to walk out to the platform they strolled right past two posted military personnel saluting them and neither of them doing anything to return the salute like Bush 41 did.

Posted by: SteveC | January 20, 2009, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

None of our presidents, including so far Obama, canthold a candle to the morality, civility and dignity that Jimmy Carter restored to this country. He gave us jobs, peace, and was willing to stand up to big government. I hope Obama comes close to this. That is the truth. The Clintons and the Bushes are a total embarassment from the personal life to the screwing of the public that each administration did. Clinton took away our rights to have a decent media and helped our government become a fascist corporation. We all know the killing that the Bushes did. Who would want to stand next to that crap.

I like both Carter and Clinton. I hope the problem is resolved one day. Even if you didn’t like Carter as president, you should read his books, many of which are amazing. He is definitely saintlike. Bill Clinton was a great president, but our nation is too political to admit it, particularly, Obama and his supporters. Bill Clinton was referred to as, “the first black president”–an amazing honor. Obama is definitely second.

You are so right and those lemmings are buying into the explanation that the nation needs a good party, so let’s spend millions on a good party – after all, (despite some private donations) it’s just taxpayer money and there’s always more where that came from!
I think the inaugural spending is actually a great foreshadowing of what’s in store for this country with a yet another tax-and-spend president at the helm.

Kids,
Pay attention here. Before George W. became President, no one mentioned Jimmy Carter as the worst President ever. He had successes and failures like most middle of the road Presidents. But lately, after it became obvious how truly dreadful George W. was at being President, certain revisionists had to come up with a democratic target. Clinton’s budget surplus, job creation and success in international relations was too fresh in the public’s mind to successfully rewrite, so they went after Carter.
To say Carter was the worst President ever is just lame. But for your own peace of mind, pay attention to how W. behaves after office and compare it to how Carter has lived his life after the Presidency. You will find there will be no comparison. Carter is our best ex-President and George W. will be not so much.

Posted by: rich | January 20, 2009, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm

I can’t entirely blame Carter for snubbing Clinton. As good a manager as Clinton was he was not the most moral human being, and made a pact with the devil for power.
Clinton has kowtowed to the Bushes since Bush began his disastorous presidency and has worked with his wife to give failed neo-conservative policies Democratic cover.
Carter may not have been a great president but at least he was not a traitor to his own country like Reagan, impotent like Bush Sr. or a disaster like Georgie.
Of course, I would expect people getting their news from the joke that is ABC to parrot some variation on the conventional wisdom, and I am not disappointed.

James Buchanan? Warren G Harding? And although I have respect for the office, saying how “classy” both Presidents Bush are–Bush 41 employed Lee Atwater, one of the dirtiest political operatives ever, and Bush 43 allowed (by not disavowing) the smears against John McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary. One more example of how far journalists have fallen from the most basic of rules; there are no “ex”-Presidents, there are only “former” Presidents. If I were Carter, I’d snub Clintons too. Clintons are total sell-outs. I’ve really come around on Carter and now think he was more a victim of circumstance who tried to embrace the right ideals that America didn’t want and still doesn’t want — conservation of resources, responsible monetary policy (compare Volcker/Greenspan), peace in Mideast (he was the ONLY modern president who successfully brokered peace between Israel/Arab world).
He’s spoken out on injustice in South Africa, Gaza, etc. And yes, the ONLY modern president who’s child went to public school while in office.
Meanwhile Clintons just keep on keeping on with their opaque and lucrative “foundation” business dealings. TOTAL Hypocrites.

It wasn’t because of Reagan’s victory that Clinton resented Carter, it was the Mariel Boatlift.
Carter opened the borders to Cuba, Castro freed all the Cuban prisoners, and Cuban criminals wound up in Arkansas. Clinton was blamed for the resulting crime wave, and defeated at the polls, so Clinton blamed Carter.
You think that writers working for ABC, would be a little more familiar with History.

They represent corporations, not us. They are immoral, deceitfull and are not honorable enough to sit in the oval office.

I’ve been alive from Truman through Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson (who royally messed up Viet Nam), Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr. Clinton, Bush Jr. and now Obama. Of these, Carter was the worst followed by do-nothing Ford. George W. would be 3rd from the bottom of this list. It would be close to put Johnson there due to Viet Nam but I’m placing Bush lower than Johnson — but not by much. Carter, however, would remain at the bottom of an even longer list.
Like it or not George W. Bush was our President. Sadly, there were many who never stood behind him nor ever accepted him. These same people today expect those who didn’t vote for Obama to do exactly what they themselves refused to do. There is so much hate here and across America for George W. Bush that is really unwarranted. There are those who blame EVERYTHING on this man whether he was responsible or not. That speaks volumes about these people, their hate and their blindness. Well, I believe we need to stand behind and accept our President regardless of who it is. I’m not saying you need to agree with everything but, you need to accept and respect the office. This is something the past 3 generations have refused to do and America is a weaker country because of it. There is more hate in America than ever before. It is time to change this too.
I want our President to succeed. I want a better country. While I already disagree with much of what he is proposing, he deserves the chance to prove me wrong. Every American should hold this thought. Congress is there to protect us from severe damage. Congress makes the laws. Congress directs the President. Bush didn’t go to war on his own. He had nearly full agreement from both parties of Congress. Placing all the blame on him alone is a gross injustice.
Obama will make mistakes as have the 43 Presidents before him. We will get past those too. I hope the hate and blame game doesn’t continue to tear the good out of America’s heart when this happens. It certainly has from Nixon through George W. Did any good come out of all that hate? NO. NONE! Then why do it? Do you feel good inside when you are filled with hate and rage? If so, you need serious help. 233 years of America has proven we will not perish from our mistakes. The biggest mistake America has made in the past 3 generations is their fostering of hate and rage. It it time for that to change here too.
Lets hope that Obama finishes near the top of the next list. We need drastic change in politics. While I’m not sure his change is the kind we need, we do need to help him along the way. We seriously need to get rid of the partisian politics. We need to get rid of the corruption in politics! We need to outlaw lobbying – people elect and vote for candidates, not corporations and organizations, but most of all, we need to rid our society of all this hate and rage. Everything else will work its way out as it has since 1776.
I’ll wait and see how it turns out before I make judgment. I ask everyone to do the same.

Jimmy Carter gave us gas lines, gas rationing, gas that was 5 times more expensive than when he took office, double digit inflation, double digit unemployment and 444 days of a National nightmare. After leaving he’s gone out of his way to talk to dictators and critize America on their behalf. Carter is an embarassment to the Naval Academy and American in general. The Bush’s are class acts and will not be so lame as to critize a former President let alone a sitting one. Go read a history book…you might learn something.

No suprises there. Jimmy Carter esteems himself higher than he ought to. He had a disaster of a presidency:
* Double digit inflation
* Double digit unemployment
* Double digit interest rates
* Iran Hostage crisis
* Gas rationing – even days/odd days
* 55 mph speed limit
* The term “misery index” was invented
Then Carter goes around the world meddling:
* Saddled Clinton with ridiculously failed agreement with North Korea
* Was meddling in Haiti when Clinton was involved in working his plan about Haiti
* Got a Nobel Prize for criticizing Bush’s foreign policy? Bizzare!
* Certified a stolen election in Venezuela that gave us Hugo Chavez

Why, yes I did. Obama spoke in meaningless platitudes, topics all over the place, and unorganized, with nothing decisive or specific. It was another dull campaign speech, devoid of substance. Even the audience seemed bored. Try reading Reagan’s 2 Inaugural speeches and contrast the difference.

I’m no Clinton supporter, but I can perfectly understand why Clinton doesn’t like Carter. Carter MEDDLES where he doesn’t belong!!!!!
When Clinton was dealing with Kim Jong-Il of North Korea, Carter as a private citizen, went over to North Korea without permission or notification to the State Dept, and made an agreement. Then announced the agreement to the world, without Clinton’s involvement or knowlege. So Clinton had to live with the agreement that we now know failed miserably!
So when Bush had to revisit North Korea and nukes, the discussion was about Clinton’s failed agreement. Nobody cared to consider that it was Carter who roped Clinton into that agreement.
Heck yea! Clinton has a right to be highly miffed at Carter. Jimmy Carter is arrogant and a fool!

Carter was and is a clown and Clinton has a big red nose two top performers in what has become the circus that is the Democrat party. I’d snub them both if given the chance.

Obama’s digs in his speech at Bush were very low-class and disgusting. I would say, “Shame on you, Mr. President,” but then he’d have to have the ability to feel shame and know right from wrong. That was gratuitous, evil rudeness on Obama’s part.

I remember well when Reagan cleaned up Carter’s mess. Wow, interest rates were high, as was unemployment. Too bad Bush 41 decided to raise taxes and mess up the progress.

Posted by: eleven | January 20, 2009, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

I was able to skip over the constant naming of Carter as ‘worst President ever’ (despite the evidence of the last Bush administration being more than strong enough to lay title to that claim), but when I ran into this I just plotzed:
“Jimmah is a life long anti-semite…”
He brokered the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt! How the hell can anyone who does that be an anti-Semite? Wouldn’t an anti-Semite have, I dunno, supported Israel’s enemies instead of trying to broker peace between them. Or is it because he dared to criticize Israel. Well, as a practicing j-o-o myself (member of a synagogue, and I frequently get an aliya on Shabbat) let me inform you that it’s entirely possible to criticize Israel and not hate Jews. SEriously. I love being Jewish, I respect both Israelis and Palestinians, and I don’t hate. Try it yourself.

James Earl Carter was/is a total baffoon..okay so he was a nice guy, big deal..He nearly ruined our country economically, his Middle East policy was a disaster, his overall decision making was beyond stupid…He should kiss the ground that Bill Clinton walks on sinceit was the Clintons that saved the democratic party from complete irrelevance…So what Bill Clinton is morally vacant, his presidency was successful and as a result Bill Clinton helped more that “Jimmy the Peanut” ever can…

Reagan was one of our greatest presidents, because Carter was one of our worst.
I’m in my late 40s and remember the Carter misery index and voting, gleefully, for Reagan. And, he did not disapoint.
Something tells me that Obama will not be the president Reagan was.

Darryl:
As you know, the Left (most of whom haven’t gone past high school, and slept through that) does not know the difference between SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE. They do not know the difference between fact and opinion. They do not know the difference between emotions and issues.
As a result, they yell insults and then, when we don’t yell back, conclude they have won the argument, not knowing that ad hominem is not an accepted form of debate, and that we are not going to get in to a spitting contest with them as to who is the larger “moron” or bigger “idiot.” If they attended (and paid attention to) first year college English, they might get it and stop with the nasty name-calling, but I doubt they will ever move to that next step, for the simple reason that (a) they can’t win on issues, so they will never “play fair” and argue issues, and (b) they THINK they are winning arguments when they yell insults, (not realizing that we CHOOSE not to name-call back since that is not a proper debate format and there is absolutely no point to try to match them insult for insult. They will never give up their name-calling because that is all they have. Pathetic really!
[ Like those fools who invested in Madoff (never admitting that trees do not grow to the sky) it never ceases to amaze me how the Left NEVER just sits back and tries to analyze WHY we don’t call them names! Do they actually think that we don’t know how to cuss? That we don’t know how to name-call? [I often imagine that we could beat them at that too, but we know that subjective does not win arguments. (The folks who actually don’t know are to be pitied.) ]

I am weary over the endless parroting of the Regan/Bush Republican lie machine about how bad a president J. Carter was. I will remind you since most of you have bought into the propaganda, President carter is our only president who attained a lasting peace between two Middle Eastern countries. A great negotiator, exhibiting patience and a willingness to exercise power cautiously in a hostage situation that could have ended tragically. Carter did not receive credit for his efforts though the next prsident was happy to take all credit however undue.
You all migh also remember how our Federal Reserve raised the
prime rate to unheard heights during the Carter Administration unfirly, unwisely, forcing our economy into recession intending, some believe, to ruin the Carter Presidency because he was a “Southern outsider”.
Maybe all you shirt sleeve critics need a little sobering review of actual history before you write Carter off as the worst president. During the Carter Administraton our government did not torture citizens of foreign nations, it honored it’s citizens civil liberties, did not invade nations who had not attacked us, and led the nations of the
“free” world.
By the way, if you all review the video of Clinton/Carter from this morning you will clearly see Clinton turning away from Carter the moment Clinton saw Carter. The two may not like each other, but it’s Clinton who chose to diss Carter before Carter had an opportunity to say hello or not.
So, all you sour grapes people, pucker up!

Posted by: M. Powell | January 20, 2009, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

Carter (considered the worst President, and the least effective, in US history) is green with jealousy of Bill Clinton (the most popular President, and perhaps the best, in US history). Carter couldn’t handle the job, even though he was merely sitting around lusting. Clinton was able to juggle many things at once, and handle them all with excellence. Clinton is brilliance, Carter is dim.

Posted by: Ruth | January 20, 2009, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm

Since Carter is generally regarded as one of the best presidents of the last 50 years it is no wonder that he might choose to distance himself from Clinton. While Clinton was an adequate president, his accomplishments were all but cancelled out by his ill advised shenanigans with Monica Lewinsky. Hey, I like thongs too but someone in his position of authority should have shown more restraint. Suffice to say, this years election should be very exciting indeed and I look forward to the debates between the leading candidates.

Posted by: blue | January 20, 2009, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

I did notice this weeks ago and wondered why the press didn’t mention Carter was clearly standing away from Clinton at that lunch photo. The other Presidents are close together, he is clearly making sure he doesn’t stand too close to Clinton. I have nothing again Carter, but the man has to let it go. This kind of stuff makes him look petty. Clinton is very popular and being on the wrong side of the Clinton’s isn’t bright for a man who will surely pass on well before them.

M Powell,
I thin it you that need to review history here. Carter gave us a horrific economic situation. I ahve no idea how old you are, but iwas in college during his time. Interest rates near 20%, The hostage crisis was a huge debacle, he had transformed the military into a joke. Remember that ridiculous attempt to rescue the hostages? He made the country look impotent. All over the world, there was ZERO respect for the US. Countries like Libya believed they could do anything they wanted and that the US would not do anything.
It took Reagan to re-establish our place in the world.
The Eygpt-Israel accord was indeed a grewat accomplishment, but it was his only one.
He is the one who gave us the totally useless Dept of Education & the Community Reinvestment Act which was the start of today’s economic mess!
OH yes…he was a real “winner” !

As President, Jimmy Carter…
1) crippled domestic oil production and dramatically increased our dependence on foreign oil by signing into law the ‘windfall profits tax’
2) invited the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan through his feeble response to the Iranian hostage crises
3) presided over a rare period of “stagflation” in which both unemployment AND inflation were in double didgets
As an ex-President, he…
1) empowered North Korea’s nuclear ambitions through his naive diplomatic efforts in the early 90s
2) is an unapologetic supporter of Palestinian terrorism who embraces the narrative that all the problems of the Middle-East are Israel’s fault
3) the one thing everyone credited him for, his ‘Habitat for Humanity’ house building, has turned into a disaster, with the inhabitants of these dwellings claiming they are shotty, poorly constructed, and a breeding-ground for mold and other allergines
Jimmy Carter has been an unmintigated disaster; those who defend him are displaying their utter and complete ignorance.

stgeorgeschapel,
that’s why I prefer debating liberals on line. When you debate them in person, they proceed to raise their voice to drown you out, then rudely talk over you so you can’t get a word in. Then they conclude they won the debate because you just give up after they impose their rude and uncouth behavour on you.
There’s a saying: never argue with a fool, they will lower you to their level then beat you with experience.

The One/Oprah Annointed/Moveon.org/
MSNBC President sworn in.
Your side won, show some class. What’s
with the 2nd grade booing act…..grow up. Repubicans didn’t boo Clinton when he won, or when he exited office. But,
somehow, it’s supposed to be comical when a group of moonbats boo Bush as he
is leaving office on cue, as practiced.
Cute? Just stupid, and classless.
Carter has been the worst ex-president ever. He was perhaps one of the worst
presidents ever. Double digit inflation (whereas now it’s almost non-existent),
double digit interest rates (what is it
now?), double digit unemployment rates
(over 12% and 15% in many states), and
we had gasoline rationing (by license
plates). Not to mention his horrendous
foreign policy on most things.
North Korea and Carter bashing Clinton
on that issue. Remember?
Sorry, Bush came in w/a recession, he’s
leaving with one, and the economy will
get better, in spite of the govt.
He also came in and received non-stop
negative coverage from the media that
hated him, and made sure any and all
wrongs were magnified even more. Add to that our wimpy GOP lawmakers who were
more eager to be RINO’s (McCain) than
conservatives.
Bush made mistakes, sure did. But, he got
far more right, and history (real history not MSNBC or liberal professors of today) will judge him fairly, and better.
I wish Obama well, because I live here too. But, if that White House website
OBama Campaign 2012 starter is any indication, it’s going to be a long 4 years in Obama-Palooza Land.

What about Clinton agreeing that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? Bush only acted on the intelligence, (if Clinton believed Iraq had WMD’s shouldn’t’ Clinton have acted like the Democrat senate did in 2003?), the Iraq war is over, get over it. The economy only tanked when the Democrats took over congress in 2006.

Posted by: hello | January 20, 2009, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

No, Bush was NOT the worst President by any stretch of the imagination. He kept us safe and freed millions of people in the middle-East. Our economy was good for most of the time he was in office. The problem with the sub-prime loan issue started under Carter, was exacerbated by Clinton legislation and threats to prosecute banks that didn’t give more loans to people who couldn’t afford to pay them back, and finally came to a head when the Democrat Congress insisted that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were sound even though Bush and McCain BOTH tried to get more oversight for them as they saw the instability coming.
Now, Bush made some mistakes in his tenure…he should NEVER have supported the bailouts and he should never have supported illegal amnesty. But for the most part, he was a good President in other ways. Carter, on the other hand, was a total disaster. I lived through those years.

Peace and justice? I know you are NOT talking about Carter… He destroyed the peace process in the middle-East (Sadat was the only one who actually showed willingness and made progress), then Carter got the Shah of Iran taken out and helped the radical Ayatollah Khomeni take over. Then Americans were held hostage and wishy-washy Carter did nothing. Also, Carter always catered to Arafat (who was a liar and manipulator) and even when Israel gave up more and more…the PLO never were satisfied. All the while, Carter still bad-mouths Israel.
When Carter was in office, I was in high school and I feared someone might attack us every day because he was so weak. Also, don’t forget how he destroyed our economy–stagflation…long gas lines…those were some depressing days.

More personal attacks from the left! I guess when you have no facts to fall back on, it is so much easier to call people names or wish them ill. It is so childish but unfortunately a large percentage of our society today are very immature, very ignorant and are looking for instant gratification. They don’t want to know the truth if it conflicts with their preconceptions and they don’t want to understand that which is complicated. Sadly, personal responsibility has also been lost in this society. Everybody wants everything given to them. They feel a sense of entitlement without having earned anything. Such a sad state of affairs.

You know what’s sad? It’s that the media inflames partisan emnity by being so overtly partisan and looking to fan everything that happens in this world into a headline.
It’s the media that should go, and thankfully, it’s on its way out.

Jimmy Carter was obviously not the best President ever but he did keep the Peace, told the Truth, and didn’t break any Laws. You can’t say that about any President since. As far as the snubbing goes, it’s the media trying to make something out of nothing again. As far as the comment posted, there are obviously a bunch of sour grape Republicans out there and worst President ever – GW hands down.

If he had been president over the past 8 years, we would have attacks in every major city in this country. America was refered to as the Paper Lion throughout his term!

Jimmy “Blood and Guts” carter was the worst president ever. He busted up many big companies, costing millions of jobs. Remember the gas lines during his admin? They were almost as long as the unemployment lines. He sold out our most valuable ally in the Middle East (The Shah of Iran). He allowed our hostages to be held over a year with no response and he even accommodated the Ayatollah to come to power in Iran, the MAJOR reason we have radical Islam to deal with today. He personally caused the biggest depression ever, and then publicly blamed the American people for “malaise”. There never was a “misery index” until the Carter admin.
He gave away the Panama Canal (built and maintained by US labor and tax dollars) as an “ex President” he defends terrorist organizations like Hamas and dictators like Chavez and Castro, this pathetic tool of a man is DELUSIONAL, so are his followers (all 12 of them).

We still suffer from the bad economic plans initiated by Carter but the worst President was Clinton. We will not overcome Clinton’s foreign policy blunders nor the graft and corruption of his staff during any of our lifetimes. Even worse is that the least ethical from the Clinton term were the first ones Obama named as his advisors. Obama obviously feels unprepared to lead or he would never have crawled into bed with the likes of Rahm Emanuel, would never have named someone like Hillary to a sensitive post like SecState, his nominee as Treasury Secretary is either a tax cheat or too stupid to prepare his own return correctly… etc. etc. etc.

Bush II was a great president, much better than Bush I, and light years ahead of Carter and Clinton. Right up there with Reagan.
Obama however, until he clears up his ineligibility issues by providing proof that he is a natural born citizen, will never be considered a legit president. And since he already admitted his father was not a US citizen, there is no way OBAMA can be qualified as president. Two parents must be US citizens, not one. OBAMA fails to meet the Constitutional requirement. He must step down.

Stories like this one are why most people no longer trust the MSM in this country. They manufacture conflicts, embellish endlessly, and always put a spin on the truth. Karl Marx: I don’t disagree Carter turned out to be a bad President. I do, however, have issue with your reasoning (in that it is wrong).
Our SUPPORT of the Shah of Iran is what caused the radical hatred against the US. The Shah was as corrupt as Saddam (whom, ironically, we also supported for many years).
As far as Unemployment, you are obviously not including the Bush administration in your assesment.
And yes, please post some sources as to Carter’s unyeilding support to “terrorist” organizations. I’d love to read up on some of those (unless of course the only source is FOX News).

I think the press does stories like this because average people get off on them. Read the comments here. Everyone got a chance to say “Clinton sucks” and “Carter sucks.” If the media print articles with substance, the average person would have to write nothing, or else say “I don’t get it” and “That’s WAY over my head.”

They need to grow up and get over it already. We have more important things to focus on. If Obama can be courteous to Bush (when arguably, he had no need to be so) the least the Clintons and Carter can do is be civil to one and other.

A former baptisit minister that dislikes a hedonist is nothing to be surprised about. You would hope the two would have more forgiveness in their hearts that that. They should learn to forgive each other’s transgressions of the office both public and private.
What’s more sickening are the mindless, Bush loving trolls that despise Obama.
To quote a Texan from 2000, Leroy Hahnfeld from Fort Worth, “It’s our turn now, you’ve had 8 years and look what’s happened to this country!”
Well, the tables have turned….Republicans can now shut the hell up, get therapy and retire! The failed free market policies and failed tax policies have enriched the top ten percent of the country at the expense of the other 90 percent.
You need to accept the new face of american government, it won’t be just a white man’s world in the future. Power will come to the rest of the populus now, hopefully at the expense of FAT, BALDING, CHICKEN-HAWK, BIG TICKET REPUBLICANS THAT REPRESENT CORPORATIONS THAT SCREW OVER AMERICAN WORKERS AND DON’T PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE OF TAXES!
REPULICANS CAN SHUT THE HELL UP FOR THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS, go quietly into the wilderness now, read your bibles and pray for all the pedophilies that surround you!

I can’t believe some of the vitriolic comments here. Where do you people come from? Or it is just two or three of you who are making these assinine remarks about Carter and Clinton and the President and Mrs. Obama? It’s clear that the Clintons and the Carters had already greeted each other. So the discussion about that is moot. The polls say that President Obama has an over 80% approval rating. That means less than 19% would agree with some of the comments about him. There’s no way all of that 19% is here on this and similar blogs. That means some of you are representing your selves as more than one person.

Da verg, get over it already. Obama has been sworn in and IS the legitimate president – like it or not. I didn’t vote for him either, but I certainly hope and pray that he is able to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the US.
By the way, you are wrong about the US citizen requirement – if a child is born on US soil, he is a citizen – it doesn’t matter if his parents are legal, illegal, citizens or foreign nationals. Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a foreign national father. He meets the definition of citizen whether you like it or not. Even IF he were born on foreign soil (which he was not), having a US citizen for a mother automatically qualifies him as a US citizen born abroad (key word – US Citizen).

Listen: The Very FACT That Former President Jimmy Carter Stood About 1 Foot Distance From Former President Clinton Tells Me That There Is An Icy Relationship Between The Two Former Presidents.
Religiously or Spiritually: They Both Profess To Be Southern Baptists.
Politically or Partisanshiply: They Both Ran As Democratic Candidates For U.S. President.
Although They Both Come From The Philosophical LEFT–
Bill Clinton is More RIGHT-WINGED Than Jimmy Carter.
Which Tells ALL That Carter is MAD at Clinton Because Obama Appointed More CENTER-TO-RIGHT-WINGED CLINTON DEMOCRATS THAN CENTER-TO-LEFT-WINGED CARTER DEMOCRATS !
P.S. My Uncle Henry Cisneros Served As Bill Clinton’s Center-To-Right-Winged HUD Secretary From 1993-to-1997 (As ALL Should Know That Texas Democrats Are More Conservative Than Georgia Democrats).

Amazing. Apparently 98 percent of people commenting on this story read the headlines but were incapable of reading the story or were just too lazy to do so. Gotta get those predetermined slams in without having a clue as to what the story actually says. The headline, in typical network media fashion, implies, hey, this might have happened. The story indicates that there was no slight. Feel free to trash Carter for making a hash of his presidency. He certainly was in over his head when he ran into the foul cesspool that is Washington, D.C. But here also was a man who put human rights and decency above all else, even when it wasn’t in the interest of our greedy little pocketbooks. Not a man who made the sounds when it was convenient or used those words to support actions completely to the opposite, like those who held the office after him. No, Carter is a man who is truly what a Christian is supposed to be, and I say that though I have never been one myself.
Now, go back to squealing over Jimmy and Bill and even W., and don’t you worry about this one little comment. Just put it out of your minds, like you do the huge section of reality that conflicts with what your little minds can manage. Read the story. The facts are there. You sound stupid when you comment on it when you haven’t read it, just so you can get in some meaningless shouting.

Is anyone here old enough to remember Jimmy Carter’s presidency?? Inflation, unemployment and interest rates were all in the double digits. I will never forget buying a house during his presidency — a traumatic experience.
And this wasn’t enough — he boycotted the Olympics, followed by the grain embargo, and then the Iran hostage crisis, which ended immediately upon the election of Ronald Reagan.
Why does anyone listen to Jimmy Carter? He was elected only because people were mad at Ford for pardoning Nixon. He was a laughable president, and he’s been a classless, petty ex-president.

Posted by: Chris | January 20, 2009, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

Chris, your assessment of Carter is correct. I remember his presidency and it was like you said: high interest rates, the grain embargo, the hostage crisis and boycotting the Olympics. He didn’t hurt the Russians by not going, he just hurt a lot of U.S. athletes. And you are right about why he was elected and what he’s become.

Darrell
Carter a “Majorly Quality human being” Darrell? While his Habitat for Humanity work is worth respect, his anti-Semitic (no, I am not Jewish) leanings, and his elevation of the killer Arafat to a position of respect are two of the many mistakes he made.
Also, please give some examples of his integrity. A former president with integrity would not criticize sitting presidents, let alone do so on foreign soil.
He is still working on downsizing his legacy by continuing his dour and hateful rhetoric, while the evil W, his Dad, and even sometimes Clinton carry themselves in a quiet classy manner he attempts but can never pull off because he lacks one key ingredient – self examination.

#2. You Have A Foreign-Alien Natural-Born Citizen of KENYA Elected President of The United States of America: BARACK HUSSEIN (BARRY SOTERO) OBAMA.
#3. You Have The Son of The MURDERER Of U.S. President JFK; WHO HIMSELF MURDERED JFK JR. IN 1999 (IN ORDER TO GET THE REAL DEMOCRATIC THREAT OF ANOTHER KENNEDY WINNING THE U.S. PRESIDENCY IN 2000): GEORGE (LIKE HIS GRAND-FATHER & FATHER: HIMSELF A SKULL&BONER TOO) W. BUSH.
#4. You Have A “George McGovern” Liberal ‘Democrat’ Governor of Arkansas–Who “Cross-Dresses” Himself With A “Conservative-Democratic” Senator From Tennessee (AL GORE); Who Become Vice-President & President That Win The “Reagan-’Democrats’ BACK To The Democratic-Party in 1992 & 1996: BILL CLINTON.
#5. You Have A Very Far LEFT-WING Liberal Southern ‘Democrat’; Who’s NOT Only An AVOWED-GLOBALIST & Member of The “One-Worlder” (NWO) a. Trilater-Commission, b. Council-On-Foreign-Relations & c. Bilderberger “Group”–But A “Bought & Paid For” Rockefeller Bankster & Federal-Reserve-Slave of The World-Wide, Global & Religous/Political Ecumenical/InterNationalist Priests of Mammon: Ala The One-World-Global-Controllers of The World . . . . . . It’s going to be a long 4 years filled with spite and venom…we can find other things to argue about, this is crazy. Today should be a day of American pride and shame that it took so long for us to set aside racial devide and elect a person of color into office. Tomorrow, I will be scared to death of his policies that are to come, but today I am excited for a race of people who now know all is possible! God Bless us all.

Posted by: Karen | January 20, 2009, 7:42 pm 7:42 pm

well it all boils down to this: Carter is not for sale, he understands the david and goliath phenomenon in palestine, the innocent people that were forced from their homes so many decades ago, who have been living and dying in camps far away from their homeland, they have not been allowed to return, … and the Jewish state that was created, and Carter knows that the Clintons are for sale. Now just who do you think has the most money to buy them off?

Posted by: sanity | January 20, 2009, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm

Cater was the worst president ever to live in the White House. He degraded the office. He was a fool to boot. Clinton was a liar and a seller of snake oil. They damaged their party, but sadly, the Democrats never learned how to regroup and rethink, so Obama now just resorts to weak mottos such as, “Change you can Believe in”, smiles, and telling people what they want to hear. I consider this one of the sadder days in our country’s history.

I can’t believe some of the posts. Nothing like a sore loser for nasty comments.
On Saturday night, a federal judge ruled in our favor and blocked the Bush Administration from proceeding with the lease sale of 110,000 acres of Utah’s Redrock wilderness to oil and gas companies.
This is a huge victory for our nation’s legacy of public lands — and a final rebuke to the Bush Administration as it slinks out of town.

Posted by: LostDemocracy | January 20, 2009, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

First off, there’s no proof that this mutual dislike is real, and not just a total invention of the media.
Secondly, the idea that the Bushes were “classy” is ridiculous. Dubya was the most incredibly childish frat boy as a president.
Thirdly, Jimmy Carter is perhaps the noblest man to have been president, even though he wasn’t particularly effective as president. In fact, if his policies on alternative energy had been followed (instead of immediately reversed by Reagan), we wouldn’t be in Iraq today, and 9/11 probably wouldn’t have happened. Carter had a wisdom and foresight few others had at the time.
And, finally, for all his personal failings, Bill Clinton was a very good president, certainly better than either Bush, and REALITY proves it — it’s Republicans who ignore the economic reality of the failed GOP economic policies that have nearly destroyed our country.
Let’s just hope the Democrats can save America from the GOP follies that have nearly brought us to the brink of destruction.

The article says that this is a day for national unity. too bad the classless Democrats in the crowd didn’t get the message. Booing President Bush when he was introduced and singing the childish “Hey,hey, goodbye” song is certainly typical of the mentality of liberals, but doesn’t set the “new tone” that their messiah has asked of them. Research the former presidents actual speeches, accomplishments, their words. Then you’ll see how corrupt Bill Clinton was and ignorant Carter was. seriously, Clinton was doing Monica in the Oval office. How can he show his face. Then he lied about it. You can write to Obama until the cows come home it won’t do any good. The congress has about a 6% approval rating. do you think Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank care? Carter should resent Clinton’s rebuffs during the 1990s. Carter resolved the crises with North Korea and Haiti. In North Korea, Carter negotiated an agreement with Kim Il Sung, the father of the current ruler, Kim Jong Il, to suspend their nuclear research. Carter’s agreement stood until the presidency of George W. Bush, when he and his team of neocons decided to abanon the ongoing negotiations with North Korea, and they decided to return to their nuke research resulting in the explosion of their nuclear bomb. Carter also intervened in Haiti averting the need for military intervention. All of this took place when Warren Christopher was the Secretary of State in Clinton’s first term. In his second term, Clinton sacked Christopher and turned his back on Carter to appoint Madeline Albright — a hawkish eastern European who introduced a new era of belligerence into US diplomacy that resulted in the wag-the-dog scandal bombing of Iraq and interventions in Kosovo and Macedonia. Carter’s style of diplomacy is infinitely more sophisticated and internationalist while Clinton set the stage for neoconservativism and the emergence of the Bush Doctrine.

Obama is coming very close or has even exceeded in reminding and telling some hard homely truths to the american public. Unless and until america fully gets rid of the “malaise” that Carter honestly had stated in late 70s, which had cost him a second term, america will become a third rate power within the next 15 to 20 years. Britain had managed to stay on the world scene as a first rate super power for 250 years, but it was the first and second world wars that had sapped its energy. Since early 50s of the 20th century, America has been involved in wars in Korea, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan etc. and has lost its vitality to convince its foes about invincibility of USA on the world theatre.

Jimmy Carter did step all over himself during the Clinton years with his well-intentioned, but naive, diplomacy. He did the same during the Bush years.
Let’s just hope he hangs it up for the Obama years.
We already have had enough damage inflicted by Carter.
When he should have been doing something productive as President, such as bringing the United States into a world of energy independence after the first oil crisis, he was worrying about who would play when on the White House tennis courts. With his background in nuclear power, he would have been well suited to put the United States on the same energy course as France which now enjoys nuclear energy providing 85% of their needs.
What a waste of a very intelligent man.

That may be the case mickey but to sugest that George W Bushes ineptitude has had no bearing on the current state of the US economy would be ridiculous. I mean eight years of tax cuts sometimes more than one a year whilst continuing to deliver budget deficit year after year is beyond irresponsible. I restate the fact that i am not pushing any particular politacal ideal i am just an outsider commenting on the worlds perception of Bush. And you would be very wrong to assume that my countries economy is in shambles infact responsible and central economic policy is seeing my country weather the storm rather well.

Camo, no need to try to reason with the bozo Republicans. They are beyond reason. All they know is spite and divisiveness. They will never admit that W was an umitigated disaster for both this nation and the world. But if they want to wallow in delusions so be it. You know what they say, none are so blind as those who won’t see.
Anyway, the time for debate is over, we are free of their kind (for awhile at least), so forget them and let’s celebrate our release from the eight year nightmare.

Stammering? I find this an odd thing to say as Obama is often talked about as being a brilliant orator. Unlike someone else I can think of. “There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”

Carter graduated 10th out of 820 at the the Naval Academy and is the only one to become President.
All his personal businesses have made money.
He has and still does teach Sunday School.
He has spent his entire adult life fighting for civil rights.
He as spent 40 years fighting for US energy independence.
The truth is the US economy got dramatically worse for over 3 years AFTER Reagan got in. The economy was never fixed – Reagan just ran up colossal debts after promising to do just the reverse. Postponing the problems and making them much bigger.
So what is Carter’s big failing? Why does the media always try to smear him?
Well, he just won’t keep his mouth shut and let the Israelis finish murdering the Palestinians.

Posted by: Truth Truth Truth | January 21, 2009, 1:25 am 1:25 am

Both Bush presidents acted with Grace and Honor in the transition of power. Clinton, had his team act like the classless immature fools that they were. Carter, was overwhelmed by the presidency. He simply wasn’t up for the job. He continues to prove this by his behaviour. You can take the man out of the peanuts, but you can’t take the peanuts out of the man.
What strikes me as funny is day by day Obama appears to be adopting more and more of Bush’s beliefs. He went from out of Iraq within months, to saving the gains and getting out of Iraq and leaving it stable. He kept Gates as Defense secretary. He worked with Bush to get the Tarp money available.
I only hope he is as smart as many think. If he is, his party may disown him as he comes to understand the reality of the world rather than the specious and suspect beliefs of the looney left in the democratic party.
The reality is if the banking system fails, nothing else will matter. The government might as well fail. Complain all you want about Bush, but it was Barney and Chris carrying on with Jimmy and Bills policies that created the financial mess we now live with. Long live the CRA.

This story is stupid. The video does not show anything the parties did in the minute prior to the Carters being in the hallway. If the Carters and Clintons had spoken just moments before, it makes no sense to shake hands again.
That’s like shaking hands and saying “Nice to see you,” to someone you were just talking to minutes before.

He’s been blamed for everyting which was awful. Like Katrina. Give me a break. I guess if everybody craped wrong he’d been held acountable for that. What people did and said,(either part). Any takers as to who would win?

There was a book published a while back that described how Presduhdent Carter and his old lady behaved in the White House towards the staff working there. It wasn’t very complementry towards the Carter’s, in fact it described them as being pretty arrogant and rotten in their manners towards the staff. A couple country hicks risen to the high society level with their behavior as if they were a couple medieval royalty raised in the backwoods. While I did not vote for Clinton, I agree that he could probably be a pleasant conversationlist and the life of a party, all pollitics aside. Carter on the other hand was a squeeky mealy mouth simple minded politician who should have stayed back on the farm raising rotten peanuts for hog feed, or whatever they use rotten peanuts for.

Yes Jack Ford, you keep defending a president, who one can only imagine treating the highest office of your land like a cheap booth in a brothel. You think about what outside forces can make a corrupt and compromised president can do.
Just look at the U.S. economy and foreign policy and the legacy of corrupt and compromised leaders. Its not about liberal and conservative. you can throw that nonsense out the window. Its about integrity which the Carters possess and stand tall above all others, and the evil forces behind those who are corruptible.

Wow! All five of the worst presidents we have had…yes, I know Obama is the NEW president however, I am sure he will be following very closely in his predecessors footsteps. How can he not? Our government is so corrupt and has been for a long time. How is one person going to change that? Has anyone seen or heard about the NEW congress? Yeah, they were gonna clean things up right? Dredge the swamp, usher out an era of corruption … blah blah blah. Usher one out to bring in a new one. Now that’s what I call change we CAN believe in.

I am very proud of two important facts – I never voted for James Earl Carter and I never voted for George W. Bush. I am not to blame for putting either of the two worst presidents in history in the Oval Office. I’m also proud I voted for Ronald Reagan twice and that I only made the mistake, by default, of voting for George HW Bush once – he did not deserve a second look.

It’s fun to see two has been liberals snubbing each other. Other than the fact that Carter allowed interest rates to approach 20% and was truly incompetent, there are only two differences between them. Carter lusted in his mind whereas Clinton lusted in his pants and on a certain blue dress. Funny when you say “blue dress” two people come to mind Slick Willie and Janet Reno.

*He kept us out of war
*Facilitated the Camp David Accords (which still holds today)
*Installed solar panels on part of the White House (largely symbolic), Regan had them removed.
*After Office, has helped thousands if not millions of people around the world.

Dear Southern Man
It is good to follow the bible but bad to rule with its intentions. The bible was never intended to guild the people thru political confusions just a lead to allow people to govern themselves. When we seporate the two we get a better understandoing of how we should all be looking forward to a better life using the economy, the environment and the gifts that everyones ruler has provided to us. The bible was created with the best of intentions thousands of years ago and maybe applied to governments at that time. It has no direct applications to greedy politicians, thief businessmen, unfaithful husbands and wifes in washington or the ever depleating moral teachings in our schools today. If we got bect to the basics in the schools and stopped teaching about “My two daddies” we may be able to smarten up and give backbone again to our children. WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO OUR CHILDREN!!!

When each of you says that Bush and Carter are the worst are you just speaking about your own lifetime? As to those who quote polls that say Carter is worst of all time, or Bush worst of all time, I have to believe they are very limited polls, like friends and family or officeworkers. Polls limited to the time after WWII usually have Bush up top and Carter usually 4th, behind Nixon and Clinton. I don’t agree, especially when Clinton ranks high when the question is posed, who is the best president, but that’s what the polls show. Most of the comments are referring to polls that say WORST OF ALL TIME. This is misinformation. Consistently, polls of registered voters, academicians, historians, etc. (not bloggers), show that Buchanan, Pierce, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Tyler, Grant, Harding are at the top of the worst polls. Carter and Nixon make some of the polls, but time will tell and we will likely see Bush on these. My worst – Buchanan – secession, deficit financing, closet proponent of slavery. See the Siena and Wall Street Journal polls.

You’re a little off, yeetch, about Carter. His tested IQ is 176, which is 85 points higher than the IQ of GW Bush, as estimated by the Swanson/Crain system of intelligence ranking, which is based on use of language, academic achievements, et al. BTW, Reagan clocked in at 105. Clinton? 182.
Not that this means much when it comes to being a decisive leader, but your skewed insult to Carter shows only your clear partisanship and intense vitriol along with a willingness to make statements without the knowledge to back them up.

I wouldn’t greet either one of them, when they were Presidents I respected the “office of the Presidency” not the person in office. Kind of like today when I woke up I felt so sorry for American’s fooled and brainwashed by the media.
I again, respect the office but not the person in it.

anyone that believes that Jimmy Carter is the worst president in the history of the country has not been paying attention to George Bush in the last 8 years!!!!!! Get a grip people!!!!

Posted by: art feeler | January 22, 2009, 11:01 am 11:01 am

The Clintons have done everything correctly and have kept pettiness out of this entire election process- Yet still the media is trying to find fault with them- somewhere, someway somehow!!! Are the Carter’s perhaps jealous?? Pres. Clinton has, since leaving office worked tirelessly to raise world-wide attention and funding for Aids and poverty etc. Nearly billions of dollars+ Jimmy Carter thinks of himself as a one man world peace maker- And charity creator- Habitat for humanity is a great thing and so are the others but the Carter’s blatent snubbing of anyone who is working to make our world a safer and healthier planet should be treated respectfully! Is Jimmy Carter a true humanitarian or is he in it for the notoriety?? His negative antics are not very Christian-like or becoming a former President!

Posted by: Billla | January 22, 2009, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

i could care less.
i am a lilberal democrat from Texas (but that doesn’t affect my feelings on this issue)—President bush showed one hell of a lot of class. you could really tell he was genuinely happy and proud for Obama. and i’m proud President Bush and is wife and family will be making their home in Dallas.

Paul Wall, I am a Conservative from NH and I want to say thank you for your comments. You can disagree with Pres. Bushes policy but not his integrity. You must be a REAL liberal and a REAL democrat, not one of the pelosi/clinton/carter/reid/kennedy hate mongers. I call clear honest decent libs like yourself Lieberman dems. I disagree with damn near everything Joe believes politically but at least he believes it is best for America, and stands by what he said. I apologize for rambling I just wanted to say I appreciate your decency and honesty and more importantly, your civility.

This is gossipy little piece that does not deserve much attention except as an interesting little aside. I’m not surprised to see the plethora of Republicans running with it to demonstrate a dazzling display of sour grapes.

To Liberals scandal, and shame mean nothing, because they were born, and raised with it. One thing they are forgetting to remind themselves, if they are caught by “Islam, their heads will be slit, before any. Reference to my fact is “Daniel Pearl” Their lover, and own victim. Study the history carefully.
People who don’t know their past history tend to make fatal mistakes in the future.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the MSM have to say about Carter and Clinton when they’re lying in state in the Capitol (a very long time from now I hope). They’ll be severely challenged to find anything positive.
With either Bush they’ll have a hard time figuring out what NOT to say in order to minimize their achievements.

Jimmy Carter was a great President as history is beginning to confirm. It was that skunk Reagan aided by his emissaries to Tehran, the traitors Casey and Gates, who caused 51 US diplomats to remain prisoner from August 1980 to January 1981 – five months longer than originally agreed- so that Carter should be blamed, defeated and humiliated. Carter brought peace to Israel’s southwestern border with the Treaty with Egypt. He was a giant. His predecessor, Ford, couldn’t stand up without falling over something and his successor, reagan was the second biggest fool to ever occupy the White House. The worst US President (and biggest fool) has just left office, thank heavens.

Carter worst president??? Ever heard of George W Bush. No doubt the worst president ever. Period. I wouldn’t hire him to run a McDonald’s – forget the country. What a terrible mistake!

Posted by: Niles | January 23, 2009, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

I was hoping when I saw this possible snub that Carter would have an explanation, which he does. These 2 great good ‘ol boys go back too far to let a little thing like their both outspoken views about one another interfere with them being “strange bedfellows”. God bless them both and our newest hope.

Carter snubbed Bush this week by saying that “he has been waiting eight years for that helicopter to leave.” I think that Carter is a rude and sour old man. He is being disrespectful of anyone who has served their country. He needs to go back to Georgia and just go away and stp being a grumpy old man!!

Posted by: hater of bitter past politicians | January 23, 2009, 6:33 pm 6:33 pm

If George W Bush and Barbra Strestand can greet, shake hands and peck on the cheek…why can’t two former presidents have the common manners to acknowledge the each other. Is is a man thing, a dem thing, an ego thing, a I hate you so much I’m willing to look like an ### to make my point thing? You choose. I tend to agree with the previous posting….Jimmy is sour, bitter and mean.

I watched this snub on TV when it happened and couldn’t believe my eyes. Even if Carter and Clinton had talked earlier some kind of recognition would have been in line even a head nod but Carter acted as though the Clintons weren’t even there….just when I thought my opinion of Carter couldn’t get any lower, oh well he won’t be around too much longer.

This is pretty funny. My favorite part is the look on hillary’s face at the end.

Posted by: Robert | January 27, 2009, 1:18 am 1:18 am

Seems like the only people interested in this story are Republicans who are so bitter at their loss that they have nothing better to do than try and convince people that Carter was the worst president ever (a view that is not mainstream at all or backed by any reputable surveys or historians) and badmouth the new president when a few years ago they where crucifying anyone who dared speak ill about big Dubya..who will surely be seen as one of the worst presidents in history.
You guys are making mountains out of molehills. You are the petty classless ones. Get a life.

Posted by: Betty | January 27, 2009, 10:25 am 10:25 am

I still am mystified by the hatred Clinton evokes. I thought the 90s were a decent enough time. Much better than living under George Bush. And how can you say the actions of Carter and Clinton mean all Democrats are petty and childish? Does that mean all Republicans are incompetent and moronic because Bush is or just plain evil because Cheney is?

Posted by: scott | January 27, 2009, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

Come on guys it was obviously not a snub. Even if it was don’t act like republicans are any different.

Posted by: Adam | January 27, 2009, 2:55 pm 2:55 pm

GWB left good advice to Pres. Obama when he said that Carter was “meddlesome” and “a pain in the neck.”
Former Pres. Jimmy Carter is a holier-than-thou anti-semitic bigot, and I am ashamed that I was once a delegate for him. He really flopped, and now he keeps hoping for a “do-over” in semi-retirement.

Posted by: Maria Houser Conzemius | January 28, 2009, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm

Carter and Clinton now have a new kid on the block. That would be George W.
Bush – the worst.
I agree with Patricio Bridges the look
Hiliary face was priceless.

Posted by: D.N. | January 28, 2009, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm

I totally agree. Bush has had so much class through all of the liberal childishness. I will miss having someone with class who loves his country so much-and didn’t just begin to do so. I was brought up to respect the Presidency but do not have to like the presidential choice. Carter was not ready to be president, Clinton was a pervert and perjuror, Obama, whom we absolutely nothing about, is not ready for this position, and lastly, God help us, we are stuck with another Clinton. Many will be sorry for what they wished for.

i LOVE Clinton AND Carter.
i despise the conservative mindset
W was the worst president ever

Posted by: dennj | February 5, 2009, 6:34 am 6:34 am

“Carter publicly called Clinton’s last second pardon of ultra-rich tax cheater Marc Rich “disgraceful” and “attributable to large gifts”–which, of course, it was.” Well, what do we learn from this?? If your business or actions are, shall we say, less than legitimate, take a lesson from Rich and pay off the right people.

President Clinton was the best econonomy-establishing president ever. Look at the statistical data, his surplus numbers outscore any other president in our country’s history.
