Could This Be the Next First Puppy?
Could one of these two Golden Doodle puppies be the face of the new First Pooch?
President Obama has told daughters Malia and Sasha that they can have a puppy.
Two issues: (1) Malia is allergic, so they need the dog to be hypoallergenic, producing fewer allergens.
And (2) They want a shelter dog. With all the homeless pets out there, the Obamas think it’s important to not go the route of the pure-bred.
"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound," Mr. Obama told George Stephanopoulos a few weeks ago. A "medium sized dog, and so, we’re now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up." Both labradoodles and Portuguese water hounds are hypoallergenic, but neither is in huge supply in shelters, as far as I can tell from a quick search on petfinder.com.
"We’re closing in on it," the then-president-elect said. "This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary."
The Best Friends Animal Society, working with National Mill Dog Rescue, e-mails to say that Stella and Susie — two 4-month-old Golden Doodle puppies from Missouri, "rescued from a puppy mill, are patiently waiting at their foster home in Colorado Springs for a call from the White House."
They’re house-trained and, says Theresa Strader of National Mill Dog Rescue, “Stella is more laid back with a very sweet and outgoing temperament but happy to have several naps a day," while "Susie is a bit more of a wild child — very energetic and a bit nosy, but also very loving and sweet.”
Over to you, President and first lady Obama.

Golden doodles are VERY cute — would be a great dog for the Obamas!
Of course my opinion is slanted by my two golden retrievers..

The Obama’s have 2 daughters… Stella and Susie should stay together… let each girl have their own pup and each pup have their own girl…

I know they are not hypoallergenic but they are so damn smart, cute and personable…….I have to put in my two cents for Irish Jack Russells……they’ll make Malia and Sasha laugh out loud, a lot, while they are sneezing! No matter what breed/type of dog they choose they will come to realize that whoever said that money does not buy happiness, never invested in a puppy! Good luck with your puppy Obama family…….like other puppies, it will train you well!

I have two goldendoodles- a brother and sister- and they are soooo great. Also they entertain each other as playmates, so when I am at work they are fine. I highly recommend these pups for Sasha and Malia. They are fun but also are laid back and great with kids!!

These are NOT hypoallergenic dogs. They don’t exist. Of course the Obamas would probably drug up their girls on allergy meds just to prove a point.

We adopted a Goldendoodle this summer rescued from an abusive situation. My husband is the biggest dog person in the world but I had never said yes due to severe dog dander allergies – my eyes swell so bad I have been in the ER before. We had dogsat our neighbor’s goldendoodle. Both the neighbor dog and our new fmaily member have NEVER had a single impact on my allergies. Their personalities are so great – I know the first family would be very happy with an option like this.

They should keep an eye out for a schnoodle (schnauzer X poodle) We have one and they truly are a hypoallergenic dog and fantastic with both children and adults. They are a dog who will just sit and cuddle and then also chase and play for hours as well. Our dogs friendly nature and cute face is loved by all who meet her. You can’t go wrong with a schnoodle.

I have two three-year-old Goldendoodles and they are terrific dogs. Loving, loyal, playful, cuddly, cute, smart, protective…the total package. I am allergic to pet hair and, hypoallergenic or not, I never have had any problems with these dogs. The President would be wise to get Goldendoodles, whether they be these two adorable puppies or not.

Wow it would be great if they took both of the puppies. Then the girls could have one of their own. And they will have the best home ever.
I have a lot of respect for the Obamas for going the shelter route. A lot of people do not relize that you can even find pure breds in shelters. Its not always easy, but possible.
Please Mr. President your girls deserve a puppy each, and I as a tax payer am happy for you to use tax dollars to buy them and feed and take car of them.

The golden doodle is a great choice. I have one and he is beautiful…all 70 lbs of him! They are extremely smart and don’t shed. Extremely lovable and loyal. The Obama girls will fall in love with one. (So will their mom and dad!)

There are rescues for every breed of dog out there. Examples: Poodle Rescue In California also takes in Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, etc.
There is a Portugese Water Dog rescue, on next day pets as well.

Our pound recently had 5 labradoodles available. They were all adopted within 24 hours of being taken in by the humane society. I assumed that since the remaining 5 were less poodle and more lab, this is why they were given to the humane society, or perhaps the breeder got what he wanted from the litter and decided to let them go knowing they would be adopted. We have a “no kill” HS. Our little guy (one of the 5)is just adorable and we love him…could do without the puppy hassles but he is learning and quite intelligent and we realize it is just a breaking-in period. Keep looking, your puppy is out there!

Boy, once again the news entertainment weenies have hit the highlight of the day. Who cares what type of dog Obama’s want for a pet. It is not relevant to anything. This is more hype to make everyone love the Obama’s…sort of like last week’s story of Obama writing a letter to his daughters. What self respecting father would make public a letter to his daughters…Just like the Clintons…it is all a charade. Now give us some news…PLEASE.

Best wishes to the new first family! Kudos for choosing to adopt rather than purchase! These two puppies are adorable and I agree with others who have suggested that the Obamas should adopt both. Living with two dogs is highly entertaining — better (by far) than watching television!

Why is she not at the Presidents door protesting?? Have they already excused the war for President obama??

Tom Adams – Sometimes a little good news is better then constant bad news. We are very well aware of the dire economy and the ongoing wars overseas. Are you looking for the same sad news? If thats the case, why not go over to your local shelter and find out why all those people are now out of work and living homeless. Because the President that you so admired over the last 7 years have jacked us up. For some of us, hearing something warming is better then looking into our 401k’s or stocks and realizing that we just lost another 1k overnight.

BTW…In case some off you want to get sarcastic on why I said 7 years. I am very well aware that GWB was in office for 8 years but the first year after 9/11 he was on target to be a great President. Until he dragged us into a war with Iraq, failed to acknowledge Katrina and finally dragged our economy to the ground.

JIM ROD we have one war and Bush had two, Iraq should never have happened it was based on lies. Osama Bin Laden was our target along with Al Qaeda, no where in Iraq were these people found until after GW invaded Iraq. Osama Bin Laden is still alive and free, and bush said him self he ready did not care about that. Well the 911 survivors and families of the dead care about it. The American People after 9-11 stood behind GW when he said he would make those responsible pay, 6 years later we are still waiting. GW on Sept 11 at Barksdale AFB, Make no mistake, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.
GW to the Nation on 9-11…..The search is underway for those who were behind these evil acts. I have directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. Well what happened? Oh yes Cheney wanted war with Iraq and thought it would be a cake walk…. NOT. It is good to have some fun news instead all of the Bleakness we have had for 6 years. It is not going to be easy for Obama to undo the damage to our country but he has my support to try. God Bless Him and the US of A.

So, would it so wrong for them to take BOTH puppies? They ARE shelter pups, and we need to be in the business of taking care of our abandoned animals.
I am sure that the ASPCA and HSUS would agree with me. I, for one, am for giving both these little darlings the best “home” in our land, the White House.

Wow, some people are wrapped a little too tight. Yes, our country has many, many problems right now. These kinds of feel-good stories are more important than ever to give us a little break from the harsh realities we live with every day.
What I never understand is why people who aren’t interested in these types of stories read them in the first place. And THEN “waste” their time commenting on them. Why bring everyone else down? Seriously, take a breath and relax!

Some day I’d love to see a pit bull in the White House. That would really help change some ignorant people’s opinion of this great breed that has unfairly obtained a bad reputation. Unfortunately, they are definitely not hypoallergenic.
Posted by: Chris | January 21, 2009, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm
PLEASE TAKE BOTH PUPPIES
The poor little things have ended up in a shelter. To seperate them would make their life even worse. Keep in mind, they do not understand, or care about a great life in the White House. All they know is that they have each other. Also, the children would be delighted to each have their own puppy.
Posted by: Sharon | January 21, 2009, 12:45 pm 12:45 pm
So this isn’t a “political punch” piece. Lighten up. Hopefully this raises awareness that you can get “breed” dogs or cute mutts @ shelters and there are “rescues” for EVERY breed.
If wearing J Crew causes their website to go down, maybe Malia and Sasha getting a rescue dog will help push families looking for a new pet (hint: older, already “trained” dogs are available thru shelters!) in that direction. I hope people won’t adopt a puppy thinking it’s “the next big thing” since the first kids are doing it. But if people are ready for the real responsibility and over a decade of love, shelters and rescues are OVER FILLED and animals are DYING (being KILLED), due to financial straits.

I bed to differ. the statistics are against your comment. Pit bull attacks are not a matter of “if”, but of “when”. Even the most docile and well behaved pitbull will sooner or later turn on someone, including its own master. It is their breed, temperament and genes…beware. But it is people like you who put others in danger. Not only other humans, but other innocent dogs. Many a pitbull who has lived with other dogs in the household have turned on the other dogs in the houshold. In Dade County, FL, they are “outlawed”. Believe me, it is their genes, make up, whatever you want to call it. They will attack; it is just a matter of time. I know what I’m talking about.

Does every single aspect of the Obama’s personal life have to be aired in the media every single day … This country is in trouble and we have serious things to think about. While the Obama children are living in the White House and being sent to the finest, most expensive private schools that money can buy, we have children living in “crack houses” in this country with no food on the table at dinner time. If the Obama’s want to make a difference for this country, their efforts could be better spent creating a system where neglected and abused children are sheltered, protected, fed, clothed, and given a chance at a decent education. The dogs in shelters are getting better care and consideration than many of the children of this country. Worrying about getting a dog for the White House is so trivial and ridiculous … given the present state of our country.

I hope the breeder, shelter or some one with a little “dog” sense has explained to them that labradoodles have to be 2nd or 3rd generation to do any good for a person with allergies.

They should definitely take both the puppies and keep them together. They’ve already had a hard start to life so they would do better staying with each other. Two girls, two puppies … and plenty of places to run and people to take them for a run! Pure paradise for any shelter or abandoned dog.

People who have to comment negatively on articles they haven’t even read need to find something productive to do. It would be great if the Obamas adopted both of these dogs, and Michelle Obama has said the girls will be doing pooper-scooper duty, so no taxpayer dollars will be harmed in the acquisition of these pets. I’d love to see them adopted together, but any dog in the White House is never going to be alone!
Posted by: Sara | January 22, 2009, 9:40 pm 9:40 pm
Please take both puppies. These dogs are exactly what the Obama’s are looking for, shelter and non-shedding, hypoallergenic ( the most any dog can be). I believe that the Obama children will be better off with both puppies as it will teach responsibility and neither will have to the the favorite if there are two.

Please stop forcing dogs on the Obama family. As a mill dog rescue in the heart of the puppy mills in Ohio I can tell you that there is no guarantee that these goldendoodles will be hypoallergenic. What a sad thing to get a puppy and not be able to keep it because of allergies. What joy there is when a child goes off to pick their first puppy. Why take that away from them by dictating what dog they should adopt? Another very important issue to consider is that a 4 month old puppy that has spent those 4 months in a puppy mill is not a “regular” puppy; has been without important months of socialization. Please let this family and these two young girls have the right and the unforgetable experience of choosing their very own dog. I’ve rescued hundred of mill dogs and am a HUGE advocate for these special souls but rescues’ involvement in this very personal time for a family has no place. They’ve said they will adopt, why can’t we leave it at that.
Let them choose!!
Posted by: Martha | January 22, 2009, 11:58 pm 11:58 pm
Cute puppies, but I sure hope that they are not holding dogs in hopes that it will be the “Obama dog”. There are already severl shelters doing this and it is a shame. Keeping dogs on speculation is not working in the interest of the dogs. Give these puppies great homes now and let them get on with learning and becoming a member of a family (any family) now.
The Obamas just moved and have hardly had time to settle themselves int their new lives… adding a puppy right now would not do them or a puppy justice. Give them time THEN the right pup will be there for them.
Posted by: Becky | January 23, 2009, 9:04 am 9:04 am
Martha – I don’t think that ANYONE is FORCING anything on the Obama family. President Obama CHOSE to make public the fact that they are going to get a dog as well as the breeds they were considering. It is only natural that rescues/shelters who happen upon these breeds would want to let them know when one becomes available and it is my understanding that the Obama’s have people working on their behalf to help them find a dog and it is also my understanding that these people have REACHED OUT to shelters for guidance. As for the puppies not being regular puppies – of course, mill dogs can often be a challenge but these two are young and have been out of the cages for a period of time, appear to be well socialized and are already housebroken!
No dog is guaranteed to be 100% hypoallergenic so, Martha, are YOU telling them they should not get a dog at all?? Something tells me that due to security, the Obamas will not be driving around to all the shelters on Saturday afternoon so I think it’s wonderful that the shelters are coming to them. As a puppy mill dog advocate, I can think of no better way to educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills, pet stores and buying pets online and I think either or both of these puppies would be perfect choices for the Obama’s. You certainly don’t sound like a puppy mill advocate to me. AND TO THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T THINK THIS IS NEWS – just because you don’t care about it doesn’t mean others don’t. I couldn’t care less about college football either but it’s still considered news!

These two pups are very cute. And, it would be great if the Obamas decided to adopt both. We adopted our dog from a local shelter, and I wish at the time I had taken two because he would now have a buddy when we are out or away to keep him company. If you have the space, money and means to have two dogs…go for it. We love our rescued dog; he has the greatest disposition and his breed is not known for being outgoing and friendly. I think he knows he’s a lucky mutt, and so are we.

I just had to comment on the Obama family getting a dog.I feel that they should take both of the puppies, that way they will not be seperated from each other, And Malia, and Sasha would have there own puppies to raise to adult dogs. I have a toy poodle, and he is so loving and very smart. Poodles are very good with kids and even small baby’s.They love affection and love to sit on your lap. They love everyone that they come in contact with, They dont bark very much and they are easy to house break,They also love to play and they love car rides,With the age of my poodle now he sleeps alot more now than he did when he was a puppy,But he still loves to chase and play with his toys and and run around, If the Obama’s decide not to get the two puppies, I would suggest them getting a toy poodle, They dont shed and they are hypoallergenic. I think its great that the Obama’s want to get a puppy from a Shelter. There are just to many animals cats and dogs that have been placed in the shelters, Cats and dogs and other animals are like us humans they need a family and someone that will love and take care of them, They have feelings just like us.They hurt when we hurt, and when were happy they are happy, There are always poodles at the shelters were I live, They are so darn cute, and there small faces and little eyes will just tear at your heart strings when you look at them, as they look at you and say please take me home with you I need a family to love me, Just cant say enough about poodles, There great dogs, and a good companion, Good luck Obama’s on getting your first dog.

I am so happy about the Obama’s decision to adopt. I have two adopted dogs now – 1 very large Pit (100 lb) male and 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback female and I believe adopted dogs know they have been rescued and are ever grateful for it. I am like the gentleman who would love to one day see a Pit Bull in the White House to dispel the reputation of the breed – best dog I’ve ever owned! Smart, Gentle, Loyal and Loving. And protective when I need him to be. They will know the right dog for them when they meet it and be a great example once again. Thanks Obamas.

I am a 5th grade teacher at Falcon Elementary School in CO and a volunteer the the Mill Dog Rescue Network. My 28 kids wrote letters to Obama in November pleading with him to come to CO and adopt from MDRN. Today, we read the article about Obama’s possible visit to MDRN to adopt and the kids think Obama read their letters and are answering their request. The kids think they have made a difference and are looking for more causes to support. How exciting it was for them to think/learn that they can make a difference! Powerful stuff… :)

this hypoallergenic dog myth has been totally debunked by science. the only people who perpetuate it are people who don’t understand the issue.
excerpts from a report on NPR:
Finding the perfect pup could be tricky, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology contends, because there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic breed.
Shaggy dogs often get a bum rap, but allergens are actually in skin, not hair, the academy explains. The amount of allergen dander varies drastically from dog to dog — even within each breed.
“Please don’t believe the Internet that there is a breed or some variety of breeds that are going to be safe for you,” says Dr. Robert Wood, director of pediatric allergy and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, “because that clearly is not the case.”
Several studies have shown a tremendous variability of allergen levels, even within breeds, Woods says. One study published in the journal Allergy in 2005 found that poodles had a huge range in the amount of allergen dander found in individual dogs. One poodle was a very low allergen producer, while another produced 60 times more allergens — almost the highest of all the breeds tested.
One solution is to find a flexible breeder or shelter and take a dog home on trial. Wood says an allergy sufferer should be able to tell within two weeks whether the dog will trigger a reaction.

This is perfect. But why is always “a” dog. There are two girls and two dogs, so adopting just one is not an option. Besides, look at the two sisters together, how can they be seperated?? I don’t know, but I think the Obamas could afford two.

Remember these are first time dog owners. Thinking it is smart to put two puppies within a home with inexperienced dog owners is setting both the family and the dogs up for failure.
In addition, a person will allergies may do just fine with one dog, but when you start adding more dogs the risks go up greatly.
I work in rescue and there is no way that we would advise any inexperienced owner to have two at the same time. They need individual attention and training.
My rule is: It is far better to have one dog and wish you had two than to have two and wish you had only one.

They will not take two dogs I’m sure. It is just that NMDR has 2 Labradoodles that are in the running. Having adopted from NMDR I would be thrilled to see the Obama’s take one of these dogs. Not only great for the girls to have a dog from here, but also great for NMDR to get the publicity needed to get more of their dogs adopted to great homes!

Mr President & First Lady, I’m a big supporter of Best Friends Society and if I could have more than the 2 cats I have today I would adopt many more but my household can’t support more so I donate whatever I can to help these animals have a good life. Please consider taken both of the labradoodles because after all we should never break apart families ;)

As a pet sitter I have cared for all varieties of animals including a labradoodle. I say go for it they are awesome dogs and Amos is the best!

They should get both of them so each can counterbalance the other! I myself prefer the mini-goldendoodles, but hey the White House is huge so they will be fine with these dogs. My girlfriend has a Chihuahua, the cutest thing ever! But these dogs are great also for allergies.

I have worked in an animal shelter for the past 8 years and I would be disappointed in the Obamas supported the breeding of “designer dogs.” Just like all other mutts, regardless of the price tag you don’t know what you are getting. there is a good, no make that great, possibility that one or both of these dogs have aquired more golden retriever than poodle thus making them shed! These designer breeds are not, I repeat NOT, true breeds of dogs and the Obamas would be endorsing the reckless breeding of dogs for profit by selecting one, even as a rescue! If you want a mutt go to any shelter and you can find a ton! I encourage the Obamas to look on petfinder to find a porti rescue group, if that it what they truly want. Like others said before…inexperienced dog owners should NEVER adopt 2 dogs, and if they came to me for an adoption consultation I would recommend an young adult dog.
