Jonas Brothers Surprise First Tweens with White House Visit

ABC News has learned that after their scavenger hunt last night, First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama were paid a surprise White House visit by the Jonas Brothers.

The visit came after Malia, Sasha, and some of their friends from their new school Sidwell Friends saw two new Disney movies — High School Musical 3 and Bolt — and participated in a scavenger hunt in which they ran around their new home, learning about this history of the White House. White House ushers had organized a similar scavenger hunt for a young Chelsea Clinton when she first moved into the White House in 1993.

At the end of Malia and Sasha’s scavenger late-night hunt, they opened a door to discover their favorite musical performers: Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas — the pop boy band sensation who first exploded on the Disney Channel and also appeared earlier this week at the Kids’ Inaugural Concert.

They weren’t black so I bet they went unappreciated.

if they were not appreciated, they would not have gotten in.

the article did say they girls “favorite” performing artist.

Thats nice for the girls…new home, new area…probably not as cool being a Presidents kids in some ways as some may think. Im sure this helped them settle in a bit more. Im not an Obama fan, in fact its really scary how little people knew about him, but put the reigns of the worlds most powerful and FREE nation into his self -professed Marxism loving hands…kind of an insult to My uncle and grandfather that fought and died fighting Marxism in the 1900s. That said, these two young girls are sweethearts and its nice to see young kids in the white house again. I hope the white house staff has lots of fun things/surprises planned for them as they transition into their new surroundings.

Hey Tom…..what did you know about George Bush? Everyone wanted to have a bbq with him….and now 8yrs of bbq boy and you find the country in worse shape than ever, the country is hated in more muslim countries than ever before,I would say that the country is more apt to be hit by terrorists than ever before, the economy is dessimated, all of George’s pals have benefitted tremendously through The Caryle Group and the Patriot Act tramples on the very rights and freedoms your uncle and grandfather fought for,….
I bet Marxism will seem like a cool fresh breeze compared to the stench left behind by Bush and Co.
That said, I thought it was a wonderful thought to have the Jonas brothers show up. Believe me, those 2 kids had to have been bored silly going to all these functions, shaking hands with people they’ve never met.

Tom, how’s that capitalism working for you right now? The banks get “bailed out” while the working men and women get p*ssed on by their bourgeois masters.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!! You have nothing to lose but your chains.

When did we ever fight Marxism? Anyway, this man is leading your country, so be an adult and deal with it.

Hey Jake,
Since when does one refer to a 7 year old as a tween?

Posted by: Rebecca | January 21, 2009, 8:40 am 8:40 am

Let the girls have some fun for a minute for goodness sake. Nice of someone to put their feelings ahead of someone else’s for a little while.

That’s pretty cool. I’m no Obama fan, but I can’t imagine how positively surreal it must be for his family to be living in the White House. As someone who has moved an awful lot due to my husbands military career, I can relate to going to a new city and new house. Only, we didn’t have the Jonas brothers showing up for our girls, 24 hour room service or a media that wants to know every detail!

kevin, that is a really stupid comment.

Posted by: kathy | January 21, 2009, 8:51 am 8:51 am

That is a great thing to do for this little girls. I did not vote for Obama, but I respect the office and the tasks of running the country and being a daddy will not be easy. I hope they enjoy all the perks of being the President’s daughters. Nice touch by the white House to have these things ready for them on day one.

This is gross and inappropriate

Posted by: Kevin | January 21, 2009, 8:59 am 8:59 am

I’ll tell you what happens when you try to run America like you would a plantation….revolt. So you should be happy there is someone who is thinking about the poor before they come climbing through your window to TAKE what you have by force. You don’t have enough bullets to keep out a starving nation. You people are arrogant fools. and you sound a bit racist…but who cares. Simmer in your own juices.

Posted by: dana | January 21, 2009, 9:01 am 9:01 am

I course I’ll be an adult —- and show respect to the president. It’ll be more than the Left showed to Pres. Bush over the last 8 years. He can take it because he is an adult.

Posted by: Pattobay | January 21, 2009, 9:14 am 9:14 am

The Jonas Brothers wear Purity Rings and believe in abstinence. I hope these little girls will always have heroes like these guys, who were made fun of at a Music Awards Show by the host (Russell Brand) because of their abstinence belief. Of course, Brand is a former admitted Sex Addict, so what can you expect from him?

Pattobay,
Starving poor? Have you seen how fat the poor people are in America? Hardly starving my friend. Hardly starving. And, yes, I do have enough bullets. Let them come!

Posted by: shane | January 21, 2009, 9:20 am 9:20 am

I think this is wonderful and something that will more powerfully impact the girls’ memories than the Inauguration itself. Well done, White House staff!

Posted by: PSmith | January 21, 2009, 9:22 am 9:22 am

So much for the Obama’s shielding their daughters from the press. I’ve seen these kids on more magazine covers than Brittney, Angelina and Demi Moore combined. Will it be front page news when Malia starts her period? Inquiring minds want to know.

What a joke liberals are. They act like babies and deface monuments and disrespect the office of President. But the moment anyone questions anything being done that they support then you are racist or worse.
One other thing I noticed is you never see liberals take responsibility for anything. Of course Barney Frank and Chris Dodd had nothing to do with any of the economic issues we now face.
The other thing I will say is President Obama is going to give an address on ethics today. Wonder how that will affect the Clinton Foundation and the other democratic hacks who raided Fannie and Freddie Mac.

I think its a wonderful time for America. God Bless those 2 beautiful girls and keep them safe from the media!
I only wish that Obama was more thankful and appreciated how far this country has come. His speech was flat and empty. Our family watched and waited for an exceptional speech about life in American. How America has grown as a nation. How Martin Luther King had a dream that finally came true. How democracy is a blessing and takes time. Freedom doesn’t happen overnight. Its in America that dreams come true. Its in America that there is no room for excuses and through hard work and personal responsibility that you can be anything you want to be.
People can and will knock George W. Bush, which is a shame. Since the 9-11 attacks… he has promised and fufilled the promise to keep us all safe from another terrorist attack. Thank you “W”!
As far as the financial crisis, blame and sarcasm from the media is in the wrong place. PEOPLE created this financial mess! PEOPLE did not pay there bills. PEOPLE overextended themselves with outrageous charges to their credit cards. PEOPLE refuse to accept responsibility for buying things they KNEW they could never afford. PEOPLE were greedy and lliving above their means. It was the American PEOPLE , not the President, that created this financial monster. Until American’s that failed to fulfill their obligations of the credit they received accept responsibility and STOP LOOKING FOR BAILOUTS…. America will not survive this. We cannot and should not throw more money to people that have no intentions on paying their bills.
America needs to MOVE ON… forward… we need to suck it up.. face the losses.. and DEAL WITH THE DEBT.
Making false hopes, dumping money into a black hole, allowing people to keep a home they never should have had in the first place is INSANE!
You.. an American that has been living a lie… YOU are responsible… stand up and stop blaming everyone else.
Our government must STOP allowing tax write offs for bad debt. Our government must STOP making excuses for excessive spending. Our government must acknowledge that it too… failed to monitor and control the amount of credit issued by banks.
This will not be solved overnight. Obama is not going to wave a magic wand and all of your bills will disappear. YOU can do something for your country. PAY YOUR BILLS. Stop spending money you don’t have. Cut up your credit cards NOW! If you don’t have the money saved.. you can’t afford it… deal with it. Get a second job, a third job do what you have to do… stop feeling sorry for yourself. Minimum wages will pay bills too… you have to start somewhere! We as a nation have to start somewhere.
Today is the beginning of a new America… we’ve come a long way from slavery… lets not become slaves of our government. Concentrate on freedom from debt… and America will be a better place.

Kevin, cute racism there, but the Jonas Brothers actually have black relatives just as the Obamas have white ones, and otherwise. Welcome to the new America. Hope you can manage to enjoy it.
This is a neat story. :)

Its encouraging to see that the Reich-wing will seek out a news source other than the Fixed News Channel or Rush. However at the same time its pretty disgusting to see how morbidly stupid the few of you are who can break free of the pablum Fixed and Rush feed you.
Your love of all things Bush is commendable. After all only 22 percent of the nation approved of the lying creep on his last day in office. That is an approval rating lower than Richard Nixon AND syphillis combined.
To the moron who commented above “my tax dollars at work” I’d like to ask how the arrival of these kids at the White House affected your tax dollars (assuming you pay taxes)> Bush wasted $13 billion a month on his intractable imperialist occupation of Iraqnma. How do you square that with a couple pre-teens having fun in their new home?

Posted by: BenDover | January 21, 2009, 9:32 am 9:32 am

Hey Dana, this isn’t a “plantation” nation. Everyone has an oppurtunity to work and succeed in America. The problem is that some of those that you refer to as the “poor” have chosen to sponge off of those of us that work for a living. Those that have chosen to make welfare a way of life for themselves deserve no pity. Oh, and another thing, you don’t know how many bullets I and my friends have (big grin).

Folks – I am as conservative as they come and very concerned about the Obama presidency.
That being said, no one should be knocking the Obama girls. I want them to have a good time in the White House and I want them left alone.
Yes, it would help if their parents stopped welcoming People and other similar magazines to do stories on them but still, leave the children out of this.
I recall being furious at how Mrs. Palin’s children were targeted – the treatment of her children was inexcusable.
Folks on the right: Please do NOT behave the way the left has behaved – it’s disgusting.

saying this is “neat” story. wow, that’s almost as eloquent as ” awesome”. WHO cares!. Because Idon’t care about the socialist Obama’s does’t make me a hater. NOT drinking Kool Aid doesn’t mean we’re haters. Get over that. I see barry is sporting a flag pin? well well, why now? wouldn’t do that during the campaign. We don’t care about the Obama kids. That’s nice they had a party. BUT WE’RE NOT ON AN OBAMA WATCH FOR 48 MONTHS. jeesh

It’s amazing how people refer to Bush by keeping us safe after 9/11. What about before. The worst terrorist attack in American history happened on his watch. I’m so glad that he’s gone. It was an eight year nightmare for America. Obama has a huge task before him but 70% of the country likes him. So for all you hate mongers (30% of you) get over yourself. It’s over.

These two girls will get more publicity than any First Family – Barack and Michelle will make sure of it. Barack even had to publicize the letter he wrote them. They claim they want privacy for them, but not really. They’re brilliant when it comes to public image, and they realize how much the public loves to see children of “celebrities.” The more they can endear themselves with the American public and share their family life, the more likely he’ll get another four years in office.
As for the girls themselves, they’re just adorable. They’re futures as little princesses are set!
One thing I’m NOT looking forward to with the Obama administration is all the celebrities who will probably now be coming to DC. God, I hate the Hollywood “elite” – bunch of hypocrites.

Posted by: sydneyj | January 21, 2009, 9:55 am 9:55 am

Deana- it’s nice to see a conservative not attempt to trash 2 little girls! As for People Mag and others, they did grant 2 or 3 interviews. Why not the same knuckle rapping for the McCains who were on Peoples cover or the Palins? Just asking! Also, the Palin children were never targeted. One was pregnant, questions would be asked. I can only imagine the conservatives response if it had been one of the Obama girls! Double standards are the norm with some of them. That being said, GWB wasn’t trashed until he started making decisions that put profit of friends and the rich first and not the country! Not sure what your concerns about this Presidency are considering I see the Republicans falling over themselves to say they are in talks with the new Pres, and what the Democrats are proposing is and I quote “Oh, my god!” (bailout) in case you didn’t follow the news.

From what I recall….. The Clintons were at “watch” before the 9-11 attack!. We all know Bill Clinton was very busy in the Oval Office tending to personal matters rather than protecting this nation from harm.
Lets pray that Obama does not make too many sudden drastic changes in America’s Security and we remain safe under his ‘watch”

Posted by: Susan | January 21, 2009, 9:57 am 9:57 am

Attention: Obama hasnt done ANYTHING yet. your Obama-maniacs are so blinded by ignorance and hate for Bush that the truth and guilt being suppressed is astonishing. Bush was friends with Saudi’s and the conspiracy theories starting rolling. Obama has more crooked friends than a Soprano yet there is no problem with that. I personally like the man, but the love-fest and lack of inquisition regarding his scandalous past is pretty pathetic.

Susan – you are wrong. Productivity in the US is the highest it has ever been, but salaries have stagnated since Reagan. Deregulation – the mantra of the right – has allowed corruption to soar to the worst it has ever been. That has resulted in the financial mess – not the people. The corrupt ARM loans recommended by Greenspan were junk and a rip off.

From what I remember Bush had more than 50 warnings about 911, and ignored them all. He was vacationing for a month when “OBL determined to strike in the US” memo was given to him. What did he do? Should he have called Clinton?

Posted by: Tab | January 21, 2009, 10:06 am 10:06 am

Bush didn’t let people drown… I recall Mayor Negan was in charge. I recall MAyor Negan let the buses sit there while people had no way out of town. LOCAL government is responsible for what happened in New Orleans.
We all learned a lesson from “Katrina”… lets just pray we are prepared for the next natural disaster.
Lets also not forget how many people REFUSED to follow instructions and stayed behind regardless of the danger.
GOVERNMENT is NOT the answer to everything… how about some common sense…
I suppose you’l lbe one of the first one’s to blame President Obama when the next natural disaster hits – or- God forbid the next attack on America….. right? Come on… grow up already!

Posted by: Mike | Jan 21, 2009 8:32:26 AM quotes “…I would say that the country is more apt to be hit by terrorists than ever before,…”. How do you figure? We were attacked because our previous Democratic leadership decided to do nothing about the terrorists throughout the world that were looking to destroy us as a nation. So Pres Bush comes along and does something about it and you still whine like a baby. At least he had the guts to do something, unlike Pres Clinton who did nothing after NY was attacked the first time. The only reason we haven’t been attacked again is because of what Pres Bush has done in the years since. Like it or not, he fulfilled his promise to the nation to keep it safe from further terrorist attacks. And as for the economy let us not forget it was the Clinton administration that opened the banks’ floodgates to provide money to those they knew could never repay it. The only fault Bush has in this is that he didn’t repeal it (if he even could have) and force banks back to loaning money only to those who they know can repay it. Selfish Americans have gotten us into the mess , let’s see if those same Americans are willing to sacrifice to get us back to where we once were, or if it’ll be more of the same sense of entitlement.

Could everybody just put the past in the past and move on already? Yes — he hadn’t done anything yet — *because he was JUST inaugurated.* Give him a few days, okay? He’s already in the process of closing Gitmo.

Posted by: Am | January 21, 2009, 10:12 am 10:12 am

I suppose that President Clinton is not to blame at all for FORCING Banks to loan money to deadbeats for houses they could not afford?
We have learned…if you can’t save at least 20% to deposit on a new home, car, or purchase… then YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT!
Banks and business have been burned by our government…. no more loans to deadbeats!
End of story!

Posted by: Worried College Student | January 21, 2009, 10:16 am 10:16 am

Oh yeah… closing Gitmo will change everything…. come on already.
I suggest we send those terrorists to your hometown. You can watch over them, you can pay for their trial, and when they get off… you can let them move into your house. You can hold hands around the campfire and sing happy songs together too!
If I had the option… they would have been killed on the battlefield.
Then we wouldn’t be discussing this…. but… we are a compassionate nation. With all of our faults… this is the BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

Posted by: DownriverDem | January 21, 2009, 10:23 am 10:23 am

I agree Tom.
I think it was also sweet that the Bush twins left a special message for the Obama girls. I can’t even imagine how much fun the first few days will be for the girls exploring their new home, wondering what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do, having the White House chef’s make their favorite foods and snacks… and of course… having a bunch of people to help with their homeworks from school!
My biggest concern is the media. I hope Michelle and President Obama will not allow the media too much access to the girls. The girls deserve to grow up innocently without ridicule or pressure from the media.
Let them be kids. Lets watch them grow and love them as we would our own children.
The media has more than enough nonsense to chase after… LEAVE THE GIRLS ALONE!
Now… I wonder if thet’ll get a Barbie Doll White House to decorate?…. hmmmmm.. There are some absolutely stunning African American Barbie Dolls that deserve some recognition too!
You Go Girls… have some fun!
God Bless the children and keep them safe! Lets pray that the media backs off!

It’s so sad…after 8 years of one of (if not THE) greatest failure of a president this nation will ever see, the right wingers are still angry and whining over any little mention of PRESIDENT Barack Obama. It’s that kind of foolishness and idiocy (i.e. one governor from a far north state) that has decimated your party. Based on the kind of attitudes I see from some of you here, your party will remain decimated for the next 40 years or more.
To Bush’s credit, he did work with the transition gracefully, and for that he should be respected. However, that in no way makes up for the pile of feces large enough to fill the Rose Bowl that he created. You wingnuts can continue to sing his praises all you want. That won’t improve his legacy when the history books are written.

I agree some of you people need to get over yourselves. As the saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day” it took time to mess things up, it’s going to take time to try and repair things. For all of you who didn’t vote for Obama, if you can’t support AMERICA and what it stands for since he is now THE PRESIDENT go live somewhere else. As far as the girl’s are concerned-yes they are in the media because this is newsworthy and sometimes it’s nice to dwell on “fluff” items rather than “bummer” ones.

I seem to remember that the keyboards were trashed, furniture destroyed, lots of items stolen from the the White House. I am proud that President Bush took the high road and greeted President Obama and his family in a warm and friendly manner. Posted by: Joesnopy | January 21, 2009, 11:10 am 11:10 am

This was very painful to read some of the above post. How did a story about the girls lead to such bitter comments? I am all for free speech and everyone should have their say but choose a better topic to attach them to. I am a mother of a five year old girl, and she has watched us follow this election and knows that this is a big deal to adults. But an article like this makes it a big deal for her. She is learning more about the President and the election at age five then most of us knew before we were able to vote. So please do not use the human interest stories that children can enjoy to share your closed-minded views. You have a million others to choose from.

I agree PDM… itwas a disgrace to America the way the Obama supporters acted yesterday.
Even more disrespectful was Joseph Lowery’s prayer… what the heck was that? Whoever approved it, within the Obama administration.. should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY!… Not only were his comments racist… but they were the most unpatriotic and disrespectful words spoken during a Presidential Inauguration.

Do you know anything about politics?? The “religious right” loved Sarah Palin and the only reason McCain didn’t lose all 50 states is because the GOP religous right came out to vote for Sarah Palin who is a born again Christian. Get a clue before you post again.

What a wonderful treat for the girls!
pdm etc — you don’t have to be a Democrat to be happy Bush is GONE. Some people are just happy they get their country back. People from ALL backgrounds, not just Obama supporters or Democrats. Keep the partisanship to yourself.
As for the “how Clintons staff left the WH during the transition” — I thought that was pretty much proven to be exaggerated. However, if it is true, I’d rather a few keyboards be trashed then our entire Democracy. Thanks W!

Changing gears from constant Bush bashing (including teen daughters) to light hearted stories about how celebrities are visiting Obama’s daughters.
And liberals complained when McCain showed an ad with Britney Spears and linking Obama to mere celebrity and now it appears that he was so correct. Oprah, Jonas Brothers, etc. It is just a cesspool of Hollywood-produced garbage.
(Yeah, I know Oprah is in Chicago but whatever.)

It’s nice on the Jonas Brothers part to even join in this stuff when I know that they are conservatives. Another example of how much they love their fans :)

But what a nice surprise that must have been for the girls to end up with their favorites, the Jonas brothers! I’m just loving the fact that these kids are experiencing never-to-forget moments in their young lives!

The Jonas Brothers actually do a ton of stuff for Charity’s (one of them being their own that 10% of their earnings go too as well as Nick bein an embassador for juv. diabetes) I would be VERY suprised it if cost the taxpayers anything…and in fact they have performed/visited there several times during the Bush administration…AND they have met the Obama daughters several times before and consider them friends. Now…playing at the Kids Inauguration Ball, well if other stars such as Beyonce/Miley Cyrus/Jamie Foxx were paid I’m sure they were too, if not they would have followed suit.

Amazing how the Left is ragging on Bush as being one of the worst Presidents ever and yet, if you look at any time line, the economy and the nation as a whole was doing incredibly well before the Dems took control in November 2006. Since that time, the country has slid into the mess we are in now and these same educated idiots are now telling us how to fix the problem they created! This CONGRESS is the worst of all time. Bush may have made some decisions unpopular with many (including myself) but he was upfront, honest and believed in his cause. I for one will miss him greatly. Thank you President George W. Bush for your devotion to our country.

Hey Mike, I hate to be the bear of bad news for you but Muslim countries, European countries, and the like have ALWAYS hated America. So no it was not Bush who caused this. Get real! These countires will go on hating us today, tomorrow, and for the rest on enternity. I for one could care less about how the world feels for us when we have been the world’s savior time and again. In fact a good sign of leadership is probably best served with who dislikes us most. I do not believe we need to bow down before the almighty altar of the U.N. to receive blessings on self preservation and defense. They hate us because we are successful, brilliant, free, and most of all prosperous. Get your history in order prior to posting….please.

Try the truth -
Your memory of quite a few things is a bit . . . faulty, I’m afraid.
I simply do not think it is appropriate to target the children of political figures. It is base and cruel, regardless of which side it comes from.
And yes, leftists DID target the Palin children. Google Bristol Palin and then come back and explain story after story about whether or not Bristol was the mother of Trig, whether Bristol engaged in underage drinking, whether or not she used birth control, and so on.
Also, you appear to be a reader of People. I confess I don’t subscribe to the magazine but when did the Palin family ever invite People magazine into their home to follow them around and photograph their children? I’m just asking – perhaps it did happen and I didn’t see it.
Now. Please spend a little bit of time reviewing the news stories from 2000 forward. Your claim that President Bush “wasn’t trashed” until he “started making decisions that put profit of friends and the rich first” doesn’t hold water.

Bush shouldn’t go down in history as the worst President ever, but he probably will. Not because of the facts, but because our liberlay biased media and educational institutions dont print or teach the truth. It is a travesty that will come back to bite the dumbocratic party too.

Hey Brooke and all you other closet racists who want to blame the mortgage mess on lending to minorities, explain to me how:
1. ~ 65% of all mortgage foreclosures are on refinances which are not in any way, shape or form associated with the community reinvestment act
2. investment banks (such as Citi Mortgage) could not participate in CRA
3. ARM and interest-only loans are not allowed under CRA programs
Yet you and the other right wingers want to blame Clinton for “FORCING Banks to loan money to deadbeats.” Nobody forced these banks to underwrite the refinance loans to middle and upper-middle class so that they can drive that new Hummer or have new granite countertops. The government didn’t burn these banks their own greed burned them. But what else would you expect from an economy that has completely lost the ability to manufacture value (i.e. turning a $5 piece of steel into a $100 door). Instead the US was led to believe by fantasy-driven, Reaganomic politicians that manufacturing wealth through financial servies was the way to a strong economy. Well guess what when you exclusively deal with paper gains/losses these can evaporate overnight because they have no intrinsic value. What we have witnessed is the result of Reaganomics.

“1. ~ 65% of all mortgage foreclosures are on refinances which are not in any way, shape or form associated with the community reinvestment act”
I dont see why thats true. Could’nt you get a loan and then get into a position where you refinanced?
And on the flip side why are 35% of the foreclosures not a problem?

Ha! It’s been so surreal seeing these half mil homes with signs in the yard. All the gated community dwellers who work for P&G, GE, DHL and the rest having to sell off cars, boats. One couple i know in passing through mutual friends has simply disappered. He was a broker, and they were living large. Poof, phones are turned off, house is dark. Point is, these aren’t minorities. these are the assumed well-heeled. These are people who now we know, were not living within their means, and who are less rare than the news is reporting.

Really, Noelme? I mean, really??
You HONESTLY believe that the ONLY reason the U.S. has not been attacked is because the enemy has chosen not to do it?
You HONESTLY believe that the same people who attacked us in 1993 and spent the next eight years planning and scheming and financing efforts to carry out September 11th simply attacked us on September 11th and then decided, “Well, that’s it. We just wanted to make this little statement. We’re done.”
Do you read?
Do you listen to the news?
Do you ever listen to what Ahmadinejad has to say?
Are you following Iran’s efforts to achieve nuclear weapons capabilities?
Or what about the millions of other fanatical Muslims around the world who demand the death of Israel and America?
What about the fanatical Muslims in Europe who blew up metros in Spain and England?
You honestly think that these people are done???????
If President Bush was as horrible as everyone on the left claims he was then how do explain the terrorists’ “choice” not attack us?
My God. If we actually have people in this country who believe that we have not been attacked here in the U.S. because the enemy just “decided” not to, we are in terrible, terrible trouble.

Noelm and Deanna -Yes, we were attacked on Bush’s watch nine months into his presidency, after he had ignored prior warnings and after he took an astounding number of vacation days the first months into his presidency. Yes, many of his actions while president hurt our national reputation and created many, many new enemies. HOWEVER, I do think Bush was instrumental in us not being attacked again and agree that if the enemy could have attacked, they would have. I can only hope that President Obama will be proactive in our security and from every indication that I see so far, he will be. While he might want to open up some lines of communication with countries that have been shut tight for years now, I also believe he will defend us and protect us with force if need be. Time will tell.

Allie -
Every single morning, the president wakes up and is given the PDB which outlines the newest threats and concerns from an intelligence and defense perspective.
Think about that. Every single day, the president is told about new threats many of which are hard for the CIA, the NSA, and the other intelligence agencies to assess properly because, well, it’s the nature of the beast. Few folks who wish to do us harm send the President a letter and let him know the details of when, where, how, and so forth.
So, I guess in your point of view, President Bush and the folks in his administration and the intelligence agencies were supposed to somehow “know” what those 19 men had in store for us.
That’s fine if that is what your expectations were for President Bush but then it is only fair if we have the same expectations for President Obama.
Personally, Allie, I don’t expect President Obama to divine the tea leaves and figure out beforehand what our enemies want to do to us. It isn’t fair to expect him to do that! I simply want him to further strengthen our military capabilities and our ability to make it as difficult as possible for crazies to come over here and try to kill us.
I pray that what Obama said yesterday about defeating our enemies is a true reflection of what is in his heart. I hope he quickly comes to realize that talk and diplomacy have their places but they are very limited tools and we had better have the ability and willingness to use additional tools when our well-being is at stake.
Deana
P.S. A very small correction: we were attacked a little over seven and 1/2 months into President Bush’s presidency. Not nine. Remember, you start on January 20th of 2001.

Allie08,
Who are the new enemies? We still have the same allies. We still don’t get along with the same dictatorships we haven’t gotten along with for decades. We were never friends with terrorist groups as much as Clinton tried ignoring them. We don’t have any new enemies, we just roused them from out of their caves so we could kill them before they killed us.

At least get the quote right Susan:
….”help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.”
As a white atheist male, I thought it was a great prayer. A nice bit of levity to finish what had been a very formal and serious ceremony. If you think prejudice is dead, you don’t know many minorities. White’s (and particularly white males) still control the vast majority of the western world’s wealth and power, and partially as a result are far too predisposed to greed and indulgence. I stand guilty as the next man, and endeavor to improve. I also give a man who lead the peaceful march from Selma, AL knowing he would be beaten bloody by the white state police, whose property was illegally seized by the white government of the state of Alabama, who led the boycotts after Rosa Parks arrest, a little latitude to give us a bit of a ribbing of our collective past actions.

Americans do not have a problem. They ARE the problem.

First, Obama is no “Marxist”–the only people who say this are people who know nothing of history or political theory. Ignorant fools, in other words.
Second, Obama IS black because the laws in this country have ALWAYS defined black as a person having ANY black blood; this is why mixed race people were still sold as slaves in the South.

Posted by: andyk | January 21, 2009, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm

Hi Kekoa -
I do not deny the significance of President Obama’s election given our country’s racial past. And I can’t say how delighted I am that a strong, educated black family may serve as a role model to all families but particularly black American families given the extent of broken families in black America.
I recall how Mr. Cosby was lambasted for wanting more out of black fathers and demanding greater parental involvement in their children’s education. And what do we do? We elect the Huxtables to the White House. All politics aside, I love seeing the Obama family together. It sends an important message to all American families.
However, it IS interesting that a big reason President Obama is where he is today is because of his mother and her family. His father just wasn’t around.
It says a great deal about the importance of mothers and grandparents but it doesn’t diminish the vital importance of fathers in the lives of their children. Obviously, President Obama intends to be very present in the lives of children and that is something I applaud.

Hey Deana, First of all, Obama talks like a socialist, I know enough about history to know that. He is may not be full on Marxist but a socialist is bad enough and he clearly is a socialist.
Second, no law defines anybody in as black, white or anything else. Only colleges and democrats do that.

“Second, no law defines anybody in as black, white or anything else. Only colleges and democrats do that.”
Christine, sounds like somebody needs to open a history book. In many states in the first half of the 1900s (and long before) segregation was written into law. One set of rights for whites, one set for blacks. If you were 1/16 black, you were black by law. One black great-great grandparent made you a second class citizen, or before 1863 not a citizen at all.
Kekoa, if you read Obama’s books, you would find he agrees with you (contrary to what talk radio and Fox would have you believe). As a boy he held his black father up as an ideal (source of a lot of the out of context quotes about his identifying himself as a black man). As he grew up he eventually realized his father was a looser who walked out on him, and that he was what he was because of his mother and grandmother. That he is the son of a single working mother (regardless of her race) is at least as important as his black heritage in my mind.

Posted by: Rob | January 21, 2009, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

What a crock of mess this all is. If he wasn’t in the spot light most of you wouldn’t care if his white heritage was embraced or not. All that you would see is a black man. BUT now all of a sudden, in an effort to tear down a victory and success that is well deserved, you go fishing for whatever you can grasp a hold to. Give me a break and grow up. This nation is moving on and growing into bigger and better times. White, Black, Asian, whatever the race we all bleed the same blood, have the same problems and want a good quality life.

Pres. Obama run as a candidate of all Americans, he purposedly avoided the stereotypes and labels. Moreover, he was elected by a strong coalition of Americans of all races and colors. However, the media has created this show in which mostly African-Americans are shown and Oprah, Beyonce,Spike Lee, Denzel Washington etc, etc are all over and quite frankly it has been a bit annoying. What I mean is they are showing only one side of the coin, leaving out all the millions of non-black Americans who have also made history and have been kind of left aside.I feel that sometimes it was too much for Pres. Obama himself and he would have prefered a more balanced celebration and btw I am pretty sure he and his kids were very happy with the J. brothers.

I will show their father the same respect the media and the left showed George W. Bush the last 8 years, but leave these kids alone. It’s not their fault their father is a socialist who’s views make the founding fathers spin in their graves faster than the turbines in Hooverdam.

I personally think the only think African American about Obama is his wife. His mother was WHITE, he was raised by a WHITE grandmother. So, I wish everyone would stop saying he is the first African American president. He is just another WHITE president, and we will see if his policies really help all the African Americans who were dis-allusioned into voting for this guy. So, now is time to stop giving great speeches, and now he has to actually do something!!

Obama is not technically president. He never said the oath as it appears according to the law of the land. Albeit a mistake of a word or two on the part of the Chief Justice, it remains a fact that Obama never took the correct and requisite oath that he is supposed to take.

Actually, the law of the land confirms the president at noon on inauguration day. the biblical thing is there just to appease the christian believers.

ERIC you better get your facts straight. According to the transfer of power it happens at noon on January 20th regardless of anything. The oath and pomp and circumstance is tradition, not mandated by the constitution. Oh by the way how is the RNC???

You know what they say about ‘always a critic’ These are people who never have anything good to say (or do) because they are too busy criticizing people who are successful. Give me a break- I’d be really curious to know if George Bush and his Daughters were targets for your venom? Or are you just mindless pessimists? Just shut up and enjoy the ride- everyone else doing the work and making our world a better place while you kick back and judge.

I would love to see all these people who are putting President Obama down do anything other than bitch & moan. President Obama has done more already than the wonderful Mr. Bush did in 8 years. I, for one, am very pleased to have Barack Obama as our President!I believe He & His Wife, Michelle are two very smart people & that he will do soooo… much good for this country. Heck, just picking Joe Biden as his Vice President showed his intelligence. Look who Bush had! Not to mention the idiot McCain had picked. Oh well, before I start sounding like so many jerks who sent their comments in, all I really want to say is that I haven’t been able to say how proud I am of this country for years & years. Now I can!! Thank you President Obama, for restoring that pride! Please stay safe & take care of those beautiful little girls! Girls, have a blast!!

Posted by: Candy P. | January 21, 2009, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

Obama is African American. His father was African (Kenya). His mother was American (Kansas). His paternal grandparents African arabs ancestry. He is a true African American. Black Americans need to stop calling themselves African American. They are Americans.
Obama is a grown man. If he prefers to be called African American so be it. Tiger Woods chose not to be called African American. To each his own. They are happy with their identity

Posted by: Peace | January 21, 2009, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

I am amazed at how schoolyard knee jerk these comments are from both sides. You watch that amazing inauguration and then realize Obama has you to govern.. we are in serious times!!
Some one said Europe hates us because we are more prosperous? Have you been to Europe?? How many people who criticize Marx actually have read his work, and can separate it from Stalinism or Communism?
I’ve got a lot of good conservative friends, and have a blast walking them through the Marxist concept of worker alienation and problems with mass production, they love it and agree wholeheartedly! Then I tell them its Marxist. Uh OH! Its dangerous business fixing capitalism, and just because communism sucked but we can’t hold on to our system so tightly that we ruin it.
Denmark has the happiest populace in the world. Yet they are dreaded socialists.
Americans need to education themselves about the ‘externalities’ of capitalism and how those costs are circling back to make conservatism, or conserving our way of life, dangerous for our own survival. Time to adapt before or adapt later, ‘before’ will be less painful but take more responsibility.
Good Luck America! I’m moving to Europe for a bit..

I am about sick of all of this name throwing, calling bull crap. Ex- President Bush is blamed for everything that can go wrong in your life. That is crock. Blame Lousiana for Katrina, they were there and forewarned should have done something, oh but Bush being in Washington was suppose to do it. What about Congress, shouldn’t they have done something. 911 well Clinton had Osama in hand and let him go, but that was Bush’s fault to. I tell you all to grow up and do something about your life yourself, the problem with American is we have to many freeloaders that take and never give anything back but lips. Clinton didn’t balance the budget the Republican Congress did, everyone of you give the Presidents to much damn credit, or to much blame. The judicial system is divided into 3 parts so one person won’t be in total control of the country.
Obama, you act like he is Jesus on the second coming, he is just a man, who hopefully will do what he said, but like all politicians was probably all talk and no action.
No we have not been living in a socialistic country, then we would be like Venezuela or Cuba. NOT, get your facts straight before responding. I personally respect Bush, He held his head high, kept our country safe, and the next time a hurricane comes to Louisana why don’t you go there and get them out yourselves since their own state can’t do it.

I am curious about the scavenger hunt, and if there is any information on it? This is the first time in my memory that I have heard of it.

Kelly,
You should be aware that the Constitution does require that the oath be administered. Obama did become President at Noon on January 20 but was without authority until the oath was given.

I have a dream that an American Indian
aka Native American will be president
someday!!! Leave the children alone.
They are beautiful, intelligent and will
make their ancestors proud just like
their mother has and will continue to do
so. I did not ask to be born white with
1/32 ndn. I,too, have experienced the negativity because of the color or lack
of by the very people I love. It is so easy to stereotype. It’s time to move on. Barack Obama is what this country needs to heal right now. I have already felt it in public where people are finally able to hold their heads up high. The cultures need to be remembered. The divisiveness needs to
dissappear.

Yea, he has already done soooo much good. Tomorrow he signs papers to use U.S. dollars to fund worldwide abortions. Real story, you can find it on some news websites. There is a real good use of money that our country doesn’t have in the first place.

really?
this is dumb.
america has a new president. regardless of what we would like.
i personally think he is an amazing guy.
and yes. ive done my research.
we need to give him a chance,
he just took office, lets see what he can do.
&&the jonas thing, im sure they didnt get paid for it.
they probally did it, because of the expirience,
god. give them some credit.
theyre pretty amazing people.

President Obama has a tough job ahead of him: trying to repair the nation’s economy, as well as to attempt to repair our status in the world, deal with the war in Iraq and the conflict in the Middle East. And none of these will be resolved overnight! His inauguration was uplifting to many people, who saw it as a “vacation day from everyday troubles”. I am also glad that his daughters were able to enjoy the day, as well. May God bless him, his family and his administration.

So the results are in and like it or not we DO have a new COMMANDER and CHIEF.It is only fair that we get on a UNITED (KEYWORD)front and become real americans.LETS GET BUSY. May the heavens above bless this family and this country.

“Yea, he has already done soooo much good. Tomorrow he signs papers to use U.S. dollars to fund worldwide abortions.”
This is the by-product of using govt money to fund abstinence-only education programs.

repair status in the world…Pffft!

Bertie -
“I dont see why thats true. Could’nt you get a loan and then get into a position where you refinanced?”
There’s no govt program forcing the banks to refinance into more risky loans. That’s why it’s true.
“And on the flip side why are 35% of the foreclosures not a problem?”
Actually, CRA-associated foreclosures account for ~15% all foreclosures. You have to remember that these CRA-associated loans are for low-value housing. Contrary to republican spin, there still were income requirements for these loans. So actually, 85% of this crisis is directly due to GREED on the side of the banks. I bet you didn’t know that the vast majority of people who took out the ARM and interest-only loans that are now foreclosing (remember CRA does not allow these loans) actually qualified for fixed-rate mortgages and were never told that they did. It’s called disception bordering on fraud all to increase profits. These loans brought increased fees into brokers.

Wow, no one is even paying attention to the topic of the article. ugh.
Anyway, I’m happy for Sasha and Malia! :) That was so sweet of the Jonas Brothers to do. I can just imagine their excitement, hehe.

Who’s idea was it to put the review stand on the left side of the street. In my thirty years in the US Army I have never heard or saw the command, “EYES LEFT” but that is what the marching units had to do Tuesday. Also someone needs to teach the VP how to SALUTE properly. shame, shame.

Let’s try to work together to move the country forward. Let us just for once concentrate not on our differences but what we can do to heal the nation’s problems. Our problems are so serious that a moment of energy wasted on incriminations is a moment too much. Let us please raise the level of civility in this nation. Say what you have to say without resorting to name calling or foul language. Use your time to write a well considered letter to the editor or to a legislator rather than expend it on unsubstantiated rants (and that happens on both sides of the political fence). Let’s all make a greater effort to model integrity and honesty for our children. Let’s make an effort to sew seeds of kindness instead of divisiveness. Transformation of this nation and this world does begin with each one of us.

Seriously, there is a problem when you need a band to be of one race or another. A person is a person; it shouldn’t matter what their race is, for goodness sake.

Don’t tell me that America _still_ has to suffer under the vmindless, Tiger Beat-minded dribblings of the Jonas Brothers???
They are the WORST thing to happen to music. ALL music!
Yes, even “Disco Duck” is better than anything these brainless poser boys could be ordered to sing by their corporate masters.

Good idea to teach the girls respect for the White House. Times are hard now, but then thinking back they were hard for Bush as well. 9/11 and Katrina were big events for his administration to deal with and tweak the necessary responses. However, the MSM beat him down just like they did McCain, Palin and even Hillary to get Obama elected. Hopefully all their effort will prove to be a good thing for America and Obama will be up to the job for ALL Americans.

I think this is a fabulous time for these young children. This may never happen again in history. They have been blessed to experience this. I hope and pray for the success of this president and his family. I also hope to one day meet all of them. This would be one great experience for me and my family.

I am black and my kids LOVE the Jonas Bros as well as me. So that’s not true that black kids don’t like them. Grow up. Our kids are not racist like many of you were and are. And todays generation consider tweens to be ages 8-12. It’s the time before you become a teenager. Before yall make dumd comments research them first to be sure you don’t look like a doofus. Most of you sound like tweens yourselves. Grow up and get your own lives.

Posted by: Kisha | January 22, 2009, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

I can not believe the comments that are made on these postings. These 2 little girls have absolutely nothing to do w/ how this country has been ran (EVER). This article was about the Jonas Brothers surprising them, which I think is great & it has turned “political” on your ass. It is crazy how “grown” people act. I BET if your kids had this opportunity, you would not have one bad word to say. Let these children be children. “WE THE PEOPLE” is going to be what makes them grow up so fast & bitter, b/c of comments made by, not children but, grown folks!!
I am truly happy he is our President & I will support him all the way. Nobody is perfect & “YES” he will mess up, I’m quite sure but, give the man a chance to “show & prove”. I believe he can make a change.
To the person that made the comment-
Obama 08/Biden 09, how immature can you be. I truly hope you don’t have kids, if so, I feel sorry for them to have a parent who apparently had no compassion to a human. No matter what color they are. I’ll pray for you, you certainly need it.

That is so exciting. These girls are having the time of their lives, and I hope that they keep having fun. I pray and hope that President Barack Obama will succeed in his presidency. The first family is a very classy well mannered family. I also pray that God puts his blanket of safety and grace on The Obamas. I am very happy that you won President Barack Obama. Continue to do your great work, and one day I hope I get to meet you and your family.
Lots of Love,
