Judd Gregg Could Be Picked for Commerce as Soon as Monday
An Obama administration official tells ABC News that Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., is now the leading candidate for Commerce Secretary and could be announced as soon as Monday.
Gregg would be at least the third Republican to join the Obama administration, joining the ranks of Transportation Secretary and former GOP congressman Ray LaHood and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. (The political party of National Security Advisor and retired Marine General Jim Jones is unclear, though he is a longtime friend of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and appeared at a McCain campaign event.)
Gregg’s announcement, while making the Obama administration more bipartisan, would likely have the opposite effect on the U.S. Senate. New Hampshire’s Democratic governor John Lynch could appoint a Democrat to replace Gregg, thus delivering to Democrats their elusive 60-vote majority, empowering them to stave off Republican filibusters.
Gregg, a former governor, is up for re-election in 2010 in a state that has been trending Democratic for the last few years.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see all of the GOP senators kicked out. But the whole “60 votes” thing is overrated. For all intents and purposes, Democrats can generally muster over 60 now – especially given that moderate republicans are no longer welcome in the GOP. But on issues like EFCA, not all Dems will come along (the party is more ideologically diverse). So, it’s not such a big deal.

So Obama tries another round of bipartisan outreach and he gets accused of trying to stuff a Democrat into what would be an open Republican Senate seat. Isn’t it time to quit playing nice with the GOP?

Sen. Judd Gregg would be fine as long as he reduces the trade deficit and chooses commerce over foreign aid.

I’m from NH. Most voters in NH including me are registered as “Undeclared” which basically means independent. Judd Gregg is a moderate Republican and is well-liked all around the state. Personally I think he would still have no problem getting re-elected in 2010. I would vote for him (and have in past elections)even though I tend to lean democrat. He would also be a great asset to the Obama administration.

And the Republicans are still praising each other for voting against the Stimulus Package; as if being a gutless naysayer is accomplishing anything. It seems to me that that Gregg getting the appointment is better for his career then it is for the Democrats.
Posted by: Thinking | January 31, 2009, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm
As noted below, the Democrats don’t vote in a bloc – speaking to diversity within the party. It seems that only mindless lemmings all vote in a bloc – which is apparently the biggest problem with Republicans in Congress now and under Bush. Although I am against much of the spending in the ‘stimulus’ bill, it is absolutely absurd that not one Republican had a mindset counter to their party leaders.

Everyone should look at the Democrats voting record. The do not vote in a block.
Sen Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is on the high end for voting against Democrat’s bills. She is my Senator and I have agreed with most of her votes.
The $400,000 limit on bailout bank salaries was done without consulting with Obama. She was a major Obama surrogate, but she will remain go against him when considered necessary.
It seems that Obama is not including an income restriction in the next round of money to banks.
I encourage everyone to contact Congress to vote for Sen McCaskill’s bill.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE DIRECTIVE
INITIAL STEP TOWARDS CIVILIAN NATIONAL SECURITY FORCE
Back in July 2008, Barack Obama, then the presidential front runner, called for a “civilian national security force” as powerful as the U.S. military.
“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,” Obama told a Colorado Springs audience.
The Defense Department has established a “civilian expeditionary workforce” that will see American civilians trained and equipped to deploy overseas in support of worldwide military missions.
The move is seen by some as an initial step towards fulfilling president Obama’s promise to form a civilian national security force as powerful as the U.S. military.
The program was officially implemented one week ago, on the 23rd January, when Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England signed Defense Department Directive 1404.10 (PDF), which provides a summation of the duties the workforce will undertake.

FYI, Salazar’s a Dem, albeit a conservative one. Why should the Republicans be shocked by this announcement? Obama has said for months how he wanted a bipartisan cabinet. Now when he keeps his promise, the Repubs cry foul. I think the smart thing to do going forward is for the NH gov. to appoint a Republican caretaker (the most moderate one you can find) until 2010. Obama then gets nearly everything he wants: a well-qualified cabinet member, a Republican party that owes him a favor, and an open Republican Senate seat in a Dem trending state in ’10. The only think he doesn’t get is 60 senators in the immediate term. However, I think Obama’s patience is greater and longer than the rest of us and the pros far outweigh the cons.

Posted by: shorty | January 31, 2009, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm
It is laughable.
Steele is talking about how bipartisanship is over rated and the GOP is glorified by voting Against the Stimulus, while the majority of the GOP Governors are supporting the plan
The Governors are closer to the people and are the ones who will be hung out to dry as their economies dry up.
If the GOP loses the Governerships they control, they will lose even more seats in the House and Senate. This could be total disater for the GOP.
Posted by: Thinking | January 31, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm
I don’t think Obama would have picked him if he didn’t think he was the best person available for the job. If Washington were working in a more non-partisan way, the balance in the senate would not be so critical to either party. It is clear that everyone expects the Grand Old Party to obstruct by filibustering good things which have large support. So much for bipartisanship.
I remember a time when senators like Everett Dirksen and Stuart Symington, just to name a couple, worked together on a lot of things for the good of the people. Try working with the party of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’reilly.
Posted by: JAB | January 31, 2009, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm
Republican haters are so funny. They are hypocrites who wrapped themselves in the flag when it was to their advantage, shut out all opposition when they were briefly in power (no Democrats were ever allowed to participate in the process when Republicans had the necessary votes to control legislation), and the Bush Administration even brought in the political donors to hold secret meetings to write policy and proposed legislation that led to $4/gallon oil and record profits for the Republican patrons in the oil industry.
Now they try to claim that Obama is socialist by letting Republicans participate in his administration?
Their idiocy is obvious.

I have to laugh at the folks on here who are either that naive about what this is, or are also smart enough to be under their tongue about their contempt for anybody who is GOP. There are a lot of GOP haters over at CBS. At least ABC has more balance and getting pretty equal with FOX. This whole fiasco is nothing more than a chess game for Obama. In order to get through everything he and his liberal spend-thrift friends want, he must have as much control as possible. Having a filibuster proof senate is one of them. I’m waiting for them to just dump all the uncounted ballots in MN, and give the election to Franken. This would be proof enough that the dems have a “master plan”.

Those of you in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, the property devaluations and job losses are because of your high taxes and union control of the labor force. Companies, and people, won’t invest their money where leeches will suck out all their money and leave no profits. Nothing’s going to change till you replace your government with people who will protect your interests instead of the unions. 80% of the public is against unions and Obama isso beholden that he’s drafting executive orders to make them more powerful. It’s all about the political contributions and unions pushing their members to work elections and vote the “union” way. Losers.

I am having this fantasy that Obama will do more than just stop by for a photo op on the Hill. I am hoping that he becomes a regular part of the debate, in person in front of both sides of the aisle. If he continues to load the deck then his presence is not to sell his programs but to rub the Republican’s noses in his lopsided majority. There is no reason to suspect that he is being disingenuine at this point but, this move – yanking a sitting Republican from the Senate for first chair in Commerce smells really bad. There are other good candidates out there. He needs to go find one and leave the Senate alone.
If he is truly open to debate and wants to make policy making as transparent as he claims and makes these trips to the Hill as part of that process then get off the Hill to fill the Cabinet. This could be the beginning of a kind of deception that may never stop.
In a word, this is discourging.

Eric – you are missing the point. I don’t trust Obama as far as I can throw him. He came out of that Illinois political machine – and this is the kind of cheap stunt that is typical of that group.

Shame on you Republicans. Here President Obama wants to tap one of your brilliant conservative minds as commerce secretary, to basically administer the stimulis package that’s about to be passed, and you want to whine that your guy ain’t good enough? What is it you want? Power? Sorry, you lost that on election day! Remember? The people spoke! And our guy is just keeping his word for a change.
And the fact that this move gives the Dems 60 seats, well that’s just an accident (evil grin)
And neogeorge, the reason 60 seats are important isn’t for veto power. It’s filibuster. The stimulis package is only the tip of the proverbial iceburg. We’ve got the Employee Free Choice Act comming up, a bill neocons will fight tooth and nail to defeat because it will give even MORE power to working people. We have Health care, and a whole long list of issues the President promised us he would try to solve. Filibuster is the only power Republicans have left

If he takes this job, Gregg will simply be confirming the reason the Republicans lost power. It isn’t because they people wanted, or that had value. It is because somewhere along the way the Republicans lost their ideals, and stopped looking out for anybody but themselves.

Posted by: straightmate | January 31, 2009, 10:59 pm 10:59 pm
So, Tom, I take it you want this President to have this kind of power before you know anything about him? You think this is all very cute and, I suppose if I were of your ilk, I would think the whole thing was kind of a fringe benefit for a job well done. But, what do you really know about Obama? He sold a good story but has he really ever done anything? Take a long look and tell us something that he has actually accomplished in office.
He ran a great campaign, perhaps the best campaign of all time. He stayed on message and took some serious beatings – both from Hilliary and McCain (though, McCain less so). He raised money the old fashioned way and, from appearances didn’t sell his soul for support. This, I give him and have nothing but respect.
But, let’s get down to the business of power. He has never had power and here you are turning his loose on perhaps the most powerful job on the planet (or, at least in the top three) and we don’t know him? We know the hype? We have all bought the memorial plate collection and danced in the streets for the brand new day. Doing service work in the streets of Chicago with no money and no real influence isn’t necessarily the measure of the man. It is not what he does when he is down and out – it is often what he does when he is prosperous. In this case, its about power.
The beauty of our system is that we have open debate and it takes time to work through conflicting issues until we hammer out an equitable solution. It takes awhile and that is a good thing. Tossing the pendulem all the way to the left without checks and balances …. well, I for one, think it may mean we are setting ourselves up for a nightmare that we may never unravel. Slow works here until we all see how this thing is going to play.

“Take a long look and tell us something that he has actually accomplished in office.”
Well I took a long look at what he’s done in office. After all he’s been president 11 days. So far he’s passed the stimulis bill in the House. Answered a Katrina like disaster in the South on day ONE, signed a bunch of Presidential orders that you probably don’t agree with, and I think tomorrow night he’s watching the Super Bowl with some Republican and Democrat lawmakers.
The rest of your post I don’t have the energy nor desire to respond to

Thats some serious vetting for ya! Yeah, well….go ahead, go to sleep – all this serious vetting will wear out cracker jack reasoning like yours.

A smart move on the Obama side. Hire the Republican Senator, confirm him quickly, have the Democrat Governor replace him with a Democrat in the Senate, that gives the Democrat complete and total control of the Senate, then fire Judd Gregg. Brilliant. And of course the stupid Republicans will say “Oh isn’t Obama a great man, he reaches out.” Yeah he reaches out, out to our wallets and total enslavement of our population. Next stop, complete surrender to Iran.
Posted by: Gary M | February 1, 2009, 1:21 am 1:21 am
I wonder if he tried Voinovich first. Same underlying plan (get to 60 with Dem governor, state trending Dem), but possibly more moderate Republican, and from Ohio.

I still need time to adjust to having a President who can outsmart people.
Posted by: Sparky | February 1, 2009, 2:20 am 2:20 am
I am from New Hampshire and I am fairly certain Senator Gregg will accept the position (if he is offered it), but I am not so sure Governor Lynch will appoint a Democrat to replace him. New Hampshire may be “trending” Democrat, but it’s still pretty independent, and I don’t think most New Hampshire citizens like the idea of Democrats having a 60-seat filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, which may entice Lynch to appoint to a Republican to replace Gregg. I’ve also heard that Gregg is negotiating with Lynch to ensure that he chooses a Republican to replace him, that way he can accept the cabinet position without feeling like he betrayed his party. We’ll see what happens!

Comrade Obama is still trying to maneuver his way into absolute power. Does he acually think he is fooling anyone? All the Democrats he has picked so far are flaming liberal extremists and as far as reaching out to the Republicans that’s contrived BS. Obama isn’t intelligent but he has enough Clinton elitists around him to show him the ropes. He would sell his mother to have a filibuster-proof house so he could stick it to the American people in order to push his socialist agenda through. Why else would Chavez, Castro, and the other Commies back him? I’m a non-partisan, ex-democrat. If you read some of the posts by fanatics with their heads up their Democratic party symbol you can see why I’m no longer in that party such as Angie, matt and other non-thinking sheep.
His political maneuvering could cause anarchy within this country. That’s one of the reasons for huge gun sales after he was awarded the presidency by the media.

Way to go President Obama! Things just keep getting better and better! But then again, after 8 catastrophic years under Bush and the neocons, they could hardly go anywhere but up, but this is progress!!

Thought a Democrat should be pick instead of Republican. I don’t it is going to work this too well in the Obama Admin. Can’t wait for all Republican to come back in 2010. Hope we bring our party back together again.

If Obama counted with his fingers and toes, he would still be an IMPROVEMENT. I think he is smart, sincere and who we need right now. My approach for those who are stuck, will remain angry and can’t accept that HE WON (365 electoral votes)- is to NOT argue with them or defend Obama. He needs NO defending. That really makes them mad….fellow Obama supporters, try that. Simply respond to their posts with…”who, PRESIDENT OBAMA” or..”Change”. hahaha. I love it!

herewegoagain ———–You sound like fathead Rush. “I hope he fails.” People like you are not exactly wanting to put country first. Typical of most republicans these days. By the way, the economy took a nose dive during Bush’s watch, not Obama’s. He is trying and atleast isnt hiding under his desk as Bush did. You probably have a picture of Hannidy hanging on your wall. The Rep party seems more interested in bashing everything a 2 week old President is doing than saving and mending their own party.
Posted by: CAW | February 1, 2009, 9:21 am 9:21 am
The economy took a nose dive under a Democratic Congress and a Republican President. There’s plenty of blame to go around, so let’s cut the partisan crap. It’s not Republican vs. Democrat, it’s we the people against the crooked politicians. The sooner we all realize that the better.
Posted by: Gotterdammerung | February 1, 2009, 9:42 am 9:42 am
CAW: Rush didn’t say he hoped he fails. He said he hoped his SOCIALIST POLICIES fail, as do I and millions of others. Why can’t you libs make comments without insults, and hate-mongering, and lies?

Gotterdammerung ————-You are exactly right and you wouldnt know that by reading my last post. I too fall into the blame game. “We the people”.

trish_in_texas ———Nice ring to it. Anyway I am sorry as I am wrong at the Republican bashing as I also think this country needs to move as one forward. My bashing of Bush or whoever is my own disapointment and anger at a President and party I supported. I voted the Rep ticket every election up until Bush’s second term. I didnt vote in the Kerry/Bush election. I loved the Rep. party in its great days and it just makes me sick where and what direction, or lack of, the party decided to go. I apologize for venting blanket anger towards a party I once loved. Maybe I should use that energy in trying to heal instead of further tearing apart. I stand corrected. However as of today, I am not sorry for supporting Obama.
Posted by: CAW | February 1, 2009, 9:58 am 9:58 am
I stand corrected. Gregg needs to accept the Commerce Secretary job offer asap. First, he will have more power in that slot than he does as just another mediocre senator in the GOP less than stellar crowd. Second – but most importantly – it will give the Democrats their filibuster proof Senate majority. The American people win over petty obstructionist Republicans. Gregg wins more power. Democrats are better off and everyone is happy. Happiness IS the American dream.

CAW, I didn’t vote for Bush either time. Nor did I vote for Obama. I was a Ron Paul — when he didn’t make it, I voted Libertarian. Bush was horrible — he was a liberal flying the Republican flag. So many Reps in Congress bent over and gave him what ever he wanted. He spent like a drunken liberal. No one can honestly say Bush was a conservative. McCain is not conservative either — that’s why he lost. What these politicians don’t seem to understand is conservatives want an actual conservative. However, the financial mess this country is in started with the housing bubble burst, which goes back to the Clinton administration forcing the Affordable Housing Bill on us and making the banks make loans to people who never had the means nor the intent to pay them back. They repackaged those loans as securities, hence the Wall Street failure. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac — gee, look at that mess. Investigate it — who benefited from this? Can you say Chris Dodd and Barney Frank? Hear of Franklin Raines? Obama’s buddy and campaign contributor? What did he make? 85 million dollars in two years? Something outrageous like that. He should be in prison. I don’t like Bush or McCain, but I WILL say this for them: they tried several times to get Congress to look into the Fannie and Freddie mess and Franklin Raines but were stopped before the bills got out of committee, by, guess who? The Democrats. So, don’t blame this mess all on Bush. Do your research. Might try listening to that “fathead” you referred to. You can learn a lot, even if you disagree. If nothing else, what you hear on his show should arouse enough curiosity to check it out yourself instead of believing what you are spoon fed by the main stream media.

If offered the position, he will accept it. He knows he won’t be re-elected in 2010.

I love it. YA want to play the blame game? Try this one…All you people who voted for the moron in chief not once but twice are responsible for where our country is. My god how could people be so blind. We tried ignorant and incompetent for 8 years…didn’t work out so well did it? Now the grown ups are back in charge and we can begin the rebuilding process once again. Seems to be a pattern here…repubes screw up the country and the Dems have to fix it, time after time. Deregulation is the cause of our crises. Anything else was just a minor effect. WHat the hell did the conseratives think would happen if you take the referee out of the game? That corporations, who sole purpose is to make profits, would choose to do what was best for country and employees over profits? If you believe that your more than likely the type of person who would vote for Bush…twice. I’m not saying that most conservatives are ignorant people, I’m saying that most ignorant people are conservatives.

Yeah, Bill, Right on! Those moron Republicans! What in the world were they thinking of trying to get oversight over Fannie and Freddie? Just a bunch of rich idiots trying to step on OUR guys, right, Bill? We don’t pay taxes — we just get appointed to cabinet posts, right Bill. Bunch of ignorant Republicans.

Concerned….I hadn’t read that but, if true, rock on! Now we will see if Gregg still holds Obama’s attention.
We simply do not know anything about Obama in spite of Tom’s earlier post that (in effect says) “he has kicked arse in the past 11 days…yada yada yada” nonsense. Like a lot of people I want this President to be successful but there is a lot of vetting to do before I trust him. It takes time and, well, time takes time. I am not ready to put this guy on the throne like a lot of liberals. We didn’t even know who he was two years ago and now he is being tagged as the second coming.
Let’s step back and watch, see where this thing goes before we find a spot for him on Rushmore.

Obama doesn’t need a supermajority in the Senate. There are a few wise republicans.
Unlike U.S. reps Senators represent the whole state. Lest the the GOP Senators up for re-election forget the trouncing of 2008 they will soon experience the same fate if they don’t fall in line.
No more softball republicans. Just like your fearless AND new RNC Chair said, if you plan to obstruct PREPARE TO GET KNOCKED OVER.
I could not agree with him more.

“Obama doesn’t need a supermajority in the Senate. There are a few wise republicans.”
Or a few wise Democrats (from Byron York):
“Have spent some time today talking to Republican and Democratic members of the Senate, as well as political strategists, about what is coming with the stimulus bill. The first thing is that the Republican critique of the bill, as passed by the House, has taken hold among some moderate Democrats — or, at least, they share many of the Republicans’ reservations. Those Democrats simply will not support the bill if it comes up in the Senate in the same form in which it passed the House. They want to see a lot — a lot — of spending taken out of the bill, spending that they might actually support were it in a normal appropriations bill but which they believe has no place in the stimulus package.
“
