Liberal Republican Senator to Oppose Geithner

President Barack Obama’s nominee to be Secretary of the Treasury is expected to be confirmed by the Senate today.

But in a speech prepared for the Senate floor, but not yet delivered, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, says she won’t be voting for Timothy Geithner.

"Throughout the state of Maine and indeed throughout the nation, millions of hard-working Americans pay their taxes on time and in full," Collins says. "Our taxation system is essentially an honor system that depends on self-assessment and honesty. When taxpayers make mistakes, they are expected to correct them promptly and completely. How can we tell the taxpayers that they are expected to comply fully with our tax laws, when these laws have been treated so cavalierly by the person who would lead the Treasury Department and, ultimately, the Internal Revenue Service, when he was applying them to himself?"

Grandstanding at its best!

A big brava to Collins, if she actually delivers her speech.
It’d certainly be a breath of fresh politics if Collins, or someone, would take note of Geithner’s special family connection to The One.
The Senate should NOT take leave of its sense, and go against the wishes of its constituents, to turn the Treasury (and IRS) over to Geithner because of Geithner’s father having put Obama’s mother on the corporate gravy train through the Ford Foundation.
Geithner’s tax and servant problems is only the half of that — he worked for the very people who’ve wrecked the economy, then been given billions from the Treasury and Federal Reserve.
This is an obscene nomination.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine….you go girl…you tell Obama just how the real working American feels about Geithner and him lying about his income. Sorry but I guess he couldn’t afford a CPA to do his taxes or a CPA wouldn’t risk losing his license to falsify his taxes for him. Now Obama wants him to be head of the Treasury Dept. More corruption……

Who cares?
He will be confirmed any ways.

If the Senate gives Geithner the (rest of the) Treasury, it will be a powerful signal to the population in general — many of whom are in, or about to be in, desperate straits — that ANYthing goes.
If the Senate gives the Treasury to Geithner, the Congress should be replaced by whatever means is the fastest.

I say 75+ to confirm.

“Her oppo does nothing except buy her points with disgruntled voters back home.”
Yeah … silly little thing, representing her constituents, the voters by whose power she sits in the Senate.
The rest of the Senate had better remember the lil ole voters … and the half the population who won’t even participate in the parties, OR the elections. The voters didn’t send these clothes-horses to DC merely to curry favor with those who are — however temporarily — more powerful than they.
Hurray for Collins … even if her opposition ratchets up the new anti-woman stance of the hijacked “Democrats”‘ big cheese.

I know that they are trying to make it seem that Geithner is the only one qualified for the job, inspite of his tax issues and other problems but that is just not true. Remember that Geithner was one of the ones who was supposed to be standing guard when this whole thing blew up, especially in New York.

Posted by: BubbaRight | January 26, 2009, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

Let me get this straight the IRS now can run sting operations and entrap people with “legal tax avoidance advice” and then throw them in jail and seize their assets, but if Geithner doesn’t bother to pay his taxes (Yeah it was a “Turbo Tax” glitch, RIGHT, WHATEVER!!! All millionares use it!) he get’s to run the US Teasury department!!! Black is White, Up is Down, Left is Right… America we are so “bass ackwards” we can’t even recognize the tyranny SMASHING us in the FACE!!! PLEASE, PLEASE WAKE UP!!! before it’s too late!!! Or forever resign yourself to silence as the world around you self destructs…

“He will be confirmed any ways.”
If Geithner IS confirmed, the mass of the population — including the “blacks” and “gays” — will finally get it that we are pawns in corporation-plantation politics.
If Geithner IS confirmed, look for him to be swept away by an actual movement for democracy. The Declaration of Independence is crystal clear that replacing the government is called for from time to time.

Once again Republicans are grandstanding and making things harder. Just once can’t they think about the good of the country first? We need someone in place soon to stop the markets from crashing. We need this stimulus for the 3 millions jobs it will create. Let’s get this done and move on to the next task!

The Liberal Republican Senator is right. This clown forgot to pay his income taxes and now has amnesia that seems to happen to Obama and all of his associates.

“We need someone in place soon to stop the markets from crashing.”
Well, they sure crashed conveniently when it seemed The Pup might manage to lose the bought-and-paid-for “election” to non-candidate McCain.
But of COURSE they can put Humpty-Dumpty back together again.

“This clown forgot to pay his income taxes”
Nonono: even AFTER the IRS “reminded” him, he refused to pay the years for which he wasn’t audited. AND pocketed the IMF’s check for FISA taxes, which if YOU had done it would have made the entire rest of your life a misery of bureaucratic retaliation …
IF the Senate confirms this guy, it will be the beginning of the end of blackwashing the “Obama” organization.

Susan Collins is NOT a liberal Republicon. If her vote is not needed to pass something that is against the people and for the corporations, or there is not way it will pass anyway, she votes against it and proclaims she is an independent Senator.
When the votes are down to the wire and the conservatives need her vote to cram legislation through that will benefit them and their wealthy donors, they know that they have ALWAYS been able to count on her vote.
Don’t let Senator Collins give you a snow job like she has to so many others.
She is an extremely ambitious member of the Senate and her every move is made with consideration for how it will look for her future runs for Governor and then President.

Too many powerful people get a pass!
Timmy will likely get a pass for trying to scam taxes and the withholding payments from the IMF
Jefferson seems to be getting a pass for bypassing banking disclosure laws and storing 100k in his freezer from who knows where
Rangel, 4 rent controlled apartments, 2 primary residence allowances, free car storage, off-shore income not reported etc etc
Murtha gets a pass for funneling TARP to a hometown failed bank (and also intervened in the investigation of the banks solvency)
Lobbyist appointed to defense posts the day after a new ethics “requirement”
New payments for overseas birth control
To mention a few.
It is about time for a responsible respectable government

“Wake up Mr President and ‘do the

Puppets don’t sleep, so they can’t “wake up”. As for doing the “right” thing … what the “Obama” organization is doing is FAR right — along with some domestic cultural accomodations to keep His gay and anti-woman base together.

For all those who don’t know what’s actually going on, here’s the script
Republicans grandstanding. They are looking for the traction anywhere anyhow to give them a way to become relevant again.
They know that Geithner will pass confirmation.
They will have that one little nugget to toss around during their re-election
Hey… I stood against the Democrats – please vote for me.
From all the characters of corruption and backroom dealing, and bathroom stall relations of the past administration, Geithner looks like the Pope.

“New payments for overseas birth control”
The One has declared the abortion-mothering subject — a core religious matter for MANY — “stale and fruitless”, and left it to goofy grandma Pelosi to alert the media that NOT having children saves on paying for medical care for them.
US-funded contraception/abortion for non-whites in other countries isn’t “new”, though. It was done under Clinton, after Reagan first no-kayed it.

“It is a shame to think that this man, who has already played a significant role in the bailouts, is “the best man” to do the job.”
It’s an outrage, but it’s not a “liberal” outrage — the “Obama” organization is NOT liberal, but fascist/corporatist.
The birthday suit and the painted-on grin distracted from this for a time, but he AND his wife have been in the corporate pocket for many, many years.
Right-wingers in the Democrats inflicted this phenomenon on the country — and He’s already gone back on the few suggestions that looked “liberal”.
Without the flim-flam, John Edwards and Howard Dean would be in office, and we’d have a shot at peace and plenty. As it is, the “Obama” organization is continuing the wars, further enriching the rich, and flim-flamming the increasingly unbelieving press.

Good!! Timothy Geithner can’t even figure out Turbotax but we think he’ll do just fine figuring out the Treasury? The fact that he’s gotten this far in the nominating process is an outrage. If he were a republican and had made the same mistake, he’d be called an idiot, a liar, a cheat – but he’s a democrat, so not paying a tax for four years (even though he signed a contract saying he would) is just A-OK. This is change I can believe in!

When someone tries so vehemently to discredit the messenger, they’re trying to shift focus from the target of the message.
You’ll find that tactic in Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”.
Collins is correct. Geithner is unfit to be Treasury Secretary. His nomination is a slap in the face to every American who pays their taxes without cheating and without complaint. But I also have no doubt that he’ll be confirmed by our esteemed Congress.

Blue Fairy or Belle – That’s quite the fairy tale, pun intended. The obvious being, either one would have inherited the same international and domestic mess. Realistically, both will probably take more than a four year term to significantly improve, no matter who would have made it to office.

He may BE a “Republican” … it doesn’t matter. They’ve bought or intimidated nearly everyone in the Congress, after sand-bagging other candidates and hood-winking Democratic voters in the primary.
If the Congress holds together at all, a lot of captive “Democrats” will lose their places there … but by the time THAT happens, the Great Depression will look like a mass camping trip.

If the Senate DOES confirm Geithner, it will be a sure sign to those outside the “Obama” organization that there’s NO hope for “change” without kicking them ALL out of office.
When the novelty’s all worn off the executive birthday suit, the Congress will be ready enough to impeach … the figurehead for the new-right organization.

This is a small issue to me unless the nominee (regardless of party affiliation) with this problem was
looking to expand IRS audits or something like that (hypocrisy).

Would MOST people as ridiculously compensated as Geithner pocket a check for the EMPLOYER’s share of FISA taxes? Let’s hope not.
Putting a BAD rich kid in charge of the Treasury — even IF Obama’s beholden to him because Geithner’s father put Obama’s mother on the corporate gravy train — would be basely stupid. On the contrary, this is GREAT change: a highly-paid person caught with his hand in the FISA till wouldn’t have made it THIS far, if there weren’t change — to fascism pure and simple — under way.
A rubber-stamp legislature is one of the SUREST signs of fascism.

“I really didnt see much downside to this program. If you approve $600 million and people dont need the boxes then would all the money be spent? I am hoping not.”
Not the program, the expansion of it to the tune of $650M.
And while its true most of the money for this (in the form of coupons) would only be used if people applied for them, that’s still a huge chunk of money (and low hanging budgetary fruit for the GOP).

Curiously (or not so curiously) Belle Starr (aka blue fairy) just discovered this feeling when the Democrats became in charge of Congress and the Presidency.

“Why? Are 0.0% of the troubled mortgages originated through ACORN?”
Correct.
ACORN is not a lending institution.
But hey right wingers need to have their minority bogeyman organization to fleece their racist rank and file for campaign money so who am I to judge.

I think she is on a general strike.
“ACORN is not a lending institution. ”
From
“ACORN Housing Corporation launches non-profit mortgage brokerage
ACORN Housing and CitiMortgage, Bank of America, First American Title Insurance Company, and Fannie Mae announced today the launching of a new non-profit mortgage brokerage called Acorn Housing Affordable Loans, LLC, to help qualified borrowers enjoy the benefits of homeownership throughout Florida. Additional offices will be launched in other states in the coming months. The new mortgage brokerage will also help homeowners faced with resetting adjustable rates that may make their current home mortgage payments unaffordable.”

“So Bertie, are you contending that the ACORN Loan Brokerage company that launched in Feb of 2008 in FL caused the meltdown? ”
I am contending that, once again, you are/were wrong.
ACORN has been involved for years and years in advocating for relaxed loan criterion and pushing them on minority communities.
The correct reaction when you are shown that you are wrong badly and so frequently would be for you to shed some of your DailyKos talking points and keep a more open mind.

Geithner is an ethically compromised petty crook. There is no way to look at the facts and not conclude that he was involved in padding his pockets- even more egregious when he wasnt even paying any tax in the first place. A small little swindle.
Obama is ok with that because he was doing the same things in Chicago.
Obama’s calculation is that the swindler will be content with small stakes. Not everyone agrees this is the best policy…

“Geithner is an ethically compromised petty crook.”
Somehow, petty chiselers with LOTS of money are creepier than the downscale kind.
On the other hand, Harry Reid sang the praises of his “temperament”. (Is that a code word for “gay”, when it’s used in Congress, or does Reid mean only that Geithner’s obsequious to Reid?)
If they DO turn the Treasury over to Geithner, in the wake of the “Obama” machine’s take-back of the promise to rescind the Bush tax cuts, the stage will be set for wide-ranging rebellion against political authority, period.

“ACORN has been involved for years and years in advocating for relaxed loan criterion and pushing them on minority communities.”
Again, blaming minorities for the financial crisis they did not cause.
ACORN had been pressuring banks to stop turning down credit worthy people because of the color of their skin which you of course refer to euphemistically as credit standards.
Now right wingers can’t blame capitalism run amuk and unsupervised caused the majority of the problems.

Good for Susan Collins for showing some integrity.
Obama thinks a tax cheat running the IRS is no big deal.
Makes sense considering he didn’t have the courage to do anything about the corruption in Chicago.

As far as i am concerned bush didn’t have a compassionate bone in his ignorant stubborn body.
I am not a fortune teller as youself but what I do know is that Obama has gotten off to a SMART DETERMINED AND FAITHFUL start to what he campaigned on.
Bush’s mantra was “Ima unitr not a dividr. Wow look how united we have been the last 8 years. This xpotus was a farce from day one.

But do you honestly think that McCain had the right approach. Well the majority of Americans thought he was grandstanding and to be honest he didn’t have a clue to begin with.
Obama is now at the forefront of the economy. Fled is such a cowardly word. But bold move are made by bold people. Obama is now dealing with this problem head on and not from the fringes.

I dont know how much at the forefront he is.
Basically going to the senate and saying “I have to compromise my ethics and ask you to confirm this tax cheat because I dont know how else to run the Treasury” it not really coming from a position of strength.

Just like Obama had no idea about the hate Jeremiah was preaching while he sat in his pews for over 20 years, Geithner had no idea he was supposed to pay his taxes. These two deserve each other. Hope and change!

B.O. SMELL THE CHANGE

Posted by: Witness29 | January 27, 2009, 7:26 am 7:26 am

Call this what you want, Geithner is qualified for the job by his experience in the field not his tolerance to pay his taxes.
Lesson learned for Geithner, but guess what …. HE WILL GET THE JOB…. despite alll the bellyaching from the right.
Take it with a smile guys. You earned this one.
You have less than two years to become relevant again. This is not the way to do it.
Please continue to run around with your hair on fire and look like ranting loonies. We would love to increase our numbers in the senate and house
tip: pick your battles.
————————————-
Hint: I dont pick when something is right or wrong. When its wrong I say so!
You had better do some checking on your so-called “qualified” boy here.
Lets see…. back in November….
“Geithner played a crucial role in the weekend round-the-clock negotiations to rescue ailing Citigroup, which was deemed too big to fail.”
AND….
“On the Sunday morning talk show circuit, Obama’s incoming senior adviser David Axelrod, said Geithner “is uniquely qualified,” and noted that he is steeped in economic knowledge and crisis manager. But interviewer George Stefanopolis pointed out that Geithner was in the middle of the decision to let Lehman Brothers fail, which critics say has led to financial market instability. Geithner was also involved in hammering out the $700 billion bailout package with the Trouble Assets Relief Program or TARP, whose success is debatable.”
And Now late yesterday…..
“Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., a chief backer of the U.S. auto industry in Congress, has seen the NY Post report that executives from Citigroup, the beleaguered bank that took $45 billion in taxpayer TARP money, have ok’ed the purchase of a new $50 million corporate jet, and he’s fumed.
Detroit automakers CEOs were lambasted for their use of corporate jets even before Congress rejected giving the auto makers a bailout – the Bush administration provided loans from TARP funds to keep Chrysler and GM afloat.
“The notion of Citigroup spending $50 million on a new corporate jet, even as it is depending on billions of taxpayer dollars to survive, does not fly,” said Levin in a paper statement.
“To permit Citigroup to purchase a plush plane – foreign-built no less – while domestic auto companies are being required to sell off their jets is a ridiculous double standard,” said Levin, who has contacted Geithner to do something about the Citigroup jet. Presumably, since Geithner is in charge of administering TARP funds, he would hold some leverage over Citigroup”
Now Citigroup “says” its not TARP money that is being used for this…..How do we know?
Maybe Mr Geithner can tell us where that money is, since HE played such a critical role in Citigroup obtaining it!
It do find it very interesting that you support having a tax cheat decide which companies will left to sink or swim on their own and which get billions of dollars they dont have to account for!
You can call it “around with your hair on fire and look like ranting loonies” if you like, I rather think of it as pointing out the sheer stupidity of saying this guy is the only/best man for the job!
The real joke is if Bush had appointed this guy, you would have had him sliced and diced already! And you know it, although you dont have the###### to admit it!

Repeat after me
Treasury Secretary Geithner
hey dude just trying to help you.
Barack Obama comes into this position with more Political Capital than any President in History.
He is respectfully spending it with meekness. Even today he will be meeting with the Republican caucus (unprecedented).
But like you the minority party is belllyaching about the most trivial issues.
Pretty soon they are going to get what they’ve been asking for. A POLITICAL TIMEOUT OVER IN THE CORNER.
Barack Obama and the Dems will just tell them to zip it and ride along.
