McCain Working on Alternative Stimulus Plan

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: According to a Reuters report out this afternoon, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is working with his fellow GOP senators to develop an alternative to President Obama’s stimulus package. “A group of us Republican senators are working on coming up with an alternative package that I would hope would have some elements to it that Americans would support,” McCain tells Reuters’ Steve Holland. “One, we have to have an alternative and two, we still hope that the administration — although time is running out — that the administration will sit down and do some serious negotiating, which they have not done,” he said. This is not a shock. House Republicans also came up with an alternative proposal, before voting unanimously against the Democrats’ proposal on Wednesday. But McCain’s involvement in crafting the package is going to make this effort far more high-profile than it would otherwise be. And to a president who has vowed bipartisanship, this is a direct challenge to come to the negotiating table — issued by a former rival. Said McCain: “I have to tell you I’m disappointed so far in the administration’s lack of consultation or efforts to work with Republicans on the stimulus package.”

Wait while I wipe the tears of laughter off my cheeks LOLOLOLO O.K now McCain lost, he misread the economy during the election, the Dems have a majority and now McCain is going to give us a stimulus plan? Oh the irony! LOLOLOLOL as Obama said “I WON” and it will be his stimulus that goes through to lead this country out of the total MESS the Republicans have gotten us in during the last 8 years. They inherited a FREE & CLEAR economy with NO DEBT and now McCain wants to fix things? LOL LOLOLOLOL oh this is too good!
Go home John and do someting, clear brush or bar b que. Anything other than taking a path that leads to more jokes.

Let’s see if I remember this correctly,
McCain postponed his campaign in September to address the financial crisis – didn’t do squat then, and I doubt that he will do squat now!

This should be interesting, this is when the fillibuster will come to play. I smell a fight in DC, until both sides can hammer out a deal that is financially beneficial to all 538 legislators…oh, and the executive branch too.

Ii quess McCain missed Obama when he came to the hill this week and met with the rethugs.Did you see the vote John? We don’t need your input or your vote. We made it clear in Nov which way this country is going and we’re leaving you and your old old ideas behind!

Anything McCain and the Republican’s come up with would be better than the pork laden bankruptcy bill put forth by the Democrats.
Anyone who thinks the House bill is good should go to a website with real news instead of trolling the blogs on ABC and CNN. Try the WSJ or any number of real news organizations who dare to report the truth about this abomination of a bill.

There will be elements that might be useful from a McCain alternative, but Obama should stick to his guns on the tax issue. Cutting taxes for high-income earners isn’t going to work. Trickle-down has already been tried, and it’s been disastrous. USA desperately needs infrastructure development: roads, bridges, schools, etc. Cutting some of the unnecessary pork-barrel portions of the spending would be preferable. McCain is a joke when it comes to the economy. He simply doesn’t understand it.

Coming up with his own personal bill “that I would hope would have some elements to it that Americans would support” rather than sitting down to work on the one already passed by the House? If he wants to serve the country, he should take the elements Americans want and get those amendments on the floor. If he wants to showboat, go ahead and write a whole new plan, drawing on all that Republican market experience over the last 8 years that were on their watch I’m sure.
I certainly don’t remember the Senate Democrats pulling this sort of stunt when Bush sent his signature tax cuts through in 2000. What happened to accepting the will of the people and allowing a new administration to put in place their policy mandate (as the Democrats did in 2000 – prior to the 9/11 groundswell of Bush support – by allowing into law the Bush Tax Cuts and No Child Left Behind Act).

*This work, which included paving, reflecting pond work, drainage, retaining walls and other infrastructure work was pulled in direct response to Republican tantrums. Not that such appeasement seems to do any good.

Those stimulus packages do nothing but prolong the inevitable. There is a lot of good money going down the drain. The economy needs time to pick up and any stimulus package simply makes matters worse.

I hope all repubs vote against this pork. Aid to illegals just doesn’t help our economy. condoms and abortions don’t either. jobs are the only way out.

Posted by: CHAOS | January 30, 2009, 6:01 pm 6:01 pm

As long as the bill was a real stimulus package I was all for it. But what are things like $335 millions for anti-smoking programs included there? Why is there a $2.7 Billion for National Parks improvements, a figure larger than the whole National Parks budget? How many jobs will be generated by food stamps? by abortion clinics? Many items are actually a total “live now pay later program” of the type you advise your kids against, except that the debt will be carried by the children and their children. Stimulus? Yes. Blind spending- No. And if McCain can come up with a better program he deserves congratulations even from the cynics.

McCain must be getting senile; we rejected his ideas and plans in favor of Obama’s. The Republican’s have had their chance for eight miserable years: the destruction of our economy in order to enrich 400 mega-rich families!

The right is WRONG on this and almost any issue. jimontheright: You make me laugh because you seem to forget, the Bush administration spent $10 TRILLION DOLLARS IN 8 YEARS!!!!!! Bush had a budget surplus when he took over. The Republicans pushed deregulation of the banking industry. I guess you don’t understand economics, or you’d see that the deregulations that eroded safety nets between wall street and the large banks created this disaster. 1. Tax breaks for the wealthy. Trickle down economics DOES NOT WORK!
2. More teen pregancy. Yeah, that’s just great for our economy isn’t it????

Obama needs 60 votes in the senate to do anything.
Obama by himself has no power.
He won means nothing.
There are different branches of government.
Republicans should filibuster his bill if he doesn’t compromise and tell obama to pound sand.
Now Obama is trying in a sneaky way to get Judd Gregg as the 60th vote so republicans have no power.

No one and I mean no one with half a brain could vote for Pelosis “Spending”
Package. I would put Mccain up against that her anyday. People you still don’t get it. Last time I checked this was still a democracy. People who actually take the time to read the bill could see that it is full of pork and non stimulative to the economy.
Pelosi tried to stuff the turkey and trim the tree and she is going to get exactly what she asked for. A democratic TRILLION DOLLAR spending package and that scares the hell out of the democrats.

Posted by: kaz | January 31, 2009, 12:16 am 12:16 am

None of these so called “stimulus” packages will help because they don’t address the root cause of the problem. Free trade is killing this country. The rest of the world is outraged by the prospect of an end to “free trade” with the US and “protectionism” in America. Why? Because it has vastly benefited them at our expense. They demand that the US honor these deals because it’s in their best interests, not ours. Our leaders will cave to their demands and the US economy will collapse as it continues to hemorrhage the wealth we have left, and make other countries rich and the US public poorer. “free trade” and off-shoring of US jobs has made company CEO’s wealthy and the rest of us poor. The US must end free trade so that middle class families can earn a decent wage, which will enable them to buy American made products and this stimulate the economy back to life, while ceasing the vicious downward spiral of buying more than is bought from us.

Good on Senator McCain ! And all other Republicans and Democrats who know this “Stimulus Bill” is a middle-class nightmare , that will destroy (as is) , not help the American worker! “LOLOLOLO” – The “NO DEBT” was due to a Republican Majority in Congress , not Clinton! He was too busy fighting sexual harassment and impeachment charges. Slick – Willy is partially responsible for 9-11( which lead to CONGRESS’S OVER-WHELMING VOTE TO INVADE IRAQ . IN WAR … YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BATTLE GROUND). Had Clinton been doing what he should have been doing in the “Oval Office”, instead of playing with interns — Mrs. Clinton (the master- mind) might have been able to read the intelligence reports and act accordingly. Clinton’s Presidential “success/surplus”, was due to a REPUBLICAN MAJORITY IN CONGRESS!

Posted by: Isabella | January 31, 2009, 3:23 am 3:23 am

The whole issue of the stimulus came about while Pres Obama was in transition and the republicans are just now coming up with a plan. Everyone says the bill is not perfect and everyone knows that there is a process in which the bill will be modified as it goes along. The president indicated and called for ideas from as far back as Nov that he wanted to start the process early so that we can get some relief, and they are just now preparing
a plan, which may delay the bill.
I personally have been affected by the murder suicides that have made headlines due to job loss, or elderly people dying because they can’t pay their bills.
I also wonder why we can never hear the details of their plans. The house repubs had a plan where is the website that I can go to read it. Its so frustrating that I agree with Michael Steele statement which should be applied that Dems are willing to work with you for the good of the American people, but if you are going to obstruct us then we will just have to run you over.

Posted by: Donna | January 31, 2009, 3:51 am 3:51 am

The stimulus plan will do nothing to create jobs. It’s a trillion dollars of pork- just a wishlist of everything the democrats have ever wanted to spend money on. It won’t create jobs, it won’t do anything but provide a short term jolt to the economy.
the republicans should be rejoicing. In 2010, Obama will face a midterm election, very much like Clinton did in 1996. If the economy is still in the toilet, and republicans can run saying they all knew Obama was a tax and spend liberal democrat who can’t be trusted.

Go to Economy.com There is a break down on how effective every part of the stimulus is. We only get 30 cents for every $1 of corporate tax breaks. We get $1.59 for infrastructure repair & we get to drive over safe bridges. What a concept.

If the republicans can wean themselves from only coming up with ideas that benefit the wealthy – they might have something value to add to the discussion.
Hernando County Florida – unemployment has shot up to almost 11%. This state needs infrastructure investment badly – not more tax breaks for the wealthy while we sit on our thumbs imagining some little bit might trickle down. NOT.

Now suddenly, with a perfect record of FAILURE, you are going to guide us out of the morass YOU created with your stupid policies and wrong-headed lack of ideas? Now you are the big experts?
Is that why the public turned you out of power during this last election, because they know who put them in the poorhouse and punished your party accordingly?
Well, I hope Cactus John with his record of do-nothing-really-significant in the Senate, who ran a disgracefully slanderous and evil campaign, will now be the beacon of light when he already admitted he knows nothing about the economy.
Well, I love the GOP’s gall and hubris. They still don’t get it. They are failures and they still act like they’re flushed with success.
The only thing “bi-partisan” gets us is delay and watering down of desperately needed, urgent measures to stem the economic bleeding. We don’t need this obstructionist party to do what it does so well…screw the poor and middle class some more.

mccain was quoted during the campaign as not wanting to talk about the economy since it was not a strong area for him, or words along that line. now he is an expert on the economy? mccain should retire. as for stimulous packages, they have all been nothing but opportunities for the rich and powerful to continue their greedy and corrupt ways. obama, congress, all of them, are giving away free money without strict accountability. why not? after all, the money is not coming out of their pockets but the pockets of “we the people” so the greedy and corrupt can continue to profit.

Interesting how so many assume Bush was the one who spent all that money when Congress is the only branch that can authorize spending any money…including presidential “discretionary” funds. Without Congressional approval, no president has money to spend. Democrats controlled Congress for the past two years yet there was no decrease in spending.
Also interesting how Bush was accused of ignoring the will of the people by the same fokls who are now praising the Democrat Congress and the Democrat president for ignoring the will of at least 75% of the people who oppose this pork barrel legislation.

Michael – Isn’t it a bit of an exaggeration that NO ONE likes John McCain, when almost 1/2 of the country voted for him?

Posted by: ellsbells930 | February 1, 2009, 1:23 pm 1:23 pm

The democrats in Congress have proven that they are the party with no new ideas. Economists agree that the spending in this bill will not stimulate the economy this year. You are free to call John McCain any name you want. He gave up so much to give you that right. But I am thankful that Republicans will not roll over for a terrible bill. This bill is supposed to create jobs, not pay for the democrats’ pet programs of the last eight years. The stimulus bill, in it’s current state, will not stimulate the economy.

He’s a looser! When are we going to get some genuinely caring people in the party who aren’t only about what is best for themselves and not for all Americans.

Regardless of who you support Rep. or Dem. This bill is a sham, and does nothing to stimulate the economy. Economists have been saying for over a year now that throwing money at the problem will not fix it, it will only accelerate and put us into a depression or worse collaspse the US.

McCains and fellow republicans plan: More bailouts for wealthy CEO’s and millionaires. They also want to send the rest of our jobs overseas where child labor can produce products cheaper.

Obviously the Supporters of
President Obama and the Congressional
Democrats are too dumb to understand
the situation so I’ll repeat it.
The Democrats have large majorities in the House and Senate.
You don’t need Republican support of
this Non-Stimulative, Wasteful Spending
Bill! Stop looking for cover.
Stop Whining. Pass the Bill.
It’s that simple. You get the glory or
the blame!

Did you frigging republicans worry about
that when you were crowing about how
great and honorable Bush was while he
ran up the national debt? How much has
Iraq cost us? The repubs spent like
drunken sailors for seven years and
now they are “conservative” again. What
BS.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to hear this guy anymore? He picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. He ran his presidential campaign from the sewer. He doesn’t seem to grasp economic issues in any sense.
He is still singing that old song that the answer to our problems is to make tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations permanent. In other words, we should make permanent the policies that helped get us into this mess in the first place. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.

I would be one of the Democrats who opposed this stimulus package. It’s not big enough and I think there should be a more targeted short term package and all the extras the Dems have thrown in like smoling cessation, family planning and STD’s, National Endowment of the Arts and such should be put throw on it’s own accord or in a separate package. I support those extras but not in a stimulus package, that’s nonsense and the Dems are throwing anything they can in that they’ve wanted to tackle for sometime and couldn’t, to take advantage
of this situation. I support the increases in unemployment benefits, food stamps, medicaid and other programs targeting those struggling the most but I also want to see more in the way of middle class tax cuts rather then just $13 per paycheck temporarily.
I don’t agree with the GOP on more corporate tax cuts or for the rich but this is not a great package the House put out and let’s wake up Dems and not just blindly support it because it’s the Dems who put it together. The Dems had their hands also in the creation of this economic mess so let’s not be too naive here.

McCain as President would actually attack the pork issue head on. Too bad America voted for image over substance. :(

yep mike no pork just huge tax cuts for the rich that have got us in this mess…and you know what most programs that help the poor and needy are what republicans call pork…

McCain, the man who helped to sell out the American icon Budweiser to a foreign entity, as well as almost hand a foreign defense contractor control of a huge portion of America’s defense capability, hasn’t a clue. What McCain would like to do is provide more tax loopholes for foreign ownership of American industry, so our capital and jobs can continue to move overseas. This statement by McCain, {“Said McCain: “I have to tell you I’m disappointed so far in the administration’s lack of consultation or efforts to work with Republicans on the stimulus package.”} flies in the face of arrogance. I don’t recall a single Republican going to the Obama administration and saying, look here, we need to work together to develop a plan to get America out of this fix.

McCain is a back stabber. If you think he hasn’t forgotten how he got beaten by Pres. Obama you are as crazy as Limbaugh. It was disgusting how he pandered to Limbaugh. He has already said economy was not his strong point. Republicans are soooo smart all of a sudden, after getting the US. in this mess.

IN THE NAME OF GREED, MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE COMMITTING FRAUD. THEY ARE DELIBERATELY NOT PAYING THEIR MORTGAGES TO QUALIFY FOR THE BAILOUT. MAYBE, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL THE BAILOUT WAS APPROVED BEFORE ANNOUNCING, “WE ARE ONLY GOING TO BAILOUT 90 DAY LATE MORTGAGES.” THIS IS WHY PEOPLE ARE COMMITTING FRAUD. IN NOVEMBER, I MET A LADY WHO WAS NOT PAYING HER MORTGAGE BECAUSE HER LANDLORD DECIDED TO RAISE HER LOAN BY 24,000. ARE LENDERS DELIBERATELY FORCING PEOPLE INTO FORECLOSURE IN ORDER TO CLAIM A BAILOUT FOR DEFAULT LOANS? I WAS THINKING, “INSTEAD USING THE BAILOUT TO REWARD GREED, WHAT ABOUT USING THE MONEY TO MAKE BUYING A HOME EASIER. THE SPIRIT OF GREED WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US. WHICH MEANS, “UNLESS THERE IS STRICT REGULATION, THE MORTGAGE CRISIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.” WHAT ABOUT REGULATING THE ‘GREEDY’ PEOPLE WHO TRAVEL AROUND THE COUNTRY BUYING UP ‘AFFORDABLE’ HOMES AND FLIPPING AT ‘UNAFFORDABLE’ PRICES?” THE SAD PART IS, “AFTER THEY MAKE A PROFIT, THEY RETURN HOME TO THEIR STATE OF RESIDENCE LEAVING THE LOCAL RESIDENTS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT WITH THE HEAD ACHE OF TRYING TO SELL ‘UNAFFORDABLE’ HOMES.” THIS IS NOT FAIR TO THE LOCALS OR THE CITY GOVERNMENT. IN ORDER TO PREVENT ANOTHER MORTGAGE CRISIS, “WE HAVE TO STOP THE PRACTICE OF FLIPPING HOMES AT UNFORDABLE PRICES.” WITHIN A POOR TO MIDDLE CLASS NEIGHBORHOOD, “THERE SHOULD BE A LIMIT ON HOW MUCH THE COST OF A HOME CAN APPRECIATE.” IT IS LUDIRIS FOR PEOPLE TO EXPECT THE PRICE TO REAJUST BACK TO THE PRICE BEFORE THE MORTGAE CRISIS. THE PRICES WERE BASED ON GREED; NOT REALITY. IN ORDER TO PREVENT ANOTHER MORTGAGE CRISIS, RECOGNIZE THE 2 SIGNS, “TOO MANY ‘EMPTY’ HOUSES IN YOUR CITY. AND, IT TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE PAYING ONLY THE INTEREST ON THE LOAN.”

FOR ‘BAD’ AIR QUALITY DAYS, THE STATE OF CALIORNIA HAS A PROGRAM CALLED, “SPARE THE AIR DAY.” THE CONCEPT OF ‘SPARE’ THE ‘AIR’ DAY IS TO ENCOURAGE COMMUTERS TO LEAVE THEIR CARS AT HOME AND TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ‘FREE’ OF CHARGE. I WAS THINKING, “WHAT ABOUT USING THE STIMILUS MONEY FOR A ‘GROW THE ECONOMY DAY OR WEEKEND?” ON THIS DAY, MERCHANTS ACROSS THE NATION WOULD AGREE TO SELL THEIR MERCHANDISE AT THE ‘BLOW OUT’ PRICES OF 2008. THE ‘GROW’ THE ECONOMY DAY WILL BE SIMILAR TO THE WEEKEND FOLLOWING THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY. REMEMBER, IN 2008, MOST AMERICANS HAD NO MONEY. INSTEAD OF SPENDING MONEY, THEY COULD ONLY ‘WINDOW’ SHOP. FOR 2 DAYS, AMERICANS COULD ENJOY THE ‘GREAT DEALS’ THEY MISSED IN 2008. ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE DEALS OF 2008 WAS CAR DEALERSHIP SELLING CARS AT 2 FOR 1.

To : John McCain or GOP haters,
I am surprised with your puerile judgment that American most biggest deal, the stimulus bill, 819 Billions Dollars are being still embroiled in your emotional and useless dregs from campaign of John McCain in 2008. PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!! and READ why McCain/GOP are against the bill. Obama’s stimulus that never can increase 3.5 millions jobs and revenue will guarantee America go to bankruptcy within two years if DNC pass the bill as follows :
$360 million for helping of ABORTION to some Africa countries.
$150 million for 3 hour inauguration.
$20 million for aid of GAZA, HAMAS group
$335 million for education related to sexually transmitted diseases
$1,000 million for aid of ACORN that is under FBI investigate w/VOTE-FRAUD.
$650 million for coupons to help people make the switch to digital TV
$50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts
$150 million for the Smithsonian Institution
$50 million for the National Cemetery Administration’s monument and memorial repairs
$800 million for Amtrak, the country’s railroad system
$400 million for global warming research
$100 million for reducing the danger of lead paint in homes
$2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects
$50 million for NASA facilities that may have been harmed by natural disaster
$200 million for the U.S. Geological Survey to monitor earthquakes and volcanoes
DO YOU THINK OBAMA’S THE STIMULUS CAN SAVE 3.5 MILLION JOBS after SPENDTHRIFT all money ? NEVER.

Posted by: DNC must be changed | February 2, 2009, 12:37 pm 12:37 pm

Thank goodness someone is working on an alternative. There would be a lot more support for a stimulus package if it weren’t a $800 billion+ number with little hope of creating any real jobs – just temporary jobs on road crews. The current economic stimulus package is a record-breaking amount of money and it’s more of a spending plan then an economic stimulus plan.

“McCain postponed his campaign in September to address the financial crisis – didn’t do squat then, and I doubt that he will do squat now!” Posted by: Sandee
The plan to address the “financial crisis” in October was endorsed by Obama, Bush, Pelosi, Reid and others – not just McCain. We know now that it was a huge failure. Because we know that, should we continue doing the same thing – spending money, going deeper in debt and ignoring the real reasons for this recession – or should we try something new? To me, trying something new seems a bit more reasonable, and it doesn’t matter who you voted for. The plan proposed by Obama is too expensive for this country – it’s a record-breaking amount of money that he wants to spend with no real indication that it will actually stimulate the economy.

“$2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects” – that’s probably my favorite, and I’m sure Al Gore approves.
Funny thing is that, this $2.4 billion is just for demonstrations – who knows if they’ll actually capture any carbon.
And once they do capture it, what exactly do they intend to do with it?

# The House of Representatives debated the bill for eight hours, or roughly $102 billion per hour.
# Only 10 percent of the stimulus funds would be spent in 2009.
# Almost half of the $820 billion would end up in the pockets of Democratic-controlled unions, such as the Service Employees International Union, and federal, state, and municipal employee unions.
# At 680 pages long, neither Obama nor any member of the House had enough time to read the entire bill before the House voted.
# The $820 billion would be enough to give every unemployed American $75,000.

McCain’s plan is more tax cuts. No spending – just tax cuts. Doesn’t matter that less Americans have jobs. It’s the GOP mantra. My understanding is that the stimulus bill already has $275 billion in tax cuts. I assume that also extends from middle and lower income Americans to small businesses who the GOP is so worried about. McCain never really understood the economy back in 2008 and didn’t choose Romney who everybody in the GOP said would help magically fix our economy. Romney is the kind of cold CEO who wouldn’t think twice about cutting costs by laying off employees in this economy rather than finding other inventive ways of cutting costs.

I guess Obama’s not as quite as clever as he thought he was. So far so bad. Did anyone really think he was serious about change? Looks like the same old bunch of idiots, liars and cheats to me. As far as a stimulus package, how about collecting no federal taxes for a while.

Posted by: AmericanPie | February 3, 2009, 10:48 am 10:48 am

President Obama is on his way to make a very threatening mistake. He is putting forth a stimulus package that is overloaded with pork and other useless spending. He claims to want to create a bipartisan government but, is failing to allow the contribution of Republicans. When only three Republicans voted in favor of this bill, Obama should have take the initiative to allow negotiations. When I refer to negotiations I am not talking about appeasements. I am talking about combining the ideals of both parties to create the best possible stimulus package. The other major problem with this package is that the long terms affects are not anylzed enough. Democrats talk about how republicans were only focused on the short term improvements, especially in regards to President Bush. Well, I have yet to hear that this stimulus package takes into consideration the long term effects. As a matter of fact I am apprehensive about the good effects the Democrats promise.
