More Daschle Tax Issues

ABC News has obtained the Senate Finance Committee Report on Tom Daschle’s nomination to be Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which indicates that Daschle’s tax problems were even more substantial than earlier reported.

The report indicates that Daschle’s failure to pay more than $101,000 taxes on the car and driver a wealthy friend let him use from 2005 through 2007 is not the only tax issue the former Senate Majority Leader has been dealing with since his December nomination prompted a more thorough examination of his income tax returns.

Mr. Daschle also didn’t report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007.

The Senate Finance Committee Report also notes that during the vetting process, President Obama’s Transition Team "identified certain donations that did not qualify as charitable deductions because they were not paid to qualifying organizations.  Daschle adjusted his contribution deductions on his amended returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to remove these amounts and add additional contributions." This adjustment meant a reduction in the amount he contributed to charitable foundations of $14,963 from 2005 through 2007.

With the unreported income from the use of a car service in the amounts of $73,031 in 2005, $89,129 in 2006 and $93,096 in 2007; the unreported consulting income of $83,333 in 2007; and the adjusted reductions in charitable contributions, Daschle adds a total of $353,552 in additional income and reduced donations, meaning an additional tax payment of $128,203, in addition to $11,964 in interest.

On January 2 of this year, Daschle filed amended tax returns to pay the $140,167 in unpaid taxes.

The Finance Committee staff still is reviewing whether travel and entertainment services provided Tom and Linda Daschle by EduCap, Inc., Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, Academy Achievement, and Loan to Learn should be reported as income.  Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Daschle made use of the jet belonging to EduCap, a non-profit student loan organization.

“during the vetting process, President Obama’s Transition Team…”
Seems to me the IRS should hire the Obama vetting team. They seem to be more thorough at looking at these things.

Why should it matter this is just HHS….same thing in Treasury.
Sounds to me like Obama has the “Tax Cheats Club” vs the “Gentleman’s Club”

Jake thank you for reporting on this. Most of the liberal media are glossing over it.
Obama should ask him to step down before he goes for confirmation. How can Obama expect regular americans to pay their income tax when his own cabinet will not.

I see elitism alive and well, as usual, in Washington DC and its “Political Population”. We have a group of people who consider it perfectly normal (and expected) to lie, manipulate facts, and cheat to avoid being burdened with those things average citizens have to endure. Things such as paying taxes and obeying the laws of our country. Not only do they consider it normal, they consider themselves a special class (Royalty, Lords & Ladies) above us mere peasants. They aren’t there to serve the public good, but themselves. Which explains the bailouts and other recent events.

These government people sure want the rest of us to pay our taxes but they want to welsh on paying theirs. Oh well, just tell Obama to pen another waiver for his corrupt nominee just like he did for the others who failed his no lobbyist in his administration rule. After all, Obama tells us this is change we can believe, but we aren’t as stupid as he thinks we are.

Many people like to attack “liberals” and the supposed liberal media.
During the election I found out that many people would consider me to be a liberal.
Being a liberal does not mean someone does not believe in honesty.
Obama should withdrawal Daschle nomination. There is no excuse for him not paying the taxes. Every federal employee receives annual training on ethics. Paying income taxes is an ethics requirement.
I propose a vetting process for every member of Congress.
Obama should also not have a waiver for the latest lobbyist. His stance on lobbyist was one of the major reasons I backed him rather than Hillary.

That’s Right – You are smart enough to realize having 50% of the appointees be lobbiests is exactly as bad having 5% of them being lobbyists! In the same way that speeding should be treated just like murder: They’re both crimes and I’m not stupid enough to believe a crime’s not a crime!

Let’s look at this not as a criticism of President Obama. That will take the party out of the issue, but what kind of example does it set to appoint people who don’t pay their taxes? I’m sure the transition team didn’t think (when they considered Daschle) that he violated tax laws, but now they know, so do the right thing, withdraw his nomination.

Why do we never hear of penaltys as well as interest being paid?
Is the calculation on interest correct? In total it is about 8.5% but some of the income tax that the interest applies to goes back 3 years.
If this keeps up we will be able to afford condoms and bee insurance with all the extra revenue garnered from the executive appointments. Now if only Charlie would pay up…..

smith: “Why do we never hear of penaltys as well as interest being paid? ”
Oh, the penalty is being paid. If you really care, the calculations are publicly available from irs.gov for how penalties and interest are calculated in amended returns. If I recall correctly, they are lumped together so you don’t actually calculate a separate penalty it’s just a multiplier on the interest.

The fact that these guys can’t drive themselves around themselves is pathetic, but to then not pay your taxes correctly on all of these things is criminal. This goes for Geitner too. I realize we can’t appoint Ron Paul to every position in order to get integrity, but surely there are a few honest folks to choose from. Really sad. And yes dems, the reps are corrupt to the core too.

Posted by: Huh | January 31, 2009, 12:42 am 12:42 am

We should not punish Senator Daschle for his refusal to pay taxes. Why would he want to give a single dollar to Bush & Cheney? I admire his courage to stand up and deprive a government that opposed his views.
Indeed, the greatest thing about President Obama is that his appointments have legally validated the refusal to pay income taxes for any persons who find any governmental action offensive. The single greatest IRS man in the nation decided to pocket over five years of income taxes simply out of disinterest. This sets an important precedent as any cause, should it be disinterest, political objection, etc. is a valid foundation for nonpayment of taxes.
This year, make up whatever deductions you want. If Iraq is an unjust war, deduct the appropriate percentage to take out the military expenditures. If you find it unacceptable that Congress has stolen your social security money, deduct your entire social security withholdings (since you will be required to pay the “loan” they took out back). If you’re disgusted that Congress has voted themselves payraises and bonuses while bitching about Wall Street bonuses, then simply reduce that IRS payment even further.

Tom Daschle does not add any value to an Obama administration. He doesn’t represent change. He’s a Washington insider. Mr. Obama – you held yourself out to be the change President. We’re not seeing much change at all, in terms of moving away from politics as usual. I’ve been giving you the benefit of the doubt, but the doubt is beginning to take a bit of root. So much for the Obama vetting process. So much for change.
He has nominated one person that had to withdraw (Richardson), two people who are tax cheats (Geithner & Daschle), one person who is a self identified socialist (Browner), one person who was involved in the pay for play scandal in Chicago (Emanuel), one person that was heavily involved in the corruption at Fannie and Freddie (holder), one person tightly tied to the sub-prime mortgage fiasco (Summers),and a vice president that is incapable of sanity for more than a few minutes at a time.
The audacity of hope has instead become the audacity of arrogance. There is no hope to be found.
This is what all the hype was about? Sad day for America…

Lobbyists WILL have a job in his administration. The Deputy Secretary of Defense was a lobbyist for Raytheon just last summer, and the Chief of Staff for the Secretary of Treasury was a lobbyis for Goldman Sachs last week. “This was an honest mistake …”
“The problems facing Americans regarding health care are too serious to quibble over petty issues such as these …”
“Tom Daschle is too important, his expertise too vast, we must confirm him and do so quickly or else children in America will face dire consequences …”
SPARE ME. RUN THIS CHUMP OUT OF TOWN.

What a joke some of these Obama picks are…after promising during the campaign that it would not be more of the same…I don’t see any CHANGE in this administration. NONE. NADA. And the bailout is full of PORK. Not what Obama said during his campaign. Obama is not about CHANGE, rather more of the SAME. Say anything to get elected. Watch his popularity continue to slide.

Why is this adminstration having so much trouble finding people who are without tax problems? Is the appointment pay off for getting Obama elected? A person cannot be hired at an entry level position at the IRS if they have had a small hiccup at anytime. This is not Daschel’s first rodeo, so has this been ignored in the past or covered up?

What is the deal with all of the libs in politics. Whether it’s Charle Rangel, Tom Daschle, Tim Geithner, William Jefferson, or one of the many others, it just seems they have no shame. The demand that we pay our taxes and act responsibly yet they all act like they are above the law.
The arrogance displayed by the left and typified by these people is just incredible.

Posted by: Ron | January 31, 2009, 11:26 am 11:26 am

To Obama’s credit, during the vetting process his team uncovered these tax issues and made sure Daschle corrected them. The unreported consulting fees are especially problematic. That seemed very straightforward – he was paid direct compensation that he didn’t pay as income. That would seem to be more than just an oversight.

Obama is not qualified to be president and it is showing. He says no lobbyists, then promptly appoints lobbyists. His secretary of treasury is a tax evader. Daschle is just the next tax cheat to be nominated. It is no wonder these guys support tax increases on the rich, they don’t pay them anyway. I believe that Obama is the biggest mistake the electorate has ever made. Now he wants to cut military budgets by 10% and feed the money into welfare. Everybody I know is already sick of Obama.

What I also don’t understand is why this is just surfacing now — if Daschle had been an average business person he would have been audited out the wazoo and been in jail by now for tax evasion. Democracy Corps has released a poll that shows Obama’s approval rating is down to 55%. This is a huge drop in a very short time – I belive incidents like this and with Geithner have seriously harmed obama. Obama is not through the first month of his administration and the wheels are already coming off the messiah wagon.

@smearjay “What Deficit, as long as Obama keeps nominating folks that Owe $30,000 to $100,000 in back taxes and they end up paying eventually, we are going to get caught up real quick.”
I must say, that is a brilliant take. If we could get Obama to cycle through a thousand liberal cabinet members who each owe $140,000 in back taxes, we could raise $140 Million dollars (almost enough to pay for the Obama inauguration bill). If we cylced through 10 million liberal cheats we would have more than enough money to pay for the whole stimulus plan without burdening the American people who are actually paying their taxes.

The IRS tax system is just too complicated for an average American and so as you get to above average you need to have to take professional advice and the professional advice may be inadequate in picking up on errors and so in the case of the secretary designate Tom Dascle it could be some kind of error that he did not pick up which the efficient Obama transition team picked up. I have serious doubts whether a honorable man like Tom Dascle would have intentionally filed wrong tax returns so that he could profit from the mistake. Additionally one cannot ignore the potential of Tom Dascle to become an effective secretary of DHHS. If we start rejecting people of the caliber of Dascle and get bureaucrats (who always just had salaried jobs with simple with holdings) to run the Departments we will never get people who are innovative and will chart new territories and have new ideas.

Now that must be some good Kool Aid. We are to believe that cheating on your taxes indicates an “innovative” mind? Charting “new territories” doesn’t usually involve breaking the law, does it?
Seriously, if this were a Republican he would have been destroyed by now. As he should have been. This is not change. Obama has said he wants us to hold him accountable. Why should we not follow through on that statement?

So what does this say about members of Congress that affirm a Treasury Sec’y into office and than another joker (Daschle) into DHH knowing that they have not upheld the standards that honest American citizens conform to when paying their taxes. This is one of the methods in how the American Govmt. operates by persons paying taxes. There should NOT BE DIFFERENT STANDARDS FOR THE ELITE against the average citizen. Those that voted for these (and others of immoral character) need to step down out of your position because of your lack of GOOD JUDGEMENT. You can not set back and ridicule the Wall St. CEO CROOKS who took big bonuses and cared nothing about their employees and than sanction the above persons to HIGH OFFICE. Of the eight Dems candidates wanting to be president in the first tv-debate, only one of them did not have a plan for universal health care. Who do you think the Dems ended up nominating?
With Daschle-staff, filled coffins and endorsements from the insurance industry lobbyists and do-nothing-health care advocates like Ted Kennedy. Barack Obama won the day. He got there by trashing Hillary Clinton and screwing the left.
Don’t expect Obama to give USA better health any time soon. He is the best example I’ve seen of what is wrong with US politics. I thought John Kerry over Howard Dean was the lowest. And Bush junior. Take Tom Daschle and put him in jail along with Wesley Snipes. Funny he must have made an honest mistake also. It didnot help him at all. Tom D is vying for another job such as a cabinet post. The only post he should see is one that he is tied to and flogged. Is it not strange that a man & his wife who bring in over 1 million a year along with free EduCap plane for personal use along with cadilacs for their own personal use cant remember what they owe in icome at tax time. Do you want someone this stupid and I do mean stuped running our health and other Government agencies. Please get him into prison. If I did what he did I would be tried, crucified and buried in prison. You people who voted this new team into office deserve what you get.

I read every one of the preceding comments. I salute the writers who took the time to express an opinion. I would certainly expect ABC news to read and subequently realize they spent a of time and money on a candidate and a party they didn’t properly vet and to express that sentiment to the public via their media. As for this Presidency and the ongoing economic crisis, I fear the worst is yet to come.

What is sad is this.
The uneducated throngs of Obama supporters who put him in office won’t know about any of this nonsense.
The only time their ears open is when they hear the words “handout” or “entitlement”
Our country is truly being run from the bottom up, just like Obama promised.
And for you liberal goons who keep insulting Bush… realize this….
Bush was no conservative.
He kept us safe for 8 years, but his government spent money like a drunken liberal – and he spend the last for years kissing liberal hind ends…

When he sweats…. golden drops of hope sprinkles down to the desperate widows below.
When he uses the restroom…..hope fills our souls.
Obama is called the messiah because he is the messiah.
And it’s time for you to bow low before the mighty Obama.
When Obama travels to your town… you should throw your coats down in front of his path, so his feet knoweth not a puddle of dispair.
If Obama gazes upon you, and you manage to survive it… You must go to a church and confess your sins.
If Obama passes gas in your general direction… you are blessed with the sweet smell of hope and change you can believe in

Obama has been up to his neck in this kind of corruption for a very long time now.
He’s already broken some 20 campaign promises in one way or another.
He’s already doing what he says you and I should not do.
The only promises he’s seems intent on keeping are to let terrorists go… let terrorists be treated as US citizens and turn our country into a socialist nation.

The liberals say we must help the disadvantged when enacting social programs. But do they really care about those in need? Obviously not, when they cheat on their taxes which are used to fund the programs they enacted. Could it be their motivation is not caring for the “poor” but buying their vote with the taxes paid by the honest citizens??

IT IS NOT TAX EVASION when the tax error is presented by the taxpayer (and/or their tax preparer) TO the IRS.
The matter is satisfied when the tax is paid with penalties and interest
Take a few minutes to become informed before you rant on and on… you are on the internet, this isn’t difficult to research.
PS — The IRS wants MONEY, they don’t want people in jail… they DO NOT as a rule, criminalize tax errors without serious consideration and proof of intent to defraud them.

As far as impeachment — it is a LEGISLATIVE action and …. uh, in case you haven’t noticed, the US Legislature is controlled by the President’s own party. Not to mention — he hasn’t done anything that has a hint of cause for impeachment.

I didn’t say he doesn’t know how to do his taxes.
But that is a valid point…. there are very few people with the kinds of income Daschle has that can do their own taxes. The code is byzantine to say the least.
Most people in his tax bracket have other people prepare taxes. My mother is in that bracket and she has had issues… from legitimate errors… that her “guy” didn’t report because SHE didn’t know she had to inform him and he didn’t ask because he had other customers or whatever… see, it can be a mess.
Whoops! I hope she doesn’t lose her seat at the bridge club ;-)
Really, this is a lot to do about not so much.
If you tip your server at a restaurant tonight… in cash — dollars to doughnuts, no tax will be paid on that money…. should we ream ‘em all a new one…?

Typical fare of the the ones who will help the “little guys”. Give government money[my and others who pay taxes] and then don’t pay taxes because you made a “mistake” while you are actually part of the government who ordains the tax. This would be ludicris if it weren’t so sad. But we can all have “hope” in these who are so supreme to those they will rule.

serena…are you actually comparing Daschle’s situation to a waitress allegedly not reporting all tips? WOW. I still can’t believe you are trying to justify this guy’s actions. He’s responsible for telling his accountant of ALL income and ALL charitable contributions. Even if he supposedly didn’t know that the free chauffer service should have been reported (which I’m not buying), he DEFINITELY should have reported the consulting income. What, you think the accountant is going to say, “Hey, what about that consulting work you did?” or “Hey, are you sure that those donations were actually to charitable organizations?” GIVE ME A BREAK!

Serena…..Our byzantine tax system is a major problem; agreed. But to allow a person being considered for high public office to blame his tax preparer for errors; just doesn’t make common sense. This amount of money doesn’t compare to small tips a waiter may make.

Posted by: pleaseBtrue | January 31, 2009, 5:38 pm 5:38 pm

Didn’t vet his appointments.
Signed an order to close Gitmo without a plan or hearing back from judges to suspend detainee’s new found Constitutional rights to a speedy trial. Now he has to either withdraw the charges of roughly 20 detainees or proceed with arraignments.
He is now on pace to out spend Bush’s first 4 years in his first year.
NOBODY who actually looked at the spending in this “stimulus” bill likes it, except a few Keynesians trying to make a come back and he still vows “to stay the course”.
His aides now say he may ask for more money for bank bailouts than the remaining TARP funds.
He has states lining up for handouts.
And now it’s clear the Congressional Democrats plan on steam rolling this light weight.

I have a client who gets 1/2 an hour a month from me. He pays my phone bill. So, what servces dgot provided i exchange for the services providd to daschle?

I know a lot of people have housekeepers, and pay them ‘under the table’. Probably a LOT of the GOP Senators, too. Is this a surprise to ANYone? Does this make Daschle incompetent? No. No more than you’d turn the fire truck away if your house was on fire because all the guys in the truck have other jobs they don’t report income from. Be honest about this. Posted by: Mike Colby | February 1, 2009, 2:44 am 2:44 am

What did people expect from a president from the most corrupt political machine in the country????
Perhaps when Americans get fed up enough, the press can finally engage in some actual journalism and revisit the stories they refused to cover during the election. Like how Obama paid precisely the same amount under market value for his mansion that convicted felon Tony Rezko paid over value for his? Or how Obama just happened to win his first two elections by having his opponents divorce records unsealed. Or perhaps we’ll find out exactly why Obama was trying to hide $850,000 in payment to ACORN. Or why his campaign intentionally removed security programs that prevented illegal online contributions. Or perhaps the press will figure out that simply accepting Obama’s assurance that his staff wasn’t involved in the Blago scandal isn’t what is typically known as good journalism.
That is if they can pry their lips from his posterior long enough.
The entire Washington press corps is filled with nothing but liberal Jeff Gannon’s.

Posted by: OneObservation | February 1, 2009, 11:50 am 11:50 am

Taxes, penalties and interest should be paid and that is non-partisan. The bigger issue is that the tax system is too complicated for anyone to correctly complete the form and allows obfiscation by dishonest people or honest mistakes.
I worry about people that govern when they can’t perform life’s simple tasks like driving themselves, managing their real estate or caring for their children, shopping and preparing meals….

Leaving aside the question of WHY a “non-profit” that makes loans to un-rich students HAS a porivate jet, HOW can the “Obama” organization be planning to palm this guy off on US citizens AGAIN, when his own state finally managed to get rid of him in public office?
Doing away completely with non-profit tax status would be a jolly good thing, as would investigating the tax and corporate connections — aside from the obvious CAMPAIGN financing, of course — of EVERY member of the Congress.

Danny, the cabinet consists of more than four people. Two of those who have been nominated have been found to have issues regarding paying income tax. One of these has already been confirmed — that, by both Dems and Repubs.
The other man you mention is not a cabinet member, he is US Representative from NY 15th District – Charles Rangel and he is not the chairman of the ethics committee — he chairs the “House Committe on Ways and Means”. He is, indeed being investigated by the House Ethics Committee (as well he and ANY other member of Congress regardless of their political affiliation should be).

The nice thing about Rangel is that — unlike, say, Geithner and Daschle — he’s more Obama-like: “popular” and “black”.
Any poster who isn’t either in the government or a dedicated observer thereof might be mistaken as to which tier of on-the-take — state or federal, House or Senate, Democrat or Republican — any particular politician (other than the supposedly post-partisan Puppet, who indeed has coverted the formerly-”Democratic” Party to the ends of the “Obama” organization) occupies.
It’s GOOD that people comment. Otherwise, they might be out parking cars in the freeway interchanges, or however OUR General Strike is going to start …

There won’t be a “general strike” — even if you tap your toes together an wish very, very hard!
Did you forget you and your opinion are in the minority.

Dopey Joe Biden said during the campaign
that it is “our patriotic duty to
pay more taxes”!
Does that make Geithner and Daschle
Traitors? Hypocrite Thy Name Is
Democrat!

I believe I have heard say that politics are sort of corrupt in Chicago… Obama and how many more in his administration are from there. Makes me wonder what are we in for when we thought we were in for a change we could believe in…huh.

How many of us can trust Tom Daschle, a tax evader/cheat/avoider to be anything but a deceiver? Does the prez really think he can get us to believe this is “change we can believe in?”

I’m totally dismayed at the antics wealthy politicians are pulling over on the “real” workers. No one should be confirmed if they are not totally 100% above board, and paid up on ALL taxes, PERIOD. No free rides.

Obama is bad news for decent people — IMPEACH him and his little dog Biden, too.

“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. Change we CAN’T believe in.

Can someone name the bogus charities Daschle claimed ?? That would be very telling.

Why aren’t they people outraged at what
Nancy and company tried to push off on the tax payers at a time when they tell us we need all the goverment help they can give us.And then load up a bill with more pork than any thing we have ever seen. They lie, cheat and steal from the American people behind the mask of helping us.I guess Obama is looking for a place in his cabnet for Blogo and Madoff they should fit right in with the rest of his honest group.

I voted for Obama and still think his ideas for getting this country through these bad economic times are sound. HOWEVER, that having been said, I must say I’m angry that he’s even CONSIDERING appointing people who not only do not pay their income taxes, but also act as if it’s nothing! Perhaps they would feel differently about it if they were ordinary people who have seen a relatively small mistake grow (with penalties and interest) until they owe the IRS a fortune — have their wages attached or even lose their homes– for a tax debt that they couldn’t pay. Perhaps they are so out of touch as to not realize how the IRS treats ordinary citizens. Why is it that the IRS hasn’t treated Congressmen the same way? How many other of our public servants in Washington owe back income taxes? I think Obama’s team ought to check out everyone in Congress and let their names be known to the public. Then he should prove to the American public there is no double standard. The laws have been on the books since they put Al Capone in prison for not paying his income tax.

Daschle no good. Obama is good. Why? The first is white, the latter – black. Why not say that both are liars, dishonest and unethical? Oh, Rangel is also good. You should all know why. He is not white.

While I can appreciate the points in More Daschle Tax Issues – ABC News, I am sick and tired of hearing rubbish about the “US economic recovery”. The Federal government borrowed and spent $6.1 trillion in the last four years to obtain a cumulative $700B rise in the nation’s Gross domestic product. That means we’ve borrowed and spent $8.70 for every $1 of nominal “growth” in Gross domestic product. In constant dollars, GDP is flat, we’ve got no “growth” at all for our $6.1 trillion. In constant dollars, the gross domestic product in 2011 might return to the 2007 level, if the US economy continues “growing” at the same pace reached inside the first three months of 2011. If not, then the GDP will actually be below pre-recession levels. There is no recovery, the numbers prove this.
