Moving Weekend for the Obama Family

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: The future first family is packing up their Chicago home and moving down to Washington, D.C. this weekend.

The move — earlier than most for incoming presidents –- was prompted by their daughters’ school schedule. Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, start school on Monday at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

Starting this weekend, the Obamas will be staying at a luxurious Washington, D.C. hotel, The Hay Adams, just across the street from the White House. On Jan. 15, the Obamas will switch temporary housing and stay at the Blair House, a guest house of the White House, until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

While Mrs. Obama and the Obama daughters ease into their new school schedule, President-elect Obama will continue to work on transition matters from the nation’s capital. With his cabinet already chosen, Obama transition aides say one of the top issues the President-elect focus on is the economic recovery plan.

The Obama’s will keep their Hyde Park family home in the South Side of Chicago, as the family intends to visit their hometown often.

I agree, with the egotistical comment. How people overlook this man’s past and his character is beyond me. What has he actually DONE other than running for office?
Blago and Obama…two peas in a pod.

realist,
you must not be from the usa,
because with as far as bush has brought us down, to wish obama falls on his backside, is to wish this country to fail.
and no patriotic american citizen would be waiting for that to happen.
because of the bush mess, all good americans are hoping this president will suceed and hence our country will get back up on its feet also.

So who is paying for the Hay Adams and the Hawaiian vacation? I am assuming the taxpayers.

Posted by: maryintampa | January 1, 2009, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

Excuse me, realist, but he’s NOT moving into the White House sooner than usual. He will move in on Inauguration Day, per usual, after a few days at Blair House, which is also usual. In the interim, he’s living in a hotel, because his daughters must start school on Monday. You’re failing in both logic and accuracy.

Always making changes at the beginning is difficult. Moving the kids to the hotel and from there, they go to school and back to hotel, is not convenient.
They are smart kids and I think easy to adjust.

It is the beginning of a new year and a new dawn for America. I wish the first family all the best in settling down in the beautiful and historic city of Washington, DC. I hope for the sake of the country and the world that Obama administration succeeds beyond all expectations in turning around the state of the nation. Watch for the back stabbers, the media sharks and ultraright wing bullies and the dangers lurking in the unexpected of places and everything will be fine. Everyone wants Obama to succeed and will be watching every move he makes and every step and breath he takes. One important lesson and the only valuable he should learn from GW is don’t let criticism get to you and there will be plenty of it, just stay the course and develop a thick skin. Try to resolve all issues without war and get the allies to share the burdens of global leadership and put America First at least for the first term in office. Other than that God speed President Obama and happy days for your family.

I am quite surprised by the jealousy and pettiness of some people who cannot bear to see a new president who is not of their party or does not have the same skin color as them. It is the greatness of American democracy that it weeds out the people at the fringes with prejudice and small minds and drives America to new heights of fairness.

DL 4:49:29 PM: Calm down. You have an internet connection, so expand your horizons beyond the rant talk shows. Start by reading about the difference between “Reaganomics” and the Bush administration’s interpretation of supply side economics. The past 8 years of financial deregulation failed our economy. The tax cuts for the rich failed to produce jobs. Spending TRILLIONS on 2 preemptive wars was not fiscal conservatism. Many economists believe fixing this mess will require Keynesian Economic shots in the arm, such as creating jobs to fix our crumbling infrastructure. This does not mean America will “become a socialist society.”

SureEnough08 – According to economist Nouriel Roubini, this biggest bailout and nationalization in human history has come from THIS conservative Republican president, the most fanatically and ideologically zealot free-market, laissez-faire administration in US history. And, the Census shows the number of people living under the poverty line rose by 5.7 million since Bush took office, to 12.5 percent of the population. The Bush Administration’s policies have already “blown the country into economic chaos”. Obama was elected (not solely by “Liberals” I might add) to move our country in a new direction. I wish him Godspeed.

Lee – you have it wrong – the Bush family is very much appreciated by the staff, especially the Secret Service. President and Mrs. Bush have always been kind and loving toward their staff and their families. Did you know that President Bush would personally take trays of food to his Secret Service staff while at his Texas home? Most people don’t know that. Their staff considers them lucky to have worked for the Bushes. You must be mixed up with the way Hillary and the Gores treated their staffs. No one wanted to work for them. You must also be mixed up about someone intelligent moving into the White House. No such family moving there anytime soon.

I can’t get over the FACT that when the older President Bush (Current President’s Dad) was in office, RUMSFIELD was over the military and Rumfield had meetings with Saddam Hussien – it is sad that we can’t see what was going on at that time and then when the Second Bush is in office, we all of a sudden are “attacked”??? – supposedly by Afganistan terrorists but somehow because of the Power of Suggestion of President Bush saying over and over and over and over “weapons of mass destruction” (by the way that was NEVER found) – we go into Iraq, tear the hell out of it, (Afganistan is all of a sudden not heard about)- now, Obama is getting ready to take office and that is all the news is talking about is Afganistan – we are being RIPPED OFF people, used as PAWNS! We need to WAKE UP before it is too late and also may I add- can anyone not see that gas went to nearly 5.00 a gallon and now it is at 1.48 (last time I checked ) – come on – give me a break – are we really that brainwashed and that stupid?? Now the Bush is going out of office and after he and Cheney and their cronie friends have made millions at the EXPENSE of our sons and daughters, come on – WAKE UP!!!!!!!

Maryintampa, since Obama is not yet the President, he paid for his own vacation in Hawaii (a state that is not an exotic vacation destination to him but merely “home,” where his sister and her family and his old friends live), and he will pay his own hotel bills. The taxpayers do pay for his Secret Service protection, as they paid for the protection of John McCain and Sarah Palin during the campaign.
Jane, I’m a white woman who lives in Hyde Park, Chicago, where my neighbors include many black doctors, lawyers, and business owners. I saw a black medical specialist last year, not knowing he was black when I was referred to him at the Hospitals of the University of Chicago. He turned out to be a hell of a lot smarter than my white primary-care physician. If it hadn’t been for him, I would have ended up having many unnecessary tests and much unnecessary anxiety. He was terrific. If you choose your doctors merely by the color of their skin, you may be shortchanging yourself and harming your health. You SHOULD choose them by reputation, education, and board certification. It doesn’t matter what color they are, because skin color means absolutely nothing.

CW, if you’re concerned about the expense of Barack Obama’s hotel stay then you must have really flipped over the expense of Bush’s dubious, secret trip to Iraq where he got the ultimate answer to “Who did I do?” … the ShoeFest.

Posted by: OverBush4Good | January 1, 2009, 7:03 pm 7:03 pm

“Who did I do” was meant to be “How did I do?” However, both apply in reference to Bush.

Posted by: OverBush4Good | January 1, 2009, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

CW – right on! It is totally beyond me what some of the people of this country were thinking when they voted for Obama – he’s a slick politician and so many people fell for it. I know many of them have already said they are regretting voting for him. What I find really funny is that if Obama goes ahead with his tax plan for small businesses, I know of several small business owners who will raise their prices (inflation) and when they have to lay off people, they will lay off people who voted for Obama and put their businesses in jeopardy! In the words of Joe Biden, “it’s only fair”!

Posted by: Ravenhair49 | January 1, 2009, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

Ravenhair, you somehow missed that Bush was a “slick politician”? He rode the machine, and the country, for all it was worth. Small Businesses come and go all the time. I’d be more concerned about the overall state of the country’s economy. I want ALL levels of people busy enough that won’t be tempted to steal the power tools out of my garage to make their rent. You can always start another business that capitalizes on the needs of the moment. It’s a matter of flexibility.

T — I can understand why Republicans stand for their ideology because some, not saying all, of the basic tenets sound highly plausible. However, when they have to lie and cheat to meet their objectives, their actions destroy the whole concept. They just can’t be trusted, and surely not trusted, to run this great Country. I am so over them and thankful for a new direction with, yes I am saying it, intelligent leadership.

Posted by: OverBush4Good | January 1, 2009, 7:21 pm 7:21 pm

Ravenhair49 – of course Obama is a politician. That’s his job. Stop the nastiness; it’s unbecoming. Try picturing the wealth in the United States as a three-piece pie. One piece is the top 1% of us. The second piece goes to the next richest 9%. The last third of the pie is all the rest. This wide inequality has created a bizarre economy over the past 8 years where tax cuts went to the rich, hedge fund CEOs were paid a billion, Middle Class jobs were outsourced, and US infrastructure crumbled. Republican supply side economics failed while the country bled Billions on 2 wars. If my country asks my small business to pay a bit more in taxes, we won’t be forced to raise prices or lay off people. God bless our new President and may he help the Untied States of America heal from recession, war, and world distain.

Business sure didn’t seem to mind when Clinton taxed them at rates higher than Obama has proposed (you can look up the documentation yourself, but more than just the internet business boomed and the budget was actually running a SURPLUS not a trillion dollar deficit).

We have had 8 years to see close up what Bush would do. We haven’t yet had a chance to see what Obama will do. I image all those who are convinced Obama will be a disaster, and those who think he will save mankind, will all be disappointed. However, I do predict that at the end of his presidency we will be much less eager to get rid of him than Bush. Let wait and see and hope for the best.

Posted by: factscount | January 1, 2009, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

overbush4good—–very true republicans love giveing to the top and hope it trickles down.instead of giving to the middle and you know it will get to the top. they just dont get it if teh middle class has more money they willspend more buying things from the rich allowing teh rich to pay the middle more so they can spend more buying from the rich. or give to the rich and they put the money in the bank or off shore account and it never gets to the middle. during the last 8 years companies had tax breaks from bush but did they hire more people or give good raises or cut insurance cost? no they just pocketed the money. that is why top down doesnt work but republicans will keep trying.

Posted by: T | January 1, 2009, 7:37 pm 7:37 pm

jhw539 – you’re absolutely right – Clinton balanced the budget right on the backs of our hard working military – it was his administration that would not spend the money for the protection our Army needed and that’s why we’ve had so many deaths in Iraq. Clinton’s hands are so dirty, nothing could ever clean them.

ravenhair—-well atleast the budget was balanced. funny how when democrats make cuts to balance budgets they cut from the top and the most costlt things, when republicans make cuts its from the poor and working class they cut…oh and bush hadnt started his evil occupation of iraq no one would have been killed in iraq. we must down size our huge massive very costly military… do you realize what we spend on our military is more than any other nation does for a total budget for all costs. we stop the war in iraq and save billions. think what bush could have done with 1 trillion he spent on war. that would have paid for every american to have health insurance for 10 years or it could have put teh unemployed to work fixing bridges and roads for 10 years. or jst went toward the national debt or repaired new orleans.

Right. And where was the Republican-led Congress – you know, the branch that actually doles out the money the military needs – while you imagine Clinton was gutting the military? Do you realize how ignorant of our basic government structure your rabid desire to “blame Clinton!” is making you sound? I bet you can blame Clinton for underfunding the military while in the same breath crediting the Republican Congress for the historic welfare reform. Ever hear of doublethink?
Oh, and he didn’t merely balance it – there was a significant surplus.

CW….did Bush understand you. Mr. and Mrs Obama has earned what they have, unlike some that was born with a silver spoon. Beside, I am from South Side Chicago, and those are big houses, tucked amongst low income housing, mixed income housing, regular restuarants, barbershops, the CTA, mom and pops stores. He doesn’t live in a secluded mansion in Chicago’s Hyde Park, big house in a nice neighborhood, surrounded by all class of people. This is the truth. I never could understand how in the beginning, his critics stated things like “elitist”, mansion, rugala”. Is the house big, yes. But in any Urban area, anything that you buy that is nice is expensive. So the cost maybe 1.5 mil, but the man that has just robbed our country will be moving to a 3.5 mil house in Texas. McCain has so many Mansions he’s stop counting. Is this your real issue or what! Was he supposed to be homeless ?

A comment on logistics– I have no problem with where the Obamas are staying until its time to move to Blair House. He can afford the hotel, so why not? What I wonder is the practical matter of whether this rush to move to Washington so the girls could start the semester with their classmates was necessarily the best idea. Having moved numerous times as a child, I know that new schools are a major adjustment no matter when you come in. The Obama girls are going to stand out even in such rarified company regardless of whether they are there on day one or not. Why not bring them in next week or the week after instead?
If I understand correctly, they left their old familiar home in Chicago before Christmas, stayed through the holidays in Hawaii– a familiar place even if the specific house they were staying in this time is unfamiliar. The impression I got from the news is that the Obamas would return from Hawaii this weekend, going straight to DC. So the girls will adjust to jet lag and a new hotel home and head to class all simultaneously. Then after ten days or so, they will move again, to Blair House, and a week later, into the White House. Sounds like lots of disruption.
The Obamas have rightly emphasized the importance of prioritizing the girls and their needs. So I think it would have been nice if they could have come up with a way to cut a little bit of the chaos. There is so much for the girls to absorb. So maybe they take a few days off at the beginning of the semester, recover from the time change, maybe even stay a week or so with grandma back in Chicago before the move-in to Blair House. Then, tanned, rested, and ready, they could join the students at Sidwell Friends ready to make new friends and settle into Washington life.
Or do other parents on the forum see it differently? I can see both sides– throw it all at them at once and let them adjust quickly and get it over with versus minimize the changes even if it means missing some days of school.

The Obamas staying for 2 weeks at the Hay Adams hotel has ZERO to do with proving he supports the Middle Class. I’m thoroughly Middle Class and I’ve stayed at the Hay Adams Hotel – it is like stepping back in time, filled with history and antiques, worth every dime because it’s two blocks from the White House and an easy walk to Washington DC museums. My family of 4 did not stay in a Presidential Suite, but we also shared one room – it was one of our most memorable family vacations ever. And for those of you bi*ching about the cost for Secret Service, just check out the price for other hotels in the neighborhood – there is always a higher cost for conveniently located hotels.

Molly – I disagree with your perspective that Obama was a media candidate and “they made sure he won.” McCain had the experience, but in the weigh-off, even Republican voters decided an intelligent, younger man (who everyone knew was a Chicago pol) was a better option for our country than 4 more years of Republican policies. It was the disastrous economy that pushed middle of the road voters to Obama, not the evil liberal media.

There were more candidates than McCain and Obama. You are assuming that I voted for McCain; there were others to vote for. Of course obama was a media candidate, did you hear anything against him other than just mentioning names and the wright trash? The media refused to let the truth be heard. I know you don’t agree, but Palin was trashed and the media turned their backs to the wrongdoings of obama. As far as, intelligent and younger man, I think you are letting your heart control your thinking and not your intelligence.

Might I remind you that the President Elect don’t have the time or convenience to travel back and forth from Chicago and to get his family settled and transition in to what will be the toughest job of his life. We have dubya to partly thank for that.
Might I also remind you our current president, in just a span of 8 years DOUBLED the national debt from 5 trillion to over 10 trillion.
Where is your interest??
One last thing? Since the current President has been ducking a lot of shoes lately, I feel that he is going to need extra protection for the rest of his life which is going to require more money. Are you concerned about our tax dollars in that regard?
Interesting

My comments.
First, most of us who voted for Obama are highly intellectual. In other words, we see past the forest and the trees. We arent blinded by a man’s past which in Obama’s case did not impact our lives. Secondly, the fact that OBama and Blago were politicans in Illionis suggest they are two peas in the same pot. Well, my friend “not”, If you and I were in chicago, and went to the same college, I guest that mean we both are intelligent……. “Not”. You see people with “brains” analytically know the difference between whats important and whats unimportant. Again, Obama’s past associations, or lack their of, did really feed us. Why would they? We all have family members, friends, even pastors, or coworkers who have said and done things that we cannot control. Let me stop….. you dont get want I am saying…….. you would follow a fat, pill popping idiot like Rush limbaugh…….. SMH!
The mere fact that Bush will no longer occupy the white house should have you dancing in the streets.
We all won. Get over it.

The folks that express the dislike for obama is feeding the Bush haters out of the same spoon they have been fed for so long. Posted by: Molly | January 2, 2009, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Sorry Molly, it wasn’t an “emotional” decision or the liberal media that drove voters to another Party. The Republicans dug their own grave after 8 years of failed “trickle down” economics and an expensive unpopular war. McCain also sold his sold to the devil by allowing his campaign to continue Rove style attacks – voters were weary of the divisiveness; it made his “experience” look distastefully like Bush. Not to mention the stupid choice of Sarah Palin, pandering to Evangelical zealots and far fringe right. Even my extremely conservative 86 year old neighbor voted for Obama, simply because she knew the risks of an elderly President and Palin scared the bejesus out of her.

Posted by: sparty601 | January 2, 2009, 10:53 pm 10:53 pm

intelligent vote? LOL-On November 4th, 2008 millions of Americans were shocked that a man of Barack Obama’s limited experience, extreme liberal positions and radical political alliances could be elected President of the United States. For many of these Americans, the explanation was rather simple… the news media, completely enamored with Obama, simply refused to do their job. 512 Obama Voters 11/13/08-11/15/08 MOE +/- 4.4 points
97.1% High School Graduate or higher, 55% College Graduates
Results to 12 simple Multiple Choice Questions
57.4% could NOT correctly say which party controls congress (50/50 shot just by guessing)
71.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)
82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)
88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)
56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).
And yet…..
Only 13.7% failed to identify Sarah Palin as the person on which their party spent $150,000 in clothes
Only 6.2% failed to identify Palin as the one with a pregnant teenage daughter
And 86.9 % thought that Palin said that she could see Russia from her “house,” even though that was Tina Fey who said that!!
Only 2.4% got at least 11 correct.
Only .5% got all of them correct. (And we “gave” one answer that was technically not Palin, but actually Tina Fey)

Posted by: RMBarley | January 3, 2009, 10:15 am 10:15 am

And for many many other Americans the answer was simple too: We weren’t going to put another bunch of corporate stooges back into the White House.

It would also be interesting to know why you feel it is such a big deal that NOW all of a sudden THIS President-Elect gives you cause to pry in to his expenditures which will span the time of three weeks.
I mention it now because now is when a new President is coming in.
Obama has done some unprecedented traveling both during his campaign (Europe) and post-election (Hawaii). Now he’s staying at the expensive Hay Adams. That’s his choice, but it is expensive to have an SS detail accompany him all those places.
And yes, Bush will get a stipend for an office as well as Secret Service when he retires. Perhaps you don’t remember, but Bill Clinton ran into some trouble when he first announced very expensive New York office space on the taxpayer’s dime. He altered his plans due to public pressure. It isn’t new to be concerned about what Presidents, President-elects, and former Presidents cost the taxpayers.
If GWB tries to push the limits, I’ll complain about that too. My guess is he’ll stay out of the limelight, and thus not cost us a lot, for the next few years.

Sorry, first paragraph in my comment below is a quote from Omentum.

Posted by: MayBee | January 3, 2009, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm

RMBarley says: “On November 4th, 2008 millions of Americans were shocked that a man of Barack Obama’s limited experience, extreme liberal positions and radical political alliances could be elected President of the United States.” And you say it’s solely the media’s fault this happened? Voters simply did not care if Biden copied a speech or if Obama used political tactics to get where he is today. In the real world, the US Census shows the number of people living under the poverty line rose by 5.7 million since Bush first took office in 2000, to 12.5% of the population. And while this was happening, 15,000 families in the top 0.01% of the population drew 5.5% of the nation’s total income, an even HIGHER share than during the “Gilded Age”. Meanwhile, manufacturing jobs declined over the past 8 years to become less than 10% of our workforce. For eight years our country’s assumption was Republican supply side economics would keep the economy chugging along with investment and more jobs. Even the least “intelligent” among us could tell that tax cuts for the rich gave largesse to the wealthy and were not creating new jobs. The economy is why the Republicans lost, not because of the evil liberal media.

I am amazed at the number of individual’s who continue to wish President Obama to be a failure in order to assuage their deviant right wing behavior. And of course, the leader of the pack, the convicted drug addict, Rush Limbaugh, returned from his Christmas respite from Obama bashing, to resume right where he left off. It should be considered treason to wish the failure of the government of the United States. Who cares who pays for President Obama’s temporary accomodations. I wish we could have paid him to be there starting on Nov. 4. I’m just amazed that not a single one of these individuals who are bashing President Obama on cost of his chosen accomodations didn’t utter a peep when Bush decided to take a farewell tour on Air Force One at a cost of over $60,000 plus per hour.

Posted by: devilkev | January 6, 2009, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

“WHO IS PAYING?” Well, when it comes to security, it’s taxpayer money. Too bad they were told by the Bush administration that the extremely secure Blair House was “booked”. Bloomberg reporter Margaret Carlson reported today that ex-Australian Prime Minister John Howard was invited to stay AFTER the fact to justify it being occupied. Seems like the outgoing administration could have been more flexible and accommodating to prevent wasting taxpayer money.
