Obama on the Economy: ‘The Situation Is Getting Worse’
ABC NEWS’ JAKE TAPPER, STEPHANIE SMITH AND JENNIFER DUCK REPORT:
After meeting with his economic team, President-elect Barack Obama warned, "…we are in a very difficult spot. The economy is bad. The situation is getting worse."
Flanked by economic advisers Obama said, "It’s clear that we have to act and we have to act now to address this crisis and break the momentum of the recession or the next few years could be dramatically worse."
When questioned about the transparency of an economic package that is expected to cost around $800 billion and be passed in just a few short weeks, Obama stood strong predicting "unprecedented transparency."
"We are confident that we can accomplish unprecedented transparency, even as we move this package forward," adding his new economic team hopes to put detailed information about economic projects online.
After scheduled meetings with both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill, Obama made it clear both democrats and republicans have to work to solve the economic crisis. "This is not a Republican problem or a Democratic problem at this stage. This is an American problem, and we’re all going to have to chip in and do the hard work that’s required and what the American people expect of us."
"The reason I’m here today is that we are going to present our latest ideas to Congress," Obama said between meetings at the Capitol. "We expect them to begin this week on this process. And, you know, I expect to sign a bill to create 3 million jobs for the American people shortly after I get inaugurated."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t commit to an exact date for the bill saying, "I won’t make an announcement of how soon but we all know the tasks at hand."
Republicans were optimistic about the tax cuts but concerned about size of the package.
"I think we’re glad that the president elect believes that tax cuts are in fact simulative and will in fact get our economy moving," House Republican Leader John Boehner said after the meeting. "I’m a little concerned myself about the overall size of the package. It’s not going to paid for by the current generation. It’s going to be left to our children and grandchildren."
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hasn’t seen the package but said the president-elect "has indicated that there’s at least 20 economists that he’s talked with, and all but one of those believe it should be from $800 billion to $1.2 trillion or $1.3 trillion."
In response to Reid’s comments, Obama officials told ABC News they don’t anticipate a number in the trillions but say $800 billion wouldn’t be too far off.
When a reporter questioned the President-elect’s politics behind his tax cut plan, he played defense. "The notion that me wanting to include relief for working families in this plan is somehow a political ploy, when this is — was the centerpiece of my economic plan, for the last two years, doesn’t make too much sense," he responded.
The President-elect urged Congress to put politics aside. "I know that, regardless of our positions and our parties, everybody has the interests of their constituents at heart. Everybody is motivated by doing what’s best for their country," he said. "And we may have some disagreements, but I think it’s going to be possible for us to work out those disagreements in the atmosphere of civility and comity. And that’s going to be my goal."
"I’m confident we can do this, and we have to do this," Reid said calling the meeting with the incoming president "terrific."

I read somewhere that part of this stimulus comes in the form of money for transportation projects to local communities and states. The projects are supposed to purchase products locally and hire locally thus putting money into the local economies. I also read that Obama wants these projects to go immediately so that money starts flowing. Sounds good but any large transportation project will require an EIS. EIS typically take around 6 months if you are lucky. How is Obama going to reconcile this stimulus package with his enviro buddies?

There’s been a 42% debt increase to China in the last year. I mean it’s worth noting under the circumstances. So is Bush inheriting a surplus of around 500 billion from Clinton to be leaving eight years later with a debt estimated at 10.7 trillion. I won’t mention other legacies.

I fear that the politicians are too dense to see what the real problem is here, and are pushing an inflationary stimulus package, hoping that it just makes the underlying problems go away. The real problem is the lack of industry, manufacturing and technology in this country. We exported all of them to Asia etc and now we don’t produce anything except arms. We’ve become the former Soviet Union.

ABC please cover what Pelosi just did to the fairness bill for the House. No debate, Republicans can not add amendments, basicly the Democrats can put up any bill and no opposition will be allowed. Why not just banish the Republicans into the Potomac River. I guess this is the change Obama talked about one party rule with him as dictator. As a life long Democrat I’m applaud at this action by Pelosi but I doubt the media will say anything. Highlight today the Obama kids first day in school the main focus for the media.

To bring manufacturing jobs back to America, all it takes is a little law that we do NOT allow any imports from companies or from countries which abuse or allow the abuse of workers or land. The United Nations put together a long list of things necessary to have an “even playing field”, and not stealing from workers is just one of the items on the list.
If anyone starts a petition to nudge Congress into immediate action on implementing a humane and honorable even playing field in our nation’s laws, I wish to sign it.

Government make-work does nothing fopr the economy and when the work is done, ends at the same place, the unemployment line. Which now has extended benefits, as long as the printing presses hold out.
Why work when the money is free.

I am just waiting to see if Obama and Congress’s words, deeds, and actions match. I still think a small $500 or $1000 for families is a joke. That would not even pay for food and gas or a mortgage payment, never mind health care or other life living needs. That kind of check would probably not even pay for a one day stay for Obama at that fancy hotel. But we are suppose to be able to ??? with it. What a joke and an insult to most working families. Change? We will see. Words are just that without deeds and actions to match.

Obama’s first lesson- Pelosi runs the show. She has shot down rules introduced in 1994 by the Republicans that limit chairman’s terms of committees, and will not allow the minority party to introduce bills. It is the start of her dictatorship. She’ll be the real president. She and Reid protects Frank, Dodd, and Rangel, all up on ethics charges and still chairman of their committee. The Dems held Congress for the last 2 years with Frank and Dodd in charge of banking committees and they did nothing to stop it. Maybe they wanted the subprime mess to happen on Bush’s watch to win the election.I wouldn’t put it past them.

So the House will be acting totally un-Democratic by not giving those who supported Republicans and Independents a voice in government. And the Dems always yell about disenfranchising voters and now they will do it to 46% of the voters. And back in 94 the Republicans introduced changes that limited terms of chairman of committees and allowed for more minority party voice for a more bi-partisan Congress. Pelosi is undoing all of that.COngress will not be representing the people.

These people are really starting to scare me. They offer absolutely nothing in the way of solutions. They cannot even get past their own denial of whether a problem even exists.
Yes Virginia the U.S has been loosing jobs lots of them, and a man named George Bush has played a large role.
But there are people that are not able to accept this fact because it doesn’t fit their political affiliation. They only want to remember Mr. Bush as being someone who was a great liberator, and not someone who practically turned his back on the every day working people. Unfortunately these very same people accuse, insult and slander anyone who even tries to do anything to help with the apparent lack of ‘jobs’ problem.
It is almost a disease? People with a partisan viewpoint that runs contrary of what is best for the working people in our country. Maybe it is because they have not suffered as others have?
What has caused this? What can cure it?
I do know the last thing we need is another entertainer type to join the “aint we mean club”. There’s most definitely enough of those already. It is very sad. Mr. Bush said he would unite our country, but instead he has left us very divided.

This is for CW who believes only people who don’t pay taxes will benefit.
First and foremost, everyone pays taxes. Whether they punch a time clock or not. Everytime you go to the grocery store, buy gas, purchase a pack of gum you’re paying taxes. I really don’t know where or how that ridiculous statement started and why it’s still so widely used.
And yes, I’m a taxpayer. I pay property taxes, federal taxes, social security taxes, medicate taxes, food taxes, gas taxes and a host of other taxes.
And it will take more than a month in office for Obama and his team to undue the damage this present adminstration had created for the past eight years.

” I really don’t know where or how that ridiculous statement started and why it’s still so widely used. ”
CW is pretty much correct. The Federal government cutting taxes means they are reducing your federal tax burden.
property taxes- local government
social security taxes- Federal gov but supposedly a seperate annuity
medicate taxes- medicare supposedly pays for over 65 health cost.
food taxes- local
gas taxes- state
You cant really count SSN and Medicare since you are supposedly are “paying into” them (shhh).
Since the other things you listed arent federal taxes, there is no way a federal tax cut effects them.
Over 50% of income earners today pay no Federal income tax. How can you cut taxes on them? You cant. The Obama proposal is to rebate them money they never paid in the first place. I guess I could see the point of a Earned Income credit since it promotes activity that saves the government money, but things have gotten out of control. What are we supposed to be promoting with this new stimulus? Buying flat screens from Korea and iPhones from China.

No one force them to load up the credit cards, buy the cars on short terms, or buy a house when they didn’t have a down payment. throwing more money at them won’t help. but i bet the illegal workers in the country will find a way of getting a check

Obama is talking 600,000 more federal jobs. The agriculture dept has a $40billion budget and 100,000 people. Seems like a lot to me but I don”t work for them. I”m sure there is plenty of waste there. Now an additional 600,000 workers that you know will be unionized and will never be laid off. Another entitlement we will be paying for for many years. And how far will $500 go when there talking about $175 per cow for methane tax and raising gas prices 10cents per gallon. The states will be raising taxes on everything so in the end the $500 will be used to pay the increased taxes planned by the Dems. Never cut a budget when you can add more entitlements to it. Granted they can”t cut spending now until the economy is back but they”ll never look at waste in govt unless a group of fiscal conservatives (not those of the Bush years) get control of the govt.

Hey Bertie- Are you watching too much Hannity and Colmes?
Contrary to those guys and your claims, the unemployment has increased under Bush statistically speaking. The unemployment rate since 2001 of 5.2% has been lower than the average rate for the 90′s a decade, but higher than the last 4 years of the Clinton administration which averaged in the 4% range. This was after Clinton inherited a 7.5% unemployment from #41, but which declined each year to 4.2% in 1999. But then the Bush administration has been pretty good at manipulating information and data for its own ends.

Stapleford he projects the jobless rate to peak at 8.7 percent by the end of the year, up from 6.7 percent currently, while some experts predict the rate could rise to 9 percent or more.

Bush squandered America’s money away. He will be remembered as the Ponzi President.
Now Obama wants to infuse the economy from the bottom up– the only way liquidity hits the economy and brain dead fiscal conservatives are having a problem with his tax cut?
As for Congress, didn’t they just vote for a salary increase for themselves?
And the working poor cannot receive a long overdue tax break while the wealthy under Bush will continue to have their tax breaks??
It is a miracle America has remained an economic superpower for so long with limited foresight.
God help Obama get his plan approved by jealous outdated minds that sit on Capitol Hill. Throw the bums out!

David Williams ,
*******NEWS FLASH*******
The “Gavel” has been under Democratic control for the past two years!!!!
Only a total idiot who does not understand that CONGRESS controls the money runs around blaming just the Republicans. Pelosi/Reid along with their buddies Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Charlie Rangel…etc have taken a bad sistuation and created a disaster out of it.
Plenty of blame on both sides. Liberals need get off this idea that Bush created this mess all on his own. Realize that Obama has one of the main proponents of the policies that led to this in his proposed gruop of advisors.
Larry Summers was the Sec. of the Treasury at the end of the Clinton Adminstration and supported the deregulation of the derivatives market.
The real truth is that Democrats consistently block efforts by republicans since 2000 to put greater regulation on Freddie & Fannie. Barney Frank was one of the biggest opponents to those efforts.
Now, we all are depending on those who created this mess and blocked efforts to avoid it to actually fix it. As with most problems in life, you cannot create a viable solution to a problem if you can’t describe how the problem came about.
Posted by: Mike_C | January 6, 2009, 9:15 am 9:15 am
There is really no quick fix to this mess. Here’s an idea that I think could be quicker than any so far. I’ve submitted this to the transition team but probably got ignored.
The government should ask every taxpayer to send them their mortgage, credit card, car loan statements etc.
They would then pay those loans up to $100,000. per taxpayer. This could get people shopping and buying again and the government would know where the money went. If anyone has less debt than the 100K they would recieve a check for the balance.
As of now I don’t know many who are house, or auto shopping. Seems that this would stimulate the economy quicker and probably not cost more than the $700 billion given to Wall Street and the banks, who are not going to explain what they did with it.
I’ve heard that Congress didn’t get a vote on that package. Imagine Bush doing that…….

“Seems that this would stimulate the economy quicker and probably not cost more than the $700 billion given to Wall Street and the banks”
There are about 146M taxpayers. At $100K each, that would be about $15T.
The government doesnt have $15T. Printing that much money would cause inflation. Banks would paid back with money that was worthless than that which they lent so their stocks would crash. Consumer prices would rise as inflated paper entered the economy all in the same quarter.
It sort of seems like the whole approach being adopted is like advocating stimulants for someone who has been up for three days. At some point you have to be allowed to rest naturally or the crash is worse.
