Obama Still Clinging to his Blackberry
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report: President-elect Barack Obama is still "clinging" to his blackberry… but not too much.
Upon arriving at Reagan National airport in Washington D.C. to fly to Cleveland, Obama got out of his black limo and dropped his blackberry and his case on the tarmac.
Yes — his infamous blackberry — the one that will be taken away from him in just four short days and the one he just recently said he is "clinging" to for every last moment.
A secret service agent promptly picked up the president-elect’s beloved device and handed it back to him.
Obama has led a much-publicized campaign to keep his blackberry once he’s inaugurated. For security and legal reasons — and mainly for not wanting to leave a paper trail — Obama may not win that fight.
But for the next four days, it’s all his to use — and abuse.
Incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs joked that Obama’s clumsiness this morning might have solved the fight.
"That may have solved his blackberry dilemma, right," Gibbs joked to press, promising to check the status of the blackberry. "Forget the lawyers."
– Sunlen Miller and Yunji de Nies
UPDATE: ABC News’ Ann Compton reports that top confidantes David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett tell ABC News that Obama will keep his blackberry to keep up personal contacts "outside the bubble" of the White House. The two advisors confirm the president-elect wants to continue messaging political allies and personal friends such as his high school friends from Hawaii. "He’s pretty determined," Axelrod says.

Let him keep his blackberry. However, everything should be recorded and placed into the offical records of his administration. There is a reason the White House and members of Congress keep logs of all correspondences. Anybody remember Watergate?

He can’t keep this one because cell phone calls and e-mail can be intercepted. They will give him a new one that is able to keep that from happening and able to transmit top secret info safely.

Apparently Republicans forgot as Bush administration used private email accounts.
A technique picked up by Caribou Barbie.

“So, what exactly are these legal problems with carrying a blackberry? I keep hearing people say that, but what is it? ”
RIM’s NOC is in Canada and is not secure.
Its a security issue to have the President’s messages intercepted, monitored and possibly spoofed.

As president, most communication is to be recorded. Wireless devices like the Blackberry prevent that.
The frustrating part to me is that he is not just complying to the rules (even as outdated and/or ridiculous as they may be). I’m sure his intentions are innocent, but since this opens the door for abuses, he just shouldn’t go there. I hope he complies.

If you recall, Uncle George B, signed into
law a bill that required the telecommunication
industry to monitor most of the overseas
transmissions (meaning record) for so called
“national security” reasons. This left the window
wide open to include diplomatic and governmental
monitoring and more. Before this was enacted, the
telecommunication industry would arbitrarily
monitor its systems for quality purposes only,
which they held the recordings for a couple
months and then destroyed them. With this law
they have to keep it for years!
With this law even Rosemary Woods (Nixon’s
secretary) would’ve had her legs tied to the
chair, so she couldn’t use the foot switch to erase
the 18 minutes.

This guy is a joke!!! He thinks he can do anything. He wants to be out from under the radar of the press and do things as he pleases. Remember Clinton, they thought they could do this also, but it doesn’t work….when you are the president, you belong to the people. After all, some of the people elected him. He wanted the job; adhere to the rules of Lincoln…he so wants to be like him. Next he will be wearing a top-hat and growing a beard.
Posted by: Mildred | January 16, 2009, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm
The reason they don’t want him using it is because all of the emails and text messages he would send from it would be recorded and put out for public view after his presidency. That is why none of the presidents have used email since its existence.

As a “crack-berry” user myself I can empathize with his desire to hang on to his lifeline. HOWEVER, as someone who knows all to well the problems with keeping one totally secure (it can’t be done) I say, “Get rid of it! You can always start using one again when your address changes back to Illinois.”
Absolutely NO communication from the POTUS should ever have the possibility of landing in the wrong hands. Worst case scenario: A supposedly harmless greeting to a friend might be turned into a way for a determined assassin to find out a place where Obama might be more lightly guarded, and thus a better target. If I can think of ways to do this, it is certain that someone else can as well.
So, do us all a favor Mr. Obama: Make the Changes you talked about during the campaign, starting with that Blackberry. You know you should.

Ice Cream & The Election
Excellent analogy!
From a teacher in the Nashville area.
Who worries about “the cow” when it is all about the “Ice Cream?
The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year.
The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest.
I decided we would have an election for a class president.
We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.
We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.
We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections.
Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia’s mother.
The day arrived when they were to make their speeches Jamie went first.
He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best.
Everyone applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise.
She said, “If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.” She sat down.
The class went wild. “Yes! Yes! We want ice cream.” She surely could say more. She did not have to.
A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure.
Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn’t know.
The class really didn’t care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.
Jamie was forgotten.
Olivia won by a landslide.
Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and fifty-two percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream.
The other forty-eight percent of us know we’re going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.

The Blackberry lets him communicate outside the norm. If he puts anything on paper or talks on a phone where he just might ‘step in it’ he might be like his friend Blago.

Anyone carrying a cell phone or Blackberry can be tracked easily. Remember the movie “Independence Day”. An assasin with an RPG and a tracker could simply triangulate which room where the Blackberry is and blast the room. End of the Blackberry and everyone next to it. The Blackberry has to go.
Posted by: John Aiken | January 16, 2009, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm
Blackberry’s send and receive email along with phone calls that can be monitored by others. They cannot take the risk of national security leaks. Simple security rule. His problem is he believes anything he does is justified, just puts his Obama spin on it and all is right with the world. Time for him (and half of America) to wake up to reality, that will be their CHANGE.

-for all of you misguided liberals.
Enough of katrina, just where was your democrat mayor and governor. — The Posse Comitatus Act passed by Congress in 1878 prevents a president from sending federal troops to a state without the governor’s consent.
The Democrat governor of Louisiana, refused to cooperate with President Bush when the president asked for her consent to begin a mandatory evacuation four days before the storm.
The Democrats in the Louisiana homeland security office also refused to let the Red Cross bring truckloads of food, water and supplies to the Superdome.
Since 1980, Louisiana emergency personnel knew that the levees in New Orleans would not withstand a category 3 or 4 hurricane. Yet, the Democrats in Congress filibustered President Bush’s energy bill which was introduced in 2001 and contained $540 million for repairing the levees in New Orleans.”
“To their eternal shame, Democrats used the tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina for their own partisan political gain.
While criticizing President Bush, Democrats turned a blind eye to the failures of the Democrats running the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.
The black Democrat officials in New Orleans did not execute the emergency evacuation plan and allowed over 1,000 school buses and city transit buses to stay in parking lots and become ruined by the flood.”

If keeping in touch with his friends is more important than protecting his life, what can you say? to monitor the blacberry – the secret service will need acess to the Blackberry servers. that will be more accounts and , i am sure, a large fee paid to teh company for the unlimited acess to the server network.
To be sure the signals are not intercepted, threre will need to be a LARGE team of specilists to visit and ‘Control” all the networks, and avoid slipping of data.

Doesn’t matter what he is sending or not sending—-email, text or voice. The point is, unless the unit is completely powered off, the unit’s exact location can be determined using multiple cell towers. To receive, the cell phone must be in communication with a nearby cell tower so it sends keepalives every so often to do so—even when not texting, emailing or on a call. That closet cell tower then updates other cell towers so that future communications (wherever they may come from) ultimately get to the destination—the cell phone.

In order of importance of who Obama is:
1) A human-being
2) A husband and a father
3) President of the United States of America.
We (the public) don’t own him. If we do… then we are bascially no better than the slave owners. Obama is basically an elected federal employee. If we own Obama then do we own other millions of federal employees?
His decision to carry phone is his decision. Let him make it accordingly. With or without the phone, he will be swarmed with secret service agents everywhere! If I am Obama– I would use it to communicate with my wife, kids.. pretty much as that. A common sense would tell me mot to discuss national security or any classified information via blackberry. Only an idiot would do that.

Good to know that our new president is already flouting the law. For those who are still asking “Why can’t he keep his crackberry?” it’s because ALL presidential correspondance must be made available to the US Archives. In all presidential correspondance, there MUST be a paper trail. We can’t have anyone questioning anything he said or did and with a paper trail or recordings, his words can be shown to anyone questioning anything. The law dictates he can’t have a crackberry and that should be the end of it. But is it? Nope, much like the law that states one must be a naturalized citizen to be president, BO doesn’t feel the law applies to him unless it suits him.

Steve, how naive are you? OF COURSE we own the man now that he’s president. He is the leader of the free world and it’s our tax dollars that not only pay his salary but also that will be used to bail out all these banks and companies. Yes, he is a human being, but he is now a human being who is POTUS. His life and his family now come second to the rest of the world for the next four years (or for however long it takes the American people to realize they’ve been duped and impeach him.) As far as the auto industry bailout, I’d have put a stipulation on the “loans” that the only way they got the money was if they brought all the outsourced jobs back to this country. When they outsourced to lower pay countries, did they lower their prices? Nope, not one thin red cent. If the American taxpayers money is good enough to bail them out, the American taxpayers should be good enough to work for them.

Steve, Government of the people, by the people, for the people. The Presidents FIRST duty is to the people of the United States. And yes that goes for the rest of the politcal leaders as well. It is our duty to keep them doing their jobs, that is why we have recalls and impeachments. But, unfortunaltely, everone is blinded by the Party machines and don’t see right or wrong just democrat and Republican and feel that “Thier” party can do no wrong.

How would you like to have him visiting someplace you are or your children are at with the GPS in his pocket and a terrorist put a rocket right through the building. or hack into the system and get very important peoples email addresses to send fraudelent messages from the POTUS> I am suprised he is still carrying it. PS for anyone worrying about him not being able to call his wife and kids from it, POTUS WIFE and CHILDREN will not be keeping theirs either. THEY ALL GET SPECIAL PHONES.

Ok seriously people.
You cannot ‘triangulate’ a GPS signal emitted from a particular Blackberry – its the same signal used by millions of Blackberrys and 10′s of millions mode Garmins and other devices. The GPS is NOT the method by which emails are sent. If Obama sends an email from his blackberry, the worst thing that might happen is him making a typo.

Read a book, No they can not track the GPS device on board, But they can triagulate the location of the cell phone signal. Gee I think even the FCC can do that. But what the hell does he need that for anyway? To look cool?

Is this newsworthy journalism? I am incredibly embarrassed that I even read this article. It is terrible that ABC presents this as a journalistic piece. I hope that someday news organizations will spend time developing stories that people need to hear instead of stories that will make them money.

I’ve never had a blackberry and have no desire or use for it in my life. Believe it or not, the world would survive very well without it. Plus, the “First Crackberry” is just too tempting a target for someone out there not to try messing with, just for the challenge of it. Obama should get a clue and unplug for 4 years.

I say.. let him keep it. He’s the one who is going to be sorry when something he has on there is used against him. And to those who keep harping about him not being trusted with a phone…it’s not the phone, it’s the E-Mail & texting that is an issue. That all can become public. But he is so arrogant that he thinks NOTHING he says can be used against him. No matter how careful he is, there will be something that at the very least will be misconstrued.

Just think of his Blackberry as a 24 hour a day Teleprompter.

Beyond viruses, any task related emails he sends on it become public records and must be saved. Also, I suspect someone could figure out how to track it. BTW, weren’t some of you worried about Sarah Palin using her own PC for government work, LOL.

Reality check
Barack Obama now has one of the world’s largest responsibilities. The President of the United States.
Now for someone with such power and responsibility to the world, the United States, family and friends by using a commercially massed produced telephone is setting one’s self up for trouble.
I have a question.
Would you I told you on
September 10th 2001 that 2 commercial jets would fly into both of the World Trade Center’s and brings them down
Also one other plane would crash into the pentagon and another plane would attempt to crash into the White House
Would you believe me if I had told you after the terrorist attack:
We would go to war with Iraq bombing their infrastructure and cities killing innocent men, women and children in the process.
And Many of OUR son’s and daughters will never see their families and friends
And invade Afghanistan where more of our US soldiers will never live in the country they died for.
And the Billions of tax payers money to sponsor this.
I bet you wouldn’t believe me and thought I was a lunatic
It is this SIMPLE, The secret service gets paid to protect the president. That is what they focus on, so when they say “ditch the blackberry “I would dump the blackberry
The Secret Service knows what they are talking about, because that’s what they do best.
Here is an example of a hacker:
1. c0mrade — Miami
In 2000, a 16-year-old from Miami known on the Internet as “c0mrade” became the first juvenile to go to jail on federal computer-crime charges for hacking into NASA. The boy admitted to attacking a military computer network used by the DTRA (Defense Threat Reduction Agency) from Aug. 23, 1999 to Oct. 27, 1999. The youth installed a backdoor access on a server that intercepted more than 3,300 electronic messages to and from DTRA staff. The backdoor also accessed at least 19 usernames and passwords of DTRA employees, including at least 10 usernames and passwords on military computers. The unnamed juvenile was sentenced to six months in a detention facility.
Imagine Software and communications engineers in a country like Russia with large amount of money to hack into a blackberry
Maybe we think they are not smart enough.

I don’t think the issue is really with intercepting his personal communications. The problem is this phone can be used to locate his position whenever it’s turned on and recieving a signal. Anyone see a security issue there, especially if you’d like to see your beloved Obama survive the next four years? You think the pres has some secret bunker locations that this device may potentially expose as well?

Be Afraid… Be Very Afraid
Any IT professional know that a blackberry is not secure
I have been an IT professional for 20 years and I have many stories from back when 14.400 modems 1st came out
Warez sites list all sorts of goodies… lots of credit card numbers, company server sites where I can store large files, as back then my PC only had 20 – 40 megs and a 5 ¼ floppy drive
I used to work for a Global leader outsourcing company in the IT industry and here is some stories,. It is not always the technology side but the human emotional side that gets you into stuff
Here are some examples where I use to work
- One very smart person (Smartguy) didn’t like this one particular co-worker. So as she would be working along on her computer then Smartguy would blue screen her computer that ticked her off thinking that her computer was faulty. He would show some people this and thought it was funny hearing her curse at the computer. Every time he blue screened her.
Smartguy went to far when he was able to hack into and read the presidents email.
He then showed up for work one morning and security did not allow him into his office. He was then met with his manager and escorted and banned from ever entering the building
- Another incident was a tape operator was a single guy wanting to date some co-workers, so he would access the motor vehicles to gather personal information about them.
- On a boring night shift the security guard showed me the president’s office and kitchen. He went into his fridge and we had leftover pheasant. ( It was one of the biggest oil companies)
- Another time is when we were short staffed and the company decided to load some work off the other office on the other side of the country.
The story goes like this. One of our clients was a big government financial institute. We had to sign an endless amount of security checks, finger prints, and criminal record checks. The Government institute was so locked down that anyone with no security clearance could only access of their servers if I was watching or monitoring them. I could not take my eye off any support person working on a server. However the workload was passed on to a person who had no security clearance. He could not access the government servers at night as we were 7X24.
So I gave him my password… Yes! I lent…gave him my password. He used all our passwords for over a month. I did change my password but he had hacked into the government sites figuring out my changed password (as I just change the last number of my password as it changers every 2 weeks and it is easy to keep track of) and worked all night using my password. I found out about this and brought it to management’s attention. Wow if the Government institute found out we would loose the contract and a lot of people would loose there jobs. I still have kept the email to him admitting to hacking my password.
In conclusion
These are only a few of my IT security stories and if you tell me a blackberry is secured I grin and say to myself you obviously this person dose not work in the IT support industry
