Obama Teams Defends Panetta CIA Pick

Obama officials are defending the president-elect’s pick of Leon Panetta to lead the CIA.

They say that in his role as former President Bill Clinton’s chief of staff and a former director of the Office of Management and Budget, Panetta gained significant intelligence experience.

Panetta also served on the Iraq Study Group.

But there are some unhappy Democratic senators tonight who say they weren’t consulted on the pick.

I spoke with the incoming chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Sen. Dianne Feinstein who told me she was "staggered" that she wasn’t called.

She’s not the only one.

Feinstein has a history of saying that this job should be reserved for intelligence professionals.

She isn’t going so far as to say that she’ll vote against Panetta’s appointment, but it’s clear the Obama team has some work to do here.

Obama is the greatest president ever. He does NEED to consult with anyone.

He’s the president, do as your told. Senate intelligence committe? all they can ask is how much do you need, by are not informed on what’s being done. he don’t need your advice

Panette is totally unqualified to be CIA director. This appointment shows that Obama will give up quality to pacify his lunatic left wing fringe constituents.

The only thing Panetta knows about the CIA is how to get there in a car. A sorry pick by the ‘chosen one’.

CIA needs a strong, experienced hand at the helm (no pun intended), not another political hack.

It looks like Obama is bringing back the RETIRED Clinton administration. Leon Panetta is 70.

It is amazing that there are people saying Obama is the greatest president ever when he isn’t even President yet. If you feel that way now it just shows you are drinking the Obama Kool-aid and it doesn’t matter what he does because you will just say he is great, not matter what. It shows a lack of objectivity and intelligence on your part.

Yes, everyone is correct Obama can do what he wants, he doens’t have to consider anyone else. He will be ‘concerned’ that they don’t understand.

I don’t think Panetta is without intelligence experience. According to the Wikepedia, he served as a chief of operations and intelligence planning at Ford Ord while he was in the army. I think a background in civil rights lends itself well to the CIA, especially in cleaning things up. It’s a definite outside the box choice, and also a choice which is outside of Bush’s counterterrorism programs.

Bad (read OLD) idea? Where IS the “change” here? Biden, Panetta, all of the Clinton retreads… 20th cetury answers to 21st century problems… Albeit after looking at the age of some of these folks, make that 19th century answers to 20th century problems! Good Lord! Obama is wet behind the ears, and his advisers are WAAY beyond their years! Yikes!

Check out Panetta’s experience on George’s column above. He’s qualified. One would be a little hard pressed to find an experienced “intelligence” person not tainted by torture acquiescence. Yes, those speaking out against this nomination are crying and sucking their thumb. Their egos were bruised because their choice wasn’t selected. WAAAAAA

Outdated – and totally unqualified for the job at hand – another political IOU being cashed in, and the ones that suffer will be our troops and field officers.

Posted by: scotsmab | January 5, 2009, 7:56 pm 7:56 pm

As much as I think that Panetta is a REALLY BAD choice for CIA Director, it IS Obama’s choice. And he does NOT need to discuss it with Senators first. Although they need to confirm the choice, that is their ONLY role – not to tell Obama who he is allowed to pick. I think that one of the reasons so many Senators backed Obama is because they thought they could control him… I guess he’s showing them (unfortunately, at our expense).

I’m a yellow dog Democrat and a Washington political junkie, and I don’t recall a single appointment or nomination that was ever run by Congressional leaders for their approval prior to being announced, early courtesy notifications notwithstanding. Democratic leaders seem to idiotically be under some illusion that Obama’s Presidency is going to be one that is shared by all members of the Party. It will not be, nor should it be, nor has any prior presidencies been.

Diane Feinstein, the incoming Chairperson of the Senate Intelligence Committee, someone I have met and respect, says she is astounded at this selection. I’m flaberghasted.
I know Leon Panetta is a good guy and hasn’t been connected with any outrageous scandals (his friendship and political association with Bill Clinton notwithstanding) but he has absolutely no experience in leadership in the intelligence community. Appointing him as the chief of the largest and most sophisticated intelligence aparatus in the world is eliciting huge gaffaws in the inner offices of the British Secret Service, KGB, Massoud, and other renowned intelligance agencies.
I also know CIA agents. If they don’t trust you, if you try to use the CIA for political shenanegans, or they just don’t like the cut of your sails, they will react in the most unusual ways, none of them good ways, just like spoiled children – very deadly spoiled children.
Panetta does not fit and the Agency will go all out to run him off the reservation. I can hear the wheels at Langley turning now. I can hear Oliver Stone scribbling away on his new script “How the CIA Agent on the Grassy Knoll …”. Talk about a king-sized goof! Alfred E. Newman (What me worry?) of Mad Magazine would have been a better choice.
Swami Obami, the Ebony Oracle just doesn’t seem to be able to shake those Chicago political genes.

The issue here is the cover-up of the shoot-down of TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996. Either Panetta was involved in the coverup, or he was one of those against it. Either way, the news of this coverup will come out sometime very soon. I believe the ‘anger’ and ‘confusion’ you see right now from those in DC surrounds this very sensitive issue. I hope the doors blow wide open on this topic immediately so that everyone will know the truth.

The Senate needs to just say NO to this pick. CIA head is a job that demands throuough knowledge of the agency. Obama shows the “Illinois politics” in this pick. The country deserves better and deserves a capable CIA lead.

Posted by: Robert Perkins | January 5, 2009, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

1st, if you are unable to write or annunciate clearly, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote or speak on the issues.
2nd, if PEBO choses to tick off too many of his party, he won’t get anyone to be in the cabinet, as they must all be approved by the Senate. So he DOES need to consult with them, IF he wants his pick to get voted into office…or is that too complicated an explanation for your backwoods, Race to G.E.D-educated mind to grasp? Mouth-breather…sheesh

Posted by: RaginCajun | January 5, 2009, 10:16 pm 10:16 pm

Personally I think the pick is brilliant. The last four decades of CIA corruption is about to be weeded out by the first TRUE outsider to take the head post.

Posted by: Eric | January 5, 2009, 10:23 pm 10:23 pm

Robert Perkins — Do you work for the CIA or something? You have no idea what the top CIA job ‘demands’. I know what the American people demand — and that is to weed out all government corruption hiding behind the protective wall of ‘necessary’ secrecy. The CIA has abused much of its power over the last 40 years. I welcome an outsider like Panetta to clean the place up.

No one else is qualified??
What about the Sr officers at NSA, DIA, NIS? Are ALL of these people incapable of moving up to a more senior position, simply due to tenure? Are they all incompetent, and therefore should be overlooked? Why not just tell them “Thanks for your years of service and hard work, but we think your worthless, and not worth considering…”
Need a good manager? Why not put Blago in there, he seems to be doing pretty good a scamming uh, er, running the state of Ill.!

Posted by: DW | January 5, 2009, 10:29 pm 10:29 pm

The more resistance I see from the Washington elite (Rockefeller, Feinstein, etc), the more I KNOW this pick is perfect. The Washington elite do NOT want an outsider leafing through their secret and untoward histories. This is exactly what an outsider like Panetta will do, and he’ll probably uncover a great deal of illegal activity by the CIA. I am personally looking forward to the uncovering of the CIA’s role in the cover-up of the shoot-down of TWA Flight 800.
Panetta was Clinton’s chief of staff when the shoot down occurred, but he resigned shortly thereafter. He must have been one of the few people against the cover-up. I glean this because there is so much resistance to his pick in Washington. Obama knows what’s up and he’s working for the people to hold the liars accountable.

It continues to amaze me how people who THINK they know what goes on behind closed intelligence doors from hollywood, rumor and innuendo are so beholden to the idea that almost everything the intel community does is illegal.
Do you think one administration is gonna change it, IF it were true? Do you really think that if there are illegal activities that benefit the U.S. interests that Pannetta will find out? If they can keep a secret from you and me for so long, what makes you think they CAN’T keep it from Pannetta??? Are you THAT GULLIBLE???

the intelligence community is fetid. its moral corruption and professional dopiness is matched only by the Bush Dept of Justice. NO ONE WHO HAS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CIA SHOULD BE PROPOSED FOR THIS OR ANY SENSITIVE POSITION in govt.
Feinstein has it exactly backwards.

This is Conspiracy Theory 101…there is NO HARD EVIDENCE to support these claims. Do you realize how many “eyewitness accounts” of events turn out to be incorrect, as an example in a trial? People “read into what they see” to make it make sense.
Again, if there are ‘other’ activities, do you not believe the current staff responsible will hide those to ensure the programs continue???

Panetta is a great choice!
Panetta is by far better than the one bush pick for his UNPROVOKED Iraq bush war, which killed and wounded tens of thousands of Americans!
Americans aren’t served by un-intelligent agents who manufacture intelligence that cause an INCOMPETENT and wild President to send thousands of Americans to early graves in Iraq!

Posted by: Patriot | January 5, 2009, 11:00 pm 11:00 pm

Feinstein should remind herself that “intelligence professionals,” insiders in that insular world utterly failed vis a vis intelligence about Iraq and the agency might have been better off with more internal integrity and sense of its place in the wider world of government. Obama knows what he is doing.

Posted by: Reminder | January 5, 2009, 11:00 pm 11:00 pm

Panetta is quite qualified to lead the CIA despite the fact that he is not an insider, and perhaps because of that. He has stated his crystal clear opposition to torture! THAT’S why Obama picked him. America needs leaders with principle for a change. Feinstein has known about US torture for years and has not fought very strongly against it. She is useless and her opinion is irrelevant. Obama was smart enough to not even bother with the input of this washed up old crone.

Katmando — There are over 600 eyewitness accounts of a missile striking TWA 800. 33 of those accounts are of people who saw the missile being launched from the sea.
http://flight800.org/witness-review.htm
The CIA produced a video which showed the plane violating the laws of physics by flying unobstructed after the nose was blown off.

I see the “the CIA blew up the Pentagon” crowd is out in force tonight. Did you ever think that appointment of a political hack from the Clinton administration, which saw indiscriminate use of FBI files against linton’s enemies and Sandy Berger sneaking confidential intel docs out of the National Archives in his sock, might be something of a threat to national security and personal privacy?

Posted by: vancav | January 5, 2009, 11:17 pm 11:17 pm

vancav said, “…and Sandy Berger sneaking confidential intel docs out of the National Archives in his sock, might be something of a threat to national security and personal privacy”
Exactly! Berger was stealing documents that exposed the government’s role in hiding the fact that TWA 800 was shot down by a missile. The missile shoot down was not covered up very well at all (because cover ups are very hard to do). But the involvement of the CIA producing a video to hoodwink the public into believing the 600 eyewitnesses were wrong was all that was needed for the press to stop investigating it. I think Obama is being brilliant here. This pick is going to unwedge the TWA 800 cover up.

You can whine & fuss til hell freezes over (Didn’t Al Gore say that was supposed to alreadty have occured??), the fact remains in the world today, our first line of defense is our intelligence gathering community. If Obama screws that up, your going to be begging for the Bush years to return. No one will really ever know just how many times attacks on the US were thwarted since 9/11, just as you will never know if it would have your family who may have suffered if those attacks had not been stopped.
All this BS about how your rights have been curtailed by Bush and how “bad” we are for using “questionable methods” to obtain information is such a load of cr@p. How many of you who love to run to that nice safe moral high ground would just as quickly hurt another human being if you knew they had information about your abducted wife or child ?
It would be nice is everyone in the world played by the rules. The truth is when your fighting an enemy who loves to use civilian casualties as weapons, you have to throw out those rules.

whats the problem: You must be drinking. Obama will never be the greatest president because he doesn’t have the intelligence to run this country that’s why he chose Clinton’s people. We all know that lacks experience in politics and foreign policy and they will be running the country and he will be president in name only. Whatever he states will be words coming from them. What a mess we are in.

He is very slick and cunning. He knew how to fool everyone and the American public let themselves be taken for a ride. Hillary knows more than he hasn’t learned yet and so does the Clinton people. Let’s see how this country goes for the next four years. His choices are not the best, Emanuel, Napolitano, Solis, and Richardson who stepped down, Biden for VP and others. He has some poor judgment in his picks.

st. peter: Let me to on record to say the Messiah is in Heaven and has now come down yet. People that have referred Obama as the Messiah is an abomination of God. Obama is not a God, he has a bad background of corrupt friends friends especially Ayers and Farrakhan. It was enough with Wright and Father P. but the public dismissed all that to vote him in. The majority of college students would have voted for him anyway even if he had a rap record. 52% of them are on drugs and booze according to the news. Example A.
It’s as if, you’re not even paying attention to what Obama is doing. You realize that many of the powers that be in your party support many of his appointments, right? And it’s understandable that somebody who supported George Bush would think that every president is merely a puppet, but this is certainly not the case with Obama and many people have gone on record indicating as much. But just go on talking and talking without so much of a shred of fact or reason.

That is the difference between you and those of us who are making legit points here. You cant handle the fact these are ligit criticisms are therefore resort to the talking points.
In fact, I listen to and watch many of the liberal pundants. Perhaps you should also try the same thing, listening to all points of view. Liberals have this funny thing, its all ok as long as you agree with me, if you dont, then you are mean spirited, biased, partissan,…etc.
Try actually reading many of the liberal posts on these sites. There are a few people willing to actually engage in real discussions, but mostly they are Bush is greatest evil of all time and the rest seem to spend their time explaining to the rest of us what “change” is.
The facts are Obama won with a certain message. He ran a fantastic campaign, perhaps the best of my lifetime (near 50yrs), but now the fairy tale ends. The harshness of reality hits home. He must do something he has NEVER, EVER done before. He must form a government that can actually operate and work on our problems. He promised “Change”, but never really defined what that change would be. So pardon us for pointing out that his definiton of change seems to equal retread.

I support the appointment of Mr. Leon Panetta – I think President Elect Obama
has done a very good selection – Mr.Panetta is very intelligent, honest and dedicated citizen to the service of our country – I think is one of the most
complete and experienced person in all
areas of government – And I challenge any one to prove the contrary. It is not good to be blind by selfish motives
Congratulations Mr.PEBO on this choice

I am happy that President Elect Barack
obama has chosen Mr.Leon Panetta for CIA
Director – This proves that Mr.PEBO has
a Vision for Change for the Good of our
Country, and He will not be manipulated
by selfish self appointed interested groups pretending to know what is best
for the country while all they want is
to continue their status-quo.- Panetta
will restore Integrity and Trust to the CIA Agency .-Congratulations Mr.Panetta

what’s the problem – how can you say that Obama is the greatest President ever, when he isn’t even President yet? Doesn’t he actually have to BECOME President first? Or do you have a crystal ball? And your definition of ‘greatest’ may be far different than other people’s definitions.

“That’s what campaigning is all about…WINNING without painting yourself into a corner.”
Silky,
That is not change at all. That is by defintion – Politics As Usual ! Nothing at all wrong with that, but don’t try to put a fresh coat of paint on it and claim its something new. He is just another politician, nothing more, nothing less.
I have said it many times, he is a brilliant campaigner, but unlike the most of those before him, he has ZERO experience at forming a government & and actually governing.
That is why his administration is fundamentally a Clinton Retread. To be honest, the country might as well have elected Hillary.

“he has ZERO experience at forming a government & and actually governing.”
And that’s not a change? Give him some time. His decisions so far have far and wide been applauded. Let’s give him some room to work before judging him, shall we?

Abel Tsegga,
LOL !!!!!
Incredible…just 30 Billion and we fix it!!!…Gee, kinda makes you wonder why have already spent billions here in America for the War on Poverty.
Nice site….TOTAL BS !!!!
Nowhere on it do you show how $30B will solve anything. No budget breakdoens for the required line items at all.
Nice button for donations though….

Silky,
He is getting his chance, but just as in the past when liberals were critical of conservatives and there choices & decisions…the wheel comes full circle. He is just another politician and deserves to be treated as such.
I am not the one who ran around screaming change for past 2 years. It is up to him to lay out that change. Remember the “t” word. That means no one shopuld be guessing about what change is, he is supposed to be telling us. He was more than happy to slam every Bush policy during the campaign, its kind weak to hide behind the “we only have one president at a time ” line now! He can lay out his plan for all to see. I mean the details, not the fluff on his website.
I plan to hold him to HIS standards, not mine or yours. He is the one who has been touting “transparency” as one of the corner stones of his administration.
Maybe if he had used that transparency edict on his appointees, he would have avoided the embarassment caused by Richardson. He should have posted those 63 question papers each of his appointees were required to fill out on the net. Maybe someone outside his team would have informed him that Richardson was under investigation (assuming that Richardson did not disclose that fact).

Gary Berntsen, twenty year CIA veteran, three time station chief, and author of the book “Human Intelligence – Counterterrorism, and National Leadership” says Panetta isn’t a good choice for Director of CIA. Of Panetta he states: “we need leadership not management at the agency” and that the Director should be someone “who understands the issues and doesn’t have to start learning on day one.” Berntsen goes on to point out that during Senate Confirmation hearings Mr. Panetta will have answer questions “about what he was doing in the Clinton Administration when al Qaeda was conducting it’s exponential growth. Understand something, that the growth that al Qaeda conducted in the ‘90s was done, much of it while Panetta was the Chief of Staff at the White House.” I and many others will be anxious to hear his answers to those questions, no doubt.
