Obama’s Malaise Speech?

A lot of talk about Obama’s speech already; was it more like Roosevelt’s or Kennedy’s?

I have a weird one to throw out there — how about Jimmy Carter’s "malaise" speech?

Carter never actually used that word, but back in July of 1979, with the country in crisis, President Carter spoke of the dour national mood:

"The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America."

And somewhat surprisingly, to me at least, today President Obama said America is suffering from: "a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights."

Boy, sounds like he is saying America is suffering a kind of malaise.  Carter was pounded in the press for his speech. Obama will not be.  Perhaps it shows how times have changed.

Mr. Obama said that 44 Americans have made the oath. That was corrected with the repeated presidency but also George Washington was a British citizen. So were were Jefferson and Adams, right?

Great coverage of this historic event. Do you have any statistics on left handed presidents vs. right.

No Steve each and every President was an AMerican citizen and born on American soil.

True, President Obama spoke of the reality that is the “nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.”
However, I must point out to you & your readers, that he countered that statement of reality with a statement of promise & deliverance from that fear when he said “On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”
Will he be “pounded by the press” for this one statement or speech overall? I certainly hope not! For why should this man, who has brought this nation together like none other in recent history, be targeted for doing nothing more than speaking gently about the truth of the challenging state of our great nation, and his goals for us to move onward and upward, redefining ourselves as the map & model we should be?

Its somewhat disturbing that the one thing taken from his speech was only thing that could be viewed with a negative slant. But then again isn’t the country in a malaise? How can we pound him for speaking truth?

As a Democrat I was very disappointed in Obama’s speech and the guests performing contributions to his inauguaration. For a President that wants to make a new beginning, there sure were lots of wrenching statements made about our fore-fathers and slavery–a subject that the citizens of America today had nothing with which to do. I think that Lincoln would be very disappointed that “race” was brought into the factor for Lincoln was not a man seeking to free the slaves, but a man who wanted America to stay together as a whole country, a country not divided with two separate forms of government. For instance, the statements were made over and over about “We” and “Our” triump over the past followed by comments about slavery and the Blacks’ freedom. Those statements didn’t make “all” the American people feel as if the Presidential address was being made to every American. To top the address off, the last guest’s statement, “Let the Whites do right!” was not only racist, but will probably drive a larger wedge between the unity of American people. Why did Obama not get many applauses? Well, consider that he mainly addressed his speech not to the American people in general, but to the triump of the Black peoples. Obama will never be known as a good President now, but rather a “Black” President because his people want to emphasize so much on the color of his skin. Blacks were freed years ago. I’m glad they finally realize that they’ve had the same freedoms as Whites since Lincoln served and I pray to God they will finally drop their racists comments and move into the future and out of the past which occurred over a hundred years ago! Our nation will never be whole as long as the NAACP influences the President and makes such racists remarks about the Whites. Obama should be ashamed to have allowed such a statement. God Bless America!

Only 43 individuals have taken the oath as President. Grover Cleveland was elected to two non consecutive terms as the 22nd and 24th President .

The power of media
In the days leading up to Obama’s swearing-in there has been a euphoria raised to a crescendo by the relentless media blast right from the FM stations dedicated to the hip-hop music and rap to the much solemn TV shows. The so called media over-kill is nowhere to be noticed. What is it that the people so desperately seek in their times of gloom and despair… well the media and Obama himself call it “hope”. What US of A has been touting as its moment of glory and history has already been achieved by many lesser known and smaller nations, years ago. Countries like Bangladesh with a predominantly Muslim population re-elected a woman as its Prime-Minister, so did Sri-Lanka and Pakistan. India had her first woman Prime-Minister in the seventies and Presidents from all possible representative community and caste. These are the so-called third world countries which were under colonial rule for over two centuries. What does the super-power and the most developed (at least militarily) country offering the world?
I believe just this, that when the mighty brings in something new for itself it believes that it is the first and more so if the media backs it.
But I sure hope that this euphoria of hope is used smartly by the media and the powers that be to instill a sense of equality and peace in times of real depression.

Paul Fisher and others need to get a new world dictionary and look up the word racism/racist so they can use it properly, if the situation warrants it!

I must respond to the impassioned comment made by L. Purdue, who believes that President Obama’s references to slavery and race in America were unneccessary because he thinks those days are in the past.
Unfortunately, for many sincere non-Black people, they do not have a clue that not only is racism still alive, but all he needs to do is read the news about all the racial epithets and threats on Obama’s life owing only to the fact that he is Black. Not only that, but news was full of stories of Black children boarding school busses the day after Obama became President Elect, being chanted by white children with screams of “Kill Obama, Kill Obama, Death to Obama” and worse. Also, crosses were burned on lawns of homes owned by Black families in integrated neighborhoods.I have personally had comments made from non-Blacks saying he did not have a right as a Black man to be president. I could go on and on. But suffice it to say, the fact that L. Purdue is disappointed by President Obama’s references to race and slavery are reflective of the fact that we still live in two worlds – a Black world and a White world — world’s where one does not experience the challenges of another. I hope L. Purdue, whether Ms. or Mr., will come to realize the truth of the land where we live, and understand that to pretend to be blind to the truth, is to walk in the darkness of ignorance.

Sorry ndl….but “On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”….is nothing but trumpeting his own horn….on THIS day we gather to inaugurate Obama, who believes HES is the choice of ‘hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord’….the shear arrogance is STAGGERING! And your statement that Obama ‘has brought this nation together like none other in recent history’ is purely asinine, as he has YET TO UNITE ANYTHING! He just took the oath of office, and has done NOTHING but win an election.

Time has not changed since Carter.
We are simply and finally realizing the truth that has always been there with the greed and corruption in our government. The media has corrupted the truth and so it took us a while to realize it.

I agree with Paul Fisher. Here we have a black president, and I now am following him, and we still get those who have to push the black issue.
I had no slaves. Nor did my father before me. It is so far under the bridge but there are some who seem to want to use the issue to empower themselves over others. Keep it an issue in the forefront so preferential issues assure you get a job over a more qualified candidate. Right?
Obama was a bastard to bring it up again. It is just rubbing salt in a wound that put a black mark on his name and will likely be his undoing.

The eroded tone of civil discourse was set by Obama at the inauguration. This proves Obama is not the “uniter” he claims to be. His fellow travelers (liberals / Marxists) are now emboldened. I fear the gutter has come to power.

Posted by: erinzdad | January 21, 2009, 5:22 pm 5:22 pm

he is not legally the president due to where he was born and the fact that he was a naturalized US citizen, so this whole inauguration and what’s going on now in D.C. is irrelevant.

Thank you C. Forche for pointing out the nonsense written by L. Pardue. And I am not quite sure why John Berman is stirring it up–at least he admits he is throwing out a weird one. Right John, you are weird and the quicker you throw yourself out of ABC, the better! Now back to where we were–”put aside your childish differences”.

The only thing I don’t like about Obama is his Marxist slant. Stalin was known as a “coffeehouse radical” before he mass murdered some 40 million people. I don’t trust Marxist-Communists.

No, Jenny, Obama was not born on American soil. He was born in Kenya, and he’ll be wearing zoris and an orange jumpsuit before the year’s out.

What exactly does this mean:
“Let the Whites do right!”
I’m white, and experienced a lot of racism growing up – against whites.
How exactly does this comment further race relations? Seems only to continue to dwell on differences in race, not similarity between all Americans.
I’m guardedly optimistic that racist remarks like this will cease as time goes on, but so far… not so much.
Best of luck, President Obama. I hope America is truly a stronger and better nation in four years… not some Westernized version of European socialism. *
* Remember that Europe is full of old world prejudice and racism – that continues to this day!

This is in response to Erin Z dads comment about Obama’s right to be president. Here is a statement made by Obama today on his first day in the oval office and his executive order allowing for more transparency into the executive branchs’ dealings:
“For a long time now, there’s been too much secrecy in this city,” Obama said. “This administration stands on the side not of those who seek to withhold information but with those who seek it to be known,” Obama said. “The mere fact that you have the legal power to keep something secret does not mean you should always use it.
“Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”
It is unbelievable how hypocritical this statement is. After our new POTUS has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars sending a legal force out to defend his right to keep all of his records sealed or private from the American people (for example, his vault copy birth certificate as Erin said) he has the audacity to say this and draft this order. Well, atleast maybe we will learn more of exactly what Bush and Cheney were doing over the past 8 years. On the other hand, does this transparency you speak of above President Obama apply to your birth certificate verfication to hold the office you now hold? I really would love to believe he is going to be different, or make a change. And I like the idea behind this executive order he made. However, I really believe there are alterier motives here in drafting and executing this order because he can not hold the same test to himself personally regarding his birth certificate and being transparent in this fashion on a personal level.

C Forche must be talking out of his ass because there have not been any so called Cross Burnings FOR DECADES. A Canadian MP from BC was ALSO caught lying about “seeing cross burnings” & later exposed as having fabricated the entire occurrence. There is indeed racism in America BUT it is Black against White as the multitude of Black against White hate crimes attest to! Furthermore: I think this Forche character is a seminar poster or false flag poster engaging in pure propaganda because the notion that anyone could get away with making anti-Black comments let alone cross burning in this day & age is most ridiculous on its face! If what he said was true then the news media would be covering it as a BIG story! There would be round the clock coverage of the so called racist chants & most certainly of the alleged cross burnings. Furthermore: cross burning is an ancient Celtic tradition which is still practiced in Scotland today as the KKK only USURPED the tradition.

Since the issue of slavery has been brought up: I just though I should remind all that the first slaves brought to America were White & that quite a lot of White Americans are ALSO the descendents of slaves. Read more at: http://www.afgen.com/forgotten_slaves.html Therefore it behooves us to eschew racial politics on this issue & to be mindful of the suffering of the White slaves as well as they were often treated WORSE than the more noted slaves.

Zigeuner. Obama fits the mold much more of a classic Fascist. Fascists tend to rise to power during economic downturns often promising all sorts of big government remedies & engaging in over the top patriotism while really just enhancing the power of the State & covering for the true power which never subjects itself to a vote & for which Obama is just another puppet for.

Yes, Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison grew up as British citizens, but once the Brits were overthrown by the Revolution, they all became in effect, American citizens. Obama was born in Kenya and thus is not eligible to be president. He is a pawn of Israel. He is looking for bodies to send to Afghanistan right now to die for Israel, and is playing along with the warmongers who tell him he can’t end the war in Iraq any time soon.

If one assumes Obama is sincere and gifted (which I don’t yet btw), the reason for the clearly grim tone of both his acceptance and Inaugural Speech could be the following:
He knows and believes he is the Chief Representative (not unlike Monarchs of Yore) to the People whose job is to balance their Interest with the interest of the Elites (aka Barons of Yore). As he assumes the Position, he is learning just how Much the Elites control the Presidency and the Republic and this explains his Manifest Lack of Joy when addressing the People, for the sub-text of his message is:
‘Be Afraid; be Very Afraid. Only if ‘We-The-People’ are Truly connected with The Executive Presidency can We have any Hope to Change the Status Quo and even then, it is only a fragile Hope.
Because such Hope is so fragile, that is why his most important national Speeches of late have been so Grim.
Such grim-ness is a message we should all take to Heart, for it is accurate and timely.
2009-10 will be truly Momentous!
