Obama’s Nuclear ‘Football’ Briefing
Right now the president-elect is in Blair House getting ready for the inauguration.
It’s astonishing to see the energy of all the people on the National Mall who are going to share in the public rituals of the transfer of power today.
But some time in the next hour, Barack Obama will have a private ritual that symbolizes that change of power.
He will have his national security briefing, as he has throughout the transition.
But at the end of that briefing, the military aide that carries the briefcase with the nuclear "football" — the codes for launching any kind of a nuclear strike — will instruct the president-elect on how to do that.
That will happen before he goes to the church service at 8:25am this morning.
He won’t get the actual card to launch the strikes until after he is sworn in.
But this morning, in that final presidential briefing in the next hour or so, he will receive those codes.
The true transfer of power has begun.

Where do all of you misinformed people get the information that Kenya is Obama’s homeland? Just because his birth father was born there? Obama was born in Hawaii or Kansas of an American Kansas born mother. The last time I heard just because you have a parent born in a foreign country does not automatically make that country your homeland. Hell, my mother was born in Germany but Germany is not my homeland it is hers. Try to get your facts straight before you make uninformed comments.

But somehow you “conservatives” STILL think Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rummy and Dubya did SUCH a great job! You republicans have so much to be proud of… and yes, your next generation – Palin – She’ll be just great too.

Not necessarily “teenage”, but not at all uncommon. What rock have you been under? In fact, this is two presidents in a row who have done cocaine. And that’s all we know of. I’d say there’s a good chance Clinton did, as well. Recreational cocaine use is much more common than people who haven’t been exposed to it know.

It so very much saddens me to read through the comments of those who are so very bitter simply and honestly for the mere fact that we have an African American president. Be he bi-racial or fully one of African heritage, be he one with or without any military experience, whether we feel sadness or glee, he IS the individually elected to run this country and this is something that we all have to accept whether we like it or not. Though I may be one of democracy or a belief in the republic party, we have got to stop all of the bitterness that WE ALL seem to hold on to and try within and amongst ourselves to pull one another out of the mess we are in. Continued bitterness and anger will not fix the mess that we’re going through and we can only get through all of this by holding on to each other, black and/or white, republican and/or democrat. I’m certain that someone will respond with some anger to my message, and in an early response to what may come, I say “it’s okay…you have that right.” God Bless this country no matter who runs it.

It is sad that so many people still think that Bush and company actually cared about the United States and that 9/11 was done by terrorists. Stop being so ignorant and stupid. Some of you people keep being adverse to everything that is good for your country (such as Obama, Socialism, and more gun restrictions). It is people that think like that that keep the U.S. from being as great as it could be.
Socialism is not fascism. America needs some Socialism so people will stop being so greedy and selfish. Most things in the U.S. are very cheap, yet a lot of Americans are in a lot of debt. Why? They don’t stop spending. They want tons of stuff, so they keep buying and buying without using their brains.
Americans need to get their heads out of their rears and start thinking.

Mike_C, I wouldn’t kick anyone’s butt. I’m just a poor, helpless female who is the victim of the sexist press. I’ve been exploited by the MSM. I’ve been capitalized on by the likes of Katie Couric and Tina Fey. Feel pity for me, please, then make me feel all better by votin’ for me in 2012. I deserve a big inauguration also because I’m just so darn special! -wink-

Could someone please strangle the guys in the cubes across from me that keep whining about Obama… Leave your politics at home!!!!! I don’t feel like listening to it all day. Get over it already. Worry about the things you have control of in your life. Or maybe you should just get a life….

Wow. Great comments. While I agree Obama does not have the experience that many of the candidates including some of his cabinet members. I do believe that many Americans, better yet the majority of US (landslide) black, white, Latino, immigrant, working class, white collar, military born or star childs from the sixty’s – saw this as a good quality to have.
Obama’s connections to terrorism and corruption in Chicago has no teeth. And during his run for Head of State his competitors knew it, and would rather not tacle it given the skeletons that could float to the top during their years of political strife. If the Republican party leaders appear to want work with Obama. Why cant the average American.
Today is a good day. Tomorrow will be hopefully be better.

Will you all let the Palin thing go!
Stop the hate. Palin is not a part of this and the election is over.
You all sound like a bunch on children

chattyway what are you honestly talking about? you sound absurdly condescending, it is not easy to assume a seat of power and lead an entire nation. There really is no substance in YOUR claim because of the lack of elaboration. It has not been hinted in his entire campaign that he has been “playing other presidents” and if people are so dumb that must throw you in the pile with the rest of us. Don’t waste our time and spare us your “words of wisdom”. No one is asking you to conform to anybody’s opinion and i believe in freedom of speech but DO NOT ridicule other people and their beliefs just because you had the time to.

To the people who want Palin to run in 2012. Please make her the candidate. Let’s see if Americans will vote for someone who thinks humans walked with dinosaurs 6000 years ago.

All of you are so negative. I didn’t vote for Obama but for the sake of my nation I hope he does a fantastic job. Do I think he will? No. But I still hope I am wrong for our nations sake. Also, a lot of people are craping on George Bush. He might not have been your choice for president but he was the choice of the majority and he did keep us from getting struck again since 911. Some respect for your leader. That’s the first problem with this country right now. No respect. I was raised with it. Most of you were not!!! Disgusting!

If you don’t plan on doing what it takes to make this world a better place to live in, then please, excuse yourself from the rest of us that do.
Thank you.

Either Chattyway is pulling our leg with a little provocation or he is seriously paranoid. Tanks with Obama’s face on them roaming the streets of America…. Ahem… Cough cough. That is funny though. I could see a Simpsons or South Park episode on that theme.

I don’t get some of the comments on here. I mean, it’s a done deal and I still had to make sure I didn’t accidentally come to a pre-election post from October. Obama’s our president. That’s it. If you want him out, look for an opportunity to impeach him. Granted, he won’t make it nearly as easy as Bush did, and even then W managed to stay in office. If a complete screw up could do it, do you think you have the slightest chance of impeaching Obama, let alone voting him out in 2012?? Reality is harsh. Of course, President Obama has been in office for about 4 hours now. Let’s see how the 1st hundred days go before we start spouting our unibomber-Montana-militia-sounding paranoia about Islamic uprising and socialist armies. (Is it even possible to be socialist AND Islamic?)
On the other side of the coin, McCain and Palin didn’t get it. Obama supporters can breathe a sigh of relief and nothing more. Stop living in the past. We’re all well aware of how things went and what the Repub Party inevitably came off looking like (most of us are aware, anyway). It looks bad kicking people when they’re down. What happened to setting an example? If it truly is a time for change, why do I keep seeing the same nonsense over and over again from both sides? It’s sickening. Act like adults, for crisakes. This is our country’s future, not a college football game. This is still our country. We’re still in charge. When has anything run smoothly when the owners and operators do nothing but fight each other? If this country is in such a mess, we have only ourselves and our pettiness to blame. Just look at this comments page.

It is ironic that people still say that Bush “kept America safe after 9/11.” It should not even happened in the first place. Bush is part of the reason 9/11 happened. Most Americans are just too blind to see it.

I am hoping for the best from Obama. But to many of his other supporters I would like to say, no one likes sore winners. You have been whining since W. won in 2000. Whether you think Gore lost fairly, or was cheated, it doesn’t matter. He was elected, and he served his term and now it is Obama’s turn. I doubt he will be the miracle worker that some expect, and I don’t believe he will be the villan that others are hoping for. It think both the extreme left, and the extreme right will be sorely disappointed. Right now, he has a chance to prove himself. A least the Bush administration was far more gracious as they are leaving than the Clinton administration was. In spite of numerous false claims, there was vandalism when Clinton left…perhaps not as much as some claimed, but departing staffers did act immaturely. Let’s give Bush credit for leaving with dignity and grace.

All, can we look at things from a human life perspective and embrace the fact that a civilized world and people are the only beings that can advance human life without destroying itself and maintaining a safe world for it’s children? It is time for a worldwide HUMAN movement void of petty, regressive, political and religious strife. And for this cause, there is no better person right now than Barack Obama, for I trust that his heart is good, and he has the ability to move the world towards good of humanity. I just hope he aims that high.

To those searching to change America, but
disrespect a President,ie socialist liberals. Hug a Tree today Adopt a Whale, and kill future Americans under “a woman has the right to abort umbrella”; yes today we turned a leaf away from freedom toward total hypocrisy. We’ll be back.

Chattyway, and other of his ilk, are mere parrots of Rush-Hannity-Beck-Levin-Colter-etc. Original thought isn’t part of the game; much easier to outsource the hard work of research and fact finding. To this crowd selective opinion, not fact, is truth.

What a shame… As a combat veteran I’m disgusted by the posts I’m reading from both the far Left and far Right. Do any of you truly care about this country? It’s obvious you’re only satisfying a selfish and destructive need to bring others down. Not exactly the type of American behavior that made this country great.
God bless my former Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush, and my new Commander In Chief, President Barak H. Obama!

Wow! The masterful George SteppingAllOverUs is at it again! He showed us the behind the scene of Hope/Change Superman. What an insight! What a remarkable man Obama in soaking all in the middle of the tense and terrifying moment by moment of the Change of Power without a glitch by Obama! Wow! I’m relieved.(I actually relieved myself a few minutes ago.) We are SAFE in the hands of George SteppingAllOverUs reporting to us moment by moment play of Hope/Change Superman. What can we expect in George’s next episode? Perhaps he can reveal to us what color boxer the Superman is wearing or how many different kinds of boxers? Why stop there? The liberals live in a very open society with Heffner and Flynt on their supporter list. Perhaps George can reveal to the women of the world what kind of sexy teddy Michelle wore on the first night at the WH. I’m afraid to say “_hite” since we should show reverence to the first _lack president. Stay alert for the next episode of George SteppingAllOverUs takes us behind the scene of Barack’ MovingOnUp _hite House.

I miss Chattyway… at least that guy was funny in his idiocy. The rest of you are just embarrassing dimwits. Kennedy and Mary Jo K. I firmly believe that he knows he will answer to that someday as he is walking up those stairs…..how could he not know it? No excuse for what happened that night, but did anyone ever investigate what her parents did??? the following weeks….for the life of me that is one thing I could never understand….selling your daughter’s life??? not enough money in the whole world for me to ever even think of that…thank GOD the new administration is in office and we have made it so far…….take care all of you…..

I know all the nukes are kept in “Red” states, but do you think he could limit their use to “Red” states? Close Club Git’mo. Build a new one in ANWR. (That would put an end to terrorism.)

Donna: YOU are uninformed. Pres Obama’s own Grandmother has stated that she was in the delivery room in Kenya when he was born. Why didn’t he just request the Governor of Hawaii to release his ACTUAL birth certificat instead of having lawyers file lawsuits to block the request? What is on his web site is NOT his birth certificat, it is a “certification of live birth”, something very different. But I know, we can’t be bothered with the Constitution.

MIKE C. WROTE:
“Where do all of you misinformed people get the information that Kenya is Obama’s homeland? Just because his birth father was born there? Obama was born in Hawaii or Kansas of an American Kansas born mother. The last time I heard just because you have a parent born in a foreign country does not automatically make that country your homeland. Hell, my mother was born in Germany but Germany is not my homeland it is hers. Try to get your facts straight before you make uninformed comments.”
I really enjoyed “Obama was born in Hawaii or Kansas…..”
We may someday know if it was Hawaii, Kansas or Kenya! He did pay an awful lot of money to alot of attorneys so we don’t find out though!

Some of the comments in this thread are just embarrassing.
RepIsRight, dlcrocket, Chattyway, TK, RadioGuru, Ford Fairlane – you guys are complete retards. No wonder the Republican right is in such a mess if any of you are indicative of the level of intelligence in the party.
You really should give President Obama a chance, better yet I’d get used to seeing him in the White House. Historically speaking the chances of ANY Republican winning the Presidency in 2012 following this result are slim to none.
Grow up and get used to it.

How bad is it that by the time Im half way through the comments, I forgot what the heck I just read in the article. Now, I was undecided on who I was going to vote for despite being a republican normally. This wasn’t about color, age or sex either… it was about MY WALLET and what’s best at this time in the country’s history (in the making). I voted for McCain and Obama won… Am i going to cry about it, NO! Am I going to wish that he fails like that moron Rush says… NO! The federal government is too big to make change effectively and the problems associated with that are that the pendulum always swings too far (both ways). Remember this in 4 years and re-analyze the situation before you curse a man just because he wasn’t who you voted for. Like was mentioned earlier, this isn’t a football game. It’s not a competition, it’s democracy and it’s a beautiful thing that you rarely see.
