It is funny that the crticism of Sarah Palin is so focused on the personal. She is a politician, her political beliefs are what I need to hear about to make a decision on whether she is presidential material. I watched her state of the state address and was impressed but still need to hear what she would do on a national level.

What I like about the Governor’s record is that she has maintained a budget surplus. Even then, she has cut state government instead of eating into the savings account to address the current economic downturn. That is sound governance. I don’t care where you are on the political spectrum, you have to admit that is almost unheard of for politicians today. Responsible goverment might not be flashy but it is what we need in Washington.

How she took care of her kids and told me alot about how she is a mother. And being a good mother means your a great manager, counselor and can multi task. I was not impressed with her personally. Most women in my office were turned off for her, I know of at leadst 5 Republican women who voted for Obama not because of Mccain because they couldnt stand her. Marissa, Governor Palin has shifted expenses as any good Governor would do when faced with an economic slowdown. She has also signed a deal for the gas pipeline that will greatly help the people of her state. Every governor in Alaska over the past 30 years has been trying to get that done and failed until Sarah Palin. Also, Governor Palin’s oil proceeds were enhanced because she was able to stand up to the oil companies. I don’t think that is a bad thing as you suggest, I think she acted as a good representative for the good of the people she serves.
You want to dismiss Governor Palin because you dislike her personally but she has a compelling record. She did not get anything handed to her because she belonged to a certain family. She does not come from a wealthy family so she had to work hard to get ahead. Again, these traits are almost universally lauded, except when it comes to Governor Palin.
I think she deserves consideration based on her success and hard work.

It gave her an opportunity to speak with the President about the ANWR legislation which proposes to permanently prohibit oil drilling in northern Alaska. Losing this opportunity would be a huge blow to Alaska and be stupid on the part of the US because there would be no environmental effect and an opportunity to supply the US for 25 years. So far in her history Governor Palin has been successful in everything she has done. That is called accomplishments. Think what you may about the election her history was out there before being chosen to run as Vice President and ignored by all pundits because they only focus on what is in front of their noses. When she came as a surprise they all felt they had been taken advantage of because of their own ignorance and immediately set out destroy her any possible way they could. Not a single hello Governor would tell us some things about you and your accomplishment and the stories behind them; let us get to know you and what you think you can add to your party’s effort. Rather it was what is your solution to the world and domestics problems, what do you know about this doctrine, do you read all the things we think you should and on and on and we don’t think you are even close to qualified so why don’t you quit before you embarrass yourself. Okay so now the election is over let everyone pile on and determine all my decisions and run me through the gauntlet for 4 years without even knowing anything about what will be the issues of 4 years from now. I think Governor Palin has a future if she wants it but the path is in some other way than trying to be a front runner for 2012. Too many unknowns and too many false perceptions to erase and no national platform to perform on she needs time to do more on a scale that brings national admiration, more accomplishment. She will accomplish much more as Governor and in others places in the future and will establish herself as qualified and able but unlikely in 2012 and probable slow her down if that is her goal and the opposition has a big part depending on their ability to accomplish and to date they haven’t anything to write home about.

Actually she’s one of the more honest republicans- unlike President Bush- she admitted in her RNC the war is about energy(oil). She also took the heat for other republican scandals which she has no involvement in( Frannie-n-Freddie).
As far as Alaska goes, that state functions on big oil business- her involvement in the republican agenda is detailed- if we aren’t mistaken the Bush family business is oil (Zapata) its only likely she’ll play along to survive them, being Alaska’s economy is “energy dependent”. The Bushes are a reflection of the kinder, gentler America- and although President Bush orders tortures oversea’s, executions in Texas and the murder of dictators whom reside over oil (terror fields) in Iraq- he and they are just nice U.S. politicans/business people whom tried to help Sarah become vice president and want all Americans to make money, keep their homes and get excellent educations and drill for oil.

I look forward to Governor Palin running in 2012. I believe the liberal on this board who speak out against governor Palin are typical of most liberals. They make personal attacks because they are ignorant and arrogant. However, I do think it serves Sarah Palin well in the long run. When she runs in four years the failure of the Obama administration will be evident (not wishing for failure but I am a realist). When a politician runs against someone who has not been successful and all that person can offer is personal attacks on their opponent, they lose every time. I still think liberals are unwittingly helping to elect Governor Palin to the presidency with these attacks.
If you liberals truly fear a Palin presisdency then you should be working to help Obama succeed. No amount of personal attacks will help him in 2012 if he is not successful; Palin will win by default. Now, I think that is a good thing but I am first and foremost an American. I don’t want to see Palin win the presidency just because she can triangulate between the hatred of Obama’s liberal supporters and Obama’s own failings. That however seems to be where we are headed. I would prefer Palin wins the presidency by fully explaining her philosophy on governance; reducing the size of government, reducing taxes, strengthening states rights, energy independence, and political reform.

Want more reason to be confident? Democracy Corps released a poll that showed Obama’s approval is down to 55%. Do you understand how significant that is? Obama get’s nothing but favorable press and Governot Palin gets nothing but negative press and yet there is only 6% difference in their approval ratings. I really think the fix is already in for Palin in 2012.

I like Sarah Palin. She seems down to earth and has become successful on her own effort. When so many politicians get elected just because they come from a certain family or because they are rich, Sarah Palin demonstrates that old fashioned hard work and competence can still bring success.
I think she is a great role model for my daughter. I hope one day my daughter will emulate her work ethic and her determination to overcome any obstacle. This might sound corny but I think Sarah Palin has that same uniquely American attitude that our grandparents generation had. Tom Brokaw calls them the “greatest” generation – I think that is fitting when it comes to describing Governor Palin.

It would appear that there isn’t much to Gov. Palin but personal issues: She time and again has shown that she is shockingly undereducated for the job, and what is worse,unaware of that fact. She seems greedy, as evidenced by the shopping scandal. Her platform and personal opinions are directed mostly toward telling others how they must live their lives according to her beliefs, which is pretty much not what America stands for. (Try to remember that Americans are not all Christians and that America is founded on freedom of religion, of thought, of ideas.) She has certainly shown herself to be not above using her political position to punish her enemies. She refuses to follow the rules of debate. She only was elected governor of Alaska by a fluke, by being in the right place at the right time. All that we see and think about her is based on how she acts, what she does.
None of this is political philosophy. But, as a matter of fact, my political philosophy is grounded in right and wrong, using facts as guides; it is not disagreement.
Come on, people, get a clue. Read the news and keep track of the facts. Forget party politics and think what is good for our nation.

Gravy, she is the governor of a state. That is an accomplishment that only 50 people can claim at any one time. You can go to her web site to read about what she has done during her administration. And again, she did it on her own. That is so rare in politics today. I also think it is valuable because no politician will change the system if they have succeeded because of that very sane system. That is why I and many others have great confidence in her ability to really make a difference as president. I assume you are an Obama supporter and I will not speak ill of you for that. However, I see him as someone that came up through the system and therefore incapable of implementing any real change. I hope I am wrong but I just don’t see how he can change the system that he relies on. We really need change and I think Sarah Palin could deliver it.
On the personal side, I think she is courageous. She chose to give life to her son even though she knew her own life would be made much more difficult. That is character in my book. People who try to paint her as selfish are foolish. It is very clear that she loves and treasures her son, just as I treasure my daughter.

Everyone is talking about the election of 2012 and we are only into the first month of 2008. I think it would be advisable to see what Mr. Obama can do in the next 4 years before we re-elect him to another 4 years.I have seen what the “bailout” has done for the working people (nothing,but, put us further in debt while, helping the money people again) and I can pretty much see that the “STIMULIS” is really not geared in our direction either. All we seem to be doing is footing the bills, while, our “LEADERS” keep on spending like the well will never go dry. If I get in debt over my head I am told that I am living beyond my means and I should’nt be doing that. The States that are in the “RED” are told that they need to cut programs, while, Washington just keeps pumpimg out to the wealthy. We are not able to take care of the needy we have and we have Politicians screaming that we need to Legalize 11 million more that need our help. Why don’t we get to a point that we can take care of the people we already have before we bring in more to take away from the working class. If I had someone giving me a free hand out I would certainly vote for them as long as I did’nt have to work to get it.

Not sure how much news this is. As a life long liberal and Democrat i’m happy that we Democrats are running the country. Hopefully Obama can fix the mess that we’ve gotten into. My total trust is in him. I don’t believe the Republicans hate this country but I do believe that their trickle down economic policy is a disaster for those at the lower rungs of the economic ladder. As for Palin, she’s very ambitious but I think she has already risen to the highest level her intelligence will take her. Sarah didn’t lie to you boys. She said she was on state business, which happened to be meeting the President, and that’s what she did.

I say we should forget about Sarah Palin and support Barack Obama … with the same level of support the Democrats used to support GWB the past eight years.

Remember – it was an ABC reporter who made the comment. I “betcha” that Palin will be making a statement soon – and not putting a twist on the truth why she was where she was.
Remember how the media twisted all her comments and activities during the election? This may not be much different.

Sarah Palin wasn’t the reason that the republicans lost the election. In fact if it weren’t for Sarah, John McCain wouldn’t have received nearly as many votes as he did! The reason that they lost was John McCain and the RNC themselves. I now think that if we had elected either Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney as our republican choice in the primaries we would have stood a much better chance in the federal election. John McCain seemed too weak and old and he never did state plainly exactly how he was going to fix our problems. He never said exactly what his programs were. He should have told the voters exactly what he was going to do and how he was going to do it but he didn’t. His whole campaign seemed a little half-hearted to me. It was as if he really didn’t care if he was elected or not. Also the RNC made many mistakes and pretty much “shot themselves in the foot” mostly with their in-fighting and backbiting and their mistakes concerning Sarah Palin. They tried to control and manipulate her and that was a mistake! It would have been much better if they had been much more respectful to her and less controlling. Also there were people in the RNC that clearly did NOT like Sarah Palin and they actively worked against her! I also have to blame the media for the fact that the republicans lost because of their all out smear campaign that they ran against Palin. Nothing was beneath them to say about her and they are still at it (i.e. the lying title of this article!) The late night comedians and Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live didn’t help either. Many people actually believed their jokes! I mostly think, though, the RNC needs to get it’s act together and stop the in-fighting and backbiting and the media needs to go back to it’s roots of fair and impartial and bipartisan reporting.

I had no choice in the Republican Presidential canidate, that decision was made by a handful of liberal states before any conservative votes were counted.
I want:
a smaller gov’t
laws that are enforced equally
strong borders
social programs that will not bankrupt the gov’t
lower taxes (or representation for taxation: if you don’t pay taxes, you don’t get representation)
protection of life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness (including the unborn)
punishment for those that take innocence or innocent lives
politicians with integrity
I have voted Republican because they claim to support these views, I was deceived. Liberals vote for people that say they are willing to hurt other people to make them feel better, state that they will bankrupt job producing industries and the country, and then are offended when the politicians do it?
The new President has already betrayed the USA as weak (as publicly stated by the wacco in Iran), wants to bankrupt job producing industries and has handcuffed the taxpayers wrists to their ankles and welcomed the rest of the world to “make us more open” and suggests the taxpayers have not given the rest of the world enough, and we should be taxed to eliminate the “world’s” poor. Then the same people that say this man is great, have the nerve to say that a person who could survive in the Alaskan wilderness with her gun and a few other necessities is less qualified or knowledgeable. Send them into an Alaska storm with the same supplies for a week, and see who is more qualified to lead. If you can’t survive by yourself, how can you possibly lead others?

Black males gained voting rights in 1870 with the Fifteenth Amendment. Women gained voting rights 50 years later in 1920 with the Nineteenth Amendment. If this is any indication, it will be a very long time before the US elects a female president.

Just to let you know, I’m a democrat, but I always liked McCain (even though I wonder what he’s thinking at times) and I do like Palin. Also, I am from Illinois, and I voted for BO four years ago, but he didn’t impress in the senate. As you may know, we are the Land of Lincoln, and the corrupt politician. Mr. Obama’s got to win me over, and if Sarah wants to talk to him at dinner, more power to her.

Most fairly well-read and educated people see her as low-class, barely educated, unsophisticated about the world (which is why she believed the President of France was calling her—and thought it correct to address “him” as Nicholas) and an opportunist. Others seem to be sold by her beauty pageant charm, religiosity, and right-wing values.
Those of us who find her laughable are still quite interested in her. There’s a kind of fascination to watching what she’ll do or say that I would liken to observing a train wreck.

And this woman thinks she has a CHANCE to run a country???

You and I have different definitions of the word “stiffed”. I still think that that the only way someone can be stiffed is if they paid for something that they didn’t receive or if they paid for someone’s reservation or tickets to something and that person didn’t attend it or show up and didn’t refund the money that was spent for them. My definition is the one that most people have, too! To me a simple refusal of an invitation is not the same as “stiffed”! I still say that this title is misleading and it was deliberately intended to be misleading! And about Katie Couric’s question to Sarah about what newspapers and magazines that she reads, that question was an insult and you know it! It implied that Sarah and the people in Alaska are ignorant and don’t read! I think Sarah was right in not giving her a straight answer about that! In fact she should have refused to answer it and she should have told Katie on camera exactly how insulting it was! Obama, Biden, or McCain were never asked that question. Why should she be?

Implication………the Bill Ayers story was from the New York Times, spluttered about Paling around with yet, the article remained unread. And that’s Katie Couric’s fault that it remained unread. A New York man pleaded guilty Monday to a series of racist assaults allegedly meant to protest the election of President Barack Obama that left one victim in a coma, the US Department of Justice said.
Ralph Nicoletti, 18, was the last of four defendants to plead guilty in federal court to three hate crime assaults on the night of Obama’s election as the first African-American president of the United States. The other co-defendants are Bryan Garaventa, 18, Michael Contreras, 18, and Brian Carranza, 21.
If convicted, they each face sentences of up to 10 years in prison. As part of his plea, Nicoletti agreed to a 12-year sentence subject to the court’s approval.
At the plea proceeding, Nicoletti admitted that he and his co-defendants “decided to assault African-Americans in Staten Island (New York) after President Obama was declared the winner of the election on November 4.
“The defendants targeted African-Americans believing they had voted for President Obama,” the Justice Department said.
Nicoletti drove the group to a predominantly African-American neighborhood of Staten Island, where Nicoletti hit an African-American teenager with a metal pipe and Garaventa struck him with a police baton.
In a separate location on the island, the group assaulted an African-American man, whom Garaventa tripped and pushed to the ground.
In the third assault, Nicoletti ran his car over an individual the group mistakenly identified as an African-American. US media said the victim was Ronald Forte, a white man. Forte sustained serious injuries and was in a coma for several weeks.
US Attorney Benton Campbell called the attacks “shocking and deplorable.”
“On a night of historic significance, these four angry men assaulted their victims in an attempt to punish them for exercising a fundamental right of all Americans — the right to vote. Those who commit such crimes will be swiftly apprehended, prosecuted and punished,” he added.

Via Feministing, it turns out that one of the reasons cited by Sarah Palin for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan is worse than why we previously believed she fired him: merely abusing her power to take revenge on a former brother-in-law. (See this ABC News report for the basics). She did it because Monegan was going to Washington to ask for money to combat sexual assault — Alaska has more forcible rapes per capita than any other state in the Union — and Palin didn’t want Monegan’s request to interfere with her earmarks requests going through now-indicted Senator Ted Stevens. The AP checks it out:
The last straw, the McCain campaign said, was in July, when Monegan planned to travel to Washington to seek federal money for a plan to assign troopers, judges and prosecutors who could exclusively handle sexual assault cases — one of the state’s most intractable crime problems.
In a July 7 e-mail, John Katz, the governor’s special counsel, noted two problems with the trip: The governor hadn’t agreed the money should be sought, and the request was “out of sequence with our other appropriations requests and could put a strain on the evolving relationship between the Governor and Sen. (Ted) Stevens.”
Four days later, Monegan was fired. He said he had kept others in the administration fully apprised of his plans to go to Washington.

(a) An offender commits the crime of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree if
(1) being 16 years of age or older, the offender engages in sexual penetration with a person who is under 13 years of age or aids, induces, causes, or encourages a person who is under 13 years of age to engage in sexual penetration with another person;
(2) being 18 years of age or older, the offender engages in sexual penetration with a person who is under 18 years of age, and the offender is the victim’s natural parent, stepparent, adopted parent, or legal guardian; or
(3) being 18 years of age or older, the offender engages in sexual penetration with a person who is under 16 years of age, and
(A) the victim at the time of the offense is residing in the same household as the offender and the offender has authority over the victim; or
(B) the offender occupies a position of authority in relation to the victim.
(b) Sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree is an unclassified felony and is punishable as provided in AS 12. 55.
So, If you are 16 or older but younger than 18 you can have sex with ages 13-18. If you are 18 or older you can have sex with people 16 or older.

So Sarah Palin’s latest explanation for why she fired Walt Monegan is that he had gone over her head in seeking federal money for an initiative to combat sexual assault crimes, before she had approved the program.
But it now appears that the program in question is one that most elected officials would be wary of admitting they hadn’t strongly backed. According to Peggy Brown, who heads the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Monegan wanted to use the federal money to hire retired troopers and law enforcement officials, and assign them to investigate the most egregious cases of sexual assault — including those against children.
In other words, if Palin’s new story is true, she fired Monegan for being too aggressive in going after child molesters.
ABC News reported yesterday that, although Alaska leads the nation in reported rapes per capita, Palin hasn’t made the issue a priority as governor.
Monegan, however, appeared eager to change that. “He seemed to get the issue and really took it seriously,” Brown told TPMmuckraker.
