Paterson Acknowledges Kennedy Lacks Experience
ABC News’ Eloise Harper reports: New York Gov. David Paterson, in an interview with WOR-AM’s “The Joan Hamburg Show,” said that Caroline Kennedy does have “minuses.”
But Paterson added that having Kennedy in the Senate seat that would be vacated if Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is confirmed as secretary of state would be advantageous because of Kennedy’s relationship with President-elect Barack Obama.
“Caroline Kennedy obviously does have a tremendous relationship with the president and that’s certainly a plus,” he said. “She does not have much political, I mean legislative experience, which is a minus. She has pluses and minuses.”
Paterson has been receiving scrutiny from some local politicians for considering Kennedy as a candidate, including early comments from a New York congressman comparing former President John F. Kennedy’s daughter to "J-Lo" — i.e., singer and actress Jennifer Lopez.
On Dec. 15, Paterson announced that Kennedy had expressed interest in the seat, and the following day she embarked on a tour of upstate New York to meet with local politicians.
Kennedy received criticism for frequently saying “you know” and “um” in the round of local interviews she conducted.
On Thursday, Paterson said he still had more candidates to meet with, and that he still has not met with Kennedy, although they have spoken on the phone.
“I told her right after the State of the State Address, which I gave yesterday, that I’ll get together and sit down and talk to her along with a couple of other candidates,” Paterson said. “I’ve talked to about 10. There [are] about four or five more that I’m hoping to get to in the next week. And then I’ll make a decision on who’s the best candidate.”
Paterson joked, “It ain’t nothing until I calls it,” in reference to speculation tied to his deliberations.
Paterson said there is only one person deciding who will take this seat — himself — and he has said he will not name a replacement until after Clinton is sworn in as secretary of state.
Clinton’s confirmation hearings begin in the Senate on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Caroline Kennedy? Has this country gone completely nuts – You have to give her this – she sure has an ego to think for a second that she could do the job – when she never has had one. Our country is in trouble, why in hell would we give her the time of day?
OO I know smell the liberal press again. Why not cut to the chase and give it to the airhead Couric and be done with it.
What is happening in America – The gays want to call the shots now that they got Obama elected. The liberal are not liberal at all they hate everyone who a different opinion than theirs.
But trust the press they will do all they can to get this loser elected after all she is on the same level as they are. They all know what the great unwashed need.

Funny… the same “mainstream” media that ripped Sarah Palin for a total lack of qualifications to be vice-president (even though she is the sitting governor of a state) is virtually silent about Caroline Kennedy’s “you know,” qualifications (or TOTAL lack thereof) to be a US Senator.
Hmmmmm, I wonder why this is the case???

Because qualifications and diction are not the same thing. Implying that a governor and Carry Kennedy have remotely similar qualifications requires the “suspension of reality”. …of course you obviously helped elect a 47 year old junior senator to President of the nation with the worlds largest economy and only remaining super power…so judging experience is not your thing! LOL

Experience?
Anyone new to the Federal Senate will be inexperiece. Unless they pick an Ex Senator who was forced to resign due to unspeakable behavior. Or someone who retired. Or someone who passed away.
How many of the current Senators had no experience in Washington when they were selected. How many of the current Senators only had state, county or city experience in government. Some of the best Senators came out of the private sector, that is No experience with the Federal government at all.
So what is this really about?

Clearly, 2008 was the year when qualifications and credentials became passe. I’m looking forward to running my pet dog for Congress in 2010. In addition to having demonstrated loyalty and trustworthiness, he’s rescued people and other animals from fires and hurricanes. He also instinctively knows the difference between real and fake and what’s good for me and my friends. But what I most like about him is that he isn’t all bark and no bite. Not my dog. My dog will bite the as* off of anyone who tries to pull a funny on his watch, and I just think that’s really what America needs now in Washington … a well-mannered dog who will not hesitate to bite the hand (and other body parts) off of the hands that try to feed him bull.

I have always like Caroline but I have to confess I was turned off after hearing her speak in lenght. Surprised since she attended Harvard. I was so annoyed by the constant “you know”, I taught it was just me who didn’t didn’t like it, but obviously others picked up on it also. Wow…I don’t agree that reason she says that very often is because of entitlement. To me people who abuse that sentiment show below average intelligent and someone who obviously doesn’t know. I’m begining to wonder if she herself wrote her books. Her vocabulary is very poor, considering she went to an ivy league college. Even someone who attends a community college has more extensive vocabulary than Caroline. I wasn’t impressed, but it could be nerves. Just not impressed after hearing her last lenghty speech. Every other word was you know, you know, no Caroline we don’t know if you can’y fill in a sentence. But whatever, still think she’s decent person.

I think we should put all of the partisan politics aside and concentrate on fixing this country. I am sick of sideline critics who attack anyone with the energy and guts to seek public service in this country. Public servants don’t do it for the money, for sure, and they sacrifice their privacy forever. So, those of you who are so critical of Obama, the Clintons or the Kennedys, put up or shut up. Get involved verses criticizing.

Caroline Kennedy is clean (in a political sense), she is too nice (that may be her disqualification as she will thrown in to shark bowl), she is intelligent she is not buying her seat, she is a good fund raiser for good causes, she is an accomplished lawyer, an author of books and knows the history of this country very well and she is familiar with government. She is probably one of the handful of New Yorkers who has not swindled the rest of the country. Maybe Paterson is right she may not be a good fit amongst career politicians, crooks, perverts, turncoats, big spenders, adulterers, earmarkers etc and she will be a breath of fresh air in the senate that needs a rejuvenation. Gov. Patterson don’t hesitate, give the vacant senate seat (whenever that happens) of a dynamic and able madam secretary of state designate Sen. Hillary Clinton to another distinguished gracious woman and daughter of one of the finest presidents of the last century who gave his life to the nation he loved. Gov. Patterson you may ask is she ready and I would say if not now then when and if not her then who.

There are pluses and minuses with Caroline but I like the idea of having another Kennedy in the Senate as Ted, in all likelihood, will not be in his seat very long. We do not have a House of Lords in this country and for good reason. At least the Bush family members were ELECTED to office. This woman is unqualified in every sense of the word. Patterson should consider Andrew Cuomo who is qualified and has run successfully for elected office. If she wants to run in 2010 she can run then. Until that time, Patterson should respect his constituents and give them representation that reflects that respect.

Other than New Yorkers the rest don’t don’t really care. For the person that said stop the nonsense against kennedy and shut up or get involved, he obviously doesn’t realize that others who want the seat, who have put up, won’t get the chance because of who her father was, so stop being smart ass, because people are involved, unfortunatly one has to have a famous name or be correct to fit in. There’s only a few theis country trusts, Obama being one person, but most elected officials still need to prove themselves. People have right to express reasons/ feelings as to why they would rather see someone else. i think she’s great, but I don’t like the implication that others hold second place to her because of her father’s accomplishments. What about those who have paid for an education? Does that mean anything. I bet she never had to work, and anyone with her inheritance would have time to study and right books, but than to be handed a senate seat is just appauling. It’s not about her as most people like her, it’s about what this message sends. We are still the USA and NOT the house of lords where seats are handed down to a select few. Public assistant my ###. This is more about ego, than public assistance. Why doesn’t she become head of a cherity, or teach in public school, or work face to face with the public. No, it’s the comfortable seat she seeks. whatever.

I agree with the commenter who said Caroline Kennedy is the Democrat’s Sarah Palin. Although Sarah Palin is actually a better speaker and certainly has more experience. There are so many qualified people who could be named to this seat. Why in the world would Kennedy even be under consideration save the fact that she endorsed and cmpaigned for Obama? Give this seat to someone who deserves it and has not just sat passively on the sidelines her entire adult life.

Angel – In most cases, freshman Senators have some sort of legislative experience, whether it is in the House of Representatives, or their own state legislatures…. or at the very least, have held other political offices to which they were ELECTED. Here comes a woman with NO government experience, who thinks she can just waltz into Washington & do the job better than people who have been training for it their whole lives. This thing smells of Obama wanting an additional ally in the Senate.

One of the arguments in favor of Kennedy is tha she will be able to do things because she is close friends with Obama. But when you look at what Hillary Clinton was able to accomplish and bring back to NY as Senator, she was able to do all that without a close friendship with the current president. In other words, a good Senator should not need to depend on a personal relationship to get things accomplished.
Take away a personal relatonship with Obama (and let us remember that political frendships can be very transient) and there is really nothing to recommend about Kennedy. We need someone as Senator who is able to stand on her/his own two feet and able to do things without having to make a phone call to the Oval Office.

Take a look at what “experienced” politicans have gotten our country into. If you want more of the same, then support political correctness and experienced politicans who are working for lobbyists instead of the people. If you feel that Washington is not representing your interests(as I do), then Caroline is a breath of fresh air. She is intelligent, cannot be bought off because she does not need the money, is squeaky clean, has written books on the constitution (which we need to get back to), and has worked very hard to raise millions for the public schools. To those of you who criticize the use of frequent “you knows,” all I can say is that I work with a lot of people who say “you know” and “I was like” a lot; however, they work hard, are very effective, help others, and do an excellent job. Do you want a hard worker who is effective or a polished orator? For those who are critizing her lack of work experience, did the thought ever cross your mind that not all work is done in a paying job. Have you raised millions for the public schools? I have not and would not know where to start. To those who are bad-mouthing her because her last name is Kennedy, I feel sorry for you. You will continue to do what you are doing, because apparently you are not going to take the time to do a little research about her, evaluate that research objectively, and come to your own conclusion. It is easier to hate or oppose her appointment because you hate the Kennedys in general or are hung up on this royalty idea and assume that her last name means that she has no qualifications.

There is NO comparison between Sarah Palin and Caroline Kennedy. Caroline has not had to work a day in her life, everything was handed to her. I think she “bought” her law degrees based on the way she speaks. Good God, who would ever want her to represent them in a court of law you know?

Her vocabulary is very sad, especially as a graduate from Harvard. It would be very sad even if only from a high school, you know, you know, don’t you know. There’s no way this women wrote books on her own, no way possible with her baby talk.

Ummm… why has her HUSBAND been absent in all the media reports??? why isn’t her ‘full’ name Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg used??? Why has she decided this is for her after years of being the quiet, out of the mainstream, non-political Kennedy???
Smells funny to me…

Of course, it could be just another Obama/Emmanuel/Blago type deal going on behind the scenes for ‘APPRECIATION.’

“Paterson Acknowledges Kennedy Lacks Experience” No s/h.it. On the other hand, if the President can be entry-level, why not a Senator?

On second thought, she has experience. She was taught backstabbing by some of the family, bootlegging by her grandfather, and driving by her uncle.
