Republicans Pounce on Reid Story to Insinuate Possible Bias

An interesting development after today’s Chicago Sun-Times story in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., suggests to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagoevich that he pick either Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan but not appoint either Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. or Danny Davis, or state senate president Emil Jones, to President-elect Obama’s former Senate seat. (Reid is reported to have worried none of the three could win reelection.)

Senate Republicans are now pointing out that Jackson, Davis and Jones are all African-American.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, tees it off by saying: "For the last several weeks, Sen. Reid has led the charge to deny the people of Illinois a voice in choosing their next U.S. Senator in a special election. Now we learn that Sen. Reid also took the extraordinary step to lobby against two sitting U.S. Congressmen and the State Senate Majority Leader in Illinois, and instead told Gov. Blagojevich that he supported an appointment for an individual who recently lost a U.S. House election. The people of Illinois deserve a simple explanation from Senator Reid — why does he believe these three Illinois officeholders are ‘unelectable’ to the U.S. Senate?"

More pointedly, a GOP Senate aide writes in an email, "I do think it’s a fair question to point out — what would the reaction be if a Republican had been pressuring a Governor not to pick one of the black candidates? You and I both remember the outrage over Trent Lott’s comments at Strom Thurmond’s birthday party. I’m not suggesting either of them is racist, just saying it seems like there’s always a double standard on how R’s and D’s are judged on things like this."

What say you?

These GOP clowns certainly have no room to talk about anything since they have alienated blacks, latinos, gays, and women from their party!!

Why WOULD Reid dare to suggest that somebody recently shown to BE unelectable (Tammy Duckworth, drafted into politics by Rahm Emanuel AFTER her war wounds) would be more desirable than Jackson, for example, who clearly IS too electable for Reid’s liking.
Are Reid-Pelosi-Obama stacking the deck with Congress-persons who owe their seats to the hahaha “leadership”, rather than to actual election?
OR are they setting the stage for their Republican pals, who elected Obama, to pick up a few seats at the expense of Democratic, un-rich, “blacks”.
If an angry God were to stomp a big shoe on the Capitol, it wouldn’t be surprising.

red alert…it is not just repubs that are concerned about this story…
so are a lot of Dems…this whole Senate appointment stuff is leaving many of us to question the whole process…a bunch of insiders who pick their friends…and leave the rest of us, the voters, outside of the process…
it is as bad as the whole democratic caucus debacle…er, in other words, undemocractic “you know, you know, what I mean” you know…wink, wink…

I think the idea that Duckworth or Madigan are more *electable* is preposterous- especially Duckworth who has been rejected by the voters multiple times.
I think Reid has some explaining to do.
It also puts Blagojevich’s desire to get something in exchange for these appointments in a somewhat different light. Obviously, he can’t sell the Senate seat.
But the Democrats and Obama had very definite ideas about who they wanted in that seat. They were not Blagojevich’s choice, and they were certainly not more qualified than Blagojevich’s choices would have been.
So Reid and Emmanuel really were trying to strong-arm the appointment, and not by choosing candidates the *people of Illinois* have indicated any desire to have represent them.

Posted by: MayBee | January 3, 2009, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

Duckworth and company aren’t just not “black” — they’re all corporate/upper middle class, “rich” by the terms of the hoi polloi.
Looks like the former-Democrats’ “leadership” are trying to cut off Congress to anybody who might be, or might become, infected with any populist notions about … National Health, for example.

Is this really newsworthy. FLASH!!! Politicans always talk to other politicians about whom they prefer for certain positions. It’s called politics for a reason! Are you ignorant enought to think that this is only a Democratic subject? HELLO…Is there intelligent life out there? This stuff even happens at kindergarten so to rate this kind of coverage in ludicrous. Guess what? There is war and fighting in the Middle East and SW Asia. The economy is in the tank, millions of Americans have had their hard earned money sapped, people are losing their jobs…… Get a clue folks!

Much as the whole process stinks, Reid (the dumbest member of congress ever) will now have to find some way to Reid remember the meme that the Clinton’s were pushing during the primary end game, that PE Obama was unelectable?

Posted by: anna perez | January 3, 2009, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm

i agree Cassandra, especially Senator Cornyn. the Republican Party fueled by Limbaugh/O’Reily mindset has made the party the most non-credible on issues of civil rights, equal opportunity and equal protection. Reid’s voting records show his dedication to civil rights. Cornyn’s record (and decisions as justice of the supreme court of Texas) does not support his pompous, hypocritical grandstanding.
it will take years for the Republicans to gain any legitimacy among minorities. just this last election showed how close the Republican Party still is to its racist past.

Posted by: Paul Wall | January 3, 2009, 5:31 pm 5:31 pm

The GOP needs to clean up racism in their own party. Why weren’t they vocal about the CD of “Barak the Magic Negro” circulating through the RNC, or the characterization of Obama on a pancake box which Lou Dobbs bought last summer at the convention?

Posted by: kat | January 3, 2009, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

Let us listen to the tapes and see if he thnks they are “magic negroes”. The reason R’s have a problem in cases like this is because they do things like the “magic negro”. As far as I know, Reid does not have this problem.
Since I am from IL, I can tell you that about any D would win N. IL, but it is very hard for someone from Chicago to win in S. IL (which can be like KY). A lot of the whites do not like blacks there as they have never been around them that much. It is a sad, but true fact. A white D would do better although that certainly does not make it right.

Jake is quite correct. I am a black man living in Pittsburgh who voted Obama but the revelations about Reid’s lobbying against all of the black candidates in favor of one who could not even win her own House race is one I am gravely disappointed in.
If Reid is so concerned about the ethics of this lawful appointment of Burris than he can no longer preside over the process of denying Burris a Senate seat. Unless of course the ethical standard he applies to Burris does not extend to himself.
BTW, Didn’t Reid just serve with two convicted crooks in the Senate in the 110th.
This is as clear as day case of the racial strife still present in our America.

It’s true. At the time when IL. Speaker Madigan changed the session agenda and he had “his Reps.” vote against the special election, it made no sense. These were the SAME people who accused Blagojevich of not doing his job and not being fit to be governor. Lisa Madigan even went on Meet the Press! All because Reid, Durbin, and Madigan wanted Lisa Madigan or Tammy Duckworth for the seat. The national media frenzy with Blagojevich worked perfectly because it’s Obama’s seat and the governor’s legal troubles. They could kill two birds with one stone-get rid of the governor faster and get Pat(I wanna be governor)Quinn to appoint who they wanted. The ONLY possible reason for Patrick Fitzgerald arresting Blagojevich BEFORE anything changed hands was this whole thing would come out. This totally explains Bobby Rush’s comments.

Just so happens Reps found it funny and made a parody of what a Dem meant as a serious discussion.

After all, no Dem congressperson stated they had a problem with it, including the Black Caucus, or if they did, it wasn’t reported.

I love watching liberals and leftists get tangled up in their own PC idiocy. That said, Reid may have a real problem. Does anyone else remember Reid’s nasty, non-specific comments about Clarence Thomas on Meet the Press back in 2004, when (among other things) he said Thomas was an “embarrassment” and that his opinions were “poorly written” while praising Saclia’s intelligence? He gave no examples at the time and Tim Russert demanded none. When questioned later about his comments, Reid cited a purportedly poorly written Thomas opinion, which as it turned out was not written by Thomas after all. Reid made some excuse for that mistake which I can’t recall but it begs the question of why he raised the issue in the first place. There was some huffing and puffing in the conservative media but nothing more came of it. In any case, conservative news junkies have long suspected that Reid is a closet racist. I’m sure his Democratic colleagues do as well. Reid is old and a Mormon. Perhaps he is unable to shake the old time Mormon belief (now repudiated by the church) that blacks are inferior.

They were present during the 8 years you speak about. The economy started tanking when Dems took control of Congress. Do you know how and where laws are made? Or, do you think all that happens is based on policy and that ALL Bush’s policies are/were bad. Many of Bush’s policies are already being accepted by Obama.
This posting was about perceived racial bias by Reid, but has morphed into BDS, or more appropriately BS.

Gee, that’s a creative assertion – so much so, that there’s nothing factual to it. “Barak the Magic Negro” originated with Rush Limbaugh.

Posted by: kat | January 3, 2009, 11:54 pm 11:54 pm

Correction from 11:54 PM posting:
Okay. The Magic Negro caricatures are varied and go a long way back, all the way to 5th century China with African slaves being portrayed as possessing supernatural strength and knowledge. And yes, David Ehrenstein used the term in the LAT, but not in a racist manner. Then it was used in the song,”Barak the Magic Negro,” which was clearly derogatory and originated with Limbaugh before it circulated the RNC.

Kat @ 11:54:00 PM:
You’re wrong too. The term “Magic Negro” WAS first used in an LA Times op-ed, as reported in the Kansas City Star on January 1, 2009 (as well as many other places):
“The evocative phrase “Magic Negro” was first applied to Barack Obama by Hollywood writer David Ehrenstein in a March 2007 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times that concluded: “Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes.” Shanklin adapted the phrase to the tune of “Puff, the Magic Dragon” for a parody that featured Al Sharpton grousing.” (I would provide a link, but my last comment was edited to delete a link I included).

There is a double standard. The Democrats and the lapdog media accuse the Republicans of racism at the drop of a hat but ignore race baiting on the left. The Democrats will control both houses of Congress and the Presidency so there will be no place to hide. The catastrophe of the Obama Presidency and the media that protected him for the last two years will be obvious shortly.

Posted by: Ken Hahn | January 4, 2009, 3:00 am 3:00 am

This is the problem with Washington. When a politico takes office, instead of governing, their focus is instantly on the next election cycle. Its an endless campaign. Thats why we have the politicians we have. They are the ones that can raise the obscene amounts of money to get re-elected. After this last campaign cycle, we are in for more of the same. After it took so much money for Obama to get elected, campaign finance went out the window. The genie is out of the bottle. Expect inductry lobbyists to have more power than ever since they have the cash these politicians need to get elected.

Posted by: glennmcgahee | January 4, 2009, 7:17 am 7:17 am

Of course the media is biased. All we have to do is look at the coverage of every presidential election since JFK. The media was especially biased during this cycle and I suspect, since their guy won, that they will be even more blatant in their advocacy for Democrats in the future.
I don’t care what your political beliefs are, this is bad for America. We need a press that is skeptical and questioning of both parties and will hold both accountable, not just the Republicans. The Democrats have come to believe that the press will always have their backs and why shouldn’t they given the current environment. In turn, this will lead them to believe that they can act and do anything they want (James Carville can see the writing on the wall and predicts 2009 will be the year of numerous Democratic scandals).
Where are the Tim Russert’s of the world? Tim was obviously liberal but he at least went beyond his own political beliefs to do his job as a journalist. He would at least take on Democrats every once in a while. Compare that to most journalist today – there clearly is a a great lacking in the profession.

There are tape recordings. After listening to Sen. Reid on Meet the Press today, I doubt he actually said that. It is so obvious that Blago’s strategy was to play the race card here to make it difficult for Democrats to reject the candidate. Does anyone think Sen. Reid and the other Democratic Congressional Leaders would be acting differently if Blago had appointed a white instead of a black? Hardly.

Posted by: Hal | January 4, 2009, 12:06 pm 12:06 pm

I listened to Senator Reid today on Meet the Press. While he claimed he did not say to Gov. Rod not to appoint Reps, Jackson or Davis or State Senate Leader Jones, when pressed by David, he also admitted he could not remember everything he may have said in the conversation with the Gov.
In politics, it is standard to suggest the one under a cloud is not telling the truth.
It would not surprise me that in this case, Gov. Rod may be telling the truth about the call from Senator Reid.
Bottom line, this appointment of Mr. Burris is legal, the nation has huge problems and the good ole boys are only concern about themselves and their power.

fitz—”according to studies, republicans are more likely to have acheived bachelors degrees. plus, we have an understanding of basic market economics.” that is quite an assertion unsupported by any facts.
if Republicans understand economics better than democrats then we should assign blame to them for this fiscal catastrophe: lax oversight of markets and no regulations.
regardless Republicans did nothing to alert anyone about the impending doom. forgive us for not seeing them as economic geniuses.

fitz—”we have an understanding of basic market economics. you know, supply/demand, that whole thing. let’s see how this works out with heavy-handed regulation for 4 years.”
it is precisely the absolute lack of regulations that caused this financial catastrophe. perhaps you could explain to us supply/demand theory? that is exactly what we have had and why we are where we are.
hopefully “heavy handed regulation” will not last four years but much longer. “free market economics” has shown us how responsible it is. it’s appaling irresponsibility and cocommitant bailout certainly shows us that the “free market” is anything but free, esepecially to the middle-class tax-payer who will ultimately bear the burden of regulation-free markets.

Bush spoke often of the need for reforms of housing finance: first through his budget proposals starting in 2001, and then via his advisers’ testimony to Congress starting in 2002 and then from the stump starting in August 2007 – culminating in his 2008 State of the Union Address, and 17 other times in 2008 alone before Congress finally decided to act.
If America is to reform, we must learn from our mistakes. But the Alinsky trained left has so prevented real communication that we can’t. Barney Frank blocked an investigation into Freddie and Fannie. Do we love Barney Frank and the Dems more than we love America? Looks like it from these comments.

BWahahahaha! Ok. Ok. So why would the republicans build mini-mansions that require high income earners, then send all the high income earning jobs overseas??? Is this the new way to hide their money?

Interesting story. I too would like to hear Senator Reid’s explanation of why he thought it direly necessary to influence Blago against either of the obviously qualified black candidates. Additionally, let this be motivation for us “Americans” to realize that we must take measures to end the days of die hard prejudice and racism bred during the time when Senator Reid and others who just can’t seem to let it go. One major way to do it is by having them openly explaining the basis of their unfounded, uncompromising views. Thanks GOP senate aid for raising the legitimate questions. Stay on the story. I’d like to, at least, hear his answer.

This is a real winner for the republicans! I’d definitely put all my pr resources into any news story having to do with race and especially if it includes black people!
They can’t possibly lose!
