Richardson Withdrawing Nomination
Facing questions about whether he played any part in a "pay-to-play" scheme, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has told President-elect Barack Obama that he is withdrawing his name as a nominee for secretary of the commerce in the pending Obama administration.
Obama accepted the news with "deep regret," according to a written statement from the president-elect. "It is a measure of his willingness to put the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the Cabinet in order to avoid any delay in filling this important economic post at this critical time," said Mr. Obama.
Richardson is withdrawing because of questions raised by federal investigators, who have been looking into whether Richardson and his administration improperly steered state contracts towards CDR Financial Products, a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based firm founded by David Rubin, a major financial contributor to Richardson.
In 2003 and 2004, around the time CDR was awarded nearly $1.5 million in state contracts, Rubin and CDR donated $100,000 to Richardson’s political action committees.
In a statement issued today, Richardson said that "a pending investigation of a company that has done business with New Mexico state government promises to extend for several weeks or, perhaps, even months. Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact. But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process."
In late December, I asked incoming White House press secretary Robert Gibbs about potential problems with the Richardson nomination. "How confident are you that Gov. Richardson and all of your proposed Cabinet nominees will clear the Senate confirmation process?" I asked.
Gibbs said that "what President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect [Joe] Biden and the Transition Team have done is put together what we think is a great Cabinet with many, many strong choices that will be able to tackle the many problems and challenges this country faces…In the case of Gov. Richardson, in the case of anybody else, I think at the end of the day you’ll have a very strong Cabinet in place that’s confirmed in a way that allows the President-elect to hit the ground running on the 20th of January."

Richardson is doing the right thing. Whether he is guilty or not, it would be a major distraction at the beginning of the new administration–one that no one in the country can afford at this time. Obama, his administration and Congress need to hit the ground running, and fast, to tackle the major issues facing this country.

Really!
Wouldn’t it Mr Richardson have better served the public by not accepting bribes or steal from the public. But I guess people from Chicago like think this is okay. I believe almost all politicians are corrupt. Look at the two congressmen from Washington and Oregon. They stole taxpayer money by going on a taxpayer funded “vacation” to Galapagos.

Susan–I highly doubt most sane folk will pin this one on Obama. While I did vote for Obama and therefore may be a bit biased, I think most Americans are seeing a breath of fresh air in his style of governing and the by the quality of appointments he has made to his cabinet. Give the man a freaking chance, will you? He hasn’t even been sworn in yet, and you are out to get him. Get over McCain’s defeat and try for one moment to do something to help this country get back on track instead of trying to tear down the president-elect.

NOT A BLOGO, AT ALL…, BUT MORE A ROBERT KENNEDY.
HE’S BEEN 100% ANTI-CORRUPTION, UNLIKE THE PREVIOUS GOVERNORS HERE, WHO KISSED BIG OIL’S BUTT.
THIS GOP INSPIRED INVESTIGATION OF THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS AND ALL ACCOUNTS ARE THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE RICHARDSON PERSONALLY, BUT MEMBERS OF THE NEW MEXICO BUREAUCRACY.
FACT IS, THIS ULTRA SLOW INVESTIGATION’S BEEN REPORTED OFF AND ON IN THE G.O.P. SUPPORTING ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS NOW, IF THERE WAS ANY FIRE THERE, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN PILLORIED LONG AGO BY HIS ENEMIES IN THE STATE.
WHEN THE NM INVESTIGATION IS OVER, I FEEL RICHARDSON MAY YET BECOME UN AMBASSADOR OR MAYBE ENERGY (AGAIN).

I have to hand it to many of the people posting on this page. They have already lynched Richardson and no one outside of the investigators know the facts to date. Also, none of them have contributed as much to this country as Richardson has.
BTW, Secretary of Commerce was not the post Richardson really wanted. The post he really wanted was Secretary of State. This gives him a way of exiting in a sensible way.

So far the “pay to play” business with Richardson exists as an allegation. If it pans out not to be the case, he’ll deserve recognition for resigning. I have been a registered Democrat since 1951 and voted Democrat most of the time because I believe in the old Democrat party principles. I now feel the Party has left me and I will be registering a Republican or Independent sometime in January. They have just went too far to the left for me. Maybe within the next four years they will straighten their party out, but Obama will never do it. Will take a good man that is more in the middle and have some common sense. Also Howard Dean must go.

Otherwise he’d say ‘bring it on. The 1.5 is just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s almost impossibe now for an honest person to win an election. It’s too expensive to run and you have to play the $$ game in order to survive it.
Our current president and our president elect both bought their way into the White House. All of our Senators and Congressmen are self serving millionaires that are completely out of touch with Middle America.

the trouble is the system of financial support stains everyone and these politicians won’t vote it out. Way to much money on election ads which the TV industry loves. Limits need to be placed on amount contributed and upon expenditures, esp. corporate expenditures. Richardson needs to step aside early and then let the investigation proceed. The more he shoots off his mouth, the guiltier he looks and probably is. The problem is, they are addicted to their own words. They can’t shut up. Obama can’t know every political action they have been involved in. This is bound to happen. The question is, will they be open when the truth costs them. By the way, there are no perfect politicians just like there are no perfect people.

As W. Bush prepares to high tail it out of town. I can say with some amount of certainty that he is with out a doubt the worse President i the history of this country. 8 years of incompetence. An Economy that could very well destroy this country. This is fact and not fantasy.
A war that has killed 5,000 good Americans and cost this country billions of dollars. A good thing for the Republicans is the focus is no longer on this dismal failure.
Enter Barack Hussein Obama. He has a huge mess left by W. Bush to clean up.
As W. Bush retreats to hopeful oblivion, his economic stamp on this country everywhere, we can say Dismal Failure based on 8 years of fact.
In 4 years we can make the same assessment of Mr. Obama. Can he clean up the Bush Mess? Well, when you are at the bottom, you can only go up.
Democrats did one thing right, they whipped 2 useless Republicans and are now in a position to do something good for the country. Do what is right for the country.

Rufus, the “facts” are that we have seen a mindset that government is the solution to all of our problems seep into our political system for 79 years now. Each president is handed a more difficult situation to manage because of the mandates that have come from their predecessors through this relentless pursuit of socialism. Now we have a president that openly champions the very approach that has led us to this growing crisis. Even Bush, the supposed conservative, added mandates for drug benefits and squandered billions on Africa. We are doomed if Obama succeeds in completing the socialist take over of our government.
Posted by: James | January 4, 2009, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm
It is simple. We need to education Americans to make smarter voting choices. Things that gets in the way of that are the party system and the electoral college.
Anyone who voted for Obama was an idiot. Anyone who voted for Bush was an idiot.
Bad candidates come from all parties.
Anyone with a brain would see that Obama was an empty suit with good slogans. Look at his Illinois record what did he do? Nothing!!!! He has corrupt friends, won’t disclose health, birth or school information. Friends with domestic terrorist, buys home from slum lord, wife has a weekly standing lunch date with Louis Farrakhan’s wife. Wife says she hates America. Good. Turn over all the rocks. We are sick of this underbelly of traditional politics. Don’t think for one minute this is something new or unique to the incoming Obama administration. Most recently, the Bush Administration spent MILLIONS of your tax dollars on programs to enrich fat cat Republican donors like failed “abstinence only” education. Multimillionare and big time Republican donor Raymond Ruddy’s for-profit company, Maximus, along with other Christian-right organizations, received AIDS and abstinence grants to the tune of at least $25 million. Ruddy’s business Maximus alone raked in more than $100 million in federal contracts.

Is anyone rushing to ask why Obama did not do a better job of “vetting” his choice for Commerce Secretary. I find it hypocritical of the media to not challenge Obama and his ilk as to why they did not foresee this little snag.
So much for the change that Obama promised… he promised he would not pick Washington insiders, but I think he got really cold feet since he realized the responsibility he had taken on with very little experience. So, based on his own insecurity, he had picked all old war-horses and Beltway establishment people. Where is the outrage among his supporters.

Building, building, building … especially now that He stands mute, hiding behind George Bush’s skirts, while the Israeli government He’s declared “sacrosanct” does its damnedest, on the US dime, to wipe out the Palestinians before His coronation.

If people would check further they would discover that the donation was made 1 year after they received the contract and Rubin made $25,000 and CDR made approx. $75,000 donation which is not much considering the amount of money they had and maybe it was their way of saying thank you which I am sure goes on every day on both sides. I also think he prefers being governor.

Obama transition team was too busy inspecting every thing about Bill Clinton that they let Bill Richardson slide. If Bill Richardson really cared about getting this seat appointed he wouldnt have even accepted the nod. I am sure this is not the first time he heard rumblings about an investigation taking or could take place with his dealings. He just got caught and now Obama has probably made him get out. Bill Richardson you showed no loyalty to the clintons and then obama gave away the cabinet position you really wanted, and then said sorry buddy now you got caught up withdraw your name. time to reevaluate who were your real friends.(answer the guy who appointed you to be energy secretary the on you turned on.)

Ok, I’ll post it again. If you think this scandal is bad, wait for the facts to come out that show the Clinton administration directed the cover-up of the shoot down of TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996.
Posted by: Wait | January 4, 2009, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm
I always thought the FBI were hiding the shooting down of Flight 800 by MISSLE. This would explain what Sandy Burglar was stealing from the Clinton Library. And in is consistent with what happen with that supposed suicide in the park in which the FBI pushed out all other investigators, came to a conclusion that didn’t fit the facts, and helped protect the Clintons from another scandal. Funny how papers stolen from this guy surfaced later in Hillary’s quarters.

SURE they do: in wine-dark Mendocino County (in California’s First Congressional District, overseen by Pelosi’s booze-hound buddy and Blue Dog Mike Thompson), People’s Temple protector and Jonestown facilitator Timothy Stoen — formerly the County attorney — is back on the public payroll of the very county whose “black” population he disappeared, in the District Attorney’s office.

Gov. Richardson should also step down as Governor since his shady dealings have brought such shame to New Mexico. We don’t need leadership that is continually plagued by corruption. Have you heard of the Alaskan bridge to nowhere, well, how about the one track train of modern times? Just look at the New Mexican railrunner. In the late 1800′s Italy built a train to the top of Mt. Vesuvius using two tracks and in 2008, New Mexico builds a one track train system to alleviate highway congestion. This is just another example of forward (a.k.a. illogical) thinking by Former Gov. Richardson. Good thing he won’t be in the cabinet, he’d probably give away more taxpayer’s money. It’s time for Richardson’s political career to end.

I’d like to thank the mainstream media for doing us all a real service digging up dirt on honest politicians like Sarah Palin while totally ignoring ACTUAL corruption committed by Obama’s associates and Democrats in Congress (Frank, Dodd, etc.).
Change is definitely coming. It looks like it’ll consist mostly of weekly political scandals, civil unrest, more war in the Middle East, and the collapse of our economy due to binge government spending. Sure, it’ll be painful. But at least we now know Palin’s grades in elementary school. And that’s what really matters.

I’m not surprised but I sure am disappointed. We’ve spent the last two elections voting out Republicans in large part because of their corrupt ways. Now here come the Democrats, and before Obama can even take office we already have Bill Richardson and Rod Blagojevich staining the party name. It’s time for a serious effort to create greater transparency in government.

Note to Republicans: After 8 years and $100 + millon spent investigating Clinton, holding up the country’s business in the meantime, your cries of scandle will not be heard. That is until you start screaming “investigate Bush and his cronies for treason.”
Posted by: Ron | January 4, 2009, 4:21 pm 4:21 pm
You people who are complaining about Obama and how he is “involved” in so many scandals. There is no evidence directly linking Obama to the wrong doing of others. Now I could start listing all of the scandals the republicans have been in recently but that would generate a long list and people won’t really be bothered to read it. He has not run this country into the ground yet, you can start complaining when that happens. Besides, Bush left a serious mess behind and all of a sudden it is up to this administration to solve ALL of the worlds problems. Bush ran this country into the ground and McCain’s plans analysts have concluded would run it into the ground more than Obama’s plans. Cutting taxes and deregulation simply does not work. Republicans will try to block any effort by the democrats and NOTHING gets done. I hope Obama will bring Congress together and solve the problems as one instead of party politics dividing them up.

After 2 consecutive terms it’s almost unheard of for the same Party to be elected. Like it or not we got Obama. We all know politicians at the state and national level are not altruistic patriots. Even voters who slept through High School history class know about cronyism and it’s certainly not been unusual in the Bush administration. A long line of Presidents have played the game and operate on that cusp between integrity and bribes. IMO, you are making history. We have access to a nationwide town hall and this is our chance to demand new rules.

There must be politicians all over the country in a state of shock, because their standard modus operandi is coming under scrutiny and attack. Large donors have expected, for eons, some return on their money. This has certainly happened in every state of the Union for a very long time.
This week’s New Yorker discusses an Illinois hospital exec who was trying to get state permission to expand her facility and was told that if she didn’t agree to use a certain contractor, she wouldn’t get the go-ahead. She went to the FBI. I had to ask, Now, why would the men who approached her NOT consider that if they attempted to extort her so openly, she might go to the authorities? The only conceivable answer is that this was their normal method of doing business, so that the fact that the lady might report them never crossed their minds.
And I’m quite sure they are by no means alone in their thinking. Or lack of it.
Posted by: Eleonora27 | January 4, 2009, 4:22 pm 4:22 pm
I will give the Democrats credit for one thing- when they find corruption among their ranks, they take action. Richardson probably didn’t withdraw of his own volition, Blagojevich has been abandoned enroute to being removed from office, and Senate Democrat leaders are refusing to seat Raymond Burris, a fellow Democrat. This is unlike Republicans, who tried to cover up the Mark Foley, Tom Delay, and Jack Abromovich affairs. You have to give them that at least.

Democrats, like the republicans, all smell like fish. Anyone with the ability to reason would know this by now. Unfortunatly, you don’t need to have a brain to vote, just be a citizen. In the past only land owners were allowed to vote, as it was understood that land owners are a bit more engaged, intelligent and certainly had more of a stake in how things turned out. Now anyone can vote and they don’t check your citizenship, let alone your IQ.

And especially at public-health functions supposedly PERFORMED by non-profits, large (like the U/C spinoff that paid Michelle Obama almost half a million a year) AND small (like the numerous clinics supposedly delivering health care to the American unrich.

For allegations that McCain is not a natural born citizen, is absurd. Both of McCain’s parents were natural born citizens unlike Obama. When a military family takes up residency in a foreign country as part of their military responsibility to our country, any children born would automatically be given natural born status. For anyone that disagrees with that , I say if one wishes to consider the fact that no military would ever reside in a foreign country under any circumstances due to their children being denied automatic citizenship and the classification of “natural born’ status where would our country be. What a stupid and disloyal comment to make concerning those who honor their country by traveling where ever our country deems necessary. Yet you would not question Obama’s refusal to provide necessary documents to clear up any questions and could avoid a possible civil uprising which could result if he continues to refuse to prove once and for all he is who he claims to be.

Obama is at it again, another falsified document, which this time is the selective service registration form which he was required to file in 1980. (1) The DLN number which is only a 10 digit number on the Selective Service System Registration Form shows the “08” execution date but has been changed to become an 11-digit number on the computer printout allowing for the insertion of an “8” in front of the “08” becoming ‘808”. (2) An outdated 9-year old postal date stamp was used. (3) The “no ID” check off box was marked reflecting the individual that appeared before the Post Office Agent in Hawaii did not present any form of ID. It should be investigated which Post Office and which agent was involved in executing this form. There is no other decision to make other than they were bribed into creating this false document and they should be punished accordingly. (4) The SSS Reference No. assigned to Obama was not placed on the registration form as is the procedure and (5) There is doubt as to who actually signed the form
How many more lies will be discovered if we keep digging.

The Essence of our American Heritage Has Been Destroyed by Obama and Our Government
After the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, our government requested all citizens do their civic duty in being more observant and report any suspicious individuals, activities or any unaccompanied baggage or parcels.
However, when we ask our Supreme Court to do their civic duty by investigating an area of great concern whereby a political figure is committing fraud to secure the Presidential election under false pretentions, they not only refuse to become involved but state we as “ordinary citizens “ do not have the right to question Obama’s qualification or lack thereof. Conveniently passing the buck over to Congress stating they are the only ones that have the authority to impeach, knowing full well that the Democratic Congress would never take any action against Obama, since they themselves are also involved in the fraud.
I always thought any degree of criminal activity should be reported to and handled by our court system, especially when it involves a critical governmental individual. While the attempts to file suit in 9 states also fell on deaf ear by the court system, and our appeal to the Supreme Court likewise became a refusal to get involved, one should think how corrupt has our judicial branch become.
What harm would it have done to merely request the detailed documents outlined in our petition which could assure the safety and security of our country and stop the anger which is becoming pretty predominate throughout the internet by Obama’s refusal to submit these documents? The only conclusion I can reach is our entire government is aware of the fraud and is involved in the cover up since they don’t want the news to get out about Obama’s deception in circumventing our constitution, falsification of governmental documents, i.e. Presidential Certification stating he fully qualified for the position when he knew he was not, and the Selective Service Registration actually filed in 2008 but falsified to show 1980. His trips to Africa and Iraq illegally performing a function for which he was not yet appointed to! The list becomes so lengthy, I doubt if any other individual could have accomplished as much fraud in such a short period of time, yet our government opens up their arms and welcomes into their fold, an even more critical element, a potential terrorist. The Muslim radicals stating that they would find another way to destroy our country and in particular “would raise the flag at the White House”, this will be accomplished when Obama enters the White House after the inauguration. This should surely be a feather in their cap. They took an intelligent African Muslim indoctrinated him in the protocol favorable to Americans, the use of propaganda to influence the American vote, injected funding towards the new media to report one-sided commentary, disrupted our financial system as well as that of Europe by attempting to take down one of the very critical structures of our country with a mere tactic of delay convincing the political party it was the way to go until the initial impact could be felt, then provide him with top secret information about our country, outsmarting some of our most “so called political genius’s” without creating any question regarding his actual agenda, destruction of America.
The Department of Homeland Security was developed to provide more safety and security to the American people and our country yet they have not accomplished much in providing this added security since they to do not accept any responsibility to investigate the possibility of foreign infiltration by a black American/Muslim into a top level position in our government who has never received national security clearance. I am sure that will change since bribery can accomplish a lot, all of which Obama is willing to do to accomplish his ultimate goal of being our next President. While forgery can be accomplished, the more people involved the more susceptible he becomes to disclosure.
While everyone is relatively aware of the corruption that has existed in our government for a while, the magnitude of corruption prevalent now is unbelievable. It would be incorrect to say that bribery does not exist within the general public as well. Every time we provide or accept a gift for services performed or for consideration of favoring a specific product or organization, etc., we become involved in a form of bribery. It’s when that bribery becomes an issue affecting not just ourselves but a multitude of people manifesting itself to uncontrollable levels detrimental to our country.
I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that it took over 200+ years for the over saturation to take effect, thanks to the final nail placed in our coffin by Obama, with our government looking on in favor. I hope there will be enough concerned Americans, the true patriots of our country, still around that can be sure those coming after them are fully aware of the lack of integrity displayed by our political parties.
As George Washington once stated, the division into political parties could prove disastrous if not adequately controlled. He was so smart and I hope in the non to distant future our grand children will see that the 2008 political campaign will receive the discredit it deserves. Thanks to Obama, a majority of the Democratic Party and all the others involved, for they have destroyed the very essence of our American heritage and they should be labeled as traitors to their own country.
Is this the same tactic or over confidence that resulted in the 9/11 attack, never dreaming that their careless and smug attitude also attributed to the disaster by their deliberate refusal to address the issues when they first appeared and then brushed them off hoping they would just go away. Yet, they are doing the same thing now by refusing to even address our concerns which could divert a possible civil uprising instead their fear of an African American riot, their fear of the potential fallout from those of the Democratic Party involved, the monetary benefits resulting from the inaugural celebration and other influential’s banking on Obama’s victory, is given more precedence.
I thought our government consisted of intelligent individuals, but their intelligence flew out the window when the benefits to them outweighed the expense to their country. Our country is no better than any others that have sold out the freedoms of all their people in the name of power and greed.
I truly hope you are not also involved in the destruction of what was once called the most powerful nation in the world. Now we will end up being the stupidest country which was taken down by their own people with the help of the Muslim radical community.
