Steele Takes Party Chairmanship

ABC News’ Rick Klein and Teddy Davis Report: Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele was elected chairman of the Republican National Committee today, giving the GOP its first African-American leader as the party seeks to reframe its identity under the presidency of Barack Obama.

Steele won after five rounds of balloting, beating four other candidates who sought the chairmanship. He finished with 91 votes in the final round — six more than the threshold required to win election — compared with 77 for Katon Dawson, the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party.

“This is awesome,” Steele told RNC members after winning the two-year term. “It’s time for something completely different. . . . We’re going to bring this party to every corner, every boardroom, every neighborhood, every community. And we’re going to say to friend and foe alike, ‘We want you to be a part of us, we want you to work with us. And for those of you who are ready to obstruct, get ready to get knocked over.’ ”

The new RNC chairman faces the task of rebuilding a party that finds itself out of power on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Steele has strong conservative credentials on social and fiscal issues. But he was cast as a moderate in the chairman’s race because of his former service on the board of the Republican Leadership Council, a centrist group.

Unlike the state party chairmen who were running, he also has little experience building party infrastructure — an area of concern for many inside the GOP.

Diversity was on the minds of several RNC members, particularly after an election in which Republicans struggled to win the support of black and Hispanic voters.

“If the party is not prepared to go in that direction, you’re looking at a dinosaur. Whoever gets elected can’t look like me,” said Holland Redfield, the RNC committeeman from the US Virgin Islands, who is white. “The message has got to be not because we need their votes. It has got to be because it is the right thing to do.”

Steele built a following through extensive television news appearances, including a role as a commentator on the Fox News Channel. He gave a popular speech at the Republican National Convention last year, where his chants of “Drill, baby, drill” became something of a rallying cry.

Three other candidates — outgoing Chairman Mike Duncan, Michigan GOP chief Saul Anuzis, and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell — dropped out after disappointing showings in earlier rounds of balloting.

YES We NEED someone in there who will push Sarah Palin!!!! That’s the Dems best chance at keeping the Presidency in 2012!!!!!!!!!

That is good the RNC got rid of Duncan. Now
why is the GOP keeping Mitch McConnell as Senate leader and John Boehner as House leader after such sweeping Republican failures this past election cycle? What message does that send?
More of the same.?.

So how long before Rush claims that the Republicans voted for Steele because of white guilt? Is Steel the new magical Negro for the Republican party?

Posted by: gammaraygus | January 30, 2009, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

Just putting in a person of color will not drive millions of blacks and Hispanics to the party. It is their ideology that will cause the majority of these groups to never embrace them. You can’t change what is ingrained, and looking at people like Rush will just push people further. It will still be a party of old white men and ann Coulter, Rove and Limbaugh. So what has changed? In effect, NOTHING. Steele will just turn out to be a lackey of the above and nothing more. He wouldn’t be able to change what has been preordained. And as for those who have declared that they will never vote/support a black man, what do they have to say now that they have a black leader?

You have got to be kidding, how pathetic. Republicans just don’t get it, but they should. It’s not about color, it’s not about black or white. It’s about ” MONEY “, it’s about the working class against the rich elite. This B.S. is why I left the Republican Party.

I must admit I don’t know much about Mr. Steele but this doesn’t pass the smell test. It appears that they chose him as their token black man to give the appearance of inclusiveness. Do they think this is going to be their “Magic Negro”? I can see right thru this. Didn’t the RNC learn anything from picking Sarah Palin as the token woman?

The GOP is so lame, it isn’t funny anymore. Steele, and one other black guy, were THE ONLY BLACKS IN THE ROOM!!!
Ray Charles can see what the republicans are trying to do, and he’s blind and dead. I guess the blacks are just suppose to come running to the GOP now, huh?

Democrats should keep pushing the RNC towards Palin an Rush Limbo; The more they will be visible the better it is for the democratic party. Rush Limbo is disgusting but on the other hand you need very little to make him say or do things that can be used against the RNC on next elections; the will become the image of the RNC. In fact people like Guliany, Hannity or essential to the perpetuation of the democratic power.

This sums it up – Steele’s announcement on Hannity.
“I want the gig,” Steele said. “I’m ready to lead this party. I think we have been kind of wandering and doubting ourselves for far too long. I think this past election was the culmination of that self-doubt, which has to end.”
He made the announcement on Fox News’s “Hannity and Colmes” Thursday night. Host Sean Hannity threw his support to Steele during the show.

Posted by: Paige | January 30, 2009, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

Michael Steele believes in conservative principles, and has not yet been truely stigmatized as radical like Gingrich, Limbaugh, or demonized like Tom Delay by the live and let live non partisan, homofatuated liberal media.

Posted by: aiasha | January 30, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

What does he mean by “The message has got to be not because we need their votes. It has got to be because it is the right thing to do.” That comment just cheapened the entire selection of Steele.
Happy for Steele but disappointed in the the reasoning…

Congratulations, Michael Steele. He is very vocal about fiscal/moral conservatism, and seems like a smart guy, but I never thought that Republicans would actually take him seriously. I am really surprised that GOPers elected an african-american from MD to be the head of their party. Now let’s see if this is going to divide the GOP, alienate voters from the deep south and other “conservative” areas, or if it really sends a message of inclusive politics. This is good for all of us. I am a Democrat, I disagree with Steele’s political views, but I recognize that GOPers are sending a strong message to everybody, including their own constituency.

Posted by: Miguel | January 30, 2009, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

Nonsense. Just look at how putting Sarah Palin onto McCain’s ticket had women flocking to vote Republican!
The Republicans have always been good at putting their few highly skilled black members front and center, from Powell to Condi to this guy. They have just been abysmal at convincing their members to elect one – not a SINGLE black Republican member of Congress. Not one. (Democrats have dozens, about the percentage you’d expect based on the US population.)

Mike Steele is a great choice. MLK was a republican. The people on the on the right side of the Civil War were obviously the republicans, and the segreationists/klan members were all democrats.
Democrats only enjoyed the black vote after the 60′s free your mind-welfare for everyone-let your pants hang down mentality hit.
They realized entiltlements are the new way to keep people enslaved. Ever since the democrats have gotten the black vote, blacks quality of life in education, marriage, literacy, relative to whites has significantly dropped.
Show them the light Michael!

Steele’s been a strong Republican voice for the last two years. He put in a lot of hard work, and earned the admiration of many of us in the party.
It’s sad that people are using his victory to reinforce some lame, inaccurate GOP stereotype. He’s not a token black politician, and his victory doesn’t somehow divide the party.
Republicans want leaders who will lead and represent them effectively. It doesn’t matter what color their skin is.

But it may not in the end mean much, especially if the Republican Party remains frozen in its path of cultural wars, division and hate. Not long ago, it used Colin Powell as its poster child; but it rejected his broader and more inclusive vision. In the past, the Republican Party has appeared to be against so many progressive measures in American politics and the South, supposedly a “bible belt”, remained largely bigoted. Currently, it is staking a divisive stand through Congress against President Obama’s urgent steps to revive the economy. Therefore, we must ask: will Steele be used by the Pope. The evangelical movement and the Republican Party to wage another divisive cultural war in America, especially on the issues of abortion, immigration, poverty, stem cell research and race relations?

Steele has earned his keep. Obama has done nothing but make empty promises and live off the tax payers dime.

Posted by: congress | January 30, 2009, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

For all that are outraged about the racial comments I share you feelings but you really must realize that this is more than a stretch of the imagination that in a party that a fellow RNC nominee would classify Steele as one of those “Magic Negros”, that party would pick Steele become the RNC chair.
A party that is the antithesis of African American interests is now electing a African American as RNC.
Steele you should go and Thanks President Obama for making this possible for you before you start your Republican talking points.
I’m sure all would agree that the fact that we now have an African American president paved the way for this to happen – even an anti-minority party such as the GOP.

Posted by: justmyopinion12009 | January 30, 2009, 5:11 pm 5:11 pm

While I am never surprised by liberal ignorance and hatred, most of the comments here are bottom of the barrel. Obviously, those of you who believe he was chosen only because he is black need to research the facts as well as his resume. Oh wait, I forgot, liberals can’t argue facts so they argue with emotion. Check out his credentials before you pummel him for being chosen based on the color of his skin. He will take the Republican party in a winning direction.

Posted by: LatinaFemaleConservative | January 30, 2009, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm

jhw…you may be correct but i do believe this is a step in the right direction. there is no place for racism anymore. my 11 yr old came home during the election and asked if we were racist? i asked why? he said he was called a racist at school because he voted for mc cain in grade school voting. i want the republican party to ba all inclusive and focus on consertvative values. the religious right and the neo cons really highjacked the party. i am happy to see it make changes.

Isnt that nice. I wish the republican party would understand what is wrong with their party and why they lost the election. Is wasnt all about color except hate on their end. Listen to Hannidy if you want to know what is wrong with the party. He is a perfect example. To campaine constantly on fear, hate and to spend more time bashing the person you are running against, then spending time talking about yourself and what you can do is not going to win an election. Hannidy still talks about Ayers and such. Then Palin was another story. But what I am getting at is that this country doesnt want to hear about the past, about “hanging around with terrorist” and the fear of what will happen “if you dont vote for me.” The voting public doesnt want to see videos of 9/11 and campaining again on fear. They need and want to hear what a canidate can do for us in the future. They want to hear some hope when we live in a time where we are scared of of tomorrow might bring. The republican party attracts white hate groups and tobacco chewing rednecks because thats how they campaine. Sorry fellow country boys just making a point. Time to grow up Republicans and win me back to your side. Also quit making the Christian religion your one and only talking point.

Posted by: TruthSeekr | January 30, 2009, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

I had contratulated Michael Steele and the GOP on a previous comment, but after reading all the right-wingers comments about “white-guilt” and Obama’s election claim I decided to add a few points. Barack Obama became a strong candidate so fast within the Democratic party because of his views, because of how well he explained progressive views to other liberals, just like Hillary Clinton became a strong candidate in the Democratic party by pushing her populist message. A black man and a white woman admired by many democrats because of their merits, not because of skin color or gender tokenism. On the other hand, truth be told, Sarah Palin was chosen as a token woman, a response to Obama’s not picking Hillary for vp, and today’s election of Michael Steele to head the RNC, as stated by the same Republicans that are electing him, is a response to changing demographics in our country. That is tokenism. Both Steele and Palin are GOP tokens.

“Barry got elected with the media fawning over him and has never really done anything rather then play on white’s guilt for their past treatment of blacks.”
How did Obama play on white guilt? State a source please. Also, what has Steele ever “really done”? This is so laughable because now the same divisive racially tinged BS that the Republicans used during the election cycle are coming back to haunt them. Oh so Steele is one of “us” because he is a black Republican, but Obama is a magical Negro. So what type of Negro is Steele?

Posted by: gammaraygus | January 30, 2009, 5:28 pm 5:28 pm

Steele was the best of the worst. But Obama has the black vote. So the GOP will have to compete for Hispanics and Whites, to make a dent in the next election… Otherwise, even if Obama fails, they have NO chance!

An “anonymous” Republican complained profusely about the burden of being a Republican during Bush’s second term. Finally, the individual responsible for this comment to the Washington Post admitted to another news organization it was him.
Then he took it all back. Bush is his “homeboy,” he said during a radio interview one morning. Whereas before (when he was hidden under the lie of an anonymous “GOP Senate candidate” )he said that “to be honest,” he probably wouldn’t want Bush campaigning with him, now he says that “If the president wanted to come and help me in Maryland, he is more than welcome, because I’m not going to turn my back on a friend.”
Dave – Was Michael Steele being “patriotic” when he pulled that stunt a couple of years ago? I’m just checking.

Why Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican
By Frances Rice
It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S’s: Slavery, Secession, Segregation and now Socialism.

With that being said, why would you remain in a party who is constantly insulting the work you and other brave men/women have done throughout the years?
Gore, Kerry, Murtha, Mike Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Biden, BO’s pastor of 20 YEARS, michelle obama, the list goes on forever of democrats who blame America and our troops FOR EVERYTHING WRONG WITH THE WORLD?
I am still waiting for the headline:
AMERICA’S MILITARY, #1 CAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMIMG AND STARVING CONDITIONS IN ETHIOPIA.

The problem with the Republican Party now and forever, is their deep-seated ignorance. There are studies which definitively show that Democrats are smarter than Republicans. Look it up online!!! They will never overcome this. Their policies and ideals are are just plain unintelligent. George Bush is so dumb, it was embarrassing to watch him. I know this might be hard for republicans to understand, that’s why I suggest they look up the statistical analysis which shows that they are not as smart as democrats. In the 80′s the analysis showed that Republicans were smarter – but it has significantly changed in favor of the Democrats.

Good change for the GOP – Now if they will liberalize their platform they might be able to save their party from extinction

VOTERS: Songs to sing to the RNC as Steele comes on board: “What Have You Done for Me Lately?”, “Ain’t Nothing Going On But the Rent”, and the reggae favorite, “A Hungry Man is An Angry Man”. The CD coming out in 2009: “When It Comes to Money, the Only Color is Green”.
REPUBLICANS: Come up with an economic plan or suport Obama’s package. We don’t need distractions; and selecting Michael Steele as RNC chief, is a distraction. Remember: Ain’t Nothing Going On But the Rent. Put up or shut up!

Did the GOP elect Steele because they want to “bend over and touch their toes” because he has a “black father”, and he is the first black chair of the GOP? This man won’t be running nothing in the Republican Party, he is a token, and you bet Limbaugh will be behind the curtain. Steele should have not accepted this chair. He’s a Sarah Palin all over again. Will these jerks ever get it.

It is NOT his color people – just like it’s not Obama’s color – Steele has principles that he sticks by and is honorable. George Bush did more for Africans – not African Americans, just Africans than anyone else. So take that one. I served in the Army during WWII and know a few things. We have been safe under George Bush for over 7 years for which most people naively have already forgotten.

I sure hope this new guy continues the same ideas that the GOP has preached forever in history. They will continue to be easily defeated come election time. When a party is all blow and no show, it does not make any difference who is the chairman, it simply won’t sell anymore. If republicans ever expect to win again it will be because somebody in the democrats completely messes up, and turns the people off, sort of like Georgie boy did, not to mention our wonderful manipulator, and pocket filler, or ex-vice pres. If we can pull their rabbitt out of the hat, we will be hard to beat for a long time. I just hope they have not gone too far and made it immpossible.

Please give it a rest will you there is more to life and community then the military.

Vote for the candidate and not the party. I have the sinking feeling that Bush is ready to put in his next son and that would be the greatest disaster to America. The elite were worried so brought in a candidate to raise the hate and raise the division. We are divided again. We should unite as a nation of rainbows to end the class division.

They will surly be able to pick him out of the crowd in the next RNC convention. If you watched the last one the ratio any kind of color was almost non-existent. I would bet less than one half of one percent. Everything with the Repubs is based on calculated political ploy. The first credential they were looking for a in a VP candidate was female only second to radical religion so they could throw Hillary Clinton in the Dem’s faces and at the same time pull in the Christian wives club. It was obvious there were more qualified people in the Republican Party that would have been a much better pick. It’s pretty likely they deliberately looked for an African American first and qualifications second when it came to picking this guy. It’s not to say he is unqualified, I really don’t know. But history shows with the Repubs they are just tactless enough to use race over qualification in their decision making process.

Congratulations Mr. Steele, you can change the messenger but your actions are what counts! You that continue to shout socialist have forgotten already Bush started this bail out stuff! Or Bush vetoing Medicare negotiating directly with the pharmaceutical companies. We have a failing system (Social Security) funded by our tax dollars vs two huge private entities, pharmaceutical and insurance companies. Let’s see who would I vote for? Isn’t that corporate socialism? Seems to me this is no different just under some obscene justification. Or Bush sticking his nose where it does not belong in Oregon’s “Death with Dignity Act” till the Supreme Court told him to stay out their business, socialism? Or Bush creating more dysfunctional government, FEMA more socialism? Or Bush wanting to give 12 million (really 20 million) illegal’s US citizenship, socialism? Or Bush writing an executive order putting into place his controversial “faith-based” initiative and handing over $65 billion of your tax dollars. Bush apparently thinks he is much more capable to decide who you should donate to than yourself, socialism?

It drove the republicans crazy when they had to be under the leadership of one black man. Now they are under the leadership of two black men. They must be dry cleaning their white robes and getting those crosses ready to burn.

Good I’m a Democrat that support the Republicans voting in an African-American. They know what time it is and they had better get with the program. Maybe now they can come out of the closet and let people know what their party stands for. It had better be the middle class even if its the six figure middle class. The United States should be held together by the middle class that’s it. Everyone is not going to be rich and everybody is not going to be wealthy but with Education everybody can be middle class. That should be the goal and the way to balance America. Level the playing field by doing nothing to hamper people’s opportunity to become a part of the middle class upper or lower because a tool (Education) is the equalizer. From there its talent and hard work to get to the goal for every American.

You dems are just the most hateful ugly people around. You get to decide who is a token black and who is real..No one should be called Token anything. Especially when discussing people who have most likely achieved mountains more than the Whiners responding in this blog. IF there is going to be any change in this country there has got to be some respect for people. and I don’t care if we lost the bubba vote..if its just because they don’t like blacks. This blog blatantly shows why America is on its way down. All hateful rhetoric and no solutions. Killing millions of unborn children more than all wars combined and now funding abortions in other countries, and experimenting with embryos, human life. For the first time I am actually embarrassed to be an American.. And I know your token black remarks would even sadden President Obama and completely tarnishes the new “Camelot”. Keep it up Dems – there will be nothing worth living in the United States for in a very few number of years.

LMAO! You think the Republicans come out better with this?
African Americans are well represented in government, with Eric Holder in the Justice Department, Lisa Jackson in the Environmental Protection Agency, Ron Kirk as US Trade Representative and Susan Rice as Ambassador to the United Nations.
Beside cabinet-level positions, African-Americans will also take up key posts in the Obama administration, including Melody Barnes as director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Valerie Jarrett, a longtime friend from Chicago and transition team co-chair, as senior White House advisor.
Hispanics are represented in the Obama cabinet by Ken Salazar and Hilda Solis, respectively interior and labor secretaries.
Asian Americans Steve Chu will take the top spot in the Department of Energy and Eric Shinseki in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Regarding gender, Obama’s future cabinet will have five women, the same as Bill Clinton’s and just one woman more than outgoing President George W. Bush, who has four women cabinet members.
Nancy Pelosi, the first woman in history to head the Congress as the minority whip and now Speaker of the House.
btw – Colin Powell endorsed Obama.

I am an Inependent, who couldn’t wait for Bush to leave. I watched every news station, taping and carefully digesting what I saw. Mr. Steele is IMPRESSIVE. Michael Steele is the biggest fool on Earth. He doesn’t realize he’s being used. The GOP tried to placate women by trotting out Sarah Palin, when in all actuality her positions were 180 degrees from Hillary’s. Now, faced with daily reminders that they’re becoming an all-white, southern party…they trot out Michael Steele to be the GOP Barack Obama. He doesn’t realize he’s being played…he’s made several excuses for the “Grand Old White Party” many times. First, remember that state fund-raiser at the “all white” country club? Yeah, his excuse was “I don’t golf, so who cares?”. Second, remember those Oreos being hurled at the Maryland Gubernatorial debate? Oh, yeah, people were just having their snacks!!! What a fool!!! Wait til the Grand Olders get a look at the happy couple Michael and Andrea Steele with Michael Jr. and Drew. Oh, boy what joy!!! heads are gonna be exploding like popcorn in a microwave!!!

Gravy, I was beyond disillusioned and disheartened by Preident Bush and to this day cannot figure out he was elected. I served as a nurse during Viet Nam, I am an Independent who never took the Presidency seriously until Al Gore, in my opinion, stolen from him. I promised myself I would tape and watched every single “News” channel. I kept my promise and Mr. Steele was a commentator on a coupe of cable news shows. Sorry, he impressed me. I found him infored and thoughtful. He is a moderate and I believed him. Do any of us know these poiliticans? Its a “gut” thing, I coud be wrong but I believe the Republicans are finally headed in the “right direction”. I could care less about his “color” unlike many Democrats who seem to believe “color” is a criteria for being “qualified”. I support my President and want him to succeed. We won’t be considering another election for approximately two years, so why don’t we focus on how we can help our economy and world image.

Posted by: BruhMan | January 31, 2009, 12:08 am 12:08 am

I wonder how Sean Hannity will reconcile his support for Michael Steele with Hal from North Bergen?!?! This is going to be interesting…maybe I should drop a twenty on Intrade that Michael Steele will recuse himself from the duties as RNC chair due to “family issue” in about six months.

Posted by: BruhMan | January 31, 2009, 12:22 am 12:22 am

I just googled Michael Steele and still find him impressive. Do I agree with all his “beliefs” NO but he is well educated, experienced, and loyal to his party. What is all this snobbery about Sarah Palin? Personally, I believe a Steele/Palin ticket would be interesting and I believe the Republicans “know” they were wrong to support President Bush. They need to re-think their party and their appeal to Americans. After 8 years of George Bush, the Democrats could of halted campaigning, because, Americans were TERRIFIED the Republicans would continue with Bush policy. The reason President Obama got elected was he WAS NOT A WOMAN AND NOT A REPUBLICAN. His mantra of “change” was key of giving hope to a nation disillusioned. We elected a man with limited experience to rid our country of Republicans. I want President Obama to succeed, to fix the economy and our worldwide image. Do I believe things are going to magically be fixed? No, especially if our President wants a trillion dollars but we must come together for the sake of our country.

Why the inferences to Michael Steele’s wife?

Posted by: Deborah | January 31, 2009, 12:44 am 12:44 am

Paige: LMAO! You think the Republicans come out better with this?
The question was about which party places minorities in a position of power. The Bush cabinet was 50% people of color and women. Clinton had 52%. However, Bush is the first President to place a person of color in one of the top four cabinet posts.
Alberto Gonzales – Attorney. Gen.
Condoleeza Rice – Sec of State
Colin Powell – Sec. of State
Eric Holder is the only person of color ever given one of the most prestigious cabinet posts by a Democrat. This includes congress and the DNC. I’m surprised Obama did not improve on the Bush administration’s number. The real point to it all is demonstrating that Michael Steele is not a “token” appointment by Republicans.

Congratulations to Michael Steele on becoming the GOP leader. I am so glad you are a faithful Catholic Christian. President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have totally buried moral issues in the deepest ground with using Obama’s population. I wish and pray you can display a strong leadership unto GOP as well as DNC and Pelosi who is same Catholic, but support of killing unborn babies, breaking of God’s creations.

As black southern conservative democrat this pulls me more to the GOP because if my democrats were really concern with the future they cut I hate Bush crap because he isnt president he mess up a lot but not everything my fellow democrats act as is they had no part in the problem, hell they publicly mocked, called the former president everything but a child of god, so now that the shoe is on other foot my party has forgotten that if the would been the bigger person, they would have been to turn the GOP’ers on Bush but not in a mean spirited way and economy would have had soft landed and easy road for Obama to navigate but instead the did everything to make sure the former president failed and now his failures are the democrats failures cause Bush got his butt back to the ranch just in time for the real economic crisis starts. I gotten my black president and feel maybe its time for me to leave democratic party and seek to have my conservative voice heard because conservacrats dont have a “real” voice in the party anymore.

I am a Democrat who has watched Michael Steele a lot over the past two years, and I have been more than impressed by the man. Before you label him anything other than an accomplished, articulate, honorable man, read his history and watch him in action. He is special, and I commend the Republicans for choosing him.

Posted by: Babs | January 31, 2009, 2:53 am 2:53 am

@babs
Same goes for me democrats in TN have lost their way I would be open to maybe following where Mr. Steele will go because after voting for Obama in 2008, I also split my ticket voting Rep Wamp, Sen. Alexander, unless Harold
Ford comes back home and runs for something, I will also support my hometown Senator Corker for re-election in 2012 and I might try and throw my hat into the ring for the TN-3 when congressman Wamp leaves to become Governor.

Posted by: QT of Chattanooga | January 31, 2009, 2:59 am 2:59 am

They have made the switch to 21st century finally If I could meet the requirements to qualify for a run for congress I am willing to leave the democratic party behind and forge a new future I just believe deep down in my gut that I would never get my conservative voice heard by my own fellow dems, and if a GOP would be interested in listening to my ideas I think its time for this to understand just because youre black, hispanic, asian republican you labeled a sell out or uncle tom, or token black, this needs to end, ideology has wide spectrum just like rainbow and its time to stop demonizing people because they dont want to be like you and be themselves comfortable in their own skin.

Posted by: QT of Chattanooga | January 31, 2009, 3:10 am 3:10 am

Michael Steele is not a “token” anything, and neither is Sarah Palin. Both are accomplished people who have worked hard to get where they are today, and if more people would do their own research instead of just blindly believing everything the MSM spews forth, they would realize that to label either one as “token” reveals an ignorance that is just mind-boggling to me. I am a Democrat who recognizes the potential greatness in both Palin and Steele, and wonder if the constant belittling of both by the far left in my party isn’t an indication that they see the same.

Posted by: Babs | January 31, 2009, 3:25 am 3:25 am

I get it already, all I needed to hear was this new token of the RNC was not even a member of the RNC before they made him their chairman? Is this the needed change the GOP so deparately need? If they were going for transparency they got that with this pick, the voters see right through this BULL.

Grissom: That’s where your wrong. If Steele becomes a republican candidate for the presidency watch out Obama. He knows what Obama has not learned yet about politics and has been a governor. He also went to Harvard and no doubt can match Obama head to toe.

Babs: You are so right. The comments made about Palin and Steele are from people that have a lack of knowledge and will never accomplish the same goals even if they graduate college. Ignorance is a bliss and they have it. I wonder if their parent’s have accomplished anything in their lifetime. Palin and Steele both can throw rings around Obama when it comes to intelligence. They are both ten times more experienced in politics than he will ever be and Steele was a former governor. Obama chose the people from Clinton’s administration to give him an education on foreign policy and politics that he fails in. Rush don’t have to hope Obama fails, he is going to make costly blunders later. Rush knows his business and he is aware of what is going to happen. I will have the last laugh because I didn’t vote for him.

You liberal cynics can degrade Michael Steele as you do all blacks that are in the GOP. However, he is the REAL DEAL. Shack in you boots because the conservatives are organizing the base and when we do; YOU LOSE!

Is Steele going to be the New MAGIC NEGRO? You know like President Obama was. The Gop is Priceless First Palin They tried to Get Woman Hillary voters on Board now Steele, And we all know why Because we Elected our First Half black President! What the Gop fails to realize we did not Elect Barack Obama because of Color at Least I didnt, some Elected him because of his Policies,His Commonsense and His change Message meaning we have to TRY NEW THINGS DIFFERENTLY THEN THE LAST 8 YEARS AND THE GOP DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE REPUBLICANS JUST DONT GET IT!!

Posted by: Angie | January 31, 2009, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

I agree Angie, now what will Rush Limbaugh sing? Its funny how people who label themselves Republican or coservative accuse so called Dems and Libs of always pointing to race, but it is evident that they are doing just that.
There is no doubt that both the Democractic and Republican parties have had issues with race, and in particular blacks and hispanics in leadership roles.
However, in this case a straight faced argument can surely be made that the Dems put forth who they thought would be the best candidate against the Republicans.
If it were just an issue of racing the Republicans to the “who is the first party to stop oppression” game, then let me remind them that Hilary Clinton could be sitting as our first woman president, something that they had not seemed to even fathom until she lost the Democractic nomination to Obama.
Then Republicans insult the women in their party and angry feminist Dems with Sarah Palin who no doubt had some intelligence, but extreme ignorance as to both national and International issues so very pertinent to the Presidency and Vice Presidency.
If the GOP supporters do not perceive the nomination of Steele as just another gimmick then they are as naive as Governor’s whose foreign policy begins and ends with a view of Russia from Alaska.
John McCain failed, so now they are trying to put a black face on the same old rhetoric. Its like giving plastic surgery to Adolph Hitler, you may change his face, but his heart is still evil.

Posted by: Annie | January 31, 2009, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

I really dont know why the Republicans even try. When a black man is chosen by them he must be a “token”. A “genuine” black man must be a democrat? You either support advancement for people of all colors or you dont. The democrats are being the hipocrits. Dont make Steele’s color an issue. That would be racist. Assume he was chosen because he’s the best person for the job.

Posted by: zeke | January 31, 2009, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

The Republicans are back-peddling big time! They came up with a token woman for the general election to try to win over women’s votes of the Democrats and now they have selected a black man to head the RNC. Don’t they have any original ideas? Most people will see right through this. Republicans want African Americans in their party about as much as they want a bad case of poison ivy. If anyone watched even a small part of the Republican Convention, you’d be hard pressed to find a dark-skinned person there. The concept of a black person leading anything for the Republicans is so foreign to them it’s astounding. The have made this move to try to show Americans they want to include everyone now. Unless they talk the talk and walk the walk, this appointment of Steele will be seen just for what it is; a phoney attempt to try to convince all the people they never wanted part of their party, that they want them now. They need to do more than vote in a black man as their RNC chair to prove they are truly sincere and understand what main-stream Americans need. The Republican still don’t get it, just listen to Rush Limbaugh. He represents the Republican mindset so don’t be fooled by their selection of Steele; he’s just their window dressing for the minute.

Mary writes: You liberal cynics can degrade Michael Steele as you do all blacks that are in the GOP. However, he is the REAL DEAL. Shack in you boots because the conservatives are organizing the base and when we do; YOU LOSE!
Mary… “all blacks that are in the GOP”? You can probably count them on one hand. Steele’s main competitor in the RNC Chair race was a white man who only weeks ago belonged to a private country club that excluded black people. So tell us, just what ‘base’ are they reorganizing? The all-white one? The closest they get to being around a black person is when that black person is bagging their groceries at the store. Don’t try to convince us that Republicans’real reason they ‘allowed’ Steele to be the RNC chair was to show us all how inclusive they are of blacks and minorities. Just look at some video footage of McCain-Palin rallies during the general election. I’ll give you $10 for any black or hispanic person chanting in those crowds. They pulled Palin out of a hat to try to be slick and show people how much they value women (another joke)and Steele’s win is just another rabbit they pulled out of their hats. You don’t actually think they’d let him run for any high-level office, do you? Remember, you Republicans listen to Rush. He is the voice of the Republicans. How he thinks and speaks is no different than any other republican. They will tolerate Steele if he somehow can get them more votes, but that’s about it.

Posted by: sandra Johansen | January 31, 2009, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm

Anyone who has read Sarah Palin’s impressive resume knows that the left’s constant attacks on her as a “token” candidate are because they fear her and the overwhelming support she has garnered from conservative Republicans all over the country. Her credentials are real, based on her record in public service and her approval rating from the people she governs. Contrast that to Barack Obama’s lackluster career in public office and his elevation to the highest position in our land based on media adulation and constant refusal to judge him on his actions rather than the “inspiring” rhetoric that is after all, just words. Sarah Palin has walked the walk in both her personal and professional lives. Barack Obama talks the talk, and talks and talks and talks…… how many campaign promises will he have to break before you realize that his deeds belie his words at every turn?

I’m a member of the National Black Republican Assocation and just ran across this blog. I find many of the comments made by liberals here highly offensive and ignorant but hardly surprising. I’ve heard them most of my life.
With posters like Angie, Annie, and Sandra, I don’t even know where to begin. It’s clear their minds are poisoned by all sorts of preconceived notions and propaganda spoon-fed to them by the left. Their world views are extremely limited. I’ve found it’s usually a waste of time to present alternative views to people that are bitter like that, so I don’t even try anymore.
I deserted the Democratic Party long ago when I realized that its ideas were very destructive to black families. There are many black conservatives out there, and our numbers are growing, but up to now we’ve kept a relatively low profile. Michael Steele is well-known in our circles and is a smart, effective leader. I share his values and ideals, as do many black families. Best wishes to him and God bless. – JW

I’m a black conservative woman. Frankly, the comments here by Democrats regarding Michael Steele being a “Token Black” and “Uncle Tom” are highly offensive.
I have closely followed Michael Steele’s career since his appearance at the 2004 Republican Convention. Mr. Steele is highly intelligent, qualified, and articulate. He has worked long and hard to obtain the RNC Chairmanship and deserves it! That’s why he got it. In fact, there have been talks about him being the next chairman for a few years. It has nothing to do with tokenism or the RNC trying to trump Obama’s election as America’s first black president. Nothing!!
The negative comments on this board about Michael Steele’s nomination just illustrate the ignorance and prejudice of the commentators. Democrats always try to marginalize black conservatives as “Uncle Toms’” or “Token Blacks’”. Is it because we dare to engage in critical thought and refuse to think in lock-step with others? We refuse to play victim? We believe in personal responsibility? We believe that it’s not the government’s job to support us and our families?
To Marlene who posted, “racist behavior and their stance of intolerance.” Can you please provide examples this behavior? Are you saying that there are no racist white democrats?
“Black people are not going to flock to the GOP just because of Steele. We are not as stupid as you GOP believe we are.”
Are you sure Marlene? Blacks vote 90% democrat, collectively. The percentage implies that most who share our race aren’t capable of thinking for themselves as individuals. The presumption that you and all blacks think alike is proof of that!
That’s how I see it anyway.

Alexander the great didn’t get as far as he did by singing we are the world. I agree we should all hold hands and run free in the field of flowers but get real. Just as soon as you think we have peace and comfort reality kicks in the form of real conflict. Which has lasted for centuries and it is not going to “change” until mothernature says so we can pretend everythings OKAY and stick our head in the ground but real human nature will always overpower the weak, which seems to always be the peaceful. This is well above me as one human to another though assuming all wars are over and division is unified is asking for trouble.

I think everybody on here who spews the usual hatred towards anything republican (i truly cant beleive you can put Mr Steele down, he’s probably the most decent man you could find). Every republican is really happy with his nomination. We dont pray for black vote, we pray for a strong republican leadership, which we now have. Weep liberals, your hatred (as per usual) will do nothing to stop this party moving forward.

I just want to say this is why I don’t endorse either party. Bush showed that he and those republicans were bent on destroying the economy and sending the wealth to the top 1%. Democrats use race politics to gain suppose then bash the Republican for having a black man. The bash Steele and a magic negro or token or whatever without looking at his resume. First it went to so many ballots because Steele is a moderate. Second the man is well qualified. Third for all intents and purposes(coming from a black perspective) Mr. Steele is more black than Obama, he is descended from slaves and Mike Tyson is his ex brother in law(just saying). He grew up in DC in a “middle cass” family worked hard got scholarships and made something of himself. Now liberals pile on him because he believes in old republican hard work and try to tie him in with bush republican bail the rich. Give me a break who is really liberal? And yes I voted for Obama or really in part against Palin

it really seems not many of you really get the real picture here, it is not white black or hispanic, it is our values that got lost down the road somewhere. look at Mr. McCain very much in the center, that didn’t do it now did it? the problem is we need to stop looking for a class of people that are of a race or color, but look to attrack the people that love our Constitution and Bill of Rights and yes; freedom, with Obama we are loosing our freedoms and rights. this must be stopped, they are our servants, we are not theres. so we need to keep to our real core values, we are on the right side and we need to return. it will not be long before the people that voted for Obama wake up and realize he just robbed our whole country and none of the money will be spent to stimulate anything except the pockets of who Obama owes that bought him this white house, we need not to make this 850 billion dollar mistake, the liberals want to distroy our economy; this is the only way they can make bigger government, which is bigger problems for freedom, i am a NRA member and i am not going to let my servant tell me what i bought legal i can’t own, i say no, this country is the last free Nation on this planet, do you really want to be an other Cuba, or Russia? i don’t think you want to be slaves. so we conservatives must stay to the far right and vote the way we believe not vote to please others. i love my God and my guns and i am keeping them both, wake up everyone, we are loosing more than a party, America is loosing our freedoms just because of one election. i plan to push back and shrink government and give the power back to us the people. you must do so as well if you want to stay a free Nation. fight the good fight, remember this is the land of the FREE and home of the BRAVE. it is a government for the people by the people, we have rights and we must keep them no matter what some beauocrat tells you. email and call your reps and senators and make them stick to there promises, just like Obama promised to leave our 2nd amendment alone, well as you all can see, our first black president is a liar, not what you would want to have on your record of being the first, we need to remove every congress person and senator that we can in 2010, to even the power, then take the white house, by then i am sure with all Obama is doing the country is going to be very mad, because there will be no tax breaks for the so called middle class, they plan on taking everyones money yours included and what give us a 500 dollar check of our own money to do what with? please, the dems don’t know what the heck they are doing and must be removed. i tried to give Obama a chance; right up until he broke his promises to up hold the Constitution which should put him in jail, we he declared war on our unborn innocent children that was it, and then come to find out that we the people will pay for it, no i am sorry, chance gone and i pray he will be as well. join the NRA and stand with millions of Americans that want to keep our America free under the Constitution. be blessed and please wake up, this is not a joke. i miss president Reagan. his values and ideals will return, because they work.

I am almost 69 years old. I registered Republican in 1961 at the age of 21. Wanted to vote for JFK, but wasn’t old enough. Why did I register Republican….well my grandfather raised me in the hills and I loved him very very much. He was a Republican, and that is the only reason I did. I learned years and years later that he had been a member of the KKK and that was why he was a Republican. Have I changed my party, NO, but do I vote more and more like a Democrat…you betcha…..can’t help it…as Colin Powell said the other day…the party has got to change…is this electing Michael Steele change….I don’t think so…and he should be ashamed of himself for saying yesterday that he congratulated and was very proud of the Republicans in the House for handing President Obama a big round O in not voting for the stimulas…How Sad…yeah we sure are coming together aren’t we????

Putting a black face at the head of the Republican Party for minority votes is shameful. Now who’s exploiting white guilt? Is this not the same as McCain placing Palin in the VP spot to attract women voters? I’m just going to accept the fact that this party isn’t capable of doing what’s right by the American people. If you knew anything about Steele (which you obv. dont) then you’d know he’s a great republican, he’s on fox all the time as a political analyst and he knows his stuff. it was the best choice and a great choice for the GOP.
And Judy – it was the beloved Dems that started the KKK, and slavery. So now you know this will you go back to supporting your grassroots ?

@No Uncle Tom Here! America took a chance with Barack Obama, trusting in his abilities and his plans for our country. He was not put in place to rally minorities, but was put out on a limb to rally Americans. Most American’s said yes we can, and we did! Nevertheless, the GOP refuse to believe it. That’s why Mr. Steele is where he is today, and they’ve admitted it. They have admitted it! So listen to your party. You are simply a vote to keep them in power. This faux belief that Dems want the government to take care of people is a smoke-screen to advance the GOP political agenda. I’m a registered Dem and I’ve never expected or asked that the government do anything for me. And by the way, I’m black, I don’t know anyone personally who thinks that way. If the GOP were truly paying attention, President Obama has called for people to take responsibility for themselves, which is what most Dems believe as well. The plan is to put people to work. Key word: WORK. The GOP’s reasoning behind putting Steele at the forefront is indeed shameful. No matter how qualified he is. Sorry.

Posted by: Coherent1 | February 1, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

The times, they are a-changin’. Soon all races and ethnic groups will be minorities. There will be no majority group. The GOP can pander to its white fundamentalist base by yelling things like “illegal aliens,” and the Hispanics will just vote against them. The GOP can elected a fundamentalist Catholic chair who comes from a church that attacks gays and refuses to ordain women, and the gays and many women will just vote against them. The GOP can elected a chairman whose first speech is about how he pulled himself up by his own bootstraps implying it is their own fault that poor Blacks are poor, and a lot of Blacks will vote against them. Or they can elect a chairman who is a drill, baby, drill, and the environmentalists will vote against them. And most of all, the GOP can pander to the rich CEOs who are getting billions in bonuses, while millions of ordinary people are losing jobs, homes, health care and retirement, and a lot of ordinary people will vote against them. If the GOP is going to become an umbrella party, they are going to have to be more inclusive than they are now. And Steele doesn’t change that.

Coherent1 said: “This faux belief that Dems want the government to take care of people is a smoke-screen to advance the GOP political agenda.”
LOL. Democrats don’t want the government to take care of people. They want the government to ENSLAVE people in a never-ending cycle of dependency to ensure their power. Get to the inner cities much? Ever hear of multi-generational welfare? You can credit Democrats for that. Or are you going to tell us the welfare hell in Detroit was caused by Republicans?
“I’m black, I don’t know anyone personally who thinks that way.”
Of course you don’t. New York liberals don’t know anyone who voted for McCain either. So they must not exist.
“The GOP’s reasoning behind putting Steele at the forefront is indeed shameful.”
The GOP’s reasoning behind putting Steele in the forefront is that he’s a proven leader with conservative beliefs. Republicans love him because of his ideas, not his skin color. Democrats are the ones obsessed with skin color. And gender. And age. And social class. And sexual orientation. I think our last election proved that pretty clearly.

It’s all about diversity to the libs until diversity rises from the ranks of the conservatives. The conservatives are he party of individual responsibility and national security. The libs buy votes and condemn tradition. If the kind of dirt we’ve heard on Daschle, Geithner and Rangel had come out on Republicans, the Republicans would have disqualified these crooks themselves. That’s one distinguishable difference between the parties.

What is pathetic is how hateful you Libs are. You just can’t wait to say your nasty, negative comments. If any of you had a brain and actually knew what you were talking about, the man is very intelligent and a good choice. You people are zero tolerance and it is quite sad. You people are ones looking at people’s skin color.

A logical yet unredeeming selection. You can only imagine what chances Michael Steele would’ve had if it hadn’t been for Obama’s thwarting election win. The RNC must face facts. There is a reason why they call it the Grand Old Party. It’s because its usefulness to fulfill the many needs of the people have reached its peak. There is no more grandier political machine. The GOP is made up of old and weary ideology that do not take into account the full spectrum of the ever changing ethnic and diversive masses of the American landscape (something its founders negelected to surmise and accommodate). Unless it is truly sincere and honest about its core values and its objective for their version of Change in the near future (sooner then later) it will no doubt die a slow and repleted death. Good luck.

Not to outdone by the election of the nation’s first black president, the GOP hastily finds a token black man to head the RNC. Can everyone say “transparent motives”?

Most of you sound like a bunch of little kids pushing each other in the chest saying “mine is better then yours”.
Many of you pontificate about what you know nothing about. Get the facts and then carry on an intelligent conversation.
Our country is imploding and all you worry about is if yours is blacker than ours. How about worrying about the scandals that our congressman are involved in and they still are allowed to stay in office. How about the cheating to get someone in office. Our very democracy is at stake!
We are about to lose our sovereignty and all you can do is bicker about the trivia.

After researching Mr. Steele I found out he is against the Death Penalty! I’m 110% for the death penalty and so are most people that I talk with. Mr. Steele also supports affirmative action and when asked. “Q: Do you think the time for affirmative action is past?
A: Absolutely not. We’re just beginning to rediscover what we should be doing with affirmative action. Don’t look at our universities. We got that. Let’s look at our boardrooms, let’s look at the management structure.” So his answers are more government intervention and continue to mandate reverse discrimination. These are issues that I thought were important to Republican’s.

You know what it sadnned me as it sadnned many millions. Your heart knows it is all about money or individual popularity. But in anyway you take it, it nausited me. It is shame and it is a disgrase all about you when you sell your skin like that. If they do all this towards Obama think twice , three times and more times about your actions. It is a shame, but it is not late. Come out of this mess we still take you back.
