The Obamas and Bidens Attend the National Prayer Service
The Obamas and the Bidens attended the 56th National Prayer Service this morning at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.
The invitation-only service had strong undertones of the dire economic situation and America’s reputation abroad– and the hope that the new Obama administration can bring change and relief.
The Obamas and Bidens were seated in the front pew along with former President Bill Clinton and his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd of DC, in the opening remarks, joked that the best way for the new administration to begin their first day on the job is by praying.
The sermon featured the first ever sermon by a woman – Sharon W Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Announcing Mr. Obama directly, Watkins said that “Mr. President” had a nice ring to it yet – but “Madame First lady” may have a better ring. A rousing applause came throughout the cathedral from the guests.
Watkins outlined the great task that the new administration has before them and warned them of the affect of being swayed away from their original direction.
“What you are entering now, Mr. President and Mr. Vice President, will tend to draw you away from your ethical center,” Watkins said. “But we, the nation that you serve, need you to hold the ground of your deepest values, of our deepest values. Beyond this moment of high hopes, we need you to stay focused on our shared hopes, so that we can continue to hope, too. We will follow your lead."
Watkins used the story – she said was attributed to Cherokee wisdom – which said there are two wolves struggling inside each person– one filled with anger, resentment and self pity – and the other filled with compassion, faithfulness, and hope.
“We need you to feed the good wolf within you, to listen to the better angels of your nature, and by your example encourage us to do the same,” Watkins said speaking to the President and the VP.
Watkins said this administration especially has hard times to deal with – the economy and the nation’s standing in the world.
“Someone has to keep watch and be ready to defend, and Mr. President – Tag! You’re it!”
In a nod to the American tradition of religious tolerance and freedom, six different religious leaders led six different prayers – many praying for the safety of the President in his new leadership role.
President Obama sang along to the "Star Spangled Banner", a booming rendition of "Amazing Grace" and a variety of hymns. The Washington Performing Arts Society Children of Gospel Choir sang “He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands,” to which the new president sang along, smiling.

Way to make it all about you Rev. Watkins, even though you apparently mangled it .
And I agree that there should not be applause in a Church. Even if you dont want to have a prayerful attitude, you shouldn’t distract others who do.

Who sang Amazing Grace? I didn’t get a chance to hear it, but a friend said the man who sang was absolutely awesome.

You can learn a lot from Cherokee wisdom “two wolves struggling inside each person– one filled with anger, resentment and self pity – and the other filled with compassion, faithfulness, and hope.” Sounds like A LOT of people I know who unfortunately don’t choose the latter!

Applause in church is actually quite Biblical. It was thought to dispel bad spirits! So. It’s quite okay and acceptable though I know some people and denominations frown upon it. I think people are really trying to be appreciative when they offer applause, that’s what we do as a culture to thank good music a rousing sermon. And it’s as good as an AMEN! I believe.

marcus as you will read on here,
many of the poor people who are always writing negative stuff here
are always feeding the resentful, angry wolf. and now someone here has just revealed (and from what they always write, i am not suprised) they don’t realize people clap in church all the time. have been for at least 54 years.
but from what the “outlaw” always writes
it is no suprise she does not know what goes on in churches.

The Inaugural Prayer Service was absolutely a wonderful start to President Obama’s start in office. Beautiful music and a fantastic sermon. I am so glad I had the opportunity to watch and wish I could find the sermon to reread. It was appropriate for so very many of us. Why the critisism of applause in church. Why not rather critisism of those sitting there judging others and what they are wearing. Which wolf are they feeding?
