Caterpillar CEO Bulldozes Up a Load of Damage Control

After the Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar, Jim Owens, yesterday contradicted the president’s claim that he’d said passing the stimulus package would mean he would be able to re-hire workers from the 22,000 he just laid off (more on that HERE) today Caterpillar released this, er, clarifying statement.

"As I indicated yesterday, the President and I fundamentally agree that the U.S. stimulus package will be beneficial to the U.S. economy and should spur demand for the types of products made by Caterpillar," Owens says in the statement. "The passage of significant stimulus packages in the United States and abroad would help move the global economy toward a recovery, and if these packages are enacted quickly, they could stimulate demand for our products that would likely, over time, provide Caterpillar the opportunity to recall employees who have been laid off during this downturn.  We know this won’t happen overnight, but I am confident that swift passage of the stimulus will lay the important groundwork to rebuild our workforce."

It really is terrible when the truth accidentally slips out. Ron Paul always had this problem on the campaign trail and was ridiculed for it.

Am I wrong or is that basically what he said yesterday?

Cue GOP cheering that Bush drove economy so far in the ground that even 785 billion in stimulous won’t bring back jobs. IE, Gop forced cuts in stimpack that will cause fewer workers to get jobs. Congratulations!

BRAVO!
Hurray for Jake Tapper’s persistence in bringing “Caterpillar” questions to Darth Gibbs — and especially for the heartening news that Obama’s hokey showboat session moved Caterpillar workers to lobby their Congressman to OPPOSE, rather than to support, the Porkulus!

Posted by: Human Intelligence | February 13, 2009, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

OMG! 1:45PM Jake- *Rush Limbaugh* just complimented you on being a fair journalist, someone who seeks the truth no matter what party affiliation! Watch out Jake! The Obama supporters and Democrats are gonna be coming after you with their long knives now! Anyone complimented by Rush must suffer! (in liberal land)

Posted by: JD | February 13, 2009, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

MOst people, except those that read Tapper and Drudge, see what the CAT guy meant.
He is going to have to lay off some workers, but when the stimulus gets goign he sees that he might be able to hire some back.
I hope the 20% of ultra-conservatives who think that this is actually playing well in America come to their senses soon.

Posted by: Fox News LIght | February 13, 2009, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Did Obama think Caterpillar was going to re-hire most or all of 22,000 employees on just the promise of growth leading to orders?
There aren’t enough construction dollars in the porkulus to credit that.
Now maybe if govt employees drive backhoes and loaders around their offices instead of the new line of golf carts planned! ;)

More taxpayer money down the toliet, WHERE IS the “Change” in that!?!

Posted by: hmn... | February 13, 2009, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

The Republicans don’t care about America. Their only goal for the next 4 years is to try and destroy President Obama. And those of you using terms like “porkulus” and “Darth Gibbs”, do you realize how stupid you sound using those phrases?

Posted by: DJShay | February 13, 2009, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

And? What Jake”
“but I am confident that swift passage of the stimulus will lay the important groundwork to rebuild our workforce.”
“if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off.”
Two statements that look to say the same thing to me Jake.
What is your beef? Did use the same exact words?

Posted by: Thinking | February 13, 2009, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

These “Obama” organization guys — Gibbs, at the moment — are given to sort of slurring that Porkulus will
“save-r-create” varying numbers of MILLIONS of jobs.
Just as Gibbs started blablaing about police jobs, msnbc cut off the briefing, as the other networks had earlier.

Posted by: Human Intelligence | February 13, 2009, 2:10 pm 2:10 pm

@Pork: What? That doesn’t even make sense. I rest my case.

parsing words….anyone with common sense knows it’s going to take a while to dig ourselves out of this hole.
how many jobs has Bush and Rush Limbaugh created in 8 years?
how many jobs has Obama created in 3 weeks?
how bout some reality here

If you can’t make an argument without using phrases like “Porkulus”, “Nobama”, and “The Messiah”, then you have absolutely no credibility.

Posted by: DJShay | February 13, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

Mr. Obama embarrassed himself, AGAIN! He now qualifies for the GaffeMeister Award, currently held by Vice President Biden. It was gracious of the Caterpiller CEO to try and save Obama’s face but why are all the employees lobbying AGAINST the Porkulus Bill? Guess they don’t like CHANGE either!

obama gave hope to those layed off workers, this guy needs to research think and then speak, stimulas is to stimulate, not have us twiddling our thumbs for years, how many times obama are you going to look like the symbol of the dems

I am one person who will keep my job if stimulus is past. If not, doesn’t look so good. I know I am only one person, but I can only imagine with states getting money that it will save alot of state and local community jobs as well.

Posted by: whateverpeople | February 13, 2009, 2:15 pm 2:15 pm

“… lay the important groundwork to rebuild our workforce” …
… is make-nice weasel words — the same kind of publicity-speak “clarifying” we know so well from the “Obama” organization — which might possibly be intended to make The Puppet look a little less full of it, on the “re-hiring” of workers, than he deservedly DOES look.
We’d bet Mr. Owens, who signed the “clarifying” remarks, did not actually WRITE them. Maybe Gibbs did?

Posted by: Human Intelligence | February 13, 2009, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

OOOPS, meant passed. The point is, some jobs will be saved, others will be created. That is a fact and that is all that matters.

“*Rush Limbaugh* just complimented you on being a fair journalist, someone who seeks the truth no matter what party affiliation! Watch out Jake!”

In other words: ‘I’d love some of that stimulus bailout $$$ and I’m going to support you if that means I get it, but I’m still firing everybody — I’m pretty much expecting the U.S. economy to tank even more with this Spending bill — I gotta keep expenses low to survive. Simple as that.’
Just shows how immature and delusional Obama is about his Spending bill. It’s a big porky package of broken promises. Oh, but we love Obama so much that anything he want he should do — why even read the bill before voting on it.

“It was gracious of the Caterpiller CEO to try and save Obama’s face but why are all the employees lobbying AGAINST the Porkulus Bill?”
Maybe the Caterpillar people don’t like being talked down to while they’re being used as a backdrop for the “Obama” organization’s barn-storming baloney show.
Maybe the Caterpillar workers — employees and un-employees — don’t care for being patronized publicly, and purred at by a pretender who’s preening for the teevee cameras, trying to manipulate every crowd at His every appearance into “news” He can use …

Posted by: Human Intelligence | February 13, 2009, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm

Owens: they *could* stimulate demand for our products that *would likely*, *over time*, provide Caterpillar the *opportunity* to recall employees who have been laid off during this downturn.

Someone should ask Owens if the stimulus doesn’t pass, yet the economy turns around, will he hire back workers?
My guess is yes.
It is nice of him to help the President out of this hole, though.

The “Steal from Us Package” AKA “Stumulis Package” will do little but expand government dependence. It’s only the first step towards a more socialistic culture. Hopefully we can make gains in the house and the senate in 2010 and stop this fullishness!

The passing of this bill that can’t possibly be read in the amount of time given before the vote will give a lot of power to the government and money will be spent on pet projects – if that’s what the people want, then you obviously voted the right guy in. I for one want my representatives to be fully aware of what they are voting on and would hope they would eliminate wasteful spending. I don’t agree with the fact that the E-Verify was removed which would help prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants. They are illegal – hence, they shouldn’t be getting paid money that an American is losing out on.

All MAJOR reputable economic reports have stated that this bill WILL Lower output and is NOT a stimulus but a the largest spending bill ever in the world. The economy is in a downward spiral not because of Bush but because of Obama’s GLOOM and DOOM since he started campaigning. Obama is responsible for the current conditions. Typcially a recession is triggered by an economic sitution (subprime -both GOP & DEM controlled – but recently controlled by DEM starting in 2006). What turns a recession around are people perceptions. All Obama has said is it’s bad it’s really bad. It wasn’t that bad. At the end of 2008, 40% of USA companies had a good or better year than 2007. Where was that news? The media wanted Obama so bad they played Americans and we bought the stories and drank the Koolaid and stopped spending and buying. It’s not a simple problem now and Obama has really dug himself and us in one deep hole.

Well it is done. The bill passed the house without a single Republican vote.
I wonder how many of them will remember that when the economy starts to turn around?
The GOP days are numbered.
When you get your extended Unemployment check, remember who said it was Pork and voted against it.
When you get hired to build a bridge , repair a road, work on a school building, lay power lines etc. remember it was Pork and the GOP said no.

Posted by: Deb | February 13, 2009, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

As a huge Rush fan, I’d say we need to continue down our current path. Let’s continue to outsource Cat jobs to other countries with cheap labor while lowering the taxes and regulations on the top 5%. This will spur an endless cycle of prosperity. Trickle down works…deregulation works…do nothing works…2009 is evidence of all of this.

Anita:” I for one want my representatives to be fully aware of what they are voting on and would hope they would eliminate wasteful spending.”
If your representatives can’t deal with understanding the bill with the aid of their full staff in the week it has been available, you need a new representative. The changes in the conference committee can be easily reviewed by a competent legislator in a matter of hours (with useful sticky notes on implications and highlighting if their staff is any good at all).
This bill has been their full time job for 3 weeks, it’s not like it just dropped from the sky onto their desk.

Democrats are depending on people like you who can only see the surface of things so keep it up. When you are intelligent enough to examine what is underneath the hood it is a different picture.
Democrats run a great PR campaign and a lot of people simply don’t have a high enough IQ to comprehend the big picture. Democrats present everything as seperate issues and depend on the public not to be able to tie together these pieces into a whole.
I hope you like it when once the government starts examining your medical information you suddenly find your options are limited and the federal government starts deciding what treatments you can get.
As the government gets bigger and takes over more they will erode rights to “cut costs,” “help people,” etc. If you look at world history this happens in every government.
FYi much of the “powerful CEO” rhetoric from government officials isn’t out of goodwill to protect the people. Many of them don’t like “new money” or that america allows for private citizens to not be controlled. This will change.

The thing that bugs me about these people, is that they also like to imagine themselves *Patriots,* yet, all they want is for Pres Obama to fail. If Obama fails, the Country is in serious condition.

Now as evident by threads like these liberals have become simply caged parrots for their political masters. REAL liberals must be depressed at the gullible lemmings that define liberalism today.

face it, Owens doesn’t care. he doesn’t care if his company can’t hire back thousands of workers. he’ll do fine. if the stimulus works he probably won’t even hire them back. when the infrastructural aspects of the plan are implimented (like highway construction, works on bridges) he’ll hire some back. he just a republican and protected by republican interests. their only concern is that his tax cut is bigger than the average american’s.

Just a few short months ago a huge 700 billion dollar package was passed with bipartisan support. Big business and people with deep pockets benefited, no questions. Now that this 790 billion dollar package is being passed with no bipartisan support and a lot of bashing by the country dividers like RUSH and his buddy HANNITY, is it because no DEEP POCKETS are being filled up or truly because of a problem? To me smells and sounds too much of “PIGS AT THE TROUGH” syndrome – if I don’t get filled I am going to OINK like crazy.

Ahhh, I knew it was just a matter of time before someone would label the CEO as “racist”.

Until Caterpillar ends its contract with Satyam and starts hiring Americans, I couldn’t give a rats behind about their failure.

Congressional approval rating is around 15%. Reelection rating is around 75%. I’m not very smart, but how do these numbers add up. What all is hidden in this bill? We will soon know. What about Card Check, is it in this bill?

Most Cat employees who would have been in the same room with the Pres and CEO were hand picked… You can’t honestly believe that they would allow some Democrats in there would you?

thank god we’re seeing more and more how much these corrupt companies have relied on government handouts and negligence in order to keep American employees cheap and powerless.
Just today a right wing scary woman was on MSNBC saying that all of the employees of Caterpillar supported the stimulus bill. It was the crassest thing that I’ve ever heard because the CEO of Catterpillar said that if the stimulus bill passed, he would lay off employees. It was political sabotage number one because Obama was standing there in a Catterpillar factory, talking about all of the money the plan was giving businesses so that they could retain employees. They just could not care about their employees less, no matter how much money the government gives them to retain them.
If only Jerks like Catterpillar werent our only option for employment.
