Congrats to Danny Boyle

"Slumdog Millionaire" racked up the awards last night. A few weeks ago on the ABC News Shuffle Podcast we spoke with director Danny Boyle, who won an award of his own last night in Tinseltown, for Best Director.

You can listen to that Podcast on iTunes or HERE.  Warning: towards the end of the interview, though we do give you spoiler alerts, we discuss some plot points of the film. So if you have yet to see "Slumdog," be forewarned.

Slumdog Millionaire is a great movie and the improbable story of how it got to the Oscars would make a good film in and of itself. Congratulations Danny!

Fantastic movie. It is so wonderful to see how happy all the people associated with the film are.

“BTW Obama “auto” team only drives imports.”
Imports? Or do you mean some of them drive “foreign cars” manufactured in the US. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Hundai all have large manufacturing facilities here employing hundreds of thousands of people along with their their auto supply dealers.
Speaking of cars and actual relevance to Tapper’s post, I read Mercedes didn’t want their logo used in Slumdog due to the association with the slums and not luxury……

There’s rioting in India because those that lives in the slums understandably don’t like being referred to as slumdogs. The children who played the actor and actress were paid around 6,000 USD. That’s a far worse discrepancy than what customer service agents in India make in comparison to Americans. I’m just pointing out the difference between the real world and the one on celluloid. It may have been a great picture, but it was exploitative of the native population with its budgeting. It doesn’t look as though the millions it’s generated will go into any kind of charitable funding to help the country and its people.

Correction: Those that LIVE
BTW, micro loans and the Heifer projects have proven themselves in eradicating extreme poverty among individuals and the community in developing nations.

I acknowledge that the wages in India are not the same as in the US. India is not the US. It is dangerous to try and impose our economic standards on other nations. The US can do great harm to an economy by implementing our prevailing wages outside our borders.
It is interesting to me how many want to point out the virtues of other cultures until they come in conflict with out sensibilities. The slums of Mumbai are horrid…make no doubt about that. But if we can pay a moderate (by India’s standards) wage to those who man the phone banks isn’t it possible we can move more people out. Don’t you think the $6000 paid to those young actors can help those families mightily?
Congratulations to a great movie that had a captive storyline and the same time introducing millions in this country and others to what is going on in another country.

Congratulations to Danny Boyle and the whole cast!! SM is a Winner because it is a story of hope against all odds.
Danny did great: As an Indian, am very proud. India is a land of peaceful extremes: very very rich and very poor live in harmony. Yet the latter must be overcome, as India is silently working on. Am not worried over the negative incorrect stereotypes, which are bound to generate—because after all, if this is another step in what it takes to set new changes in dynamism- so be it.
I hope this story launches the forgotten ones of the world into the limelight as the wonderful spirits they are. Dev, Freida, Kids and the whole gang were great. Dev’s dynamism is the reflection of new energy that is India now. Freida’s beauty is a dazzling reflection that beauty comes in all shades, sizes and colors—the diverse heritage of India.
Thank you Danny and the Team for this masterpiece!! But it’s a masterpiece that is only a first step.

The parents and young actors have seen about 700 dollars so far. They’re also still living near each other in boxlike, ramshackle dwellings.

Danny Boyle is a great director. Those who rant on and on about “the poor” in the US should watch this film. America has treated it poor quite humanely, generously and respectfully.
A lot of the negative press chatter about the children was started by a rival (for the Oscar) production company.
Danny Boyle has done his best to look out for the children in the movie. His production company has set up trusts for them. Their lives will be better in the long run even if the film, maybe at first glance, appears to be somewhat exploitive of their situation.
I saw all the nominated films and Slumdog was a good choice for the Oscar. As much as I do not care for Sean Penn, I would not have been upset if Milk had been the winner. It was a well made film.
In general, I would have rather seen In Brugge, Doubt or even The Dark Knight nominated for best picture instead of Benjamin Buttons or The Reader but each to his or her own.

Danny Boyle should of ashamed of himself. This is exploitation.
Is no-one here aware that the kids are still living in poverty? One of the kids families had to spend the wages on medication. As for the ‘trust fund’ no details have been released regarding it, I wonder why.
This affirms one fact about the world for me. MONEY CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.

Congratulations to Danny Boyle and his crew for a well-deserved Oscar. The movie was wonderful, Frieda’s gorgeous, Dev’s adorable and the little kids were the best. Too bad the little ones weren’t nominated for something.
