First Lady: First Dog Arrives in April

ABC News’ Karen Travers and Yunji de Nies report: Vogue Magazine scored the first cover shoot with First Lady Michelle Obama. But PEOPLE magazine scores the scoop that many Americans have been waiting for – the Obama girls will get that promised White House dog in April, after the family takes a vacation for spring break.

First Lady Michelle Obama is on the cover of the PEOPLE Magazine that hits newsstands this Friday, her second magazine cover photo in a month. The First Lady dons one of her now signature sleeveless dresses for the story, titled “Our Life in the White House.”

Other tidbits the First Lady offers: She carries two Blackberries – one personal and one professional. The President is still struggling with quitting smoking. And like so many Americans, Mrs. Obama is not looking at her 401k right now.

But what about that soon to arrive First Dog?

A rescue Portuguese Water dog is still at the top of list, Mrs. Obama said, but one that is “old enough” and a “match” for the Obama family’s dynamic.

"Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good," the First Lady told People of the breed. "From the size perspective, they’re sort of middle of the road – it’s not small, but it’s not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that’s where we’re leaning."

Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy has two Water dogs of his own and has done some lobbying on the breed’s behalf.

The First Lady said the dog’s name is still under discussion after some peculiar choices from her daughters.

“Oh, the names are really bad. I don’t even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they’re bad," Mrs. Obama told PEOPLE. “You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn’t a moose? Moose. I’m like, no, come on, let’s work with the names a little bit.”

Mrs. Obama said she was surprised at how interested the American public has been in the search for the White House dog. “One of the things I didn’t anticipate is the level of the excitement about the dog. I knew my kids were excited. They’ve been excited for years. They’ve even calmed down, because they feel like, ‘They said we’re going to get one, so let’s just shut up about it.’”

If they find a rescue Portuguese Water dog, I will fall off my chair. Actually, my guess is a friend will place a PWD in rescue just as the Obamas are ready to adopt.

WOW! My life has meaning again…thank you, thank you, thank you! Can the dog teach BHO to keep his mouth shut? The market and I will send him a treat..Promis — and I’ll keep it unlike any of BHO’s promise in last night speech. :)

Why not just say that they are getting a Portuguese Water Dog from Ted Kennedy? They don’t need to bend to the will of shelter dog fanatics. There is a place for purebred dogs.

I’ll make a safe bet and say that you did say that everytime Bush went TO HIS HOME IN CRAWFORD. Why aren’t you saying the same about Obama now?

Posted by: jennifert7 | February 25, 2009, 10:17 am 10:17 am

Yeah, no vacations by God. The Obama team should work every damn day, 7 days per week. Christmas. Easter. Thanksgiving. Saturdays and Sundays. No time off, by God. Times are tough. They need to be burning the midnight oil. After all, look how hard Congress works?

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | February 25, 2009, 10:18 am 10:18 am

Obama went to HIS HOME state of HI at Christmas, remember? And we went for the long weekend when his kids were off, TO HIS HOME IN CHICAGO. Forget that, did you?

Reagan and Bush II took more time off than any other presidents. Look it up.

Before I go, I can’t help but add how the responses here remind me of a SNL skit done a couple of weeks or so back on the GOP brainstorming for attack angles. They concluded on going after Sasha and Malia.
The responses here are as equally petty and grasping at straws. There’s a conspiratorial attack mode against, of all things, a Portuguese Waterdog dog for the girls, which exceeds the imagination and detail of the SNL writers.

Posted by: kat the real one | February 25, 2009, 10:22 am 10:22 am

Anyone who criticizes ANY president from taking a vacation from the most stressful job in the world, is a moron.

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | February 25, 2009, 10:22 am 10:22 am

I don’t begrudge them their vacations. After all, the President is never really on vacation.
I just wish he’d stop scolding other people who spend money. President Obama is as much spending on the taxpayer’s dime as the bank executives.

Posted by: MayBee | February 25, 2009, 10:24 am 10:24 am

Two vacations inside of 6 months? Fine. Just don’t lecture me on how I need to sacrafice more. Obama said he was going to sacrafice a few things too. I don’t think he has any idea what some of us have done in order to live up to our financial obligations. I think we should all send him a list of things we’ve had to cut out……like vacations, and blackberries, and wearing extra clothing because we have to turn the thermostat down.

Posted by: jennifert7 | February 25, 2009, 10:25 am 10:25 am

In times of economic crisis vacations are something America cannot afford to pay for along with his continual campaigning flights all over America.
He also needs to keep his mouth shut, the markets are tanking over his bad news. He can no no more than Bush, except to put us further into debt.

You know, you’ve convinced me jennifert7. You are right. By God, he has not lived in HI for 20 years. He should be banned from going back there. Why should he? Just to visit his Grandmother’s grave? Bull! He can call someone there and have them deliver the flowers. And why should he go back to Chicago? His job is in the White House! He should stay there, chained to his desk.

Just let the Obama’s buy a Portuguese Water Dog or be given one from Teddy. They don’t need to politicize getting a dog. Michelle shouldn’t talk to People magazine about family matters. Personal family matters should be off limits.

Posted by: AKC | February 25, 2009, 10:38 am 10:38 am

With all the crap Obama has been dealing with from the previous administration mess and the crybaby republicans. I say he needs more vacations, like once a month to re-group & be fresh plus a a big bottle of Tequila Gold to boot.
The difference between Bush & Obama vacatons. Obama came to work right away (earned & deserves his private time) and Bush went on vacation right away (didn’t earn it & was vacant from the get). You can’t compare the two.

Posted by: spring | February 25, 2009, 10:38 am 10:38 am

Does not surprise me a bit, jennifert7. See what you can get going. By the way, maybe the Gov. should sell Camp David and make some money? Why do Presidents need a weekend retreat anyway?

The investors didn’t love the fact that existing home purchases fell by 5.3% last month. Since purchases were expected to rise, not fall during this period, investors are responding negatively to that news.
It’s funny that Republicans ridicule Obama as “messiah” and “the one,” but they seem to be the only ones delusional enough to believe that he and he alone has the power to make the markets rise and fall with each word that comes forth from his lips! LOL Riiight.

When you total the days, Bush spent 3 of his eight years either at camp David, in Texas, or at his family home in Maine. Everyone who is saying no vacation needs to shut up and pay attention to the fact that the president of the U.S. is virtually NEVER on vacation, even when he’s gone. Please phone Rush today and ask him to give away some Brittney Spears tickets, remind Rush that he’s just a deejay.

Posted by: CaffeineHat | February 25, 2009, 10:59 am 10:59 am

AKC…perhaps you didn’t take note of the “rescue” in front of Portuguese Water dog. Obama and his wife want the children to get a dog from the Humane Society because they want to save a dog not buy one or get one given to them.
As for discussing family matters…I’m 60 years old and every President or his wife has been covered in the media and asked about their family life and their pets. It helps to remind the American people they are people just like us…not royalty or dictators like they have in other countries that are set far above the “common” people.

Jennifart7: Why don’t we just get rid of the presidency then we don’t have to worry about him taking a vacation which Bush did every week not only that people saying he is spending money you idiots he is the president of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA do you want him to live in a shack come on think of better things to talk about then why the president is taking a vacation. Why don’t you talk about all the CEO”S that have big expensive parties after we bail them out or the vacations there taking on our money. Grow up people and realize the president deserves a little break once in a while not like BUSH all the time. Well…you could always consider going back to school and getting a better education so that you can get a better job that will allow you to save and pay for those blackberries. Thats how most people do it.
Don’t forget both of the Obamas worked their way through college and had to pay student loans off for the thousands they couldn’t earn after they were done. It takes a ton of money to become a lawyer and they are lawyers times 2 attending very prestigious colleges.
Heck, I went to a middle of the road college for my nursing degree and it cost me $25,000 in loans because although I was working full-time while I was studying, that only paid for my living expenses (rent, food, car etc).
I’m sure they were no different because they didn’t come from a oil rich family like our former president.

Michelle looked fabulous last night. She always looks like a lady and does it on a reasonable budget. She is physically fit and more power to her if she doesn’t have flabby arms she has got to try and hide. You forget Jackie Kennedy wore sleeveless dresses as well because she looked good in them. What would you have her wear? Sack cloth and ashes?

Does it really matter what type of dog they get?? Really?? Do I really care if they get a shelter dog or from a breeder? Good for the dog – I am sure it will get alot of attention. And as far as at what Mrs. Obama wears do we really care about that either? This country has alot more to worry about than how she dresses, what dog they will get and how many vacations they go on! I think the Obama haters are out in force and they have nothing better to do than bash them for stupid things like this. After this campaign this family deserves a vacation and with the mess he inherited he may need a vaction to regroup. He is responsible for an entire nation and by the looks of these posts alot of people would rather see him fail than achieve. Shame on you fellow Americans!! Let’s worry about the real issues!!!

Student loan interest is not itemized. It’s a for AGI deduction, meaning that regardless of whether of not you itemize, you can still deduct the student loan interest.

“Reagan and Bush II took more time off than any other presidents. Look it up.”
They also did four times the amount of work that Obama does in a day, and both could boast the military might and the robust economies to prove it. Well, Bush II had the robust economy until the Democrats took over Congress in ’06. We all know what has happened since then.
My point is, Obama has done nothing but continue giving campaign speeches since he was propelled into the White House by a media tongue-bath and a stupefyingly naive American public. I say “propelled” because he didn’t actually “earn” the position – or anything else in his life, for that matter.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: Why has he taken so many vacations? He hasn’t DONE anything! He’s enjoying all the perks of office, has given enough empty speeches to choke a horse and is having his posse to do all the work for him. And he needs a vacation from…… WHAT?!

I never realized how many petty, small minded, and just plain silly people there are who waste time chipping away at our President, his family, and when he takes time off to recharge his batteries, or what kind of dog the family chooses. Why he ever wanted this job, knowing he would be subjected to a barrage of criticism on trivia, much less on real ideas, I will never know, but I am glad he chose to do so. I look forward to watching the critics go down in flames when things start working again.

Some of you are sooooo……….stupid.
Whatever blackberry they have, or how many, or vacations they take from the White House, the Obamas have worked for it. Better than been born with a “silver foot” oops “silver spoon” in your mouth! It sure wasn’t given to them, not their money and certainly not his election.

Posted by: sngeorgia | February 25, 2009, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

I think people are really insensitive. The dog is for the girls, they always wanted one, so leave it at that! As for the Presidents address to the congress. I give it two thumbs up. I know those GOP people will never find anything good to see in it, so too bad for them. If they hurry up Anne Coulter and Rush are on go listen to them. But this is about the dog. I agree that a Portuguese Water dog is a great selection. Very docile, yet not a yellow lab that sleeps all day.

Tom Brokaw was right. President Obama and his staff (females included) and all visitors to the Oval Office should always wear a professional suit to show respect for the Office. It’s time for Obama to exit campaign mode and enter Presidential mode. There is a difference. He does not yet appear to understand that. His lack of experience is showing, he’s never really done any real governing, he’s been in perpetual campaign mode for years, hopping from one office to another. The media continues to carry the water for this man they put into office.

My interest is really simple – if they make a promise to their own child and they take forever to honor that promise — what are they going to do and how long will it take for them to honor / deliver the promises they keep making to my child — the pursuit of happiness reaches all levels. If the girls have stopped asking about their puppy then maybe, just maybe they know their own parents better that we do. Don’t look for it untill you actually see it.

Student loan interest is a deduction for AGI (see page 1, line 33 of the 1040), not an “itemized deduction” (see page 2, Line 40 of the 1040) as you misstated. Further, the student loan interest deduction is phased out as your income increases. If the Obama’s joint income exceeded $145,000, they would not be able to claim any student interest deduction on their return. Considering the First Lady was working as a lawyer straight out of school, their joint income likely exceeded this threshold.
Sorry, try another conspiracy theory.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
To set the record straight, there is a big question about the “student loans we struggled to pay off”. The loan interest wasn’t ever listed on their itemized tax deductions . There’s no documentation available to validate the Obamas actually paid the student loans off themselves.

I:
The President and Mrs. Obama are considerably more articulate than the average American, in part because they are considerably better educated. In comparison with George W. Bush, the President sounds like Demosthenes.
Moreover, you are evidently unfamiliar with fashion. The trend is towards non-seasonal dressing, so that women can get more wear out of their clothes. Mrs. Obama may be photographed indoors in sleeveless dresses, but outdoors she layers jackets and sweaters over them. As for whether the President should wear a suit jacket at all times while in the Oval Office, that would be foolish and impractical. It does not demean the office for the President to take off his jacket, roll up his sleeves, and get to work — quite the contrary.
Those of you who are complaining about this “trivial” story need to recognize that the media are businesses. They must offer a mix of serious news/opinion pieces and lighthearted “lifestyle” stories, in order to address a variety of tastes and interests. If you don’t like the latter, you needn’t read them.

They’re taking more time to decide on the dog than Obama is on our economy….that’s scary….yes he’s initially working hard, who doesn’t when their new on the job? Time will tell, I’m just sad getting a dog takes more discresion than his “people”…..

Who Cares!!?? Obama’s driving our ecomomy into the gutter and the press is talking to them about a dog? They’ll be the only ones who can afford a dog soon.

No wonder Obama can’t cloud his head with any details regarding the bailout and the dreadful ecomony. He still hasn’t been able to make this simple decision. You got what you asked for people. Now we’re paying for it.

I now know why the stimulus bill was passed. The note left on Mr. Obamas desk had to have read (President Obama DO NOT SIGN THIS BILL) But the dog is potty training and must have crapped on the word NOT and he read (DO SIGN THIS BILL). Make the world to me??!!

Chill out, everyone. The Obama girls have understood since Election Day that the dog would come after the family was reasonably settled into the White House. Around springtime of 2009. These girls know the meaning of the word “spring.”

Posted by: rmbrown0926 | February 25, 2009, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

Isn’t this a story about the first lady and her answers to a lifestyle reporter’s question on the choice of family dog? Pretty standard puff piece, no need to get your knickers in a twist. Maybe if Malia and Sascha tried to use fake IDs to go drinking in Austin like the Bush twins–that would be a story.

Posted by: BobBarker | February 25, 2009, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

Yeah—that’s a lot of hate about a mom and two little girls choosing the family dog. These same conservatives would still be angry if Michelle was doing anything more controversial than this. This woman is just doing First Lady stuff.

To “This is News?” 3:04:12 PM….Cast your mind back…remember the 8 years of Wall Street deregulation and job outsourcing? 8 years of Republican tax cuts that barely created 5 Million jobs? The massive off-budget spending for two wars? How is that Obama’s fault? YOU who voted for Bush “got what you asked for”, and “now we’re paying for it”.

For those who seem to take offense to this type of story, the First Family does have children, and not every story is going to be political in nature. As for the time spent selecting the best dog, I think that is wise. First, it ws necessary to find a dog that was as hyperalergenic as was possible, and secondly, given the ages of the children, the size of the dog was also important. You just don’t go out and pick out a dog. Responsible ownership dictates that you do your research. I wish more people did that–maybe we would have fewer dogs either running around as strays or living in shelters if people wanting that “perfect” pet did a better job of researching which dog is best suited for their lifestyle. And while I am on that topic, it would not also hurt for folks to be more responsible owners once they get their dogs. I hope that the First Family takes the time to teach the dog good behaviors. A well-behaved dog is appreciated by others who come into contact with it. AS a guide dog users, I can’t count how many times my guide dog has been interfered with by uncontrolled pets. So, let us not only hope that the First Family selects teh best dog possible, but that they also demonstrate good pet ownership.

I certainly hope his new dog is going to be a rescue from an animal shelter.

We have one. He’s amazingly funny and energetic. But watch out. He’s a master of mischief and thievery. Pillows, shoes, the walls, the doors, clothes, socks, paper, mail, checks – I don’t recommend anything important be left in the reach of the pup!

Did I not read sometime ago when the Obama’s first considered looking for a dog that they would look to animal shelters for their dog? Did they not find the perfect ‘fit’ at the many animal shelters and have to spend tax dollars on a full breed?

Eleonora27,
It doesn’t take much to impress you. The Obamas are not as articulate as you would like to believe unless they are attacking someone. Which says a lot about them as people…but nevermind….that is the game of politics.
However, any kind of policy discussion which requires a wonk, which is also the game of politics.
Both Obamas are incapable of delivering any details or substance….for years now.
As far as the sleeveless dresses. Remember the quote that Obama could grow orchids it was so hot.
I suspect Michelle is following the mantra. ‘Never let them see you sweat.’ Trying to keep cool from the hot house temps that Obama likes.
But if you need to, you can keep thinking that the woman who is required to have a large wardrobe as the First Lady. Is concerned with getting more uses out of her clothes….lol.
You should utilize Occam’s Razor, instead of insulting people’s intelligence and then offering faulty logic. ;)

Labradoodle! They are so beautiful! The Portuguese Water Dog is too wild!
But as long as it’s not a “little yappy dog” – the Pres will be happy!
And I’m sure the girls would love it!

What’s with the sleevless dresses????

BlofeldBuildings, so how many vacations has President Obama taken since he was sworn in as President. I know of only one, but in this same time period after Bush was sworn in, he had been to his dads place in Maine and back to his ranch for two weeks. I do not count weekends at Camp David as vacations for any President, that is part of the White House to me. I can’t believe some of you, I really can’t, this poor guy has only been in office a little over 30 days and he has done more for the average American the Dubya did in eight years. It kind of reminds me “Damn if you do and Damn if you don’t” mentality in many of you. Even if McCain has won, I would have at least given him a chance before I started critizing him and remember The First Lady was not elected to this office, so why criitize her, I think she is doing a fantastic job, at least the first thing her and the President did was reopen the White House to the public again for tours. It had been closed since 9/11 unless you were invited. (at least that is what I heard)

Caligirl, sweetie: you need to grow up and stop sweating the minor things. Why anyone cares enough about clothes and dogs to complain so vociferously is beyond me. There are plenty of substantive, intelligent issues on which to focus. However, some people can’t manage to move beyond the trivial.

Posted by: Eleonora27 | February 25, 2009, 7:17 pm 7:17 pm

How many of you did not see the word “rescue” before Portuguese Water Dog??? That means a shelter pup, folks. They are NOT intending to buy a pedigreed dog. Not to mention, you can find pure-breds at shelters. Mickey Rourke has dogs that look like pure breds, and they all came from shelters. And Caligirl– if you think that the Obamas are anything less than ultra articulate, that I’m not sure you understand the definition of the word. They are extraordinarily articulate.

Posted by: Rachel | February 25, 2009, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm

Eleonora27,
If you notice, MY biggest complaint was their lack of policy knowledge in response to your belief they are articulate.
It is you who seemed compelled to insult people over her clothes and now the dog.
If you would like to debate the finer details of politics concerning the Obamas or others. Then offer something to debate.
However, don’t confuse staying on topic of YOUR insulting response to “I”, with my vast interest in politics.
In fact, “I” post was about the respect for the Oval Office and his experience, is infinately more substantial than trying to support fashion trends for the Obamas in a post. Though this is a trival thread so I guess that escaped you.

typo…infinitely

Posted by: Caligirl | February 25, 2009, 10:56 pm 10:56 pm

Rachel,
Try listening to what they actually say, instead of how they make you feel while reading their teleprompters.
Neither Obama can speak extemporaneously on subjects they should have at least the basic grasp of the details by now. Especially, considering how long they have been in politics.
When they spoke on the campaign trail and now in DC, there are still caveats large enough to drive a bus through. That type of rhetoric needs to go and real policy needs to be discussed during these difficult times.
Now, if you need to believe that they are articulate. Then great. You are easily impressed as well.
Reading a teleprompter better than Bush doesn’t qualify as ‘ultra articulate’.
It is just better reading skills…lol

wow – that is really surprising. I was all about the Labradoodle – guess I just lost $20. I had to do a little more research on why they picked the PWD, and found an OK description of it: It seems like a good choice the more I think about it, wish I had my $20 back though.

“after the family takes a vacation for spring break.”
Nice to see that they have their priorities in order. Rome burns and the messiah fiddles. This bum makes Ike look like a workaholic! Can you imagine the media if Bush had spent as much time loafing as M T Suit?

Posted by: AUHOH | February 26, 2009, 5:21 am 5:21 am

It amazes me, that most of you crazed people sit and read about the Obama’s then write your nasty, stupid comments. If you don’t want to know, or you don’t like, then don’t read. Don’t you have jobs or a life, or is it that you don’t want anyone else to have a life. Is life so miserable that you sit and think up reasons to complain or is it the fact that an African-american family now resides in the White house. Everyone of you except the American Indian are Immigrants. You don’t have a priority on being citizens. The fact that the president’s ancestors were brought to this country in CHAINS, and against their will seems to escape your understanding. One would think that the white bigots of America had some injustice done to them or that they have reason to complain. I say bigots because, millions of marvelous white Americans support our president. The rest of you should find out where you came from and go back and let the rest of us Americans who support one another have some peace without your nonsense.

Well, Caligirl, I now wonder if you understand the definition of “extemporaneous”. Truly. Have you ever seen either one of the Obamas interviewed? They both can expound extemporaneously at the drop of a hat. They are both extremely educated and knowledgable. But you know what? You’ve shown your hand. You hate them. Pure and simple. No matter what, you’re going to find something awful to say about them.

Posted by: Rachel | February 26, 2009, 9:14 am 9:14 am

Some of the questions that will be raised about the First Dog are serious. The ways in which the Obamas deal with the following issues are sure to send important messages about responsible care to those homes that already contain America’s 60 million dogs.
* Considering the pet food debacle, what will the First Dog eat? Organic pet food? Wheat and corn-free? Vegetarian? What brands?
* Will the snow and ice-melting products used on the White House sidewalks be pet-safe?
* Does everybody know not to use cocoa mulch on the Rose Garden?
* Who is in charge of patrolling the premises so plants and foods that are toxic to dogs – grapes, raisons, chocolate, onions, artificially sweetened products — aren’t at drooling-mouth level?
* Where will the Obama dog sleep at night? In the bedroom with the children or in a crate somewhere else? Will it be the right size crate?
* Are the Obamas using biodegradable poop bags? It might sound like a funny question but savvy environmentalists will want to know.
Then, there will be fodder for comedians and national news segments:
* Who will train the most famous dog in the world not to bite reporters or will that lesson be discreetly skipped?
* Will the dog have a Secret Service code name? What should it be?
* Will the dog sport a diamond-studded collar and sleep on a $500 dollar doggie bed as befits its celebrity status?
* When the Obama children have sleepovers, will friends bring their canines for doggie night out?
* What famous person or figure from history will the dog dress as for Halloween?
* Who will be the official White House doggie photographer?
* Which dog toys will grace the gleaming and carpeted floors and new playground?
* Does the dog’s name have ethnic or historical origins? Does it more creatively top previous First Dog names such as Spot, Buddy, Millie, Lucky, Grits, Liberty, Checkers, Him and Her, Feller, Heidi, Duke, Pushinka, and King Tut?
