First Lady Visits Community Health Clinic
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies Reports:
First Lady Michelle Obama took her "listening tour" outside of the federal realm today, with a visit to Mary’s Center, a community health clinic. Mary’s Center provides pre and postnatal health care, social service case management, home visitation, health care for teens, early childhood and family education, and HIV testing and prevention. Mrs. Obama spent about an hour at the facility in Washington’s Adam’s Morgan neighborhood, meeting with staff, patients and children in the after-school programs.
She read a book to a group of young children, one of whom asked the First Lady where her husband was, and if he does in fact live with her.
"Yes, he lives with me really," she said, "He just went on a trip today but I will tell him you asked about him."
The President spent his day in Fort Myers, Florida, holding a town hall meeting with local residents, as part of his larger push to sell the economic stimulus package.
Mrs. Obama later met with a group of teenagers. She told them she came to meet with them because she and the President want to get to know the community. " We’ve been visitors but now we live here," the First Lady said, "D.C. is our community now and it’s our home. Barack is real busy right now so I figured I’ve got the time on my hands and while the kids are in school, I figured I would come out and hear about programs and meet students."
Mrs. Obama also spoke about her own middle class upbringing, saying she believes it’s important for young people without resources to get to know her.
"Not the First Lady but to see that there is no magic to me sitting here," she explained, "There is no magic dust that was sprinkled on my head or Barack’s head. We were kids much like you who figured out one day that our fate was in our own hands."
Tomorrow Mrs. Obama will attend a panel discussion at Howard University focusing on Black History Month.

Every time the press doesn’t look good, the Obamas go slumming — separately or together — in media events featuring down-scale school children and/or (as Obama’s stage-shows in Indiana and Florida) with “the people”.
What’s that ABOUT, exactly? And how long will it take “the people” to figure it out and turn on them?

Good for the First lady , Iam happy we have young vital people in the Whitehouse, Who can go out and be visible and make a difference.
Unlike the previous President who was too good to mix and hang with REGULAR FOLKS.. and was pretty much invisble! No wonder no one care for them.
Thats why the people luv our current President.

What the Obama duo are doing is just what they say “Getting to know the area and neighborhood”. My dad was in the ministry and this is what we did when we moved to a new area, we got out and met the “folks”, all of them, not just the ones who went to my dad’s church.
Making differences is getting out and actually making differences in people’s lives who have thought way too long they didn’t matter. After having worked in Washington DC, and lived in the area, we need the Obamas to help these citizens, businesses (large and small), families, health care facilities, education institutions, sports, gym work out centers realize they do matter.
Keep up the great work and momentum in giving us Americans kindness, caring, and helping us get back on our feet to do our best work yet in making America great again.

I’m glad that Michelle is showing an interest in meeting with regular people. It is such a good thing to tell the kids to see her and her husband as regular folk too. Their ‘magic’ was a lot of hard work, education and a strong belief in themselves.

It looks like the First Lady is spreading her inspiration in the places where it’s most needed. She’s standing tall both in her height and aim.

After all the praise on this blog for Michelle I knew the dissent was coming.America knows these two came from humble beginnings and they with the aid and imput of strong families were able to make something of them selves. Barack was a community organizer.Michelle worked at a hospital in administration.Wouldn’t it be normal for them to want to reach out to the underpriveleged.I get it. Some of you people find it hard to beleive that we actually have a decent first lady and president in the white house. You have to find fault in something they do.You will find fault, but only because they are human like you.The good news is they have decent qualities as well . Do you?

Wow, how much did this little outing cost us??? That’s ridiculous! #1 she stayed in the area #2She deserves to get out as much as anyone else, jsut because she is first lady does not mean she should be confined and cloistered #3 the Bush administration have over 1/3 of the bailout money to executives who DEFINATLY DO NOT need it while Mrs. Obama just went on a small excursion into her neighborhood and #4 what would happen if she never left the White House? If the PEOPLE were never able to get in touch with her? What would be the point of democracy?
Emily, you really need to view the world less pessimisticly! Brighten up, try saying, today will be a beautiful day…
