GOP lawmakers go citizen journalist and the handwritten stimulus

ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports: Congressman Tom Price, who chairs the Republican Study Committee, has been taking his anti-stimulus message to the people with shaky videos posted to YouTube. Earlier in the week, when closed-door negotiations between House and Senate Democrats and the White House were ongoing in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, Price had a staffer shoot him in front of Pelosi’s door, complaining that Republicans were being cut out of the negotiations. The production quality is not so good, but in this case it pays to be a congressman. Mere media cameras cannot shoot outside the door to Speaker Pelosi’s office. Today, as both houses of Congress prepare to vote, Price has a new video looking at the bill, which was finally made public late last night. He’s got the 1,000+ pages stacked on the office in front of him and points to handwritten notes in the columns. "It’s now 9 a.m. on Friday morning," says Price in the video, apparently shot in his Capitol Hill office. "Here it is – the non-stimulus bill, over 1,000 pages. It was made available at 11 o’clock last night." "Remarkable activity," says Price, flipping through to a page marked with a yellow stickie. "Here we have handwritten notes on here. This one here on page 9, Title IV, says, strikes out ‘for necessary expenses,’ which means they can use (the money for that particular line item) for anything they want." Check the bill out, handwritten notes and all, here. The crossed out line relates to $16.8 billion to be used for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs through the Department of Energy. "Got another one here that’ll show you how Washington works. Handwritten notes on here," he says as the camera zooms into another stickie-marked section. "Here we’ve got $100 million crossed out and substituted in handwriting $150 milllion. That’s page 20 of Title X. This is how your Congress works," says Price as the camera pulls out and he neatly stacks the bill back on his desk. The extra $50 million, by the way, is for grants to enable states to build and remodel nursing homes for veterans.

I am unfortunate enough to live in Tom Price’s district. He has been nothing more than a rubber stamp for George Bush all these years, and now he’s whining because his party is out of power. 8 years of Bush got us into this mess, Tom. Let Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the Dems clean up your mess!

Another Civil War? I’m in! Can I command the South this time? I know I can win, because after I am through with the North…everyone will be victims!

Price….it’s good to know you are a man of integrity and consistency, thanks for doing this all the years you served under George Bushs transparent presidency too…….NOT

I am so sick of the Republicans whining over everything!! We put up with the last 8 years of this–now President Obama is trying to get us straightened out and the Republicans just cannot stand it!! I could just slap them!!

The democrat party is corrupt, thank goodness the repubicans are looking out for the taxpayers dollars in this pork filled stimulas bill that is nothing but pay back to those that voted Obama in office. Why are they behind closed doors is the question that should be asked and not including the republican party, where is the bipartianship in that. So much for CHANGE!!

Yeh, where in the hell was this video freak when we REALLY needed him to show America how the Bush administration operated?! What an idiot!

Can’t republicans use words of their own? There is nothing said here that has not been uttered, blubbered, or spewed by Limbaugh and his ilk. Dittoheads, indeed!

Why in the world would you offer up a link to a website where the blogger has been forced to recind about 40% of his statements because they were proven to be false?
It make it hard to consider you to be a credible poster if that is your source!

These people who are against this new administration will bring America down, they still can not accept their loss and I guess they are wishing this administration will fail, that’s idiotic !

Their stimulus consists of:
Cut taxes for the rich(who mostly cheat on their taxes and hide their wealth anyway)
Start War(s)

Truth Matters Said: “These people who are against this new administration will bring America down, they still can not accept their loss and I guess they are wishing this administration will fail, that’s idiotic”
No, it is Obama and his liberal socialists pals that are bringing America Down. Good-bye America, it was good while it lasted. Sigh

Yeah, Bush was bad…BUT Obama is worse!!! How are the dems remedying the situation? By compounding it . (Like children…) They claim…well Bush spent a lot of money…now it’s our turn!!
So, this is change? No, this is proof that our government no longer works for the people. Those dems who campaigned…Obama especially…LIED to get into office…….Time for a civil war to take back our country before the morons totally destroy it! Theft by these hooligans is what this bill is….and I am angry!!

This Independent says, It is about time! :)
Any thinking American will vote no on this obscene democrat pet project spending spree being used as a drawn out campaign stimulus for 2010 and 2012!
We don’t have a president – we have an arrogant, obfuscating salesman who wings it using fear-mongering and lies! :(
It is embarrassing to keep seeing and hearing this guy on TV ads!
We need a president who knows how to lead! Step down if you can’t hack it Obama!

Interesting all you liberals blabbering, whining & crying about the oppositon doing what the opposition is SUPPOSED to do.
Remember the concept of checks & balances?
You yap all the time about moving forward, so stop whining and MOVE ON. It is a new time in America, the people are tired of BOTH parties decidding every bill that comes before them has to get laiden down with garbage that has nothing to do with the real purpose of the bill.
You clowns are to stupid to realize that the Republicans are acting helping you. If they were truly in favor of themselves over the country, they would just let everything that Obama/Pelosi/Reid want pass right on through with no protests. Then after a while, they would gradually leak out stories about all the pork and then let Obama & the Dems defend everything to the people!
Instead, they are making an attempt, the SAME attempt I would expect from Dems if the situation were reversed right now, to clean up these enormous bills.
This thing is now over 1,000 Pages !!!!!!!
Let us hope this rewrite contains estimates for the number of jobs crerated & saved by each appropriation!

No system of checks and balances. Welcome to socialism.
Bigger government will not stimulate the economy. Government jobs will not stimulate the economy. Only the private sector and cutting taxes, payroll taxes will stimulate the economy.
The House and Senate stimulus bill will overturn welfare reform. The federal government will begin paying states bonuses to increase their welfare caseloads. Indeed, the new welfare system created by the stimulus bills is actually worse than the old AFDC program because it rewards the states more heavily to increase their caseloads. Under the stimulus bills, the federal government will pay 80 percent of cost for each new family that a state enrolls in welfare; this matching rate is far higher than it was under AFDC.
Welcome to socialism, why work hard and prosper.

Socialism has never worked. This bill is a waste. This is change to be ashamed of.
On the other hand…I’m so proud of those that took a stand and voted against it. It took courage…but it was the right thing to do.

And look at what obama has managed to do in just 3 weeks!!! Socialize health care that no one wants and attempt to digitize personal health records without giving anyone a chance to read the bill….This tyrannical democrat rule is out of control and going to destroy america with their arrogant attititude and lack of any economic sense. Nancy needs to stay home instead of trying to romp off to rome to see a Pope who doesnt WANT to see her!! She is a disgrace with her views on abortion and thievery of the americans, their children and grand childrens hard earned money. of course she wont ever want for money, since she most likely ineherited hers, since I doubt she could actually generate one red cent. THe democrats would be better off if they would get rid of princess pelosi and the expense that goes with sending her back and forth to San Fancisco on a military jet. shes a joke!!!
I want my country back and am appaled and the reckless an irresponsible actions of othe democrats, who had a closed door meeting, without any republican input. Hmmmm would make you think they are acutally SCARED of something!!! These scarlet lettered leaders need to be removed and replaced with moral people who dont steal from the public or do illmoral deeds!!! They nasueate me and all REAL Americans!!

Give me a break. What Bush wrought on this country will take decades to fix. Obama is taking strides in the right direction. You can have philosophical differences but when you spout nonsense like that you lose all credibility.

I got an idea…move to Alaska then you can work with Todd and Sarah Palin to secede from the Union.

May i make a suggestion..those republicans who are representing their constituents and are SO oppossed to the stimulus bill..remain steadfast in their deeply held principles…and not accept a dime of the stimulus money…then you will have some credibility-but i suspect your constituents will tar and feather you for that…because they would like to recover too

Posted by: cowgirl | February 13, 2009, 5:03 pm 5:03 pm

tax payers will get 13$ per month for 5 months from this bill. Wow! I think I will go by a bmw!!!! Its going to cost them more to send the $13 than its really worth1!! I would have rather had a tax CUT!!!!

Posted by: marla | February 13, 2009, 5:22 pm 5:22 pm

Hey marla-use the $13 dollars to buy yourself some reading glasses so you can finish reading the bill….or start…or sign up for a course in cognitive thinking

Posted by: cowgirl | February 13, 2009, 5:41 pm 5:41 pm

that sounds like an insult to me and I think with two degrees I can manage cognitive thinking. Is the bill even out yet!!!!

This is now a government OF the elite, BY the elite FOR any project that makes THEM feel good. Our constitution is now out the window….and based on Judeo/Christian values?….flushed.

The Democrats are complaining about the Republicans trying to stop Obama’s agenda?
It is time for someone to stop this race to socialism. It is also ironic when you think about the obstructionism of the Democrats during Bush’s years in office.
This bill will drag down the economy and put in place massive government programs that will take away freedoms.
The Obama supporters should read the Constitution.

The socialists will never admit that Comrad Obama isn’t looking out for everyone’s best interest. Wait untill they can’t get heart surgery because the government decides it is too costly. Forget reading glasses because they won’t help grandma who can’t see because she can’t get cataract surgery. Uncle Joe will die before he can get angioplasty to open a clogged artery, I guess he shouldn’t have eaten all those nasty transfats.
Maybe we should all quit our jobs and go on welfate. The government is going to provide the best in health care so why not? They might decide Mom can’t get that joint replacement but I’ll be taken care of. Hey welfare might just pay more since they get a tax refund even when they don’t pay taxes. Sounds better than $13. Comrad Obama afterall knows best.
Hopefully in two years the true conservatives will take back congress and kick those socialists over to Russia where they belong. The Russian people knew communism was bad but now the liberals think they can take it and make it work for the U.S.

If the Republicans had passed this bill, they would say we couldn’t afford another four years of this presidency. Unbelievable. This is simply pay-back to all the people that got Obama elected. Congratulations, we’re well on our way to Communism. Nice to know I’ll never have a good night’s sleep again.

Our national debt more than doubled during the Clinton Administration. That administration was followed by a recession. During the Bush administration the national debt almost doubled again. That administration is being followed by a worldwide recession. We can’t stand four more years of the last 16 years. Spending more only accumulates more debt. Our economy must be allowed to find a comfort zone relative to our production and our debt. Government spending must be reduced. We are no longer the world’s leading manufacturing nation and our production is decreasing. Therefore the government has less and less income as it spends more and more. Unless our economy experiences an unprecidented boom and we reduce spending, this country will never again see the prosperity of the past. It’s as if everything possible is being done to ensure national failure.
