Gregg to be Named Commerce Secretary-Designate Tuesday A.M.

Sources tell ABC News that late Tuesday morning in the White House’s Grand Foyer, President Obama will announce that he has tapped Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., to be his Secretary of Commerce.

Senate Democrats expect that Democratic Gov. John Lynch of New Hampshire will appoint a Republican to serve out the remainder of Sen. Gregg’s term, until 2010, and that Republican will almost certainly be J. Bonnie Newman.

Newman — co-chair of Republicans for Lynch in 2004 — is a former president of UNH, former assistant Commerce Secretary for President Reagan and former head of administrative operations for President George H.W. Bush.

It wasn’t mentioned that Governor Lynch is appointing a Republican Senate replacement, because that was a stipulation of Judd’s before he would accept the commerce position.

Mr. Obama’s administration is already the most corrupt in US history – and I am just talking about Mr. Obama himself.

Concerned in OH: “Is there a single Democratic appointment by 0bama that isn’t a lobbyist, corrupt, or a tax cheat?”
Yes, dozens. And since you threw lobbyists in there, it is a matter of public record that he has far fewer than any president since Carter. But you don’t care about reality, do you? Actually, you probably consider simply being a Democrat as being corrupt, unpatriotic and a traitor.

If media reports are true, conservatives are at the very least at risk of trading a somewhat liberal Republican for a more liberal one. What if the governor fails to honor the “deal” and appoints a Democrat?

R Mutt
Obama was marketed with A BILLION DOLLARS.
That is the beginning and end of why he won.
————-
Speculation from Larry Kudlow about why Sen. Gregg might want to lay down with pork:
“Fiscally, Gregg is much more conservative than LaHood. Of course, Team Obama knows all this. They know exactly what they would be getting with Judd Gregg as commerce secretary.
So maybe this awful stimulus bill will in fact be completely changed and delayed until we can figure out how much the next TARP bill is gonna cost. Until Team Obama can come up with a TARP plan and a TARP number for borrowing, the stimulus package should be shelved (and completely reworked).
Might Judd Gregg be the catalyst for all this? Let’s wait and see.”

Concerned in OH: That would 13 lobbyists out of how many appointments, and how exactly are you defining a “lobbyist” – wrote a letter for the PTA one year? Don’t mean to nitpick, but you have a habit of lying (amazing how Obama got elected after one of his goons carved a B in some poor woman’s face, eh?).
Anyhow, I’ve never been too concerned by the lobbyist issue and was actually a little dismayed about how he exaggerated it a bit during the election. I’m glad to see he’s not falling into the “zero tolerance” trap for the simple minded and am impressed at how he’s been able to find more qualified non-lobbyist cabinet members than any administration in my memory.

We still have two years to go to break the Republican strangle hold on our economy and our future. The arrogance, to think they believe they know how to fix things after eight disastrous years so far. Back Obama, if his plans fail we’ll all vote him out. Stop acting stupid.

” The arrogance, to think they believe they know how to fix things after eight disastrous years so far.”
What stranglehold? The Dow is down 1700 points since Obama was elected. Investors have no faith in your Messiah.
Unless they invest there will be no jobs.

After thousands of deaths, two wars, and the largest attack on American soil, republicans want to come on here and have the nerve to criticize……ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
After the mess you people left, you have absolutely NO say in ANYTHING !!!!

The Democrats have no spine. I can’t believe they’re all agreeing that the democratic governor of NH should appoint a Republican for the vacated Senate seat. Moreover, I think that Obama should stop pandering to the Republicans since they’re refusing to support him anyway. He should just take advantage of the next two years to push through as much legislation as possible. After all, that’s why both he was elected and why the Dems won control of congress in ’06. Why are they tip-toeing around the minority??

Posted by: MF | February 3, 2009, 12:44 am 12:44 am

I think it makes sense that Republicans have more say.
******************************************************
Oh? Even with a vast majority in the House that enabled the stimulus bill to pass with all Republicans voting against, and with the almost filler-buster of 60, shy of one, in the Senate? Does the word, denial, perhaps ring a bell for a diatribe a tad dingy?

Posted by: kathy | February 3, 2009, 2:52 am 2:52 am

Obama is taken advantage of the Republican Party. He shouldn’t pick an Republican in his cabinet. So this means the Governor from NH will appoint a Democrat to the Senate. It is time for the Republican Party to start bring back together as conservative and they will have both control in the House and Senate in 2010. The voters are already mad what they are seeing since Obama took office last month. Obama has broken his promise and lied to the America people. The Democratic in Washington are corrupt and cheating. Obamagate is worse than Watergate. I am glad I didn’t vote for him.

I find it funny that the only people who refer to Obama as Messiah are Republicans.
Perhaps they secretly worship him.

Obama said this would be hard. Folks are so attached to the old petty bickering. It’s really sad. The country is in trouble and people on both sides are still using talking points. This week: Republicans (liberals/Dems don’t mind raising taxes because they don’t pay them)
Democrats (Rush Limbaugh is the head of the Republican party).
Welcome to Junior High School. Only problem is that while they call each other names more people are losing their jobs.
As an independent I believe the more folks who drop out of both of these parties, the better this country will be.

Posted by: Missy | February 3, 2009, 6:15 am 6:15 am

I guess Obama couldn’t find a suitable Democrat after Richardson. Bwahahahah!

Posted by: LongT | February 3, 2009, 7:48 am 7:48 am

I have almost no faith in where we are headed now. The dow is down another 10% since Obama was elected. We have a tax cheat coming up with a bank bailout plan of all things, an undercover insider lobbyist nominated for HH Resources, a CIA director wth little to no experience in the area, and Hillary trotting the globe. What else will there be?

Posted by: LongT | February 3, 2009, 7:54 am 7:54 am

There are dumb Republicans, and then there are really really stupid Republicans, like Gregg.

Posted by: bill-tb | February 3, 2009, 7:54 am 7:54 am

The problem of having a super majority is all the crazies in your own party come out and start demanding stuff to support you. (See President Jimmy Carter, see President George W Bush) This was Karl Rove’s major flaw . . . he never considered the fact that you NEED the “OTHER” party to control your own.

It is obvious what Obama is doing. Even though he would like us to believe that he is simply finding the best people for the job, he is actually trying to set the stage for his reelection. Every move that he has made in filling his cabinet is totally political. He is choosing those individuals who represent states and/or constituencies that he wants to win in 2012. He wants South Dakota, so he is standing by Tom Daschle. He wants Hillary’s 18 million votes, so he names her Secretary of State. Janet Napolitano will help him in Arizona. Gregg is a Republican who can help him in New Hampshire. In other words, Obama is NO different from George Bush, who spent his entire first term planning for his reelection, and thus, letting the country go to buck. Obama has been a real disappointment so far. All the talk of doing what is best for the American people was just that, talk. Like all politicians, he ONLY cares about doing what is best for himself.

KMB; My grandmother was a waitress on Capital Hill in the 50′s. She actually had a congressman confide to her that the only talent one needs to be a successful politician is a long line of B.S.

Obama’s stimulus package includes :
• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.
• $650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program.
• $88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).
• $448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.
• $248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.

$246 million stimulus money to go to Hollywood producers in tax breaks so that they can buy film. Your money at work. Pay to pay politics.

In all fairness, how noticeable could any actions become after just two weeks?? Republicans still stood by GWB after 8 years of mess-ups! LOL! I will say, though, that Obama has spent too much time pandering to the minority side. He needs to just move forward with his agenda and not forget those who put him in office. Otherwise, he will definitely lose a lot of the independents who voted for him this time. Those people tend to sway a lot in their voting, so he should not lose sight of this. Also, admittedly, some of Obama’s picks for his Cabinet are not the best. Daschle is an old school ghost from the past, and what’s so great about the guy from NH for Commerce? However, I’m not so sure about his motives in picking people for his Cabinet to help him in his re-election. The Dems don’t need much help in NH, and Daschle isn’t going to be an asset in SD. After all, as a long-time incumbant in the Senate, Daschle lost his re-election there.

Presidents are known for sending out their cabinet members to tout programs or policies, as well as to campaign for their reelections. It has been more than two weeks since the reelection campaign stage began to be set. This began right after November 4th. The entire transition has been built upon the foundation of his getting a second term. His version of Karl Rove, David Axelrod, has been at the helm.
