Henrietta Hughes
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller Report from Ft. Myers, Fla.:
At President Obama’s town hall meeting in Ft. Myers, Fla., today, one questioner stood out. Henrietta Hughes took the microphone and in a wavering voice, asked the president for help.
"I have an urgent need, unemployment and homelessness, a very small vehicle for my family and I to live in," she said. "The housing authority has two years’ waiting lists, and we need something more than the vehicle and the parks to go to. We need our own kitchen and our own bathroom. Please help."
President Obama gave her a kiss on the cheek, telling her, "We’re going to do everything we can to help you, but there are a lot of people like you." He said his staff would meet with her after the town hall.
Hughes says she and her adult son have been homeless for "a long time." She says her son lost his job in computer programming, and they in turn lost their house. She says she has been looking for a job, although she is on disability for cancer, but so far has not been able to find work.
Hughes was visibly moved by the president. "I’m just grateful to have him to acknowledge and for him to hear me," she said. She would not give specifics about the type of help White House has promised her, only saying she was "satisfied."
Hughes says she was not able to vote on election day because she does not have an address. She said without a vote, she prayed that Mr. Obama would win. "I said, ‘Lord please have mercy on Mr. Obama." and the Lord did so.’"
After the president left, reporters crowded around Hughes, doing one interview after another. People in the crowd handed her business cards and cash. Florida Rep. Nick Thompson has offered her and her son a home in La Belle, a town about two hours from Ft. Myers.

I apologize to Ms Hughes for the cynicism with which I first read this entry. I sincerely hope that she and her son are well.

Say a prayer for Henrietta, her family and for those in similar circumstances.
It could easily be one of us having to live in our car.

Let’s just wait and see the real story on this female and her’son’. I’ve been around a long time. Now is when we see the real bleeding hearts; this lady will be rich in a week.

jpt quotes:
“We’re going to do everything we can to help you, but there are a lot of people like you.”
Nobody who watched it happen will forget what this piece doesn’t mention, that before shunting Hughes off to “my staff”, He patronized and insulted her by calling her “young lady”. A lot of His other remarks to the crowd were similarly condescending, or outright pandering.
There are quite a few more like Hughes than there are bank executives and board members. And yet … The Puppet has NOTHING to say about the poor, who WERE poor during the primaries. Possibly because they didn’t fund his takeover of the government.
The Florida sideshow has now managed to produce one instant celebrity (the young white guy) and, presumably, to house ONE mother-and-son duo of the homeless, despite the unchanging NATIONAL corruption of HUD, which concerns itself — aside from paying its operatives more than those in most other bureaucracies — more with funneling $ to landlords, and getting its claws into property owned by poor people to TRANSFER to landlords, than to doing anything else.
Oh … and to take the news-cycle edge off Geithner’s no-go contention that if the government pours ENOUGH billions into the banks, some of it will eventually bubble out in loans … to people who can, if the judgement of the banks, afford them.
The “Obama” organization, by their own pronouncements, is concerned not with the homeless and about-to-be homeless, but with the “housing market” — the real estate of it all.
Meanwhile, looks like the stock market went DOWN on the news the Senate went along with this crap.

“Now is when we see the real bleeding hearts; this lady will be rich in a week.”
Well, she won’t be as rich as Daschle, Geithner, et al. And she’s one of more than a million who are officially “homeless” — not counting many others who are doing everything from living on other people’s couches to living in dangerous situations — especially women with young children — to AVOID being homeless. And remember that the Hughes family is UPPER-homeless, in that they live in a car (something with a door to close).
As for “bleeding hearts”, why don’t YOU try living in your car for a week … and using only the “public” restrooms that would be available to you if you were rumpled, unwashed … or any of the things that identify a person as “homeless”.

You mean to tell me that she is asking for a handout but couldnt even take the time to get a PO Box so she could vote. Her and her son can take mediocre jobs to make ends meet, but they chose not too. Things will get better but you have to take upon yourself to get out from under the rock. You cannot sit back and wait for uncle sugar aka “the governent” to toss a check in your mailbox. This lady will probably get a book deal and will be on the road with Obama next week, you just wait. Didnt vote, but wants a hand out instead of a step up…only in america!

Where are our bleeding hearts. America is the land of the beautiful and home of the brave!!! What the heck. This lady needs help and your going to rip her a new one for getting it?? What happened to empathy and if you can help one person they may help hundreds more in turn. These comments are cold!!

“You cannot sit back and wait for uncle sugar aka “the governent” to toss a check in your mailbox.”
That’s what the banks and corporations and politicians do … but they seem to have glommed onto MOST of the public resources, so that there’s nothing, literally nothing, for those whose class position didn’t guarantee them, from birth, a spot at the “success” trough.
Your assumption that there are “mediocre” jobs by which the underclasses might “make ends meet” is laughably mistaken: the price of groceries, for example, has doubled …
Posted by: Human Intelligence | February 10, 2009, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm
@Jeff Miller
I’m from Ft. Myers…First off, you need money to open a PO Box and this family can not afford that…and that does stop you from voting here in Lee County. As to your comment about taking a mediocre job I can tell you that there are NO jobs down here…not even mediocre ones. The unemployment rate for zip code 33916 in the heart of Lee County is over 20% which is great depression level…don’t worry though its coming to a city near you.

“You mean to tell me that she is asking for a handout but couldnt even take the time to get a PO Box so she could vote.”
The “homeless” CAN, technically, qualify to vote, at least in some states, by using a bureaucratically-vetted PHYSICAL (note: NOT a Post Office Box) address-of-convenience.
Then again, voting’s not all it’s cracked up to be: the US just voted for “change”, and wound up with a steaming crock of warmed-over corporate flim-flam.

I wonder if Henrietta knows that Obama’s half brother lives on $12 a year and recently was booked for dealing in Kenya.
My point is people like Henrietta have bought in that Obama’s the cigarette smoking former doper who gave only 4% of his $1.6 million income vs President Bush’s 12% of his $.6 million income.
Sorry about her status but why are they living in that area? I did a Google search on “computer programmer jobs” and The Developers.net free tech-jobs board has 41,656 full-time technology career opportunities, each linked directly to the employer’s Web site and in FL 325 jobs! I’m sorry but MOVE!

Is someone going to investigate her to see if she is telling the truth..the way they tried to ruin Joe The Plumber. A lot of these people made bad choices. I mean if you are working 4 years a McDonald’s and want a better job,-what is stopping you? Do you have some sort of criminal record, etc. What’s going on? You can’t depend on the government to take care of you, you have to help yourselves. Obama can’t deliver free homes and cell phones to these people, and if they think he can, they are wrong. It’s not cynicism, I am tired of paying taxes to support these people. I went to school, I work hard for everything I have, they already get my money by my taxes, what more do they want? Get out there, get educated and work and you’ll succeed, but it’s easier to be dumb, sit around eating and not working and rely on other people paying for your bad decisions. Wake up

This was a disgrace. These ignorant people bought the Obama BS hook, line, and sinker. This lady, as well as Julio the 4-year McDonald’s burger flipper who, by the way, is in his second year of college, wanted to know what Big O was going to do about giving him more freebies, are poster children for what the Left has been doing: creating a nation of helpless, gutless, and useless individuals who think that the government should take care of them, cradle to grave.
Government is not the panacea for all your problems, it is THE problem.
It’ just going to get worse, folks.

I think dealing with George W. Bush these past 8 years have made some of you extremely cynical and jaded. Anyone who heard the tremble in this woman’s voice as she was asking this question had to feel some kind of compassion for her situation, but I guess that’s an emotion that is in very short supply around here…until it happens to YOU!

I can’t either. It’s also hard imagining people using this report as a segway into vitriol and blame. It’s too bad the tragic, though inspirational, can be so thoughtlessly skewed.
Maybe some of the posters are so quick to blame Henrietta because they don’t want to acknowledge her misfortune could happen to them, too – that they could lose their health, insurance, job, and home.

Cynics – but down your arms
Henrietta Hughes is not the enemy

How did she know about the town hall meeting? Well, I’d guess she knew the same way I did. It was all over the news and everyone was talking about it.
How did she get tickets? Unlike W’s events, tickets to this were not pure political patronage, they were available to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. People camped online to get them. She was homeless and I’d guess that she waited online in the hope of finding hope.
Boy, this group is sure full of angry cynics. I’d bet most of you go to big Churches and consider yourselves “Christians” too. People like you make me very glad that I’m not a Christian. I wouldn’t want to be like you in any way.

I feel for her — and the people I meet every day, those in the same situation or worse, that I work to get medical and social support for. My desk, table, cabinets and car are piled with files…
But I don’t for a minute believe Obama gives a shred about her. It’s all just words for him. Image, belief, rhetoric, lies. He’s a politician. The best case scenario of his “interest” is that she WILL benefit from his need to polish his image even more. The real-life best case is that people who really care, without publicity, will help her over the long term.

(Please if you read these entries, don’t let the nasty comments get you down. I have a few relatives that think negatively like that; they are joyless folk.)
We should all remember that any of us could be in their situation very quickly. Even those with health insurance soon find out the limits of their coverage when they have a serious illness that requires long term treatments. Add on losing a job and most people could end up with their house in foreclosure. To those grouchy souls, think before you touch the keyboard.

“FTMY in the know – could you recommend a good hotel to stay at whilst in Ft Meyers?” (Posted by: Gretta | Feb 10, 2009 10:07:18 PM)
For a touch of “We don’t get that we LOST the Civil War” charm, you could always stay at the Robert E. Lee Best Western in North Fort Myers… :)
But seriously, in Ft. Myers proper, the only hotel I would recommend, especially for a far removed tourist such as yourself (I picked up on the whilst reference) would be the Ambassador Riverfront in downtown. In unincorporated Ft. Myers (South Ft. Myers) the Crowne Plaza is an excellent choice. If your looking for quality beach front, I would recommend Diamondhead Resort or Pink Shell in the town of Ft. Myers Beach…

That woman really had a story to tell, I’m sure one that’s being told a lot all over the country. I feel for her. But I’m hoping that in the future people, esp AA women who attend an Obama presidential event remember what it is, and discreetly approach staff to ask them how to approach Obama about her problem. And ask for a JOB. His staffers are all over the place at these events. She could also have handed him a note. It just made me uncomfortable to see this and how it’s being exploited and ooh and aahed all over the tv. Now somebody’s given her a house. Obama’s very sweet but does he really want to be seen as the go to guy for a house and car at an event like this?? I’ve read some really nasty comments and it could have been avoided if O and his team had handled it more discreetly. And should a crowd break out in a scream because the President kissed a woman on the cheek-then you see a woman to the left mouth the words”I love you BARACK??” Barack??? He’s the president. It’s just something really creepy about how SOME people treat him, almost in a messianac way.

She wasn’t given a house. She was “lent” a house that is not selling. Saying that she was given a house is a falsehood and getting people all worked up. I wish her luck and we all need some help now and then.

The woman mouthing ” I love you” to Obama is nowhere to be seen in the video. Nothing in either the transcript or video supports your talking point of Obama being a “Messiah.” The crowd broke out into cheering and applause, not screaming, when he kissed her on the cheek, because they were supporting his show of compassion towards her.
Posted by: kathy | February 11, 2009, 12:47 am 12:47 am
The woman on the left did mouth “I love you, Barack.” Anderson Cooper played the Hughes video on CNN and not only does she mouth it, if you listen closely, you can hear her also. I guess she should have said “Mr. President,” but I obviously people feel he is one of “us.” Whether or not it was staged, who really knows?

Wow: I think this “town hall” meeting is just nerve wrecking. I think we saw a lot of common folks in desperate need of basic help. It’s great to see that Obama did not screen speakers. It’s also great to see that Mrs. Hughes is able to get help.
But, as the President stated, there are a lot of folks like her. I hope the President will remain true for others with similar needs.

One person commented on how cynical some of these comments have been. Well what would you expect? With the MSM having selected McCain as the GOP and in the tank for Obama promoted Obama’s election and then with this piece you don’t think the MSM has once again biased the news?
How about this: Tapper says:
“Florida Rep. Nick Thompson has offered her and her son a home in La Belle, a town about two hours from Ft. Myers.”
Why else but because of MSM bias did
Tapper simple say this:
“Florida Rep. Nick Thompson a Republican, has offered her and her son a home in La Belle, a town about two hours from Ft. Myers”?
Bias pure and simple.

Dear Conservatives:
What you should be more concerned about are the thieves and crooks in the investment banking industry who have brought this country to near collapse. They manufactured $68 Trillion Dollars in Credit Debt Swaps, funny money with no value and sold these all over the world. When these worthless papers were called upon, the deceit and fraud was exposed. You conservatives, many who complain because you don’t have self-esteem except as you compare yourselves to others with less than you seem to have, don’t dare criticize the real people who milked the system “big time”–those on Wall Street. Those are the people who took our tax money and will take more as times goes on. If you conservatives were so smart, and so talented, this is where you should be focusing your energy. No, you admire these Wall Street welfare cheats because they worked hard, got lots of education and engaged in “White” collar crime. Who are you low-life, insecure barely-making it to keep up with the Joneses people with no feeling. I supposed you thought our former President was intelligent and worked hard. He was the most undeserving and least intellectual president we have ever had. By the way, his inability to reason and his poor judgment also contributed to the sad state of our country and the world. If you always need to put someone else down to make yourselves look good, what status do your really have?. By the way, there are many people who have worked hard, gotten education and are homeless. Do you read at all, do you react to anything other than your prejudices and your emotions. See a shrink!

I would not want you to think that every cynical Republican on these boards is going to knock Ms. Hughes. I feel for the woman and will hold her in my prayers. I am glad to see that she is getting help– and you’ll notice it was bipartisan help. A REpublican representative is giving her temporary shelter.
What disturbs me is that there are, as noted here, a lot of people in her situation and sad as it is, we can’t help every one who gets through to the president for a direct appeal but ignore all the ones who have no such access. She should not have been a “human interest story” but that is what she has become.
BTW, I have to think that a lot of the help that is available for people in such dire circumstances is not reaching this woman, perhaps because she did not know how to access it. Is she on Medicaid? She would definitely qualify. Sign her up for subsidized housing, food stamps, job training for her son. She is old and sick and does not need to worry about getting into the work force necessarily, but I hope the system kicks in to help her son become able to support himself and her.
I’ll admit that as sympathetic as I feel for this woman, I do have some question about her son’s situation– I reserve judgment because I lack information. That does NOT mean that I want the media to turn his life inside out as they did with Joe the Plumber.

Richard @4:56am-there’s something really really creepy about a woman who looks old enough to be Obama’s mother mouthing I love you BARACK at a serious event like this like she’s at a Justin Timberlake concert, and who should respect the office of the presidency whether she feels he’s one of us or not.

Thank you to Moderate and others who have a heart. We would all like to believe that in the United States our social safety net of subsidized housing, job training, and other benefits is really a safety NET, and that anyone who “really wants to work” can find a job–sentiments reflected below.
The tragedy of our current economic situation is that there are many Americans who no longer have a safety net. They have run out of unemployment benefits, they’ve lost any health care coverage they once had, they therefore can’t pay rent or a mortgage and become homeless.
The President correctly noted that there are many people in the same situation as Henrietta Hughes.
The Republican governor of Florida completely understands the situation–he clearly sees how the citizens of his state are suffering. The Republicans in the Congress, on the other hand, don’t understand–they are out to “score points” rather than to solve problems.

It takes a lot to get up in front of people, let alone the President of the United States and tell the world you are living in a car! She is the face of every person truly struggling. We don’t know all the information so please don’t cast her as manipulative or lazy or having a good for nothing son. You don’t know what they might have been through and I pray it doesn’t happen to you or your loved ones. Folks….stop the politics and the hate. If we don’t come together in times of true crises, when do we come together at all? Personally, I’m glad she got some help. Maybe her story will make a difference to others. The preacher at Obama’s swearing ceremony should ask when the black man will do the right thing.

Do you people not see a pattern in all of these people wanting a free lunch. Every looser that wants a free handout takes money from my kids.
I bought a house I can afford. Many bought too much house and for that they want those who act responsable to again pay for their mistakes. These people really think Obama is going to give them money. A free society cannot stand with so many free loaders.

Wow…tough crowd! Not everyone who is homeless or struggling is freeloading from the system you know. I know a few people that need extra help and working their way off welfare becasue they want to stand on their own feet. As a taxpayer, I am happy to help those who are seeking to better themselves. This woman from what litte information there is out there, doesn’t seem like a free loader. And what does being an Obama supporter have to do with anything? Who ever won the election, being faced with the same situation….would you have wanted them to just turn and say “I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling..good luck with that” and just turn away? That would be wrong in every way possible.

The reason we are in this fix is because of the following Democrats screwing with the housing and banking industry…
Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and of course Obama during his community activists days and his clients in ACORN. Forcing banks to money to people who could not pay it back.
Called Ninja Loans(No Income, Job, Assets). Just give them a loan.
I see Ms. Highes everyday.
I went to High School with many Ms. Hughes who dropped out mind you they were in the same school as me but dropped out and are still working for minimum wage. They had the same chance as me actually a better chance considering minorities get to go to college with alot of financial assistance others arent qualified for.

Henrietta needs to go to her church and her family and her community before even thinking of going to the government.I agree the truh will be different from what we first saw. This is not the American spirit. People need to help people. What’s the govenment got to do with it?

Only in the most testing of times, do we see the worst in people when they have no shame in attacking people who genuinely at their wits-end, begging, (yes, BEGGING, that’s what Bush has reduced some people to doing) the most powerful man on Earth for help. Only when we have had 8 years of the most rediculous, selfish, and geediest leadership, is when things have gotten so bad BECAUSE of that leadership – that we see his supporters atacking the victims of the mess he has left.
And why? Why is it now – in the worst of times – tiimes when we need to bwork together instead of against each other – that some people can be so heartless as to attack someone for simply being honest about the strife in this country? – because the attackers themselves are ashamed that they stood behind Bush for far too long. They are in such denial, that they don’t know how to deal with it – other than lash-out at anyone who BRINGS TO LIGHT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE LAST 8 YEARS.
Simply by exposing the disgusting under-side of his decisions – has freaked these people out. They just don’t know what else to do about it – other than to attack.
They attack people like Henrietta Hughes – because they don’t know what else to do with their shame. All it is really, is mis-directed anger at the failures of our government for the last 8 years. From surplus – to financial melt-dows, joblessness and homelessness.
They see it – they see the errors of the last 8 years – but to admit it is just too much for them to bear – and I ALMOST agree. Accept for that one very wrong action: attacking the victims. I simply cannot do it. These people have been kicked around for far too long, while AT THE SAME TIME – corporation owners have been granted full access to hundreds of billions of dollars in the form of 0% loans. CORPRATE WELFARE.
To the attackers: When you can convince me that giving money (yes, GIVING) to an already super-rich person to keep their bottom-line from dipping, when you can convince me that a C.E.O. losing one of his many vacation homes is WORSE that Henrietta Hughs living in a f’n car – not even being able to vote – then I will join your side. But honestly, I don’t see it happening any time soon – or ever if you want the RREAL truth. Fostering job-growth can only go so far, untill it starts lliterally taking the basic necessities of life right out of the hands of hard-wprkling Americans.
As of here and now – your attacks on these victims – in the face of corprate greed gone mad – just don’t make any sense – and you know it, damn it, you know it. . . . . Go ahead, give out even MORE money to people who have more than they know what to do with. Just try it one more time – and you will see revolt like you never dreamed. And if you think that just because certain people have money means that they are safe from an angry mobs ripping them out of their houses and forcing them out in the cold – you are highly mistaken.
It has gone on long enough, this “money-only-for-the-richest-one-percent-of-the-country”, and this corporate greed must be stopped now. People like Henriettea Hughes cannot afford one more year of this bass-ackwards logic, this greed beyond even the most poorest individuals wildest dreams. This greed cannot go on one more year, and those who support it – will lose their cushy jobs just like the ones that did in November of ’08.

The haters here aren’t heartless, they’re illiterate. Love all the “why don’t you get a job instead of asking for a handout?” posts. Because 10% of the country is too lazy to get a job… yes, that’s it… I’m sure an elderly woman with cancer could get a job in 10 seconds in this market.

I worked with a woman who had terminal cancer. She was coming to work because her husband started being really nasty when she got cancer, got a girlfriend and threw it in her face, etc. He didn’t want to touch her because she “gave him the creeps” after she got cancer. She would rather die at work than at home.
She was at work high on morphine and in extreme pain. Vomiting, couldn’t eat. She was too high on painkillers to work and made all kinds of dumb mistakes. All she could do is sit there in pain. Finally the doctor forced her to quit, she died shortly after.
You’ve never worked with a sick person that can’t work. Not only do you have to do all their work for them while they get paid for nothing, you are terrified they will fall, collapse, etc., and you will have to take care of them, or catch them. My company asked me to help her in the toilet so she could still work. I said no. What if she fell and cracked her skull? What if I threw my back out?
If you think getting disability is easy, you try it. My very sick sister took 2 1/2 years to get it, and the judge said to her, they should have given it to you long ago. For that 2 1/2 years she couldn’t work and got NO money to live on. I supported her. Believe me, she was sick as a dog. She had 3 operations and many other health problems, then her savings ran out and she lost her insurance. She had a really good job before she was sick. She was NOT lazy or worthless.
They make it as hard as they can to discourage people. If that lady is on disability, she is sick all right. The states are broke – they are not giving free money away. Just try it and see how far you get.

You don’t just wander into an event like this. President Obama is coming here where I live (East Peoria, IL) tomorrow and only a few will get invited by special invitation. Security will be extreme!
Are we supposed to believe that “Henrietta The Hobo” (aka “Joe The Plumber”, take two) and her son just happened to show up in their home/truck? I don’t think so Turbo-Tax-Tim.
SHE ALREADY HAS HER OWN WEB SITE!!
Time for the media to discredit this woman by hunting for every shred of negative info they can find. Oh wait … that probably won’t happen this time … she’s a democrat.

This women that says that she is so poor and living in a car. Thats more than I had when I was down and out. I brought myself up without a handout. You got to have a little intelligent in the first place to bring youself up from where you are and not drop out of school because you thought you were smarter than the teacher. I have no sympathy for anyone who would drop out of school. they get what have.

Some of you are right on, especially the post by Dottie. I appreciate her post.I’ve not ever seen such anger, such in human thinking in my life, and I’ve been around for awhile. I think you cynics are suffering from mis directed anger. You are angry that the Bush administration caused this mess, but you have chosen President Obama to direct your anger to. And, until you walk a day in the shoes of President Obama, in the shoes of a homeless, ill person, you just need to shut up. I can no longer work in nursing because of a disability, but I substitute teach. Last summer I could not find a part time job anywhere, and I am highly educated.I will continue to work until I can no longer walk. I do not receive anything from the government, yet. Employers do discriminate. And they want young potentials, not older disabled people. Joe the Plumber was a plant. And he gained a lot of celebrity as a result of it. He gained financially from it too. So, leave Henrietta alone. The mess this country is in, is not her fault. She is an example of many people in the same situation. She clearly struck a nerve as she is the talk of the conservative internet. Sometimes it is difficult to feel joy for someone else’s fortune, when you yourself are hurting. But, try it, it does build character. And a word up; I used to be a Bushy, I attended several of his “events” but I was not ever pre-screened.

Instead of bashing her and speaking negative things, we need to pray for healing in this land to help her as well as each other in these rough times. But that just shows me how so many people are living in darkness. We are all one body in Christ, so we should help one another. I will pray for that sister and brother.

To “Te Hard-Rock, Heavy-Metal Defense Intitiative, Inc.” at 2:02 PM. I don’t think you understand what “consequences” really means. If you truly believe that everyone is in the position that they are currently in because of Bush, then you are a moron just like him. Was he a less than great prex? Sure he was. But you know what? The only “consequences” that one truly has to live with are the decisions that one makes in their own life. We all have the power to choose to not blame others for our problems and move forward. It’s not until we look at ourselves and realize that we control the “consequences” that we live with that we have the power to change our future “consequences.” Until we stop looking to others to fix our problems we are all screwed. You wanna know why? Because no one cares about you. No, really. No one cares about YOU. They care about your votes. They care about your taxes. They care about whethter you are employed or not because they care about what kind of statistic you are. But do they care about you? No. Deal with it and make your own consequences.

There is so much blame going around about who and what caused this: Bush, Clinton, Carter, Wall Street, mortgage brokers, unqualified borrowers. This is what I recommend: look up ‘Community Reinvestment Act’ on Wikipedia — they do a pretty good job giving the history of how we got this mess. Many have contributed to this snowball — all along there were some good intentions and there were some intentions laden with self-interest, but I personally blame those who were in the positions to oversea Fannie and Freddie and reform them before it got out of hand. Those who were quite aware of the issues with the balance sheets for a long time — to name three Franklin Raines, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. One left with a magnificent golden parachute and the other two are STILL in office legislating as we speak. Not only did they not take control of the situation but they blocked efforts to reform these agencies and their practices.

After the show, Obama’s people gave Ms. Hughes a business card with a number for the housing authority and told her to call.
Mrs. Thompson, wife of Rep. Thompson from Florida (R), offered her a house.
Considering Obama didn’t pay market price for his house — it was sweetheart deal from Tony Rezko, and considering his brother lives on $20 a year in a hut in Africa, and his aunt is here in the US living in projects and on welfare, did you really think Obama was going to give Ms. Hughes a house?
There is a book called “Who Really Cares” by Arthur C. Brooks — it gives statistics regarding charitable giving that dispel some accepted myths.

For all you cynics, get a life. I became unemployed in 2002 from a $50,000 a year job, took about 2 years to get another job. This was because of the downturn in my field (telecommunications) during that time. If it wasn’t for a friend who’s mother passed away and let me live in his mom’s home while he was trying to sell it, I would have been homeless as well. I was taught to treat people the way you would like to be treated. Don’t act suprised when you stand before Christ who says “I was hungry and you never fed me” and you say when, ‘but for the least of these’.

What people in SW Fl are upset about is that Corey Hughes owns a building lot – free and clear – that is taxed assessed at $12,800. A lot which, by the way, Henrietta quit-claim deeded to him in 2006. (Hopefully someone investigates if that maneuver was done to get public assistance). Also, there are no foreclosures in the public record for them (just 1 house and 1 other lot they sold to third parties at the height of the market). With so many people here WITH YOUNG CHILDREN that are homeless and own NO property they can dump to help themselves, it is indeed sorry that the Hughes’ became the poster children instead of the many thousands more deserving.

She wasn’t a plant, the evidence?
1) Bush was President for 8 years
2) Bush cut taxes for the richest 2%, they never asked for it.
3) Richest 2% sat on the extra money instead of spending it to create work.
4) Bush’s SEC ignored regulation of the derivatives market = Housing crisis = credit crisis
5) Excessive deregulation from 1978-2008
6) 500,000 jobs lost per month since September 2008
7) Bush presided over 2 recessions (March-November 2001 and December 2007-Present).
8) Bush turned a 200B Clinton surplus into a 500B deficit in ONE year.

Hey Snippy, I don’t doubt that the Republicans stack their deck, but Joe the plumber isn’t the best example as he was picked from a crowed at an Obama event. A good example of a classic Clinton plant was during her campaign stop at Grinnell College. Students were given specific questions to ask, and then were selected as if at random. It would have worked if the students weren’t so honest, and spilled the beans. It goes to show that you should never trust this sort of thing to amateurs.

I have a suggestion for you Henrietta . . . get off your overweight backside and join the rest of us working stiffs in jobs that we may not like. We work to pay the bills, live within our means and end up lucky enough to pay for the irresponsible every single time.
Henrietta, you chose to live in your car after you sold your property in 2003; you chose not to find a job that is suitable enough for your extraordinary skill set; you chose not to accept help from people and private organizations because their help wasn’t completely and utterly free. Nothing is free Henrietta, someone has to pay, if not you, then us. You want it to be us. Mrs. Hughes, you’re a leach.
There are millions of people who can’t seemingly help themselves who are depending on you and your tax contributions, so get a job . . . any job.
Stop gaming the system and get in the game like the rest of us.

Remember that no one here placed themselves in Henrietta’s life…she placed herself in OUR lives when she began begging us for governemt money. If you or Henrietta are willing to play the role of a serf then you’ll just have to put up with what comes along with that.

No not hurt feelings angry because Obama gave people like her false hope he was the Messiah and he would fix all her problems. She is a perfect example of the dumb people that supported a totally inexperienced(he wanted 3 tax cheats, one hired as head of IRS!) wants to move the Census under Rove type person(think what you would have said if Bush wanted to do that?)and now wants under the amnesty bill let illegal alien gang members become citizens if they agree not to be gangmembers! Don’t you see how this woman represented naive, simplistic 30 second solutions that evidently 53% of Americans have become!

Henrietta said she wasn’t able to vote in the last election because she didn’t have an address. That reminded me of back before the election, when Republicans in Michigan were saying they were going to contest the ballots of people whose homes were foreclosed on. Is our democracy really so far gone that homeless people are systematically disenfranchised? Talk about people who have a real interest in voting for change. To me, it hearkens back to when only white, male landowners were allowed to vote. How is this any different?

Oh my god, some of the comments on this page made me vomit in my mouth a little. This woman needs to “get off her overweight backside and get a job”? First off, this woman has CANCER. So you think seriously ill people should be in the workforce, literally working themselves to death rather than taking care of their health? Or maybe only rich people are allowed to take care of their health? And secondly, I don’t know if you’ve turned on the news any time in the past few months, but we’re in a bit of an economic downturn here. Tons of people are LOSING their jobs, so clearly it’s not the easiest time to GET one. No one is safe right now, unless they’ve got half a million dollars stashed away in a sock somewhere. I bet some of you will be singing a different tune once it’s your turn to be down and out.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!! The American people created the Economic crisis as well as our goverment. People are living above their means and borrow money they can’t afford to pay back which is causing our goverment to create bogus stimulus packages which most of the taxpaying Americans are going to have to pay back. Not the homeless or the ones on welfare. As for poor Henrietta, I am sure she is in a bad situation but if she wasn’t a plant how did she get on the front row and look so good? I think the next “townhall” meeting every homeless person in the US needs to show up and ask for a house. Better yet someone needs to go undercover and pretend to be homeless and show up at one of OB’s townhall meetings. How many do you think would get in? I’ve worked since I was 13 yrs old and if someone truly wanted a job you can find one. There are jobs everywhere in the US just ask any illegal alien. The issue is many in the US feel they are above working at minimum wage. So America we have no one to blame but ourselves and our greed. And if anyone believes Obama is going to be the Messiah think again because he has his own agenda just like every other politician and is digging the US into an even bigger debt by signing the stimulus package. He just sold us down the river and guess who will loan us the money? The same people we buy oil from and then we will be in debt to other countries. Apparently he also wanted to be a TV personality because it seems he is on TV more than any other president in previous years. I guess he hasn’t figured out he can stop campaigning now and get to work. So he’s the first black president, stop drooling, get over it and move on! He is still human and will make the same mistakes every other president has made like backtracking on all his campaign promises. As the saying goes “All promises are made to be broken!” WAKE UP AMERICA!

I love how these reporters just put anything they want in a story. Lazy. La Belle is half an hour to the east of Ft. Myers in Lee County. Belle Glade is two hours away in Palm Beach County. I guess they have never heard of Mapquest. Perhaps Henreitta could get a job proofing stories.

She is not a homeless and she is not poor. She is another crook who abuses the system.
It appears that the desperate homeless woman owns real estate she shifted into the name of her son to avoid taxes and acquire government aid.
As always happen when government start to distribute aid only those who is closer to the distribution or clever enough to cheat will rip the system, but real homeless will be still homeless it will be just more of them because country will be poorer as result of government economics.

To all of those with the heartless comments, you are not to judge! You guys talk as if she was a ploy to gain votes, but we don’t need votes anymore! Obama is President! And a damn good one too! Can you even see someone talking to Bush that way? It wouldn’t have happened. God Bless Henrietta and her family and all who need help! We are supposed to love one another, not bash! Just be careful of what you say, because there is a final judgement day!

When they calculate the number of unemployed, they should also subtract ALL the jobs posted in EVERY classified section of EVERY newspaper in America, plus every job site, Craiglist, etc.
For Pete’s sake, people– there are quadriplegics working productive jobs and even RUNNING BUSINESSES! Google Ken LeBrun for just one example.
Any able bodied person or disabled who have some ability should be ashamed of themselves for not working in the face of QUADRIPLEGICS like Ken LeBrun!
People like Henrietta and her son make me sick. No reason either of them can’t perform some type of task in exchange for a wage.
And all you mushy-headed liberals acting as apologists for people like this are only enabling this type of entitlement mindset to propagate. You are no better than Henrietta and her bum of a son.

Jimmy carter,a democratic president, started this economic crisis when he gave the loaning institutions power to loan money for housing that people couldn`t afford. Now its kicking people in the but because everything has caught up with them and they are losing their homes and jobs, including me.But Mr. Obamma is borrowing billions from china and he knows that the U.S. government can`t afford to pay it back either,so whats the difference. If we lose our homes we will also lose our government. NOW,for the person that said the republicans will do what ever it takes to win the next election no matter what it does to the economy. In 2006,your democratic party was in control of our country and could have done a lot to help the economy, like freezing gas prices etc,but what did they do? they knew that a election was coming in 2008 and didn`t give a dam about our economy. They had to make every thing look bad for the republicans so they could win the election, and they did just that.So what does that proove? Neither the republicans or the democrats give a hoot how you live or eat. We are the suckers to these crooked, lieing, worthless pieces of garbage, that need to be destroyed one way or the other. It does not matter to me any more for I have lost everything I worked for in life and will die of cancer soon. Good luck to all you suckers.

Interested in how Mr. Obama assisted Ms. Hughes. Interesting that she felt it would be possible for Mr. Obama to help her at the exclusion of all of the other Americans.

I don’t know who I feel worse for, this poor woman or you compassionless conservatives. At least her lot in life will change while yours will be awash in hate.

Official unemployment is nearly 10 percent and real unemployment figures are nearly double that. Even if you factor out the fact that some areas have 25% unemployment and others have 5% the country as a whole is going down the tubes.
Your hate filled, empathy free diatribes typify the the American Right in every respect. My only regret right now is that there is no god to sentence you and your ilk to eternal torment in a pit of burning sulfur while watching the total destruction of all your progeny in HD from afar.
