Illinois Governor Calls on Burris to Resign
ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Ferdous Al-Faruque report:
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) is calling on fellow Democrat Roland Burris to resign from the U.S. Senate seat once filled by President Barack Obama.
"I would ask my good friend Sen. Roland Burris . . . to step aside and resign from his office," said Quinn. "Let’s put this behind us."
Quinn, who made his comments at a Friday news conference in Chicago, said the controversy surrounding Burris’ appointment has cast a shadow over his service in the U.S. Senate.
In addition to calling on Burris to resign, Quinn announced his support for state legislation which would require future U.S. Senate vacancies in Illinois to be filled by special election rather than by gubernatorial appointment.
The special election bill backed by Quinn is sponsored by state Rep. Jack Franks (D), according to Quinn spokesperson Libby White.
Burris was appointed to the seat he currently fills by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat who was later impeached and removed from office.
Burris initially said he had no discussions with the ousted governor about favors in exchange for the appointment. He later acknowledged, however, that he did discuss the vacant seat with Blagojevich associates. Burris says he was asked to raise money for the former governor but could not find anyone willing to contribute.
The Illinois Republican Party welcomed Quinn’s call for Burris to
resign and challenged the governor to lean on the Democratic leaders of
the state’s legislature.
Quinn may have his work cut out for him.
Reached by ABC News, a spokesperson for Illinois House Speaker Michael
Madigan expressed concerns about the costs associated with filling
Senate seats by special election rather than by gubernatorial
appointment.
"How do you pay for it?" asked Madigan spokesman Steve Brown. "It has
worked for 180 years, why change now? Nobody’s shown how to pay for it."
ABC News’ Jonathan Karl contributed to this report.

Why don’t we ask all the Democrats around the country to resign.
Just look at what this Do Nothing Democrat Congress has done with our economy since taking over responsibility for it over two years ago.
And let’s ask the Dems historical corrupt “ENBLERS” in our liberal fascist MSM wolfpack press to resign, too.
Time to bring FACTS and TRUTH back to America.
Can’t do it with these two corrupt American institutions…….

I am a Dem and Obama voter and agree that Burris needs to step down. He can take Pelosi with him also. Im not going to defend politicians within my party just because they are Dem also. That is what is wrong with the Country. Most put party first. Burris has zero trust now and needs to go away.

Yea cd, lets turn the country back over the the party that started all the trouble in the first place. The Repulicans caused the housing crises, lied and spent a trillion dollars in Iraq, with no weapons of mass destruction to be found, why? because Bush lied to the American people and sent our women and men to war for revenge and oil. This current crises is a Republican creation, are those the Facts and Truth your talking about you dumb ass

Not all Dems and not all Reps are bad, things need to be handled on a case by case bases. I am a Dem and could care less what party is in majority. Its beyond Dem or Republican. Looks ate todays DOW. We are not heading in the right direction and all this partisan fighting is just dragging us down further. I like Obama and still believe he was a much better choice than Palin/McCain. However Obama needs to realize that preception to Americans mean a lot when it comes to the economy. He needs to start talking optimism and quit hyping on the negitivity. If people perceive its getting better or have some hope they may start spending and that in itself would turn the economy. As long as our President and our wonderful media keep talking about nothing but bad things we will continue to slide.

Burris needs to resign now! But, about the RACE CARD. When racism is obvious as seen in the double standards and weak logic from BHO’s critics, we shouldn’t ignore it. Nixon brought us the ideology of “benign neglect” concerning race in America. Many people loved it but the effects are still with us today. Obama’s speech on race in Philadelphia is well worth re-reading (see AmericanRhetoric.Com)

Burris won’t resign. If he had any sense of honor and morality, he never would have lied about trying to help Blago with fund raising and accepted the seat. He will drag this as far as possible and the only way to get him out of the seat is to impeach him or wait until the next election.

allen ridge:”Just look at what this Do Nothing Democrat Congress has done with our economy since taking over responsibility for it over two years ago.

Facts and Truth? How about the FACT that when Democrats took over the Senate, the number of successful filibusters increased by 150% and the total number of filibusters increased by over 90%. This FACT is a historic, never before seen levels of obstructionism.
The “do nothing Congress” was unable to overcome Republican obstructionism (over 110 filibusters in the 110th session alone!), and the few times they did Bush vetoed it.
And today no one even expects an up or down vote – it was assumed from day one the stimulus bill needed 60 votes to pass because the Republicans filibuster just about everything…

Burris will end up resigning. The Democratic Senate is ashamed of him and so are the Democratic Senators and Governor in his own state. Just because someone is of the same party, it doesn’t mean they always think exactly the same. If Quinn was Lt. Gov. it doesn’t mean he and Blago thought alike. Democrats are individuals, unlike the Rethugs who wouldn’t dare get out of lockstep with their party membership for fear of being dismembered (probably in more ways than one!!).

Jason is correct. We did not go into Iraq because it was the biggest threat facing out nation: we went there because Bush had already decided long before he was even elected that he was going to go topple the guy who tried to kill his daddy because “daddy” reneged on an illegal deal over stolen Kuwaiti oil. Georgie turned away from the REAL threat facing America and the world, and let Osama bin Laden slip away into the night to further spread his deadly gospel of hate – fueled by Bush’s own excesses in Iraq.
Bush also “declared” a recession in the middle of a historic budget surplus before he even took office! The current fiscal crisis was caused as much by Bush’s deficit spending to the tune of nearly $5 TRILLION as by any other cause: the biggest bailout / stimulus estimates to date are still no match for the bills Bush ran up on the National Visa Card while in office! What Bush set out to do from the start, he certainly accomplished in the end: “Mission Accomplished!”
Unfortunately, these Republican apologists will never willingly receive the truth of these matters, for like aging rock-stars, they have deafened their ears on the cacophony of lies, rationalizations and outright hate speech spewing from the electronically-amplified mouths of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill Kristol and other subscribers to the doctrine of American supremacy through deceitful oligarchy and postured bullying. They are all followers of shameless false messiahs.

jhw539: I might add to your post that Bush also exercised his right, more than any other President, in the use of “executive signing statements” to change or negate anything Congress did that he didn’t like. Over 180 executive signing statements either altering or negating the intent of laws altogether. Bush didn’t need a Congress, he wrote his own laws.

Jordon, you seem slightly more informed than your “other brother Daryl”(Jason). I believe if put down the dictionary and check your history facts, you would see that it was your previous “perfect” commander Slick Willy that let Osama bin Laden slip away. Which probably would have avoided the WTC disaster. But he was slightly distracted I guess. At least GWB made an attempt to get him. Where by the way do you get these facts you are spewing, or do you just make them up as you go along? You want to talk about affect on the ecomomy? Have you seen the direction of the Dow Jones, since it was thought likely that Obama would become president? Down Down Down. Even more so since the announcement of his brilliant porkulous package. Oh yeah, and how about the Mortgage bailout? Great idea for those of us responsible borrowers to pay for the mistakes of the greedy less intelligent ones. Let them loose there homes. That is how the system is supposed to work. What happened to being responsible for your own actions? I’m sure our grandchildren and great grandchildren will look back on this administration and say thank you for the debt they were left to pay as they struggle themselves to succeed. I believe they will remember this presidency as “historic” for many different reasons than it should be.

mjr – your can’t be serious. It was the banks themselves offering money to people who couldn’t afford the mortgages, then after getting their share of money, they just turned around and sold the bad mortages. It wasn’t “pressure” from the Dems. that made the banks do this. Since when would the banks take any orders from the Dems, especially since Dems weren’t in charge during the Bush Administration. Banks are all run by Republican fatcats anyway. Furthermore, I haven’t heard any bank use this as an excuse as to why this country is in the mess we are in. It’s you Bushites who want to believe that. And you actually think Bush sent us into Iraq to “free” that country from the tyrant, Saddam? You think he and Cheney cared about the Iraqi people? Come on!! Of course this War was about the oil – the third largest reserve in the Middle East. Cheney’s oil buddies like Halliburton egged them on to go to War. We all know it. Dozens of books have been written about this War. Read a few and get educated about the truth!!

Burris did not commit any crimes or lie outright, he just was not as honest and forthcoming as he could and should have been. Yet, that is enough for the Democrats to call for his resignation. Not being honest and forthcoming was one of the hallmarks and guiding principles of the republicans over the last 8 years as they have brought America to near financial ruin.

Did Republicans force banks to loan to much money to people that could not afford it? NO. Did Reps force irresponsible people to run up their debt? No. Did Reps force corporations to WAY overpay their executives and give them lavish bonuses that the company could not afford? No. Did Reps sell secrets to China? No. Did Reps raise taxes on US companies so that it would be more cost effective to move jobs oversees? No. Is it the Reps that want to give amnesty to all the “undocumented citizens” (illegals) that snuck into OUR country and are here taking jobs from actual tax paying AMERICAN citizens albiet for substandard wages, because companies take advantage of their illegal status and fear? NO!!!!!!!!
Stop the insanity!!

Jesus Warrior – Corrupt Chicago politics “reached Washington” on January 20th when Obama swore in. But to get back to the issue, I’ll bet the democrats lose Burris’ seat in the special election that will follow Burris’ ousting. From what I’ve read heard from Chicagoans and people from Illinois in general lately. They are getting sick and tired of democratic politics and politicians. Me sees “the political winds in Chicago going in an ugly direction”. I suppose that means, as Obama has stated in his book, that he will now go and stand with his muslim brothers. What a friggin’ joke the messiah has turned out to be. As if we didn’t see this coming.

Is this Blagojevich 2.0? Senator Roland Burris deliberately misled us in regard to his involvement with Blagojevich and like Blagojevich refused to acknowledge what he had done wrong when he was caught.
Why did both Blagojevich and Burris think that they could get away with their deceptions and lies? Why the brazen effort to try and retain their positions of power?
What does this do to the confidence of voters in the political system and the government to see such open and unashamed attempts to gain personal advantage from public service?

The Governor needs to resign! Hecht ALL the politicians from Chicago should resign. Starting all over again maybe a good thing — just think about it. (New Blood) will make this country feel so much better about Chicago. I say replace them all with republicans — and we will sit back to see what happens.
Going once, going twice, better take this advice.

And you Libs thought Halliburton was a scam. by the way, they just got $343,000,000 from the government. The Democrats party, this Democrats party, makes the republicans look like penny candy thieves

He needs to step down! I am a Democrat and when he was asked the question before he was put into the seat he lied. Now the truth comes out? He needs to go!

Burris should resign. He is a liar and for lying Nixon had to resign and Clinton was almost impeached but then GW Bush lied about Iraq and was left in office to screw this country beyond believe.By the way to you all the reason we attacked Iraq was not to save anybody but because GW Bush could not accept the humiliation that the face of his father was painted in the floor at the entrances of Sadam Hussein palaces and everybody had to spit on it.The last two wars was started by Texans:Vietnam by LBJ and Iraq by GW Bush.To republicans and texans, american young peoples lives are inmaterial to their pride. Also, remember Burris is black and so nothing is going to happen to him.Now where are the black “leaders” about this situation.Hey Sharpner,J. Jackson, etc… speak up BROS.

Isn’t it possible that Mr. Burris is an innocent victim, considered guilty in the minds of the public only by his association with Blago who has yet to be convicted of any wrongdoing? The larger issue is the knowledge that so many politicians have hidden skeletons in their closets, and yet have blatantly betrayed the public’s trust. It’s a sad testament to the lack of integrity, morals and ethics of our elected officials nationwide. Worse is that it has reached epidemic proportions at all levels causing Americans to shake their heads in disbelief in the shame of it all.

For this guy, Burris, to endure what he has in order to get that Senate seat and keep it, you can just imagine how valuable it is. These people will do anything to reap the perks and power of these so-called “jobs”.
