Las Vegas Mayor to Obama: ‘Your Comments are Harmful’ to the City

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: In a two-page letter to President Obama, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman backed off statements made Tuesday that he would like an apology for comments made by the president earlier in the week about Las Vegas.

During an Indiana town Hall meeting this week, Obama complained that companies that received bailout money should not take trips to Las Vegas or the Super Bowl at taxpayers’ expense.

Rather, the mayor describes in the letter how harmful he sees the president’s comments are in feeding the "unjustified” stereotypes of his city.

"Mr. President, I understand the enormous burden you carry in dealing with the worst economy since the Great Depression,” Goodman writes. “I also understand the need for accountability, but your comments are harmful to the meetings and convention industry as a whole and Las Vegas specifically."

Goodman said that his city hosts 22,000 meetings and six million business travelers annually for an economic impact of $8.5 billion.

“The assumption that all meetings, event and incentive travel are wasteful is wrong. Now more than ever, we need businesses to ravel and hold meetings and events. As we move forward, I would caution all federally elected officials to use temperance in their comments. Failure to deed the principles will damage an entire industry, and select cities, causing people to lose their jobs and homes,” he wrote.

Ending the letter, Goodman asked for Obama to refrain from calling out individual cities or destinations.

“That serves no purpose and only reinforces outdated stereotypes. Yes, we need accountability, but we also need some balance in the discussion.”

Did Obama happen to CRITICIZE the House Democrats for their recent luxury week-end — paid by us taxpayers — at the Kingsmill Resort & Spa in Williamsburg, Va.?
Or did Obama mention that he (Obama) felt compelled to fly down — on the very-expensive-to-operate Air Force One — to speak to those tax-spending Democrats?
No?
No, I didn’t think so.

The Mayor is a buffoon. The President was specifically referring to Companies receiving bail out funds. This voter absolutely agrees Companies getting bailed out have NO business holding junkets with taxpayer money bet it in Las Vegas or anywhere else. Too damn bad if that hurts biz in Vegas.

Yolonda: “He is trying to cleanup the mess the Republicans made along with your precious Palin.”
Be realistic – Palin hasn’t *done* anything, which is why thinking women were so aghast at her being compared to Senator Clinton. Seriously, Palin’s record consists of How Not to Develop a Town in Wasilla, selling the state jet, and a pipeline that may be built in a few decades (that isn’t supported by the main gas companies in the fields and that had a really sketchy proposal process). She’s certainly not to blame for any of this.

Right, because paying for Amtrak fare to a $119 a night “luxury resort” located a couple hours from the office is JUST THE SAME as flying hundreds of miles to Las Vegas’s casino strip. This sort of mindless equivalency is why Republicans have been such abject failures at leadership. Think!

What we have here is a failure of the President to speak in a manner that idiots and morons can understand. He uses full sentences that are grammatically correct. By doing so he literally loses a full 75% of the public that is used to hearing nothing but a series of grunts from the podium at the White House. The mayor of Las Vegas like others on the right deliberately misinterpret the President’s intent to stir up their hillbilly, backwater base of Bible banging, gun-toting follows who are to ingnorant to understand that they are the pawns of corporate powers that pull the strings of the Republican puppets in office.

Dear “Ryan C”:
“Members of Congress were quick to shame corporate executives for over-the-top extravagance during the economic crisis, flying private jets and taking luxury junkets. But some lawmakers are strolling fancy resorts spending tens of thousands of TAXPAYER DOLLARS and mingling with lobbyists.”
“Democrats spend taxpayer money on their retreat but do not permit lobbyists to accompany them. The PUBLIC PAYS for a charter train from Washington to Williamsburg for many of the 200 members who attend, as well as conference rooms, security and catering.”
And the public definitely pays for Obama’s use of Air Force One to go to these taxpayer-funded extravaganzas.

This is ridiculous. This mayor is an idiot. If he had said partying in England, like the execs from AIG were, would the Prince say, “Hey, that will affect tourism.” Any execs who party anywhere on tax dollars after asking for a bailout should be ashamed. Anywhere. Obama didn’t say people shouldn’t party in Vegas. Just companies that really have no business doing that with our tax dollars. I think this mayor did more damage speaking up than shutting up, in my opinion.

Mr. Green, the bailout bill which the bankers used for the money to go to Vegas was written by democrats not by President Bush. Also the rules under which the banks got into this situation were sponsered by democrats starting under Carter. Now instead of spending money that could add to the econemy they add a big part which wont even start in the first two years. The democrats added money that they know that they could not get passed on its own if they tried.

I don’t care about Air Force One, but I do care about 1 trillion taxpayer dollars. I don’t want to see our country go through the same thing Japan went through in the 90′s. They kept printing money until they owed three times their national income. They just got out of it after ten years of depression. Spending printed money is not the answer anymore then Government jobs. The economy is what’s bad and that’s what we need to fix, that takes premanent jobs so people can spend money they know they can replace. Not temporay jobs that are gone in 6 months until we print more money and hand it out.

Let them complain. If they weren’t whining about a modest working weekend trip, they’d notice that Congress meets in a lavish domed building located in a prime down town location that, if Congress wasn’t so egotistical, would be rented out for weddings and office parties.
They would bitterly bemoan the cost of Portapotties if Congress started meeting in a parking lot… As my toddler daughter has taught me, sometimes throwing a fit IS the only cause.

HOWEVER, the fact that companies are overspending taxpayer dollars by going there and not properly cutting back is wrong, unethical, and hopefully one day illegal. I had to look twice. Is this the Fox Channel web site??
1. While I don’t personally agree with the bailout, Obama’s 900 billion certainly can’t do any less good than W’s 700 billion. Where did it go? what did it do? How many jobs were saved? Are you now able to get a loan any easier than you could in November. 700 billion. Flushed down the toilet. Gone.
2. You claim that Obama has a really odd compilation of friends. Welfare recipients and billionaire bankers??? Must make for odd parties at the Obama house.
3. I’ve been to Kingsmill in Williamsburg in the dead of winter. It ain’t no picnic. It sure ain’t the Bellagio.
4. Other than the Virginia Lottery, there’s no gambling in Williamsburg. And I’m pretty sure all the hookers fly south for the winter.
5. Umm hello. He flies on Air Force One. He’s the President. It’s what he does.
You people need to get a grip. Give the man a chance, if he screws up, you can always run around chanting “told you so, told you so”. Even so, no matter what he does or how bad he is. Even if we out do Cuba as far as Communism, it can’t be as bad as the last 8 years.
W fact of the day. Did you know the last president spent more than 2 1/2 of his 8 years in office ON VACATION?? Look it up. Between Texas and Camp David, the man spent 977 days between the two places!! The average American won’t get that much vacation during their lifetime let alone in just 8 years. How can somebody work so little and screw up so much??

I will concur with the posters who wish to give Obama the latitude to succeed but I certainly would hope that he ceases to ‘preach the impending implosion’ of our nation and the continual ‘gloom and doom’ scenario.
As a boy of 7 in 1938 I picked green string beans for a penny a pound all day long to fill a ‘gunney sack’ with 100 pounds so I could make a dollar to help my Dad and Mother and my siblings to survive.
Let me assure you, and any and all posters, this so-called recession is not nearly as severe as it was in ’36-’37-’38.
For cripes sake, let’s quit moaning and groaning as if the end of the world hase come. It hasn’t and it won’t unless you believe the ‘ever lying politicians’ in Washington. This entire ‘bailout’ stimulus is nothing more than a giant step toward total governmental socialism. Keep this simple fact in mind:
THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT GIVE ANYTHING TO ANYONE FOR NOTHING. ALL THEY DO IS RETURN ONLY A VERY SMALL PORTION OF WHAT THEY TAKE FROM YOU EACH AND EVERYDAY.
You young people, your children and your grandchildren, are going to be paying for this debacle for years to come. This is nothing more than a joint foulup by both the Dems and Repubs but you are never going to hear a politician accept blame for anything that goes wrong.
All they do in Washington is ‘print new money’ and history has proven that you can’t spend your way out of debt. They are nothing more than ‘mental midgets’ and that includes the ‘financial wizzards’ that run the banks and won’t lend you any money if you truly need it.
The entire situation stinks to high heaven.

the Japanese experience did not work because their economy is very different from ours.
Our economy is driven by the consumer but the Japanes economy is nothing close to that. In this hard times it is only government that can afford to spend and so thats the best way forward.

Oh please…Our new president hasn’t even been in office 2 months, and has inherited an enormous, nearly unprecedented economic challenge, and this stupid, myopic criticism coming from the LV mayor is ridiculous. The point is, private (non-government) enterprises have asked for taxpayer money, claiming they need it to survive. We as taxpayers are not normally obligated to fund these companies. Since we are agreeing to bail them out, it’s logical that our president (and many taxpayers) would view expensive retreats and big bonuses as inappropriate, wasteful expenditures by companies claiming to be on the edge of ruin. Big bonuses are payment for great performance and shouldn’t be paid to company officers when a company is asking for a bailout. I am self-employed, and if I have a good year, I take a big vacation–and if I have a bad year, I don’t expect to still take a big vacation and buy a new wardrobe. It seems that Obama expects accountability and responsibility if he’s promising private companies taxpayer’s money–and I have no complaints about that. These are for many people disastrous economic times. I hope the LV mayor can stop being so short-sighted and wake up to that fact, and the bigger message–You don’t carry on with business as usual, big spending as usual when you are asking for public assistance, whether you are an individual or a company.

(1) Even popular presidents are accountable for their words; let each judge for herself the merit of the statement and the corresponding complaint without emotion. (2) Overstatement in pursuit of persuasion may come to be Obama’s signature; he would not be the first politicion to sacrifice accuracy for political utility. (3) Why is Tapper’s lead to the story the notion that the mayor backed down? Sounds like the clear intent of his comments are to express criticism, for whatever it’s worth.

Oops. Seems that link doesn’t work.
“On March 3, 2005, Goodman was speaking before a group of fourth-graders at Jo Mackey Elementary School. When asked what he would bring if marooned on a desert island, the mayor replied “a showgirl and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin.” Further, when asked about his hobbies, the mayor named drinking Bombay Sapphire Gin as a favorite. Later, when asked to comment, Goodman was unapologetic: “I’m the George Washington of mayors. I can’t tell a lie. If they didn’t want the answer, the kid shouldn’t have asked the question.” This caused an uproar from parents whose children heard the remark, and school officials said the remark was inappropriate.”

Health care provisions should NOT be part of the stimulus legislation. We need to think long and hard about such changes and not be threatened with catastrophe so as to scare us into making decisions that will cause the DEATHS OF AMERICANS.
Yes, I am indeed shouting at the top of my lungs.
People will die under this stimulus bill that otherwise would have lived.

Anyone following the news is aware that Wells Fargo was allocated $25 Billion as part of the recent financial bailout. So it should come as no surprise that tax payers would be angry that Wells Fargo planned to use part of the money for a Las Vegas junket.
The Mayor of Las Vegas received free publicity today by pretending that Vegas was on a list of places to avoid under any circumstances. Shame on him.

it is not a “luxury resort and spa” my parents income has never exceeded 70 000
in a year combined
when you say luxury resort and spa I imagine something outside of a construction workers price range
the resort is nice don’t get me wrong
but its a pile of condos with a small clubhouse where you can play pool and a pool where you can play swimming
as far as I know there is no spa but I haven’t been there in a couple years.
when I say condos I hope you picture hotel rooms cause thats what ours was like when we went

too silly for Tapper’s time – maybe the Mayor’s the only one in the country who hasn’t seen the City’s ads?! Make a joke of your city for $, take the joke when it’s on you! And how silly are the anti-Obama people here, really, you thought a worldwide economic meltdown caused by 30 years of anti-tax idiots would really be fixed in 3 weeks? If you want Palin, move to Alaska – largest black hole of federal $ in the country. Please, Tapper, get serious – 200 schools blown up in Pakistan, 3 govt. bldgs blownup in Kabul, worldwide economic meltdown and ABC just wants to relive the election so the delusional GOP can lose again?

What the mayor doesn’t seem to realize is that when these bank executives go on a junket to Las Vegas, they stay in the penthouses at the most expensive hotels with all the luxuries money can buy. It isn’t a 3-day weekend economy deal most people go on. To use the taxpayers money to wine and dine themselves in luxury playgrounds while they are laying off employees and cutting wages is inexcuseable. The President very obviously was not referring to these people going to Vegas for business meetings but for “fun and costly games”. I think, we the people, know the difference.

“How selfish of the mayor. It doesn’t matter if thousands of families can’t buy food as long as the executives visit his city and make him and his city rich!!
There are priorities in life Mr. Mayor, and Las Vegas is not and should not be priority when families and towns are struggling. How selfish of you.”
Ironically enough, many of those suffering families are IN LAS VEGAS. Please don’t make the same mistake as some people, who forget the hundreds of thousands of Las Vegas residents, including teachers like myself, who are suffering seriously thanks to the same economic crisis as you.
Except that Las Vegas has NO state tax, so our entire education and public system depends on the tourism industry. All of it.
The Mayor is not the one who needs the money; the state does. Desperately. Please consider the many respectable people who live here, and realize that the tourists are not the one the money helps. Government workers like myself, facing a freeze in the pay system, a reduction in pay next year, and huge budget cuts, are those who suffer.
The students in Vegas will not be helped by ignorant attitudes that throw the first stone. My impoverished students are not the ones gambling; they are the ones who need the scholarships no longer available for higher education thanks to attitudes like these.

There must be 1,000 meeting rooms in Washington D.C. where the House Democrats can hold meetings to discuss the current crisis. They do NOT NEED to go to any resort — whether you think it is swanky or not.
WHY don’t the House Democrats meet in Washington where we taxpayers pay for plenty of meeting space for them? Why do you suppose they want to go to resorts to hold meetings? Are their brains more alert after a round of golf?

Posted by: dream | February 11, 2009, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

Furthermore . . .
Obama didn’t just fly in from Mars on inauguration day … he had been IN the U.S. senate for FOUR YEARS when all of this was happening … but he did NOTHING to alert others to the developing crisis or to deal with the impending “catastrophe” (as he is so wont to call it now). But Obama was silent on the crisis for all of his FOUR YEARS in the U.S. senate.
Obama didn’t want to have responsibility for anything, so he kept a low profile in the U.S. senate and did and said NOTHING.
Obama can say he inherited this mess, but he cannot say he wasn’t in a position to do anything about it — he was in the freakin’ senate for the past FOUR YEARS.
Obama has been “enabled” enough — it is time, right now, to start holding him accountable for his actions, inactions, and especially his fear-mongering and his anger at us for not bending to his will without complaint or question.

What a sensitive nation we have become! Mr. Mayor, we need jobs and our banks sound. Budgets are drained and many have no jobs left. Why do we have to holiday anywhere at this time on the tax payers back? Companies that are sound will still and have a right to visit your fine city. Companies that are on the tax payers dollar should be protecting their employees and foregoing these trips. And what is more sir, you know that!!

Posted by: Pepper | February 11, 2009, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

I don’t think President Obama meant to do any harm to the tourist industry in any city. He was just seeking to criticize those who did take the stimulus funds. The funds were supposed to go toward business that was hurting. Is a business hurting when they can take their employess on an all expense paid holiday? If the President were to say nothing people would say he wasn’t concerned. He has been in office for a very short time but, one has to admire his persistence to do what is right. How many more crooks are going to surface before this thing is over. There seems to be an “above the law” trend of thought coming from these people who received stimulus money. Did they think they were receiving a free hand out to continue in the ways that caused the problems in the first place. God bless our new President and to h– with anyone who cares to criticize. He is setting an example for us all.

And speaking of Las Vegas, what’s the point? We burn scarce and expensive gasoline from foreign sources, and light the city with electricity that could be sent to AZ or CA to eliminate more fossil fuels. All this to support an oasis of showgirls and dealers of all types. LV was borne in a time of cheap energy, environmental unawareness, and puritan standards about gambling at home. Time’s up.

My only disagreement with Obama is that if the people that take Government money shouldn’t take junkets on Taxpayer money neither should the government.

Oy, this is exactly the kind of myopia that got us into this mess in the first place. Obama didn’t say nobody should visit Vegas, just that it shouldn’t be done on a corporate junket at taxpayer expense. Mr. Mayor, head this advise: when bonehead remarks happen in Vegas, they should stay in Vegas.

Well we just lost the State Farm convention a few hours ago as well. I was a table games dealer at a major resort on the strip. I was (along with) several hundred others laid off on the 5th of January. Since then I have had to beg Citi Bank to give me a reprieve on my auto loan, stopped paying my credit card premium, and am trying to salvage my home which sits in a sea of foreclosures. My unemployment check is $295 a week, 1/4 of what I was making. I have lost health insurance as well. There are ZERO casino jobs down here right now. Thanks Obama for your wonderful comments, we appreciate it.

Posted by: laidoffdealer | February 11, 2009, 10:24 pm 10:24 pm

Unbelievable – first of all the TARP money wasn’t supposed to go to banks which needed it but rather to healthy banks to add liquidity. That was back when we thought both Citi and BofA were healthy. Wells Fargo isn’t planning trips while laying people off – as far as I have heard they haven’t been laying people off. Thirdly, the so called junket wasn’t for executives, it was for the worker-bees who man the phones in the mortgage offices and fix the computers – they earned the trip through a recognition system that has been in place within the company for 20 years and from what I’ve heard they weren’t staying in the penthouse. It’s maddening to read garbage jounalism but even more frustrating when intelligent thinking people buy into that junk. Did anyone ever tell you not to believe everything you read?

Posted by: one_cat | February 11, 2009, 11:29 pm 11:29 pm

One Cat – Because the junket wasn’t for company CEO’s still doesn’t justify the junket on taxpayer expense. The company was showing bad financial judgement for incurring that kind of expense almost immediately after the bailout, nor did it occur to anyone that they could receive scrutiny and bad publicity. A lack of regard for consequences is what caused the fall of these companies to begin with, and hopefully, shining the flashlight can help circumvent a lot of bad judgement.

Since we’re writing letters now:
Dear Mayor Goodman,
As a citizen of (insert expletive of choice here) Las Vegas who owns a home that is worth less than what I paid for it one year ago, sends my children to a struggling public school system that also is rated as one of the poorest in the country, is married to someone directly affected by the budget cuts slicing salaries up for state employees, who also works with the little guys that own businesses all over Las Vegas ( thus my business is directly affected because they are all struggling), and just happens to also pay taxes…I would just like to point out that I believe you have bigger issues concerning you besides sitting down to write a post it note, yet alone two page letters.
Obama was asking for accountability and responsibility from those standing in the bread line asking for a hand out to save their rears! (Are you really that much of an idiot, or was this just an attempt to save a burned out political career as you bide your time?)You’re not winning my vote, might I add, nor would you ever.
I work with businesses every day that can’t get the money they need to do business because the banks have all but shut down on them ( we’re talking about people with credit here!) These business owners, and the people doing business with them,( I realize this includes some of those people that are losing their jobs in the casinos) generate far more revenue for the state than any one time junket on my dime ever will.
We live here 24/7, 365 days a year. We go to movies, and bowl at those casinos because we have to, there is virtually no where else to go to engage in leisure activities. We bet on games in the sports books, drink at the bars, and eat at the restaurants. We spend money in the shops, and in the slot machines. We shop locally and put money back into the pockets of the community, as well as big business ( the kind of big business that dominates the strip) Our families and friends make up a good portion of the tourism industry when they come to visit US and throw money in both directions as well. There are nearly 2,000,000 people living and spending money in Las Vegas every day! WE bring people here. WE spend money here. WE keep this city alive, and WE will find a way to survive. It’s NOT ALL JUST CONVENTIONS! One or two big whales pales in comparison to an ocean of fish and one companies junket, or two corporate meetings here and there(when they are robbing from Peter and not paying Paul, anyway) is not going to bankrupt Las Vegas or send us into a tail spin. If this is what will be…it would have been anyway…need I go back to the whale/fish analogy for you?
Sure, it feels a bit like a rumbling empty tumble consuming itself to hear “LAS VEGAS” come out of President Obamas mouth, like the dirty word we keep asking to be…because coming out of the feast that was 2004-2006, right now it feels like barron third world desert famine, and when starving, a grain of rice seems worth fighting to death for! Really, let’s step back a moment and really assess a bad situation…because in comparison to other places in the world…we’re not that bad off just yet. ( However this kind of knee jerk reaction and failure to focus on long term solutions and the reality of the issue, will put us in more dire straits, surely) But it’s not going to fulfill the rumbling tummy, Mr. Mayor!
As far as I’m concerned Wells Fargo (or anyone else for that matter) shouldn’t be spending my money ANYWHERE (my feelings about this extend toward the government as well)! They should be working toward getting our credit lines opened back up and be responsible and accountable to “we the people” that are bailing them out…just as they ask their debtors to be responsible and accountable for monies they lend. The way I see it…THEY ARE MY DEBTOR NOW! I want an agreement for repayment, and responsibility with my collateral (taxes) just as they do, and I want consequences when they default on that agreement!
Las Vegas was in trouble long before this! Bad decisions by greedy business men/or women…and Mayor Goodman, I would say you are at the top of that list (let’s be honest with ourselves about this! We are all in the positions we’re in… mostly because we spent money we didn’t have on that in which we did not need) So what happens now? The bottom falls out and we all suffer! So what do we do? We’re going to have to tighten the buckle up a bit. Time to run a bit leaner and meaner. Excess no longer makes sense, Mayor Goodman! For me, for you, for us, for “them”! It’s global and it’s coming down on all of us from Las Vegas to small town Iowa. How selfish and narcissistic of you to fixate on and exploit the mention of our city when it was simply used as an example for a much larger principle!
Our tax dollars are being given to those who didn’t know how to handle themselves appropriately in the first place…why should I think giving them more money is going to “stimulate” the second time around, and save us all, when all it did the first time around was “enable”? I don’t! Especially when it’s being spent on EXCESS!
Let’s get to the heart of the matter and ask for your accountability and responsibility to Las Vegas’ current economic conditions. Isn’t it high time Las Vegas diversify a bit? If we fail, it’s because our leaders (you, Jim Gibbons, for example) failed by not coming up with a better plan, or asking for a better plan from it’s people, and not investing in the future of Las Vegas and Nevada, and counting on the “old stand by” to keep coming through (Two things here 1. what financial planner would ever recommend that all investment funds be dumped in stocks and expect this to yield generous returns over time? and 2. There is a little something to Darwinism and evolution that can be applied toward business and the economy). Time to focus on the real issues, and come up with solutions, rather than fixating on things that in the scheme of things are counterproductive and really don’t matter anyway. I’m tired of it and I want action! I want to see what you are going to do for us! I want to see what you’re tightening up on to ensure the future for my family…for energy, for education, for industry beyond tourism? I don’t give two squats about the fact that Obama used our cities name like it was an expletive! Because right now, Mr. Mayor…I use expletives when I talk about our city, and you, and Jim Gibbons. Shut up and do something that matters! In an effort to displace the fault, all you did was shine a big bright spotlight right back on you… Mr. Mayor…I think you owe the people of Las Vegas immediate action…

One cat-
Not for arguments sake…but just to satisfy curiousity…I googled Wells Fargo layoffs…ugh…yeah…just a few pages worth of stories talking about the number of people they have laid off and will be laying off ( mostly between Nov 08 and up through Jan so far).
I also googled State Farm…laying off as well. It’s just the trend.
A gentlemen (?) commented about his experiences during the Great Depression…he’s very right. Turn off the tv. Quit reading the paper. It’s all going to be bad news…gloom and doom. Go out and figure out what you need to do to support your families and take care of yourselves. We have certainly been in much worse circumstances.
We have turned into a nation of whino’s. We all put ourselves in this situation. Whether it be because we didn’t take responsibility for our own education and ended up working in the casinos in Las Vegas straight out of school, and somehow now believe that this is ALL we can do. ( Go back to school! What are you good at? What do you love to do? Surely you have other skills beyond just dealing a deck of cards or serving a drink?) Or we got excited at the prospect of owning that huge 4000 sq foot home that the mortgage guy told us we could afford at 1800 dollars a month ( and we either took it for granted that the market would keep climbing and stay in our favor, or just didn’t read the small print or understand what an ARM was )…okay so what…you let the house go…move into an apartment and live within your means. Reality sucks when it hits…but it has hit, people. What’s going on sucks…and if we’re foolish enough to believe that one man is the savior, or the devil and has the final executive decision…we’re all living in the dark. He’s going to do the best that he can with what the resources he has…that I believe. I think Bush did the same thing ( though I don’t think he cared as much). We can not change the larger circumstances of what governs us…but we can change how we govern our own daily existences; and this is what is going to make the difference in whether we sink further or begin to pull out of the hole. Do your part to make your life better…and don’t step on anyone while doing it…if you do the right thing, it will always be right in the end. Discipline and focus is hard, and it’s painful…but the alternative is unbearable. This is our responsibility! ( WOW how did I get off on this tangent?)

No apology required.
While business meetings are necessary, extravagant meetings in high priced venues at my (taxpayer) expense is absolutely uncalled for. Whether or not we like Mr. Obama’s stimulus package, aside. We are in this mess because we have business people spending like there’s no tomorrow, banks paying a pittance on savings accounts, lending money to people who can’t afford it by developing innovative lending tools which convolute the facts making everyone think it’s a good thing. And most of all we have us, taking every dime anyone will lend us to buy things we know we can’t afford. It’s time to pull back and live in the reality, on your own dime. Spend whatever you want, but DO NOT ask me to pay for it, today, tomorrow or next year. The bankers that met in D.C. yesterday should be fired and ashamed. The fact that neither has happened shows where their personal values and that of their companies lie.

Posted by: Jack | February 12, 2009, 12:45 pm 12:45 pm

I really can’t believe how ill-educated you people are.
Obama seems not to understand how economies work. He has certainly signed Las Vegas’ death warrant and–since he has never actually been in business himself–doesn’t understand what a conference or convention is about. I happen to have worked AT hotel properties handling the conference/convention business–and later worked WITH investment bankers who conference here. They are not at the spa, the shows, the gaming tables. They are at work–and they work very nearly 24 hours a day, even while they are here. They are now spending a lot more money in San Francisco–where room rates BURY current Las Vegas room rates. It is just these simple facts that so many of you are unfamiliar with that stuns me. Just the usual, uneducated, mantra-repeating stuff I hear from the news media. Since you have no idea what you’re talking about, I can feel pretty confident that you also voted for this irresponsible, naive boy whom you also know nothing about… stay home. Las Vegas won’t miss you.

Obama, wants to stimulate the economy and also stop people from spending money.
Mayor Goodman is a fellow democrat, and he can see the ridiculous duplicity that Obama consistently presents.
Corporations are going to continue to have corporate functions – either for planning or employee incentives. That’s a fact.
They can choose to fly from anywhere in the country to Vegas for about a hundred bucks a person and stay at the Luxor hotel on the strip for abou 60 bucks a night or they can travel to Boise Idaho (very respected serious destination)for about $300 a person and spend $120 a night at a Hampton Inn.
Which destination makes the most sense to you? Do not be duped by the “New Obama Math!”

Posted by: Big Oscar G | February 12, 2009, 2:15 pm 2:15 pm

The companies getting bailout money should be required by President Obama to hold all of their business meetings in Las Vegas, the city which is the most economical and the most conducive to holding efficient business meetings and conventions, with 130,000 hotel rooms and thousands of restaurants within a few miles of dozens of huge convention facilities and hundreds of meeting rooms. With reduced room rates because of the economy, and because Las Vegas hotels can afford to have lower room rates because of casino revenues, Las Vegas is a bargain, and Las Vegas is the only city where all corporations should be allowed to plan their meetings and conventions.
When I was delivering newspapers 35 years ago, the newspaper company had a party every year for delivery carriers and gave them free pizza and soda pop. The carriers who sold the most newspaper subscriptions were awarded prizes. The top prize was a trip to Disneyland. As a result the newspaper increased their circulation and were able to charge more for advertising. When I was an outside sales rep selling plumbing supplies to wholesalers 25 years ago, the owner of the small manufacturer rep firm that employed me, required me to take customers out to lunch every day, and we payed for lunches for engineers that did specs. That was how we made our products known to buyers, and that was the lifeblood of the company. If taxpayer money is being used to get these companies on their feet, we better hope that these companies are doing the kinds of things that attract customers and reward productive employees, or all of these companies will fail and the taxpayer money is gone. Is this still a capitalist country, or are we in Communist Cuba?

Yesterday’s comments in reference to Las Vegas was tremendously out of line. He owes Las Vegas an apology.
We are hard working individuals who rely on visitors including business people and conventions.
I understand his basis for the remark, but Las Vegas isn’t a source of wasteful spending, it is a deal closer and exibitioner of 100′s of thousand of companies that are marketing or introducing their products at meetings and conventions, which in turn create the future economy and spending.
He should concentrate on the money thrown away at “bonuses” rewarding executives for companies that are in failure, or not providing their companies with the numbers they are responsible for producing.
The money spent on bonuses should be given to charities and economic rescue packages across the country. The companies would still get a tax benefit and get rewarding publicity.

I agree with Mayor Goodman. Thank goodness he has the gumption to stand up and say what we all want to say. Thank you, Mayor Goodman, for standing up!
Our economy is an aggregate with many components depending on each other component. For example when fuel costs rose, the cost of food rose. The deplorable fear speech of our new administration is driving the businesses and citizens of our country to take drastic reactionary measures. For example the Obama “dis” on Las Vegas. When will the president exercise dignity and self-control and begin to act like the president? His inexperience shows with inept and unappropriate comments.
Nevada businesses have been on hiring freezes and now are cutting management salaries and teminating workers. A presidential comment is normally taken very seriously. Our dear president is inexperienced but charismatic. I don’t believe he intended to damage a struggling Nevada economy where foreclosures are at epic proportions. Oh,that’s right, aid and comfort will follow the catastrophic comments in the form of aid to struggling homeowners. If tourism increased, values would rise. Having help with a $200,000 mortgage on a home with an appraised value of $100,000 is just stupid. Give me bandaid when I need a tournecut. How about the $13 a week tax relief? And I can do what with that?
The housing/banking problem was created by the same legistive philosophy under Bill Clinton. Now the “change” administration can “change” problems it has created for itself. My heroes!
Still waiting for an apology. I think everyone who possibly can should head for Las Vegas now.

I am moving to Las Vegas in May of this year. I am a professional sports handicapper and have not been able to relocate there because I wanted to wait until my Son graduated from High School here in Seattle. I take great pride in what I do, but the thing I love most is making other people money. I love to see people succeed. As I expected before he was elected, this philosophy is not shared by our President or our Senate. I believe that the current President wants Americans to fail. And I truly think that he wants the people of this great nation to become solely dependent on the Government. They want to punish and condemn people who are successful. They want to squash the American dream. Our country is about opportunity, freedom and the right to create a better life for ourselves and our families. We should be able to make as much money as we want. The liberal party for some reason wants us all to believe that having too much is a bad thing. I am proud of my accomplishments and our rankings in the sports handicapping world. And I love Las Vegas and the beautiful state of Nevada.
A few years back, the state of Washington made online gaming illegal. That bill was pushed through by two of the biggest morons on the planet named Jim McDermott and our stupid Governor Christine Gregoir. They’re nothing but a couple of meddling idiots. I used to be able to make extra income from promoting online sportsbooks and other sports and leisure websites. After that bill passed, I couldn’t do any of that with my clients because of where I live. It was too risky. It suddenly became a felony to make an online wager of any kind. I decided right then and there that I was going to move to Vegas after my son graduates high school. I had falsely and prematurely assumed that I would be able to get away from this stupid, blue, liberal state I live in and use my talents down in Nevada. Now, I can see that I will not be able to escape the socialist views of our current House and Senate lineup. They’re everywhere. The Kool Aid drinking masses have been duped into voting for and believing in a false prophet. And there’s nothing that anyone can do to stop these people. Nothing. It’s too late. For all you people who fell for this, shame on you. You voted without thinking. Your blind hate for George W Bush clouded your judgment and you voted for Barack Oblahblah. How do Sarah Palin and John McCain look to you now you freaking morons? A solid, down to earth, respectable wife and mother and a true American hero who would do ANYTHING for his country! We could have had two trustworthy, steadfast, established and experienced leaders running our country. Instead, we have an arrogant, over rated, immature and inexperienced child with a deer in the headlight look. And you know the ironic thing? He just went on a vacation USING YOUR MONEY!! You idiots!! You deserve everything you get. I am moving to Las Vegas still. But I’m moving not just to pursue my dreams. I’m going to start a second business specifically designed to take Harry Reid out of office. I’m going to talk to the unions and the people who are greatly affected by Mr. Obama’s statements. I will be there to remind you why you suffered and lost your jobs going into 2010. And I will fully support and campaign for whoever Harry Greed runs against. It’s time to fight back. And Harry…you’re gonna get everything I got. Get ready pal. The fight is on.
Oh, and if God blesses me with the ability to, I will be rewarding any employees who work for my company with big bonuses and a week’s stay in Las Vegas, hopefully at a very nice hotel. And I hope that someday ALL of my clients are successful enough to buy their own private jet and experience all the good things that comes with hard work and determination. I will also be ignoring Mr. Obama’s request to not have conventions there. I am going to rent out every meeting room that I can in that great city and bring in as much income as I can to the wonderful people of Las Vegas! My goals will be to help the mayor, rather than hurt him.
I pray for those of you who are with me in this fight. May God keep your families and friends safe during these times. And I want the President, Harry Reid, Nancy Palosi and all the rest of the liberals out there to know that we will NEVER go away. The Republican party will never die. And everytime your President fails, we will be there to point it out to you. You libs have a long 4 years in front of you!
I’m just one of many people out there who are going to create a very large brick wall for you.
God Bless America.

Bryan, after reading your post, I feel a response is warranted. First of all, the President NEVER requested business not hold conventions in LV and NEVER requested people not go there. The President was saying that these banks who have come to the government asking for taxpayer money should not take taxpayer money and spend it on junkets and bonuses because that is not what that money is for. Furthermore, your overall assertions about the President are completely false, but this is America and you are entitled to your opinion. However, I think you crossed a line by saying “shame on you” to people who didn’t vote the way you believed. I would never say that to Bush voters nor think it because, again, this is America and we are allowed to disagree. I also happen to be a resident of Washington State and I didn’t agree with the law that banned internet gambling but I also recall it passed by wide margins in the statehouse with little attention paid to until after it became law (BTW: Jim McDermott is a US Congressman and would have had little to nothing to do with its passage).
Since you asked how McCain and Palin look right now, I will tell you. He is out of touch with reality (saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong the same day Lehman Bros. files for Bankruptcy) with a reputation as having a violent temper (something we REALLY don’t need right now). She is someone who thought a Canadian radio DJ was a foreign head of state until she was told the truth, implicated in a report for “abuse of office,” and not being able to answer simple questions from the press.
I wish you success in your sports handicapping business, it sounds like you are already quite good at it.

Mayor Goodman is a perfect example of the frightening immaturity of many holding office today. A childish reaction to a
comment proves it. HOW ABOUT DIVERISFYING VEGAS MORE? Do you have the brains to move the city forward or just sit and complain like an ignorant baby?
This is so obviously his version of blackmail. ‘Boo hoo, I’m gonna get something for that comment.’
WAKE UP. Businesses are shutting everywhere and cities all over are bankrupt. You and the likes of you have slurped from the easy trough for so long.
It is HIGH time people understood how wasteful gambling is and how damaging to American families.

Posted by: Jackson | May 25, 2009, 7:56 am 7:56 am

I am glad to read that some people do get it. No where did Obama say not to visit Vegas, Goodman doesn’t apparently hear very well but atleast there are those few who do. So No Obama does not owe him anything.

Posted by: Elle | May 25, 2009, 10:12 pm 10:12 pm

Well, most comments are not getting the whole picture. We all love Obama. No need to defend that. Okay???
If he can put $35,000,000 into helping black students to achieve Harvard some day, then it is not wise to hit the most repressed community in the US. Las Vegas. They have had more foreclosures and job loss than anyone in the US. It is not in the business recovery package sense to hit the most repressed that that Biden go to for support. Let’s be fair and let the Vegas community recover along with others, and they DO !! depend on their Convention money. Business’s here have closed shop. Do they not need a hand like the rest of America?

Maybe if the President would have taken care of the big boys getting big pay-off before he threw tax payer money at banks and ins companies who had not record of being good honest business men, he might not have to be defending himself now. God help us all!

1st let me start by saying people have the right to do what ever they want with their money! With that out of the way I have nop problem with Obama’s comments. It might help some people think smarter about WHAT they do with their money. If it changes a persons mind who thinks that Vegas is the answer to their finacial problems then it has done some good in my book. Tough #### to Vegas! They could care less about if a person is living on the street but if that person has a dime to spare they sure as hell want it. Greedy ########! Gambling is not the way to make money because unless you can afford to lose the money in the 1st place then you shouldn’t be gambling! If the odds were so good for people in Vegas then there would be NO VEGAS!!!

Posted by: mrjamfy | February 3, 2010, 10:25 am 10:25 am

ALL THAT NEEDS TO BE SAID IS THE MAYOR OF LAS VEGAS NEEDS TO BE OUT OF OFFICE!! Las Vegas = Corruption. This Mayor is just looking for a reason to hate Obama and we all know why. The fact that he gets upset over words that are used for the good of people should tell you what kind of man this so-called mayor is. I do not know anyone in Vegas that like this mayor except for the strippers and prostitutes that get money from him.

Posted by: Truth | February 3, 2010, 10:35 am 10:35 am

Although correct in theory, Obama shouldn’t have named Vegas. However, there’s more to do than gamble in Vegas. We have some of the best hiking in the country and you can hike year around thanks to a 10,000 foot difference in elevation. Google: hiking and las vegas

Oh, for crying out loud, somebody please tell that guy to quit whining. I don’t feel from the statement that Obama was trying to attack Vegas directly. He also made a comment about the Superbowl to and in another story he said something about buying a boat. So maybe the football players and boat salesmen should be complaining to. His point was telling people to use common sense, and think before you spend. He wasn’t telling people not to ever go to Vegas, he was simply saying have your obligations covered before you have fun! I seriously doubt Obamas comment is going to have any adverse affects on the tourism of Vegas. It might change my mind though knowing the mayor is a whiny little girl. Get over yourself.

Big Brother trying to tell you what to do! Obama want full control of our lifes!! Tell you what to do, share the wealth, what insurance you should have I can go on and on. I thought we lived in the United States of America, HOME OF THE FREE!!!!!!

I Know I will likely get blasted for saying this but I feel two things need to be pointed out. One being that love or hate him. Obama has inherited an inceredable mess and is doing his best when the president really dosen’t have the power poeple think our government is set up to pervent that. The second thing is that Vagas has pretty much set it’s self up for this, Los Vagas is know as Sin City for a reason and has only encouraged this sentiment.(What happens in Vagas, Stays in Vagas?) They should expect to be use as an example of excess.

This is the stupidest criticsm of Obama I’ve heard yet. Does the mayor or anyone else lobbing stinkbombs honestly think anyone listening to Obama’s analogy about corporations playing fast and loose with federal bailout money (and not about individuals spending their own money) thinks it was a slight at the city’s convention and tourism trade? PUH-LEEZE! Sorry Vegas, if your well-deserved reputation for corruption and sleeze is a little too uncomfortable for you to withstand criticism for, cast the blame no further than your own politicians. Maybe if you cleaned the ear blax out of your ears you could stop pretending the big bad scary black president is out to steal your stuff. Losers.

People – People – People!
What would you expect from a man that has never had a job; never had to be accountable; never was taught the meaning of honesty; cannot balance a budget; doesn’t care about his character or of his friends. Comparitavely speaking, Bumbling Biden is a gem!
Good God Youall!

Hardy har har.
He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword. President Obama’s mouth (the same thing that got him elected) is going to be his own downfall.
For all you liberal, “progressive”, chip-eating couch potatoes waiting for Obiden to bring you your rent check, you need to take into account that Obama made a similar “Vegas” reference a year ago and caused companies to move their meetings, conferences, and conventions AWAY from Vegas (which relies heavily on such business). Obama’s words are not accidental, though often misinformed and surprisingly ignorant. Do you remember the New Haven police “acting stupidly?” Do you remember, “Health care negotiations need to be on C-Span?” You liberal morons! President Bush was a mental thespian next to this elitist jamoke!
I nominate Homer Simpson as the new White House press secretary (which would be a HUGE step up from Robert Gibbs) to say “DOH!” every time Obama, Biden, or their cabinet/staff say ANYTHING on camera or on tape.
Jake Tapper, keep up the great work. You’re old school (for you liberal wackjobs, that’s a COMPLIMENT!).

Dudes! He wasn’t insulting Las Vegas! He was talking about 2 places people LIKE to go (because it is FUN), Las Vegas and the Superbowl, and how fatcats shouldn’t be using taxpayer $ to go there. (As in, a lot of hardworking people would like to go to LV or the Superbowl and can’t necessarily afford to go, or to go as often as they’d like to, so why should fatcats get to use their tax dollars to go??)

Obama had a great point when he was sayin students need to save their money, but why to mention Vegas.?? he had mentioned Las Vegas before and it sounds like he’s hating on us… thanks to his comments our hotel industry has recieved many cancelations. Microsoft was going to have a convention in this city and they cancelled it because it “looked bad” for the company. If someone is goin to spend money they will spend it even hangin out a Saturday with some friends not only in Vegas….. He is a great president, but he needs to stop usin this city to make his comparisons…

We love our mayor and our town. Mayor Goodman is right. Mr. President lay off Vegas!

Posted by: Bruce from Vegas | February 4, 2010, 10:39 pm 10:39 pm

I find it tragic in these tough economic times that as the president attempt to present sound spending judgement to the american population that the Mayor of Las Vegas turns comments into a mud slinging political circus. So much for being the bigger man, What has occurred here is nothing short of a short sided child’s tantrum. I would have been much more benificial to try a more positive attitude in order to portray Las Vegas in the positive light it deserves. Instead the Mayor has set himself as the bitter spokesperson that most will think of when they think of Vegas.
Times are tough all over the U.S. and the world. Most are struggling to make a means to support their family and their community. This includes Las Vegas, I turn around for Vegas is a win for all, a huge boost in the economy. I would like to see it booming again and represent a positive turn in our nations economy. That being said I can not be part of supporting a city that has a Mayor takeing such a negative standpoint toward our president as he attempt to guide us out of these “darker” times. I have canceled my reservations (both business and pleasure) to Vegas (next month and those trips thereafter) and decided to go to San Fran instead. When the Mayor decides to stop pouting and jump on the, “Let’s work together to get through this” bandwagon I’ll return to visiting the great city of Las Vegas. I wish all luck within the limits, I urge residents to ask the Mayor to reconsider his arrogant and short sided economic viewpoint. Vegas is part of the United States so buck up buttercup and join us in working toward a solution.
Respectfully,
~Solarn

All I have to say is that being successfull and outright stealing peoples money and going to anywhere and spending is not freedom. Its a part of blind ignorant pride that has got us in the shape we’re in. We you don’t have any regard for your fellow man because you are successful and rich you are going to pay for it in more ways than one. Think about it. Every human being should be concerned about the porr and disadvantage if you want to call yourself a human being. I know that some of us look human but on the inside their nothing but predators. If the shoe fits try a new one.

Any one with a brain can tell that this controversial “Las Vegas” comment has nothing to do with that particular city. It is only symbolic of a vacation destination. His point, which should be evident to all thinking people, is that we all need to be more prudent with how we spend our money. While passing through the Las Vegas airport a few years ago on the way to a family reunion, I met a woman in the rest room who told me she had to go back home because she had lost nearly $5,000 and she didn’t have any more money to spend on gambling. I cringed when I thought of how long it took me to save half that for my trip. This is the kind of devil-may-care attitude that is contributing to our huge personal debt and personal irresponsibility. If the President wants to remind us of being more…dare I say…conservative with our finances, I say “God bless him”.

Posted by: soldiermom | February 7, 2010, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

What the hell? He got upset over THAT?

Posted by: Jake | February 8, 2010, 12:54 pm 12:54 pm

I find if comical that one of the most fiscallly irresponble entities (the US Government) preaches fiscal responsibility to others. It’s laughable. Does the President know what our national debt is right now? There is nothing wrong with spending money, it stimulates the economy. People just need to spend withing their means and not overextend themselves.

Posted by: mary | February 18, 2010, 3:18 pm 3:18 pm

What was so hard to understand about the presidents comment? He sai that they “shouldn’t go on the taxpayers buck.”
How can you argue with that. Did you not understand the statement or are just looking to use that comment to open your rant?
