McCain Daughter to Address ‘Log Cabin’ Group
ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: John McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, 24, has agreed to headline the annual convention of the Log Cabin Republicans, a GOP group which advocates on behalf of gays and lesbians. "Her willingness to reach out to organizations like ours shows her commitment to growing the Republican Party," Log Cabin convention manager Christian Berle told ABC News. "The title of Meghan McCain’s speech is ‘Winning the Next Generation — How can the Republican Party attract more young voters.’" Joining Meghan McCain at the conference will be Steve Schmidt, her father’s top 2008 strategist. The topic of Schmidt’s address is "Moving Forward." The Log Cabin Republicans are scheduled to meet in Washington, D.C., on April 17th at a time when the GOP is seeking to rebound from an election which left the party out of power on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. In addition to Meghan McCain and Schmidt, the Log Cabin Republicans will also hear from former New Jersey Gov. Christie Todd Whitman (R), who will discuss her work with the moderate Republican Leadership Council, and former Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., who will share his perspective as a former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Michael Steele, the newly elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, has also been invited to address the Log Cabin Republicans. He has not yet, however, committed to speak. The Log Cabin convention is being held in conjunction with the Liberty Education Forum National Symposium. The registration fee for the conference is $395 per person.

Meghan is a swell girl but take it from a proud Gay American…she is not going to be successful recruiting us to the HATE Party anytime in the forseeable future. How many Long Cabin members are there left in the GOP ?? 25-50 ???

given obama’s double faced treatment of Gays, all Gays and Lesbians should be looking for a new political home.

I’m sorry but I did not know that Meghan McCain was seeking or currently holds public office. I thought the Log Cabin Republicans were interested in policy not just smoozing with the daughter of an angry and defeated John McCain.

Oh, this is rich. “Log Cabin Republicans: doing what we can to halt the LG movement through self deception and hatred”. Really. Any gay or lesbian who belongs to the LCR truly must suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. And you f’rs welcome a MCCAIN???

The Log Cabin Republicans are an oxymoron (with a emphacist on moron). Talk about the ultimate form of self-denial and self-hate. It’s like African Americans supporting the Klu Klux Klan – absolutely ridiculous.
And Megan McCain is the new advocate for gay people in the Republican Party – what a joke!
Also, they might get Michael Steele to consider speaking at the event, but I will bet you a dollar he is one “hetero who ain’t feel’n the whole homo thing” – Yep, I’ll bet ya whole dollar!

well … on the upside at least she and her Mother may get better clothes and make up advice than they have been getting. Then again – Gay Republicans is such an oxymoron that they may have NO fashion sense themselves!!!

While the GOP may be at odds with LGBTs at the present time, the whole purpose of the Log Cabins is to get the GOP to re-evaluate their stance. Just because you are gay does not mean you are a liberal or a Democrat. I don’t think Log Cabins are self-loathers.
That being said, do I think they have much chance of succeeding in changing the Republican platform? No. But here’s to hoping

She must have been inspired by the ganglia of Repub women, Sarah Palin. Oh well, she probably knows how to cheat the taxpayers out of their savings like her ‘good ole dad’, wear a hero halo and have best bud’s like Phil Gramm, the #2 on the ripoff scheme of shameful greedy Americans that caused a collapse in the housing market. Since when did welfare reform help only the rich that lost money?

My Gaydar says Michael Steele would secretly LOVE to hang with us gayers but is afraid the GOP might not understand….hehehehe

Please, CPC. An old, tired, lame argument that stopped washing years ago. Although, geez, the repubs are now bandying about to the ‘hip’ aerosmith tune “Back in the saddle”, so what would I know??? Hmmm, maybe “Bareback in the saddle again”? Mayhap this rebranding thing will be interesting to watch after all…

caad4-
Perhaps you might explain your argument next time rather than merely asserting it. I understand where you are coming from–I am a liberal gay man and would never join the GOP, but I am not liberal because I am gay. The two are different and there are plenty of proud gay men and women who share many Republican political beliefs (pro-life, anti-taxes, etc.) I just wish the Republican party would drop the stone-age act and then maybe more gays would consider voting GOP

CPC, they (republicans) can’t drop the stone age “act” because it is part and parcel of who they are. They’ve never been on the progressive, healthy side of most important issues (civil rights, anti war – - and the huge cost to society and especially taxpayers). They’ve mostly been mouthing ancient platitudes that no one lives by or believes in anymore, or that never existed (ie, the lovely, perfect 50′s depiction of life) while behaving in a corrupt, authoritarian way. They actively seek to bastardize the Constitution and grossly extend the powers of public office all in the name of achieving a one party dictatorial establshment. I also am not liberal because I’m a lesbian. But I cannot fathom that someone on our side of the fence would willingly adopt the party that has pandered to those who would hurt us most. I believe in fiscal responsibility, smaller government (and obviously it would need to be more efficient as such) but those are not mutually exclusive to basic civil, human rights or a progressive mentality.

Why did Sarah Palin charge rape victims for their exams while mayor of Wasilla?
Why does Sarah Palin think that gays can be cured?
Why did Sarah Palin hire a lobbyist to secure 27 million in earmarks while mayor of Wasilla and then leave the city 20 million in debt?
And what about that eminent domain lawsuit?
Why did Sarah Palin send a lovey dovey video to a secessionist group who’s founder hates America?
Why did Sarah Palin support the bridge to nowhere until it became a national embarrassment? And why did she keep the earmark if she did not support the project?
Why did the RNC have to send a lawyer to Alaska to retrieve the schwag her and her family tried to steal?
Why did she lie about the RNC having to send a lawyer?
Why do her fellow Republicans call her w a c k j o b and diva? Reagan’s 11th commandment anyone?

yawn….
So they send a little birdy to talk to them. It still wont change all the BS they have done to GLBT over the years

Sarah Palin should be there.

If conservatives honestly want to welcome GLBT into their party, then how about sending a significant party member to speak on behalf of the GOP and not the daughter of…John McCain. Why not John himself? Really, who in their right mind would fall for this?

The GOP is full of delusional interest groups who go around hoping the party will change and welcome them. There are gay repubs, environmentalist repubs, black repubs, Latino repubs, pro-choice repubs. While members of each group may have some conservative leanings, the GOP is really a white hetero backlash movement. Sad.

this is funny — i got stuck with a log cabin nut on thanksgiving. he was very nice (i think he wanted in my pants) until he said something about “the messiah” that obviously didn’t sit well with me and he knew there was no going back. its just their nature to be offensive — like any other repugnut. i was really more amused over him bringing a shiraz to go with turkey

Oh please….
The only interest Republicans have in seeing Meghan McCain is because they want to give her a log. Kind of like most of the GOP male’s reasons for their fervent support of Palin.

According to Chuck Todd’s new book, “How Barack Obama won…”, Obama received 62% of voters who did NOT describe themselves as evangelicals. Moreover, Obama won the 18-29 cohort by 66-32%. The die has been cast by the GOP’s conscious decision to exploit and embrace issues like Terry Schiavo, stem cells, creationism, abortion, immigration, denial of climate change etc. The fact is that the younger generation does not have the bigoted views regarding gay people that their parents and grandparents generations held. Moreover, the aforementioned issues also alienate educated people of ALL cohorts, as evidenced by the fact that Obama won 10 of 10 of the states with the highest % of educated voters. The GOP made their bed and now they are going to have to lie in it.

When I read this story, I had to smile and think, Is this obvious or what?
As I went to comment, I can see that others see the very same thing!
Those rascally Republicans, it’s funny in a very sad kind of way…

Are these people “confused or what”. Republicans will use anybody or anything to continue their hate mongering. We’re not fooled.

That is so courageous of Meghan McCain, and it shows her commitment to reaching out and growing the Republican Party by making it more inclusive. She is an extraordinary young woman, so creative and articulate. She clearly has a bright future ahead of her.
