McCain: “Obama’s ‘New Politics’ Off to a Bad Start”

ABC News’ Tahman Bradley reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called Democrats’ shepherding of the economic recovery bill a "bad beginning" for President Obama’s promise of a new kind of politics in Washington. "It was a bad beginning because it wasn’t what we promised the American people," McCain said Sunday on the CNN program "State of the Union." McCain contends that Republicans were shut out of the legislative process by Democrats in Congress, who, he says, loaded the $787 billion stimulus with projects that won’t create jobs. "This bill was not bipartisan. It is incredibly expensive. It has hundreds of billions of dollars in projects which will not yield jobs." McCain said his ’08 White House rival had broken a promise to govern in a bipartisan fashion. "Candidate Obama said that these conferences would be open to the public. Said that the American people would have five days to view [legislation] on the Internet. There [were] commitments made that certainly aren’t being kept now." McCain also said there’s a lesson for President Obama in the string of Cabinet nominees who were forced to withdraw: look for people who are not part of the Washington elite. He said, "What I would have done — and I hate to keep saying it that way — is get outside of the Beltway. Get outside of Washington. Get people who have succeeded. Get the Meg Whitmans, and the Carly Fiorinas, and the Fred Smiths, and the John Chamberses. Get people who haven’t been inside the Beltway, who haven’t been part of the incestuous relationship that have caused the special interest and the national interest to somehow be distorted to a degree that the American people have lost confidence in what we do in Washington."

SO now the republicans are fiscal conservatives. The only republican that continuously stood against the excessive spending when the republicans were in power was Ron Paul. Now the rest are fiscal conservatives. Oh brother. McCain needs to learn that wars have price tags, and singing about bombing Iran ruins his fiscal credibility. I will agree with hi here that Obama’s spending plans are a disaster, but the only guy that had it right, Ron Paul, was laughed at so we get what we deserve.

After the comments of McCain and Graham, it would seem the Republicans expected bipartisanship to mean that the democrats would let them walk all over them. Wake up, guys, it’s the democrats that won the election, and that the people want to govern.

TELL ME WHAT DOES A BILLION DOLLARS GOING TO BUREAU OF CENSUS HAVE TO DO WITH STIMULATING THE ECONOMY? AND PELOSI’S PET PROJECT?

Mc Cain is a psychotic old snake in the grass. Always smiling and giving lip service to “working with Democrats” or all of that BS about “reaching across the aisle.” He only fools the fools. He’s a nasty, evil Republican loser and will help sabotage everything our new President puts forth.
Republicans will lose in 2010 for being isolationist PIGS. Right now we need politicians to work with out leader, and as usual we get Ann Colter, Rush Limbaugh(he’s SO 1980′s!) and the others out front trying to tear down everything….remember, they are just actors. You too, O’Reily!

Most of the comments being made by the now minority party show their utter lack of concern for our country. It seems the Republican party is now the pary of obstructionists. They say they had a plan that would create jobs and stimulate the economy for 440 billion. So according to them Obamas plan is wasting 390 billion of taxpayers money. How much has the Iraq War cost US tax payers? I now view the Repbulican party as a bunch of terrorists. One of the main things Bin Laden wanted to accomplish when he attacked American was to weaken our financial system. The Repbulicans have done a better job of that then Bin Laden did.

Let’s not forget that almost half of the people, mostly non-urban people, did not want the Democrats to win. They still deserve a voice in the govt. That’s the way we do things in America.
Obama needs to earn some credit. So far, he’s the same old Democrat buy voters machine. The “stimulus” plan proves it. I was hoping for better from him, but expecting what’s happening.
Rich and big business provide lots and lots of jobs. DUH! This class warfare talk is destructive and meaningless. Ignorant, too. There’s nothing wrong in doing well. Ask the Obamas.
It seems like Democrats expect Republicans to roll over. That isn’t healthy for the nation. Debate is good. Remember? Hillary said so.

John McCain is an angry old man who needs to retire from politics altogether. We had enough of him during the election, if people wanted him in office, they would have voted for him. Both parties need to pull togethe and make this work instead of the Republicans hoping it will not work–we listened to them for 8 years and see how we have ended up!! Democrats in office will not stand by and watch the Republicans take over, like they want. They just make me sick–Lindsey Graham, against the Stimulus, but will sure be one of the first in line to grab some money!! Same with the rest of the Republicans!! Let President Obama work it his way and see what happens, instead of being so negative about everything!!

McCain is spewing too much B.S. for a man that doesn’t know how many houses he owns. You really have to wonder if they honestly think Americans take them serious anymore. At least President Obama keeps in touch with the people. McCain and his group are so far removed from mainstream America that they seem extremely ignorant.

McCain is right. Obama broke his campaign promises…”Candidate Obama said that these conferences would be open to the public. Said that the American people would have five days to view [legislation] on the Internet.” The meetings were closed door meetings. The people weren’t given any time to review the bill. Obama is a joke.

McCain is an idiot! Someone please tell him that the election is over. He needs to soak his dentures get him a good stiff drink and come to reality. Soon…very soon he will see what a out of touch old spiteful person he is. He still thinks he has a voice. Sad!…very sad! By this summer the Rep will have put their collective foot in thier mouths when the economy starts to rebound.

Time will bring up to light the wasteful reality of this “stimulus” bill. The only “stimulus” is stimulating the unions that filed behing the flaming and shining NEW president, who truly is new in everything related to administering the government. PLEASE, the guy is just a smart, well educated, community organizer, with very leftist views. We’re now seeing it. These leftist actions are taking us in the same decline that the USSR, who had to leave its fatherly government policies. Shame on all these politicians who are draggin this country to the ground and putting us ALL on debt, even those of us who did not splurge in the expensive big houses

Posted by: AGT-R | February 15, 2009, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm

I am still amazed at how the Republicans (politicians and voters) gave George W. Bush 8 years to screw up this Country, and now they want President Obama to straighten it out in 3 or 4 weeks! This stimulus plan may not work – but I have heard any of the Republicans standing up saying WHAT WILL WORK! So, Republicans – if you don’t have a better idea(s), then shut up! Time will tell if this Stimulus Plan works – the President said ‘it is going to get worse before it gets better’, and that I do believe. There is no overnight solution to this mess.

Oh brother. Republicans never quit playing bipartisanship, never quit playing politics as usual, have been proven wrong, they’re hypocrits to the core. They’re bald faced liars. They don’t want to see Obama succeed, that’s what its about, and it wouldn’t have mattered what the bill was and it wouldn’t of matter what Democrat was president. They’re full of crap, and that’s why they’re out of office. They don’t want to save the country. They dont give damn. I’m fully completely convinced of it.

I find it amazing that when Bush/Paulson wanted Congress to approve the $750 billion TARP funds in a matter of ONE week, McSane “suspended” his campaign to vote YES! I don’t recall any resistance from him or the GOP.
In the past 8 years, the GOP could’ve cared less about the American people and now all of a sudden they do….YEAH, RIGHT!!!
McSane, the election is over…now you need to give it a rest and stop being such a sore loser. It would bring him and the GOP no greater pleasure than to see Obama fail….truly sad old men!!!

I neither voted for one or the other but I must say that like Bush is hated so will Obama by the end of his term.We have borrow this trillion dollar bill from China, UAE and others. Our children will pay with interests. It will amount to over $360,000.00 per woman, children and men in the good ol USA.This was in my opinion a plan that will drive the last stake in the heart of America. If a few years I will say ” I told you !!! “

I lost all respect for John McCain when he chose Sarah Palin for his running mate. He did it only for his own personal gain, not the good of the country. If spending 5 years in prison makes you a hero then we have plenty of them out there. He has lost all self respect not by crying like a 3 tear old that cannot get his way.

As long as the Rep disagree with it then you know you are doing the right thing. They are self serving and not for all the people. Its good for them to voice their opinions. That way we have a early warning to go the other way. McCain said from his own lips that he was not knowledgeable about the economy and that his main strength was foreign policy. Turns out it’s neither. He needs to shut up as does D Cheney and go spend some of his wife’s millions while vacationing at one of his 7 homes if he can remember where they are. Poor fellow!….. PTSD

So, why this “Stimulus” legislation wasn’t put on the Internet for 5 days as Obama promised? Two reasons: 1) More and more folks were opposing this massive waste of money, and 2) Pelosi has to leave for France. Most of you guys were bought at $8/ week or about a buck a day to support this nonsense. This certainly makes you much smarter and progressive than Republicans. How pathetic! During his press conference Mr. Obama told us about a broad support from economists and the business leaders. How about naming at least a few of those economists with reputable names? Look at Dow Jones over the last week and read the Wall Street Journal. Which economy Mr. Obama is trying to save? Whatever you say guys, the Main Street cannot work without the Wall Street. Just swim 80 miles south of Key West and see for yourself.

The GOP hates that someone is finally in office that will and is making America become what is has been telling the world that is for hundreds of years “A free and fair democratic society”. They fear that the have nots quality of life will improve and they won’t feel as superior with respect to those that struggle to surive in our country. The middle class and poor will never again let the arrogant GOP insurgency rear it’s head again. We are on our way from being controlled by other nations who use oil to control us. It will be a long process but we will prevail. The GOP and special interest days of filling their pockets with oil money are coming to a close. It’s real simple – there seem to be two different kinds of people: those who NEED government and those who DON’T NEED government. Government is important as far as protecting our liberties, national defense, and providing infrastructure – beyond that government is NOT necessary; a free society can creatively come up with its own solutions. What I don’t appreciate is the financial irresponsibility of those who NEED government which ruin it for those of us who have survived well enough without them (and for those of you NEEDY folks who must think I’m rich, I’m not – I’m a middle class citizen who believes in self-reliance and the American spirit of independence; I also didn’t vote for Obama or McCain – I don’t even like McCain).

As far as those that Need and don’t Need government I agree except for one thing. That only works when you have honest people in a society. But when have those that have gained wealth on the backs of those that built our country with the bare hands using their money to line the pockets of those that make our laws and regulations to further their needs and increase their wealth then I have a problem with that. By the way I am a middle class American also who is not hurt by this down turn but that doesn’t mean I am blind to what is going on around me. We are where we are because of those few greedy who are not satisfied with just being millionares. They want to be Zillionares. The only way to control greedy dishonest people is with “regulation”.

Obama doesn’t need experience in everything. He needs to be intelligent enough to liste to the wealth of experience he has put around him and make the right decision. He is a lot smarter than the guy that spent the last 8 years struggling with our economy. The man is smart and someone that gets it. Oil is our worst enemy in many ways. Obama is putting us on the path to change this and the GOP is crying foul because their wealth is tied to Oil. We need to control our own country not have smaller countries with oil manipulating us like puppets. Time for change we can believe in.

Evidently Harvard teaches economics whereby if one has debt which is too high they should borrow more to get in better shape????? This is highly intellegent. We should all start living like this! Evidently if we all do this we can make the economy better quicker–?

Now those that are dishonest are whinning because what they did in the dark is coming to light and they can’t stands it! Every day more and more corruption is coming to light on the Dem and Rep side. I like this! Maybe it will make everyone look over there shoulder and force more people to start doing the right thing. Johnny: Now where exactly is the video where Pres. Obama walks on water???????

Posted by: Lizzie | February 15, 2009, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

Is anyone else puzzled as to what exactly is the Republicans end game here? They are crowing about their unanimous opposition to a stimulus package the majority of Americans are in favor of, their only alternative is completely made up of tax cuts with no infrastructure development and they are staring down the last 8-years of abject failure in their core fiscal tenet of “trickle down economics”.
I for one am quite happy the Republicans are so unified in their delusion. I say keep at it, pour it on, promote Limbaugh as your mouthpiece, Palin as your centerpiece and McConnell and Kantor as your “heads of state”. In another 2 to 4 years, the Republicans will become a 3rd rate party, akin to the Greens or Libertarians – and I say good riddance.
But besides that, besides hoping for their oblivion, I’m genuinely puzzled as to what exactly they are aiming for here – if the stimulus is successful, and it will be, they will once again be on the wrong side of history. Keynes notes you could bury government money in the sand and up would spring a lucrative commercial sand excavating market.
The Repubs are only listening to their few remaining constituents, the southern, white, Christian, male vote. Here’s hoping they never catch on.

McCain and the Republicans are the ones that are not being bi-partisan. First of all they told their people to say no while the President was on his way to talk to them about the stimulus. If the Repubs truly wanted to show that they were bi-partisan, they would have waited until after meeting with the President and then telling their people to vote no.

Here’s an interesting statistical exercise, if your a stats nerd like me that is.
Go unto the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics website and download the non-farm payroll stats for the last 40 years (yes it is actually there).
No take those stats and line them up by President, starting with Nixon/Ford, all the way through W.
What you will find is the aggregate number of jobs created over a President’s administration.
Now take that number and account for population growth by dividing it out by month, starting with 100k in the Nixon admin up to 140k in the W admin, going up 5k for each 4 year term.
What your left with is a percentage of job creation above the natural population curve (directionally correct at least).
Do you know what the findings state? Carter grew the labor force by 98%, Clinton by 85%, Reagan (your Hero Repubs) by 40%, Nixon/Ford by 16% with the Bushies contracting the labor market by an alarming 57% and 78% (holy cow), respectively.
Over 28 years of Republican administration, the job market shrank by 20%, over 12 years of Democratic administration, the job market grew by 90%.
If you believe, as I do, it’s all about jobs, and that middle class and lower class jobs (the majority of the non-farm pay roll numbers) power the 75% of the economy that is consumer spending…well then folks, it’s says the Republican brand of smaller government (except when they grow it), tax cuts (for the wealthy) and fiscal responsibility (except for their creating 95% of the national debt) is horrible governance…
Of course they are saved by their international policy, oh…wait a minute, I take that back.
Vote Republican, because in 70 years you won’t be here, so why bother?

Hey Lizzie,
My stats for majority support for the stimulus, come from this article, with it’s attached references.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/opinion/15rich.html?_r=1
I’m taking a chance that you’re actually literate, but what the heck!
I’ll lift some copy for you from the article too (just don’t report my to the NY Times), let me try to anticipate your MSM argument coming next.
“…This barrage did shave a few points off the stimulus’s popularity in polls, but its approval rating still remained above 50 percent in all (Gallup, CNN, Pew, CBS) but one of them (Rasmussen, the sole poll the G.O.P. cites). Perhaps the stimulus held its own because the public, in defiance of Washington’s condescending assumption, was smart enough to figure out that the government can’t create jobs without spending and that Bush-era Republicans have no moral authority to lecture about deficits. Some Americans may even have ancestors saved from penury by the New Deal…”

Umm Lizzie, oh Lizzie, where oh where is your retort?
Facts can be a stubborn thing I know, but surely you have http://www.rushlimbaugh.com open in another browser to grab some talking points off of???
Call me disappointed, let’s reconnect in 2 years (or 4) and test your “eat your words theory”.
Would you like me to find the article stating that only 5 states are now solidly Republican? Let me guess, you live in one of those fly-over states.
Did you leave to go shuck corn? To use the outhouse?
What gives?

I never thought I would enjoy watching the news about an airplane crash. But the Lord works in mysterious ways, and with a sense of humor!
First: No one died!
Second: The passengers standing on the wing appeared to be walking on water!
Third: It removed Obama from the headlines for 24 hours!
Fourth: No one in the government could take credit for the miracle! and
Fifth: It wasn’t George Bush’s fault!

Obama’s stealing the census from Congress has suddenly awakened and enraged the Republicans. Maybe this will arouse them as well to challenge Obama for stealing the Presidency itself. They surely know he is not an Article 2 “natural born citizen” (which is more than merely being a 14th Amendment “citizen”) by virtue of either Obama’s birth to a dad of Kenyan/British citizenship or birth in Kenya itself — as manifested by his unwillingness to supply his long form birth certificate now under seal.

Posted by: Ted | February 15, 2009, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm

McCain is right.
he did loose. but he is right about Obama. Obama has had a rocky start. why would he want to burden us with this stimulus bill?
someone tell me how 30 million for Pelosi’s mice is consdider acceptable? 30 million could go towards heating homes for the poorest family.
600 for new government cars, what is wrong with the current one? or why not use amtrak? after all we are spending like a billion dollars on amtrak. imgaine if they had taken out that 600 for new cars and used it on repairing bridges?
money for Global warming? what global warming? it is a controversal issue, not everyone believes it is true and polling shows that it is the least of america’s concern at the moment. so they could had used that money on something else, like road repiars in major city.
McCain is right, Obama is off to a rocky start.
hotair.com has avideo of Obama’s promise to have a 5 day wait period before signing any bills (he broke that with SCHIP-which by the way, will go to fund illegal children not just american kids.). obama promised to go thru it line for line before he signed it, and he has yet to do this so far, he has had 2 vacations and 1 escape. i would like to see him explain to us why spending 30 million dollars on mice is more important than heating homes for the poorest family, or fixing roads (that wold create more jobs right there).

It is free and when it runs out of energy I don’t think we will have much need for it anyway…know what I mean…. we’ll be gone to. Just think where our nation would be right now if we powered our country mostly with the sun and wind. We would not be controlled or owned by other nations as has and is happening today. If nothing else Obama recognizes that and is trying to make a change but the Rebs make so much money via oil they don’t want to let go. Yes it will be painful but we need to start trying to get ownership of our contry back from those that choose to do us harm. If that means I have to pay a more taxes so be it. American should be owned by Americans not others. Change you can believe in!

The one thing the Democrats do best is spend so… obama called this a spending bill and it is, so why would the Republicans want anything to do with it. The Republicans wanted stimulus which is what they do best, and this isn’t it, even by obama’s own admission.

Posted by: bljack | February 15, 2009, 6:18 pm 6:18 pm

How conveniently John McCain forget Bush and Cheney’s Iraq war that cost us 1.5 trillion or more when all costs are going to be added up. President Obama’s stimulus program is 500 billion dollars less than Bush and Cheney’s spent in Iraq! We never saw Sen. Lindsey Graham jumping up and down and pirouetting on the US Senate floor protesting for that kind of self-destructive pork. The same goes for John McCain, who’s jumping up and down like screaming most illogical and absurd things. Other Republican leaders like Kantor, Boehner, Kyle, and Mitch McConnell were no better. Playing the same old wasted, tried and proven wrong, dead Republican politics. As usual they are misleading American people; they are pretending to safe guard public money and interested. They conveniently forget they are the ones who got us to this situation in the first place, that requires this kind of drastic measures. These Republicans are an insult to the intelligence American public, besides they go as far as to propose the same fail policies. When you think how badly Republicans have mismanaged America is truly heartbreaking. But John McCain goes on TV mouthing the same nonsense that George Bush did, for eight years. Republicans are so struck in the past like John McCain isn’t smart enough to understand he has to move beyond the conservative mantra of “Tax Cuts” “Small Government” “No Regulation” “Let Marketplace Decides…” I can understand, a man like John McCain who doesn’t know how to use a computer, can he really understand what future holds for America. John McCain’s type of politics is over for good. The debate and the experiment have been ended. Americans have the proof of such policies and practice. They have discarded it. All that dogma belongs to the ash-heap of history. Fairly and squarely it is obvious Republicans are holding America from going forward by their narrow-minded, provincial and past-based politics. If Republicans refuse to change and adopt themselves to suit America’s future they will be left behind. And that’s already happening!

Posted by: charleschaplin | February 15, 2009, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

McCain is a true fiscal conservative he would never have voted for it. It’s philosophically opposed to all he stands for. I think that’s probably true for most true Republicans. Only Democrats could spend this much money without a blink of an eye.

McCain doen’t know anything about economics…only how to marry someone that does know a something about it. Markets can have all the confidence it wants and people can have all the trust they want but if people don’t have jobs none of it matters. Jobs first and credit are first priority of equal value. Foreclosures are second. If you don’t have a job and no credit then you can’t get a loan to get a house anyway so bottom line is jobs create cosumeres with money to spend and off we go. McCain has a credit card with a $20,000.00 credit limit. His wife worth $115 million plus has two kids with American Express Cards with unlimited charge limit. Show how much faith she has in his fiscal abilities. Wake up and smell the coffee….

Yes because we want government to be just like American Idol. I support the stimulus, but I’m not wasting my time hanging on the phone. We just voted a couple of months ago and the stimulus position then was very clearly stated and basically what got through. I think a national vote that Obama won in a historic landslide trumps the rabid fringe of either side banging on the phones.

Posted by: jhw539 | February 15, 2009, 7:22 pm 7:22 pm

It isn’t even debateable that Obama is off to a bad start. He has had four cabinet nominees withdraw. He has destroyed any hope of bipartisanship with his “I won” comments. And worst, he has passed a stimulus bill that will harm our economy with really no Republican support so he and his party will take all of the blame for the economic failure. Compared to Clinton, Obama shows that he is very inexperienced.

Posted by: Alicia | February 15, 2009, 7:36 pm 7:36 pm

Obama is getting himself into trouble with deficit spending. We currently owe 2.5 Trillion dollars to the Chinese. If they decide to pull that money out our economy will collapse. Every time we add to the debt we are moving one step closer to this economic collapse. Why should foreigners continue to by our government bonds when our government is spending and printing money? This will cause massive inflation, think triple digit or more. Inflation will make those government bonds worth significantly less than the Chinese paid for them, resulting in a rush to dump them. If Obama continues to spend as he has so far our economy has no hope. Our money will be worthless.
The collpase of our economy will be the legacy of Obama and the Democrats.

Y’all are funny. Some mention “the big picture”, but don’t frame it in any context. Others hammer out statistics which structure the past, but do not predict the future, especially during these unusual times.
My observation is that too many of you are still looking forward to change, seemingly totally unaware of or misjudging the importance of the MASSIVE changes that has ALREADY occurred. Like Hillary and the Republicans you’ll wait for it to slap you in the face before you will give it credence. Fortunately for us, my favorite self-quote applies here: “The universe does not wait for acceptance or approval. What is, is.”
The only way to ride a wave is to see or sense it coming and get out in front of it. Otherwise it washes right over you and you get left behind. The Republicans are trying to pretend the wave of change never happened and are floundering around attempting business usual. A pity; the emperor has new clothes, a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

i know this might be alittle off the point, but wanted to see what everyone opinion is on nationalizing healthcare.
According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.” [...]
The goal, Daschle’s book explained, is to slow the development and use of new medications and technologies because they are driving up costs. He praises Europeans for being more willing to accept “hopeless diagnoses” and “forgo experimental treatments,” and he chastises Americans for expecting too much from the health-care system.
Daschle says health-care reform “will not be pain free.” Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.
there is close to 500 pages in that stimulus that is about healtcare and this is what we will be looking at.
i can tell you, this is not going to workl. i already see it with medicare and medicaid. i work as a case manager and my job is to make appointments for my clients to see their doctor..last week one of my client was released from the hospital after being there for a week and was told he needed to see a GI specialist. i called the number that was given to me by the hospital and was told that i had to call the clinic that accepts medicaid/medicare only.. i called the clinic and they told me that they don’t ahve any appointments until July, and i would have to call in april to schedule an appt for july.

Where were you guys when GWB spent 11 tillion during his two adminstrations. Look where that go us! Obama has only been in office three weeks and all of you Rep are crying like little babies that have had their pacifier taken. Stop comparing Obama to other presidents. Obama is Obama and that is who he will be. You even complain because he doesn’t wear a jacket in the white house. It’s his home now and he is in charge. Like he said “he won” and if you don’t like it “tough s—!” All you guys are doing is making it worse for you when his policies start working. As I predicted months ago Obama will get the ball rolling and in 2012 he will win by an even larger margin. I also predict more members of the GOP will seek counseling in 2012.

Iran still shouts, “death to America” on a daily basis.
EU threaten to sanction America with the “buy American” provision in the stimulus.
Obama broke his promise to allow a 5 day wait period before signing anything (SCHIP) and now this stimulus on tuesday.
we are still hoping that he will CHANGE

Unlike that meaningless mob chant “Pork!”, earmark actually has a set definition. And no, there are no earmarks in the stimulus bill last I heard.

An ANONYMOUS GOP STAFFER claims that some agency will spend $30 million on this project if they get funding from this bill. There is NOTHING IN THE BILL about the salt marsh mice – this whole accusation is based on an anonymous rumor. The right wing is gullible as ever I guess.

Millions to save some marsh or field mouse? = a Pelosi earmark.
Millions (or billions) for Reid’s LA to Sin City Rail pet project = earmark

THAT IS NOT IN THE BILL – SHOW ME THE LINE. It is not defined, it is a rumor from an un-named GOP staffer who said they heard an unamed agency would fund an unnamed project if they got funding. First off, YOU’RE LYING TO SAY IT IS IN THE BILL. Second off, if it is not defined specifically in the bill ITS NOT AN EARMARK BY DEFINITION.
Do you always support your opinions with fantasy?

Obama will put bills on the web but right now getting the economy back up is more important. No one has time for you Rep to him and haw for weeks and months and then say ok. You just want to waste time and then say ok when it is too late and then say the I told you so. Obama is not falling for it. Your ploys worked in the past but not any more. He has only been in office for three weeks and aleady you Reb are complaining about where is the peace. Bush spent 8 years screwing it up and you want results in three weeks. Give me a break! There has already been a change in their attitudes towards America. Holbrooke and Clinton are already at work and soon you shall seen a different attitude towards the U.S. It’s amazing how much patience Rep have with the own but when a Dem is in office they loose all rationale or maybe SOME of them never had any. Most Rep are patient and giving him time to work but there are those that think outside the relm of reality. I think we should give Obama 8 years like we gave Bush. That’s only fair right?

sorry, but when he made a big speech on transparency he blew it when he signed the SCHIP in law within 2 days (breaking his 5 days rule) and now on tuesday he is signing the stimulus bill. oh and he promised to read it line by line with us before signing anything. he has people he needs to pay off (unions, Acorn, CEOS) so he is in a bit of a rush to get this done and over with. we are just holding him to the same accountability you held Bush. it’s gonna be a long or short 4 years, depends on how you look at it.

I answered your question: THERE IS NO $30 MILLION IN THE BILL FOR SALT MARSH MICE. The bill is publicly available online – why are you lying about this? You cannot cite the portion of the bill it is in because it’s not in there. If you’re not a liar, why can’t you tell me where it is – surely Hannity or Rush has been trumpeting the line and quote for days by now.

Hate for you to hear it from me but Bush had no accountability so I didn’t hold him accountable. That’s why we don’t know where the first 350 billion of the TARP is now. As I stated but I guess you can’t comprehend the first time. “HE DOES NOT HAVE TIME AT THIS MOMENT TO GO THROUGH THE WAIT GAME YOU REP LIKE TO PLAY. HAVEN’T YOU KNOTICED WE ARE IN RECESSION AND THE ECONOMY IS SPIRILING OUT OF CONTROL” It takes time to implement programs and trust me when he is finished with the White House it will not look the same. You didn’t judge Bush for 8 years even though he spent 11 trillion dollars and already you are judging Obama after 3 weeks but after reading your last post it is obvious as to why. Your reference to ACORN shows that you probably have shotgun hanging in the back window of your pickup next to the confederate flag. House Republicans are challenging Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claim that the massive stimulus spending bill contains no pet projects after uncovering in the bill more than $30 million for wetlands conservation in her San Francisco Bay area district, including work she previously championed to protect the salt marsh harvest mouse.
“This sounds like spending projects that have been supported by a certain powerful Democrat in the past,” said Michael Steel, spokesman for House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican.

McCain is a bitter loser. He expressed his support for an alternative to the stimulus bill that passed congress–a $2.5 trillion tax cut plan–that, yes, would have created more debt than the stimulus plan and would have left us with nothing to show for it but more riches for the likes of the McCains.
He really should just stay in Arizona and be quiet. I am thankful every single day that we didn’t end up with him as president.

Aw, come on for heaven’s sake! 26 days in office. Do you REALLY expect the world to change overnight? These power players have held sway over the masses for 200 years here and for thousands of years in other parts of the world. You don’t have a grasp on their makeup if you think they are just going to fold their tents and ride off into the sunset of history. President Obama has no illusions about this. He is braced for the long struggle, but he has to have his supporters’ reality-based thinking and patience. He can not do it alone. The democrats can not do it alone. The power he has wielded is the power of the people united against the power players of the Republican party. If your tolerance for another human’s misery is high enough you too could qualify to be Republican.
The words and actions of some people here remind me of the fact that, when the law of the land released the slaves from bondage, some of them refused to leave the plantation.
The BIG question in my mind is, “How can anyone with a 100+ IQ still be listening to AND believing the Republicans?” Remember: even a broken clock is right twice a day!!

(It’s actually reasonable that wetlands restoration for flood control, to prevent erosion in a very urbanized area, and to improve aquatic industry would be in the stimulus bill as a longterm investment in infrastructure, but since you’ve proven yourself a liar I just don’t believe you without an actual citation and line number I can verify.)

Um, I am using FACTS. You are using insults and insinuation (the lobbyist read it – another unfounded rumor from an anonymous GOP aide who over heard it in the hall that you take as gospel truth?). And the historic majority of people who voted for Obama aren’t so simple as to require everything to be a zero tolerance black or white answer – Obama is unquestionably improving transparency and honestly in the Whitehouse (his very first executive order is a fact that he has returned some transparency to the Whitehouse), but it will take years to assess if he is succeeding or failing.

McCain has not been outside of the beltway in so long, maybe he does not understand the will of the people! He and Graham can’t find a way to help the American middle class because they are so busy “carrying water” for the rich and ultra rich.
Robbing America of family wage jobs while taking a budget surplus to the largest deficit was done by the Republicans using completely non-partisan techniques. It is now time they sample a slice of pasture pie.

Billions for unemployment and food stamps? None of that creates jobs. Unemployment and food stamps continue the lazy left ideology of paying useless people to sit on their back sides and suck air.
All those who jump up and down and call McCain names,… you’re the ones who need to go away. We must invest in the future of our country. Why? Because you unthinking morons continued to elect people who skimmed off the cream of this country into their own pockets. Now we are bankrupt and our infrastructure is failing. I BLAME YOU!

Hey all you foolish liberal clones….
Why didnt all those democrats who claim they are so concerned with the American worker add 9 Billion to that huge Pork Pie for the continuation of the F-22 Raptor????
There was a simple, straight forward appropriation that could have “saved” almost 100,000 jobs!
No, instead it was more important to hold closed door meetings and create a bill that is over 2 reams of paper!!!
So much for the liberal BS of caring about the welfare of the workers!

WASHINGTON – Just days after Americans honored the 200th anniversary of his birth, 65 historians ranked Abraham Lincoln as the best U.S. president.
Former President George W. Bush, who left office last month, was ranked 36th out of the 42 men who had been chief executive by the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by the cable channel C-SPAN.
Bush scored lowest in international relations, where he was ranked 41st, and in economic management, where he was ranked 40th. His highest ranking, 24th, was in the category of pursuing equal justice for all. He was ranked 25th in crisis leadership and vision and agenda setting. McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. It’s really stunning that President Obama hasn’t been in office for a month yet and the Republicans, specifically, McCain, is telling us all that Obama is failing. Do the Repubs think that by saying this over and over again, it will become true? There can be no bipartisanship if the Repubs are only interested in taking their ball home and refuse to play. I know both sides will have a difference of opinion but the Repubs sound like they are whining. We’ve just been through 8 years of Republicans running things badly so unless they have some very constructive, helpful critiquing of what’s going on, then those Repubs, especially the losing McCain, need to take a silent back seat.

The spendulas bill grew so fat because O wants to ensure he takes control of all 57 states. If we only had…say… 50 states it would probably be a little smaller.

” If Republican politicians are so deeply opposed to President Obama’s economic recovery plan, they should refuse to take the money… If cutting taxes for the rich and for big corporations and promoting foreign trade alone could energize the economy, we wouldn’t be in this mess. But maybe S.C. Gov. Sanford is right. Let’s keep our federal money — give it to states where the governors will actually put it to good use. ”

I’m not sure anyone has mentioned the fact that contrary to what McCain said, the ARRA legislation (stimulus plan) is posted on the net in accordance with what President Obama promised. It is accessible via the whitehouse.gov site, under economy. I think to give McCain the benefit of the doubt may be appropriate: given his computer illiteracy, he would probably have no clue how to find even whitehouse.gov on the net.

No diect soultions , just pile and pile of money with obscure language about how to actually use it. No language on HOW to implement oversight!
But its ok to just spend spend spend at rates never before even discussed let alone implemented, because Bush had deficits!
Bush was wrong in your view, so that makes it ok for Obama & Dems to go another order of magnitude or more!

Waa waa! Cry me a river. Hypocritical Republicans need to look in the mirror before they call anyone “partisan.” They would truly rather sink the Obama administration, and this country with it, than cooperate to accomplish something positive for us. Short sighted imbeciles! They would rather fill the airways with their poisonous partisan rhetoric than to actually offer an alternative, because they have none. You’d think they would have learned something from the last couple of elections. The American people are fed up with the negativity and will vote again in 3 years.

Where’s all the talk on the buyout bill from Bush. He gave away millions, millions that paid bonuses and has no accountability. The same bill that McCain postponed his campaigne for and critized Obama for not doing the same. Both of them were wrong for approving it. I beleive that the Republicans will view every thing that Obama does as the wrong thing and will continue to divide this nation. This is a time when we need to come together to keep our country strong. There will be plenty of mistakes in this administration just as all the past administations had. This guy has been in office for just weeks….give him a chance.
Why is it that only the rich are considered presidential material anyway?
United we stand, divided we fall…just as the song says.

Whatever else can be said about the Republican Party, at one time Republicans were unquestionably a party of fiscal responsibility, run by economically sensible folks who believed in private enterprise and limited government. Today they have become a party dominated by inflexible free-market ideologues who have no idea how to run a multi-trillion dollar economy.
During the Clinton era, the US created 20 Million jobs – the Bush era created only 5 Million new jobs. If tax cuts alone actually worked, why only 5 Million new jobs? So today the US has 11.6 Million unemployed and we’ve outsourced millions of jobs. The Republican concept of “Supply Side” economics had 8 years to build a solid family wage job base. It did not work.

By the time we have to account for paying for the money we need to borrow for this the cost is in TRILLIONS, not billions.
As I have been posting here today, and NONE of you have yet to form any kind of response, WHY has Obama been sitting on the F-22 Raptor program? Continuing that program “SAVES” nearly 100,000 jobs!!
We can put together this huge pile of paper that no one know if it will work. We can spend 650,000,000 more dollar to try convince the public that the digital TV switch is going to get thrown ON in June, but we can’t allocated the money to save good payng AMERICAN jobs!!!!

Posted by: Dave | February 16, 2009, 3:37 pm 3:37 pm

Keith,
talk about A.S.S.U.M.E…..LOL
I never once said Bush was a great president, He kept the country safe after 9/11, but certainly messed up in other areas. Again you make assumptions about things you have no knowledge about!
In regards to the economic crisis, he has his share of blame to shoulder as do Democrats like Barney Frank!
I could not care less about what some group thinks of his place in history.
By the way, Lincoln was hardly the most popular president when he was assinated.
Many in the country blamed him for a horrible war. Time allowed for a much different evaluation of his presidency.
“Abraham Lincoln was nominated by the Republican Party, which was renamed the “National Union Party” for the 1864 election. Lincoln’s nomination was not unanimous, however, as 22 disgruntled opponents of Lincoln voted for Ulysses S. Grant, who was not a candidate. Seeing an opportunity to work with the War Democrats under the Union banner, the convention nominated Military-Governor Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, a War Democrat, as Lincoln’s running mate over incumbent Vice President Hannibal Hamlin and three other War Democrats – former New York Senator Daniel S. Dickinson, Buchanan cabinet member Joseph Holt and General Ben Butler”
“The 1864 election was the first time since 1812 that a presidential election took place during a war. For much of 1864, Lincoln himself believed he had little chance of being re-elected. Early on, McClellan was thought to be a heavy favorite to win the election. But McClellan’s chances of victory faded after Union victories in Georgia and Virginia, followed by the negotiated withdrawal of John C. Frémont’s Radical Republican Party candidacy.”
“President Lincoln wanted to reconcile the nation with kindness and forgiveness. He stated that the South had not really left the union, it was only some southern people who had rebelled. He wanted to settle it like a family fight. However, not all Northerners agreed with the President, many people were angry and wanted to see those responsible in the South punished. Others felt that the South had suffered enough through the war.”
Time helped everyone to understand what Lincoln’s presidency really meant. The same is true for ALL presidents!
I ‘m sure Bush will always rank low, but it is rather foolish to try to rank any presidents total achievements or failures 4 weeks after his term ends!
“As far as the F-22 no one repsonded because people of sick of war and that’s the only thing you warmongers can think of to make money and jobs. F-22 won’t make our country any better as far as the quality of life.”
So here we finally get to the meat of it all. The only jobs that count are the ones you liberals agree with or get to put your “stamp of approval ” on…
Nice to know how your now the one in charge of deciding what jobs a needed and what ones aren’t!
Find 9 billion in the pork pile right now..today, that GUARANTEES 100,000 jobs!
It should not be that hard to do, after all it is supposed to give us 3.5 million…surely you can identify a guaranteed 100,000 !!!!!!
The F-22 program’s jobs are nearly 100,000 good paying jobs. People who will spend money that will get the economy moving if they know they are secure! But just like a good little liberal robot, follow those foolish walking oders & talking points.
By the way, you might just want to check with President before you throw around “warmonger”. He still has major plans for Afghanistan.
LOL…talk about “Transparent”…LOL
keep promoting your view of what jobs are valid and which are not, the tidal wave of ’10 will wash you right out to nice lonely island….LOL
“You definately are limited in your ability to think and analyze which explains why you are a follower and not a leader. If you stop listening to Limbaugh and McSane you might learn something. You are a very ignorant person with respect to where the US needs to go in the future and what the majority of people need. You are smoking way to much weed!”
WOW….you got all the answers don’t you. Perhaps you should read a history book and stop listening to Chris Mathews & Keith Olberman.
I am not blinded by exteme partisanship the way you are. I know the country needs a solid military and the last time we listened to idiots like you, Carter had cut the b@lls off the military to the point we could not even pull off a rescue attempt of the hostages in Iran!

Posted by: Mike_C | February 16, 2009, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Mike C: Never said you like Bush or approved of him. You again missed the whole point, which was that McSane voted with Bush 90% of the time.
As far as the F-22 program sounds like you are one of those that lost your job at Boeing, etc or something of that nature. You keep harping on the point for some ignorant reason.
Not my job to figure out how the money is spent for the stimulas and you are confused if you think your opinion counts as far as that goes. Trust me nobody believes in what you think or value your opinion except yourself. If I remember you have more negative comments directed towards you than anybody else on this blog….why is that?
Finally as far as the military and Afghanistan… LOL…. I started out the military as a enlisted soldier, became an officer and eventually retired after 23+ years of service. I spent 2 years in Iraq from 04-06 and from 06 until now I have been in Kuwait supporting my fellow comrads. That being said I think I know a little about the military and the situation over here not by reading some newspaper or watching tv but having my feet on the ground in real time. FYI our country has a solid military and enough equipment and weapons to remain number 1 for the rest of your natural life but you would know that if you had a clue. We need to focus on our countries needs and those needs have nothing to do with the military. Why do you Reb keep saying that Bush kept us safe. Wrong! Nothing can stop a terrorist if and when he chooses to act. If you don’t believe that ask Timothy McVey. They have simply chosen not to attack and will at their own discretion. You are really naive if you think that. That like saying you can stop child molesters from commiting crimes…how dumb can you be?
I don’t need a history lessen on Lincoln I know what he did and why. I also know he freed the slaves so he could send them back to Africa but he did do a lot of good things for our country and by the way those stats were based on input from the whole country not one individual. That was Americas opinion as a whole.
Please continue to live in your little tunnel visioned world while the rest of us get some work done to get our country back on track. You are truly a lost soul!

Mike C: Our country needs to focus on alternative energy. Our infrastructure has suffered for to long. Our country should have a rail system much like Germany, Korea, Japan and other developed countries. We depend on cars to much for travel from major city to major city. We need de-salinization plants to convert salt water to fresh water. We need to focus on using the sun’s energy to power our cities and rail systems. It’s free energy and when the sun burns out….well I don’t think we will have much need for anything anymore. This will lead to a much better quality of life than building some damn F-22 and will create jobs for now and the future. Too many Reb like Mike C are near sited and only think of the quick buck. That kind of thinking is why we are in the situation that we are in right now. Mike C people like you are not part of the solution but part of the problem.

News flash for Billy Bob: GOP renews focus on deficit
Republicans rarely worried aloud about the deficit during the spending spree of George W. Bush’s presidency, as Bush largely ignored the mounting red ink as he waged war in Iraq and battled terrorism. Many conservative Republicans, including Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), blamed last year’s congressional and presidential losses on the lack of fiscal discipline shown by their party under Bush’s leadership. This was today news. For 8 years our money went up in smoke but how soon we forget. 750 billion in TARP, 350 billion unaccounted for with because of no oversight by right wingers who were in charge at the time, how soon we forget. – Guess they don’t get news up on Broke Back Mountian. Yeah! Yee Haaa!

Most of us still want to think of the U.S. in the best of terms — the world’s shining beacon and example for how to ensure liberty, justice and opportunity for all. But America voted for change in the last election, in case you haven’t noticed, Senator. So prepare yourself for what’s coming: nationalization of banks and other industries that are critical to our economy, or at least more government regulation and oversight; universal health care; higher taxes on the wealthiest among us, and; more spending on infrastructure and social programs like education. Read all about it at http://kgarry.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/capitalism-and-socialism-both-evil-extremes-of-economic-theory/.

I agree Ron Paul is the only true conservative who ran for Presidnet in 2008. As we consider conservatism, just this morning I watched Ron Paul state he too would have implemented a stimulus package. The difference is Ron said he would have paid for it by discontinuing the $1 trillion per year we spend overseas.

Posted by: rwrsok | February 16, 2009, 7:00 pm 7:00 pm

Regarding McCain’s opinions, he doesn’t have any credibility with me after he stumbled over so many issues in the campaign. His knowledge was disappointing considering the number of years he has been in the senate.

Again, all parties agreed a stimulus as necessary. Its the method on which they disagreed. The Republicans never said they wanted no bill at all.

I only wish none of this recovery bill money would go toward helping any right wingers. They have been nothing but scurrilous, snide and hateful and I hope and pray that they will be in economic distress themselves with nobody to help them because that is what they and their party want for the rest of the country as they act as obstructionists and hate-mongers and prevaricators against Obama who is only trying to fulfill his mandate voted in by the real Americans, that majority who want this country fixed and are tired of Republicans’ tired old dead horse mantras that put us in this hole in the first place. To those who hate America and don’t want anyone helped and their GOP representatives in Congress, I wish them nothing but hardship, no help and payback for their years of supporting George W. Bush, the loudmouths John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, John McCain, Kyl, Cornyn and all the rest of the obstructionist nay-sayers. I wish them the same as they’ve done to the rest of us as they stand in the way of fixing the mess that eight long years of GOP mismanagement has caused us.

McCain says “Get people who haven’t been inside the Beltway, who haven’t been part of the incestuous relationship that have caused the special interest and the national interest to somehow be distorted to a degree that the American people have lost confidence in what we do in Washington.”(close quote)
Oh my God, you fricking old hypocrite: just look in the mirror. You just described yourself. Why would listen to you, an old Washington insider that was key cheerleader in running up a 9 trillion dollar national debt and has stood in the way of all social progress since you’ve been in Washington these many decades. John McCain is typical of Republicans in general. They accuse others of what they themselves are the chief culprits in doing.

A few months ago he was telling us Obama was a Muslim who palled around with terrorists. Now he whines that Obama didn’t let him write the bill so it was not non-partisan. He is a grumpy old disgruntled guy who is still seething that Americans didn’t choose him.

wow….lots of blind sheep on here posting today. “we won, you lost so go away…nah nah nah nah nah nah” You sound like little kids and are obviously about as knowlegeable. Forget for one second that you voted for Obama and objectively evaluate what he said during the election and what he has done since winning. He hasn’t followed through on many of his promises and he is using fear to win support….kind of like he accused republicans of doing. Some have obviously bought his statement that our economy is comparable to the great depression despite the facts. Unemployment was more than 3x what it is now and something like 10,000 banks folded during the depression. This bill was as partisan as they come and we just borrowed over $1 Trillion(including interest) on a “stimulus bill” that is largely intended to increase government spending and control. The same wasteful gov’t that got us in this mess in the first place. People borrowing money they couldn’t repay is what got us here and now our gov’t is doing the same thing on a massive scale to fix the problem!?…so please forget what party you belong to for a minute and think for yourselves for once!

billybob…good post …but apparently the deadbeats on this blog are people who want you to work to take your money, want the government to solve their problems…and hate America and anybody who disagrees with them…you can’t even hold a logical debate because they will call you names…they are the problem in America they’re just too stupid to understand it… so now watch how they will get violent and call me names after this post

hey t…I guess in your world two wrongs make a right… bush added 5trillion so that justifies us adding 10 trillion….learn to think before you speak because you sound like a child

I could never understand how Hitler was able to get people to do the horrendous things he ordered until this year. Now, im not trying to in any way say Obama would commit the kinds of atrocities the Nazi’s did, but I find it rather amazing what an eloquent speaker can convince people to do. Many people are so enamored with President Obama that they don’t bother to question anything he says or does….which is very scary to me! I hope this doesn’t continue bc many of his ideas and policies are extremely radical and could cause some serious damage to the country as we know it.

At least Obama is an eloquent speaker. Look what Bush got everybody to bite off on and he couldn’t even speak properly. At least this president has an IQ that is measurable. Reb call it bi-partisan when you do everything their way and non-partisan when they can’t have their way. They have been whinning since Obama started his campaign and contiplating suicide since Nov 4th. You Rep need to get a grip and accept the fact that you lost because Americans choose a new direction. I suggest you go read a book called “Who moved the cheese”. It’s a short read so even Billy Bob will be able to read it and if he can’t understand it phillysmart do me the honor and explain it to him. Six months from now it may finally sink in that you Rep lost and your bellies full of crow. Your days of corruption, making and passing laws to favor your agenda are over for good. No longer will the people put of with your s—. The sooner you guys come to grip with this the sooner you can began your healing process. Maybe Limbaugh will overdose on his percocet and tell all his followers to jump of a cliff….hmmmm!

McCain: glad to hear you didn’t die from the campaign but sorry to hear that you spew the same old tired crap. You lost, therefore you are a loser. No need to remind us by whining and complaining. Just shut up, loser, and go away.

Poor John McCain: Unless Obama adopts the Republican platform he will not find
anything good on what Obama does. Why
doesn’t he just scream like his intellectual mentor Rush and pray for Obama “to fail.” Sad that he hasn’t seen that his relevancy has passed him.
If you want to help the country and clean the mess that GW left sell some of your properties and send the proceeds
to the US Treasury.

Okay, has any posting here actually read the bill? If so, I think it will be eye-opening to many. I was deeply disappointed that so little of it will go to improving the infra-structure and most will go to Congressional pet projects. Updating infra-structure would at least give the American people some return on investment (and remember, this is our tax dollars here)as the country would become more efficient and productive. But many of the projects in the bill focus on just bettering a Congressman’s standing with his/her electorate, and will not benefit the nation. I am disillusioned with Obama so far, as he campaigned with the promise of a strong economic plan, but to date, that plan has been to allow Congress to develop their plan. This is not good leadership from the Executive Branch. However, Obama does have know well how to manage the image and the direction of the news releases. I fear his lack of government experience is starting to become evident.
