Michael Steele: Money for Sister a ‘Legitimate Transaction’

During our exclusive "This Week" interview with Michael Steele, the newly elected Republican National Committee chairman, Steele lashed out at yesterday’s Washington Post article.

The Post reported Steele’s 2006 Senate campaign finance chairman has told federal prosecutors that Steele arranged for his 2006 Senate campaign to pay a defunct company run by his sister for services that were never rendered.

"It’s not true," Steele told me on "This Week" Sunday.

"Those allegations were leveled by a convicted felon who was trying to get a reduced sentence on his conviction," Steele said. "The reality of it is that the US attorney, as well as the judge, looked at what he presented and it did not apply. He said there was no credibility to it."

Steele said, "the Washington Post ought to be ashamed of itself for getting out in front of something without all of the facts."

Steele said he gave the Washington Post documentation showing the receipts that were used and applied  toward the $37,000 reimbursement.

"It was a legitimate reimbursement of expenses," Steele said. "If my sister had not been reimbursed, I and she would have been in violation of McCain-Feingold finance law."

I asked Steele about records showing that the payment was made in December of 2007 and Steele’s sister’s company had been dissolved 11 months before that.

"That I don’t know about," Steele said. "What I do know about is the fact as she understood it, the company was still in existence. Her lawyers were telling her they were in the process of dissolving the company. So at the time when the checks were written back to her to reimburse her, she just said, ‘go ahead and write the checks to the company,’ because the company had, you know, done the services that had been provided. But again, even in that instance, you can still, there are many companies that dissolve and still receive payments for services that are rendered. So that aspect for me is clarifying, again, cleared up with the lawyers, and was a legitimate transaction."

Steele said all the other allegations about financial transfers in the article were false.

"The thing about this George that is so frustrating to me, is that the Washington Post elevated this guy. And gave him credibility when no one else would. That’s disturbing. The fact is we supplied all these documents on record with the state board of elections, with the FEC, and I think if there were any funny business there in two and a half years, ’cause they audit, and Lord knows I have enough Democrats pouring through my records to, in the last few years, they would have caught that."

Steele said that federal agents have contacted her sister in the last few days, "for the purposes of closing out, closing out  this matter," he said.

"I have not been contacted by the FBI at all. And what we said to the Washington Post is ‘will you just wait? You’re getting ahead of yourselves here. You’re trying to make a story out of something that isn’t a story. We’ll provide you with the information.’"

Steele said his team faxed the Washington Post the receipts and other documentation and will take the information to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

"We’re being very proactive about this," he said, "because I’m sick and tired of this gotcha business that the Washington Post and others in the media tend to engage in. We’re getting out in front, we’re pulling all the data together. We’re going to take it to the FBI. I’m not going to wait for them to come to me. I’m going to take it to them and give them everything they think they need. And if that’s not enough we’ll give them more because I want to clear up my good name. This is not the way I intend to run the RNC with this over my head."

george, you would NEVER hammer a dem like that….don’t start losing your viewers by being too far left like the post!!!!!!!! Steele is respectable, treat him that way!!!!

George, obviously Mr. Will and Mr. Gingrich are independently wealthy, so I can understand how tax cut policy will mean a great deal of money to them. Will you ask them to explain how someone who makes 45,000 a year and would receive maybe 700.00 a year in tax relief will benefit from this. Especially since this won’t even amount to a monthly rent payment, much less a house payment. I know a lot of folks who are on this income range and are true blue republicans to the core and actually believe this rhetoric. When I probose this scenario to them, they usally either don’t respond or they look at me like I am from Mars. Maybe if maybe if Mr.’s Will and Gingrich would explain it to me, I will be able to see where I have so completely missed the boat.
Thanks,
Dennis

Steele said construction jobs were endpoints. So were many business jobs endpoints. The “smart” ones took the money and ran and left the businesses and the people in the dust. What we need are honest people who think of others. I would rather have a hard- working honest person than a “what can I get out of this since I’m so smart.”

Posted by: DOROTHY JOHNS | February 8, 2009, 10:35 am 10:35 am

Steele knows very little about running a small business. The creation of Government business will fortify small businesses, simply because the people will have the money to spend. It will revive the economy and the circulation of money. It has been done before, and it is being done now in Germany. The whole world cannot be wrong. And by the way, when he refers to “this guy” whom is he talking about? The Republicans have shown their true self throughout this process, and it is ugly. They don’t even seem American.

Michael Steele AND the republicans are PINN HEADS expounding the same old ideas that got the country into this mess. Pele grants are a needed STIMULOUS that keeps our institutions of higher learning from going away and allow young people to better themselves!
But as we saw all through the last administrations time of terror, the “so called” conservatives want to dumb down the population and end educated thought and enlightened leadership. The reasons for this are clear, by keeping education in the hands of a few who wield power the public is easier to scare and control. We’ve seen it time and time again in human history, and the Republican leaders(?) want to take us down that road again! Nome Chomsky said it”The end of democracy will come draped the flag and carrying a bible”

Did Mr. Steele say that Bush inherited a recession and turned it around? Run that beautiful bean footage again! ?This Needle-nose crook is on the pipe!

Posted by: pam | February 8, 2009, 11:04 am 11:04 am

Another Republican crook. Mr. Steele, as his predecessors, had nothing to offer when Bush was president. Now all of suden the Republican Congress has something to say when the Democrats finally come up with a stimules plan. Bush and his regime, allowed these banks, auto companies, etc. to run out of control and the country is paying for it now. Pres. Obama inherited a mess that Rove, and all the other crooks left behind and now they are quick to criticize. The Republicans still have no plan.
The Republicans are sore losers. This is not a Republican or a Democrat problem–this is a country disaster.

Biden gave campaign money to everyone in his family, but that’s ok, everyone expects democrats to be crooked and never called on it. Certainly not called on it by clinton’s little butt buddies. Your stories are always so one sided that they can’t even be called news.

Posted by: Melissa | February 8, 2009, 11:08 am 11:08 am

Steele is right on target. I can’t believe George can’t tell the difference between creating work and creating jobs. The difference is like getting a job cutting a lawn, vs. getting employment with a landscape company, or starting a landscape company. Either George is not very bright, or he is showing his true liberal colors by disagreeing with Steele. The current stimulus package only provides jobs, more like projects, not long term employment. The difference is huge.

Posted by: Joe | February 8, 2009, 11:11 am 11:11 am

Steele is just another politician that doesn’t get it. I listened to all the Republican criticism of Obama, which started immediately. They didn’t even give him a chance. At first, it all sounded like sour grapes to me. However, now that I’ve heard more, I think it’s more than that. I learned a long time ago that when people tell you something over and over again, they are lying and hoping that you will buy whatever they are selling if they repeat it often enough. I’ve heard so many Republicans SAY they want Obama to be successful while they are at the same time telling everyone that Obama has it all wrong that I NOT convinced. They ARE LYING. They don’t want him to be successful. They don’t want bipartisanship. And, yes, that means they don’t care what lack of success means to the country. All Republicans care about is getting power back. They are a bunch of greedy PINHEADS and CROOKS, as others have commented here. And, they are DANGEROUS pinheads. They had eight years to show the country what they could do – to make the country prosperous, to leave it in better shape than they found it, and we all know what shape the country is in right now. Deregulation was their mantra. It made a lot of them richer and more of us poorer. The sooner we stop listening to them, the better off we’ll be. Write to your Congressmen and tell him or her to listen to Obama because we definitely don’t need more Republican policies.

Mr. Steele is another Republican boob! For some reason these Republicans have a short term memory. It is because of his Party being in power for 8 yrs. is the reason we are in this mess. Once again, we men that want the American People to believe that they do no wrong, can solve all the ills of the world and everyone should shut up and do as they say.
Did we do that already?
If the Republicans want to engage in this process, then do so; stop always trying to find fault. If we wanted drama we’d watch American Idol!!

Posted by: Mark Sanchez | February 8, 2009, 11:26 am 11:26 am

He is such an idiot, can’t he understand the republicans are using him to try to garner minority support. If John Mccain had won the election he would not be the president of the RNC.

Let me correct Michael Steele’s spin for him:
“Those allegations were leveled by MY FORMER CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN, a convicted felon who was trying to get a reduced sentence on his conviction. . . The thing about this George that is so frustrating to me, is that the Washington Post elevated MY FORMER CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN. And gave him credibility when no one else would. EXCEPT ME, THAT IS.

Yes, Mr. Steele. It is.

I couldn’t stand it. I had to turn off George’s interview with Mr. Steele this morning. He claims that the Republicans can’t be held responsible for the current econonic mess because it is only 18 months old. Give me a break. It took us 8 years to get to this point. And who had total control? W and his cronies. I’m sure W is laughing right now. Like everything else in his life, he’s made a mess for others to clean up. Except this time, the mess is affecting all of us and his Daddy’s friends can’t fix it for him. The Republical governors had it right; the Republican house and senate member still don’t get it. I’ve already written to Susan Collins and thanked her for showing true leadershp at a time when we need it. I’d suggest others do the same. The rest of the Republicans need to follow her lead. Obama needs all the support we can give him, regardless of our party affiliation. There is too much at stake. And contrary to what Rush Limbaugh says, Obama needs to succeed for everyone’s sake. Steele and the rest of the Republican leadership have already made themselves irrelevant. If they don’t watch it, they will truly become a party in exile.

Posted by: janet moore | February 8, 2009, 11:32 am 11:32 am

First of all how could you let the statement Bush inherited a recession go unchalleneged during your interview with Michael Steele? I almost went through the TV set on that one George.
Second Republicans don’t get it! Steele complained the plan would create work, not long term jobs, I’ll give hime that. But what the stimulus package will do is put money into the pockets of consumers so they can walk back into businesses to BUY their products, and that is the engine that fuels our economy. People buying products!
Tax cuts only do so much, sure they help to build wealth, but this trickle down theory has all but eliminated the middle class. A certain group have enjoyed Republican wealth building, and they have taken the money and run leaving the rest of us to deal with the ruins of this economy and Steel is STILL singing the same blasted song, it is infuriating!

I was clicking through the channels when I saw these two very different interviews. Just reminds me why I will never watch ABC or ABC News. G.S. must go or at least bring on a Rep to co-host to balance out G.S.- he is so unprofessional!

Michael Steele is a CLOWN!! His statements represent the classical Republican idealism that they know all and that everything they (The Bush administration) did in governing this country was right. How can this guy just change the definition of what a job is?? Also, where were the know-it-all GOP when we got into this financial crisis?!? Oh yeah, that’s right, they were majority party in charge the whole time!! Sure enough some of Clinton’s and HW’s policies added to it, however the known future impact was completely ignored on the GOP’S watch! No regulation or accountability clean accross the financial sector!!
We obviously need a clean sweep of these old fogeys in Congress who have no clue that their views and “good ideals” (because their good ideas are only “ideal” for themselves!) don’t coincide or mesh with today’s economy and technological advances!!

How is it a doctor has anything to do with catering and web development? How is it a company that does not exist gets paid $37K. Oh…yes, the company is dissolved but the bank account is not so stick it in the so called bank account and wire the money to a Personal account. A company dissolved does not mean a bank account dissolved. I smell foul all over this. Washington Post, thank you for bringing in light this story.

you are correct. Not at all racist. As a person of color , many minorities find GOP’s attempt to produce thier own” Barack Obama- magic negro” is so obvious and condescending, that they might have did a Al Jolson, and serve us chicken and grape kool-aid. They fail to see past color, that new ideas for the American families is needed. They are a party of exclusive.

Barry Obama and his choices for cabinet positions are suddenly making President Clinton look like an ethical man. I still find it disturbing that so many ignorant people are drinking the Barry Obama Kool-Aid. Accoridng To Mr. Obama himself who stated that this has been one of the smoothest hand overs of the Presidency in history and still Barry has still managed to screwed it up. This guy is in so far over his head that even the deaf, dumb and blind blogging on this site are having trouble finding things to defend. The Liberals can no longer blame President Bush so naturally they go after a guy who is not even an elected official and unlike Barry Obama is providing receipts and not hiding behind an attorney. Change you can beleive in???Riiiiiiiiiigggghhht!

Great, another scandal. Eventually everyone from the White House on down will have to resign – except of course the Civil Service that forms the real bureacracy of complacence, are appointed rather than elected, and are heavily protected from disciplinary action such as removal from their post.

True, they are all crooked, but Obama ran on the platform of a new kind of politics, transparency, and open government. What an absolute lie that turned out to be. That makes Obama 10 times the scumbag of your average politician. Now he is using fear tactics to promote this pork wrapped bacon flavored, ham he has the audacity to call stimulus?

Posted by: Badger | February 8, 2009, 11:58 am 11:58 am

The only way this illegal handling of campaign money will be stopped, is to apply punishment so that it sets an example to all. But, alas, it is our lawmakers doing the malfeasance, so no consequences will be.

Posted by: Mary jackson | February 8, 2009, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

He’s trying to disassociate himself from his former campaign chairman. It’s as if President Obama were to try disassociating himself from David Plouffe, by saying ” Well, I *WOULD* have talked about the charges he made against me earlier when I was campaigning for the RNC Chairman position, but they simply weren’t credible because the guy was a convicted crook!!”
Yes, Mr. Steele… But he was *YOUR* crook, and a longtime, close political associate of yours. Sentenced to prison for nine years for a $32M fraud / money laundering scheme.
I’m not saying Steele is a crook… I’m just saying that he’s been deceptive and monumentally obtuse in how he’s handled this issue, to the point of disgracing himself and becoming a big liability to his party from Day One.

I thought it was wonderful listening to michael steele’s proposals for what ails this economy…more tax cuts…small business owners need blah, blah, blah… It’s so relieving to know that the republicans will continue with the same rhetoric that keeps them losing elections.
His explaination on how this country was in a recession when George Bush took office (I don’t remember that) and this economic crisis dates back only 16 months was a perfect example of Republican bull.

To Mary Jackson, I was more afraid of what was going to happen to this country if Bush was in much longer, now that was scary and thank God his term is over, but now the rest of us have to deal with the damage that he did in just 8 years. Damn straight.
Can *ANY* Republican honestly say that Steele would’ve been electable had this news come out earlier, unless Steele had made unprecidented efforts to prove his innocence without a doubt?
Steele had his chance to preemptively address these charges before he was named RNC Chairman, and he failed, miserably.
Could they honestly say that if David Plouffe was sent to jail for nine years for a $32M fraud scheme, that they’d allow President Obama to walk away from charges of corruption by saying “Well, THIS GUY can’t be trusted! He’s a convicted felon!”
This guy was arguably closer to Michael Steele during his political career than any other person! He spent over a year running every aspect of his Senatorial campaign! You simply do not get that kind of power and influence unless you’re a trusted friend and advisor.

Good one George. I’m sure your daily phone calls to the White House about this was okay’d by Obama. Yes, I know, you and the dems see Mr. Steele as a threat so you have to find something on him. This reminds me of the trashing on Palin also. Where were your questions about Obama’s own aunt living here illegally during the campaign? Where were the questions about Obama’s campaign money contributions that came from Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko and Father Pflager came back to them in spending for their projects? George, where was the question of Obama purchasing his house from felon Tony Rezko for $300,000 less than market value? George, why not question Obama’s Senate office giving almost $1 million in donations to Prime Minister Odenga’s campaign in Kenya? Of course, there were FAR more important questions to ask Mr. Steele than this. I see the democratic mud slinging keeps going on. Politics is as usual and hasn’t gone away.

Kathy, I think you have it backwards. Every Democratic President has left us with a huge financial mess. FDR got us in the Great Depression and the Social security ponzi scheme. Johnson got us Medicare and Medicaid…the never ending money pit. Carter left us with double digit inflation, interest rates and unemployment. Not to mention the long lines at the gas station. We can thank Carter for our problems with Iran too. Wasn’t it Carter who said after the election of Venuzuelan President Hugo Chavez and said it was “legit”. It was a democrat that started Fanny and Freddie. Carter enacted the Community Reinvestment Act and Clinton re-inacted that in 1995. Clinton left Bush a recession with a deficit and Bush had 9/11 which Clinton could have prevented that too. Under Bush, GDP went up 3% each year till 2006…when the dems got in control of Congress. It won’t be too long before Americans wished that Bush was still in control. You’ve actually hired a guy with NO executive experience and no business experience either. 53% of the electorate were fooled.

Posted by: justrighttoo | February 8, 2009, 1:15 pm 1:15 pm

He also said that when contracts end, jobs end. Then how in this world did the electric company (the one that electrocuted our kids) get a contract renewal in Iraq? Maybe he means that only chosen and select contracts provide jobs. This company should have had their contract rescinded, not renewed. The repubs have given us another funny person to follow in the news just when Sarah thought she had it all tied up.

There is likely no truth to the accusation but I see it funny that Republicans especially the right wing radio either totally ignore the story or come to Steele’s defense. If Steele was a Democrat they would be lampooning any comments he may have and supporting the accuser as if he is a saint. They would be railing on this story for hours, days and even weeks.

Lets assume that the gov’t sends people a $700 check… it will buy a chinese, korean, or japanese TV.
Or reduce their taxes by the same $700 over 52 paydays… the worker gets to keep an extra $13.46 each week…
I would prefer that the the gov’t uses that money to repair roads, bridges, parks, whatever…. jobs are created, money earned, houses rented, cars bought, taxes return to the treasury, … and I get to use the roads, bridges, and parks… and someone will also get to sell the owner of the rental property new windows… and pay the installers, manufacturers, etc……….. the installers will buy TurboTax to file their new income tax.
Strangely enough… I have never complained about taxes… or minded paying them. I actually finished ours this morning… and e-filed. I had planned on getting an extension… but just kept plugging along and all of the sudden everything was imputted. The IRS sent a note saying they accepted them. I hope that Tom Dachle wasn’t using the Premire version of Turbotax…
I would like to make at least the inflation rate on CD’s and IRA’s but it may be hard.

This from a man that lied and put “DEMOCRAT” under his name on his campaign signs to try and trick voters in a heavily democratic district, to vote for him. Do a little research on this crook folks. Mr. Steele’s definition of “work vs jobs” was jaw-dropping. Perhaps someone needs to explain this Mr RNA and all his obstructionist cohorts: If the stimulus bill creates “work” the people who do that work will get paid in something we capitalists call “money”. And guess what they will do with that money: They will BUY things. And guess what that will do: It will create DEMAND, which means businesses will have to HIRE PERSONNEL to fill that demand, which creates–Wait for it!–JOBS!
Just how much cockamammy reasoning can these Republican reactors (as opposed to “thinkers”) support??

Typical strategy by the media, with an agenda, to raise an issue and let the victim defend the allegation. It’s truly non-partisan because each member of the media has their own agenda.

While liberals distract themselves with Michael Steele, word arrives of a possible new front on the War on Terror…
“Vice President Joe Biden warned Saturday [2/7] that the U.S. stands ready to take pre-emptive action against Iran if it does not abandon nuclear ambitions and its support for terrorism.”
Whoa, Obama/Biden were neocon warmongers all along! First we had two strikes on Pakistan (which killed multiple civilians) and now this.
C’mon liberals, tell us all again how McCain was Bush 3! We’re all waiting to hear your outrage at Obama/Biden for their saber rattling!

GEORGE BUSH INHERITED A RECESSION???
I am rather surprised that Stephanopolous nor his roundtable picked up on Steele’s blatant lie in his first few sentences saying that ‘ bush inherited a recession too!!!”. Not only is the man a crook, a token and an Uncle Tom fronting for the racist on the wrong side rebulicans, but hiis an outright liar. We all know Bush inherited a surplus of several billion $$ from Clinton. How far will they go these Republicans to misrepresent facts? George I was waiting 2 hear you drag him oout on this one, but even without it, you showed him to be a huge liar. He said the FBI had closed the case of his tthievery paying money to his sister, while at the same time saying he will take the initiative to provide all documents to the FBI. Steele tell us why you need to provide the FBI with exculpatory evidence on a case you claim is closed. LIAR liar your GOP is on fire, and you are UNCLE TOM, and the house slave ( nicer word substituted) combined.

Your not smart enough to post here, go watch The View… Bush did inherited a recession too. Just because MSNBC and NYtimes sais it, don’t make it true.

Posted by: Dr Dan | February 8, 2009, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

I watched the interview. I used to think Steele was intelligent but now I realise, he is just another Republican. Know nothing about Economics. Trying to differentiate between work and jobs. When you have a job, are you not performing a work? Stupid! What he was trying to do is differentiate between temporary jobs and permanent jobs. Some temporary jobs later become permanent jobs, Mr Steele and theses workers will be paid in dollars that they will be more likely to spend. Give all the tax-cuts and yet if we the people are not spending, JOBS WILL NEVER BE CREATED. There must be a demand before there is a supply.

Posted by: vuzous | February 8, 2009, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

Which recession did Bush inherit? Before Bush, was it not President CLinton? So where was the recession during the Clinton years. Steele mis-spoke but we will not crucify him on that. But his defence was just PLAIN STUPID.

Posted by: vuzous | February 8, 2009, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

When they start to build the bridges and parks who do you think will be building them, people here illegally from south of the border, you bet on it. I am in Georgia and they passed a law about only legal Americans working on state projects. They just built a new bridge and school near me and the supervisors had to speak Spanish. Why the heck is it that no one talks about out sourcing our jobs and then bringing in workers with phony visas. How bad does it have to get before we all take to the streets like in France?

Posted by: greg | February 8, 2009, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

The worse thing is die hard Repbulicans are so blinded by party loyalty, they don’t see the forest for the trees. Dems do wrong and reblc do wrong, but unlikethe honesty of our President, Rebpulicans are always trying to point the finger as someone else, dragging redherrings over their mistakes. Steele said this recession is only 18 months old, at the same time he said Bush inherited a recession. All in all he showed bush to be the biggest liar, as well as McCain, where they both were denying the country was in recession ‘ the fundamentals of the
american economy are strong’ was McCains positon less than 6 months ago, so Steele tell me Steele, while you are genufleckting to the drughead Liimbaugh, are you bothering to check your facts or are you just spouting what the party tells you to do as their token Black. Those White old men are afraid to attack Obama, and after they threw oreos at you, the assigned you the task. NOte that we African Americans are onto you, you are indeed an Oreo, and we wont let you be manipulated into trying to divide Black support for our president. We see you for what you are. I really wish somebody would start “investigating” all of the shoddy practices and activities at the Washington Post. Their style of journalism has fallen to that of the supermarket tabloids. When are we going to start ignoring the kind of sensationalist journalism that the Washington Post, NY Times and others engage in? I know they have to sell newspapers, but to do so by overlooking the truth is simply a journalistic form of McCarthyism.

Steele is correct. I work for a company that was dissolved back in September due to bankruptcy and we are still going after people that owe us money so that we can pay our debtors, we have a small group of employees still actively working to tie up loose ends and file our complete our 2008 filings (5500′s and such) just because a company is dissolve does not mean that their creditors does not have to pay their debts, it’s amazing to me that they were willing to come out with this story before getting all of the facts, but has been so hesitant to report anything dealing with Obama and his shady dealings and before you say it. I am a registered Democrat. However, I am not a kool-aid drinker, my eyes are wide open all of these politicians are shady but their is definately a double standard here.

Poor George. Can’t see 3 inches infront of his nose. Such is the entire Democratic party.
Creating Government job for infrastructure is TEMPORARY. Further, when the recently unemployed auto worker shows up on the construction site, what job do you think he’ll get? Bulldozer driver? Crane operator? No- those jobs take training, skill, and much experience. They will be handed a shovel and told to go dig ditches. How many will stay? How many would rather leach off of the unemployment rolls?
To fix the economy we must help permanent businesses. Throwing money into a bottomless pit will not work. Yes, we’ll have pretty new bridges and roads, but our country will be broke, inflation will grow like it did with Jimmy Carter, and we’ll be in exactly the same employment boat we are in now. This is stupidity at it’s best.
Think long term people. Before it’s too late.

I will believe in the “change” when I see see convictions for war crimes.
Otherwise we just have another set of elitists taking over from the other set of elitists.
Mr Steele is, of course, the new face of the RNC but why would anyone be suprised at corruption? It happens on both sides, perhaps a little more on the Republican side, but both sides none the less.
I’m very suprised at all this attention away from torture – like it never happened.
Either we clean our own house or other countries will do it for us.
Perhaps it would be sufficient payback if a foreign country arrested our war criminals and tried them at the Hague but it would look very bad.
This is either dealt with now or it will be repeated because of lack of consequences.
Do we really want another Bush-like presidency?

WASHINGTON — Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee, said Sunday that claims he made inappropriate payments to his sister’s company for work never performed were untrue and made by a felon trying to get a reduced sentence.
Steele paid more than $37,000 to a Maryland company run by his sister, Monica Turner, for work related to his unsuccessful 2006 Senate campaign. If she was not reimbursed, both he and his sister would be violating campaign finance laws, said Steele.
“It was a legitimate reimbursement of expenses,” Steele said on ABC’s “This Week.”
Steele became the first black national chairman in the RNC’s history last month. He was the first black candidate elected to statewide office in Maryland in 2002, when he became lieutenant governor, and was chairman of the Maryland Republican Party and then chairman of GOPAC, an organization that recruits and trains Republican political candidates.
Steele’s former finance chairman, Alan B. Fabian, claimed to federal prosecutors that Steele made the payment to the company, which was then out of business, as Fabian was seeking leniency on unrelated fraud charges, The Washington Post reported Saturday. Prosecutors gave Fabian no credit for cooperation when he was sentenced in October, the newspaper said.
The charges were made in a confidential sentencing memorandum sent by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Maryland inadvertently along with other documents requested by the Post.
In addition to the payment to Steele’s sister, Fabian alleged that the candidate used money from his state campaign improperly, that Steele paid $75,000 from the state campaign to a law firm for work that was never performed, and that he or an aide transferred more than $500,000 in campaign cash from one bank to another without authorization.
Requests for comment Sunday from the Justice Department in Washington, the U.S. attorney’s office in Baltimore and Fabian’s attorney, James Wyda, were not immediately returned.
“All the allegations from this convicted felon are completely false,” Steele spokesman Curt Anderson told The Associated Press on Sunday. Asked whether Steele was being investigated, Anderson said: “Some fed agents had a brief conversation with his sister. That’s all there is.”
As for claims that his sister’s company was out of business when the payment was made, Steele told ABC: “What I do know about is the fact that, as she understood it, the company was still in existence. Her lawyers were _ were telling her they were in the process of dissolving the company.”
Anderson said the questioned transactions were fully disclosed, completely proper and in full compliance with all state and federal laws.
“It’s going to take a lot more than this foolishness to slow Chairman Steele down as he begins the hard work of reviving the Republican Party,” Anderson said.

Vicki said,” I listened to all the republican criticism of Obama -they did not even give him a chance.” yeah – and the democrats were just waiting in the winds to help Bush and give him a chance. Stop drinking the liberal Kool Aid and start thinking for yourself.

Jim Bob – No republican has even mentioned anything about Steele’s race. The ONLY people bringing up the race issue are the liberal nazis like yourself. You left wing nazis are so obsessed with race and identitiy politics. Republicans want everyone wealthy and independent. You have been so brainwashed with racial identitiy politics and bitterness because of listening to the left, that you do not even know what you say or do. Electing a black man president should not be news in a nation like ours. But, it is news to those like you who have been taught that America is a racist and hate-filled country. We are the most intergrated and diverse nation in the history of hte world. Rather than celebrating that fact, you liberal nazis cling to this notion of a hate-filled nation that is trying to bring you down. Remember- race in America is only exploited by the left – not the republicans. Keep eating the bait, moron.

It is amazing how much hate and ignorance your respondents display. Most of these knuckleheads couldn’t carry Steele’s jock strap. The WP is a rag and it is the height of stupidity that ABC would get suckered into expounding on a non-story just to make an honorable, accomplished man look bad. It is really depressing that we cannot have honest disagreements. If you Dems want to bring up stupid people, let’s start with Jimmy Carter who’s actions have haunted this country ever since. Puh………lease stop reminding the world that you won an election. It is so self-demeaning and childish. Why not be adults and start reaching out to those who do not look or sound or think like you, maybe we would have true diversity and a better country. If you folks who say this stimulus plan is a good idea, just wait for history and then you can crow if it’s good, but most likely, you will be eating crow. Japan tried this approach at least 8 or 9 times and it failed to get them out of their depression. This stimulus will fail as well. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Does anybody really believe Steele was elected as head of the RNC for any other reason than he’s black?
And for that matter, what in the world has the Republican Party ever done for black people? One has to go back to Lincoln to find anything of relevance.

This is the Small Business that is talked about by the GOP. Small Business employ sisters, brothers, uncles, aunt, nieces, parents, brother/sister in law……..so where is there’s room for me?
Keep lying GOP, you’re clever. You have followers that just doesn’t get it. Except for the rich ones, they get it clearly.

Posted by: ridicklous62 | February 8, 2009, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

Wow, I didn’t think that the GOP could get any more pathetic. I guess I was wrong. This gimmick will work just as well as “since we have Palin on our ticket, Hillary supporters and women will come running” mentality.
REMEMBER THAT BRILLIANT IDEA ?!?
I am an independent and that stunt insulted me and every woman that I know. I’m sure that African-Americans feel the same way with this Steele pick. Putting a black face out in front of wack jobs like Ann Coulter, Sean Klannity and that mess of a man Flush Limbaugh, is a total joke. As long as the republican part keeps up these gimmicks, they will never get one independent vote.

Dennis Didio,
By eliminating income taxes, the individual would be saving far more than 700 dollars a year. If a you also freeze capital gains or set it at a low fixed rate, like 5 or 10 percent, this would also save thousands for the individual making 45,000 a year, esp. if he or she uses stocks to fund their 401K or Roth IRA. Further explaining…I’d be happy to. You may be an Obama voter, so I must kindly ask, do you even know what Capital gains taxes are?

Dalton – yes and the years of government entitlement spending from democrats has just done wonders for the blacks in this country hasn’t it? The democrat machine has you drinking their kool aid well. Keep drinking my friend. You are exactly where they want you to be.

sngeorgia – I have a small business. None of my family members are involved. I’d also like to see your statistics concerning the amount of small businesses being composed only of families. And if so, why is that bad? If you owned a small business, would you not want to have your children involved or carry it on when you are gone? Typical lineral- no substance in between those ears. I would not expect you to understand the nature of small businness any ways since you liberal hate-monger nazis hate businesses anyways and would rather live off the government.

George – that was quite an attack on Michael Steele this morning. I’m not a Republican or Democrat just a Canadian that pays attention and I saw a venom in both your willful “misunderstanding” of creating long term vs. short term construction jobs and then hammering him on an allegation. Can’t see you doing that to Geitner. Not your style. If I wanted bias, I’d look to Donna Brazille.

I can’t believe what I just read. The donkey really needs to be changed to the hippo, as in hypodemocrits. You just elected a person to be the leader of the greatest nation on the face of this earth for one reason only because of his skin color and now you point a finger at the GOP for placing a black man to the position as leader of the RNC. Remember this John, he who laughs last laughs loudest. You really embody the essence of the hypodemocrits, a bunch of hot air and no substance. We will be victorious in 2010. Especially when the president-in-training screws up our economy, military, health care, moral fiber, etc., etc., etc. I wonder if he has put any cigarette butts, roaches, stogies out on the Presidential Seal in the oval office yet? As he used to do in his dorm room. Don’t get me wrong, I too would vote for a black man for president, just not the wrong one like the one you hypodemocrits did. I would have voted for a Michael Steele or J.C. Watts. Someone with sound conservative principles. Someone who can think beyond talking points and teleprompters. Uhh! Uhh! Uhh! Tax cuts work, Reagan proved that. Handouts don’t, like you entitlement junkies have proven throughout the years that you have controlled congress. You have such short memories. 40 years you idiots. And each time a Republican president came in and saved the day you subsequently trashed their work. And here we go again. I still am trying to figure out how we are going to survive the next four years.
BTW–Thanks Rainy–I am relatively new to blogging and am enjoying myself immensely.

Steele took money to run as a candidate in Maryland. He’s hardly Mr. Clean. They called it “Consulting Fees”.
His campaign bussed in homeless people to hand out fliers making him look like a democrat. Phony Fliers.
Yeah…real respectable.

I think the republicans would like to have a glass of whine with their Oreo coookies.

Sue–just go Google “Recession of 2000″ and you’ll have a better understanding of the state of the nation when GWB was elected. Then, if you search any credible economist’s review of the current economic situation, they all agree the flashpoint was the Carter/Clinton requirement to force lenders into getting everyone and anyone, regardless of credit qualifications, into a home. From that point, it was bad investment after bad investment, in its simplest form.
As to Michael Steele–I’m able to look beyond the packaging and his content is stellar.

Posted by: CommonSense | February 8, 2009, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm

Not a chance. Hussein will have back pedaled enough and the lies and promises broken will be enough to disillusion even the stupidest of you hypodemocrits. Your lives and the lives of most all Americans will be so messed up that the house and senate cleaning will begin.

Posted by: JB | February 8, 2009, 8:15 pm 8:15 pm

President Barack Obama will be one of the greatest Presidents to ever govern this country once we, the people, get off our rumps and do what it takes to thoroughly destroy the Republican opposition. It’s apparent to the dullest that the Republicans want President Obama to fail and to heck with the country. It’s the Republicans who got us into this mess, when George W. Bush was allowed to increase the federal debt from 4.5 trillion Dollars to 10.5 trillion Dollars by passing massive tax cuts, while fighting two different wars. Of course, with a little help from those who called themselves Republicans at the time, we obviously could have stopped this war criminal from destroying our country. Now, we can only pray that President Obama will have the wherewithal to do this virtually impossible job. He’ll need plenty of support. But, what does he get from that sorry bunch of morons, i.e., the latest wave of Rush Limbaugh led Republicans — a public chorus wishing that President Obama fails in his effort to save our country from the destruction wrought in the Bush/Cheney years. There are 5 Republican Senators retiring in 2010, which gives us Democrats a golden opportunity to completely take over the Federal Government.

All the replublicans are blasting away at the democrats on the new stimulus package. What is it supposed to be, stay the course! Why, because we don’t want to admit we gave away the first stimulus package to big corporations and businesses and can’t account for it. So, let’s blow a smoke screen to get the heat off of them. Doing nothing is what they’ve been doing now for most of the 29 years they’ve been in charge. Let’s face it. Since 1980 (Ronald Regan & George HW Bush) there’s been a bush in the white house for 20 of the past 28 years! Is this just a coincidence? Come on people. Teddie Kennedy hasn’t done anything for me either but what did “W” do for you? Stay the course. Bull! Only if your rich, a large corporation or business, a bank or utility would you say let’s wait it out. They know they’re about to lose some substantial money in they’re pockets. I fact, all politicians Democrats and Republicans had better fess up or everyone will be under great scrutiny. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Let’s give it to the people and not the fat cat politicians and special interests! Stay the course, my A$$!

GW–Not nothing. Are you really that brain dead? The Republicans have put forth a viable solution. Get the money into the hands of responsible Americans who have proven that they know what to do with it. The so-called stimulus package concocted by the house hypodemocrits is so full of pork it oinked all the way to the senate. Again, you entitlement junkies have been at the teet so long it is just too scary for you to consider there might be a better way.

The government can supply all of our needs. More government, bigger government. The government can supply all of our needs. More government, bigger government. The government can supply all of our needs. Don’t you see my hand out. Oh barack please give me what I need. I can’t pay for my house will you pay for it for me? I can’t afford health care will you buy me a policy? I can’t pay for my college tuition can you pay it for me? I can’t afford my condoms can you buy them for me? Talk about whiners. You are sucking us dry. And you wonder why we are in this financial mess right now. The Welfare system is killing us. And now you dimocrits want to expand the program. The message is clear and the truth will be revealed the Dems got us into this mess and it will have to get worse for the people to see that the Republicans are the only ones that can get us out it.

Being a MBA, and also having a strong economic background I am here to tell you, that every “trickle-down” economic theory and the like put forth by the Republican (Repuken) party has been a total disaster. History shows that these policies have failed miserably every time. NO PROOF of ECONOMIC RECOVERY FROM TAX BREAKS IN AND OF THEMSELVES has EVER WORKED. Bottom line.

The Republicans have a real leader in Mr. Steele and you Lefties are creating false impressions within milliseconds. Its the Palin trashing all over again.
Have you no shame ABC? Stephanopolis has daily strategy sessions with the Carville and the WH staff any you call yourselves newsmen?
You have sold your souls and we will never trust you again.

steele is displaying poor judgement. not picking on him because he is a republican as democrats in obama’s administration aren’t much better, if not worse. steele should have known not to hire his sister for anything while campaigning for the senate seat. common sense should dictate that if you are running for office, you don’t hire your relatives for anything. hiring relatives eventually makes you look tainted in some form or another. even is steele is innocent, in this specific case, he is now tainted. just as geithner, dubois, blair, emanueal and et al in obama’s administation.

George’s lack of understanding of basic the basic pillars of capitalism is truly astounding. The economy benefits to a much greater degree when a private sector job is created vs when a public sector job is created. Producers vs users…it’s really that simple George. Next time, try brushing up on your understanding of free markets, capitalism, and individual liberty before you try to peddle your nonsense on national TV.

Daniel:
You are a delusional, ignorant,
Liberal Democrat!
The Republican Party doesn’t have to
create anything.
We had Colin Powell and Condi Rice way
before anyone knew who Obama was!
But I have to give you Dems Props.
You still have Mr KKK, Robert C Byrd,
in the U.S. Senate!
You Dems still get credit(if that’s what
you call it) for beating and hosing
down blacks in the 1960′s when a
vast majority of the racist southern
governors were Dems.
Yep you Dems have a lot to be proud of.
NOT!

T:
You ought to brush up on your History!
You currently have a revered Democrat
in the U.S. Senate who actually was
a KKK member. You should be proud. Duh!
The Republican Party is the party of
Lincoln Not the Democrats.
There has been a national brainwashing
campaign since the 1960′s to hide the fact that the oppressers of blacks
during those times were Democrat
Governors like George Wallace of
Alabama and Lestor Maddox of Georgia!
In fact the 1964 Civil Rights Act was
passed by Congressional Republicans
not Democrats.
The Democrat Party owes an apology to
all African Americans in this
country!

The Republicans need to wake up and smell the roses Steele says is laughable that the party has no credit.
George you did the right thing giving Steele the grilling he truly deserves
also, don’t let these clowns bring you down.

Ever notice how liberals are reduced to name-calling because they can’t articulate a reasonable argument against historically-proven ideas that have been shown to work every time they were implemented? Tax cuts alongside budget restraint has worked every time in the past.
This so-called stimulus plan signals real catastrophe for America’s economy. Think about it: where is the money coming from? Where did the first $350 billion go? Look at what this type of fiat spending did to Japan from 1989 to the present–their stock market is down over 80% since 1989.

Posted by: dowbuys | February 9, 2009, 11:33 am 11:33 am

Steele should sue the Washington Post – the newspaper’s behavior in this in unprofessional and perhaps illegal. They simply ignored facts and, once again, published fiction and tried to pass it off as fact. Sad thing is, there are people out there who believe what they read, even when it’s in the Washington Post, the New York Times, etc.

“Obama needs all the support we can give him, regardless of our party affiliation. There is too much at stake.” — Posted by: janet moore |
I find comments like these baffling. Why exactly does Obama need our support when Bush and other presidents did not? Statements like these really need some explanation.
The way I see it, the president, like all our elected officials, works for me. Either he can do the job he was elected for – even in the face of adversity – or he can’t. All these calls for supporting Obama sends a resounding message that he can not do the job without people cheering on the sidelines.

Why was this black man elected as RNC chairman? What significance does he bring to the renovation of the GOP ideology? This is a classic patsy ploy to revel around an edict that continues to wallop in its maze of misery and confucianism. Stop the madness!

If he acted inproperly, then kick his @ss out!
George,
I would think that in that case, the brunt of the ABC investigative staff could have been put on this and you could have presented what you found!
Is there no longer anyone in the “mainstream media” who understands how to investigate a story any more?

When he said a constuction job is not a real job. I wanted to reach through the TV and say GEORGE! Tell him that my husband has worked constuction jobs that are temporary for 10 years. They go from job to job when one is finished there is another one. Until the George Bush took office. It is good for the worker when there are lots of jobs it keeps their salaries more competative. The guys who pay the most get the best help. Thousands and Thousands of people make a living this way. The small business I work for does not and has not paid a dime of Taxes in the 12 years I have worked for them. I know I do the books. They have hundreds of loopholes. Example. Their computer breaks at home. They bring it to work call a computer guys tell him to charge it to the company. The company pays for it. Income not taxed an expense to the company. They buy cokes for a coke machine charge the cokes to the company and take the money they make off employees buying them. There are hundreds of things fix your car, pay for a deer lease. PLEASE AMERICA wake up. Both my bosses are Repulicans. They tell me how much they do for the country. I want to puke.

oh mikey C…
There is nothing wrong with a black anybody heading up the soon to-be-defunct GOP. I was merely bridging the politically inept gap between neocon dementia and liberal affectations with regards to philosophical proclamations of the first order. This guy is nothing more than a colorful patsy running on the coat tails of Obamania. If this is the best the RNC can do we can start ordering that grave stone now.

“They go from job to job when one is finished there is another one. Until the George Bush took office.” Posted by: Rose MacAskie
Rose, If what you are saying is true – that your construction worker husband worked steadily until the day George Bush took office – then I don’t believe you can blame his lack of employment on Bush. Construction boomed from 2000 until about mid 2007, so much so that illegal labor became common on many construction sites.
Also, I don’t know what you do for the company that you work for, but unless you are their accountant, you probably don’t have a clue how much they do or don’t pay in taxes. No company avoids taxes completely.

Hmmm… I guess the GOP should quit talking about the Cabinet nominees who have tax problems. Can anybody tell me why a black person would be a Republican? I seem to remember the Republican National Convention being a vast see of white faces. Most a racist and you will never see legislation aimed to benefit the black community coming out of a Republican. Very strange…

Posted by: DaveM | February 9, 2009, 1:00 pm 1:00 pm

DaveM:
Are you Stupid!
Do you not realize that one of your
Party’s leaders, Senator Robert C Byrd
of West Virginia was a member of the
KKK? Don’t you know that the vast
majority of racist southern governors
who suppressed blacks in the 1960′s
were Democrats like George Wallace and
Lestor Maddox?
Read some American History before you
post dumb remarks!
I can tell you why a black person would
want to be a Republican.
Because prior to Barack Obama’s
nomination and election it was
Republicans who appointed Colin Powell
and Condi Rice to the highest positions
an African-American had held!
They never claimed that “Bill Clinton
was the first black president” like
some phoney Dems did.
The Dems believe in the welfare state,
as in keeping blacks dependent on the
federal government(sort of like the
old plantations in the south)!
Whereas Republicans want to raise blacks up, help them succeed in business, and start their own businesses! You’ve been brain-washed
for far too long by the liberal news
media. Do some research and see the
light!

Posted by: reaganfan | February 9, 2009, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

Well DaveM, after watching Obama encourage, embrace and ride the most racist vote in the US since the 1860s I find any Democrat who is attacking any other group for “racism” has no credibility.
Black Americans are no different than any other racial group in this country. When people make something of themselves.. when they better themselves.. they vote Republican.

Wow, Dems like Jenner and Dave M are absolutely ignorant. They have no sense of integrity and neither does the media. Steele is an extremely smart and honorable man. How much more evidence does he need to provide? He does not need to exonerate himself because he has done nothing wrong. The media today has lost all credibility and only uneducated people like Jenner and Dave M keep their papers in print. Why would I even want to read papers like the NY Times or the Washington Post? I might as well pick up a copy of the Enquirer to get my daily dose of “news”. These papers used to have some degree of ethical behavior and courtesy. They’ve lost that and this is why they have to retract their stories all the time (especially when it comes to Republicans). Of course, by then the damage is already done even when the man is innocent. So the innocent are irreversibly damaged by the false accusations of the ignorant. These newspapers can’t get their facts straight or they choose to absolutely neglect them. Kind of like Jenner and Dave M. They’re all really pathetic.

Michael Steele is an embarrasment, I am black so I am speaking honestly of his lack of understanding about job creation. Last week, Mr. Steele stated that the government does not and has not ever created any jobs. The last time I checked, the military is run by the government ( the military is the plum of the Republican Party), the FAA is run by the government, public universities are run by the government, elementary and state high schools are run by the government. So all of the agencies create jobs, Mr. Steele seems to be impervious to this fact, and therefore whatever he says has zero credibility, just as the rest of the Republican Party has zero credibility

I have to wonder about you people, “Who’s your mommas?” When anyone disagrees with the Obama cheerleaders, you start with the name calling. My Mom would have wore me out, if I had behaved like most of you. It’s called manners. You might just keep your words sweet, I think you are going to have to eat them.

I see more hate of one party for another than I ever have before.
Obama’s leadership example is abysmal.
Why does he keep claiming tolerance and bipartisanship when we’ve heard so much sarcasim and finger pointing from the POTUS?
America will be circling the drain and her people will still be fighting each other.

I LOVE MICHAEL STEELE. I THINK HE WILL HELP OUR COUNTRY — IF THE LIBERALS IN CONGRESS DON’T DESTROY US FIRST.
NOW WE HAVE THE AL CAPONE GOVERNMENT AT ITS BEST — PERJURY, TAX EVASION, CONSPIRACIES, BRIBERY, FRAUD, RICO, GOODBYE AMERICA AS I KNEW YOU!!!
MAJOR TRIUMPH FOR OBAMA — MAJOR CATASTROPHE FOR OUR COUNTRY
A 160 million dollar inauguration wasn’t enough of a slap in the face to a hurting nation. Now he flies all over the country at taxpayers’ expense.
President Obama will sign the spending package but maybe he should add that members of Congress, both Houses should have an income freeze as quickly as they spend our money without even reading the spending bill created by lobbyists.
Where is representative government?
Everyone needs to stay engaged — pay attention and inform your family and friends of what is happening. We have elections coming in 2010 to set things right. We need to replace our members of Congress. In the meantime, speak up to your local and state officials — often!!!!

Posted by: JAY | February 15, 2009, 10:14 pm 10:14 pm

We as the American taxpayers who support and finance the government are quick to blame one or the other party for our problems. Are we so stupid and uniformed that we don’t realize the country is divided into those who work, pay taxes and try to get by, and those who take our tax money and dole it out to thier friends, associates, and families for thier own personal gain? How much downsizing and layoffs has the government announced lately? How many of them have taken pay cuts to relieve the run away spending that is the norm for washingtonites?, and exactly what is a “Staffers’ job description!? There seems to be a lot of them but there is no defined purpose for them!? think it’s time to start trimming jobs in government to save some of our money! They do work for us!

The Republican front man (Michael Steele)should recognize his situation for what it truly is. Had the Republican party won the last election, people would not even know that Steele is a Republican. Dummy doesn’t realize that he is being used to try to garner minority votes. He was probably the 3rd or 4th choice to lead the party. There is zero respect for him in the minority community because he doesn’t respect our President. I predict that when the true leaders of the Republican party realize that Steele cant do anything to help the party, he is going to get tossed out on his ass.
