Obama ‘Absolutely’ Still Supports Daschle

President Obama had a one word answer when asked today if he still supports Tom Daschle, his pick for Secretary of HHS, in light of his tax problems.

"Absolutely," the president replied.

Obama spoke briefly at the top of his meeting in the Oval Office with Republican Gov. Jim Douglas of Vermont about the need to pass the economic stimulus package, even amid some dissent.

"There are still some differences between Democrats and Republicans on the Hill, between the White House and some of the products that’s been discussed on the Hill," Obama said, "But what we can’t do is let very modest differences get in the way of the overall package moving forward quickly."

Obama thanked Douglas — and many other governors who would be weighing in on the debate in the next couple of days — over the stimulus bill. Douglas is the Vice Chair of the National Governors Association, and is in town to urge Republican Senators to support the stimulus bill, in addition to expressing the need for state funds.

Douglass acknowledged that there are differences in opinion on the stimulus bill as well, but said that moving forward is essential in light of the financial crisis affecting state governments.

"You were gracious in reaching out to the governors of our country in December before you took office," Douglas said of the past meeting Obama had in Philadelphia is governors. "And we had an opportunity at that time to discuss the economic crisis, the fiscal crisis that’s confronting most of our states. And we indicated that we needed some assistance from the federal government to stimulate the economy, to create jobs, to help us balance our budgets and preserve essential programs for the American people and avoid the need to raise taxes at the state level."

Obama said no one understands the need for "swift action" on the package more than governors who know the true economic conditions on the ground.

"The recovery package that we are moving forward is designed to provide states relief, to make sure the people who are laid off from their jobs are still able to get unemployment insurance, are still able to get health care, and that we are putting in place the infrastructure — rebuilding roads, bridges, waterways, other projects at the state levels — that allow us to put people back to work," Obama said.

This is simply unbelievable. It would only be fair to allow all of us a $128,000 tax credit, just as Daschle got.
This kind of avoidance gets normal people in front of a judge in a tax court. For Democrats it’s a prerequisite for high office.

I’m heartbroken that Obama stands firm on his appointment of Tom Daschle. Obama’s promise to bring ethics back into DC is shattering. Between Daschle and Geittner, both of whom owed back taxes, smacks of corruption. That they both appeared “caught off guard” shows that they simply “got caught”. Main Street peons would be jailed or paying heavy penalties.
I expected Obama to have to compromise a little in order to work in a bipartisan way but, never expected this blatant move so quickly.
I guess it’s politics as usual.

Democrats love to preach at people about “fairness” and “patriotism” when it comes to taxes.
Fine. I move that it is now fair to refund each and every American taxpayer the total amounts of unpaid taxes by Geithner, Rangel, Daschle, the mortgage discounts offered to Chris Dodd from the company which he oversaw, etc. In addition, the total amount that Congress has tacked onto their pay raises should also be included.
Who’s with me? I think a nice set of multiple-hundred-thousand-dollar checks for each taxpayer would provide a nice stimulus for the little guy and the economy.
So much for ending the “culture of corruption” and “draining the swamp.” All that’s been done is a switching of the letters from R to D.
CHANGE! Psych.

Daschle’s tax problems, whoich he knew about as long ago as last June, are not his only failing when it comes to HHS. Acting as a fully-paid lobbyist for health care groups without bothering to register as a lobbyist is even worse. If/when he’s confirmed, we can rest easy knowing that any and all regulations/”change” will be carefully written by and approved by the health care industry.
Call your Senator now. Let your voice be heard.

Of course he still wants Daschle – he wants someone who will successfully do the job and make his re-election in 2012 easier. Oh yeah, and benefit all Americans in the process. Daschle’s tax shenanigans don’t impact his skills to do the job. It’s up to Congress to decide if they see them as detrimental enough to his ability to serve America to deny the appointment (something that is very rarely done by either party – Presidents are given great latitude to select who will be on their team).

Why doesn’t an intrepid member of the press ask Mr. Biden if he feels that Rangel, Geithner or Daschle are now defined as unpatriotic.

There’s a nasty story beginning to circulate about how Rush Limbaugh became the guy we know and love (hate?). I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it is, apparently, true. In 1987, when the Fairness Doctrine came to an end and radio/TV/press were allowed to support (or talk trash about) a political point of view without giving equal coverage to the other side, Terry McAuliffe, then a minor player in the democratic party, knew of radio personality Limbaugh. After discussing his “big idea” with senior members of the DNC, McAuliffe arranged a meeting with RL. They discussed the possibility of Limbaugh becoming an on-air anti-liberal – seemingly to support the republican cause and bolster the growing neocon movement. The idea: Limbaugh would help splinter the republican party by drawing the most conservative of their group into a new, highly conservative wing. The moderates, many of those republicans living in the northeast, midwest and west, would find it difficult to support such repressive viewpoints. The once solid republican voting block would fracture, thereby strengthening the democratic party. The only problem was, Limbaugh wanted money, and lots of it. That’s how the plot is being uncovered.

How about the IRS audit the top 1,000 people of our government service. From the looks of it, if they did, it would pay the entire economic stimulus package.

bc: “All of you who voted for him will now see what his true agenda is.”
Actually, most who voted for him are satisfied with his performance. Finding a few skeletons in appointee closets happens to every administration (interested that Dems have tax problems while Repubs tended to have illegal aliens as household help problems). I voted for Obama based his actual agenda – that is what he promised to do – and so far am satisfied by his actions. Surprisingly, the (historically small) minority that voted against him still doesn’t like him.
But I’m fine with Daschle getting a few whacks – look up the showboating swings *he* threw attacking Bush’s appointee who helped an illegal alien/houseguest. But ultimately if the tax issue does not affect his ability to do the job he should be appointed and Obama judged in 2012 on actual performance.

“How about the IRS audit the top 1,000 people of our government service. From the looks of it, if they did, it would pay the entire economic stimulus package.”
Now that corporate player Geithner IS “the IRS”, that won’t work … :^)
But investigating Congress (since they are the ones okaying the appointment of these powerful crooks) — and Congressional spouses past and present — for tax and corporate irregularities would be MOST interesting.
The “media” — i.e., actual reporters — would have to do this. As it is, the only person dealing with “poverty” seems to be some guy at CNN who’s supposedly trying to live on Food Stamps … for a month.

jhw539 … Politics much worse than ever.
So far again he has made promises but nothing has been done other than bring tax cheats and more corruption into the WhiteHouse on a scale never seen before.
I thought the Mayor Nagin of New Orleans was bad until now.

Posted by: hamuger hill | February 2, 2009, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

Rob Murph he lost his importance when he failed to pay taxes and new it. Two thirds of these guys or better are lawyers and have someone do there taxes. This is a flat out failure to abide by the laws we all have to abide by. So! he needs to go and pick someone else who is responsible.

Posted by: Jim Rod | February 2, 2009, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

@jhw539; I don’t agree that it is the worst. BUT, Obama was the one that SAID, “NO LOBBYIST” and then made allowances.
Plus, he needs to stop backing the people that DID NOT pay their Taxes.
If Obama wants the people of the middle and lean a little to the right to keep backing him, then he needs to STICK to what he SAID. “CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN”.

Posted by: ajax | February 2, 2009, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

Lobbyist…no problem…tax cheats…no problem…I wonder if he only has a problem if you aren’t somewhat corrupt. As for the tax cheats, they annoy me more than anything, we make a mistake and pay out the arse, they make a mistake and get a high profile government position hmmmmmmmmmmmm…..

Obama is turning into the same sort of shady politician. I voted for him but am very disappointed. Obama promised that any non-emergency bill would be first released to the public for 5 days on his website before signing it….however he’s already broken that promise. And now he’s breaking his own ethical rules for lobbyists, etc. I’m so sick of politics as usual. What happened to change and transparency?

Posted by: Brian | February 2, 2009, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

Hey, it’s only $140K, way below the $250K of 0bama definition of you elite rich Class, and the bonuses that his Fighting Dog barked for Wall Street “idiots”.
So, what a big deal of only $140K tax cheating. The treasury secretary will take good care of it – not to enforce the law – by example.
If you work for our Greatest Leader, it’s good for the people.

hamuger hill “So far again he has made promises but nothing has been done other than bring tax cheats and more corruption into the WhiteHouse on a scale never seen before.”
His executive orders have been signed and are published for all to see. He has certainly done something, even in the short weeks he’s been in office.
And suggesting that two tax cheats out of all his appointments is “more corruption” than ever before is an embarrassing commentary on your knowledge of history.

Really? Which bill would that be? The first one he signed was published on THOMAS, a service provided by the Library of Congress as S.181, which was linked to from Whitehouse 5 days before he signed it…

Two Cats: I think you have your details mixed. The 250K is an earned income number, the 140K is what Daschle OWES on back taxes. His income is obviously much, much higher if he OWES that kind of money to the IRS.

Posted by: Paula | February 2, 2009, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm

Obama is turning out to be such a hypocrite. If he doesn’t still have principles after two weeks in the White House, it’s evident that the “machine” has gotten control of him already. Where’s the example of “do the right thing” in our leaders as an example for us all. There are many other smart capable people who could fill the role, oh, but I forgot, Daschle is part of the political payback and doing the right thing means nothing anymore. This burns me not only on Daschle but that everybody and everything needs to get “bailed” out. I am constantly barraged with tax issues, I deal with them, pay them and it is a significant amount. And it looks like I will be one of the minority paying even more for everyones inability to adjust and take a long view at this point versus having to be comfortable today. Why send the tax $ to Washington where they’ll suck off 20% or more just to send it back to the states when I could pay the state directly.

Posted by: spiderbite | February 2, 2009, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

“Really? Which bill would that be?”
That’d be the misleadingly-entitled “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act” -0 which actually has nothing to do with “fair pay”, but merely adjusts the red tape on the time to file lawsuits against employers.
Look at politifact, or Google “Obamameter”.

As a CPA – I am offended that these guys are getting a free pass with no consequences for cheating on their taxes (Treasury Sec and now Daschle). How many hundreds of thousands of dollars do you have to steal from the federal government in unpaid taxes before that precludes you from getting appointed to some of the highest positions in government.

What say the last 8 years of Washington upheaval has done to Us the American People! This is why the Democrats have the Floor…We allowed Professional talk and Perfected People to be Leaders who had their own agenda to take and conceal means and ways at the expense of the American Dream! It does not matter right or left but who will clean up the last years mess…and as a Nation we will always bicker, just like a family who faces struggle…aversity is everywhere but now we can have Hope to change the future that was envoked! This situation is analogous to the long-standing ban on (closeted) homosexuals in the intelligence and military services: people who are vulnerable on secrets will do just about anything to protect public image.
If corporations didn’t control all but a couple of Congress members, this crap would NOT be happening.
If Daschle is confirmed, ALL states should begin recall efforts on MOST of “our” representatives.

I wonder what Obama’s response would have been if asked on the campaign trail if he would approach someone, who he later found out through the vetting process, to be a tax cheat, if they would serve in his cabinet. What would be his answer. I don’t think it’s Obama. I don’t think it’s Daschle. It’s the environment we the people have created in washington. With a wink and a nod, the trips to the Caymans on a lobbyist tab, free car service, free home renovations, and an overall sense of insulation from the rules we the citizens of the same America have to abide by. With an oops here and an embarrassed there, here an oversight, there an honest mistake, all is forgiven when an elected official. I’m curious to know the name of the last Senator or Congressman audited by the IRS in the history of our country. I can tell you one thing as sure as im sitting here venting, having written a large check to the IRS yesterday, there are a number of Senators, Congressman, and past elected officials praying they’re phone doesn’t ring with Obama on the other end asking them to serve their country as a member of his cabinet.

Tom Terrific :”That’d be the misleadingly-entitled “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act”
The claim was that Obama signed this bill into law without having it posted 5 days prior to his signing it. The public review page at Whitehouse doesn’t give the date it was posted, but on Sunday, January 25th, 2009 a link to the full text of the bill was posted along with a summary of it on the Whitehouse blog. It was signed on January 29th. Even assuming that the public review page only went live at the same time as the blog entry, that means the argument is that he’s a liar because he only posted links to the full text of the bill on Whitehouse 4 days, not 5, before he signed it. Is that the big “Obama is a liar” point you are supporting?

“Why are we in this handbasket? “if I did that, I’d be in JAIL!”
THIS IS A LIE. If you responded with an oops and paid up taxes + interest and penalties as Daschle did, you would be treated exactly the same.”
I’d generally agree with you that the no private citizen would be in jail at this point.
But whether a person gets charged with tax fraud depends on a determination if a “significant portion” of income was “fraudulently concealed”. The circumstance around this extra $88K in income for ’07 certainly seem suspicious, and it is hard to believe that someone like Daschle wouldn’t have know that any benefit you receive is taxable. So I think its conceivable but unlikely that criminal charges could be brought in a case like this.
Usually the attempts at fraud are much more egregious (like cash payments or phony receipts) to draw charges. So while Daschle could be criminally charged, it would be unusual.

People without heat and power for weeks, if this had happened under Bush’s watch, they would be crucifying him right now… just like they did for Fema’s slow respoinse in N.O. Take a good look at we have elected.. A communist as environmental CZAR, two tax cheats in cabinet positions, less than a month after he stated that he would not sign any bill with PORK, he endorses a 900 billion “stimulus” package that is 80% pork, will do nothing to create jobs and is primarily a payoff to the special interest groups that got him elected… How many jobs will 4 billion ot ACORN create? How many will 30 billion to the teacher’s union create? 8 bi9llion motre to pet projects like the NEA, TV digital converter coupons, and carbon offset research,.. How many jobs will be created by increases in welfare checks and food stamps?.. Maybe we need those, but they are NOT STIMULUS ITEMS.. they will do nothing to fix this economy.. Bush allowed the national debt to increase 4.5 Trillion in 8 years – thats bad.. this congress and this president want to increase it by another 2 trillion in 8 weeks… can you read the writing on the wall or are you too young to remember the Carter years???

Gives two of his cabinet nominees a pass on “forgetting or not aware” on their taxes without payment of penalties.

So, you have a lot of fun calling people names and being so righteously indignant. Oh…the “tax cheats” — though that isn’t anywhere near legally true… taxes`were paid with the required penalties and interest within the IRS statutes of [time] limitation.
You feel so superior.
Sorry… you aren’t.

Nothing.

Every state involved in the Storm representatives have said on TV that President Obama WALKED THE EMERGENCY PAPERS THRU AND THAT FEMA HAS RESPONDED IN RECORD. THE ELECTRICITY GRID IS OLD THAT’S WHY THE PRESIDENT IS TRYING TO GET IT REPAIRED IN THE STIMULUS. REMEMBER NY BLACKOUT
NEXT:
Honesty is a hard thing for some to be. The Internal Revenue sends millions of Americans notices each following the filing of their taxes saying you compiled it incorrectly, thus you owe an additional amount. THis is not a tax cheat.
Dashel has lived his life so that all in Washington even Republicans that he’s the most trustworthy guy they know and want to review the facts before taking a position.
However, we have you right wingers who without knowledge and are just waiting for a chance to pounce on every move the Administration makes, because you have nothing better to do.
You now have a new RNC CHAIRMAN, Michael Steele apparently the Republican Party felt they needed new direction and inclusion even though they are being still obstructionists. How’s the new appointment working for you?
Since the latest poll indicates that the overwhelming majority of Republicans want Palin as the leader you have your work cut out for you.
Poll: Republicans Want Party To Be Like Palin; A New Rasmussen Poll Further Demonstrates that the GOP could be In For A Long Stretch In The Wilderness.
A new Rasmussen poll further
demonstrates that the GOP could be in for a long stretch in the wilderness: A majority of GOP voters now say that the party should be more like Sarah Palin.
The numbers: 55% of Republicans say the party should be like Palin, compared to 24% who say they should be like John McCain.
As I’ve previously noted, poll data like this could indicate that the Republican Party is getting ready to relive the classic cycle of ruling parties who get turned out of power in a landslide: With the party base itself shrunk down, the people who are still around are the most hard-line members, and are really the least fit people to fix the situation.
Good luck with that!

Of course, he would have had to leave the 78 degree White House and go where it was cold otherwise. So much for global warming eh Mr. President. Just like every other person in government do as I say not as I do. Obama’s staff doesn’t have to suffer in the cold, pay taxes, or give up their lobbying as long as it is to look after HIM!!!

Ethics violations by our elected representatives MUST be addressed immediately, and harshly. Throw the freakin’ scum bag out.
He should also be damned glad this isn’t still 1809 instead of 2009. If it were, he’d be dragged around back of the Capitol Building by his heals, where he’d be tarred, feathered, a bullet inserted unceremoniously into the back of his head, and then buried in a shallow grave out in the hog pen!!!
What is with these Democrats? They have no problem passing legislation which RAISES taxes; they have no problem COLLECTING taxes; they have no problem SPENDING tax dollars; but they sure seem to have a problem PAYING THEIR FAIR SHARE!!

Are you better off than you were when Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2007?
Facts about economy since Democrats took control of Congress in 2007. (FYI for all the Obama voters: House and Senate control spending and legislation. The president can only sign or veto their legislation)
1) Stock Market has crashed from 12,157 in November 2006 to 8,250 today.
2) The night of the Democratic landslide election of 2006, the net worth of the country was roughly $50 trillion. It is now at least $6 trillion lower.
3) The federal budget deficit has soared from $165 billion in fiscal year 2007 to $486 billion in 2008 and could reach $1 trillion in 2009. (Pelosi ran on fiscal responsibility and lowering the budget deficit). If that were not enough, the Democrats are trying as hard as they can to spend another 900 Billion in the name of “Porkulus -er, stimulus”
4) In 2008, the economy lost a net total of 2.9 million jobs. That marks the biggest annual loss in US history.
5) Unemployment when Republicans had control in 2007 was 4.6%. Unemployment since Democrat control for House and Senate is 7.6%
6) The Department of Labor reported in July 2007 that the economy created jobs for 46 consecutive months (almost 4 years straight!). America added 132,000 jobs in June 2007 and the economy added more than 8.2 million new jobs (August 2003 to July 2007).
7) Since Democrat control: Historic job losses. The jobs lost so far since the recession began in December 2007 are the most of any downturn in the post-war period. About half the losses occurred just in the past three months!
7)The Democrats in Congress have been calling the shots for the past two years. Look where that’s gotten us.
8) Remember Nancy Pelosi’s pledge to run the most ethical congress ever? More corruption scandals involving Democrats since 2007 than all of Bush’s presidency! 3 Tax cheats in Obama’s cabinet and more scandals in his first month than most President’s have in their entire first term. (Mostly simple “mistakes’ and “poor judgment” in Obama’s own words)
9) Massive government bailouts of Democrat leaders baking buddies and insurance companies resulting in financial windfalls for Democrat financial friends of “troubled” companies -Corporate CEOs and their investor buddies.
Remember how crucial it was to do? Out entire financial system was going to colapse unless we did something NOW. (How is it that were still alive and a) most of the money hasn’t been spent yet and b) of what has, the money hasn’t even gone to what they said it would)
10) Obama’s broken how many of his “promises” already? No lobbyists in administration. Check. All bills to be open to debated on House and Senate floor for at least 5 days. Check.
I’m sure none of these facts matter to the Obama nation. Now we’re going to see change all right. The Obama motto: We live in the greatest nation in history. Join with me as we try to change it. No, he didn’t say it exactly, but it sure is “coming home to roost.”
4 more years, 4 more years, 4 more years Yea!
