Obama Praises Senate, Stumps for Stimulus in the Sunshine State

ABC News’ Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report:

President Obama took his stimulus salesmanship on the road for the second straight day, to Ft. Myers, Fla. this afternoon.

Five questions into the town hall event the president was handed a note, a signal that the Senate had passed their stimulus bill.

“I just wanted to announce that the Senate just passed our recovery and reinvestment plan. That’s good. So that’s good news,” Obama said, “And I want to thank all the members of the Senate who moved the process forward. We’ve still got to get the House bill and the Senate bill to match up before it gets sent to my desk, so we’ve got a little more work to do over the next couple of days, but it’s a good start.”

Obama continued to call on Congress throughout his speech to work on this “mission” in a way that “transcends party.”

“When the town is burning, we don’t check party labels,” Obama said, “Everyone needs to grab a hose.”

Obama said that the plan is not perfect. “It was produced in Washington,” he admitted with a smile. “Doing nothing is not an option. You didn’t send me to Washington to do nothing.”

Mr. Obama said that the time for talk is over and that while he believes in hope, hope alone is not enough –- that there must be action.

Stumping the stimulus in the part of Florida hit by the highest foreclosure rate in the country, Mr. Obama made special time to address struggling homeowners, referencing the plan Treasury Secretary Tom Geithner outlined this morning.

“We know that in order to address our economic crisis, we must address our foreclosure crisis,” Obama said, “My Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, outlined a plan to address these challenges this morning. And we know that, in order to address our economic crisis, we’re going to have to help homeowners, not just banks, but homeowners, as well.”

During the Question and Answer session Obama said that he would be personally making an announcement on housing soon – separate from the parts outlined by Geithner today.

“I’m going to be personally making an announcement in the next couple of weeks about what our overall housing strategy is going to be,” Obama said, “People may be getting squeezed on their job, their incomes are lowering, and they’re still doing what they’re supposed to do.  They’re still making these payments every day, but it’s getting harder and harder and harder.”

Obama was asked how the American people – who are “notorious” for being impatient – should be patient when awaiting for the affects in their lives of the stimulus plan.

“I won’t lie to you,” Obama answered, “I expect to be judged by results.”

Obama said that if in a few years from now people don’t feel like the economy is turned around, then they can judge him then, “I’m not going to make any excuses. If stuff hasn’t worked and people don’t feel like I’ve led the country in the right direction, then you’ll have a new president.”

One of the most parts was Governor Crist (Republican and major McCain supporter) standing next to Obama and asking for bipartisan support because the bill is very much needed.

The Americans have elected President Obama to the top job. They should simply allow him to do his work and simply judge him by the results he gets.
BTW, Canadians are very excited about the President’s visit next week
I hope this visit leads to a new era of co-operation between the two countries.

“I’m not going to make any excuses. If stuff hasn’t worked and people don’t feel like I’ve led the country in the right direction, then you’ll have a new president.”
That is awesome that he said that; it shows that he is human, he is humble. And it shows he really does care about the well being of the American people and wants us all to have better lives. He is a very intelligent individual and knows what he is doing. People are just too quick to judge him (like they are with anyone lately). I say just be patient…wait for things to happen. It’ll get better, I promise. And it’s true, Americans are largely impatient these days. We all want things NOW NOW NOW. Realistically that won’t always work. But it’ll get there.

I agree, but keep in mind it is Obama that has pushed for this bill to happen NOW NOW NOW.
It is the largest spending bill in history- in the past two days our government has committed to spend over $2,000,000,000,000.00, supposedly without the luxury of having enough time to actually read the bill (or in Geithner’s case, explain it fully).
In this case, the lack of patience is coming from the top, and it’s fair to judge Obama as he uses the sense of urgency to get the spending bill he wants.

It isn’t good news for our country. The stock markets keep going down and the Democratic in Washington are “corrupt” like all his cabinet members, his Chicago friends at the White House, and Obama for example.

“I won’t lie to you.” Eeeya, that’s what liars usually say.
First lie is that Republicans wanted to “do nothing” and second lie is that the Republicans gave him a huge deficit. The republicans wanted less pork and more stimulus and the Democratic Congress forced through the first disasterous TARP bill adding to the deficit. He also lied about Japan not acting swiftly or boldly enough. They actually acted too swiftly and too boldly resulting in elongating the economic turmoil.
“A lie told often enough becomes the truth” who said that first? Oh, right… it was first said by Lenin!
If you repeat a lie often enough

Now we’ll see first if Pelosi can actually leave the Senate version untouched to get it through the House, then if the stimulus actually works. The public may be patient with Obama, but you can bet the GOP will slam him every day that goes by without a recovery, starting this minute.

I have watched this country turn from a nation of great faith to a nation of little faith. Attn: “Decision Makers!” Your the decision makers for a reason, when you give people authority to say “NO” who have no authority to say yes. That’s what their going to do! Their not going to base their decision on facts, logic or out-come. And you suffer because of that. Isn’t it true the only time we benefit from anything is when we say yes instead of no? Think about it, you said yes to your family, your home, your lively hood. Start saying yes to things that will benefit all that, and for Heavens sake; please stop having people screen your calls, if they was smart enough to make your decisions in life for you they would be you. I contribute our economy to all the people that answer the phone for the Boss and think their protecting the Boss by offending the people the good lord sent to help them…then we got real decision makers like that lady that hung up on president Obama setting neg examples. Remember what we was taught as kids, when we assume, we make an a** out of you and me..

First lie is that Republicans wanted to “do nothing” and second lie is that the Republicans gave him a huge deficit
=======================================
Um….first GWB inherited a surplus but instead of using the surplus to improve infrastructure decided to give everybody a rebate. Stupid move #1. Secondly, the Republicans were in charge of the Congress for 6 of the previous 8 years and the Presidency for 8. What did they do? Vote for additional task cuts. Then GWB and Republicans stood idly by while the financial markets collapsed leaving Obama with a $450 billion deficit. Republicans simply have no credibly left when it comes to financial decisions in this country. They are far too short sighted. It is the nature of conservatives. They simply lack vision of the future and live for today.

Don’t you care about Americans who are losing their homes and jobs? Aren’t you concerned about the failing economy and businesses? It sounds to me like you prefer failure to improvement or success for the country by declaring Obama’s termination. Besides, after only 3 weeks into the presidency, no one can make any kind of an election prediction for him in 4 years.

“Actually, Republicans were in charge of Congress for the middle four years of the last eight years. Democrats were in charge of the US Senate from 2001-2003″
Actually Republicans were in charge of the House from Jan 1st 1995 to Dec 31st 2006. They were in charge of the Senate for Jan 1st 1995 to May 2001 (it was a 50-50 split with the Cheney tiebreaker) when Jeffords split. That gave the Democrats a 1 vote margin until Jan of 2003 when the Republicans regained control of the Senate until Dec 31st 2006.

Here a bailout, there a bailout, everywhere a bailout, BAILOUT. When will it end?
Just about now, everyone’s holding their hand out. The question is… Whose hand do you put the money in?
Automakers, Banks, Investment Firms, Insurance companies, mortgage brokerage houses and the like, all in need of money. Do they all get a bailout? NO!
No More Bailouts!
If you want to fix this problem, choose your steps wisely. Perhaps a little common sense will do. Don’t take money from a struggling taxpayer and give it to a list of failing companies. If you want both to succeed, give the money/incentive to the taxpayer. Save your Stimulus Package. It’s a short term fix for a long term problem. Let’s place the money where it matters and do it in a beneficial way.
It’s really simple… When business slows, you need greater sales.
Greater sales equal Bigger Discounts.
Bigger Discounts come with Coupons.
That’s right, Government Backed Coupons issued to the taxpayer for each of these US Based Companies. What a better way to turn this economy around than with Americans buying American.
Like with any other small business, automakers don’t need money, they need to sell cars. Here are coupon Numbers 1, 2 & 3. After manufacturer and dealer discounts, taxpayers will apply this government coupon, thereby reducing any financed amount.
Teach Americans how to save. Be it with a Bank or Investment Company, so many taxpayers don’t realize the importance of long term investments. Here are a few more coupons. Matching Government funds, up to a certain amount, on long term products, is a positive way to set Americans off in the right direction. Perhaps one day you’ll call it Social Security Reform.
Did I hear something about a downturn in the housing market? STOP the Foreclosures!
Effective immediately, Subprime Mortgages are OUT. If you hold such a mortgage, it will be rewritten as a 30 year fixed rate mortgage, at today’s rates. That’s right; every delinquent taxpayer becomes current, in receipt of this new mortgage. There’s NO coupon here. This is where the institutions take their lumps for issuing mortgages that should never have been written. This isn’t a Free Ride for the taxpayer. They must remain current, moving forward, until the new mortgage is in place. The past due principal amount and minimal fees will be added to the new mortgage.
Yes it’s simple and yes it needs fine tuning… but it could work.
Dan

Keep in mind GW spent eight trillion dollars in his eight years in office and was strongly criticised by Obama. I wonder what the running tally will be by BO’s first one hundred days in office. Pelosi and Reid invited the Republicans to help craft the bill and they declined. I will not speculate as to why, you can draw your own conclusions.
The Republicans were asked in markup for additions and deletions, some of which were accepted.
It is extemely bad taste to claim that the Republicans were not involved, when that was their choice.

“Yeah, something is better than nothing … ”
Well, THAT’s not necessarily true! In the first place, “nothing” leaves possibility for doing something thoughtful. Second, most of the Democrats, AND the stage-struck Executive, will be busy trying to spin what they HAVE done, if they DO do it.
I guess The One, being “post-partisan”, is only a Democrat-of-convenience, but that the ACTUAL Democrats can permit ANOTHER bank bailout (so that everybody from students to homeowners can be ever more in hock to the banks), is difficult to understand. Why not just let the banks fail, make government loans to students and to people needing houses? (Answer: the corporations are running the Congress AND The Puppet.)
Better yet, do green public housing (“stimulus”), bulldoze the too-big, energy-hog houses, LET the banks fail, let their accumulation-crazed personnel retire to the golf course.

T–”republicans trash the country again and us democrats will repair it again.. we aregetting sick of turning yoru republican recessions and depressions around.. ” — Exactly what makes this a republican recession?? The democrats ran the congress since 06.. republicans warned in as early as late 05 of impending problems… In 06 they held congressional hearings and at leat 8 republicans testified that the mortgage industry ( in particular Freddie and Fannie) were in crisis and the democrats told them to sit down and shut up… (Cspan covered it).. I get sick and tired of being told this is a republican recession… BS.. this is 100% democrat sponsored recklessness.. Reid, Franks, Dodd, Rangle, et al… When bush took over the country in 2000, the dot com industry was crashing and the stock market was contracting with the weight of Clintons taxes… tax cuts in late 01 restored 6 million of the 6.8 million jobs lost due to CLINTON economics.. sure, he balanced 2 annual budgets, but the debt still grew under Clinton by over 2 trillion… then we go to war and see just how much his “balanced budgets” have cost.. an under funded military with poor or missing equipment and a VA completely unable to take care of soldiers when they returned… Now you idiots want to blame the republicans for the mess we are in… NEWSFLASH.. The democrats caused ALL THIS and noe (in true democrat form) they are trying to fix it by throwing massive amounts of money at it and building the government to the point of a socialist state.. are you aware that this bill introduces national healthcare AND a government study group wil be formed to determine what is and isn’t soct effective ( its based on the british model).. that means you and your doctor do not decide what health care you are intitled to.. a cgovernment committee does.. are you aware that the white house today anounced that probably 2 trillion more will be needed immediately… Let see bush spent 4 trillion in 8 years, this administration is going to spend that much in 8 weeks…Wake up people.. or kiss your country goodbye…

In 2006 the Republicans ran Congress and had the chairs of every committee.
They won the party line vote in committee but never brought any legislation to the floor for voting even though they had clear majorities.
The idea that Democrat told Republicans to sit down and shut up and they willfully obeyed is laughable.

Mr. Obama, you are being “judged” for pushing a trillion dollar pork package (“$6.2 billion for home weatherization, $100 million for children to learn green construction, $50 million for port modernization water and wastewater infrastructure needs in Guam, $50 million for the NEA, the National Endowment for the Arts and should I mention the millions planned for frisbee golf courses?) which creates few jobs and borrowing the money from China which, will make the people depending on his socialistic “big government” plans for decades to come, and lying to the public by not calling it “pork”. Today, After the bailout package is passed, then Obama openly admits the package may not work as well as it is intended. Obama and his wasteful spending may be your “hero” but, he is not mine.

T..By Obama’s own admission, during his press conference, he stated that ALL our problems began when the banking industry began flooding our system with EASY loans another name for those loans were sub-prime loans which began with the Clinton administration and the Barney Franks of the House and Senate. Therefore, the Democrats created the problem and the Bush Republicans ignore the problem..Obama is trying to correct the problems with this so called stimulus bill. Whatever the outcome, the Dems signed off on this solution, they bought it and now must take sole responsibility for it.. GOP House zero votes GOP Senate 3 votes..

Obama should step down.

“I expect to be judged by results.”
You will be judged Obi-Wan and you won’t be able to hide behind your long winded monologs and empty promises.

The Republicans seem more interested in NOT AGREEING with our ELECTED president than they are about us.

Posted by: Mare | February 10, 2009, 10:16 pm 10:16 pm

Obama was right last night when he said the Republicans are mad because they don’t get any credit for the $350 billion tax cut in this bill.

Hey Mr. President, how about Gift Cards for the illegals. too bad you didn’t think of it eh. Well maybe on the next round of stimulus goodies.

I agree Obama should be judge by results but when is the Bush excuse ever going to stop? When is he going to fully transition from the campaign mode to being a leader? It is getting old. For now, I don’t see any leadership and accountability in the Obama administration and the Democrats. I hope he does not blame Bush for the plunge in the market today.

Now waite a minute, On the campaign trail Obama said HE was going to bring Change to Washington, HE was going to shake things up in Washington! Now HE says well, the plans not perfect, it came from Washington, sounds like Washington is Obamas Favorite excuse! Sounds like NO CHANGE to me!!!!

Posted by: commonsense | February 11, 2009, 12:05 am 12:05 am

Hmmm, sounds like Obama is expecting to be replaced in 4 years! Maybe he is Looking forward to it Already? Where’s All the Hope and YEEEESSSSS WE CAN????

Everybody is talking about fixing the current economic downturn, but the economic downturn is actually a fix for too much of the money supply being put into investment vehicles with effectively no value. What we are experiencing is the whiplash effect from people realizing that these bad mortgages securitized as higher rated investment vehicles are essentially worthless. The money supply is contracting back towards where it really should be, but like a pendulum, it will go further than the ideal point before swinging back around. I would contend that we are past the point where the government can exert positive force without causing another even higher abnormal upswing resulting in an even worse downswing than the current crisis. At this point, the best thing the government could do is stop increasing the money supply artificially and work on improving underlying value. The best way the government could improve underlying value is to decrease taxes and government spending gradually. It wouldn’t hurt if they also streamlined laws and government processes instead of piling on top of the bureaucratic legal pile.

So far Obama has shown that he has a very thin skin. He doesn’t like any opposing views and basically wants to shut down any debate. “The time for talk is over” Can you imagine? I wouldn’t even say something that disrespectful to my kid.
I find it hard to believe that he will allow anyone to say that his plan failed. He will not take responsibility and will blame someone else (those anti-bi partisan republicans)

Posted by: ddd | February 11, 2009, 12:56 am 12:56 am

Well, Mr. Obama, so far, we cannot judge you by any “results” but, by the massive pork project you just passed and by your corrupt, tax-evading nominees.

Posted by: Mihann | February 11, 2009, 2:32 am 2:32 am

Rather than act like their isn’t a problem( George Bush) or sweet talk us ( Bill Clinton) President Obama is very honest and forth coming about his agenda and openly admits his mistakes and imperfections. You haters can hate all you want. I respect President Obama for his honesty and openness and you stupid people that are soooo against him why is it that you aren’t able to figure out that he is actually and really concerned about the middle class and underprivledged. He wants to help and plans to help. This is why he was labeled a socialist. He wants every American to have a fair chance.Anyone who doesnt see that is a moron.

……”I won’t lie to you” ….Wonder how many times Obama will EAT those words over the next 4 yrs??? Gotta get a copy of that video to play for him and his campaigning committee next time they are in my town again. What an Eloquent Idiot.

After reading all the snark, foul, insensitive, brutal remarks over the last few months on this site alone from the Obama haters about Obama & his family, I would not be surprised that Obama would be tired already.
He has to deal with a bunch of old heads in the government who wants to keep doing the same thing over & over again but yet expecting different results year after year. They opposing side only cares about their rich buddies not the working middle class/small business owners who actually fuels the economy. Then you have the few (which seems to be a lot of them) ungrateful, non-opened minded, hates change, loves dispare, unhopeful, no love in their hearts (you can’t have love with the mess I have been reading), tired, been kicked down by their own party & too dumb to realize it, whinny, foolish americans that I would not want another 4 years of that mess either!
Hang in the Obama because when your plan works, which it will maybe not in all areas but in the majority, if you are up for the challenge the American people who want & need change to continue will do the right thing! That’s if you will accept another 4 years to continue the path of real change. Thanks for not vacationing on the first 6 months of your presidency and rolling up your sleeves and actually working for all Americans, whether they want it or not.

“Doing nothing is not an option. You didn’t send me to Washington to do nothing.”
Unless doing something is worse than doing something.
Like now.

Dear “Joyful” & “TV”,
Do you get that “tingly feeling down your leg” when the Messiah spreads his socialist “share the wealth” message to you? When he tells you the first of his trillion dollar bailout bills actually creates new jobs? Or, when the Messiah tells you that “big business” is destroying the country? If you really want to “tingle” Google “Hugo Chavez” and compare their messages.

Obama is failing miserably. Obama needs to step down.

Posted by: Gotterdammerung | February 11, 2009, 9:05 am 9:05 am

Joyful – Understand now how Bush felt the last 8 years????? This stimulus pkg, by the way, contains much more that the American people need to know about like a little statment regarding our health services that was slipped in by Daschle. Doctors won’t be able to prescribe procedures on their own. If it’s expensive and the person is a senior, it probably won’t get done! Great! Just what we need. Socialized medicine is on the way!

Posted by: M. Smith | February 11, 2009, 9:12 am 9:12 am

What a two faced liar we picked for a leader. He’s went from a “Hope”, “Change” and “Yes we Can” message -to- a “Dispair”, “Same old People” and ” We probably can’t” attitude. This guy’s lost and has about as much vision for this country as a teenager.

Posted by: AmericanPie | February 11, 2009, 9:55 am 9:55 am

Every President is judged on results. But when the results turn out to be bad, all they ever do is shrug and mouth the same old platitudes of “I did my best” and “I’m who the people wanted” and feel compeletely vindicated for the disaster. Even if they accept blame how will that help to undo the damamge? No wonder that it’s alwasy “D*** the torpedoes and full speed ahead” with them.

Posted by: Publius | February 11, 2009, 10:16 am 10:16 am

You’re still here, I’m still here and the world is still here. Therefore, the Messiah (which you & others are blaspheming the name of God by using His name for comedic/spiteful purposes) has not returned!
Trust me if He was here right now, no one would be worrying about what the president or anybody else is doing. They would be to busy begging Jesus for forgiveness.

The job is controlling him.
He’s not in control of the
job.
Obamba is in over his head.

Finally a President that claims responsibility rather than just credit.
I know that must be dumbfounding for right wingers who wouldn’t know what integrity was if it bit them on the nose.

Posted by: Ryan C | February 11, 2009, 12:29 pm 12:29 pm

Ok, thinned skinned people need to take their blood pressure meds. President Obama has done nothing of value. He has issued an order to close Gitmo, stop ongoing trials, release terrorist responsible for USS Cole bombing, give big labor control of stimulus funds, stop employers from informing employees of negatives of unions, stopped off-shore drilling, stopped other drilling and declared that the government not the people is the answer to the woes created by government. Well, maybe I was wrong he has done a lot but nothing of value to keep America strong. He really has brought change to Washington. He has elevated Chicago politics to a national level. Wonder why he did not nominate Blago for a cabinet post. Been listening to Press Secretary Gibbs while typing this and he has said nothing of consequence. Last thought, every time I hear hurry, hurry, hurry it is usually a scam. God Bless America because we need it!

Posted by: 1post3 | February 11, 2009, 2:36 pm 2:36 pm

I like folks who comment here who say Obama has “integrity”. Do all you liberals folks get that “tingly feeling down your legs” when he speaks? Let’s just see what feeling you all have for Obama after 4 years of wasteful spending then, paying higher taxes for Obama’s “big government”, socialistic plans for you.

Posted by: Mihann | February 11, 2009, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm

The people most adamantly against Obama HAVE jobs: Republican Senator Richard Shelby, oxycontin addict Rush Limbaugh, Republican Congressman John Boehner, etc. They are going to be fine no matter what happens to the rest of us. They can afford to make Americans continue to suffer purely for their own political benefit.

Posted by: dmjakers | February 11, 2009, 3:00 pm 3:00 pm

The entertainment never ceases. I see someone complaining how bad right wing nut jobs have treated Obama and family but do not think anything about how viciously Sharah Palin was attacked on inuedo. Her family was vilified but that was fair? Her family had said nothing about policy or election but Michelle had and therfore was open to criticism.

Posted by: 1post3 | February 11, 2009, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

I do not agree with the way our government is handling things right now, but do not hate anyone just wish they would take a closer look at the real problems. The new deal was a bust, government hurt more than helped, unemployed rose more after government intervention. I do feel for those who have lost their jobs, mine is a risk, and hope that the country will recover. I am not confident that this stimulus(ie porkulus) package plan will work. I fear it will be the demise of America as we know it. Think about the salesman who say we must hurry, we can’t make this offer all day, bugs will eat your ears off, ect. Slow down! We need stimulus but not pork or special interest payback.

The results are in, Mr. President, gov’t hasn’t changed and we’re not even 100 days into your reign. Methinkgs the future looks bleak.

Posted by: Brent | February 11, 2009, 4:09 pm 4:09 pm

Obama should demand that consumer credit card rates be cut to a maximum of 8%.
‘Minimum payments’ should be limited as well.
It would do a lot to ease people’s anxiety and would be only fair, the way the predatory banking industry has bled this country.
