Obama White House: Daschle Made “Serious Mistake”

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs just now at his briefing said of former Senator Tom Daschle’s failure to pay more than $120,000 in taxes until last month, "It was a serious mistake, one that he caught and remedied. We still think that he is the best person to do health care reform."

Asked by ABC News if President Obama fears that Daschle and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner’s failure to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes undercuts President Obama’s call for an "era of responsibility" — or any future tax increases the administration may propose — Gibbs said no.

"The President does not believe it undercuts their ability to move forward on an agenda that matters to the American people," Gibbs said.

If you ordinary Americans made such a “serious mistake”, you go to the Big House. If you work for our Greatest Leader, you go to the White House.
Yes, He Can!

Daschle didn’t make ANY kind of “mistake”, and the whole country knows it.
1. Daschle should step down from consideration, or be VOTED down.
2. As for the action already taken on GEITHNER, the IRS should forgive ALL people with bad audits, etc. When an “ordinary” person makes a tax “mistake”, he or she is hounded forEVER, driven to bankruptcy, etc.

jpt quotes Gibbs, Obama’s mouthpiece:
” … the American people,”
The ONLY time these crooks wax populist about “the American people” is when they’re lying, in trouble, or both.
Ordinarily, there’s no talk about the “people”, or the “citizens”, and only an occasional bow to “the taxpayers”.
In order for corporate like you-know-who to exist in such numbers, there are MILLIONS of “the American people” who work their entire lives, without making enough $ to PAY taxes.

What does it take to disqualify an Obama cabinet pick?
Good God y’all.
“Absolutely” nothin’, say it, say it, say it, say it again,
The Cabinet of Corruption continues to be built.

Era of responsibility? Silly Jake. Taxes are for the Little People.

Posted by: Mesquito | February 2, 2009, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

Actually Obama could bring in significant new revenue just through the “mistakes” that a fortunately found when vetting his cabinet.

Americans made a serious mistake with Obama. Doesn’t Obama think anything through

“The Cabinet of Corruption continues to be built.”
If Daschle’s confirmed, the country should just shut down. If the Congress can’t do it, the “American people” Gibbs is so chatty about probably CAN: all it would take is a few broken down cars, wherever people gather — freeway interchanges would be good — for teach-ins on how uh MONEY works for those who have any.

“Americans made a serious mistake with Obama.”
Yes they DID.
“Doesn’t Obama think anything through”
The Puppet isn’t THERE to think. He’s there to look pretty (and as “black” as possible, to head off full-tilt revolution), and not to worry His pretty little head about His masters’ corporatist/fascist programme.

We made a tax boo boo last year and ended up paying a bundle…funny they didn’t give us any special treatment, no one waived our penalties and interest. Guess you have to be ordained by the big O for that to happen.

Cocaine suppositories in the morning, vodka at lunch.

samhiguchi”…no one waived our penalties and interest. Guess you have to be ordained by the big O for that to happen.”
You keep repeating this lie. DASCHLE PAID THE SAME PENALTIES AND INTEREST AS ANYONE WOULD HAVE.
Why do you keep lying over and over about this?

samhiguchi – you should petition Obama for a cabinet position.

Take the “normally” grim and halting Gibbs: today, he certainly appeared to be zipped on SOMEthing. (Will ONE member of the “media” remark on this astonishing personality/affect change? Likely not.)
It might be time for daily drug tests for politicians — er, “public servants”. Whatever substances they’re into have clearly moved them FAR from any memory that they’re supposed to be in DC representing the PEOPLE, not proclaim each others’ “integrity” or kow-tow to corporate hustlers.

If PBO did not nominate the FSML (former senate majority leader), he would have been $110K richer. Now, not only the FSML lost cash, but also he has to explain himself, which really has nothing to explain about – he was caught.
Think about it, PBO is so smart – he is able to identify all kinds of lobbyists and tax cheaters in his administration.

reality check,
What’s the matter, water getting to hot for you? Come on now…defend the tax cheats!…Defend the tax cheats!
Liberals have been shooting their mouths off for years about issues with the previous administration, including our new President.
Stange how when it their boy with the soiled pants, he doesn’t stink!

Actually VDH has an item today where he predicts the beginning of the end of Gibbs at the hand of the Silence of the Rahms:
“There is in Washington now the Scott McClellan Iron Law: no prior friendship, service, or connection with the president ever justifies putting a press secretary out there who is both evasive and inept, and who will not improve, no matter how many private assurances of confidence and loyalty for past service the president conveys. I think Rahm Emanuel will have to intervene soon. Being a tough inside fighter is not the same as being an adept and direct press secretary.”

Mike_C: “defend the tax cheats!…Defend the tax cheats!”
Right, because with Iraq, Afghanistan, the banking crisis, the record debt, and going into the second year of recession, the important thing to debate is Daschle’s taxes.
I thought it was dumb when it was about Republican’s not paying the required taxes for their illegal housekeeper, and I think its dumb now that it’s about amended tax returns. Like most of the country, it sounds like reality_check has moved on and is more interested in actual performance.

Irony,
Nice one!, I went back and looked at the text of that one in the congressional record. The context of his statement was in regard to the IRS being too heavy handed at that time. The discussion went on to relate several expereinces of people who had tax issues and got lambasted by the IRS. Too Bad Mr Daschle had not received that kind of treatment himself!!!

Posted by: Mike_C | February 2, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Since this just happened last summer, and taxes aren’t due until 2009, then Daschle really hasn’t failed paying his taxes. This falls under a 1099 report, and is paid in 2009 in April, August or October. If not then, then amendments are made to pay with interest in 2010, or 2011. Many accountants pay taxes this way and actually prefer to pay behind rather than not have cash flow on hand. Stop being so judgmental and so ignorant to tax laws that are available to businesses and individuals, and IRS is aware of these tax practices. If you don’t understand math, then stop “barking”. If you don’t understand taxes, then get a CPA or a reliable tax accountant. It’s quite simple.

jhw539,
As yo uand many of your liberal buddies keep reminding us get over it you won!!!
This is not about the past you bufoon, its about NOW!!!
Why is it you hyprocrits who blasted the previous administration do not have the stones to stand up and saying NO to Obama’s tax cheating administration?
Try living in the present man, its time to move forward, but lets leave the corrupt ones behind!

gg51,
If its such a common thing, wht is Daschle himself saying it was a SERIOUS MISTAKE ?
Keep going, …defend the tax cheats!….defend the tax cheats!

Posted by: Mike_C | February 2, 2009, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

When I first heard that Daschle paid $120,000 in back taxes for a loaned car from a friend I thought “what kind of car was he loaned?” and wondered about the government taxing you on the use of a friend’s car, but then I saw it was primarily from not reporting consulting fees. That changed my mind on Daschle because anyone knows you pay taxes on earned income. In my mind he is a tax evader and is only amending his return because he is caught. If this is truly a time for change then he needs to follow Bill Richardson and bow out and Obama needs to accept. It’s time for honesty to become a requirement of government.

Gg51 …. Daschle really hasn’t failed paying his taxes.
What do you call it then. Oh its ok he is a Democrat. They are racist and above the law

Posted by: rangler | February 2, 2009, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

The problem is if a Democrats have created an EVIL GENIE they let out of the bottle and can not put back called racism that is turning around to attack them if they do not support Obama

Posted by: out of touch | February 2, 2009, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

The most serious mistake here is the one by Obama’s vetting team!! Then of course, there is the lying and dishonesty of Daschle!! How could he not know, and not inform the team about this grevious “mistake” when he was actually trying to rip off the IRS. An error in accounting is one thing, trying to get away with benefits worth over a hundred thousand is not an oversight, but fraud. He should just take himself out of the running, he has done the greatest disservice to the administration and to all taxpayers. He can never be trusted again. Whatever is now said in order to cover up is nothing but a bunch of BS. So Mr. Daschle, if you have any honor or integrity left, please remove yourself. What an error in judgment of the Obama vetting team!!! Loyalty is one thing, but to keep on propping up the undeserved is another. It may yet come back to haunt the administration.

“That changed my mind on Daschle because anyone knows you pay taxes on earned income.”
Apparently NOT, NOT if your up for a positon in the Obama Administration! They just do a wink wink on this stuff! Yep…Real “CHANGE” shoved up America’s butt !

Posted by: Mike_C | February 2, 2009, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

Putting aside all the vitriolic comments from both sides, I want to know how WE allow a member of either house to be on the payroll of a company with a million $/yr salary and a wife who is a lobbyist while he holds office. It goes way beyond Daschle and into both parties. These connections are simply unacceptable to me. If it doesn’t constitute gross conflict of interest I don’t know what does. As long as we fail to make these jack*sses accountable we will continue to get more of the same.

Actually we owe them for at least forcing Daschle & Geithner to pay up !!!
The biggest mistake is Obama’s for continuing to push both of them thru the process! America deserves better than this farce!

“As long as we fail to make these jack*sses accountable we will continue to get more of the same.”
Unfortunately, the “we” you are refering to is only the people in the relevant district of the particular senator or representative. So long as there are districts like Barney Frank’s now & Daschle’s in the past, the rest of us have to put up with these clowns!

Not correct at all. The car service imputed benefit is 05, 06 and 07. The $83K of “forgotten” income is 2007. The charitable deductions that werent, are ’05, ’06, and ’07.
Daschle has had to file amended for these years.

Of course Obama’s nomination of tax cheats to cabinet seats does not undercut his call for an “era of responsibility.” Reasons: 1) Responsibility and paying taxes is for the little people, not the great people in the American aristocracy (aka Congress, Cabinet, upper echelons of Civil Service). 2) Obama cannot be undercut, being the new Messiah – the reincarnation simultaneously of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Martin L. King Jr, and Jesus Christ.

Pretty obvious BO owes Dashcle for something.
Obama is a con man with no integrity.
He obviously isn’t worried what this will do to the reputation of his administration.
And why should Obama worry–the media and his cult followers excuse absolutely every slimeball decision he makes.

Exactly how do tax cheats, billions in pork, a cabinet full of lobbyist, and kissing Ahmadinejad’s **** improve America’s image?

Posted by: bailey | February 2, 2009, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm

We are accepting Cabinet members who, in some cases, did not pay thousands of dollars in taxes and not being held accountable for penalties nor jail time…California, my home, with holding our tax refunds, with no interest paid to filers..and these are the people we elected to manage this economic crises?? Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law..If President Obama plans to give a pass to people who cheat you are no matter than some Presidents before you..What’s next??

Posted by: Parallax View | February 2, 2009, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

Obama should sign a new bill called the ‘Daschle/Geithner bill’ which forgives all tax cheats and removes their penalties.

I can’t believe the reports coming out every day. This Presidency is a joke. With the cabinet appoinees Obama is making it sends a pretty clear message to everyone today, not just the youth that you can get away with anything. Geithner and Daschle made mistakes right – my ass they did. They just got caught and now are apologizing. I don’t care about apologies or hearing their reasons. Be men and do what’s right step down or back out of the appointment. Come on for once do what is right. Oh I forgot what’s right is now wrong and anything that would be considered wrong is cool. I pray that millions of people can ban together and verge upon Washington. Perhaps Obama needs some “American’s.” to show up at his door. Yea the one he “doesn’t have to pay property taxes on” like the rest of us. But he thinks we all should cough up more money to give to those that haven’t earned any for themselves. What’s wrong with this Country?

Tom Daschle is an example of politicians who talk a good talk but think they do not have to obide by the law of the land. He shouldn’t be rewarded by Obama but should have to pay for his criminal activity.
President Obama, don’t even think of taking your name in the gutter by allowing Daschle into your cabinet.

Yep, make so much money, you really don’t care where it goes, or how much you spend. But have someone from the real working class, miss a payment to the IRS and its take the money out of your saving, granish your wages, or put you in jail. But have a ton of money and its a slap on the wrist and give you a bigger paying job that you will not have to do a thing at..Yep, Change won’t happen in this workers life..

So, what would have happened if Bush had put a tax cheat in his cabinet?
It would be just another thing for America to hate about him, because they know nothing about politics. They just listen to what the TV says and go “Yeah, thats right its all Bush’s fault that the economy is still dropping three months into Obama’s term”, etc, etc.
THE MEDIA IS DOING ALL OF YOU’RE THINKING FOR YOU,! WAKE UP!!
