Obamas Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Restaurant of Oprah’s Chef
President Obama and the first lady are celebrating Valentine’s Day with a meal at Chicago’s posh Table Fifty-Two Restaurant on West Elm, Chef Art Smith’s signature restaurant.
Raised on the Georgia-Florida border — as a boy he taught his pet pig to eat acorns so he wouldn’t have to pick them up himself — Smith is personal chef to Oprah Winfrey.
The Web site for the restaurant says his cuisine comes from "the finest organic farms in the Midwest" and ranges "from Low-Country Shrimp with Stone-Ground Grits and Open-Faced Pulled Pork Sandwiches to Pistachio-Crusted Chicken Breast with Coconut-Ginger-Chili Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank with Parsnip-Garlic Puree with Roasted Baby Carrots."
Smith says he approaches cooking and dining in the grand Southern tradition of his mother, aunts and grandmother: "Use the freshest seasonal ingredients, prepare them lovingly and share them with your family and loved ones."

I used to support President Barack Obama, but I can’t believe that he would rather have dinner with his wifey than go help the children freezing to death in Kentucky this Valentines Day. This is just like George Bush on Hurricane Katrina. Same thing, no change. We need a President that cares about the little guys, not tax them into oblivion so he can give his billionaire banker friends $900,000,000,000.00. We need Palin. PUMA!

Obamcrat for Palin – good point. I was pretty stunned when 9 days went by in Kentucky and half a million people still didn’t have power or water and FEMA wasn’t doing much and the media gave Obama a complete pass on it. Obama never even mentioned Kentucky or the people suffering there.
Apparently he was too busy hiring more tax cheats and lobbyists to serve in his cabinet to worry about the little guy in Kentucky.

Obama has stated that he will head back to Chicago about every six weeks. I guess cutting back is just for us, and not The One.
Imagine if GWB had headed out to his ranch EVERY 6 WEEKS? Liberal and media heads would be exploding.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 29, 2009) –
President Barack Obama last night approved Gov. Steve Beshear’s request for an emergency Presidential Disaster Declaration that will expedite assistance to people in need across the commonwealth.
“President Obama called me last night to express his concern about the plight facing our state and many of our people. I appreciate the president’s quick response to our request for a disaster declaration,” Gov. Beshear said as he traveled throughout Western Kentucky to meet with local officials and survey damage to the region. “We will move quickly to bring power generators, communications equipment and debris removal equipment into the region to help restore power and protect our people in their time of need.”

Regardless whether you voted for the man or not, I didn’t, it is none of our business what he does in his free time. Or where he eats. Wealth envy is something society breeds into people, and it is a very nasty, disgusting thing. His responsibility to us is to do his job. Our responsibility to ourselves is to do our jobs. If everyone did this, and quit worrying about what someone was “giving” them, we would all be better off. This country has turned into a contingent of victims. Waiting for their next handout. I do think Pres. Obama has been given a pass, in re Kentucky, he waited 9 days to even comment on the situation. However, just like with Pres. Bush, it is a local government’s job first. The local government must first ask for assistance from the federal government. Which is what people didn’t/couldn’t understand when Katrina happened. It started with a failure at the local level. Starting with the city government, then state. As for Obama’s dinner out, all President’s dine out, if they so chooose. Most don’t eat at Burger King.

So let me get this straight: The President flies AF1 to Chicago to close down city streets so people can’t get thru, to go to a restaurant which presumably had to deny all paying customers so he could go out to dinner, all on our dime during “the worst financial crisis since the last depression”.
Heck of a job electing this guy liberals!

William – that’s funny because the Kentucky emergency director says they are five days into the ice storm and no sign of FEMA.
It’s a shame Obama never flew over Kentucky to survey the damage. I remember when Bush was excorciated if he didn’t immediately fly over damaged areas.

So you can imagine how stunned I was to read in the NYT that Obama’s senior advisor, David Axelrod, said that Obama keeps the White House at greenhouse levels. He said Obama likes it warm and you “could grow orchids in here”.
How’s that for hypocrisy?

No timee to debate it! I want it on my desk now! Yet he goes off on vacation and can’t be bothered to sign it till Tuesday! I don’t care if he wants to have dinner w/ his wife but the man
is so stuck on himself he doesn’t even see the inconvenience he puts others through. Shut down Chicago airport, keep flying all those ‘green miles’ and putting his ‘green footprints’ everywhere! Right, hypocrisy at it’s best! Joke! How does anyone believe a word he or his staff utters? The more he says it’s transparent, the MORE it’s NOT! The coverage is similar to the coverage of a trained dog. LOOK, he can walk on his hind feet! LOOK, he can jump through a hoop!
What they are saying is that they really expected Obama and Michelle to trash the White House, act like gangsters, and generally provide a spectacle of low-class behavior.
Maybe if the press realizes what they are doing they will give us some NEWS.

Kathy, dear, let’s be careful with our facts if we are going to get snippy at other posters for supposedly not keeping their facts straight. I see that someone has already provided you with the Obama 72 degrees quote. Now let me address some of your other points:
You began, “Peach- I bet you read it on the vitriolic Michelle Malkin’s blog. She apparently ran with the NYT article.” Umm, some of us actually read the NYT article. Are you implying that the Axelrod quote came from the blog rather than the NYT? If not, what does it matter where Peach got her info, if that info is factually correct? I have never read Ms. Malkin’s blog, so I don’t know how she “ran” with the article, but I read the article and picked up on the quote right away myself. I’m not surprised a conservative columnist/ blogger would pick up on it as well.
Then you started to go off the tracks in a major way, writing, “Did you also read that he comes to work at 9:00 AM, after he’s worked out and helped send the girls off the school. In contrast, Bush came in two hours later, then later slipped out after lunch for a workout. Obama also woks till 10 PM. It’s a relief to see someone with a good work ethic back in the WH.” Umm, let’s check the Bush Derangement Syndrome at the door, shall we, and look at the facts. In your rush to make value judgments about the two presidents, you misrepresented Bush’s schedule, stating that he came in 2 hours after 9 am, that is, 11 a.m. I think you got confused while reading the NYT article. (Maybe you just got the highlights and paraphrases off some blog?*G*) The article clearly states, “Although his presidency is barely a week old, some of Mr. Obama’s work habits are already becoming clear. He shows up at the Oval Office shortly before 9 in the morning, roughly two hours later than his early-to-bed, early-to-rise predecessor.” TWO HOURS LATER– get it. Bush was famous for being at his desk by 7 AM, NOT 11. See, the article is saying that Bush started earlier in the day and that Obama works later at night. Different strokes, you know? And then you snarl about Bush exercising every day, when the article points out that Obama works out each morning. The only difference seems to be that Bush would work in the early hours then take an exercise break while Obama exercises first thing in the morning and then goes to work. Again, different people have different styles. One schedule is not superior to the other. Please note, I am not criticizing Obama for his schedule– I could care less whether he exercises before or after his daily briefings, believe me.
Having finished venting about Bush, you then end with a justification for President Obama doing whatever he wants, regardless of what he urges others to do. Guess you really do believe, unlike Obama, that there are two sets of rules. You said, “And if keeping it warm in the WH makes him for comfortable with those long days he pulls, then so what?” So what? Peach’s point was that such behavior was hypocritical given his lecturing Americans on wasting energy and expecting the rest of the world to be okay with that. So your “Besides, Peach, do you really think there is only one thermostat for the entire Whitehouse?” is really wide of the mark. It does not matter whether he only keeps his own office at hothouse temps or whether he keeps the whole building that way– it matters that he said we should not be selfish with our energy use and “heat our homes at 72 degrees and expect the rest of the world to say okay. That’s not going to happen. That’s not leadership.” The president is the one who said that was not leadership, not peach and not me.

Is he not allowed to spend time with his wife now that he is president? His wife is a part of his family. How can he not spend time with her?
I don’t understand the comments of people here. His ‘vacation’ is the weekend and President’s day. He took his wife out to dinner and you can argue that it is the tax payer money but just so you know, the POTUS actually receives a salary, not to mention Obama had top selling books for ages.
He has addressed the Kentucky situation and will be signing the stimulus package on Tuesday. People need to stop nitpicking. So he goes to the office later than Bush. Does that mean he’s horrible? He got more done the past few weeks than Bush has done in ages. And for those of you who think hypocrisy is new and shocking- you’re only kidding yourself.
Posted by: Kuhu | February 15, 2009, 10:59 pm 10:59 pm
Moderate- That was quite a lengthy reply. You’re correct- the NYT article said he came to work 2 hours earlier as president, but didn’t state what time he left. Maybe his work ethics improved from when he was a governor and made it to wok at 9:00 AM, took 2 hours for a lunch and run, then left work at 5PM. CNN had him at a six hour day.
The reason I brought up Michelle Malkin is that typically, the Obama Derangement Syndrome responses are copied from the similar ilk of Limbaugh and Drudge. I freely bring up the pejorative since you were so quick to attach the Bush Derangement Syndrome on my concerns, By your quickness to apply and define it, about 80% of the American population have it. I’m referring to consistent polls of disapproval, and especially to the 70% who want an investigation of the Bush administration.
On the basis of a very subjective Axlerod remark that was meant to be joke, the Obama opponents are crying hypocrite. What’s going to be the next bone for them to gnaw on?
BTW, your approach in your response seems Rovian, as if by discrediting one mistake you can discredit the person and concerns. And I have to admit that your nom de keyboard is glaringly inaccurate.

Kathy,
A quick response to your response before I go off to my day job at the university. I will endeavor to be brief. As you point out, my posts tend to be long–I regularly lament that, like Blaise Pascal, I did not have time to write a shorter letter. *G*
You spoke of BDS and ODS– I despair of knee-jerk responses from both corners of the political ring. We seem to define the terms differently, however. I do not accuse folks of BDS simply because they are Democrats or because they say something negative about Bush. My emphasis is on the “deranged” part– there are those around here who seem compelled to bring up bush and shower hatred upon him at every opportunity, usually making statements with only a weak attachment to reality. When you insisted that Bush came to work 2 hours later than Obama, thus at 11 am, I jumped to the conclusion that you were not applying logic and recognizing the silliness of such an accusation. I assumed you were so blinded by hatred of Bush that you were oblivious to the ridiculousness of that charge. My apologies for leaping to conclusions and accusing you of BDS.
You conclude with, “BTW, your approach in your response seems Rovian, as if by discrediting one mistake you can discredit the person and concerns.” I was not playing gotcha as you suggest, and do not feel that pointing out a mistake discredits someone’s entire argument or concerns. I was simply pointing out that you were attacking Peach using facts from an article you yourself had not read carefully enough. I was not attempting to suggest that readers should take from that one sloppy argument you made that you are a person who should be disregarded entirely.
Finally, you say, “And I have to admit that your nom de keyboard is glaringly inaccurate.” Actually, no, it isn’t. I am indeed a moderate, and I think many long-time readers of this site would vouch for that fact. I know that moderation gets a bad name and that Mr. Limbaugh claims that moderates simply lack the courage of their convictions and do not stand for anything. (I said I didn’t listen to him regularly or get talking points from him– I never said I was unaware of the man or his ideas) I have always considered myself a moderate, however. Acquaintances who skew hard right accuse me of being a leftie and those who skew hard left accuse me of being a right-winger. I guess it’s a matter of perception and the angle from which I am observed.
For the record, I am fiscally conservative, mildly hawkish (i know, sounds oxymoronical but I stand by the characterization) in foreign policy, relatively liberal socially (prochoice and not overly concerned about gun control, for example). On many matters, such as the death penalty, I struggle and can not say that I have a fixed position at all. I do not like boxes, for myself or for others. Life is just not that simple, usually.
Posted by: moderate | February 16, 2009, 9:35 am 9:35 am
Kathy, before I walk out the door, let me add one more idea to our ongoing discussion. You graciously admit your statement about the start of Bush’s work day was in error, but you still want to say that “barry works harder than george.” Does President Obama spend more time in the office than President Bush did? I do not think we can really know whether or not that is true, nor do I really care. They make decisions, not widgets, so their work resists quantification.
But also, as many have observed here, the job of president is a 24/7 position and either man does/did a lot of the ‘work” of being president in setting other than the Oval Office.
Let me relate an example from my own experience. I am a professor (and a small business co-owner, which is another story for another day). My spouse is the driving force behind our small business. This morning, he got up early as he always does and was in his shop by 6:00 am, building and repairing things. He will be at that most of the day and by the end of the day will have a pile of material to show for his labors. Me? I slept in until 7. I will be in the classroom later today, which most of my students think is the only place I do any work. *G* Luckily, my husband knows better. But I digress. I did not go into the office right away, but while I was walking the dog and taking my shower, I composed a homework assignment in my head. While I was indulging my internet fix and posting here, I opened a file on my computer where I have jotted several ideas for an upcoming lecture. As I drive into town in a few moments, I will rehearse my first lecture of the day. In some ways, I have been at work since I got up this morning, but to outward appearances, I have not. Has my spouse worked harder than I have? Physically, yes. But that will always be true. Has he spent more hours on the job than I have? That’s open to interpretation. At the end of the day, I will not have anything easily quantifiable to show for the hours I have spent “professoring.” Does that mean I have not done my job?

Moderate-It’s not so much the 500 days spent at the Crawford ranch that has so many concerned about GWB’s work ethic, but matters like his administration not responding to an Aug. 6, 2001PDB, which stated Bin Laden was determined to strike in the US with possible hijacking attempts. Or Bush playing golf and going to McCain’s birthday party on the day the New Orleans levee broke. No matter your profession or work, you are expected to take a preventative approach –like a restaurant manager seeing to that the food supplies and products are adequate for the public, or an aviation mechanic helping to insure a safe flight. Many Americans have seen neither an adequate preventative approach or emergency response to the emergencies the nation’s faced.
If you don’t like boxes, then don’t be so quick to throw around terms like the Bush Derangement Syndrome to perspectives and opinions that are personally disliked. It’s not much better than the rallying cries of baby killer that have been directed towards me on this blog.

I just want to know where the outrage was when President Bush spent nearly 3 years of his presidency between his ranch in Crawford and Camp David? It seems most of the people responding angrily to this post are either hypocrites or are just plain jealous. He is the president of the United States and he decided to take his wife out to a nice dinner because IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY! Both the president and his wife came from humble beginnings, studied hard, worked hard, and are now living the ULTIMATE American Dream. Are people this angry because here you have two young black people enjoying a nice night out at a good restaurant that most of the angry responders to this post can’t afford to eat at? People, lets disagree with president because of policy and substance and not because we are jealous of 2 black people who made it big and you haven’t.
