On C-SPAN, Historians Rate W the 7th Worst President Ever
This morning we learn that C-SPAN has surveyed historians to again come up with a President’s Day ranking of commanders-in-chief.
Fittingly, for this Abe-a-licious year, the 16th president comes in at #1, with Honest Abe Lincoln retaining his top slot.
He’s followed by George Washington, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, and Harry S Truman in the top five slots. JFK, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, and Ronald Reagan finish out the Top Ten.
The worst president, as judged by the panel of historians, is James Buchanan.
Second worst — Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson.
Third worst – Franklin Pierce. Fourth worst – William Henry Harrison. Fifth worst – Warren G. Harding. Sixth worst – Millard Fillmore.
And there he is, George W. Bush, ranked as 7th worst. (8th worst is John Tyler.)
Reagan, Clinton and George H.W. Bush have all advanced in rankings since the last time C-SPAN did this survey, in 2000. Bill Clinton back then was ranked 21st; he’s now 15th. Reagan went from 11 to 10. Bush Sr. went from 20 to 18.
Jimmy Carter, interestingly went down — from 22 to 25.
"Bill Clinton and Ulysses S. Grant aren’t often mentioned in the same sentence – until now," said historian Richard Norton Smith. "Participants in the latest C-SPAN survey of presidential historians have boosted each man significantly higher than in the original survey conducted in 2000. All of which goes to show two things: the fluidity with which presidential reputations are judged, and the difficulty of assessing any president who has only just recently left office."
This all gives me an excuse to show this video of the late great Peter Jennings asking Bill Clinton about the rankings — in particular about Clinton ranking 41st on "moral authority," behind Richard Nixon. Compelling video.
Happy President’s Day.
We miss you, Peter.

What criteria exactly do they use to rank our presidents? Overall ineffectiveness? Their affect on the economy? Their affect on world peace? Their non-caring attitude toward the American people? Their disrespect of the Constitution? Hard to believe Bush wouldn’t be at the top of the list. OK, then, according to this list he’s still the worst president in MY lifetime, and I’m no spring chicken, so that’s saying a lot.
Posted by: tom | February 15, 2009, 11:22 am 11:22 am
Both Carter and Bush have let their country down. This country, at the end of Carter’s term, was so weak, all we saw, for over a year, was Iranians parade American hostages and burn American flags. Day after day, what was Carter’s response? Nothing. The economy was in shambles. Bush was obviously stronger militarily but, in terms of the economy, seemed to stand by and not help in any way. Both were sad presidents. It is easy for those who don’t know, remember, or generally like to hate to make a political statement, will claim Bush was the worst of the two but actually, I feel Carter was the weakest. History in 50 years will remember Carter as the “Iranian hostage” president and Bush as the “9/11″ president.

What an idiotic story. I personally didn’t like W’ and I think he was a horrible president, but how can he be judged against as one the 10 worst? What’s this based on? Public opinion? National debt? How can he be judged against presidents from a hundred years ago? We don’t have accurate records of most of those cats. Who are these historians anyway? Do they know things about the super secret W administration that we don’t know? Can we get some real news stories on here or just this fluff?

Reagan is much overrated, and Clinton underrated. Both men are too fresh in living memory for objectivity to play a role in the rankings, though. Nixon will always be the worst President, unless, God help us, we have another with such contempt for the Constitution as to form a squad of secret police.

Oh please! These rankings are just like the BCS….nothing real about it.
And people are are claiming that Carter is the “worst” probably can’t give a reasons why they think that. Just a bunch of brainwashed partisans who don’t know anything about history and probably go to the internet (echo chamber) to do research and reinforce their ideas.
Peace out.

The worst president in my voting lifetime was “W”. I didn’t judge him in 2000, for which he was fair game, but I came to this conclusion in 2006. I believe Barack will be better. However, judging him within the first 3 1/2 weeks as a “no go” is bit premature and immature. To those hoping the new President fails, they’ll hate even if he does well.

Oh CW, wouldn’t that be your lifelong dream? As a true American, I really hoped “W” would succeed. That the stolen election would somehow prove to be worthwhile. That maybe, we had it wrong and that the Republicans had to push the theft of the election through, so we could see just how wrong we were. Well, that didn’t happen. So now we have a new President. One that I voted for. And all I can do is hope that we got it right. You know, for the sake of our country, I really hope the BEST for its turn around. Cause that’s what true American’s do, WE hope for the best.

There’s certainly a contrast between the historians cited in this report and a Gallup poll taken last week. If I remember correctly, most polled (around 70%) wanted an investigation into the Bush administration. Half of that 70% wanted a criminal level investigation, while the other half wanted an investigation which wouldn’t charge them with criminal acts, similar to the Truth Commission Leahy wants to implement. I think there was a slight tip in the polling towards the criminal investigation.
I addition to contrasting with public opinion, there’s a contrast with the George Mason University poll of a hundred historians. They placed Bush as the historical worst. I wonder what the differences are in the polling between the C-Span and George Mason. I would think the George Mason probably had more PHDs in it for one.

From my personal observation and experience, George W would be the worst in recent history, followed by Ronald Reagan. Bill Clinton, despite his personal shortcomings was THE BEST. The United States (including me personally) flourished under his presidency. As I have often said, Reagan’s goal was to destroy the United States; W’s goal was to destroy the world. And here we sit on the verge.

Harding ended a depression and pardoned Eugene Debs. Unlike virtually all Presidents before and since, he came clean about his Administration scandals, which is why he was poisoned.
Since historians are apologists for the Regime, I’m not surprised they disdain Harding and praise the murderous imperialist Teddy.

Carter was by far the worst President, followed by Clinton who by his failing to take action when the towers were hit in 1993, the “Cole” and several other terrorist events was responsible for 9/11 had Clinton acted like a real President he would have taken action at the first event. Clinton only played to his ratings, he was not concerned about America. Bush at least wanted to keep America and her people safe.

Bush the worst? that is funny. Carter bankrupted the entire country, and was responsible for one of the most humiliating international diplomacy debacles ever with Iran.
Under Regan we were revitalized as a country and brought ourselves back to a justified sense of strength and moral responsibility.
As for GWB, no president in history has ever had to deal with the issues he did of enemy attacks on mainland soil.
Question: Has there been a second 9-11?
Answer: no.
Question: Did we discover additional plots?
Answer: yes
Those of you who blame the president for all the failings must remember that under Pres Bush there was a democratic congress.
I grant you he sometimes misspoke but there is NO ONE in the government who has not done it.
Did you hear about Obama asking how folks liked “HIS spiffy new ride” meaning Air Force 1?

Even IF Bush isn’t “the worst” (and he probably really was), he was really, really terrible–just as his party has been.
Posted by: TFoster | February 15, 2009, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm
Bush is the worst hands down in the last 100 years. Carter was a good man but had a failed administration. He still can’t be compared to G.W. because Carter didn’t break the law, step on our constitution or lie all the time. He never shamed us.
I used to think Reagan was a pretty good president. I have rethought that. I like HIM but he brought about a lot of bad politics and we are reaping the fallout these days for the “Reagan Revolution.”
Obama has the makings of a great president in character and intelligence. He has inherited one of the worst messes in American history so time will tell how well he can negotiate the waters.

Why would the founding leader not be #1?
How do we define leadership?
Whomever doesn’t make waves?
Whomever rocks the boat?
Are leaders visionaries?
Or do leaders do implementation?
Are leaders conflict resolvers?
Are leaders those whom intimidate others into submission?
Are leaders those who lift up others?
People I’ve seen in leadership positions outside of Washington D.C. libel, threaten with force of gun, and hide behind lawyers.
What happened to “My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing….” This ideal turns out to be a place in my heart — not in big town, big campus USA. Have a stroke? They get rid of you for poor sentence structure. Have a loss of hearing? They get rid of your for speaking too loud. I think I’d like to see Teddy Roosevelt in front of the podium — in a wheel chair — tonight.

Posted by: mce0004 | February 15, 2009, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm
The rating is weighted too heavily on the more modern presidents. Where is Andrew Jackson on the list, for instance? He was a transformational president, like Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, and possibly Reagan (I think we still need more than twenty years to make an objective judgment).

Note to Bill… Mr. Intelligent the democrats took over the Congress on 2006 – W. and the Republicans were the power idiots for 6 years.
My opinion as to the worst President, it has to be George W. Bush – if he had maintained the war in Afghanistan to find bin Laden, then perhaps history would have been kinder to him. Lies on top of lies is what history will remember about “W”.

He also never FORCED you to buy a house you couldn’t afford. We want protection from our own stupidity. The United States economy is supposed to be based on Capitalism which means the government should take a hands-off approach unless something is illegal. Was Abe really number 1? The guy was a religious fanatic, with a trophy money hungry wife. Abe moved to the hand of god. Didn’t Dubby also dance the dance of death to this very same, unseen blood for profits hand of god?
Think about it: Slavery was legal in America. Slave owners paid money for slaves, as they did for all classes of property.
What if Lincoln, instead of blockading the South, and withholding (Dubby did the asset freezing shtick – same difference) their assets in an attempt to force slave owners to relinquish their considerable investment in slaves, or, alternatively (hopefully?) react with extreme prejudice, without any expectation of fair compensation, had, instead, simply offered to buy the slaves from their owners?
There would never have been a civil war.
There would never have been millions of dead.
The lingering racism that still plagues America would never have been. The millions upon millions in blood and life the civil war cost America would never have been.
What would any of us do if the government told us we no longer owned what was ours? We’d get pretty PO’d, right?
The law is the law. And in Lincoln’s time, Slavery was legal. Period.
But the war industrialists – the blood money exchanges – the fee for blood merchants – would never have profited had old honest hard praying Abe done the right thing – the lawful thing – and avoided war.
The civil war made a lot of mass murderers rich. Lincoln was not el numero uno – he was just another vanity addict in the pockets of the Genocide Industries that pushed for the war. He was an accomplice to mass murder.
Why are we taught that presidents who kill are heroes? Is Charlie Manson a hero? Is Len Trotsky a hero (well – maybe – at least in one community)?
Think People – War is Mass Murder. Abe was no saint – he was a murderer!

Bush worst amen chorus is tiring…and says more about the historical myopia of the commenter than about Bush.
What most surprises me is Clinton’s move up. Survey puts him above mid-pack for such things as relations with Congress. WHAT?!! He was one of only 2 impeached presidents (the other was Andrew Johnson, who fully deserves his bottom fisher rating, since he tried to undo the Civil war). That takes an act of Congress.
He also doesn’t deserve having economic management above Reagan, since the economy during his term was a result of Reagan’s policies.
Just shows the leftist bent of most historians.
Aside, nice to see Calvin Coolidge and US Grant getting some respect. Harding should be next. As with Coolidge, he should be recognized for sound economic policies that led to the roaring 20s and not just pilloried (as Grant used to be) for the corruption of his administration.

Clinton did something even worse than getting himself impeached for lying. Clinton made oral sex not “sex” and opened the floodgates for children to talk about and experiment with this new kind of non-sex.
Clinton brought depravity, perversion and an utter lack of shame to the country and our children. There would not be celebutants like Paris Hilton or Tila Tequila without Clinton.

Bush may be in the worst ten but Clinton is def up there with him. The last several presidents have raped this country of everything by selling off land, bridges, purging jobs, wars etc. Having said that Wilson signed the federal reserve act and FDR knew about the stock market crash confiscated peoples gold, imprisoned thousands of anti war protesters, knew pearl harbor was going to get attacked, so he seems pretty bad to me…then again Bush let the Mossad attack us on 9/11.. so take your pick.

Obama worst, Carter second worst, Clinton third worst, Hoover forth worst of past 100 years. Nixon was a great president until he decided to break the law. LBJ was most dishonest though. Bush will be ranked better and better as the years go by, just like Truman.

Sorry, when it comes to being president, you can expect the media to scrutinize you and Mr. Clinton you were no exception. Your record gave reason for the media to scrutinize you. He was the absolute WORST president of the United States. George Bush was no saint and I must agree that he made his fair share of mistake, as any president would, but he was solid. He brought houour and integrity and respect back to the presidency, something Mr. Clinton threw out the door from day one.

Poor Warren Gamaliel Harding always makes these lists. This troubles me, for I have come to believe that Harding was a far better president than he has been judged. I will simply note that he faced multiple challenges in the post WWI years—greater than many presidents ever face—and for the most part, he handled them well. Unfortunately, he died just as the fruits of labor were coming to fruition. Calvin Coolidge would be the beneficiary. The supposedly horrible scandals of his administration were modest compared with those that came later. Harding himself, as is often forgotten, was in no way associated with them. I would urge that anyone interested in obtaining a scholarly look at the man read Robert K. Murray’s THE HARDING ERA.

He’s lucky they don’t have rankings for Major League baseball owners or male cheerleaders, because he would rank at the bottom of those lists also.

Bush bankrupted the US, as he did his first company. He spent 2 billion per day on a futile war, with a country that didn’t have wmd, or support al quaeda. The US borrows 90% just to pay its deficit, and cant even afford to pay the interest. It owes China 2.7 trillion dollars, and is currently 10 trillion in debt. Bush has been an economical disaster, and worse he allowed the offshoring of jobs to china, taking employment away from the US

Um…hello…again..NIXON?!! Anyone not care about all the cover ups and stuff he did and he basically got away with it cause Ford pardoned him? Come on, if that doesn’t make him at LEAST number 2 worst, I don’t know what does. Bush is immaculate next to him, imho.

Obama will be worst than Carter and Bush. He will not be re-elected after this stimulus bill fails.
If you think Bush ruined the country in the past 8 years, Obama will do it in less than two months. So scary.

This country never had a president, just figures for the global oligarchs and the British Empire. Everything is an illusion.
Why can’t the American populace see through all of this. Bush, Clinton all the same, they serve the same masters of the global military industrial banking media pharma corporate complex. You don’t ascend the presidency unless you are picked by these groups and their CFR Bilderburger enablers. This is the truth. Oh yes and don’t forget you kiss Israels butt. If Israel says go to war, you go to war.

I sure got a big laugh at the Clinton video. Everyone in his administration lied, and Clinton disgraced the office with his conduct. Clinton did not own up to the perjury he committed that resulted in losing his right to practice law. The poor Clintons. They just don’t get it.

I have to say Abe lincoln desrves the top slot.
Reagan needs to be dropped to #20′s, he was an old dude, who was clearly suffering from dementia and he left this country in such a bad state: hello deficits???
Clinton needs to be dropped a step lower for the way he disgraced the High Office,
Obama? may be he might be the worst or he might be one of the best, only time can time.
Oh GWB, hmmm, worst ever? i don’t think so, i would rate him a step below Clinton.
But Lincoln, will forever be number 1.
Highly overated is JFK, what exactly did he do? may be someone refreshen my memory

jimmy carter was and still is the worst president in US history. He left office with double-digit unemployment and inflation. He also left Americans to be tortured in a barabaric country for 444 days under the slogan of diplomacy.
jimmy carter also was a traitor to his own country. i wonder when he will go hang out with al queda? i know that hamas sure seems to like him.

It always amazes me how boldly Republicans lie about Democratic Presidents. No, Carter didn’t have “double-digit unemployment.” The only President since WWII to have that is Reagan. Carter’s unemployment record was substantially better than that of his predecessor, Gerry Ford — oh, but we don’t mention that, because he was a Repbulican, right?
Posted by: Alexk1952 | February 16, 2009, 9:21 am 9:21 am
Lincoln is debatable at Number 1. Had Lincoln followed his own beliefs that secession was a legal right of a state and removed federal troops from Fort Sumter as he was repeatedly requested to do there may have never actually been a war. It bothers me that over time our education system has portrayed the War of Northern Aggression as a “Free the Slaves” war which it was not. at least not in the first three years. It was about states rights. Lincoln freed the slaves in the north with Emancipation Proclamation mainly to rally the Federal Troops and give them a greater purpose to fight for. I think Our Greatest President would be FDR who led our country out of the Great Depression partially with the aid of the onset of WWII. But FDR Accomplished more than any other president. Including Lincoln, Had Lincoln lived and carried out his ideals for reconcilliation of the Country he may had been hands down the greatest. The Radical Republicans who strong armed the country following his assassination damage his image in the eyes of many southerners.

You’re correct. Acutally it was the interest rates that hit 21%, and unemployment of 7.5% under carter. regardless, he is still a traitor and the worst president ever.
Also, your comment about Reagan having double- digit unemployment is false. I won’t say you are lying, as you were so quick to call me (gotta love those open-minded liberals).

Ah, my friends, it will be the acolytes of Clio who will determine George W. Bush’s fate and that determination is many years off, after we are dust. In the meantime, the former President and his associates must make their case for history and document it thoroughly. How is is to be viewed will, it seems to me, be determined by what is yet to follow.

Alright Buchanan has to be the worst to be presiding at the time when the US goes to a civil war. Kinda sucks for Harrison that he gets so low just for dying a month into office. But Nixon has gotta be there at the bottom of the list, he resigned from office! And Bush’s place will probably only get lower the longer his costly and unecessary war in Iraq and this economic crisis drags on. Oh and if the Taliban ends up coming to power in Pakistan with nukes because of his abandonment of the Afghan war that will really do it.

Barry O (jimmy carter’s twin) will probably go down as the worst president in US history. He has rushed through an enormous “stimulus” package, which is really just a far-left payback for electing the socialist from chicago. Will someone please tell me how $$$ for global warming research and ACORN will stimulate our economy?
Barry is surrounded by people equally as shady as himself, and the media can only protect his administration for so long. Do I sense another democrat being impeached?

I wish I could figure out the historians rating chart? Dubya is the first president in American history to enter the White House by stopping legal votes from being counted. The hell with democracy – - and his 8 years of incompetence has destroyed more lives than any other president in American History.

“Dubya is the first president in American history to enter the White House by stopping legal votes from being counted”.
Where do you far-left loons come up with this stuff? Do you realize that they did several recounts, and the messiah of global warming still lost!
Do you really want to talk about election fraud? How about BO’s client in the early 90′s- ACORN. Those people have corrupted more elections in the history of our country than anybody else.
Just because the mainstream whackjob media ignored barry’s ties to that far-left group doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.

I’m not sure how accurately we’ll be able to judge G.W. Bush until his presidential archives are released, and we’re able to see what actually went on behind the scenes. Unfortunately, G.W. Bush and Cheney pushed legislation that restricts this from happening until they, and most of us are long dead, which I’m sure was done solely in the interest of national security, and not just to ensure that Americans don’t show up at their doorsteps with torches and pitchforks…
Posted by: wolf | February 16, 2009, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm
I’d agree with a lot of other people that George W. was the worst. He filled his administration with yes men, gave way too much power and influence to his vice-prez and the oil companies, made many appointments to vastly unqualified people, tried to bypass the Constitution, made decisions that defied logic and popular knowledge and spent our tax dollars so wildly he raised our national debt around 4.3 trillion dollars. And that’s not even counting waging war on Iraq by mistake.
It is a crying shame he was our president.

W= won the Iraq war which = (4,243 US casualties and 30,928 wounded soldiers and still no end in sight)
W= wrecked Al Qaeda = (Al Qaeda flourishing in more countries than ever – Iraq didn’t have Al Qaeda until we invaded)
W= wonderful husband and father (really?)
W= worked hard to restore dignity to the Oval Office – (by wearing long sleeve shirts and a jacket — according to his former chief of staff Andrew Card)
Thank you George Bush for keeping us safe? these past years!

The article didn’t exactly go into any details as to why the ratings appeared that way. FDR, Lincoln, Washington, Truman, JKF. The beat Presidents (not in order). Nixon, Bush jr, Buchanan, some of the worst. Carter had morals and was ruined by that. Clinton was a man of the people, but he lost his path. Reagan was given many opportunities to succeed, but only managed to pass 2 tests of office. Bush Sr got out of office before he could ruin civil rights with his religious idealoge. Obama is trying to get both sides together, but he may find that a pipe dream so he may have to get tough and will be criticized for appearing to be too dictatorial.

George Bush’s biggest failure was that he didn’t do enough in fighting the socialist democrats in Washington. Those idiots (frank, reid, schumer, dodd, pelosi, waters) caused the crisis and history will blame Bush.
Liberals write history, which is why JFK is regarded as a great president by many. He is credited with “getting America through the Cuban missile Crisis”, but no one seems to remember that he was the one who got us INTO that mess in the first place. He also took America to Vietnam where 58,000 soldiers were killed.
God only knows what the socialist liberals will write about BO. The man is nothing more then jeremiah wright and jimmy carter mixed together, but history will show that he walked on water.
Posted by: Grateful Citizen | February 16, 2009, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm
So True that Liberals write history even in the case of Lincoln, JFK, etc… Lincolns republican party of the 1850′s and 1860′s was more comparable to the Democrats of today. Hence the Radical republicans I mentioned earlier. Buchanan may be blames in some view but he avoided an earlier breakout of war by providing some defense against the radicals ideals. Lincoln and JFK are two that are held so highly I feel as much in remembrance of brutal assassinations as they are for what they really accomplished. As far as the worst in history That’s hard to choose among so many “do-nothings” that have held the office. but Surely Bill Clinton is not one of those solely on his white house affair if that is his biggest flaw then why isn’t JFK in the same predicament.
Posted by: Jason | February 16, 2009, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm
Jason
How could you possibly say that JFK is comparable to JFK? Lincoln kept the democrats from seceding so that they couldn’t continue their precious slavery. He also freed the slaves once he won the Civil War. What did JFK do again?
JFK was lukewarm on his civil rights advocacy up until his campaign. He also caused the Cuban Missile crisis by double crossing Cuban rebels at the bay of pigs. After that, he weakened America by removing our missiles from Turkey, which is why he is credited for “getting America through the cuban missile crisis”.
After that political disaster, he decided he would get tough on communism. He marched into Vietnam, which ultimately resulted in 58,000 Americans dead, and accomplished NOTHING.
Liberals of that time were the same traitors they are today. They forced America’s early withdrawal, which led to the SLAUGHTER OF MILLIONS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE AT THE HANDS OF THE NORTH. Thank you Jane Fonda and the rest of the hippy idiots.
As to why JFK is not in the same boat as slick willie (the prez who was accused of rape by juanita brodderick, slept with paula jones/lewinsky ect), it’s because liberal media refused to touch JFK’s infidelity back then. Now, there some conservative news outlets- thank GOD!

Funny how people lack the basic knowledge of American history. Example, it was Eisenhower (repub) who first put troops in Vietnam – right after the French lost in Dien Bien Phu in 1954. JFK was not POTUS then. JFK gets credit for giving the nation hope and a cause, remember he started the challenge of putting a man on the moon? And don’t forget it was a German from WWII who did the work (Warner Von Braun). Yes Lincoln was the best, he held this country together. Cost lots of lives in doing so. Washington as the first POTUS, give it to him. The remaining 3 on the list are Democrats. And yes, there were attacks on the American mainland during WWII, U-boats sinking ships right off the Jersey and Texas coasts, Oregon was bombed, German agents and their bombings. So bush is not the first POTUS to deal with attacks on American mainland. Get a grip folks and admit that this country has had it best times, economically, fiscally and socially, under Democratic administrations. And don’t put religion into this, we are a secular country. You want a religious country then go to Iran.

My first presidential memories are of Kennedy’s funeral, then of President Johnson becoming President and drafting young men to go to Vietnam. I was a little kid, but I was horrified by the war in Vietnam. I remember Nixon, whom I hated because he kept us in Vietnam, and the Watergate hearings. I was shocked to think people at that level of government would actually break the law. The Nixon years turned me into a Democrat, but not before I voted for Ford, in my first election, because he reminded me of my Dad, I was only 18. I didn’t cotten to Jimmy Carter, at first, but he grew on me as I saw in him a moral and principled leader. He warned us we needed to conserve energy, and pursue peace in the Middle east, but Americans preferred Ronald Reagan because he was an optimist, and an old school, John Wayne type politician. I disliked Reagan because I disagreed with his policies, but I didn’t hate him. I didn’t support Bill Clinton in the primary but I did vote for him for President. By his second term I knew he was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Then the Bush years came, and I honestly debated moving to Canada, (I already live in Maine, pretty close.) Bush moved the country so far to the right I questioned whether I wanted to stay here. But then, miracle of miracles, we got Obama.
I think Obama combines the moral principle of Jimmy Carter with Bill Clinton’s political savvy. I feel good about my country again, because even if we are in a recession, we are once again a moral country.

I think the verdict is still out on Richard Nixon. He did a lot of good things. While the Watergate coverup was unfortunate, we now know that other presidents have done the same kind of things.
I believe that he was one of the most intelligent presidents we ever had, and he was very good at, by God, getting things done.
He got us out of Vietnam. When The Soviet Union was considering moving in troops to the Middle East during 1973′s Yom Kippur war, Nixon put American armed forces on worldwide nuclear alert and Leonid Brezhnev backed down.
Nixon’s playing the China Card against the USSR was a master stroke of power politics and lead directly to Detente with Russia.
He actually did much for civil rights, for African Americans, while talking middle-of-the-road.
And I liked the man.
So overall while the jury is still out, I give him high marks in foreign and domestic policy.
