Schock to the President’s Argument

Just yesterday, President Obama went to the Caterpillar plant in East Peoria, Illinois and the urged Caterpillar employees to lobby their congressman, Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill to support the stimulus package.

Singling Schock out in front of his constituents, the President asked the 27-year-old legislator to stand up.

“Aaron’s still trying to make up his mind about our recover package,” Obama said to the employees in the crowd. “And so we know that all of you are going to talk to him after our event, because he’s a very talented young man.  I’ve got great confidence in him to do the right thing for the people of Peoria.”

Today Rep. Schock said on the House floor that "I found it very interesting that after the president finished his speech and I stayed around, not one employee at that facility approached me and asked me to vote for this bill."

In fact, said Schock, “I have received over 1,400 phone calls, e-mails and letters from employees alone asking me to oppose this legislation."

Why!? Because, Schock said, "They know that this bill is not stimulus. They know that this bill will not do anything to create long-term, sustained economic growth. This bill is too big to get it wrong.”

The congressman said that the bill is concerning because it is very light on infrastructure spending.

Schock quoted Obama’s favorite hometown President, Abraham Lincoln, “I’m reminded of his quote, ‘what kills a skunk is the publicity it brings itself’ – perhaps that is the haste by which this bill is being brought forward. I urge a ‘No’ vote.”

Asked by ABC News about Schock’s comments and the lack of constituents apparently lobbying him, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs at today’s briefing said "if the congressman goes back and evaluates the plan, lobbying or not, I think he’ll see that it saves or creates millions of jobs, puts people back to work,…would put money directly into employees at Caterpillar’s pockets, as well as people throughout his district."

Gibbs added, "I think, if the congressman goes and looks at the bill through an economic lens, not just one — not just through a political one, I think he’ll see benefits not just for his district and his state, but for the entire country."

Schock is a first term Congressman, just recently replacing Republican Congressman Ray LaHood who left his seat to become the President’s Transportation Secretary.  LaHood had replaced former House Minority Leader Bob Michel, R-Ill., for whom he had served as chief of staff.

The president yesterday described both LaHood and Michel as "Republicans I love." No word on his feelings towards Schock.

– Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller

UPDATE: Responding to Gibbs, Dave Natonski, Communications Director for Congressman Schock tells ABC News that "Congressman Schock was looking through an economic lens when he voted against the stimulus package, as it doesn’t take an economic expert to realize this so-called stimulus package was nothing more than wasteful, pork-barreled spending that would stimulate the government, not the economy."

I thought the President was rude to Schock. He was also rude to Judd Gregg. This president acts more like a petulant teenager who is used to getting his way, than a leader.
Is it too early to say: “Toldya”.

OMG.
Reading this article is hilarious. Thank you so much for writing this, Jake.
Jake – could you please, at the next press conference, ask Gibb is Congress has exempted themselves from putting their medical records online as required under the stimulus bill?

“Is it too early to say: ‘Toldya’.”
Nooo … in fact, it’s a good time for a few echoing choruses of “Who’s Sorry Now”, followed by demands to the hijacked “Democrats” in the Congress to impeach Him, or lose their seats.

Gibbs:”I think, if the congressman goes and looks at the bill through an economic lens, not just one — not just through a political one, I think he’ll see benefits not just for his district and his state, but for the entire country.”

Gibbs characterizes Schock’s concerns as “political”. It is once again a way to disparage those who disagree with the administration while trying to claim bipartisanship.
Are the Caterpillar employees and Peoria residents who are urging Schock to vote against the bill also looking through a political lens?

THE ONE QUESTION NOBODY WILL ASK OBAMA (its not too late) will unravel the biggest scandal in US HIstory. Obama is spending millions in court cases all over America to quash requests to see his birth certificate or school records. Why would he do that? Because there is ample proof that he was not born in the US and was never eligible. If found out later EVERYTHING he and his appointees do will have to be undone:
The simple Question the media will not demand an answer to:
“Barack Obama why do you refuse to release your birth certificate and are spending millions to prevent others from seeing it?”
We have a right to know!

Didn’t Obama promise he wouldn’t sign any legislation with pork? I know he did. This bill is loaded with it.
He also said he wouldn’t sign any legislation that had not been on the WH web site for 5 days. He broke that promise his first week when he signed the Lily Ledbetter legislation and intends to do it again with this legislation.

Republicans are against any investments in our country.
They only believe in tax cuts for themselves and as a reward for the wealthy folks who raise so much money to get them into power.
The only way they will consider voting for a bill is if it contains only tax cuts, as that is the only thing they believe in.
They do not want anything wasted on our country. They only believed in pork filled bills when they were writing them.

Here’s your TOP TEN STATES getting MORE MONEY FROM the federal government than they put in – for every $1 they put in, this is what they got back:
1. New Mexico $2.03
2. Mississippi $2.02
3. Alaska $1.84
4.Louisiana $1.78
5. West Virginia $1.76
6. North Dakota $1.68
7. Alabama $1.66
8. South Dakota $1.53
9. Kentucky $1.51
10. Virginia $1.51
So these “conservative” states are getting fat at the public trough, all while whining about “pork”. (Yes Mitch McConnell, I’m looking at you.)

You like paying more taxes? Prepare yourself. You will be!!! BIG TIME!!!
Someone has to pay this back, and that someone is the rest of us. How is offering states more money, the more they get on welfare? That’s enslavement, not investment.
I find it reprehensible to offer a dibble of $13 dollars a week to people, and act like that’s truly helping, then turn around and institute socialist policies in the guise of stimulus.
For us to take this money, will insure that our children, grandchildren, and beyond, will pay for it. That isn’t what I call investing in our country.
Obama lied about the pork. Obama lied about the CEO of caterpillar. Obama lied about Gregg. Obama lied about transparency. So why believe him on this? This is all a part of his agenda to drag us down into socialism.

Americans have to say what they want, a stimulus or not, if more than half million people have lost their jobs in a quarter and more is coming, I do not know what any responsible government will do but to get a stimulus pakage through and get back people at work. Remember that the republican failed policies have brought this country on its knees. Eight years of WBush have put America in economic recessionand budgetary deficit because of his illogic tax cuts while overspending on two wars, result: the poor is poorer and the middle class is killed. I think it is important that are Senators and Representatives vote “Yes” on the single largest spending bill in US history without reading the thousands of pages. It is important to vote on things without reading them because, after all, the lobbyists who likely wrote the bill are trustworthy. When will our legislators learn that they don’t need to read, understand, or analyze anything!? Just vote!

Tapper: I think there’s a potential story here. Schock says that he received more than 1400 calls, e-mails and letters asking him to oppose the legislation. But, he didn’t reveal the actual number of individuals who contacted him, and asked him to vote against the bill; some (many/most?) of those calls, e-mails and letters could have come from a smaller number of individuals who repeatedly contacted Schock and ran up the tally.
Also, you should find out how many people contacted Schock and asked him to support the legislation. Considering that Caterpillar laid off 758 workers in Peoria recently, and has laid off more in the past, and has more layoffs slated for the future, it would be interesting to find out how many laid-off employees contacted him, and asked him to support the legislation.
Additionally, you should find out how many employees asked him to SUPPORT the legislation. Schock does not reveal this number. I have a hard time believing that Caterpillar’s unionized work force would want him to oppose any bill that would potentially keep them in a job or create new jobs to allow some of their friends and family to return to work.
If you do find out that they did indeed want Schock to vote against the bill, that would be a HUGE a story, because it would be the first instance of a specific manufacturing sector/employee union workers (Caterpillar’s workers are UAW) to come out against the bill.
Mr. Tapper, please look deeper into this. I think there’s a big story here.
(p.s. Time has done a recent article on how devastating the Caterpillar job losses are to Peoria. I think there’s something here. Either Schock’s not being truthful, or you have a set of union worker’s opposing this plan. Either way, you have a newsworthy story.)

You slam the Republicans for hypocrisy, maybe justly so. But have you considered that they thought they were doing the right thing at the time and have seen that the 1st package has had little to no effect. That the 1st package was, if I am correct, primarily to help failing banks and financial institutions (go ahead and make your argument about them bailing out their buddies) and was not loaded down with little pet projects that the Dems haven’t been able to push through until now. Maybe they’ve actually had time to sit back and see how much damage the current bill will do to America. Maybe they believe the economists, not just patronizing polititians. Maybe they’re trying to be competent leaders and do the right thing, whether you agree with them or not. Maybe I’m too optimistic.

You Americans have a weird take on democracy.
The fact that no one approached the senator is to do with the very fear that is going around ‘they don’t want to be out of a job’
I have visited various states in the US and what I have found facinating is that people from my shore have managed to create a system of ‘separation’ it took a while for me to notice a black face in some parts of the state.
I think your president is what i will call a “futurist” – he is making a good attempt at breaking down a prejudice that might lead to your country being ostracized.

You may be blind to it, but it seems that the preponderance of your leftist commentary is name-calling or bald assertions of malfeasance on the part of their opponents.
This is a classic psychological maechanism: the demonization of the “other”.
It largely misses the point of the policy discussion and is of no value to the advancement of the Republic’s interests.
The question at hand is will the proposed stimulous maximize economic activity or not.
Past economic history indicates that tax cuts by the Kennedy, Reagan and Bush administrations preceded economic booms.
If there is a case study proving that increased government employment, increased social welfare spending and increased governmental economic control maximizes economic activity, I’d appreciate knowing about it.
Where and when- not theory, not assertion, not projections, but instead verifiable historical record.

Obama was using thug type intimidation against Shock, wanting the more radical union members to confront Schock and physically attack him. This is inner city street thugery on Obama’s part. Obama deliberately set Schock out in front of a potential mob hoping for a confrontation. Obama is a slick sophisticated street gang leader (i.e. ACORN).

I just wonder how many of these pro obama posts are written by ACORN people who just got a hefty pay raise through the this porkulus bill.

Oh these funny Republicans! The same folks who declare THAT NO ONE has read the bill are POSITIVE that the bill – which no one has read, is ALL pork – and – of course – will not work. Why? because – or so goes the lying Right Wing, FDR was ONLY able to reduce unemployment from 1933-37 from 25 to 15% But even if FDR was a failure – only idiots would compare our economy in 1933 to now…

Obama’s pac cronies felt it was necessary to fund robo calls to get people like myself to call my republican congressman to vote for this piece of dog do.
Even democrats who voted for this said they were hoping and praying and crossing their fingers that this would work. That is because they know it is full of wastefull pork.
For the ingnorant good stimulus is that that leverages every dollar spent. For instance if I gave you $5,000 to buy a latte stand I might expect you to generate $30,000 in revenue from your efforts, which you could spend on food and clothing. If I give your friend $5,000 who is unemployed, and he stays home and watches tv, he spends 5,000 on food and clothing. Obviously the $5,000 I gave you has stimulated the economy much more effectively than the $5,000 I gave your friend, and you are much better off.

Thank heavens for a congressman who is bright and honest. Wish him well soon, because he can’t last long in the evil environment which is the new Washington, DC. The only way DC politics could get worse was to add Chicago thug politics to it, and lo, now it is worse.

To valh1,
Name one economist (that isn’t part of the administration) that thinks this pig of a bill will stimulate the economy. Ed Yardeni, Brian Riedl, William Galston, Chris Varvares, Martin Feldstein, all believe this bill does little or nothing to stimulate anything but Obama’s ego. If you like I could give more names. Why don’t you try giving one.

“But even if FDR was a failure – only idiots would compare our economy in 1933 to now…”
- Fred
Hey Fred -
Obama himself compared this economy to the depression-era ecomony. So have myriad other Democrats in arguing for the legislation.

Schock and the GOP are on the wrong side of history and morality on this one and I’m sure his constituents won’t forget it when his seat is up again.

If the Congressman had heard from his district, he would have voted for the bill. That he voted against would say he did not get overwhelming feedback to back the bill. Obama calling him out was not very classy. Obama didn’t need him to get his big, unprecedented, spending bill passed.

In fact, said Schock, “I have received over 1,400 phone calls, e-mails and letters from employees alone asking me to oppose this legislation.”
Excellent journalism! Any chance the 3rd estate will verify this claim? Laughable on its face.

The first bail out passed with not much republican support and it took two tries to get it through. It is funny how the left has trouble with history even when it is only a couple of months ago. Go back and check it out buddy because it took two tries to pass and they too at the time cried the sky was falling and if we did not act the end of days was upon us.

Republicans still don’t get it.
This is NO time for political grandstanding
Why did the first stimulus pass with GOP support. It was a heck of a lot worse than this bill… no oversight, no accountability, no details….
clear to see the GOP is caught with their hands in the Hypocrisy Cookie Jar. Sen. Gregg is on the way with the milk to wash down the Hypocrite flavored cookies the republicans are now eating.

Schock also had a fundraiser with Pres Bush last year. He had a much different attitude towards Bush’s talks and decisions. He agreed with him….. I also find it ironic that he expects the workers to come to him, What congressman sits in the shadows waiting for people to approach them. He should have gone and talked with them, he’s the one that those workers may have elected… Way to show gratitude… Maybe if we sit back and approach no one things will CHANGE…

Placebos. The real questions is why do politicians want to solve the problem by increasing the problem? Too much spending and too much credit are the problem (and not enough income), so the Administration wants both to increase. When government spends, incomes decrease.
The real problem is leadership across the board in government. Instead of solutions we get placebos. The more government we have, the bigger the failure becomes.

First off, the first stimulus (TARP) plan was a loan. It is expected to be paid back. Some of it may not if some of the banks and financial institutions do end up failing but you can expect some return on this LOAN to the financial industry.
That is a wholly differnet package than the stimulus just voted through. It is a GRANT for those who have access to the SYSTEM. And guess what people, that isn’t you.
All we have done with this stimulus bill is raise the cliff upon which America will fall off. Remember that Medicaid and Social Security go bankrupt in 2030. (Do any of you rememeber that arguement a few years ago?) That was before this economic disaster. The fallout and subsequent pork barrel spending on top of a depressed economy will only help accelerate when those plans will go bankrupt. We are completely upside down on our debt/deficit to income ratio.
No one has told anyone how we are going to pay for this thing. No one. $787 Billion dollars is supposed to get magically paid back during a depressed economy. Use some common sense people. It isn’t that hard. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE MONEY. THAT’S WHAT GOT US HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. COMPLAING ABOUT THE PAST DOES NOT FIX THE FUTURE.
At some point the US will have to deleverage. We have to be grown men and women about this and face up to reality. Not complain about the past.
Why did we expand government? Why didn’t we cut government spending? Do we really need the National Endowment for the Arts? How about millions in Honey Bee research? The government just keeps adding more and more programs, requiring more and more money. When can we get rid of this crap? Please someone tell me of a government program that has been ELIMINATED since it was formed?
Thanks for your time. I have so much more.

What could Obama do to stimulate the economy? He could end the $10 billion a month Iraq War instead of just shifting it over to Afghanistan.
Ron Paul has stated Rohm Emmanuel is talking about instituting a draft as one way to get troops into Afghanistan and lower the unemployment rate. Isn’t that nice.
Obama could cut government agencies like the Department of Education signed into law by Jimmy Carter in 1979, and education has been going down hill ever since. It costs $56 billion per year.
I’m sure the money would be better spent, if it was just left in the states in the first place.
Has anyone ever seen pictures of the Zimbabwe currency after they printed too much and collapsed the value? you will see why that’s going to happen to us.

I am so happy that this Congressman did not by the bridge that Obama is trying to sell. And using the worse tactics. Obama and his ilk think that the American people are sheep but he is finding out we are not. Soon, he is going to do something really stupid and illegal like perhaps someone will slip about his eligibility which 98% of Americans know he was not eligible to run to begin with.
I’m hoping that his impeachment proceedings will be televised. I personally changed parties on Nov. 4th from Democrat to Independent. I didn’t want a one-state Congress but seeing that the Democratic Party was really a Marxist Party caused me to make that change.
Obama represents the things that is wrong with the US. His wanting to speak with our enemies, his 6+ executive orders that are proving he’s abusing the system, the fire in the White House that he never explained (He was burning more than papers in the fireplace which caused a huge “bonfire” which burned the over 200 year old mantel), and his choices for positions — who do not believe in paying taxes but we have to, and a Secretary of State who should not be due to the conflict of intertest. She and her husband both still collect financial donations from the Arabs and as a Government Employee one is not suppose to accept anything over $20.
McCain was not a good candidate at all — but I wasn’t asked who should. To be truthful, I did like Romney as he, being a businessman knows what it is like to lose a business and start from scratch. That is what we need. Make outsourcing illegal, bring back the financial regulations we once had that the Clinton administration threw out, make Wall Street accountable and not reward those who were responsible for our nationwide Depression.
But that’s my opinion.
