Something To Keep In Mind About Daschle
One third of the Senate took office after former Sen. Tom Daschle, D-SD, was defeated for re-election in 2004. While that doesn’t mean that a third of the Senate was automatically opposed to him — far from it — it does mean many of them didn’t know him, didn’t feel any allegiance to him, didn’t owe him anything.

It would be nice if Howard Dean could replace him or either Sanjay Gupta. But then that makes too much sense, I’m afraid.

That is an interesting point.
Could be why no one felt the need to vouch for him.

Plus, I recall him as being a pretty partisan fellow, so there’s probably not a lot of love lost between him and the remaining Republicans.
You really led the charge on this one, Jake. I’ll be looking for somebody a little more domesticated to take your seat next to Helen Thomas at the next WH press conference ’cause you’ll probably be standing somewhere in the back of the room. :)

“It would be nice if Howard Dean could replace him”
Dean DESERVES it — without Dean, The Puppet would never have made it to the nomination and the presidency that came with it this year — and, having recent experience as a non-celebrity medical doctor, knows what’s ACTUALLY needed for poor — the word Obama won’t use, although millions and millions of those who voted for Him ARE, exactly, “poor” — and working people, and for those now thinking themselves “middle class” who soon WILL be poor.
If Dean isn’t made head of HHS, un-rich Americans might as well forget about the “Obama” administration … it’s all full of people who can’t bother to help their suspiciously-numerous house servants, or — in the case of Ms. What’s her name — even to pay their taxes, so they can get Social Security if they live long enough.
Dean, on the other hand, actually IS an uber-WASP who’s like Roosevelt. The people LOVE Dean … maybe that’s the problem for Obama.

So we’re supposed to feel good about our president who caved to the health care and Big Financial; Lobbies, decided to take a chance on two borderline tax cheats, and still proclaims his ethical purity? All while co-opting the majority progressive movement in this country? Nice departure from Bush, sure…
Posted by: ssa | February 3, 2009, 7:37 pm 7:37 pm
This whole thing shouldn’t be about loyalty or owing anyone anything. A tax cheat is a tax cheat….you can defend him as a person if you want, but in the public eye, he is a tax cheat who only paid because he got busted. This two sets of rules thing is getting ridiculous….

Confucius once said that if you make a mistake and refuse to correct it, you are making another mistake. But a wiser man once wrote that if you make a mistake, preach other not to make that mistake, but then make the same mistake again. That is hypocrisy. That is Mr. Obama.

Daschle the DINO was the second biggest shill for the insurance companies in the Senate, after Frist. He was a terrible pick, and the left, at least, is not sad to see him go.

Something else to know about Obama.
His favorite book is “The Idiots Guide to be a President”

Blue Fairy: “Dean, on the other hand, actually IS an uber-WASP who’s like Roosevelt. The people LOVE Dean … maybe that’s the problem for Obama.”
Actually, I’d offer that the problem in this instance is WH Chief of Staff, not President Obama, although the buck clearly does stop with him. Emanuel’s problems with Howard Dean are rooted in the fallout from the latter’s success in deploying his “50-state strategy” at DNC.
Regardless, there are other equally plausible candidates for HHS Secretary who would be just as effective, such as Dr. Jack Lewin, a physician who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the American College of Cardiology in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Lewin served for 11 years as President / CEO of the California Medical Asociation (1995-2006), and prior to that he was the Director of the Hawaii Department of Health (1986-1994). He has been at the forefront of the health care reform movement for three-plus decades, and a deputy director of Hawaii DOH (1978-86) was instrumental in that state’s adoption of universal health care coverage in the late ’70s and early ’80s, which has since served as the model for all other recent reform efforts undertaken by various states.
Additionally, Dr. Lewin was also the founder of the Navajo Nation Department of Health, which serves America’s largest Indian tribe across eastern Arizona, western New Mexico and southern Utah, and he served as its first director.
I’ve known Dr. Lewin personally for many years. He knows his way around the political world, and has extensive management experience in both the public and private sectors. Further, as a licensed physician who practiced in economically-challenged communities in the Southwest and Hawaii, he’s firmly committed to the effective reform of health care delivery in the United States.
Howard Dean was and still is my first choice for the HHS post, but if the aforementioned personality issues prove irreconcilable, I’d really urge people to take a closer look at Jack Lewin. If we are truly serious about undetaking reform of health care in this country, he could well be the meeting of man and moment. I believe that Dr. Lewin would be a great Secretary of Health and Human Services, if ever given the opportunity.
Aloha.
P.S.: And Blue Fairy, please stop calling President Obama “the Puppet.” It’s inherently disrespectful of both the man and all of us who voted for him in November, and makes you look emotionally diminutive and petulant.

Denmark, 68% income tax to pay for government health care and a two year wait for healthcare.
Thats not counting the 35% sales tax
Democrats Obama PUNKED you.

I used to support President Obama, but ridiculous, Tom Daschle has plenty of friends in Congress. Do you think Democrats would harp the “people like me should pay a little more” nonsense if they did, in fact, have to pay a little more? I think not!

Obama said “We were just tired of being in the White House,”
It appears he was also tired of being a senator since he never did anything since elected except look for another job

Sen Harkin for HHS Secretary. Rumor has it he is already meeting with Obama’s people. Without question he the person best suited to massage the health care reform bill through Congress.

DrWonderful … Sen Harkin for HHS Secretary.
If Obama picked him with his crappy JUDGEMENT he probably is wanted by the FBI, IRS or some other law enforcement agency.

the IRS should AUDIT every Democrat and pay particular attention to any Democrat that Obama nominates.

But the reason Mr. Obama said he was taking time away from the White House on Tuesday was to raise support for his economic stimulus package.
“We’re very proud of what’s been accomplished at this school and we want to make sure that we’re duplicating that success all across the country,” he said. “So nothing is going to be more important than this. And the recovery and reinvestment act that we’ve put forward will provide billions of dollars to build schools and help with school construction.”

The stimuus package could be paid for simply by collecting the taxes Democrats haven’t paid.

People did vouch for him, (such as Sen. Rockefeller), it just didn’t get much reporting. God forbid someone ever make a mistake. Why would anyone want to go into public services? He could have cashed out years ago and made a ton of money. But he stayed & wanted to come back. The country is worse off for all of this. Can’t wait to hear how all the trolls on this blog defend the next Republican scandal.

Jake, do you think IRS needs to audit all senators and congressman reported tax? I am sure IRS will collect a lot of money. It seems to me that IRS just runs after hard working people that make $ 20,000/yr.

“He could have cashed out years ago and made a ton of money.”
I’ve got news for you, CJ. He did cash out years ago and make a ton of money. But there’s only so much mileage a guy can get out of being a former Senator, so he was coming back to polish up his credentials so he could cash out again and make another ton of money.

Something to keep in mind. Most people did not vote for Obama because they were in love with him like the media. They voted for him because of Bush.
Posted by: Jean | February 3, 2009, 11:26 pm 11:26 pm
It does kind of feed the storyline that Obam wanted a clean Bill but Pelosi/Frank larded it up with a 40 year wish list.
Here is the rest of Cooper’s quote:
“”They know its a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill. Now, I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don’t care what’s in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous. They don’t mind the partisan fighting cause that’s what they are used to. In fact, they’re really good at it. And they’re a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like. If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We’re just told how to vote. We’re treated like mushrooms most of the time.”"
Interesting that a Democrat has the same issue as the Republicans- they dont get to see the Bill until the last minute and arent given tie to figure out what things in it actually mean.

Within just 2 weeks of taking office, we’ve had the new “Hope” administration try to nominate at least 4 cabinet nominees with tax issues (ok, I’ll say it, tax cheats), one who actually made confirmation by the Bozo Congress (Hello, Congress – WAKE UP!), we’ve had the VP make fun of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for flubbing the oath of office to Mr. Obama while he himself flubbed the oath to the Secretary of State. Hypocrite? Joe Biden? Nah. To top it off, we have Mr. Obama saying that national health care, a major campaign issue, is now suffering because of the failure of the Congress to confirm a bona fide tax cheat(the Congress actually did something???!!!). Sir, if your merry band of whatever-their-smoking-decision-makers did their homework, we, the American people, specifically those of us who desperatley need that health care, would not have to suffer. Understand, sir, we want you to succeed. We want you to reform Washington (good luck with that). We want you to restore our nation. We are willing to make the necessary sacrifices, to walk with you. But, YOU have to show you want to walk with us. We don’t want rhetoric, we don’t want tax cheats, we want ACTION!!! Action, YOU promised. So far, since election day, we’re still walking alone; YOU are not walking with us. If I may date myself, I invoke the musical group, The Who: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Where is the YOU of the campaign trail? Where is the hope? Step up, Sir, or step aside.

George Bush waited until a month before his last day to admit he made mistakes.
Here’s a big one that caused over four thousand troops to be buried: Iraq!!!
You all want to chastise Obama for Daschle? Well guess what? Daschle didn’t admit to his mistake until after he was nominated and it was caught by the vetting team. He was audited by the IRS before that and even they didn’t see anything wrong.

The 645 page stimulus package was posted online over two weeks ago. The specifics and breakdown of the proposed funding have been clearly presented with a number of sources. It sounds like Cooper has a lazy streak when it comes to acquiring data for legislation, along with some kind of agenda up his sleeve. I hope his laziness, petulance, and obfuscation is remembered in a couple of years.

It was introduced on 1/26 (although HuffPo seemed to have it on 1/24) and voted on 1/28.
So four days.
If the funding is so specific then why is everything round numbers?

Bertie- I don’t think the House had to rely on the Huffington Post days before the vote for info — especially when the bill was posted by Jake around three weeks ago. Weeks ago you could also find specific information correlating parts of the bill to amounts. I’m not aware of giving bills appropriating funds commas and decimal points, especially with amounts in the billions and millions.
