Strong. But Average. And Way Divided.
There are a couple of data points worth keeping in mind as we await President Obama’s address to the nation tonight – and as we digest an aide's claim today, as Jake Tapper reports, that his strong approval rating is "earned." One, while his rating is high, it’s also dead average for a new president. The other is the impressive partisanship beneath it.
We have approval ratings for each of the last nine elected presidents after their first month in office, back to Dwight Eisenhower. (We’re leaving Johnson and Ford aside.) There’s been a healthy range, from a low of 55 percent for George W. Bush after the disputed election of 2000 to a high of 76 percent for his father 12 years earlier. (I’m using ABC/Post polls since Reagan, Gallup previously).
But the average? Sixty-seven percent. And Obama’s? Sixty-eight percent, as we reported in our new poll yesterday. His initial rating, then, is strong – but it’s also generally typical for a new guy.
An increasing factor, though, is partisanship. I’ve previously described a steadily rising correlation between political party allegiance and ideology over the past generation. It shows up in presidential approval, too. The gap between a president’s rating in his own party vs. the out party has been markedly wider for the last three officeholders compared with their six elected predecessors.
Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush were the last two presidents of the less-partisan era. Reagan started with 89 percent approval among Republicans, 71 percent among independents and 56 percent among Democrats. Bush’s first-month approval ratings from these groups were 90, 74 and 64 percent, respectively. Those are 18- and 33-point gaps for Reagan, 16- and 26-point gaps for Bush.
That changed with Bill Clinton: He started with 86 percent approval from Democrats, but just 59 percent from independents and 40 percent from Republicans – gaps of 27 and 46 points, respectively. Then George W. Bush – 86 percent in his party, but dropping to 54 percent among independents (-32 points) and 37 percent among Democrats, 49 points lower than in his political base.
And now there’s Obama, who’s made reaching across party lines a point of principle in his presidency, with little to show for it so far. After a month in the hot seat, 90 percent of Democrats approve of his work, dropping to 67 percent of independents and 37 percent of Republicans. The 53-point difference between Democrats and Republicans in assessing Obama is numerically the biggest in data back to Eisenhower, albeit within sampling tolerances of the gap for George W. Bush.
There are substantive reasons for these differences; Obama’s staked his economic program on a massive infusion of federal dollars, and Republicans are pretty much constitutionally skeptical of the government’s ability to spend money wisely or well, at least on social programs. They’re also especially concerned about the ballooning deficit.
This doesn’t mean there’s no potential upside in Obama’s at least trying to reach across the aisle. Two-thirds of Americans say they’d rather see politicians try to cooperate across party lines, even if that means compromising on important issues. (But likely not if it means compromising on core values, as the message massager John Russonello aptly points out.) And Obama, in our poll, gets credit for seeking compromise in a way the Republicans in Congress don’t. That’s likely helping him among independents, at least as compared with George W. Bush, as the table below shows.
Nonetheless, the bottom line is the same as I suggested shortly after Inauguration Day. Reaching for bipartisanship is all well and good. Actually achieving it, given the sharp and substantive divisions that undergird partisan sentiments, is another issue entirely.
Approval in February of 1st term ---In party:--- All Dem Rep Ind vs. out vs. ind.Obama 68% 90% 37% 67% 53 pts. 23 pts.Bush 55 37 86 54 49 32Clinton 63 86 40 59 46 27Bush 76 64 90 74 26 16Reagan 68 56 89 71 33 18Carter 71 79 58 69 21 10Nixon 60 52 76 57 24 19Kennedy 72 86 49 69 37 17Eisenhower 68 61 84 66 23 18ABC/Post polls since Reagan, Gallup previously

The public is souring on a party that tried to block:
1. The largest spending bill in world history
2. #1, with no provisions for hiring U.S. Citizens (i.e. no E-Verify)
3. Gives “average folks” (and I know that’s a dubious term) $8 more in their paychecks.
4. Fails to address the fundamentals behind the economic collapse.
Huh? How’s that Kool-Aid tasting?

I had decided I would try hard to be fair to the new president, even though I didn’t vote for him. Unfortunately, his first month was even worse than I imagined. His cabinet choices were pathetic. His idea fo bipartisanship is the Republicans giving in to his every whim. The stimulous package is mostly a compilation of social programs to bring us closer to socialism and pork barrel stuff. I want our country to be successful as a republic, democracy, and free market economy. There is no way I can support this president in anyway if I want those things. If he is successful, the country I know and love will be gone forever. It is not that I want him to fail, but that I want the country to succeed. I am convinced that his true ideas were never vetted by the adoring press. I think he is a man who resents the United States as it is and hopes to change it so that the non- achievers are given everything. What happens when the achievers give up and say, “You know what, why should I work and achieve? Then I am told I am the evil rich.” Who will be taxed when the rich are taxed at 100%? Who will give stuff to the people who have a thousand excuses why they are discriminated against, can’t work, etc?

Congress didn’t have time to read the “stimulus” before voting on it, and the public hasn’t yet, either.
Oh, boy, when they do…
Obama missed a great opportunity here. Many on the right were willing to entertain Keynesian spending as stimulus, in addition to tax cuts.
Instead, Obama signed into law 14 years of pent-up liberal frustration in an orgasm of spending that has little bang for the buck and a huge bill for our grandkids to pay.
Bush was a frying pan, Obama is a fire. Aren’t there any fools in DC willing to be responsible with my money?

I did not vote for President Obama, but had hoped that he would not be as partisan as he has been. I had hoped that he would actually have THIS country’s best interests in mind and thereby help the rest of the world. But my optimism has bee replaced by a deflated reality. He is JUST another politician. He is just another one who lies and manipulates. No matter how dire the circumstances he can not rise above it all to be a LEADER. He is afterall a fallible, corruptible human. The optimism will fade as reality hits and the poles will show it.

This article seems to fail to take into account the varying sizes of these groups. If the president has a 90% approval rating from Democrats, and 75% define themselves as Democrats, then it’s a much stronger approval rating than if, say, 5% define themselves as Democrats. This may just mean that there are so many people who now say they’re Democrats that those who remain in the GOP corner are more polarized, and therefore less likely to approve of Obama.

Ken:”How long will it take the Lib/Dems to realize that they are breaking many promises on accountability and transparency? ”
About as long as it will take Republicans to realize the level of accountability and transparency is unprecedented and is second only to Obama’s own rhetoric. When his second executive order is to order his Administration “The presumption of disclosure should be applied to all decisions involving FOIA” and EVERYONE agrees this is a major change from the prior administration, most of his supporters see him moving towards achieving his rhetoric.

All partisant arguments aside, a very valid point! Similarly, when people say ‘the most unemployed since 1945′ one has to adjust for how much larger the employment pool is than in 1945, which must really indicate how bad it was then!. When adjusting for these things we haven’t even hit 1980/81 levels yet and we are already 1 trillion in the whole.

The studies revealed that youthful abusers of the weed had arrested maturity levels at the time they abused. I’m thinking that our child president used the stuff from about 17 years old to 22. It was an amusing work of fiction, not a new bible. Those of use who produce in the real world – the engineers, inventors, and creators – are hoping the stimulus bill gets the economy moving again and the TARP funds directed at stabilizing the housing result in a controlled landing. But you can keep waving your little flag, it may be utterly useless but if it makes you feel better go for it.

Caring about Wall Street’s reaction is what got us into this mess. Obama did not create the financial crisis and he certainly will not cure it in one month or even one year. If you are Republican just vote for your guy in 2010 and your girl in 2012. When your team loses once again you can blame the media and Hollywood….again. Eventually, however, you will learn that governing is not easy and not everything Limbaugh and Hannity claim is accurate or in fact even honest. On the federal level it is about 1:110, or 0.9%. If you add in state and local, all those teachers, firemen, and policemen (the lazy sops on your tax dollars!) really bulk up the government roles to about 1:25 (for 2005). So, including everything from military to the guy who fills potholes in Peoria, about 4% of Americans work for government. So you’re only off by a factor of 15.

Bipartisanship is more than just letting someone in the door to sit in the back of the audience. Obama’s photo-op attempts at bipartisanship are hollow. Telling the other party that it was HE who won and to get over it shows his true colors. Bipartisanship means actually being respectful and humble (what he PRETENDED to do during the campaign) and sitting down with all sides to come to a mutually beneficial agreement. Obama has just broken several promises and shoved this stimulus down our throats using fear and ensuring there was no openness and time to look over the bill to make sure we actually get it right. But by doing this, he has fully attached this crisis to his own administration. This was not his crisis but it is his response. The response is what people will judge by.

Party and on and on.
He’s not on the side of all that’s good and right,
but promotes policies that will bring down our
country, morally and economically.
What can you expect from someone who shut down Gitmo (just where are those people going, pray
tell?) making our vulnerability to terrorism just that much worse.
Recently he had Winston
Churchill’s bust removed from the oval office (a
gift from our ally), congratualted the Venezualen people at keeping Chavez in as a
dictator, and many more
alarming things!
Let’s hope the country stays safe in spite of him, but it won’t be because of him. These
pollsters aren’t asking
anyone I know, and one has to suspect the polls
are slanted to show him
with high approval numbers.

The old adage “The bigger they are the harder they fall” will most assuredly apply to Barack Obama. Raised by his fanatic supporters to Olympian heights the reality will be more plebian and disappointment will quickly set in. This massive infusion of stimulus money will come at a high price for the future economic stability of the United States and will result in crushing debt, inflation and economic stagnation. Afganistan will prove to be his Vietnam, sucking away millions of dollars and the lives of thousands of Americans.
The American people reacted emotionally to trumped up fears in 2008 and elected a socialist with virtually no executive or business experience and will inevitably pay for it in the end.

What happened to the “HOPE” that he campaigned on? He signed a social bill that won’t help ‘stimulate’ the economy except for the individuals directly affected (field mice in San Francisco)! Where’s the President of the U.S.? Not the World, but the U.S.? He’s so busy spending our money and spewing gloom so we’ll all buy his story and sending the stock market to new lows. This is HOPE? He doesn’t know what he’s doing – he’s still in the mindset of a community organizer.

JHW – QUOTE: “Those of use who produce in the real world – the engineers, inventors, and creators – are hoping the stimulus bill gets the economy moving again and the TARP funds directed at stabilizing the housing result in a controlled landing. ”
Doesn’t look to me like you were trying to say that you, your wife and your friends think this is a good idea. Looks to me like you were trying to say that engineers, etc. all agree. I am also not surprised that you, your wife and your friends agree. I am willing to bet that you do have friend that think this is a horrible idea but are afraid to speak up. I have found that those people who scream the loudest about being diverse and accepting of different opinions tend to be the worst at it in practice. This article is just more of the same lies many Americans have come to expect from the so-called “Mainstream Media”. The problem now is an unaccountable press that is more interested – for why I can’t understand – in obfuscating and protecting Barack Obama and the democrat party. Too many Americans are either uninformed or, worse, misinformed by the criminal press. I call those Obama Voters and they really hurt the USA by voting for that fraud.

Traditionally, whenever our shadow-government-chosen leaders start to lose popularity the globalists stage a ‘false flag’ or the puppet themselves create a pretext for war to make the people pliable as we continue to march to a one-world fascist dictatorship. If you let this comment though, you stand with the people, if not, well you endorse feeding and injecting children with mercury, the militarization of the world, war, torture and total loss of freedom and grandma’s 401k.

Bill Clinton passed around a 450 billion stimulus package after first taking office. Republicans all voted against it, said it would lead to the end of the economy as we know it, was was destined to fail. Last I check the Clinton economy was very productive overall, creating quite a few jobs and the money invested from that stimulus helped in many ways make computers and the internet readily available. Fastforward to now and a much large financial crisis that requires a bigger response and again the Repub rhetoric is exactly the same. They had 8 years to try their top down tax cuts and the experiment failed and helped to create a huge deficit. Had Bush Jr. truly ever made the tough decisions he would have repealed his tax cuts to fund his wars, just like his father did during the Gulf War.

I voted for Obama because he was going to go through the budget with a scalpel and cut useless spending programs. OBAMA LIED! – He actually passed a package that will ADD MANY MORE USELESS SPENDING PROGRAMS!
The 90% that are supporting Obama are hypocrites! Just because Bush was spending like a mad man doesn’t make it right that Obama does!
signed – the 10% that are not happy with their vote!

Obama has done more to be bipartisan that I can remember for a number of years. He met quite a few times with republicans in the House and Senate, the republicans gained quite a few tax cuts after talking with Obama in the stimulus bill and some of the spending provisions they objected to the most were removed. I can not even think of a single time that Bush did anything like this, in fact he has vetoed tons of Democratic proposals in the last two years. Bipartisanship is not part of washington and will take time to develop. Republicans so far seem to be recalicitrant to compromise and it takes two to tango so to speak. I hope Obama continues to reach out and develop a rapport with some of the more moderate Republicans.

My daughter worked for a national polling institute in Chicago. She explained how easy it was to achieve the desired liberal-slanting results by: 1) Phrasing the questions in such a way as to prohibit deviation; and 2) Contacting people in specific geographic regions (i.e., inner cities based upon area codes and zip codes). By following those simple steps, they were able to achieve their desired results every single time. Nearly every polling institute in the U.S. is owned and operated by liberals (because Conservatives don’t legislate based upon polls, but instead based upon principles).

Iwasduped,
Apparently you never actually paid attention to what Obama said. For the most part I believe he has been consistent with his campaign promises. He said during the campaign he would pass a stimulus plan almost immediately, with spending and tax cuts for the middle class….He did that. He has been talking in recent days about after the economy has recovered to get back to fiscal responsiblity. These two ideas are contradictory only to those in a strict, unbending ideology. There should be flexibility in response during times of crisis and discipline on spending during good times. A rigid ideology does not allow one to adapt to changing conditions and roll with the punches. Obama seems to have a short term goal of stimulating the economy followed by a long term goal of stabilizing our deficit. Clinton did a similar thing shortly after taking office and had budget surpluses by the end.

The quote below is attributed to Sir Alex Fraser Tyler (1747-1813) and appears eerily relevant to the situation we currently find ourselves in.
“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”

The only reason Obama’s JARs are now just below 60% – Rasmussen, which accurately predicted the 2008 election, has him at 59% – is because people realize that if they turn against him right now, all hope is lost, because we are stuck with Obama for the next three plus years.
Otherwise, soon we will have a majority believing that Mr. Obama is an amiable dunce who got the CEO positiion when he should have gotten the mailroom delivery job first. Obama is so out of his element it is astonishing. He is naive when it comes to selecting a cabinet, he is naive when it comes to dealing with Iran, North Korea, and the Palestinians, and he is naive when it comes to the economy. His inexperience shows with each passing day.
That said, Obama’s promises of “cutting the deficit in half” and “I will create 3 million jobs” will be thrown right into his face in 2012, and because those things won’t happen he will be a one-termer.
Prediction: By the end of the summer, Obama’s job approval rating will be below 50%.

It’s not so odd that these serious partisan divisions came about with the advent of right-wing hate radio.
From nearly taking down a U.S. President in Clinton, to giving us that worst ever dolt Bush – it’s quite an historic parallel.

student: That concept was pretty nicely examined in Touqueville’s Democracy in America in 1835, if by ‘eerily relevant’ you meant ‘followed up on and abandoned as inaccurate a century and a half ago.’
The expectation by people who shared Tyler’s philosophy was that America would not last a generation. After it did, they accepted they were obviously wrong and worked to define why. Democracy in America is a dry but intriguing read, I highly recommend it.

Correct. For the most part (or at least I would hope) people form an opinion based upon the information they gather. When all the information you are given is the same, that will be your opinion. When other facts are allowed to brought to light, sometimes those opinions will differ. Maybe the Fairness Doctrine can be brought back so those fact the press doesn’t want to be brought to light can be squashed.

Just look what they think of each other-how could they possibly favor Obama?!…”“I don’t believe anything John Cornyn says. 25% of Americans still approved of George Bush on the day he left office. He was an unmitigated disaster in foreign policy, a wreck on domestic policy, and he left the country in ruins and under a mountain of debt. And yet these people still think he did a good job. So, assuming that 25% of Americans use ideology rather than facts to determine performance and therefore would NEVER say a Democrat is doing a good job, I guess these are impressive numbers.

When will you Democrats realize that the stimulus and outrageous spending is killing his approval ratings? Gallup has him below 60% and even Democratic support fell 3%.
Republican support is falling FAST. And soon those undecided/no opinion republicans (of which there is between 15-20%) will become disapproval and thats when it gets ugly.
Remember Bush had many no opinion ratings and as they began to convert to disapproval’s and thats when he began losing his ratings all together. Around 05 is when it snapped and his ratings crashed. Obama’s on pace to hit that mark around 2010-11

Bryan Chalker: “President BO and the dems today pushed it through with NO debate”
This is a lie. There was almost 3 weeks of debate, many amendments were proposed and some – INCLUDING ONES FROM REPUBLICANS – were accepted and included in the bill. For example, Tom Coburn (R) had an amendment included. And funding for contraceptives and renovation of the National Mall was removed based on debate.
Your argument would be stronger if it wasn’t sprinkled with blatant lies that call into question the integrity of everything you say.

Obama is NOTHING except a decent speaker. He is not even a great speaker. He talks as if he is highly confident and knowledgeable in all areas. He is a perfect example of “Jack of all trades and master of none.” He will prove himself to be just as average as all presidents when he does nothing.

Gives away alot of money, which I would like some for me. So, his cabinet, came from the swamplands of Illinois….Like don’t pay your taxes, and receive a cabinet post! And on, and on! While his democrat followers are still expecting him to desend down from the heavens with bountiful amounts of pork to bestow upon him, there is a remant that is finally starting to stop and question his motives. Maybe enough to start a revelation.

I love the way the MSM can ask poll questions to get their desired results! Why don’t you take polls that actually give the pollee a real choice of answers? I travel around the southeast, meet many people, and have yet to talk with anyone that would give Obama a positive rating. Unfortunately, the MSM have either bought into Obama’s rhetoric or are very afraid of him!

The 25% of those that still approved of Bush when he left office are smart enough to know he didn’t cause the problems of today, the democratic congress of the past 2 years did, along with the housing crisis going back to BILL CLINTON who lessened the criteria for home ownership so “anyone” could get a loan. Educate yourselves people!! Obama wants nothing more than socialism and that is where he is taking the country.

First of all your statement that Obama has reached across to Republicans is not true. Remember his response to the Republican Congressman who asked for a little compromise? He said “I won, I’m the President”. The Republicans were shut out of the “stimulus” bill and if it wasn’t for 3 traitors they could have blocked it and THEN gotten some “bi-partisanship”. If Obama continues on this path to destroying this country look for a march on Washington by this summer at the latest which will shock the world.

polls? you can do anything with statistics to prove whatever point you want to prove.
fact remains that the President is in over his head; does not have economic knowledge and those he has chosen in his cabinet are making a royal mess of the economy.
fact remains that the Democrat controlled Congress has joined kindergarten and put their Christmas wish list into action in all the legislative action that has taken place since they took control of Congress and have made a mockery of things since Obama took office.
Do I have confidence in the President…not sure…he is too busy trying to please people, look good and does not have a clue about economics or statesmanship.
I have less confidence in Congress; I see the members of Congress as self-serving and arrogant and not working in the best interest of the nation. This has gone on for years and is getting worse.
do I trust a poll run by any media group…nope

ARPAnet – - Intelligence-gathering and defense. So I should be impressed because the government is doing their job?
UNIVERSAL EDUCATION – You’re kidding, right?
INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM – Most of which could be run more cheaply and efficiently by the private sector.
SMALLPOX CURE – You can thank the ingenuity of scientists and doctors – NOT the government – for the Smallpox cure.
ENFORCEABLE BUSINESS CONTRACTS – Rules and regulations. Again, government is doing their job. Am I supposed to be impressed?
Which leaves us with MUNICIPAL SANITATION. Yeah…. I guess I could cede the collection of garbage to Obama and Biden. After all, look at the tax-cheating trash they pulled in for their administration. If THAT doesn’t stink to high Heaven, well then I don’t know what does.

Obama is pulling this country back from the brink that George Bush pushed us to. Bush squandered a $450 BILLION budget surplus given to him by Clinton, and turned it instead into a $1.2 TRILLION deficit. The Republicans know that Obama is doing the right thing to turn the economy around and the only option they have to avoid losing almost every seat they have left in the 2010 elections is to obstruct Obama’s recovery efforts as much as they can.

Someone above posted about the GOP “obstructionist tendencies”. You really make me laugh. The Dems control EVERYTHING! What else do you want. The Republicans have no power to “obstruct” as you state. As a matter of fact the Democrats won’t even offer the same courtesy that the Rep. gave to them when they were in power, by allowing their input and being able to offer alternatives. Peolsi has shut the Rep. out at every turn. They have closed the door and will not let them in to even offer alternatives. So stop with your “obstructionist” theory. Everything that is going on now is all on the Democrats shoulders! and THEIR FAILURE. They can pass everything their little hearts desire all buy themselves, but of course as usual they will somehow find a way to try and pass the blame on someone else. Hope your happy that the Dems are picking your pocket and sending you to the poor house. You voted for it, so don’t forget it.

The key number to watch isn’t Republican support for President Obama – it is the Independents support. You’ll notice in the first term numbers presented, the average approval tracks within 4 percentage points of the Independent approval rating.
Although it would be devastating for Democratic approval of the President to drop, the first real warning signs of trouble for President Obama would be shown by a drop in the Independents’ support. Which is not surprising, considering it was Independent voters that elected him and to whom he will answer in 2012.

How long will it take for the GOP to realize that Obama is stronger thanks to the stimulus and that the public is souring on their obstructionist tendencies?
What Planet do you live on? I remember Bush could do nothing right for 8 yrs. U may think I’m GOP but I’m not. I’m old enough to remember when Congress spent a great deal of my money and asked for more, inflation went up, unemployemnet went up, the dollar went down. The last president that believed in giving our money back and believed in a strong defense that I can remember was JFK (yes I’m old enough to remember). The dem’s think so highly of him but have short memory of his policies. JFK in his policies is right of McLame and someone like him would not be allowed to be a dem today. I’, not wealthy by any means (Last year I made $25,000.00). I have yet asked for any help from the government, served 10 yrs in the USMC during the 60′s(yes I was in Vietnam). So far from what I have seen President O has not been a man of his word, and no matter what station you have while on this earth, the only thing that really matters is one’s word. I didn’t vote for either of the two that were runing but did a write in. In my opinion Obama has little if any character. If you don’t understand the meaning look it up.

Chanakya – Bush did NOT have a surplus when he came into office – this is an oft repeated but incorrect statement – there was a projected surplus, but Bush took office with a SIX TRILLION DOLLAR deficit. Even Clinton said this during an interview last week. The projected surplus was wiped out by 9/11. The deficit was EIGHT TRILLION when the Democrats took over Congress six years later. It was Eleven Trillion just 2 years later. And is now Thirteen Trillion. So Bush/Repubs ran the deficit up two trillion in 6 years and the Dems ran it up five trillion in four years. BTW, I am not a Republican I am an Independent. But lets keep the numbers straight.

“Dose anyone here thinks that John McCain and Sarah Palin would have done a better job that Obama is doing right now?”
I do. At least McCain and Palin TALKED about helping out the business community, reforming and down-sizing government, and cutting taxes for businesses and consumers – - all things that get economies moving. Palin has a history of this in Alaska, and McCain is one of the most bi-partisan, reach-across-the-aisle, results-oriented Senators in Washington.
Contrast that with our Community-Organizer-in-Chief and his hair-plugged bumbler sidekick, who have done nothing but expand government, run up the biggest pork spending package in the history of the Universe, and become a source of laughter to Iran and Russia.
I’m CONVINCED McCain/Palin would have had us on the road to recovery by now, and would have remained tough with our enemies, to boot.

1. Open a new file in your computer.
2. Name it ‘Barack Obama’.
3. Send it to the Recycle Bin.
4. Empty the Recycle Bin.
5. Your PC will ask you: “Do you really want to get rid of ‘Barack Obama?”
6. Firmly Click ‘Yes.’
7. Feel better?

You are confusing deficit with debt. These are PROFOUNDLY different things. Please get up to speed on the basic terminology so we can tell if you’re lying or just ignorant.
And the projected surplus was roundly touted by President Bush (check out his first press conference) as the justification for his tax cuts – don’t you remember “This isn’t a surplus, it’s the taxpayer’s money – give it back”? It was a popular one-liner from the right for quite a while and used to justify the $300 refund checks. Sent out while our *debt* was in the trillions despite a few years of surpluses.

Yeah, I’ve never understood that argument. I would have thought the fiscally prudent thing would have been to pay some of the national debt down (which would save a nice bit of change on the interest payments). It is sad that the only time the government can seem to balance the budget (or have a budget surplus) is during economic booms, and even then they can’t address the national debt.

This claim is truly bizarre. Stronger? Obama’s rating (as the graphic shows) has been declining as more people learn about the “stimulus” bill. They don’t like it. They do not believe it will work. And they, by even larger margins, don’t like more corporate and bank bailouts.
Obama’s big-government radicalism has done what I (and many people) thought was impossible so soon: Revitalize the GOP into a fierce and effective opposition.

TeddyV,
Look up your facts before you accuse me of lying. In 1993, shortly after taking office, Clinton pass a $496 billion stimulus and deficit reduction program in response to the recession at the time. This happened, there are republican quotes talking about, there were news stories about it, and you can look up the resolution if you both to take the time before declarning me untruthful. Clinton passed this plan without a single republican vote, with most republicans saying back then what most republicans say now about Obama’s plan. My point is that the economy did well under Clinton, and that Obama’s plan is not without precedent in the modern era.

$34,000: the amount of federal taxes that Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner (D) failed to pay during his employment at the International Monetary Fund despite receiving extra compensation and explanatory brochures that described his tax liabilities.
$75,000: the amount of money that the head of the powerful tax-writing committee, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), was forced to report on his taxes after the discovery that he had not reported income from a Costa Rican rental property. His excuses for the failure started with blaming his wife, then his accountant and finally the fact that he didn’t speak Spanish.
$93,000: the amount of petty cash each Congressional representative voted to give themselves in January 2009 during the height of an economic meltdown.
$133,900: the amount Fannie Mae “invested” in Chris Dodd (D-CT), head of the powerful Senate Banking Committee, presumably to repel oversight of the GSE prior to its meltdown. Said meltdown helped touch off the current economic crisis. In only a few years time, Fannie also “invested” over $105,000 in then-Senator Barack Obama.
$140,000: the amount of back taxes and interest that Cabinet nominee Tom Daschle (D) was forced to cough up after the vetting process revealed significant, unexplained tax liabilities.
$356,000: the approximate amount of income and deductions that Daschle (D) was forced to report on his amended 2005 and 2007 tax returns after being caught cheating on his taxes. This includes $255,256 for the use of a car service, $83,333 in unreported income, and $14,963 in charitable contributions.
$800,000: the amount of “sweetheart” mortgages Senate Banking Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) received from Countrywide Financial, the details for which he has refused to release details despite months of promises to do so. Countrywide was once the nation’s largest mortgage lender and linked to Government-Sponsored Entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Their meltdown precipitated the current financial crisis. Just days ago in Pennsylvania , Countrywide was forced to pay $150,000,000 in mortgage assistance following “a state investigation that concluded that Countrywide relaxed its underwriting standards to sell risky loans to consumers who did not understand them and could not afford them.”
$1,000,000: the estimated amount of donations by Denise Rich, wife of fugitive Marc Rich, to Democrat interests and the William J. Clinton Foundation in an apparent quid pro quo deal that resulted in a pardon for Mr. Rich. The pardon was reviewed and blessed by Obama Attorney General and then Deputy AG Eric Holder, despite numerous requests by government officials to turn it down.
$12,000,000: the amount of TARP money provided to community bank OneUnited despite the fact that it did not qualify for funds, and was “under attack from its regulators for allegations of poor lending practices and executive-pay abuses.” It turns out that Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), a key contributor to the Fannie Mae meltdown, just happens to be married to one of the bank’s ex-directors.
$23,500,000: The upper range of net worth Rep. Allan Mollohan (D-WV) accumulated in four years time according to The Washington Post through earmarks of “tens of millions of dollars to groups associated with his own business partners.”
$2,000,000,000: ($2 billion) the approximate amount of money that House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-WI) is earmarking related to his son’s lobbying efforts. Craig Obey is “a top lobbyist for the nonprofit group” that would receive a roughly $2 billion component of the “Stimulus” package.
$3,700,000,000: ($3.7 billion) not to be outdone, this is the estimated value of various defense contracts awarded to a company controlled by the husband of Rep. Diane Feinstein (D-CA). Despite an obvious conflict-of-interest as “a member of the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee, Sen. Feinstein voted for appropriations worth billions to her husband’s firms .”
$4,190,000,000: ($4.19 billion) the amount of money in the so-called “Stimulus” package devoted to fraudulent voter registration ACORN group under the auspices of “Community Stabilization Activities”. ACORN is currently the subject of a RICO suit in Ohio.
$1,646,000,000,000 ($1.646 trillion): the approximate amount of annual United States exports endangered by the “Stimulus” package, which provides a “Buy American” stricture. According to international trade experts, a “US-EU trade war looms”, which could result in a worldwide economic depression reminiscent of that touched off by the protectionist Smoot-Hawley Act.
It’s not just a culture of corruption. It’s a culture of corruption and stupidity. And, unlike Republicans, Democrats appear to be above the law. All of the aforementioned clowns are still in office, ruling like the royalty they’ve become.
For those of you who are wondering ..”Is that All?” .. we did leave out Bill Richardson and Sen Burris since their cases have yet to be resolved, but folks, how would you sum up this garbage??

Most of the conservatives blogging here are no different than Rush limbaugh. The really want Obama and America to fail for no other reason other than Obama doesn’t play for their team. And they will interpret anything and everything Obama does as a failure, regardless of the facts. People are putting the same type of zealousness into political partisianship as they do towards rooting for their favorite sport team.

I love reading these posts.
It is amusing to see people actually think politicians work for us. That they have our interests at heart.
Obama is a politician. This means he is loyal to himself first / party second / all those peeps lining his pockets third / and then when it get time for re-election he will appear to care about us.
The GOP was weak for 8 years. The DNC has remained true to itself in that its a corrupt party of elite “know it alls”.
They say Obama is reaching out to the GOP. Really??????? Where????? Since when is “I won its my way” considered reaching out???????
Bush gets ZERO bipartism credit for all those bills he let the Democrats write. Anyone remember Teddy Kennedy and the education bill. Teddy wrote it / it flopped / Bush got blamed. Theres your bipartism.
Bottom line is the GOP and DNC have one thing in common. They BOTH only care about getting elected and not the people.

Dave said, “At what point will B.O. and his buddies own this economy and not blame it all on Bush? 2010? 2012? The economy had a cut on it’s finger and these guys immediately performed open heart surgery; it looks like the patient (us!) will be in the ICU for a long time. Ultimately, things will right themselves but not because of government intervention! B.O., Pelosi and Reid should all be ashamed of themselves for saddling my children with this huge burden of debt.”
————————————–
It takes about 18 months to a few years for policies put in place to take effect within the system. That being said, the strife we feel today is from policy put in place years ago under the Rep house and Sen and GW. The debt you are complaining about tripled under GW. Although Dem do like to spend they tend to tax to get the revenue rather than over spend. The Reps have cut taxes and increased spending. Please tell me how this is fiscally responsible? You are upset that the Dems took over again and you are lashing out in haste with mis-information. This “Huge burden of debt” is thanks to GW. The less than 1 trillion just added on is less than 1/12 of the total national debt and it is needed to jump start credit and spending. Why can’t Reps see further than the now? You need to see the broader picture of our future. Obama is trying to get the annual deficit under half of what it is now….That’s hard enough to do much less get it balanced again, which by the way it was under Clinton. You have an invalid assumption because your party lost and now you have to pee in someone’s Wheaties to make yourself feel better.

It appears some of us are liking the bad times and gloom a little too much. Can you find anything in the last 30 days to feel good about? If not it will get much worse over the next 4 years. I really hope every single thing we knew as normal the last eight years will be turned on its head. I hope we have to take a new look at every thing we do in Washington and that the ways that are changed never come back I hated every moment of Bushes time in offices and am very glad it ended without any more harm being done.We need to be very careful going forward in whom we give so much power, it has been evil and I treasure every moment I have now to reflect on President Obamas efforts at reform.

The Republican representatives, governors and leaders have shown by their actions that they have no interest in the welfare of this nation, but instead are clearly intent upon doing whatever they can to destroy it … in the name of partisan politics. They, and their henchmen (O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Coulter, etc.)–no matter what their age or gender–are like bitter old men, hanging out on the porch, angry that the country didn’t vote they way they TOLD it to. Having been so invested in “the world will end if Obama is elected” stance, they simply cannot bring themselves to acknowledge that their vision was not–and is no–shared by the majority of Americans, and instead will now do whatever they can to create the ugly world that they apparently want so desperately. Republicans: you got us into this mess; get on board or get out of the way.

Obama’s approval rating is only 59 percent (and sinking)? That doesn’t make sense. Americans voted RESOUNDINGLY for change last November. Liberal logic dictates that Obama’s approval rating should therefore be at 100% or higher. Obviously, the 41 percent that gave Obama a negative rating are either obstructionist Republicans, or brainwashed sheeple who listen to Rush Limbaugh. It certainly can’t be that people are starting to dislike Obama’s socialist ideas, because that would mean that they disapprove of MY ideas, and I’m smarter than they are.

——————————
Actually it was Pilosi who said that. Obama never did. Obama did reach out to the Reps when he went to the hill and the Reps sent out a notice to not deal with the President when he showed up. That is him reaching out and them not wanting to be seen with him. How is that bi-partisin on the rights part?

What’s so eye opening about this? Those that voted for him have no idea what he stands for, and as a result we have had the WORST first 30 days in recent history. The only hope we have is changing the house in 2 years. Over 60% of the bogus SPENDING in this stimulus bill doesn’t happen until AFTER 2010. By that time those Americans that have a brain, will know that it takes more than being “black” to be elected president(as was the case this time around). We will have a HUGE mess in a couple of years, but just like Clinton’s big election…2 years later Gingrich swept in and turned everything around. Obama has done NOTHING as a president yet. The stimulus was written up by Pelosi and her ilk long b4 Obama was elected. He is simply their puppet, and it’s most embarrassing to even watch. He blames Bush for the deficit he was handed, but he had no problem ballooning it $750B in less than a month. The doom/gloom President has MUCH to do with the stock market today. He’s setting everything up to be so bad so when he fails he won’t have to take the blame. Hope for the best people…prepare for the worst.

Don’t you Republicans ever get tired of parroting every thing you hear coming out of Hannity, Limbaugh, and O’Reilly? Don’t you think for yourselves? You call the stimulus a pork-barrell spending bill because that is what Hannity, Limbaugh, and O’Reilly call it, when in actuality the earmarks account for a very small percentage of the overall package. You’re complaining of nickels and dimes in a thousand dollar budget. Most economists say we need a stimulus package and that, if anything, this stimulus package is too small. Listen to economists, not Republicans who pretend to know everything.

Do the Republicans know how to do anything other than criticize? I’m tired of hearing all these whiny Republicans complaining because they weren’t included in the formation of the stimulus package, whining because the stimulus package has a bit of pork in it, whining that there are not enough tax cuts in it, huffing about mortgage bailouts (but not huffing about bank bailouts), crying over the possibility of nationalizing banks (thats what happens when you ask the FDIC for help). Quit yer bitchin and come up with something creative! People have had it with a do-nothing congress that puts politics in front of people! The GOP is going to be known as the Grand Obstructionis Party and lose even more seats in 2010. Let it be written.

The disaster of the Obama administration during its first month was predictable, given President Obama’s past behavior. Most people took Obama on his word instead of looking at his record. The problem now is that those in delusion about this president may never change their opinion about him not matter how bad he is.
We have the malpractice of most of the media to prop him up and the brain-washed liberals who will never see any problems with a fellow liberal. We also have the double standards and rejudices against conservatives. Half of President Obama’s appointees would be in jail already if they were Republican, and Obama daily contradictions/hypocrisies would have destroyed anyone else.
We have not investigated the Congressional wrong doing in the mortgage crisis and the actions of the federal government so far are the worst medicine for a financial crisis. The only thing keeping me from despair is that the economy is not as depressed as it was under the Carter administration . . . but this administration could send it there.

After all that … it’s the best Obama can do. Like others have stated, he just missed the biggest gift ever offered to a new pres, a chance to rise above it all and offer real hope and change. Instead, America got the biggest pork barbecue in the history of the world.

Let’s vote about our favorite parts of his ‘transparency’; would it be A) the 1,000 page welfare bill not even the politicians inside committee had time to read or B) the scripted ‘press conferences’ he gives with questions handed out to his favorite sycophant reporters?
Housing values are in the toilet so Obama figures if he drives everyone’s 401(k) plans and retirement plans to zero then we are all equal – completely broke like his welfare constituents. Nothing like killing all the productive parts of society to make sure we all share the same amount of nothing.

I think you’ll find that if the media actually played this empty suited charlatan fair the number of Ind. would drop dramatically. The media has all but played the Rep’s as obstructionists – that is a bunch of crap. There are a whole lot more than just republicans who have big problems with these spending bills, but the press isn’t really sharing that – they just keep doing the same thing they did during the campaign – ‘The messiah, his empty suitedness, Obama’. Disgusting and in my opinion TREASON!.
The American people have two very big problems; a biased, dishonest and agenda driven media and Congress!

What clowns you Dem’s are. Obama has fleeced the US tax payer for Trillions using fear (I guess that’s ok when it’s your guy)
Take the poll again in 6 months when Unemployment is at 14%, then 15%, then riots in the streets, so much for the “Stimulus” package.
Hard to imagine anyone stupider or more arrogant than Obama and his zombie supporters
The Republicans “Obstructionism” only plays as long as hope is alive, and it’s about to be hung, shot, burned and burried.

Really, wouldn’t it be wise to try and support the President in these tough econmic times whether you voted for him or not. The fact is that the Rep. did not win the election and spending your time trying to down play everything the Dem and Obama does is just counter productive holisticly. We are in this position and I’m not even going to mention about the previous president………the people have spoken and one should put as much effort into trying their best to get through this as much as you are beating the stimulus, legislation, etc up!!!
Finally, in a marriage there are numerous things that you may disagree with but in the end the two should have a common goal even with your differences. Republicans………..very simple, its not our turn. Accept it and lets do our best to move out of this position instead of playing the blame game!!!!

Posted by: BrentW | February 24, 2009, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm
Why should Republicans support this president’s efforts? He is growing the federal government far beyond anything intended by the Framers, to the detriment of our general welfare; the stimulus porkfest and the inevitably resulting tax hikes are going to sink our economy, not stimulate it. Obama’s plan goes against all Republican principles, so Republicans cannot support it. Since when did dissent stop being patriotic?

To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government.
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them…..
It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.
Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Never spend your money before you have earned it.
Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.

Democrats have a vested interest in perpetuating an underclass, making people think that the rich are taking advantage and perpetuating racial disharmony. Those characteristics are what drive the common democratic voters. Without those people, democrats wouldn’t get elected because we would all be republicans resisting the government from “sharing the wealth.”
That is why democrats would rather bring the rich down rather than raise up the poor. That is the philosophy of “hope” rather than “results.” Give the masses just enough relief to give them a reason to hope, but DO NOT deliver the promised land, becasue the masses will become republicans. think about it.

Once the people realize they have been sold a “Bill of Goods” the approval ratings should go down. The favorable media support and the Class Warfare game got him into power but his ratings will be going down if he fails on many more of his promises. He can only blame Bush for a few more months before he is going to have to own the presidency, then we will see.

News for right wingers & conservatives on this site: Obama got 8 million more votes than McCain. You’re in the minority. Your ideas were tested with GW Bush for 8 years. They stunk. You haven’t figured out any way to reach out to people except for aging white men. Look at the poll numbers objectively. 2/3 of the country approve of Obama – and can I add he has been President for one month – and 60% approve of the stimulus.
You can make valid arguments against Obama and/or the stimulus package but to somehow infer that at this moment in time, the majority of Americans agree with you, is ridiculous.

Like others have said; on this site it took time for us to get into this mess and President Obama walked into it. Let’s have our dear old Senators and Congressmen take the party gloves off and start doing their jobs, work with this President. Then in four years put their gloves back on and fight party against party in the next election. American people want government to do their jobs.

Obama’s biggest misstep was when he did not veto the “pork” bill and demand that the Democrats actually craft a real stimulus package. He would have gained a groundswell of support that would have filled his political capital account for years to come. Seeing as how our descendants will pay for this debt, (not really, they will refuse to pay and the USA will default on it’s payments to China) then the bulk of the spending should have been directed to roads, bridges, and nuclear energy plants. Things that would last a 100 years and actually provide tangible benefits. Rather most of the money is for operative costs, feed the bureaucracy. Obama is a smart man. So why such a grandiose blunder? Is he inexperienced or is he a rabid Socialist (or both)? Time will tell.

Analyse, scrutinize and pulverize as you will….the bottom line is that the “jury ” is still out on Obama, and the prospects are very questionable. I personally think he should be on Ritalin or Prozac for his frenzied and manic obsession to “change the world” in 100 days. Perfect example of ADD! It took the Almighty “one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as one day” etc. Obama is using the “shot gun method” of change: shoot a blast and hope some bullets strike a target. And it will be the American people. The constant changing of plans, division among the suppporters, conflicting goals announced. All very unsettling. His constant speech-a-fying is a a reminder of his lack of any hands on experience. The “group-therapy ” session was truly adolescent, worthy of a junior high class counselor. but totally embarrassing for “leaders”. It was so condescending!! And the thousands of dollars spent on “gathering” useless infor and the cost of compiling the report is a perfect example of Obama’s immaturity in basic “cost of doing” issues. Only thousands? Well they do add up to millions, which add up to billions, which add up to trillions.

Obama polling is always going to be distorted because any blacks polled during his term are going to be uncritical no matter what the situation. The percentage of those questioned who identify as being black should be stated in any Obama poll so people can get a more realistic view of the results.
In fact, all Obama polls should be tabulated two ways, blacks included and excluded.

But undoubtably, the people new what they were voting for, they voted for the Deomcrats, they voted for a left-wing borderline communist president and they got what they voted for.
Blame Boehner and McConnell. The failure of this crop of republicans to carry on the ideals of Gingrich and Armey, to control spending and to constrain government while they controlled it led to this. They need to go.

Glancing through these comments, I am amazed at the depths of ignorance and partisan rants, peppered with revisionist history and outright fabrications.
For a full 80 to 85% of the posters on this article, patriotism toward their country is dead as a doornail, a stinking corpse.
It’s a sad commentary on the pathetic level to which our populace has sunk.
Obama has been president for 36 days and he is obviously considered a magician to have wreaked so much damage to the country in such a short time.
To listen to them, you would think George W. Bush as president never existed.
They attempt to reach back across his shoulders and collar Bill Clinton, when their blame gets too intolerable to be rational.
Thank God, these idiots are far and away in the minority in this country, as 3 polls — ABC, NYTimes and WPost make clear.
Even Gallup has to bend over backwards to find Obama at minutely under 60% (Gallup reports 59%-plus).
So the polls are well in line with each other and this neo-con mania may be buried, one of these daze, I hope.

Not about Obama, Reid nor Pelosi.
Neither about race nor party, but about having reached a sufficient number of dependent drones. We have acheived critical mass.
How can government’s expanding role in our lives be beneficial when freedom is the price paid for every benefit?
******
“Yes we Can”– can you think of a more ironic campaign slogan? The bearer implies cheerful servitude in exchange for avoidance of risk, responsibility and mostly of reward.
Revise the Stimulus to 100 trillion,
complete the demise of this nation, and let us start over. Bring it all down.
Yes, we can.

Divided between those that seek and expect handouts and those that are forced to give (Beyond their control) handouts!!!! My question is how are they, (The gods in charge, the governors, the ones that have chosen themselves, as being worthy, of being in charge of Angelic duties) going to break the addiction of handouts? Will they be assembled and sent door to door to collect their handout, or will they Rob you on their own, (No-one will be able to distinguish between the two tactics)? The year is 2009, count back to zero and you find Jesus!!!! The only man that has a Calendar recording his existance (Which they dispute, while dating their document with the date of the years since his existance), said he could teach a man to fish and he would eat for a lifetime or he could give a man a fish and he would eat for a day. Obama and his team of Socialists have chosen to try a different approach to that parable, they are doing exactly the opposite!!!!! They are doing that because they want to be greater than Jesus, THEY want to be your god, take care of your every need and ensure that they give you a fish every day, puts more value in them. If you feed yourself, then they don’t have no-one to feed, therefore the less they are needed, the less of a care-taker they are.

I find the president’s talk of being post-partisan laughable in light of the intense ideological thrust of all of his actions, thus far, since his inauguration. The “Stimulus” bill was nothing but pure democrat pork and, of course, our mainstream media, has done absolutely nothing to spell out the truth of that fact. Our media, very sadly, only continues to be a public relations tool for Barack Obama.

The important thing is the trend: Obama’s job approval rating has been going steadily down for several weeks now.
Posted by: fsteele | February 24, 2009, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm
You cannot be as ideologically as far to the left as Obama is and expect him to be a bipartisan uniter. That is utterly laughable and he is demonstrating almost daily that reality. The same would be the case for a politician to the far right.
Why would anyone with an ounce of common sense believe that Obama’s first month in office would have turned out any different than an exercise in on the job training. Wasn’t it Joe Biden who said the presidency does not lend itself to that. His resume revealed a total lack of experience governing anything or dealing with tough decision making and virtually no significant accomplishments. His main achievement has been to play the role of carnival barker pedaling the Pelosi-Reid porkulus bill which along with the other trillions in debt he is signing off on will spend us and our children into oblivion. Too many Americans rolled the dice last November and will now pay the price.

30 days on the job doesn’t make him a failure or a success, just new. I wish he would stop campaigning and start working on the bi-partisanship he talked about.
I think his approval ratings would go up if he could figure out a way to get a different Speaker of the House…..

This lying fool has spent more in the first 3 weeks of his presidency than was spent in the entire 8 years of Bush on the War in Iraq, the War in Afghanistan and Hurrican Katrina. This is payback time for Conservatives. Payback for 8 years of abuse heaped on our President. A brave, generous and strong man. A man, who ignored public opinion polls and did what was right and required. To defend the Country and to defeat the Islamics.
If you think we will give Hussein a pass – you are delusional. He will be burned, stabbed and pilloried by us just as viciously as you did it to our guy.

Perhaps a major reason for the bankrupcy of the “MainStream Media” is that a substantial percentage of the population no longer trusts their motives. The absolute adoration granted to any Democrat compared to the demonization of any Republican on any issue is so blatent that most newspaper and television “journalists” no longer serve a useful function in society.
Is it any wonder that the New York Times, McClatchy, Gannett etc. have lost almost of their shareholders money? Not really, since they long ago lost their readers trust.

He’ll say it’s not my fault its bad but it’s going to be good. He states it like it’s a fact and then promises a laundry list of stuff that he can’t possibly pull off.

Obama’s ratings are interesting in that he has been more bipartisan than his numbers reflect. He has embraced some of the very right wing ideas that abandon his base: like “state secrets”, rendition, increasing the military, increasing military pay and more troops to Afghanistan (next troops to Darfur). Yet, the base loyalty remains and the far right has not softened. Maybe both should pay more attention to actions?

I would like to comment on some of the issues that were stated in our Presidents’ address to Congress dated February 24, 2009.
Hurrah for President Obama! Finally the pay of our soldiers will be addressed. Most of the soldiers that I have met, myself being the mother-in-law of an Army Sergeant, qualify for food stamps. That is scandalous. We don’t pay our soldiers enough to feed their children. This country should be made aware of this horrible state of affairs. Thank God that our President wants to raise the pay of our soldiers. They should, at least, be able to feed thier children if they are willing to protect our country.
I would also like to mention the problems with our healthcare system. Our government needs input from assorted hospital administrators. The hospital systems must remain privatized but most of the disfunctional hospitals and medical groups in this country are being destroyed by bad debt to illegal aliens and uninsured honest middle Americans who cannot afford health insurance the way that the insurance industry charges for individual healthcare insurance premiums.
It is against the law in the State of California to ask for proof of legal residency when an individual applies for welfare or any other service that is government run. I do not want my taxes to pay for the health costs of people who sneak into our country illegally. I don’t mind if it is one of our own citizens. It is criminal to do what many of the illegal aliens are doing, purposely. It is well known that if a woman is pregnant sneaks into the country and gives birth here, she will not be forced to go back home because her child is then a citizen, and so the cycle starts. Have a new child every 2 years so that each child can allow her to re-apply for services and collect benefits that are meant for our own citizens. I was a social worker for Los Angeles County and experienced the frustration of having my hands tied when I suspected abuse of our welfare system. Just one change in the law would save millions of dollars on the money that is paid for these people. It is not just for aid to families with dependent children (AFDC), it is also for individuals on general relief (GR). It is said that illegal aliens do the work that others do not want to do but that is not the truth. It is so very unfair to those who apply for VISA’s. Why should those who enter the country illegally not be forced apply for VISA’s? That is the law! If people who are taking applications for services would only be allowed to ask if a person is a citizen and may ask for proof of that, many will apply for thier VISA’s instead of sneaking into the country and costing tax payers millions upon millions of dollars and keeping the people who are citizens or aliens visiting legally from getting the few jobs that are available.
Mind you, our own soldiers who have a spouse and a couple of children (or perhaps more) usually cannot afford food, diapers and other normal expenses. These soldiers, in most instances, are not carrying a lot of debt.
Please, won’t someone pay attention to these issues?

Any time you see the words “the government will be funding/spending/investing” replace that with “through my taxes I will be buying” and see if it still looks like a good idea to you.

Obama gets credit for ‘reaching across the aisle’ yet more Democrats voted against him than there were Republicans voting FOR him. Not a single headline made THAT the story. Obama’s ‘reaching’ across the aisle was basically to hold the GOP at arms length while Pelosi and Reid wrote the largest pork-laden spending bill ever even dreamed of. No GOP members in the conference committee and then a second conference ONLY between Nancy and Harry???
Obama has the largest majority he will ever see on his side of the aisle (and larger than anybody has for 50+ yrs) so he is making a mad dash to get in as much of the liberal utopia as he can before voters get a shot at those member of Congress.
Obama has not stopped campaigning yet. And he won’t likely stop. Ever. Campaigning and running for office is the only accomplishment he has on his resume. He did nothing in his last job before asking for the promotion. He did little of substance in that job prior to that. This is not the sign of a guy who gives a crap about ‘post-partisanship’ or bi-partisan anything. He is going as far to the Left as he can as fast as he can until there is some kind of checks and balance restored to the government. And that won’t happen for nearly 23 months. And in less than 30 days he has already spend $800B and proposed another $275B more and there in another $410B on the table in Congress PLUS whatever pork he promised tonight.
There is no enough money in existence amongst all the countries in the world to pay for all of the ‘responsibility’ Obama would like to impose on all of us. And there certainly aren’t enough rich people to tax to make the Federal Debt go back into the 10 digit range again.
Thank God he can do all this while taking the weekends off. Those are the only two days of the week that he isn’t appearing on TV. At some point, the rest of the country will end up joining the GOP in not wanting to see Him on TV every single day for a second year in a row. Unless you are in the Obama Cult, this is gonna get incredibly tiresome. Or we could just run out of money before that point comes. 6-5, pick em.

As more and more of the population begins to realize the extent of the economic peril this guy has put us in, the ratings will continue to drop. Interestingly, despite all the hype and hoopla from the media, most of the people I’ve met do not approve of this so-called stimulus bill and are angry that the public in general has so little input into what are ultimately OUR affairs. Jindal pointed out that the Republicans had lost their way and joined the big government, big spending team in DC. He’s correct. Those of us who voted for them were extremely disappointed and upset with their casual approach to spending other people’s money and their total deafness to our complaints and concerns. A major component in their losses came, not from the fact that everyone loved Obama, but from the fact that the opposing party had abandoned its principles. I hope someone in Washington develops some common sense before all is truly lost.

Nothing but lies from Obama, meaning Washington as usual as can be. If people actually looked at what he did rather than said, they would be singing a different tune. He closed Guantanamo, but specifically wrote in that people can be picked up, held without trial, and flown to the Middle East to be held for “questioning”, which sorry to say is WORSE than Guantanamo. That’s just one example. If you Obama supporters are honest, just go with that and look up the rest yourselves. Bush was terrible, as was Clinton, as was Bush Sr., as was Reagan, and Obama is no different, nor other predecessors. Their popularity is based on, well, the image they were able to maintain despite all the crap they did to the country. We need to collectively realize that government intervention results in evil and fascism always. When you realize that, you can start making intelligent decisions about who you vote for, and we can stop getting these staged elections like we had again with McCain vs. Obama.

Obama is a media creation. The polls cited in this piece of propaganda are highly disputed by other polls which show obama has only an approval rating in the 40′s, and a disapproval rating in the 30′s. These are nearly unprecedented lows after a first month in a new administration. Whay are these ratings so low? Becuase people are beginning to see that obama was a bill of goods sold to them by the media. As the markets continue to react negatively to every socialist measure from the obama administration, and Americans find themselves more at risk by foreign enemies because the obama adminstration is weak, we will see his approval ratings continue to sink to jimmy carter levels and the misery index will drive the electorate back to its senses.

“Don’t forget, Bush came into office with a surplus then proceeded to put us two trillion dollars in debt. His policies have caused the deaths of thousands and the destruction of America’s place in the world. Obama, by the sheer fact of being elected, has already raised America’s profile, because thinking democracies know a leader when they see one.” -Chanakya
Chanakya, go do research before stating tired old liberal talking points. The “surplus” Bush inherited was a BUDGET surplus, meaning the federal budget was balanced (net zero) and that was *only* for fiscal year 2000. Clinton ran a budget deficit all other years of his presidency (running some sort of budget deficit is actually normal, you know). I love it when liberals use the “surplus” talking point, because I always shoot them down, without fail. Also, the public debt as a percentage of GDP (which is how debt SHOULD be measured) under Bush, while increasing slightly, WAS AND REMAINED at levels not seen since the mid 1980′s (and less than under Clinton). Federal spending is what we have to reign in, which unsurprisingly, is what we are facing! You also complain that Bush added $2 trillion to our debt (over his entire presidency, mind you) while your man Obama has managed to match HALF of that in just 30 days! Incredible. Liberals need a reality check.

Peter Schiff who for YEARS predicted this collapse is vehemently opposed to this. Jim Roges, Soros fund PARTNER, moved to SINGAPORE because he is so certain that the US is on the decline. The producers in this country are opposed to this as evidenced by the DOW response to any speech Obama makes about the economy. Obama is on a one way path to destroying this country.
By the way, ALL of his economists are Keynesian (read SOCIALIST) in their market theory, but they have taken it fartehr than even Keynes himself recommended. Keynes stated numerous times that the gov’t could only act as a primer, but too much gov’t interference would destroy the market. This is WAY BEYOND that point.
The only “good” that will come out of this is it will for once and forever put an end to democrat rule or say in economic matters, and finally put an end to Keynesian philosophy. You would have thought that watching Europe decline we woyuld have learned that lesson long ago.

Economists do not like this
I’m no economist but obviously neither are you, nor is Peter Schiff…he’s a stock broker.
This economy has always been and always will be a blended economy or a Keynesian economy. Your attempt to equate that to socialism is disingenuous at best.

Milton Friedman, did you notice that in the link you provided it only called for half of what the democrats shoved through? What the congress/president signed is not what those economists suggested.

If you Republican bloggers can tell me of one Republican president who balanced the budget and left us with a surplus I will be happy to know who that is..As far asI know..there is none..I know of three Democrat presidents who did both. That speaks volumes of the the Republican fiscal policy..a load of crap..called trickle down economics..one of their very own called it voodoo economics. Republican praty is bad for this country..

Stanley, you do realize that it’s congress that actually determines the final budget right?

Who are the idiots that think he’s doing the right thing with the economy? My god, this guy is will RUIN the economy. The problem here is they must be polling a bunch of uneducated fools. This country is our collective “home” and the goverment under Obama is “re-financing” it for an unsustainable lifestyle just like the stupid homeowners did. Millions wanted to live beyond their means and now so does the government. The taxpayers will become like the homeower who couidn’t afford to pay their inflated mortgage. The problem is, who is going to bail out the government??????????????????

It seems to me that these ‘approval rating’ numbers are just a bit off. I seriously question the accuracy of the surveys. Lets face facts. He only got just over 50% of the popular vote. If anything, after spending a trillion dollars of our hard earned tax money his approval rating dropped. This sounds like more of the typical left biased reporting I’ve come to expect…

Republicans are a disgrace to America! The last republican presient cheated and lied about WMD, spent billions on a needless war for personal reasons and tortured anti-humanely…let alone led the country into this economic mess!!! Now, you still have the cheek to comment.

PLEASE STOP the finger pointing, nasty comments and so on. What has become of America? What have you done lately for the upliftment of yourselves, your community and your country? You talk about the many people who have their hands out so to speak – The party who lost and the rich and famous of the stock market and banks are to blame for this. bug them. Change within yoursleves first, show kindness to others and see the positive change in our country

If Obama was his hero FDR, He would stop the d-day invasion to negotiate with the “moderate” Nazi’s.

Obama is doing a fine job so far, and he’s pulling in ratings better than Reagan at this time.
Reagan started this partisanship divide we see now with his idiotic ‘trickle down economics’ – a system that created a huge class struggle that exists to this day.
Reagan was a terrible president, probably worse than Bush 2.

Wow, wading into this quagmire of negativity is almost surely a Republican enclave of disaffected sore losers. Look, it should be clear by now that Obama understands your pain and he is doing everything he can to accelerate the “ripping off quickly of the delusional bandage” Republicans have always offered to fix things. Let’s look at all the wounds of the last eight years headon and face the fact that America needs to grow up and stop panicing about showing a little social consciousness. A little empathy and support for each other goes a long way to providing some security for all in terms of health care, education and less military provocation in lands so far away.
It’ll be fine.. now get back to work, the election is over. ;-)

It’s incredible considering the gawd awful mess he inherited. We knew we were going to have to live with that persistent low number of racists who are infuriated about his presidency – but it’s pathetic that so few republicans seem able to think for themself and differ with a lockstep mentality that seems to be dictated by Rush Limbaugh. Republicans have something of value to bring to the equation – they are just so many who seem to be intent on limiting the focus of their party to self righteous finger pointing and daring to pontificate on dollars spent after having been notoriously silent during the last eight years.
