Tax Woes for Obama Labor Nominee, Too

ABC’s Rick Klein reports: Another day, another tax problem for a prominent Obama administration nominee. USA Today is reporting that on Wednesday, the husband of Obama’s Labor Secretary nominee paid some $6,400 to settle tax liens that had been in place for as long as 16 years. The disclosure came just hours before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee was to consider Rep. Hilda Solis’ nomination. Shortly after the story was posted to the newspaper’s Website, the committee postponed the hearing without giving an explanation. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that the White House was aware of the tax liens but was not concerned because it does not directly implicate Solis. “We’re not going to penalize her for her husband’s business mistakes,” Gibbs told reporters. According to USA Today, “Los Angeles County records showed 15 outstanding state and county tax liens against [Sam] Sayyad and his auto repair business, totaling $7,630. Two other liens worth $981 were released in 1999 after Sayyad repaid the taxes owed, according to county records.” The disclosure is likely to be met with frustration — if not anger — in political circles. It comes just two days after two prominent Obama appointees were forced to withdraw their nominations because of tax issues. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner saw his nomination confirmed despite tax lapses that weren’t fixed until after they were highlighted during the vetting process.

so the female canidates can be ruled out for one thousand dollars owed, or 6K owed by their spouse, but the male canidate is okayed with 40K owed, when he signed a paper promising to pay it, and when he was handed the money to payit.
we have a tax cheat as head of the IRS.

Obama’s integrity ethics and judgment were the first things to go in the first month of him being a president.

Yeah, sure. GO, you need to go – to hell! Obama is doing the best job he can under the circumstances and if he nominates someone who unfortunately has tax problems, (as I am sure every politician does or has had in the past, including lots of Republicans, too!!) then it is indeed unfortunate, but doesn’t mean that Obama is at fault. He is attempting to choose the best people for each job and sadly, these people just aren’t that honest. I doubt there are any politicians who are squeaky clean. Just ask your gal, Sarah.

Posted by: geecee | February 5, 2009, 4:27 pm 4:27 pm

I’m SURE there are PLENTY of Republican hides that could be hung out to dry if any of them were being nominated for anything worth mentioning (besides DOG CATCHER). Sorry I don’t mean to insult dog catchers, but you get the drift. President Obama can only go by what his staff is telling him. I’m sure he is doing the best he can with this horrendous situation he was left with, and all this distraction is not helping matters at all. He needs to find out where the problem is with the vetting, and fix that so he can get back to fixing our country before there is nothing left to fix!!

Amazing! Who would think that so many “trusted” Washingtonites could owe so much money. We could reduce our national debt just collecting from these sandbaggers.

Why should this woman be penalised for HER HUSBAND’S wrongs?
Why should someone who hasnt paid their taxes not be allowed to work in government? If it was due to fraudulent behaviour..then no. To me, if you can do your job and be of service to your country you should be given the chance. Its like telling Wesley Snipes he can no longer act. Come on guys…no one’s perfect.
Remember people..Geitner was APPOINTED by Obama, but was APPROVED by the Senate. So all the arms of government are at fault here.

With all of these nominees, who’ve probably been earning lots more than minimum wage, coming up with tax problems, its doubtful they’re doing their own taxes even if they are CPAs and financiers; they’re having someone else do the work. Isn’t this a stellar example of why the U.S. tax laws need a massive major overhaul and soon? They’re so darn complicate and convoluted it’s a wonder even the IRS can figure out what applies to whom.

ABC has broken a story sure to rock the political world. Reporter Scott Mayerowitz has discovered that Barack Obama’s compensation is actually more than the recently reported $400,000. Unbeknownst to many, in addition to that large 6-figure sum, Obama is allowed to use, TAX FREE, a very fancy limo which comes with a driver for whom he does not pay.
And the car is not just your average run-of-the-mill limo but chock full of fancy gadgets including rididculously expensive bullet-proof glass and other high-tech security features.
And the car is not Obama’s only tax-free perk. He is also given, in addition to his handsome salary, a $50,000 budget for….wait for it….PARTIES! That’s right, if he wants to welcome, say, Nicolas Sarkozy to the United States he can get the beer and chips and stuff FREE. At a time when many Americans have lost their jobs Obama is partying on your dime.
ABC News has also revealed this shocking truth: Obama has been given a HOUSE to live in TAX FREE while he is President. That’s right, just when people are losing their mortgages Obama is given this gigantic perk and guess what he pays on it monthly: nothing! Nada!
As you can see, it’s not some fix-er-upper either. It’s got a ton of rooms and comes with another tax-free perk: free staff.
Really, as if this weren’t enough, ABC informs us that Obama also gets to use, at taxpayer expense, a huge free airplane. He flies first class or coach or anywhere he wants to sit because the whole plane is his to use tax-free. There’s more too but you’ll have to read the full exclusive story for that.
ABCNews.com is also letting us know, in their top story, that on the stimulus bill “Obama lost” even though they say it will pass.
Just when we thought traditional media was dying ABC News comes along with these gems to prove they’ve still got it.

Hilda Solis’ who was an illegal alien, of course they cheated us / IRS for 16 years.

Is anyone really suprised? The honeymoon is over for Obama and he’s seeing the other face of the media that deified him.
As soon as he starts keeping cigars and interns in the oval office the transition will be complete. Obama is the liberal Voltron! Except it forms a giant Teddy Kennedy swilling scotch and driving off bridges.

Any and all government employees and civil servants, elected, or appointed need to have a clean tax record. I suggest that everyone receiving compensation through the Office of Personnel Management have their tax returns reviewed for the last 5 years. Anyone appointed or elected that owes back taxes should resign.

JW; Yes there have been many Republican crooks exposed over the years. The difference is the Republicans estrange the crooks whereas the Democrats nominate them for cabinet positions. We’re still waiting for you to do the right thing, TIM. We can find another treasury secretary. There are only about three or four hundred million citizens who are cleaner than you.

Come on, Congress … pay up like the rest of us, or get out!

Give me a break, I have had tax problems like this and there isn’t anyone more American then me.
This is MEDIA BS, that is getting swept up by the NEOCONS. How about the NEOCONS go ask Cheney and Bush for some of the billions spent in Iraq that was supposed to be paid with their oil.
Instead Cheney, Halliburton, Bush, and his oil buddies all got richer.
Bush had the big wig at Enron run the energy dept. Cheney sat in a locked room with all the oil companies to come up with the energy policy and the NEOCONS and media want to bash this lady for a few k owed to the IRS. The fact is he paid his taxes just late like many many good redblooded Americans do every year.

I can imagine that there are A LOT of Americans who can feel some kinship with anyone having tax liens against their property – especially if the liens are well under the $10 thousand mark. People who owe twice or thrice in income taxes what most taxpayers earn in a year are another matter altogether! But a property tax lien settled for $6,400 is like a speeding ticket that you took in, plead extenuating circumstances, and got 40% of the fine knocked off: just plain “folks”. But something many Republicans would never understand at all.

How does a 16-year old tax lien of $6,400 on her husband’s business—which Solis was not a part of— constitute tax problems? That is absurd.
Maybe we should also check if her cousin didn’t pay parking tickets during college. I mean, apparently family records from over 15 years ago are relevant information huh?
Meanwhile, during the campaign it came out that Palin didn’t report her per diems as income. Actual money, as opposed to benefits, that she just decided she didn’t want to pay taxes on. And she never did! And stayed the nominee.

Obama doesm’t have a clue and I have said this before. Republicans also keep this country safe for 7 long years. We coud hope for as much but are fearful for the worst. You have to believe in something or you will fall for anything and unfortunately the Democrats believe in self and nothing else. $50 Million for an inauguration -
give it back before you start taking away from us. We can just not pay our taxes and say we forgot. What can the IRS do, after all, that is what the Treasury Secretary did.

And I repeat NO ONE is perfect. The current president has done illegal things (smoke weed and took coke); Clinton (smoked weed); British Prime Minister Tony Blair (smoked weed)…Dont they all belong in jail? Just like Phelps may end up there for having a pic taken of him smoking?
You are a hypocrite.

Posted by: Shamaedene | February 5, 2009, 8:13 pm 8:13 pm

Shamaedene- I think you are the one being naive, if you think people not paying taxes is not fraud. You do realize that we now have a criminal in charge of the IRS, don’t you? How am I a hypocrite? I think that smoking pot should have disqualified Obama & Clinton. I don’t care what Tony Blair did. He was England’s problem, not ours. Ted Kennedy should never have been allowed to become a Senator, since he is a murderer.

cwa–”Maybe instead of pointing fingers as a Democrats v. Republicans thing, we should instead be pointing fingers at Congress and the I.R.S. ” — heres a problme with that thinking.. the man Obama chose to head the IRS.. one of his tax problem appointiments… WROTE the current tax regs… so the guy who whote the tax laws don’t tay his taxes and we are suposed to believe that it is an honest mistake…please.. vultures wouldn’t touch this it smells so bad…

Jane-”$50 Million for an inauguration -
-” siorry but i have to correct you, $50 million was not spent on the Obama inauguration… $40 million plus was spent on the second Bush inaugural and everyone in the media roasted him.. talking about how many protective vests for our soldiers that would have bought…or how many vehicles could be armored, or tsunami victims could have been treated with it… The Obama inaugural cost $150 million and all the media could talk about was how great it was and how everyone who could attend should.. and dress to the nines.. and show their appreciation for the moment… nahh,,, the media isn’t biased… hoiw many of you think Bush would have got a pass if 4 of his cabinet nominees had tax problems? if his environmental Czar had been a member of a communist dominated board that promoted one world government? if his CIA chief had been a 1 mil a year lobbyist who sat on the board of a company that works directly for the CIA?
at least 40 prominent democrats made public statements between 1998 and 2001 about the dangers of Iraq and touted our need to take military action, yet ther are people who still want bush arrested for going… why is this guy getting a total pass on everything…?

Posted by: arkie vet | February 6, 2009, 12:49 am 12:49 am

Look. If the guy owed some taxes so what? Its not her. Its her husband.
My problem with this one is they have been married all these years and hes owed taxes for 16 years. The problem is the fact there is no way she didnt know about it and she herself with her big salary all these years couldnt take care of it?
She didnt care about it either. I dont confirm her nomination and in fact, I get Geigner to step down too.

Posted by: infoseeking | February 6, 2009, 2:13 am 2:13 am

Let me also add, if its ‘not a biggie’ then why did they all of a sudden PAY IT now after all these years ?

Posted by: infoseeking | February 6, 2009, 2:16 am 2:16 am

You people are nit-pickin for the wrong reasons. Doesn’t anybody else but me find it disturbing that the very people running our country have ignored their own tax responsibilities? I don’t hold Mr. Obama accountable…I hold those responsible who have been blatantly defrauding the IRS and the American taxpayers far too long and up to now, have gotten away with it. I can bet that if everyone else on The Hill were investigated, they’d find the majority guilty of personal “oversights” and som form of questionable practices. He has my sympathy for trying to deal with so much on his plate from day one. He can’t do it alone, particularly with so many corrupt elected officials in Congress. The big question is, how did we allow our government to become such an obvious embarrassment to the citizens they’re supposed to serve?

Posted by: minutemanII | February 6, 2009, 7:17 am 7:17 am

Okay, I guess it’s gonna take a tax audit of the entire administration to get the doubt under control. Let’s get on with it!

Posted by: N'erdowell | February 6, 2009, 9:13 am 9:13 am

Obama has surrounded himself with criminals…Chicago style..you fools who voted for him, I hope you all suffer to the MAX

Posted by: 8mile | February 6, 2009, 11:59 am 11:59 am

Obama is immature, arrogant and based on his recent cabinet appointments, “Tax Gate,” clueless. This fake stimulus package will be another “I screwed up” disaster for Obama.

So Solis is guilty by association because her husband owes back taxes? Guess that would make Palin guilty by association of wanting Alaska to secede from the USA, right?

Posted by: SearamblerOne | February 6, 2009, 1:27 pm 1:27 pm

texas outlaw..”Get over it NEOCONS, it will be 8yrs of hell for you. It will take the Dems that long to build a surplus in the budget for the next Repbulican to blow out their blowholes.”– you know, your are about the third or forth person i’ve sen on here talk about the “surplus” that was left to Bush.. IS this the latest effort to rewrite history for Clinton? Newsflash.. THERE WAS NO SURPLUS WHEN BUSH TOOK OFFICE.. The national debt INCREASED under Clinton… it was 5.1 trillion when Bush took office…If clinton was so good, then why do you libs have to make up stuff to make him better than he was?

Posted by: arkie vet | February 6, 2009, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm

Searamblerone–”So Solis is guilty by association because her husband owes back taxes?” — actually, its not guilt by association.. If you are legally married, (especially if you file jointly) then tax burdens and tax garnishments are communal.. if they shared a tax form ( or filed “married filing separately” for that matter) She is equally liable for any wrongdoing under the eyes of the law..

Solis is a naked Marxist. Check her resume. She does not hide it.
Impeach Obama now before things get any worse than they already are.
PORK, PORK, PORK – Obama’s new mantra
PORK FOR ALL
Free TV converter boxes to all.
Obama is KING! All hail Obama!

The IRS are a bunch of bullies first of all make sure that is what they really owe. My mom filed taxes she is 82 years old and they sent her the wrong form when she realized this she asked them to send her the proper forms to fix the error. They harrases her for a good 2 years and then they went into her bank account and took the money. Eventually it was all fixed and they returned the money they took but the left hand doesnt’ know what the right hand is doing at the IRS lets hope OBAMA can also get the IRS to act like human beings again. In Canada the government isn’t allowed to go into your bank account. They let politicians get away with murder but it’s alright for the IRS to harrass and 82 year old woman. SHAME ON YOU IRS. We should have someone watching the IRS they are crooked to. RJ

Post by USA your an idiot first of all you probably can afford a converter box I don’t begrudge having money set aside for those that are to poor to convert there TV’s it’s the government that has decided to convert so why not help those that the only entertainment they get is TV or would you rather the kids get in trouble and rob your house think about it. Stop being so selfish and give OBAMA a chance for crying out loud you can BUSH a chance and look were it got us. OBAMA hasn’ even been in office for 3 weeks and your already bitching you must be a republican unless a republican is in office you have to find fault at every corner. RJ

Well I now see what the Dems are so hot to raise taxes on everyone. They don’t pay theirs and then get appointed for high levels jobs. So I guess if you don’t pay your taxes you don’t care if

Posted by: Bob | February 6, 2009, 4:17 pm 4:17 pm

My, My there are some angry folks out there. Well I guess I get that way some times. But here’s the deal…calling a person a “tax cheat” or what ever is stupid…Why stupid you ask? The #1″statute of limitations” never runs out on taxes #2 the tax code, it’s very, very, very complicated.
My ex is a CPA, Attorney and now IRS. An there are still areas of confusion When we do my taxes on a 46K teaching salary.
If you are employed by a single employer, you get your W2 and it shows what you paid vs what you owe. If on the other hand you are self employed and get revenue for multiple sources it can be difficult to know everything. I bet if we looked at all Republicans and Democrats in office many would have issues that have derailed Sen. Dashal.
Does every mistake mean dishohesty, only if there is a pattern.
T. Delay(R) – pattern
W. Jefferson(D) – pattern
Many of us at one time or another have had to file amended tax returns. That does not make us dishonest.
The Tax code must be simplified and it must be fair. Rich should pay a slightly higher rate than non rich because they enjoy a greater piece of the American dream and police and fire fighters usually show up at their houses more quickly than the rest of us. Income tax has never turned a rich man into a poor man….But for Bush to say we are all the same IS Stupid. gOOD RIDDANCE.

This is silly. It wasn’t even something that SHE did! The only reason the Republicans don’t like her is because she is actually on the side of workers. So now they are in “Destroy” mode.

Posted by: jock59801 | February 6, 2009, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm

It would seem we are all living wrong. We could all be government bigwigs if ONLY WE DIDN’T pay our taxes!
Why hasn’t the size of the senate and house of representative been downsized? With so many loosing their jobs, it’s time some of these buffoons find out what’s like to be poor and unemployed.
If only these politicians could remember from one day to the next, that it wasn’t the lobbyist who voted them into office; it was common folk like us.

Posted by: fedupwithpoliticans | February 6, 2009, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

This was the husband’s problem not hers and considering the relatively small amount that was owed there may well be much more to it than appears. I had no patience for Daschle and his limo oversight but things like this happen in small business and maybe Mr.whatever his name is has been fighting with the IRS for years. A lot of people do.
The Republicans are going to be after her, however, because she is actually a labor appointee that is for labor. Unusual. That is like having a Human REsources director that cares about the humans. A rare occurance.
Since it is the head Republicans #1 mission to break all unions and keep more from growing Solis is high on the list of people they will scream and wail over. She would be pro-working person including labor movements.

My only concern is that this woman is a big supporter of LaRacist (LaRaza). How can she clean up or beef up the unions and at the same time condone jobs being given to immigrants both legal and illegal at a substandard wage. Just more political posturing on the part of this corrupt president in a veiled attempt to bolster support for the democratic party in 2012. Won’t work Obama. You have proved to be what we on the other side of the aisle knew all the time, a WORTHLESS POTUS wannabe!

Hey now, Hussein ran an honest campaign. He told us we would only be left with change and hope. Pocket change and hope for a better life in Mexico. He wants the wall to be finished, but only to help keep us IN. He will probably install doors like in lobster traps to allow people in from the Mexican side. Tax cheats, liars, traitors to not only American ideals and freedom, but to our safety.

The MO of this administration must one of two things:
1.) Be so imcompetant that you can’t properly investigate someone’s backgruond.
2.) Just not care because he won and he gets to do whatever the f#@? he wants to.
Either way, the American people lose and we are left with the tax bill because I gaurantee the IRS would not be as forgiving to us see that none of us are in the “inner sanctum”

This is an incredibly misleading headline. Hilda Solis does not have tax problems. Of course, “Nominee’s Husband’s Business, With Which She’s Not Affiliated, Has Minor Tax Issues” won’t draw as many eyeballs, so ABC News has to do what’s best for their own bottom line. The truth? Not relevant.
