The Note, 2/6/09: Buying Partisanship — Will Obama continue partisan push — or embrace the center?
By RICK KLEIN Is partisanship the cure for post-partisanship? Or will President Obama seek to own the only real bipartisan work that’s going on in Washington these days — even if it isn’t happening under his roof? In this week where the president has lost so much — some credibility, some control, some claims to the high ground — he seemed to acknowledge by Thursday that the only way he might end up with the win he needs is with a return to partisanship, in words and in votes. That’s why Obama’s rhetoric suggests a return to the campaign — citing election results as a mandate, and insisting that the ideas he’s pushing with Democrats in Congress are the ones that will work. “Using language he used against his Republican opponent in the general election campaign, a fired-up President Obama came to the Department of Energy Thursday to assail critics of his stimulus package as pushing ‘worn out ideas’ that not only lead to ‘bickering’ at a time of economic peril but are the very ideas that helped cause the recession to begin with,” per ABC’s Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller. But it doesn’t have to be this way, and Team Obama knows it. While the president looks in vain for Republican votes, the center is holding in the Senate. It may not produce precisely the measure Obama wants, and embracing the Senate efforts risks angering the left. But it’s hard to hate the process (and that was always going to be a major part of the message under Obama’s plan). Does Obama own the work of the latest Senate “gang”? “Along the way, the quest for changes in the stimulus package just might have brought together a group of men and women who could form a durable centrist bloc to hold sway in the era of Obama,” Gerald Seib writes in his Wall Street Journal column. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb.: “There isn’t any other way to get something that’s bipartisan unless you’re working to achieve it. It doesn’t happen on it’s own around here,” he tells Time’s Jay Newton-Small. “In the first major episode of his administration, the stimulus package, the conventional policies so far have won,” David Brooks writes in his New York Times column. “Barack Obama is not initiating events (he’s had surprisingly little influence on the stimulus bills’ evolution). But circumstances now present him with a precedent-setting moment of decision. Does he embrace the Gang System and try to use it to create a new style of politics? Or does he remain an orthodox Democrat, deferring to the Old Bulls on legislation, enforcing party discipline and trying to pick off a Republican or two here and there to pass laws?” Time to make a statement: “Congressional Democrats are understandably anxious to put into place those programs and priorities that got nowhere while Democrats chafed under Republican rule,” Charlie Cook writes in his National Journal column. “For that very reason, the Obama White House must begin sending in the plays, or it risks having Hill quarterbacks call their own in ways that run counter to the president’s game plan and have much less likelihood of success.” The “gang” has a deadline: “Key Democratic moderates said late Thursday that they were close to a deal that would win support from a small group of GOP centrists and perhaps give the package enough votes to pass,” CQ’s Joseph J. Schatz and David Clarke report. (And Obama’s support of a bill in the $800 billion range is being cast as a boost to the efforts.) And yet: “The fate of Obama’s stimulus plan, designed to stem the nation’s recession by saving more than 3 million jobs, remains unclear. Despite the president’s personal lobbying campaign, the number of Republicans committed to working in the bipartisan group appeared to be shrinking as the day went on, leaving congressional Democrats a few votes shy of the 60 they need,” Paul Kane and Shailagh Murray report in The Washington Post. tedAn argument for embracing the Senate efforts (if he has a choice): “Obama’s personal and political prestige are on the line because he has been deeply involved in lobbying reluctant senators and trying to reach out to Republicans,” Janet Hook writes in the Los Angeles Times. “All week, debate in the Senate has featured an oasis of bipartisanship in the group of centrists headed by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.).” “If [the moderates] reach that agreement, you will see the bill pass with bipartisan support sometime later today,” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos reported on “Good Morning America” Friday. “If not, we are going to be in for much more pitched battles.” New jobs numbers out Friday morning will become the latest data point in the argument. Plus, a fresh White House announcement, per ABC’s Jake Tapper and Karen Travers: “President Obama will name the members of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board and outline its mission on Friday at the White House. Former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker will serve as the chairman of the board. Obama economic adviser Austan Goolsbee will serve as staff director and chief economist and act as the primary liaison between the board and the Obama Administration.” He (re)starts from a stalled position: “It is an early reminder that there are limits to presidential power, even for a charismatic new chief executive who is immensely popular with the American people,” Michael D. Shear writes in The Washington Post. “Despite a week of back-slapping, friendly phone calls, stage-managed events and the rare visit with Republicans on Capitol Hill, Obama failed to persuade a single GOP House member to vote for his stimulus plan. But Obama advisers say they believe the personal salesmanship will pay dividends later on as the president builds lasting relationships with lawmakers who are his adversaries.” The partisan option may not be much of an option at all: “The majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, said he believed that Democrats could muscle the stimulus bill through with at least two Republican votes. But late Thursday he said he would give the bipartisan group until Friday to reach a deal. If no deal is reached, he said he would call for procedural vote on Sunday aimed at moving to final vote,” David M. Herszenhorn writes in The New York Times. “The efforts of the bipartisan group, which at one point numbered about 20 senators, essentially tied Mr. Reid’s hands, giving him little choice but to allow time for a compromise measure to emerge.” “The show horses — including the leadership of both parties — gave speeches on the Senate floor and news conferences either to trade blame for partisan deadlock or to denounce the Group of 18′s dealmaking efforts,” Dana Milbank writes. “The workhorses, taking a lunch break so some of them could confer with the White House about the compromise, were pleased with their labors.” Not good postscripts: “Has bipartisanship been a failure? Well, so far it’s not working,” Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., tells USA Today’s John Fritze and Richard Wolf. “If this is the new way of doing businesses, if this is the change we all can believe in, America’s best days are behind her,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Is this how the president wants to win? “Obama kept up the pressure all day, firing increasingly tough broadsides,” Ken Bazinet and Michael McAuliff write in the New York Daily News. “Late in the day, he mocked critics who say the bill has too much spending. ‘What do you think stimulus is?’ an irritated Obama told a gathering of House Democrats. ‘That’s the point.’ “ “Mr. Obama’s recent courtship of Republicans gave way to blunt derision of their ideas for the stimulus, as he tried to raise the political pressure to pass a measure with a price tag of over $900 billion in the Senate,” Jonathan Weisman and Naftali Bendavid write in The Wall Street Journal. “Seeking to regain the momentum on economic policy, Mr. Obama on Friday is expected to announce the members of his newly formed Economic Recovery Advisory Board, led by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.” “As he monitored the Senate’s activity, President Obama began talking in explicitly ideological terms about legislation for which he once had hopes of winning broad bipartisan support,” Sasha Issenberg writes in The Boston Globe. “In a campaign-style speech at a Democratic congressional retreat in Virginia last night, Obama dismissed Republican critics – who have sought more tax cuts and fewer public investments – as defenders of a ‘losing formula.’ “ “Gone was the conciliatory rhetoric and gentle wooing of the GOP,” Politico’s Jonathan Martin writes. “Instead appeared a president sounding like the candidate he was a few months ago, passionately and unmistakably chastising Republicans and reminding Americans of the policies they so soundly rejected on Election Day.” “Barring some agreement, the Appropriations leadership is preparing to step in with its own smaller package of targeted cuts in the range of $50 billion to strengthen support,” David Rogers writes for Politico. “And Reid warned if there is more ‘spinning wheels’ he will force a cloture vote Sunday on cutting off debate.” Groundwork, with the House: “In preparing the House to accept a final bill that may end up far different than the one they passed — and that Democratic leaders have forcefully defended — Obama called on Democrats to ‘not let the perfect be the enemy of the absolutely necessary,’ ” The Hill’s Jared Allen writes. Not a great takeaway: “More damaging to Obama’s image than all the hypocrisies in the appointment process is his signature bill: the stimulus package,” columnist Charles Krauthammer writes. “He inexplicably delegated the writing to Nancy Pelosi and the barons of the House. The product, which inevitably carries Obama’s name, was not just bad, not just flawed, but a legislative abomination.” Hardly a time for trust in government: “U.S. taxpayers are being shortchanged by about $78 billion through the Treasury Department’s bank bailout, the panel overseeing the program said,” Bloomberg’s Mark Pittman and Bob Ivry write. “The Treasury, when it was headed by Secretary Henry Paulson, received bank assets worth about $176 billion in exchange for capital purchases of $254 billion under the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Congressional Oversight Panel said in a report today.” Friday at the White House: “As President Obama prepared to order the Department of Defense’s Military Commission to withdraw charges against terrorist suspect Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri on Friday afternoon, the convening authority for the Commission, Susan Crawford, withdrew the charges on her own Thursday night,” per ABC’s Jake Tapper. “The original plan was for the announcement not to be made until after President Obama meets with the families of victims of terrorist attacks on 9/11 and on the U.S.S. Cole Friday afternoon, where he will assure them that this step was not done to be lenient towards al-Nashiri,” Tapper reports. “The move is being done to stop the continued prosecution of al-Nashiri in a court system that his administration may ultimately find illegitimate, not for any other reason, sources told ABC News.” “The White House extended invitations to family members of both attacks, aides said, so the president could listen to them in a private session and explain his decision to close the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba,” per The New York Times’ Jeff Zeleny. “Among those scheduled to meet with the president is the former commander of the Cole, retired Navy Cmdr. Kirk Lippold, who’s been sharply critical of Obama for ordering Guantanamo closed and a delay in the prosecutions of alleged terrorists held there. Seventeen U.S. sailors were killed in the attack on the Cole,” the Miami Herald’s Carol Ronenberg writes. Vice President Joe Biden gets to be in his element: “The Obama administration is expected to ditch the go-it-alone foreign policy legacy of the Bush years tomorrow when the new vice-president, Joe Biden, delivers the first big speech on global security of the Democratic White House,” The Guardian’s Ian Traynor writes. “Making its debut in Europe, a high-powered team from the new administration is to attend the annual security conference at a five-star hotel in Munich, sparking excitement in European capitals at the prospect of a radical new departure in US foreign policy.” “Speculation is rife that Biden could deliver a bombshell – offering an end to 30 years of estrangement with Iran, shelving the Pentagon’s contentious missile shield plans in Poland and the Czech Republic, or inviting the Kremlin to embark on a new era of nuclear arms control,” Traynor writes. Per the AP’s Lolita C. Baldor: “Vice President Joe Biden will be tested on two fronts this weekend during the first foreign trip by a top Obama administration official. Can he provide any insight into the White House’s emerging strategy on Afghanistan and persuade allies to step up their assistance in that country and across the troubled Middle East? Can he curb his trademark bluntness as he strides onto the international stage in a new role and under the scrutiny of a curious world?” Can the Obama administration afford any more tax questions? “The confirmation of another Cabinet member stalled Thursday because of unpaid taxes after USA TODAY disclosed that the husband of Labor secretary nominee Hilda Solis paid about $6,400 this week to settle numerous tax liens against his business dating to 1993,” USA Today’s Matt Kelley reports. “Solis and her husband, Sam Sayyad, were unaware of liens against his auto repair shop until USA TODAY asked about them Tuesday, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said Thursday. Vietor said Sayyad went to the Los Angeles County tax office and paid what he was told he owed — about $6,400 — to settle outstanding liens.” “Solis, a California Democrat, has already had her nomination delayed while Republicans examine her support for union legislative goals such as the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier to unionize. Labor leaders today said it was important that the Senate confirm her nomination,” Bloomberg’s Holly Rosenkrantz writes. (Look for Solis’ backers in labor and beyond to turn up the heat on lawmakers to confirm her promptly — with e-mails, letters, and possibly ads.) A grasp for control: “Now, amid a series of embarrassing personnel stumbles that have bogged down the administration’s attempt to move swiftly to its legislative agenda, [Greg] Craig is assuming control of the vetting process for nominees,” The Washington Post’s Anne Kornblut reports. “That portfolio includes helping shepherd the next choice for secretary of health and human services, who will replace former senator Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.) after his decision to step aside because of tax problems, and making sure the nomination of Rep. Hilda L. Solis (D-Calif.) as labor secretary does not fall victim to the same fate after tax liens against her husband’s business were revealed yesterday.” Key questions unanswered on the new faith-based office: “In launching his White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships today, President Barack Obama signaled that he would erect a higher barrier between church and state than George W. Bush did with his faith-based office. But Obama postponed a decision on the most contentious issue surrounding the office: whether to allow religious groups to hire on the basis of religion for federally funded positions, as Bush did,” Dan Gilgoff writes for US News & World Report. Movement on stem cells: “President Obama on Thursday gave lawmakers his ‘guarantee’ he will sign an executive order overturning President Bush’s embryonic stem cell research policy,” Stephen Dinan reports in the Washington Times. “Meeting with House Democrats holding a retreat here, Mr. Obama answered a question from Rep. James R. Langevin, a Rhode Island Democrat who is a paraplegic, by saying he will sign the order, according to three sources who were in the closed-door part of the meeting.” Howard Dean for HHS? Count Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, (himself a contender) among the supporters: “He brings all the background and experience. He’s very strong on prevention and wellness, which I’m very strong on. I think he’d make an outstanding secretary of HHS,” Harkin tells Huffington Post. Checking in on Minnesota: “Perry Mason, meet Rachel Smith. Smith, the top elections official in Anoka County, dropped a minor bombshell Thursday in the courtroom where a lawsuit over Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race was being heard. She testified that the county has found — within the prior 24 hours — a dozen or more ballots that were never counted in the statewide recount that ended last month,” Jason Hoppin reports in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Kicker: “What do you think about this spiffy ride?” — President Obama, surprising reporters by appearing in the press cabin aboard Air Force One. Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Come on now let’s do some honest reporting here. It is the GOP who is being partisan.
Obama has consistently demanded that congress work on this bill, and the GOP has made it known that they see success as the failure of the Obama Administration.
ABC has let us know that it thinks that Bipartisanship consists of total capitulation to the GOP.
Well Obama is correct, he was elected, and those of us who elected him expect certain out comes, and what you and the GOP can not understand is that the Government is a representitive government.

The problem is, this is the same thing that Congress has been calling bi-partisan for the last decade. The party with the most votes works to bully the other party to agree with their ideas, tossing a few bones to get votes.
True bipartisanship is about compromise and working together. This bill is being rushed in such a way that true bipartisan negotiation is being made impossible. I think part of the problem is that people have gotten to used to, and too comfortable with, all the constant bickering and don’t even know how to do anything else anymore. Thus why having Congress members who serve virtually for life, bad habits and all, is not really a good idea.
The change we can all believe in is turning out to be very small change indeed.

If this “stimulus” passed today. The people won’t get relief for one to two years. This bill is Obama’s payback to people and companies that gave him money during the campaign.Americans have lived off credit for years. Our motto has been buy now pay later. now the bill has come due and we can’t pay. The government is spending money we just don’t have. The bill will come due and we all will have to pay for years to come. NO STIMULUS

I still can’t figure out what stds and condoms have to do with creating jobs? This bill isn’t a stimulus bill. It’s a let’s have fun on the way down bill.

I voted for Obama but I wanted to see another plan to help the economy. We are broke and living on borrowed money . I think Obama and his team should wait a few months to come up with a new plan not just a stimulus plan. His team should focus on putting Americans back to work by strenghtening existing businesses (not bailout money) and creating new ones and cut spending. Spend money on that not just send a check. We need a NEW PLAN not the same old thing.

Obama thinks he is a king. This is not what America voted for, America voted for a functioning centrist govt., not a wild left wing agenda. Obama’s inexperience and niaveity is showing america is going to pay a huge price for it.

Hey Thinking,
I agree that ABC is very biased and believes that Obama needs to kiss GOP’s hand no matter what. Like the President does or should not have a brain or opinions of his own. He IS the President.
The GOP had their chance with 8 years of failed policies. The GOP put us in this situation, running the budget into the ground. So now they just need to take a backseat and enjoy the ride because their is a new captain who was ordained by the people.

I will say this: I can hardly wait for the next election. Obviously, Reps still just don’t get it. Well, one more election and they just may be the “historical” party… sorta like the Wigs. I am especially waiting for the demise of Burr whose only interest is lining his pockets and voting against anything Democratic. He should talk to Lizzy Dole to see what awaits him…

After listening to his speech on CNN and hearing his DEMANDS I feel as if he is a dictator. How you can pass a $800B package that has now turned to $900B in two weeks is absurd. There is no way to just read 1400 pages in two weeks and say it is ok. This is MY MONEY which by the way is dwindling daily because of our government ran PONZI scheme. Taking our money to make government rich not the American people. Just people at the top. By the way who is paying for Pelosi’s plane? Us.

This bill is for Obama to pay back all of his buddies that helped get him elected. It is 8 years of earmarks the dems didn’t get. There is nothing in this bill that will create jobs! If this bill passes our children’s grandchildren will still be paying for this! Obama and them dems are only out for themselves.

GoObama This is not bias reporting it is the truth and I guess you cannot deal with the fact that Obama is screwing up.
Posted by: billy bob | February 6, 2009, 9:03 am 9:03 am
GoObama…what did you do just repeat his speech. Obama is so far off on this and is now showing his lack of experience.
Posted by: cc | February 6, 2009, 9:05 am 9:05 am
It seems funny to me that it was okay for the Reps to run up a trillion in debt for the stupid, senseless war in Iraq, but now, with our very future at risk, Obama is having difficulty with the same Reps. Amazing.
Basic economics states that government must spend to bring us out of recession and save when the economy is good. Too bad Bush chose to blow it all when he should have been saving it.
Reps just don’t get it…

Give me a bleading break! Obama has been in office for two weeks and he’s to blame for our current economic problems, if I’m getting the correct thrust here? As I read today, Obama has to stand up to the Republicans who take their marching orders from the likes of Rush Limbaugh. He is doing that and I say it’s about time!
You go Obama! I’ll be behind you every step of the way, as will @ 1 million of my fellow citizens I suspect.

gobama; You just said abc is bias? You are right but not in the direction you thinking. They were in the tank for BO from the start and now they have buyers remorse.

Everyone on this blog, does exactly what the goverment is doing……
If we are doing it, what ever do you expect from our President and our goverment?
No one really has any ideas what to do about this mess. But the only thing we do have is what FDR did. It worked then. Everything that the Republicans have done in the past decade, just made it worse. Can’t we get past all of this crap and do what our President with all of his council have come up with. How could it get much worse?
I am out of work for the first time in my life. All I could get is Christmas work. Guess what, after Christmas and before New Years, I was back out of work again. My 21-year-old daughter walked out of her Lowe’s job a couple of days ago. They are re-arranging everything because of the economy and she is getting the short end of the stick. She is losing her office job with company afte working there 3 years, she is being demoted to watering the outside plants this Summer. I begged her to eat-crow and go back. What kind of crap is that?
I hope all of you Obama-haters have good jobs. Good Luck with that. Do YOU feel secure? I raised my four children working 18 hour days doing daycare, landscaping, doing alterations, delivering newspapers, any grunt job you could think of. I am 52 years-old and I am TIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am tired of the fighting and bickering between all of you MORONS! I mean democrats and republicans. NO one wants the president to be successful. They just want to be (themselves) RIGHT!
GROW-UP!

Well, here’s a nice episode in short-sighted reporting. The Note is so focused on what happened this week it can’t reckon with what happened last week. Like the man said, Obama went to the House, back-slapped and caucused with House Republicans, and they reciprocated with . . . not a single vote. Republicans held ranks in perfect lock-step last week, President Obama has the temerity to say so, the partisanship is all his, and with it goes credibility, control, and claims to the high ground. Or so says The Note. There are moments when Washington journalism is as short-sighted as the people it covers. Luckily for both parties in this case, the House Republicans left after this election are in safe seats and free to ignore elections, and the Washington journalists aren’t subject to elections. Nice work if you can get it.

Make that a million and one Ginette43. Obama is doing what is necessary to get us out of this mess. Why weren’t these experts raising hell when Bush was running up a trillion dollars in debt? Where were they then?
Obama is on the right track. All you need to do is read a little history to see how we got out of the last great depression.

If you are unemployed or about to be unemployed, don’t count on the GOP. They are going to leave you swinging in the wind. All they want is huge tax cuts for rich corporations with overpaid CEOs who have already gotten billions in bonuses and golden parachutes.

Scents of Roses: I’m sorry about your situation. There are a lot of people like you out there right now. I think this is just a source of venting. It’s also the closest thing to the outside world, mainly our govt hearing us, which most of us realize they dont. AEK It is amazing how short of a memory you have or is it selective? The dems in the house did not include one republican in drafting this bill. It was here it is, take it or leave it.
Posted by: billy bob | February 6, 2009, 9:18 am 9:18 am
All Obama has to do is come out and give the mandate “No pork in this bill” and it would be cut dramatically. I think the American people and the Congress would get more solidly behind it in that case. Cut the crap from it. This isn’t an opportunity for representatives and senators denied money in the past to get it now.
@ Thinking – “Come on now let’s do some honest reporting here. It is the GOP who is being partisan.”
Partisanship is one of the bases of our system. I fully support partisanship. Keeps the conversation from being one sided, regardless of who’s correct. Once we stop arguing about these things, we lose our ability to think critically. It’s just unfortunate that our elected officials continue to act in a way representative of my son’s day care classroom.

Does anyone know what a ‘carbon-capture demonstration project’ is? Neither do I but the Stimulus Bill has $2.4 billion earmarked for it. That’s $2.4 billion with a ‘B’ that could be used for infrastructure before another bridge falls.
$400 million for global warming research which could be used for alternative fuels to combat global warming and lower our fuel costs.
$335 million for education related to sexually transmitted diseases. Why not for education that will help unemployed Americans get back to work?
$650 million to help people switch to digital TV. That could help build a dam for water and power generation instead.
$400 million for the Social Security Administration’s new computer center. That’s not for benefits, it for administration. $70 million for programs to help people quit smoking, $150 million for the Smithsonian Institute. The list goes on.
If we are going to pass the largest spending bill in history shouldn’t we actually get something for our money? How about roads and bridges, border security, education, renewable energy and the thousands of things we actually need. Giving money to GM won’t put Americans to work, buying cars and trucks to patrol the border will, but only if we buy cars and trucks that are actually made in the US.
A large part of this bill will not stimulate the economy or give us our money’s worth. It’s pure pork with heavy lard.

If Obama throat crams this porked up hot mess of a stimulus bill down the throats of the American public, he will not only be a one term president, he will be facing a major backlash on his party in the midterm elections. Passing legislation with porked-up pet projects during times when people are suffering is not only perceived as poor judgement, it is viewed as criminal!! Call and email your reps today and tell them we want this bill stripped to housing relief, infrastructure and tax cuts ONLY!! What we can’t afford is more big gov’t inefficiency – they can’t even keep our food supply safe, do you really want them running our banks and corporations!! Look at the inept SEC!!This is robbery people!! WAKE UP!!
Posted by: fairpolitics2009 | February 6, 2009, 9:21 am 9:21 am
Any reason why we can’t have a 3-4% interest rate for all who have good to excellent credit rating would give the economy the BIG BANG stimulus. Picture millions of homeowners refinancing at that rate and what kind of spending that would generate.
Picture millions of people being motivated and able to purchase homes. All this would stop the housing market from sliding further, bring more money into the economy, hence more jobs.
All this without any additional government spending. It would even help some people facing foreclosure, since their home value may go back up.
If we, the people that are still paying our bills and are holding up the economy do not get help soon, we also will go down and that would be a “Greatest Depression”

Democrats never seem to be able to stand up and defend their ideals with the same passion Republicans do theirs. Good Obama is now standing up for what he promised.. “Man may be a little lower than angels” (Judge Leaned Hand), but he can aspire to be principled and honest. That has been the beauty and power of Obama’s campaign! As Wilheim Liebknecht emphasized: “Principle is indivisible. It is either wholly kept or wholly sacrificed. The slightest concession on matters of principle infers the abandonment of principle.” Principle had seemed to be the very essence of Obama’s appeal, campaign and power? Yet Republicans have become emboldened. They sound and shout (“tax cut” “tax cut”) as if their ideals triumphed in the last election–egged on by their enablers in the corporate media. “What experience and history teach us is that people and government never have leaned anything from it,” bemoaned Georg Wilheim Hegel. What Obama presented us during his great campaign was a reason to hope again and a program of change. As Mazzini informed us about the success of a program of change, “its development must be confined to men who are believers in it, and emancipated from every tie or connection with any principle of an opposite nature.” Where are Democrats defending their own ideals and rejecting resoundingly Bush economics? Obama’s idea of bipartisanship is good; but it must not be tantamount to rolling over and abandoning principle!

AEK: If there are terrorists as the result of Bush’s invasion of Iraq, they were the biproduct of that invasion. There were no terrorist strongholds in Iraq, no matter how many time Cheney said there was. Iraq was a major mistake: a stupid, senseless war, just like Vietnam. If Bush had a brain, we would have settled Afghanistan, killed BinLaden and never, NEVER even thought of invading Iraq.

Great speech Obama. The republicans have resisted bi-partisanship since day one. They have made it known they will not help you loud and clear. The people are not stupid and can see it. This is not your mess it is their mess. For 8 years they did nothing to stop this economis crisis. It did not happen last year, it was going on for several years. NOW, they have all the ideas and the right ones. What a joke. They addmit they do not want you to succeed but you will in spite of them. They have joined the pill popping loud mouth Rush and that tells me what kind of people they really are. I call them all really bad losers.

And all they do is stand around and Bash the Bill.Once again Republicans put Party before Country.

How is $75 million for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration super computer going to put you back to work if it isn’t built in the US.
Unless you’re a ballet dancer that $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts isn’t going to help you much.
Write to your Congressman and Senators and tell them to cut the useless pork and spend the money on things that will benefit our country and put Americans back to work.

I fail to see how attacking is productive. I f he wants the stimulus bill passed so badly with bipartisan support, then why doesn’t he draft it instead od Pelosi?
I don’t get it. It’s still the same blame game.
A word of advice to the Obama administration, you may want to stop with the overexposure. He needs to speak when there is something that is newsworthy. It just feels like he has built a propaganda machine and that it his MO.
In addition, I applaud ANY politician who questions this bill becuase it is obviuos now that they fudged up the spending last on the previous bank bailout.
Furthermore, everyone I talk to is skeptical of this bill. Is Washington not listening.

We need to drop this pork bill and let America get back on our feet by ourselves! We can do it – I have every bit of faith that we will recover from this much faster without the “help” of all this PORK!!!

Last night I watched actual clips of the Senate discussion and it was nothing like what ABC is spinning. My Senator, Susan Collins, and the Nebraska Senator have Obama’s ear and progress is being made, no thanks to the GOP dinosauers.
This is the last day I am coming to the ABC website. Rick Klein and Jake Tapper are so obviously rightwing, I’m tired of weeding through their spin to try and understand the news. No wonder our country is in such a mess: the media can’t report the facts without adding a partisan spin. I guess we all have to choose which version of reality we get. I choose NBC. Bye.

My favorite being the two people yesterday copying and pasting a list that LED with $4 billion going to ACORN, which is a bald-faced lie. Don’t you all lose confidence in your sources when they do that? When you realize that they’ll LIE? Doesn’t that tell you that maybe that’s not a source that is trust-worthy?

‘Centrist’ Economic Recovery Package Disproportionately Cuts Programs For Women And Children»
Conservatives opposed to the Democratic economic recovery package have been voicing their complaints by calling out individual programs they believe to be wasteful. For example, last month on the House bill, conservatives specifically targeted funding for comprehensive family planning services and STD prevention. Unfortunately, in an effort to compromise, President Obama called for both of those provisions to be cut from the legislation.
Today, various progressive blogs released a list of items that so-called “centrist” Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ben Nelson (D-NE) have proposed cutting from the economic recovery package. Many of these cuts, however, would disproportionately affect women and children — similar to the cuts to the House bill. Some highlights:
– $150 million cut to the Violence Against Women Act
– $50 million to the Victims of Crime Act
– $25 million to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces
– $1.1 billion to Head Start
– $50 million to Teacher Quality Partnership Grants
– $5.2 billion for Prevention And Wellness (including diabetes screening and HIV testing)
– $13.9 billion for Pell Grants
– $2 billion for Child Care Development Block Grants
Over on the Wonk Room, Pat Garofalo notes why these cuts are so troubling:
For Nelson, who has a personal net worth about $10 million, this is also a case of kicking Main Street while its down, as the proposed cuts are in areas like health care, education, and aid to the states. Adding insult to injury, Collins and Nelson are nitpicking important stimulus funding that would benefit working Americans and their children, after they voted for giving $700 billion to Wall St. with no oversight.
In particular, health care provisions not only disproportionately boost women and children, but also minorities. After all, preventive health care spending is stimulative; it creates jobs and saves the country expensive long-term medical costs.
President Obama put it best today when he criticized all the people who are calling anything besides tax cuts “pork”: “So when you hear these attacks deriding something of such obvious importance as this, you have to ask yourself, ‘Are these folks serious?’”

A huge multi trillion dollar spending spree by the US Government should be able to most certainly to prop up the economy. President Obama is absolutely right. WE NEED A MULTI TRILLION DOLLAR SPENDING PROGRAM– MORE SPENDING THE BETTER.. Don’t buy into Republican nonsense! This is exactly what FDR has to go save our country! We need a multi Trillion Dollar spending package right away. These are terribly drastic times. We need drastic measures! What’s proposed rescue/stimulus isn’t big enough. Just this morning Paul Volker said so! We know this is very drastic…considering the colossal collapse republicans left behind! If we can find enough helicopters to fly around the country everywhere drop down bundles of cash it would be even better! I saw John McCain mouthing the same nonsense that George Bush did, for eight years. Tax cuts and more tax cuts for the rich! That how we got into this humongous collapse in the first place! Believe me Republicans are up to the same ignorant, partisan and dogmatic nonsense that turn America into a socialist country. But under the circumstances that Republicans left behind, we have no other choice. What we need right now is just like President Obama has proposed more spending! The more we can spend is better and we should as fast as we can and as vast quantities as possible! And only US Government is able to do that, because that Republicans have caused so much damage to our financial system by their poor, incompetent management. And that’s the only way possible to revitalize America. Pork or no pork, focused or unfocused, what we urgently need is more and huge amounts of government spending. All of that is needed to save our America from collapse after all the years of poor judgment and damage done to our country by the Republicans. Republicans are mouthing the same dogmatic stuff and trying to sound like fiscal conservatives, safeguarding interests of the people! Oh, my Lord, look who’s talking? All the damage done to our country over the past years, the same people are asking for same old stuff like tax cuts? I don’t understand what Republicans are all about. They are stuck in the same old worn out rut! All I know is their policies and ideas have ruined our country. After all the devastation done to America by the Republicans by their policies and their actions they are still mouthing the same spectacularly failed ideas! Boehner is saying the same stupid stuff like a trained Myna bird. We have tried all those Republican stuff and our country is not a Socialist state for all practical purposes. We know Republicans have ruined America. But Republican leaders like Kantor, Boehner, McCain, Kyle can’t help but to try selling the same snake oil to us Americans! We need government spending pork or no pork in huge amounts, to save our country from collapse!! America is now a socialist Republic thanks to our good old Republicans like John McCain. Remember those big investment banks, hedge funds? Where are they right now? Don’t you realize that America’s banking and financial system has completely collapsed? America is in dire straits─ don’t you still get it? John McCain sounded like an old broken record, with same old failed Republican solutions, which got us to this tragic situation in the first place! I am shocked by Republicans and some of their iignorance about America’s economic situation. You sounded as ignorant as John McCain! You have to learn more about America’s great depression and how we overcame it. President Obama is proposing to do is what FDR did to save our country for disintegration. I think she too is too small-minded to understand the scope of America’s economic crisis and what we should do to overcome it! We all should support our Presidents actions for America’s sake…! To John McCain I like to recommend you read and study what kind of advice that John M. Keynes gave President Roosevelt during the great depression. “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren” before you open your mouth to talk about the America’s economy!

It is my understanding that the Republicans aren’t needed to pass this bill so why is everyone attacking them now. If they are that inconsequential pass and be done with it.
This thought comes to mind:
Victory has many fathers but efeat is an orphan- JFK
If the Dems feel so strongly about it then pass it already and except and the glory or defeat. That is the gamble you take with thier careers and the American people. God help us all and my calm minds prevail.

Obama takes aim at his stimulus opponents: ‘You’re headed for a cliff.’»
Tonight, in an address before a House Democratic retreat, President Obama issued a strident defense of his economic recovery package:
We can’t embrace the losing formula that says only tax cuts will work for every problem we face; that ignores critical challenges like our addiction to foreign oil, or the soaring cost of health care, or falling schools and crumbling bridges and roads and levees. I don’t care whether you’re driving a hybrid or an SUV — if you’re headed for a cliff, you’ve got to change direction. That’s what the American people called for in November, and that’s what we intend to deliver.
Republicans — and even some Democrats — have mounted attacks on the economy recovery package with a variety of superfluous attacks. Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), for instance, said, “This was not a stimulus bill. It was a spending bill.” Obama fired back: “So then you get the argument, well, this is not a stimulus bill, this is a spending bill. What do you think a stimulus is? That’s the whole point. No, seriously. That’s the point.” (Watch the video here.)
UpdateSome other highlights from the speech:
– “I welcome this debate. But come on, we’re not — we are not going to get relief by turning back to the very same policies that for the last eight years doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin. ”
– “When you start hearing arguments on the cable chatter, just understand a couple of things. Number one, when they say, well, why are we spending $800 billion — we’ve got this huge deficit? First of all, I found this deficit when I showed up.”
– “Now, in fact, when we announced the bill, you remember — this is only about, what, two weeks ago? When we announced the framework — and we were complimented by Republicans, saying, boy, this is a balanced package, we’re pleasantly surprised. And suddenly, what was a balanced package needs to be put out of balance

Our president blasted the Senate Republicans for showing partisanship during his administration saying he had called for bipartisanship by reaching out to them for co-operation. I thought when he was asking for bi-partisanship during the campaign he was calling on his own party members to co-operate and indeed he may have been to some extent. Their interests are quite diverse and they have proven to be both vocal and impatient. But now we see to him bi-partisanship means whatever he says is the gospel and the law of the land. Debate is the essence of politics. Constructive debate leads to a mutually agreeable end. Nobody has all the answers so different ideas come to the table through debate and consideration of suggestions and ideas. Do we really want to lose that aspect of a representative government? Hang tight to your values, Senate Republicans. Don’t cave to his condescending rhetoric. Don’t let this legislation out of the Senate unless it serves the general population well, for now and for the future. This bill is a first draft of the Democratic Party’s wants. It may not contain the best overall plan for recovery.

This blogger (and that’s all this is, after all, a blog) doesn’t seem to be able to write a coherent piece – WHAT is your point? I think, if you’re trying to say that Obama is a ‘leftist’ – you’re really not looking too closely. The Republicans as a block will not budge on their “tax cuts only” stimulus. There’s got to be more. A tax cut is great if you’ve got money to save – if you’ve just lost your job and the bank wants to take back your house, saving $200 on your taxes is the least of your worries.

Yesterday’s tandrum by Obama shows just how thin skinned he is. It’s his way or no way. Did he forget that 46% or over 58 million people didn’t vote for his change. Recent polls show that well over 50% of Americans DO NOT WANT to spend 900 billion dollars, a good share of that money which is earmarks. Also keep in mind that the numbers against this stimulus package go up every day that people have a chance to read into it. He tells you “What bill this size doesn’t contain earmarks?”, and uses that as an excuse for the earmark filled stimulus package. Well if you tell me your doing what the people who elected you wants, didn’t we all want an end to “earmarks”? Didn’t we want an end to wastefull spending? Stop being a hipocrit and get the earmarks out of the package!

Democrat this and Republican that won’t do us any good. Look at what’s in the bill, then decide. Americans need to wake up and stop the bi-partisan bickering, we’ve had enough of that. Just because a bill is pushed by the Democrats doesn’t make it right and just because it’s opposed by Republicans doesn’t make it wrong.
Pres. Obama is asking Congress to rubber stamp the bill before any of them have had a chance to read it. It’s a large document. I don’t want my representatives to vote for or against anything if they don’t know what their voting for. We need to do something and we need to do it fast but we need to do the right things.
This is the largest spending bill in history, let’s don’t let it be the largest load of pork.

He wants to get this bill pushed through today because Monday an altogether different “economic stimulation” package, authored by our new tax evading Secretary of the Treasury, will be introduced. It is another monstrosity with a multi-billion dollar price tag. We’re seriously screwed.

Can you believe this? After all these years Republican ideology of small government, tax breaks for the rich, no regulations for business─ coming up with the perfect formula for self-destruction, the Republicans are at it again. Again, they are demanding the same after all the colossal devastation our country has ever experienced.
One day John McCain says that American people wants Democrats and Republicans to work together. Remember Lindsay Graham said so right after the President Obama’s inauguration. Then the next day they change their minds. In spite of all the devastation done to America by the Republicans by their narrow minded and provincial policies and their actions─ they are still mouthing the same spectacularly failed ideas! Boehner and McCain are saying the same stupid stuff that failed. There many on this blog who are equally stupid. We have tried all those Republican ideas of tax cuts and small government and no regulation dogma. We all know how what their mismanagement, incompetency and corruption did to America! Republicans have done more damage to our country all our foreign enemies combined. Today, thanks to Republicans like Kantor, Boehner, and McCain who supported Bush policies and practices we are practically a socialist country. We know Republicans have ruined America. But the Republicans can’t help but to try insisting on the selling the same snake oil to us Americans!

Just because barry is calling this a stimulus doesn’t mean that is what it is. Remember, barry is the same guy who said “i had no idea rev racist was saying those things for 20 years.”
Barry O’s “Stimulus”……
“$600 million for the gov’t to buy new cars.
$7billion to modernize federal buildings
$150million to the smithsonian
$252 billion for income-transfer payments (people get something for doing NOTHING)
$20 billion for food stamps
$81 billion for medicaid
$83 billion for the earned income credit for people who don’t pay income tax
$66 billion more for education
There’s $1 billion for Amtrak, the federal railroad that hasn’t turned a profit in 40 years; $2 billion for child-care subsidies; $50 million for that great engine of job creation, the National Endowment for the Arts; $400 million for global-warming research and another $2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects. There’s even $650 million on top of the billions already doled out to pay for digital TV conversion coupons.
In selling the plan, barry has said this bill will make “dramatic investments to revive our flagging economy.” Well, you be the judge. Some $30 billion, or less than 5% of the spending in the bill, is for fixing bridges or other highway projects. There’s another $40 billion for broadband and electric grid development, airports and clean water projects that are arguably worthwhile priorities.
Add the roughly $20 billion for business tax cuts, and by our estimate only $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus.”

Is spending our way out of a deficit the same as digging your way out of a hole?
I would think the best way to get out of a hole Is to fill it back in. Fill in a bit step up, scrape the edges some more fill in more and step up till you reach the top. Or should we dig till we reach china?
I don’t think the politicians have a grip on reality right now and I can say that as a Black woman from the hood I think all of them on the left and right should be fired – except maybe, just maybe the 11 Democrats that voted against the Bail out this time around and the Original few who voted against it when Bush first proposed it. They might actually still have some sense
Politicians are playing games when all we want is for them to save America not Pass the Pork and try and tell us it is a good thing.
And I keep thinking don’t the Democrats want to be right, don’t they want to pass something that will work and not just a massive spending increase, they have a chance here to make the republicans eat crow and all they seem to be doing is paying back friends and funding pet projects and not doing anything to fix the underlined problem that started this mess, Fannie and Freddie and the Housing/credit crunch. If they stick with that this bill would not only be cut in less than half but Politically in the eye of the public it would be a huge win. But instead it is all about playing a game instead of saving America or so it seems to the general public.

This is essentially misnamed. It should and needs to be called a “Social Works” bill not a stimulus bill. True!!!!!
An ouce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
What will be used to cure our economy when not one nation will lend us money. Or better yet when nations like China sell our debt to less than friendly nations. I for one am tired of our nation spending our money frivolously and running the treasury like a cash advance shop. If we have to watch our spending shouldn’t they? I don’t think that is too much to ask.

Here’s the Republican political calculus: The economy is unlikely to look significantly better by Fall 2010, so opposing the stimulus bill is smart politics because you can campaign hard against its failures.
Unemployment still high? The Republican plan would have had it much lower by now.
Homeowners still heading for foreclosure? If the Dems had listened to us, home prices would have been climbing by now.
That’s why every Republican is putting forth his or her own alternative, no matter how silly. They want to be able to say 18 months from now they had a better plan that would have had the economy humming much faster if only it had been enacted.
As such, they are political to the core, goaded by their spiritual leader Limbaugh, they will never allow their votes to be recorded in favor of this plan. So let’s get down to whatever plan can win 60 Senate votes, and move on.

I have to hand it to Obama for getting upset at the GOP partisanship. He has more than bent over for changes and compromise. True the Dems stuffed too many things that don’t belong in this bill, but let the Centrists scrub it up, approve it and move on. The American people demand that Congress do something! And that something is not the same old failed trickle-down economic policies of the last 8 years that favored the rich who took the money and ran. Where are the millions of jobs their policies were supposed to create? The GOP doesn’t get it. They lost, largely because they blew it on the economy. If they want a GOP-only plan, they’re dreaming. Screw ‘em!

“Remember, barry is the same guy who said “i had no idea rev racist was saying those things for 20 years.”"
Lol. Everybody else has moved on, dave. I suggest you do the same. Obama is not a racist and he does not hate American.
“$600 million for the gov’t to buy new cars.
$7billion to modernize federal buildings
$150million to the smithsonian
$252 billion for income-transfer payments (people get something for doing NOTHING)
$20 billion for food stamps
$81 billion for medicaid
$83 billion for the earned income credit for people who don’t pay income tax
$66 billion more for education”
Oh look, another cut and paste job. Who is doing your thinking for you today, dave? The new cars are HYBRID cars, which have many benefits, not the least of which is creating jobs for people to build them. Modernizing federal buildings has short and long term benefits, including jobs and making them more energy efficient, which will take awhile to pay itself off, but it will. It also sets a very positive example. I don’t know what the Smithsonian money is for, but I think it’s safe to assume that it was going through, anyway. The Smithsonian is America’s museum…give them whatever they need. We can’t let Amtrak fold. How can somebody get a tax credit if they don’t pay taxes. That is logistically impossible. They need MORE money for global warming studies, because obviously, some people need more than scientific proof of it. They need to pay Rush Limbaugh to get on board in order for the brain-washed to get it through their heads that this is real. Education is kind of important, no? Oh that’s right…the right isn’t fond of education. Because keeping the flyover states stupid keeps the elite wealthy Republicans in business. Educate them and they might catch on that their party doesn’t care about them, their money, or their beliefs.

How about we get a President who doesn’t just talk about changing the tone of Washington while engaging in highly ideological policies — like LBJ spending bills. Yes, Bush’s rendition of Reaganomics has been excessive and is partly responsible for what has occurred, but enacting failed LBJ “bold action” that gave us stagflation will be noway to fix the economy. I thought he was supposed to give us a third way, not more excess.

I can’t speak for anyone ele, but when I voted in Nov I voted for new ideas and a new path. My parents grew up in the depression and I remember the stories of how bad it was. I also know it was new ideas and a different way of thinking that got them out of it (FDR). The path we were on put us here, it is time to change course. If the republicans will not do that then this plan should be rammed down their throat for the benefit of all of us.

“Spend our way out of debt, great idea barry!”
Actually, it’s spend your way out of a recession, but close. That’s how you do it. Ask any economist. In fact, even your Republican leaders agree that we need to spend, they just don’t like the way the money’s being spent.

Yesterday Obama criticized the Republicans for calling the Democtrat’s package a spending package rather than a stimulus package. He asserted that stimulus and spending mean the same thing. Actually “spend” means to use up, to consume, to exhaust, to squander, to waste, to wear out. A “stimulus” is something that incites activity, rouses to action, or causes a response. This bill has caused a response. The response from the American people who our congress represents, and accordingly members of the legislature both Democrats and Republicans, is that it squanders taxpayer dollars. Many don’t think spending is the best way to incite activity in the lending industry. Isn’t that the reason we have a representative government? In a bi-partisan way they are doing their job as they voice their concerns and object to things they think are wrong. Not trying to start a war between the parties but isn’t object the thing the Democrats have done ever since they lost control in ’02? It’s the nature and duty of people who don’t agree to object. The legislators who objected then were right to object and the ones who object now are right to object. Best watch the opinion polls and listen to the people, Mr. President. That’s how you got elected and we were right about the bailouts, too. About the same percentage of the general public opposes this legislation as the percentage that opposed the financial and auto industry bailouts.

I just submitted a comment about five minutes ago. It was up only one minute and then removed it seems. Prehaps the persons editing the blog didn’t want the truth revealed. As I stated in the first blog, we are in a war of cultures here in the United States. The war is between the haves and have nots. Republicans for the most part represent the haves. Those who are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation descendants of European immigrants who were badly missed treated upon their arrival to the United States by their own kind. Once they gained wealty, power and prestige, they begin to put their plans in motion repaying America for all the hardship they suffered. With one side of their mouth they say that America is the greatest country on the face of the Earth and with the other side of their mouth they say we don’t want government in our business. They constantly critize the government and work tirelessly to usurp progress of all Americans in this country. They consider themselves Americans (great Americans) while thinking of those who are not like them as peasants who must be told what is good or not good for them. They have inflitrated our mass communications systems and unashamedly speak evil of civil authority and our government. They are not team players. They do not respect the office of Presidency of the United States of America and are vipers of bitterness and sedition. They are seeking to divide this nation. Those of them who have wiggled their way into civil positions are not working for all Americans, they are working for their unseen agenda which is becoming more apparent everyday. Today’s Republicans do not have the same values as Republicans of old who were compassionate, inclusive, and genuinely understood that the USA is only as great as her citizens are. Today’s Republicans are vicious, without compassion, selfish, self-centered and down right hateful. They have a better than you mentality and for some reason think they are the only Americans in this country. They don’t care about the reputation of this country and they are doing all they can to try and make President Obama fail, look ignorant, and unwise. They will not cooperate with him because of who he is and the party he is affliated with. They will not cooperate with him because they really don’t care about all Americans. However, what they don’t know is their arms are to short to box with God (I am not referring to President Obama as God). President Obama is a man of pray and one who desires to serve for the good of all Americans. He has a servants heart and God loves that and God will defend and protect him. It is time we as Christians pray and ask God to remove everyone who is in civil authority in our country who is not serving for the well being of all the citizens of the USA. If we don’t, this country will be ruined, not by violant war, but by ungodly people with wicked intentions.

If you really want to stimulate the economy lets try giving some of the 900 Billion to the people. Average the debt of a typical American, not including mortgage and car loans, then tack on $50,000 to every man woman and child. This would equate to approximately 225 billion dollars. That is every man woman and child receiving an average of $75,000. That leaves Congress 575 billion to waste…er stimulate the economy with

Most of the beneficiaries of it are children. $20 billion for food stamps…yes, people are going to need those. In case you haven’t noticed, the unemployment rate is alarmingly high, through no fault of the people who are now unemployed. It’s not the just welfare contingent of the past now who is going to need the assistance.

What worked when FDR was in office will not work now because of CREDIT CARD DEBT! Democrats need to learn something, the last stimulus check failed because everyone paid their credit cards, there was no personal credit card debt back then.
This bill is full of wasteful spending and Obama knows it and needs to quit paying back those that voted him in office and deal with reality and what will actually work!!
This bill will not and the dems can take full responsibility for it and the last 2 years under their control that put us where we are at now!!! That along with CLINTON giving anyone homeownership whether they could afford to pay for it or not!!
You were warned of continued layoffs if Obama got elected and now you have them, with no tax cuts to offset his higher taxes there is no where to turn but to layoffs to offet them.

Why don’t we mix things together — now that would be a new idea!

The man has been in office for one month and the media is out of control. As always, reporting constant miscommunication and rubbish. The truth is, Obama has done a lot of good in one month. A half million jobs lost in January 09 alone. Obama is keeping the newly jobless families in mind when he pushes this package. The rich senators are not losing their jobs. In addition, Bush made a mess and spent 700 billion to help out his crooked buddies on Wall Street. Obama is trying to help everyone and no one in the media seems to understand the scope of the problem.

How can Obama be responsible for the layoffs? He has only been in office for 2 weeks? Did I miss something? Bush blew it and did so over 8 years… The new guy is being blamed for everything and told he does not know what he is doing. Two weeks is not much time to reverse or address something that took years to create. The reality is he is in charge and the people made that happen… he deserves more than 2 weeks before he is labelled a failure.

I love how Republicans are being blamed for holding this hostage. Moderate Dems are not voting for this as well.
True stimulus and job creation comes from manufacturing. Parks, museums, fine arts, global warming research, etc do not generate long standing jobs. It is simple: if the project cannot generate revenue on it’s own at some point in the future, then it does not create a long term job!!!
Posted by: JWW322 | February 6, 2009, 10:47 am 10:47 am
It’s the essential fraud of rushing through a bill in which the normal rules (committee hearings, finding revenue to pay for the programs) are suspended on the grounds that a national emergency requires an immediate job-creating stimulus — and then throwing into it hundreds of billions that have nothing to do with stimulus, that Congress’s own budget office says won’t be spent until 2011 and beyond, and that are little more than the back-scratching, special-interest, lobby-driven parochialism that Obama came to Washington to abolish. He said.
Not just to abolish but to create something new — a new politics where the moneyed pork-barreling and corrupt logrolling of the past would give way to a bottom-up, grass-roots participatory democracy. That is what made Obama so dazzling and new. Turns out the “fierce urgency of now” includes $150 million for livestock (and honeybee and farm-raised fish) insurance.
The Age of Obama begins with perhaps the greatest frenzy of old-politics influence peddling ever seen in Washington. By the time the stimulus bill reached the Senate, reports the Wall Street Journal, pharmaceutical and high-tech companies were lobbying furiously for a new plan to repatriate overseas profits that would yield major tax savings. California wine growers and Florida citrus producers were fighting to change a single phrase in one provision. Substituting “planted” for “ready to market” would mean a windfall garnered from a new “bonus depreciation” incentive.
After Obama’s miraculous 2008 presidential campaign, it was clear that at some point the magical mystery tour would have to end. The nation would rub its eyes and begin to emerge from its reverie. The hallucinatory Obama would give way to the mere mortal. The great ethical transformations promised would be seen as a fairy tale that all presidents tell — and that this president told better than anyone.
I thought the awakening would take six months. It took two and a half weeks.

Catastrophe, mind you. So much for the president who in his inaugural address two weeks earlier declared “we have chosen hope over fear.” Until, that is, you need fear to pass a bill.

Hey Scott Jefrie,
You are right the GOP is singing the same song because Dems are playing old movies (the do nothing movies). So what is your point?
Posted by: vegas | February 6, 2009, 10:51 am 10:51 am

Obama would be a fool to embrace the GOP. They are just a bunch of sore losers who will never be “grown ups”. As long as they don’t get their own way, they will pout and throw temper tantrums. Look what they did to Bill Clinton for years and years and years with Ken Starr and that whole farce. GOP ARE HYPOCRITES and OBAMA SHOULD NOT EMBRACE THEM. Ummm… Obama’s the one telling the “center” to work out a compromise and he’ll accept it… He just wants a bill to sign and has already conceeded WAY too much to the republicans already… so, enough with the smear job reporting, ABC, thank you! Did you ever complain about Bush being too partisan? Ever? Even though Bush campaigned on bipartisanship? No, I don’t think so…
Posted by: Mike | February 6, 2009, 10:53 am 10:53 am
I would just like to point something out to those who called the Bush Administration “Fear Mongerer’s”, which is hard to argue. The defenition of Fear Mongering is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end. The feared object or subject is sometimes exaggerated. Now, here is a quote from President Obama…”Without swift passage of his stimulus bill, an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with catastrophe.” That my friends….is also fear mongering! He and his party are using the economy as an excuse to shove this democrat spending bill full of pork down our throats and accusing the opposition of trying to derail the economy. Please dont let your political affiliation to one side or the other blind you to the fact that the president is using the same old partisan tactics despite his eloquent rhetoric to win the election. He talked bipartisanship and change while trying to appeal to the middle but has not done anything to back up that promise. Wasteful gov’t spending is not change, its status quo….stop being so ignorant and demand the change you were promised….the change you VOTED for!

Larry! I am sooo glad I got a rise out of you. It is good that you have accomplished so much. I myself am a business owner. My family works very hard to provide a service to our community. We pay our taxes and we help others who are starting their own businesses, sometimes going without ourselves. However, our greatest joy is watching others flourish and do well. I am not affiliated with any party; I voted for President Bush, because at the time he seemed to be the better candidate. I did not vote for him because he was a Republican. I have an issue with people who divorce their spouses for political reasons and that’s why I didn’t vote for Kerry. I voted for President Obama because of his servant’s heart and his desire to see all people prosper. Things in the stimulus packet that doesn’t directly help people needs to be cut out. Education, infastructure, public safety, health, and fair trade are issues that should never be comprised in our country. Unfortunately, Republicans during their cycle of governing neglected. They forgot the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Wealth is for helping others. Why is that sooo hard for most Republicans who are in the media on a day-to-day basis; prehaps, not you, to understand. Conservativism if it is rooted in stinginess and greed is not Christainity as most Republicans profess themselves to be. By the way, why are Republicans expressing outage that Madoff could conduct a Ponzi scheme for over fifty years without bringing him to justice. Also, why aren’t Republicans outraged that Wall St. executives received bonuses based on debt tax payers, likeyourself and me, must pay? Why aren’t Republicans questioning the audicity of bailed out banks not lending as they promised to do when they asked for help? Where is the passion about doing what’s right because it’s right that Republicans often suggested they have a corner market on? Doing what’s right isn’t hard, but requires courage; especially, when those who should be with you are opposing you. I support our President Obama because his heart is to do what is right because it is right and that is to serve the American people (all of the American people).

Some of you democrates are very ignorant. This bill is loaded w/ unnecissary spending. I mean so many billion for global warming research?? Where is the stimulation in that. Yes, updating our roads will create jobs, but only for a short lived time. This bill is full of stuff that will not help our economy. Maybe I am just niave, but I want the government to send every family a nice chunck of change. After all this is my tax money. If they send us a good about of money then, us the people, can catch up on our mortgages, we can pay off some bills, we can shop in our stores, we can buy new cars. This is what our economy needs. For the people to starts spending money. Too many people are hurting financially and this would help them out. Get things going again. Too bad Obama is all about his power up there and not about the people. I was not a Bush fan, but I am not an Obama fan at all. He has shown me nothing. He has shown that he can play the blame game just as well as anyone else. A stimulas package needs to create jobs and have tax cuts for hardworking people. This “stimulas” is just wasteful spending in areas that will not help the economy. Wake up Americans, if this passes it will not help anyone out, it wont get our economy back on its feet, it will just be another huge debt added on to our deficit.

Parts of this country is living in the 19th century. We need to create jobs; THE GOVERNMENT MUST SPEND ON THESE TYPES OF JOBS!!

LIFETL: What kind of stimulus is sending all Americans a paycheck? Most people will pay down debt or save the money (2/3 did so last spring with the rebate). Jobs will not be created. Jobs are being lost every month, and this will continue for at least another six months. Most economists of all political stripes agree that a STIMULUS bill is badly needed, and soon. Infrastructure spending is the way to go.

First up, can this article be any longer (and drawn out, I got it)? What kind of bipartisan are the conservative neocons insisting upon? The hand of openness and cooperation has been presented yet the demeanor of the right consistently denies approach-ability and credibility. These minor irreverent details regarding pork satire only precludes the often-stated and will only lead to occlusion relief for the masses. Stimulate the economy now or see the pits of depression take hold and never let go.

This bill is a perfect example of how our Gov’t has been digging us deeper and deeper into debt for years now….it started with the government spending and spending into debt and that mentality spread to the citizens who now buy homes they cannot afford and spend money on gadgets and crap using money they do not have. I am thankful my parents taught me that you should not buy something, until you have saved up the money to buy it…..its quite a concept that we should try and go back to! We need to be cutting back on huge gov’t spending to start paying off the trillions we owe to other countries but instead we are using stimulating the economy as an excuse to spend more money on crap.
Posted by: Curt | February 6, 2009, 11:07 am 11:07 am
Obama has a golden opportunity to bring Republican’s and Democratic together. He simply states that to ensure they cooperate he will veto any relief bill they try to pass. Not because he disagrees wit h the bill, but because it forces them to get a two-thirds vote, only achievable by a two-thirds agreement on the bill, ensuring its passage.
To do that he will lose political points with Democrats and gain points with Republican. It will also let the world know that he will use his Presidential power for unity inclusiveness.

How do people like you not realize that the greatest way to cripple someone is to give them a welfare check. It kills incentive and destroys their sense of self worth.
Every country, including America, must have a support system to help those who TRULY cannot help themselves (shelters, food banks, clothing availible, ect). However, entitlements, which are barry’s entire platform, are something completely different. They are really like handcuffs. Liberals refuse to believe that.
Liberals have ensured their continued reelctions through entitlements. They create generations of poverty by spreading the wealth around.

Jose – Infrastructure spending does not build long term jobs. If the job cannot generate revenue on its own, then it will not be there when the project is over.
I agree that infrastructure is important, but it has to be done intelligently. When you read that a park will create 7 jobs, my first question is how do you sustain those jobs after the first year? Where will the money come from?

It is better to have a job and consistant cash flow than a one time check. If you are not working a tax break does little for you. If you are rich a tax cut just adds to your bank account… you will not spend it. Spending money (stimulus) creates demand for goods, creates jobs to meet those demnds which in turn put more money in the system via purchases by the newly employed…. anyone getting this?
Posted by: Dan | February 6, 2009, 11:10 am 11:10 am
Thank you Jax. Well said.
The GOP plan presented yesterday was all tax cuts and no government stimulus spending. Although tax cuts do stimulate capital spending in the long run (people will invest in the stock market if they will be taxed at a lower rate later on), but in the short run it does almost nothing. So this is the extent of the GOP plan. Thanks McCain, you may be a war hero, but thank God you lost in November – - – his economic policy set forth yesterday is n othing short of economic ignorance writ large.

It has nothing to do with a fear of Obama being “anti-business.” These layoffs are entirely performance related. You think Citi laid off 50,000 people globally in November because Obama won? No. The company I work for used to be under the Citi umbrella….I was a Citi employee last year and the restructuring was happening all year long. LIFETL; Are you aware that John McCain yesterday introduced a bill that recommended discontinuance of collection of all payroll taxes for one year in the interest of stimulating the economy. No pork additives. Think about having no income tax, no FICA, no social security, no medicare taxes taken out of our paychecks for a full year. Think of businesses not having to pay their share of employee taxes. Wouldn’t that save jobs? Wouldn’t people start to spend with extra money in every week’s paycheck? Wouldn’t people laid off be rehired with demand for production increased? That’s stimulus and it’s immediate. Meanwhile the government would have to run on borrowed money for a year so this administration could give ye olde government budget a trim during the next year instead of thinking up more ways to spend our money and grow the government. Of course the Democrats didn’t consider that idea for long before they insisted it wouldn’t create jobs. We need private sector jobs, not government shovel jobs. The government is a non profit organization, but the private sector is capitalist. The profits of business is the only thing that ultimately feeds the government. When the government spends there’s no return on the money spent. It’s gone, used up, exhausted.

JWW: Don’t understand your point. You say infrastruture spending does not create lasting jobs. So every construction job out there is a useless short term job? A building goes up, it may take a year or two, then it’s over. Was all the investment in that building, or that bridge, for naught? I don’t understand your point. Bridges, roads, are projects that MUST be done, or do you want to plunge off the next bridge you drive across in Minnesota, or drown in a highway flood outside of D.C.? Basic infrastructure is badly needed, and now.

Dan – “spending money” does not create a demand for goods! Having a product or service that everyone wants or needs creates a demand for goods.
Remember all of the “internet” fools who spent money foolishly after they received their first IPO. What happened to them after they spent all of their money and had no product to show for it? They went out of business and more jobs were lost.

When the other side is in control they cry for bipartisanship and promise they wont be like that….then they get elected and instead of substantive talks to do what is best for all citizens, they do the same things they were complaining about before. We won, we will do what we want and you cant do anything about it nah nah nah nah nah nah! Republicans are all scum who got us into this mess in the first place with their failed free market deregulatory policies.
Obama should steamroller these fools and ignore their feeble, pathetic whines altogether.
Republicans only whine about “bipartisanship” when they’re in the minority. Where was their bipartisanship when they were busy running the country into the ground?
Every single Republican in Congress is tainted by the failure of the Bush years. Until a new crop of Republicans is elected, these fools should be publicly scorned, spat on and totally ignored by decent, hardworking Americans.
Republicans are total scum. The hell with all of them!

Jose: you send enough $$ to the people and here is what they will do: Catch up or pay off their mortgage; Pay off cars or buy new cars; pay off other debts: credit cards, medical, whatever else they have. Guess what the does in turn, it frees up other money to be spent on shopping and things like that. In turn that means money is being put right back into the economy. Consumers will start buying products, thus creating manufacturing jobs, sales jobs, and everything else. Like I said though, it has to be a good chunck of change though, not crappy $1000. $1000 doesnt get you anywhere these days thats why that bill did nothing. If they sent out the equal amount of this bill to the Americans that would result in a huge amount given back to the people. Think about it. Its not hard to understand. I know if I were to receive a good amount of money I would pay off what I could. Once that stuff is paid off, I could consider buying a house or buying new furniture (my used furniture is starting to show a lot of wear on it.) I know many other Americans that would like to update their houses w/ newer appliances or just go shopping. This all puts money in the economy. Oh and just think of the stocks that could be bought. Smart investers would buy stock b/c everything is so low right now, that would help as well….

Why do Republicans hate Obama so much? They need to shut the hell up and be more patriotic and support their President.
Americans are fed up with Republicans and their pathological partisanship.
The GOP is on very thin ice with the American people as it is, and if they don’t get with the program and start helping to clean up the economic mess that their failed policies caused, then America is going decide that the GOP is completely irrelevant.
The GOP are going to joing the whigs and the know-nothings and the Bullmoose party in the graveyard of failed American political parties very soon.
Posted by: The Sarge | February 6, 2009, 11:27 am 11:27 am
What does Rick Klein define as the ‘center’ in terms of the size of the bill and proportion of spending to tax cuts?
John McCain defines bipartisanship as a $475 billion bill with 70% tax cuts.
Jim DeMint defines bipartisanship as a $3 trillion bill with 100% tax cuts.
President Obama supports the bipartisan coalition’s efforts to craft a $800 billion bill with 55% spending and 45% tax cuts and he’s partisan and unwilling to embrace the center?!?
To coin the phrase of Pres. Obama, is Rick Klein serious?

This post is depressing. So much hateful partisan bickering. Do you really feel like your much beloved political or economic perspective is worth completely discounting the opinion of others? What about the opinion of experts? Why not look to people who are schooled and experienced in economics and economic recession. Most (yes, most, read this week’s Economist) say that stimulus spending is a MUST, and SOON. The longer the wait, the more months the recession will last.
Face it, people, government spending on infrastructure is stimulus spending; tax cuts for the bottom 2/3 of taxpayers has been found to be equally stimulative.
Posted by: Jose | February 6, 2009, 11:28 am 11:28 am

Jose – Ahh, the old scare tactic of falling off a bridge.
I did not say infrastructure jobs were unimportant, but they do need to done wisely. Construction is good (buildings, housing, etc), but only when there is a demand. What has happened with some construction is they continued to build when there was no demand for it in the first place.
Florida has a housing problem – it has too many for sale and not enough buyers. Charlotte has urban sprawl because builders were moving further and further out, but the infrastructure could not handle it. The inner cities in NC are now becoming more violent. Massachusetts, DC and New York have increased property taxes when on property that have actually decreased in value.

If this were indeed a stimulus bill and not a spending bill, it wouldn’t be having the problems passing that it does. Too many don’t know, or don’t care, about the difference. For years people have lived outside of their means, especially politicians no matter what side they’re on. It’s time everyone takes responsibility for their own actions. If you have to eat beans and rice to make it through, do so. Much of America could benefit from a change in diet anyway, which in turn would solve many of the financial problems. It’s long past time that people quit whining about how bad they’ve got it and take responsibility for themselves. If your parents didn’t teach you that, you got ripped off.

It really does make me laugh when the obama sheep on here keep saying the GOP is being so partisan by not falling at pelosi/obama’s feet and voting for this bill. If you listend to anything other then a democrat talking, you would know that republicans, and some dems, are asking for over 100bn to be removed from the bill. Reid said yesterday that he has enough votes to get it passed and refuses to take any more out. Its not just about the GOP wanting only tax cuts in the stimulus, they want the useless pork removed because its just NOT RIGHT IN THIS ECONOMIC CLIMATE TO SPEND LIKE THEY ARE PROPOSING. ITS SIMPLE REALLY.

BOstinks – who said I had to be open minded about idiotic scum like you? Republicans are such dopes that think “open minded” means embracing any idiotic idea that comes down the pike – even theirs! That’s the problem with you moronic Republicans – you believe your own stereotypes so much that you constantly get blindsided by reality (like what happened in Iraq and the economy for instance).
Also, I am a Veteran, and if you ever question my patriotism again, I will find you and I will shove my broze star and CIB right up your fat, Republican, goldbricking keister. Always remember that.
Now, as for how the GOP tanked the economy, allow me to refresh your memory. It was Phil Gramm & the House GOP who led the charge to repeal the Glass-Steagal act in 1999, which led directly to the removal of regulatory protections that would have prevented the cedit-default swap meltdown that got us into this mess.
You dumb Republicans need to take credit for your mistakes if you ever want to be taken seriously by the rest of us again.

They have their own constituents to represent, who also expect certain outcomes.

answer… RESPECT THERE MAY ACTUALLY be PORK IN THIS SO CALLED “STIMULUS BILL” and that there are other viewpoints in America other than Obama’s decrees… and we have a right to DISAGREE and call for a more CENTERIST APPROACH…
I am also an American Jax! We also have rights as you do. We did not elect a dictator who threatens us with disaster… that is a demagogue. We elected a President for ALL THE PEOPLE not a few idealists!
Disaster is rather strong considering were we’ve come from Antonio and the messiah is hardly a dictator (to remind you, we have 3 arms of our government that keep everything in check, no need for a demagogue). The stimulus package is being stalled because of a few minor hiccups that the neocons consider futile and unjustly considerate. I am an American too and wish that democracy always maintains its ability to govern the people’s decree and not some petty oligarchy that we’ve all seen to much of. Pass the bill and stimulate the economy.

How about a tax cut – oh wait I don’t have a job – I guess that won’t help’ Didn’t Mr. Tax Cut Bush do that already?? Any other solutions than ripping of the taxpayer and screwing the legal US citizen for greed??

I want the items in the package that is not going to help create/keep jobs. Find out who is adding pet projects to this bill and call them out on it.
We do not need to give any more money to big banks…support the smaller community ones that are actually lending money, small business, companies that will remain in the US, groups like Housing Assistance Recovery Program in Somerset NJ(www.fbcsomerset.com)and close our borders…no more immigrants until the US gets back on track.

Okay, I’m confused. In my mind the true political “center” would encompass the moderate left-leaning Republicans and the moderate and right-leaning Democrats with as much to either side as possible, which IS bipartisanship.
Posted by: Publius | February 6, 2009, 11:52 am 11:52 am
Let me get this straight – Obama spends most of last week talking and listening to the house GOP and they turn around and reward this with not a single vote and now Rick Klein is accusing Obama of being too partisan?
Are you freaking kidding me?
Ask yourself this: where was so-called Republican “bipartisanship” when the Dems were in the minority?
Face it – today’s GOP doesn’t know the meaning of the word bipartisanship. These clowns came up in the most partisan party in modern American history and they simply do not know how to compromise.
I’m sick and tired of America being held hostage by this small minority of hyperpartisan Republican ideologues who don’t understand the art of political compromise.
Obama should exercise his very real mandate from the American people and roll right over these Republican extremists and obstructionists.
America wants results and progress – not temper tantrums from the minority GOP!

Silky; Seems the Democrats have confused thousands and millions with billions and trillions in every way imagineable. They don’t seem to understand the magnitude of the numbers they’re throwing around so loosely. Five hundred thousand jobs amounts to about 1% of the jobs. Half a million sounds even worse. That’s a lot but it sounds much worse when they call it half a million instead of 1%. It’s a way of expressing CATASTROPHIC, I’m telling you, it’s CATASTROPHIC. At the same time they only want to SPEND 1 trillion. So small an amount…it’s 100,000 millions of dollars they are proposing to spend.

Let the American people know exactly and precisely the items that are PORK and why you consider them to be PORK and not beneficial to all, if not most, of the American people? Otherwise, you are beginning to look like economic terriorists who are trying the hold the American people as economic hostiages.

This bill is a Spend-u-lus or as some people call it…a Porkulus bill. 735 pages and growing with no real “stimulus” in this bill. It is full of spending on pet projects from our “representatives”. Who do they really represent? Certainly not the American people! Congress represents the Green movement, the unions, etc – seems like this bill is to pay back the lobbyists and campaign supporters over the last 40 years. Congress and the president are jamming their social engineering bill down our throats and moving us closer to socialism. Socialism failed in Europe and it will fail here. It is truly disgusting. Everyone wants a bailout, no one seems to take responsibility for their actions and is truly afraid of failure. Failure only leads to your next success! Thomas Edison lived by this belief, as did Ray Kroc – the genius behind the McDonald’s franchise. The best thing government can do is to cut corporate taxes and eliminate the capital gains tax. When business has more money, they will hire people! Tax businesses more, and they will lay people off. Look at history and you will see that this is the case. We are being tested as Americans – do we believe in Capitalism and the free market or do we want a nanny State that redistributes wealth and tells us how to live? I don’t want socialism or a nanny State. If you do, at least be open about it, tell it like it is and stop using a euphemism. This bill is socialism; it is not a stimulus for capitalism.

We are trillions of dollars in debt due to the previous administration’s policy of generating wars that have gone nowhere and have allowed the US economy to collapse. Yet, our elected officials are balking at the idea of an $800 billion “stimulus” plan that may help stimulate the economy? Why are they even considering any hesitation? Time is of the essence here. The longer we take in making this important decision, the longer it will take the US economy to recover. When TARP was quickly approved by both parties, we did not have the bickering we have now. Yet, we don’t even know how TARP dollars were spent. Had we placed some strong guidelines in TARP, don’t you think the economy might be moving in a different direction? Why did Paulson and Bernanke not think of wanting to know how that money was going to be spent? Was it because it was pay-off for their banking and financial buddies? For Republicans and their “conservative” buddies to question the current administration’s steps of trying to help OUR economy only smacks of their own interests. Don’t you think if the previous administration and cronies had been truly “conservative”, the economy would not be suffering now? We can all go on and on with our ideas and opinions, but what EVERYONE needs to do is support the current administration. If this plan is not successful, we will have elections in 4 years where we can make changes AGAIN. Republicans need to learn to support when they are NOT in power. The American people need to remember we should vote ALL elected officials out when they perform poorly or no later than 2 elections. Can ANYONE OR SHOULD ANYONE question a bill’s contents? Absolutely and we should be ever mindful of how we spend hard earned dollars and not spend on “pork” projects, but we also need to know when to support the “Team”. That’s the beauty of our democracy.

Mr. Reid/Obama – There is a way to fix it. Consumers are paying way too too much interest on their credit cards. These credit card companies are taking consumers money. Explain this to me Mr. Reid– When I pay my car payment of $1,000.00 per month tell me why is it that $500.00 of it goes to interest alone. Not to mention my other credit cards which is the same case. Half of the payments go to interest. That’s $500.00 plus less per month I have to spend. If you stop these companies from doing this to consumers, we will have money to spend and we won’t need a bailout at all! If you don’t fix this then our economic situation is only going to get worse and this bailout will only be a temporary bandaide! These credit card companies should only make a small profit. We, the consumers have no money! REGULATE these credit card/loan companies NOW before it’s too late. Then add the other goodies like rebuliding our schools, reform medical insurance, solar energy, global warming, etc.

Indy_voter – The republicans controlled the EXECUTIVE branch for the last eight years; the Democrats controlled the House and Senate – or the LEGISLATIVE branch for two of the last eight years. The DEMOCRATS controlled Congress in 2006 – NOT the Republicans, however, both parties are to blame for this mess. Barney Frank, George Bush, Chris Dodd…yeh, all of them. I see you support this bill. Why? What part of this bill actually stimulates the economy? What part of it actually create REAL jobs? I don’t see it in this bill…it simply spends money on frivilous projects – 400M for contraception? Millions for resodding the Washington mall? This is a HUGE waste of money. So I think the GOP should stand up and STOP this Obama-nation. Pun intended.
Posted by: Say_No_To_Socialism | February 6, 2009, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm
This stimulus bill is the result of the inexperience of OBama. He and his economic advisors had over 2 months to draft a stimulus plan-I believe he first mentioned 300billon. Instead, he let Pelosi, Franks and Reid do his job for him and they put in money for all their pet projects. In order words, they failed him and thus the American people. I thought everyone voted for “Change you can believe in”. Well this bill is not change especially when groups like ACORN and LaRaza are included for 5.2Billion.
His second mistake was announcing the close of GITMO without having a plan. He can not send them to a regular prison or a military prison which means a new high security prison must be built. Do you want this in your backyard? Also, they are not covered by the Geneva Convention which only covers the armed services in uniform of member nations. They are terrorist. When they capture an American serviceman or even civilians, they torture and behead them. They have no respect for human life. Additionally, the military court system was set up by Congress and approved by the Supreme Court so why is Obama questioning there Constitutionally. Why give these people our Constitutional rights to use against us. Obama and Eric Holder are soft on Terrorism and we will all pay the price for their actions.

Bi-partisanship?!?!
Not from this President. All you
liberals are bad mouthing the
Republicans. Yet the President has
done nothing but talk “AT”, N-O-T
talk “With” the other side. Basically
vote what I want and shut up. That
doesn’t work, and it never did. Stop
all this slobbering by the press, and
the Persident needs to go to Congress
sit down and hammer out a “G-O-O-D”
package that benefits this country.
Those who keep blaming the
Republicans better look closer, there
are a lot of Democrats jumping on
board that so-called partisanship
train by the Republicans. That’s
because they know the partisanship is
coming from the White House, and the
citizens of this country are not happy
with what is currently on the table.
Put a good package out that benefits
real job opportunities, and leave the
pork barrel out. Otherwise all you
have is a bunch of social services
with big bureaucracies with lots of
overhead and little to no actual
improvements for the citizens. If we
would centralize most of the
bureaucracies and cut down on all the
overhead, we probably could save
billion annually. President OBama
needs to stop his partisan non-sense
and demostrate R-E-A-L bi-partisan
leadership. Otherwise he’s proving to
me that he is nothing more than the
same old Chicago machine, aka liars,
cheats, backstabbers and theives.
We need real leadership now and this
political fingerpointing isn’t getting
it done. Find common ground NOW.

American Populace opened its eyes and stretched, yawning, “Are we there yet?” Uncle Sam continued down the road making the same predictable turns and stops. “No, just a little while longer. Be patient,” came the reply from the front seat. Uncle Sam cast a wearisome glance at the back seat where American P. lay sprawled on her back looking hopelessly bored. “Will we EVER get there?” she moaned.
Our representatives in the House and Senate have grown accustomed to doing nothing but bickering, leading the American populace in circles of fruitless excursions to nowhere. The number one job of the Republicans is to stop the Democrats even at the expense of what is good for the American populace. Even the Democrats have shown they too are willing to sacrifice the American populace in order to stop Republicans from helping Americans. Either way, it is a lose/lose for all Americans unless our house and senate leadership are held accountable. If this were a business, they would be fired for all of their non-productive finger pointing. Let’s get rid of the incompetence in our House and Senate leadership.

If you ask me, the GOP are a bunch of economic saboteurs who not only destroyed our economy, but now want to impede our recovery out of sheer spite.
Some of their leaders like Rush Limbaugh have already stated openly that they’re rooting against Obama and our economic recovery!
It’s unbelievable! Obama needs to stop reaching out to these sabotuers and start playing hardball. He needs to shove this stimulus down their throats and shame them for all the damage their failed economic policies have already caused.
The Republican party does NOT work for our country’s best interest, and they would rather sabotage our economy than let a Democrat fix it.
I say the hell with all Republicans once and for all!

To JWW322:
I do listen to conservatives, because I think if you want to know what someone is thinking listen to them talk. Not only should you listen to what they are saying, you should listen for what they are not saying, look at how they are saying it, and why they are saying it. Consider the circumstances and research the motive. There are alot of things conservatives are saying, but there are a lot of things they are not saying. It’s what they are not saying that bothers me.
To Dave:
People like me belive citizenship renders entitlement to a government that does all it can to ensure the rights of all citizens are protected, to help those who are in need, and promote prosperity and good will. You are probably thinking that people like me are on welfare; contrary to what you thing, I am not on welfare and I have never received welfare. My parents, African-American, never filled out free and reduced lunch forms for me to eat lunch at school, my parents impressed upon me the value of doing and being your best, and doing to others as I want others to do to me. I want someone, who is in a position to help me to do so when I need help and that’s why I help people who need it. I want my children to benefit from the good seeds (deeds) I sow towards others;therefore, I make an effort to do good and teach them to love and do good also. People like me, American citizens are entitled to a government that works for the least of us to the greatest for us and for the benefit of all. I don’t believe that is the genuine agenda of Republicans! Do you?
Posted by: mims | February 6, 2009, 12:22 pm 12:22 pm
Anne G – I agree with you. The Republicans did overspend and were not fiscally conservative. I am a conservative, but I AM NOT a Republican. The party abandoned their principles while in control of the legislative and executive branches. We need true fiscal conservatism now and not another “stimulus”. If it passes (God help us if it does), where will the money come from? China? Printing more money? When does it end?

It’s little details like this that make the rest of us laugh at how ignorant and gullible you wingnut jackasses really are.

The more I read about the repubs and their complaints, the more I believe that they truly want Obama and the dems to fail. They really don’t care about our country or the American people. They are just so angry that they have been beaten in the election that they are going to do everything in their power, just for spite, to cause Obama and the dems to fail regardless of what it will do to the country and the people. Talk about unpatriotic – the repubs are proving to be the epitamy of unpatriotic. Their leader, Limbaugh the Insane, even admitted that – he said he wants to see Obama fail. Well they are trying their best to cause that. Only it won’t be just Obama and the dems failing, it will be the whole country and our way of life and we will have the repubs to thank.

Do conservatives have any new ideas to offer? Or are they just going to keep clinging to their failed ideology of tax cuts and deregulation?
I’m a moderate and it’s clear that the GOP took the conservative deregulatory philosophy far too far and trashed our economy.
Now it’s time to go the other way and pump some cash back into the economy. By all reasonable estimates, Obama’s spending bill is the right thing to do – and maybe we should even be spending more.
In my opinion, neither Keynsian style big government NOR Friedman style lassiez-faire is the answer by themselves. They’re both tools in a smart government’s economic arsenal. We’ve gone overboard on the Friedman style dergulation and free market radicalism in the last 20 years – and I largely blame this on the GOP confusing an economic tool for a guiding ideology.
Now it’s time to correct course and move leftward, and let the government’s aggregate capital jumpstart the ecomony again.
It seems pretty common sense to me, and I support Mr. Obama 100% so far. I think Republicans and Conservatives need to suck it up, admit their mistakes, and give our President a chance to lead.
This is no time for partisan sour grapes.

Please check out the backgrounds of the Republicans, Democrates, media personalities who have much to say about the country’s present economic condition. People talk in line with their personal interests, that what propaganda is. Rush is not an entertainer, he is a propagandist for the materially wealthy Republicans. If the people can’t buy anything and the government injects money into the system to PURCHASE things that creates jobs. You just proved my point. Yes we have a precious document that indicates the right to “the pursuit of happiness.” Your comment shows that you could careless about helping those who are in pursuit of happiness reach their goal. If you are a Republican, do you really believe our government conducting the business of the people does not contribute to the pursuit of happiness, by the way we do elect our officials to represent us in government, believing they will do just that help us by passing policies and laws that optimizes our opportunities. I am a tax payer and I expect, no I demand, my government to do what it is supposed to do, and that is do what is best for all Americans. Need I remind you, it’s been Republicans that didn’t regulate unfair trade deals, that use every loop hole in the system they can to not pay taxes. They are the ones who cry no more taxes, when they full well understand that government does not work for free. It takes money to finance the trillion dollar war we should have never entered. Remember, former President Bush, Republican, and all of Cheney’s business acquainces that profited from an unjust war.

If only all you Republicans were as honest about your treachery and anti-Americanism as Benedict Arnold.
It’s become more than obvious over the last 20 years that Republicans put the good of their party over the good of our country, and their toxic partisanship is standing in the way of our economic recovery.
Republicans are so full of spite that they would rather let our economy go into a full-scale depression than let a Democratic President succeed in fixing their mess.

OK, there are some projects that really aren’t about stimulating the economy. The condoms issue, a few more. OK, most of these are in the millions. Let’s total them all up…let’s estimate they are all costing us about $2B. That is about .0022% of the whole package. Whine, Reps. Keep going for the “NASCAR” crowd that believe anything you spout. Like it or not, there are educated people in this Country. And we voted for a new path and a renewed sense of optimism. We rejected fear-mongering. Compare the $2B in “pork” to the costs of the completely unnecessary Iraq war. Why are we not up in arms about those costs??? Oh, because we need “Victory” to keep our Country’s ego intact. How about a little humility, and an apology to the families of the 5,000 soldiers lost, and the 500,000+ Iraqis dead and their Country left in ruins because of lies from W. and Cheney. Would our Country have gone to war because “Saddam is a bad guy?” No. We were fear-mongered into a silly pay-back for W’s daddy war which left Saddam in power. Plenty of bad dictators out there…N Korea, Iran, etc…why don’t we take them all on if that’s our Country’s new justification for war.
And as to Obama’s cabinet appointments, do you think he knew about the tax issues of Dascle, et al.? No, the vetting process and the financial review is extremely tough. If all of us on this board had our tax returns from the past 10 years examined by the people that are examining the taxes of the appointees, 90% of us would probably owe something more. And, do you think Daschle did his taxes himself??? I believe he has an accountant, and, like me, I rely on my accountant’s expertise to complete my tax returns correctly. Go after Daschle’s accountant, not Daschle.
Reps, your sun is sinking lower and lower…..

CBO: Obama stimulus harmful over long haul
Stephen Dinan

Your head is far too filled with far-left-propaganda to think rationally.
This is what ticks me off about you liberals. You claim to be about human rights, but taking out a dictator who murdered 700,000 of his own people with chemical weapons he supposedly never had was not high on your list. You also caused millions of south vietnamese to be slaughtered by the north, because “make love not war”, right?
Are you aware that some of most horrendous and disgusting cases of child abuse cases happen when welfare is involved? Unchecked welfare allows people to have children who should not be having children. Do you ever watch the news and put 2 and 2 together?
The 21 yr old with 4 kids and a different boyfriend every week is allowed to continue having children because of welfare. The kids have a terrible quality of life and you liberals couldn’t care less.
You are so obsessed with hatred for corporations and rich people, that you refuse to see that liberal policies have led to some of the most horrific living conditions for children in America today.

everybody agrees we need a stimulus bill, but only 1 part of this bill is stimulus. If you strip out stimulus and leave the pork, then you’d have a passable bill in half an hour – deal with the pork later, it has nothing to do with fixing the recession right now.
republicans are rejecting this and i applaud them for it.

When President Obama turned over the drafting of this stimulus package to Nancy Pelosi he betrayed my trust and he betrayed my vote. To allow her to shut out the views of those elected to represent millions upon millions of Americans is inexcusable. I am against
this package as it’s written; not because of its size or scope, but because of its distribution. If the main purpose is to stimulate the economy, then the bulk of the money should go into the private sector. It should go into the hands of the people, the ones who buy the cars, the homes, and the products. It should go to the businesses so they can become profitable and rehire their employees, and attract investment. To me this bill was drafted more as political payback for special interests than to solve an immediate crisis. And for this I’m supposed to agree to mortgage my children’s future? It greatly disturbs me to see the President retreat into divisive campaign rhetoric. I resent being referred to as an obstructionist because I don’t support this legislation. What I am is an American citizen, a taxpayer, who thinks this is too important an issue to be resolved by partisan politics. If the United States Congress can’t come up with
bi-partisan agreement that addresses first and foremost our immediate crises, and treats fairly all segments of American society, than whatever passes I will consider a failure.

Pal, we were lied to. The Dems that voted for the war in Iraq believed the W. Administration’s lies about “we are absolutely positive they have WMD and we know exactly where they are…”
They didn’t vote to go to war because Saddam was a bad guy…they trusted W. and Cheney, and Powell on the WMD issue. And we were taken for a boondoggle.

Temper, temper Mr President. Relax, it has not even been a month yet. Just wait for the “Change” and “Hope” people. Listen, the Democrats did not even want to play ball with the GOP the last 4 years. Quit kicking your can and show us your nuts. They will vote yes or no.

“Welcome to the world of politics silky. Fear was being used then, just like it is being used now.”
There’s a difference between using fear and intentionally misleading Congress, and the world for that matter, into approving the invasion and occupation of another country, which resulting in tens of thousands of fatalities (or more), including 4000+ Americans.

Saddam had them in the past (he destroyed them he said) and the british were sure he was trying to acquire more. I don’t recall reading the word “free” in the stimulus plan and I don’t recall hearing President Obama or anyone other than Republicans use the word “free” to describe helping Americans who have been terminated from their jobs because of unfair trade practices, mismanagement of tax payers money by government officials, and policies that allowed business to make money off of Americans, but take their jobs to countries that allowed them to exploit their people so they could gain global clot. We all know that nothing is free, but salvation and Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for us all for that. Therefore, if you are a Republican who call yourself a Christian and oppose helping people because to you it is giving people “free” opportunities at the expense of big business, then you are a hypocrite, because you accepted what Jesus Christ did for you freely. What if He told Father God that He wasn’t into giving salvation freely because it would cost Him his life. He knew that what He gave us freely, He would be given of Father God freely and that is LIFE! Think about it! If you still feel the same then stop being a Christian, because you became that way by what was given to you freely.

Dave; It’s every American’s constitutional right to be free to pursue happiness. There are no guarantees of success. Happiness is there for you to find on your own Obi Wan. Happiness is an outer manifestation of joy within. To be joyful we must simply count our blessings instead of concentrating on the things we don’t have which spawns greed and envy. When we focus on the wonder of what we have we become joyful and appear happy. If you wisha to succeed you musta focus.

Dave:
Contrary to popular uninformed opinion, most of the people who are on welfare are young white women. Check the statistics. Percentage wise it looks like a lot of people of color, but when you consider the population breakdown there are more white people on welfare than other people. Now with the unemployment rate going up, the percentage will increase. White people will demand their government help then and then everyone will be helped. Whose getting laid off. Black people have been out of work and they have found ways to make it. What’s going to happen to people who are not accustomed to doing without. Dave, what do you think will happen in this country then or do you even care. If social uphevel can be disauade, why are you so against it? The people who will have to do with out are not like the people who endured the Great Depression (patient and resiliant). What we have is a generation of must have it now and they will not hesitate to take it. What is your answer to that? You had better consider the social implications because in desparate times, desparate people do desparat things.

You aren’t going to call me a liar and an idiot again, are you?
Bill Clinton-1998 speech
“Saddam Hussein has spent the better part of this decade and much of his nation’s wealth not on providing for the Iraqi people but on developing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and the missiles to deliver them….I know I speak for everyone in this chamber, Republicans and Democrats, when I say to Saddam Hussein, “You cannot defy the will of the world,” and when I say to him, “You have used weapons of mass destruction before. We are determined to deny you the capacity to use them again.”

Dave:
“Going to war with a man who endorsed torturing his olympic team for bad performance, tortured his own civilian people in hundreds of torture chambers throughout the country, and murdered 700,000 people with chemical weapons he never had was wrong how?”
Yes. Saddam was a bad guy. If that was the justification to go to war, we wouldn’t have gone in. And US intelligence was TOTALLY cherry-picked for anything to benefit going in, but contrary evidence, i.e. forged documents that the CIA knew were forged (Niger, Joe Wilson, etc…) were spewed out by W. in his State of the Union address- even after they had been discredited.
Or if the “bad guy status” is our Country’s new justification for war, then heck, let’s go into Venezuela, N Korea, Iran, and plently of other countries!!!! I, for one, reject that ideology.
And, as to the 700,000 number of people gassed- that’s a B.S. number.
From wikipedia:
The Halabja poison gas attack occurred in the period 16–17 March 1988, during the Iran-Iraq War. Chemical weapons (CW) were used by the Iraqi government forces in the Iraqi Kurdish town of Halabja, killing thousands of people, most of them civilians (3,200-5,000 dead on the spot and 7,000-10,000 injured[1]). Thousands more died of horrific complications, diseases, and birth defects in the years after the attack.[2]
Yes, he was a bad guy. But did we go in to “save” the Iraqi people from Saddam? That was not the reason given for going to war. Can you get that point thru your thick skull????
Posted by: nja | February 6, 2009, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm
What’s your point, dave? Clinton does not say there that he thinks Saddam has nuclear weapons. And he never even hinted at the possibility of a US invasion and occupation of Iraq.
“You aren’t going to call me a liar and an idiot again, are you?”

He murdered 5,000 people, huh?
What are you talking about.
This is from 2004. Since then, we have had 5 more years of finding saddam’s victims (something you probably didn’t read about on your favorite websites- daily kos, huffington post.
Since the Saddam Hussein regime was overthrown in May, 270 mass graves have been reported. By mid-January, 2004, the number of confirmed sites climbed to fifty-three. Some graves hold a few dozen bodies—their arms lashed together and the bullet holes in the backs of skulls testimony to their execution. Other graves go on for hundreds of meters, densely packed with thousands of bodies.
“We’ve already discovered just so far the remains of 400,000 people in mass graves,” said British Prime Minister Tony Blair on November 20 in London. The United Nations, the U.S. State Department, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch (HRW) all estimate that Saddam Hussein’s regime murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people. “Human Rights Watch estimates that as many as 290,000 Iraqis have been ‘disappeared’ by the Iraqi government over the past two decades,” said the group in a statement in May. “Many of these ‘disappeared’ are those whose remains are now being unearthed in mass graves all over Iraq.”

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of Americans are extremely angry with the GOP’s incompetence and obstructionism and don’t WANT the GOP to get their grubby paws all over this bill and mess things up again.
You goddamn Republican whiners need to stop snivelling and think about your OWN party’s behavior when you were in power. Where was your “bipartisanship” then?
Besides, Obama gave the Congressional Republicans plenty of time to voice their views last week. He went out of his way to meet with them repeatedly and offer real bipartisanship – and then those obstructionist fools turned their backs on him and didn’t give him a single vote.
So you can go screw yourself with your pathetic claptrap.

CBO: Obama stimulus harmful over long haul

Just because you come from more backwards part of Europe does not mean that government cannot be a force for good in people’s lives. Maybe the problem is that you come from a country where people are too cyncical and criminal minded to appreciate good government.

I wonder at the people who are forced to resort to name calling and insults to make a point or to dispute one.
The stimulus bill is necessary to stabilize the economy. No one can honestly deny that. The problem is that the bill in it’s present form contains far too much pork. $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts won’t help you much unless you’re a ballet dancer or a pianist. $400 million to study global warming won’t put a lot of people to work either neither will writing a check to GM without expecting anything in return.
The money would be much better spent to rebuild our infrastructure before more bridges fall into the rivers they span. Hiring more border patrol agents will put people to work and require GM and the rest to call back workers to build more cars and trucks for those border guards. $2.4 billion (that’s billion with a ‘B’) for Carbon-capture demonstration projects seems a little wasteful since no one can even tell me exactly what that is. We must not need it very bad.
The biggest spending bill in history has turned into the biggest pork bill in history and stinks as much as the hog farm. The money needs to be spent, but not where a lot of it is going.

Hi Jenna,
Please reread what I wrote. According to history, which Europeans have a habit of forgetting and distorting, the Irish, Italians, and other post civil war Europeans were not exactly welcomed with a red carpet in this country. Many of them were treated cruely and had to fight for what they got. I am sure they appreciated the opportunity to come, but were hurt when their European brethern were not as accommadating to them. The Germans, even those who were communist were quite welcomed because of their scientific knowledge. After all the United States allowed some of the scientists to work on top secret projects knowing they did terrible things to other human beings and developed weapons that were used against our troops. If people aren’t taught forgiveness it turns into bitterness and revenge.

I still want to know what a ‘Carbon-Capture Demonstration Project’ is. Sounds to me like somebody’s ‘brother-in-law’ hand out.
They need to tear this bill up and start all over. This time keep it on track, without pork and with both sides of the aisle working together. They know what America needs and what the American people want. We need transportation, energy, border security, education, water supplies and waste disposal and a lot of other things.
We don’t need a $75 million super computer for NOAA or $650 million to help people switch to digital TV.

They should list every project in order of importance, eliminate the bottom half, then double what they plan to spend on infrastructure. Add a small corporate tax cut (we have the highest corporate rate in the western world) and I think it would pass in a landslide – at a significantly lower cost. But what do I know…

Thank you for logical thought out suggestions. That’s what I have been getting it this entire time that I have been on the blog. The plan should be written in laymen’s terms, posted publically, and allow people to vote on what should be included the economic recovery packet. Prehaps President Obama should take a survey like this and make the results publically known and present to Congress a document generated by the people. What are your thoughts about this idea?

Jimmy-
The saddest part of it all is that this is just the beginning. One day we are just gonna wake up in the morning so we can just hand our paychecks over to the crooks and cheats we call our leaders.
This is a bad bill. I don’t disagree that some stimulus is needed. But this bill isn’t stimulus, plain and simple. I haven’t heard Republicans on this or any other site saying no stimulus bill at all, they are just saying not THIS bill. I hate to get all Kumbayaa on folks (sorry if I misspelled that), but name calling each other is only feeding the partisanship in Washington. If we can’t quit calling each other names, how can we dare expect the same from them? Most Americans are pretty well in agreement that politicians are crooks, and that goes from the Prez on down. Turning against each other because we have ideologies that determine a party we have more in common with, is counter-productive. If we all stuck together, as Americans to demand better of Washington, they will not be able to ignore us. None of them are working for you and I, they are working for their next election, and next paycheck from the next deep pockets special interest that comes along. Dems and Repubs in Washington are behind ALL of this. Not JUST one or the other. This same government (the same guys are in charge at the SEC as when Bush was Prez) couldn’t even “oversee” Wall Street, but here we want to turn over control of over a TRILLION dollars (once it’s all done) to these same people that couldn’t simply oversee what was going on on Wall Street, and cannot account for massive amounts of the TARP??? Give me a break.

Mims,
Kinda like Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. The key words there are missing from Washington… Common Sense.
That would be a great idea, but there is too much pork hiding in that bill for any one in Washington to actually draft a document that normal people can read.

“The plan should be written in laymen’s terms, posted publically, “
That should be done with every bill considered in Congress. The Stimulus Package is so lengthy that few if any on Capital Hill have read all of it. Even those who contributed to it haven’t read all of it. A simplified version or even several smaller bills should be considered.
Public vote would take too long and cost as much as a general election so it would be a bit impractical. It would be great if it could be done.

Jessica,
Don’t you think it’s worth a try. I am going to email Change.gov and make the suggestion.

Jimmy-
The saddest part of it all is that this is just the beginning.
True, true, true!! Get ready for more pork on Monday when Geithner comes in with another bill.
Just a thought, wouldn’t it be lovely if our officials were held to the same standards we are? How about paying your taxes? I would love to see if the IRS would be so forgiving to us like not paying fees and interest. Before I get attacked by others here (which I am sure I will) this is a citizenship issue that connects us all. There are 2 hthings in life that are sure: death and taxes!

Woohoo! Ford announced they will manufacture and sell 5000 energy efficient vehicles next year. That explains the replacement of our current fleet of government vehicles included in the bill. More bailout money for Detroit and effectively the labor union votes. Obama asks why wouldn’t the American taxpayers want to upgrade to more energy efficient vehicles? Because we can see through the smokescreen, sir. The obvious objection to such an upgrade is the same reason we can’t afford energy efficient vehicles for ourselves. They aren’t cost effective. They cost too much.

True. Isn’t it a bailout to Detriot a bailout to the Union? What makes their business more important than others? Wachovia employed more people than GM. Do GM employees have more rights than the rest of us?
If this mentality were around in the 70′s we would have had a bailout for 8track players. Just a thought.

With all the Talent and I high-powered intellect ‘here on this board’, it’s obvious many of you could have this ‘economic problem’ turned around in a ‘flash.’ How many of you “Economic/Financial Wizards” have submitted your ‘Res zoo mays’ to the Congress???
Posted by: bobj72 | February 6, 2009, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm
To Oonogi:
Actually, it doesn’t have to be costly. Why in the world do we have the Internet, textmessaging, and telephones. People can go on the Internet and respond to a survey. An electronic monitoring system that allows people to respond to the survey once is plausible. I am sure some wiz kid whose brain is wired for modern day and futuristic technoloy has already developed a program that would accommodate the matter. It’s worth a try. If we, the people don’t insist our government works for us without offering excuses then it’s our own fault when things don’t happen for the good of all Americans. It’s time out for rhetoric and it’s time for action. It’s interesting how people agree a good idea is a good idea, and then talk about how it’s not possible. It is possible. Anything that we think or imagine is possible. I have submitted my suggestion to Change.gov and I hope they seriously consider it and act on.

What I’m against is spending money we don’t have. None of these congress people are economics experts nor have they had any hearings to get imput from economists to proceed in an intelligent manner instead of just “throwing money at it”. To hurry a process like this is irresponsible and we all are going to pay for it with higher inflation. It will rob our savings for education and retirement and we’ll be worse off than we are now.
It’s a known fact that small business creates most of the new jobs in the country and tax cuts could help business retain or employ more people, that would seems a logical place to start. Money for Endowment of the Arts, STD’s, money being poured into government instead of “stimulating” the private sector is wrong. We are creating/enlarging programs we can’t afford with money we don’t have and won’t be able to sustain without more debt. I want all of the United States to succeed.

“A plan by Republicans in the Senate aimed at pushing mortgage rates lower has gone down to defeat at the hands of Democrats. The plan by Nevada Republican John Ensign would have encouraged banks to issue mortgages with interest rates of 4 to 4.5 percent.
The plan also contained an assortment of expensive tax cuts such as cutting the bottom 10 percent income tax rate in half for two years.
Democrats killed the idea Thursday night by a 62-35 vote.
For all of the people out there asking for money because of the housing crisis, please thank your Democrat leaders for not offering you anything in this “stimulus” (spending) plan. Also, cutting the bottom 10 percent income taxes, is something that no American worker could’ve possibly used right?
Democrats killed the idea Thursday night by a 62-35 vote.

I’m quite happy that our government is throwing more money into another black hole. Do you really believe any stimulus package will work? Just ain’t gonna happen, Jack.
Let greed prevail and the financial orgies continue. Long live the Madoffs, Thains, Halliburtons, and Enrons. All for me and none for you. The REAL spirit of Capitalism.
Apparently, nothing was learned from the TARP bailout. Did we really expect any kind of sanity when it comes suckling on the giant teat of our government. Come on now. Really! Drink up, or you’ll lose your place.
All this hastens the extinction of the hairless ape. Humans don’t deserve this planet. TOO stupid, TOO aggressive, TOO perverted, TOO greedy.
Hey, it was fun while it lasted…

This stimulus bill is a farce.Over 90 % of the things that are being asked for is pure PORK.There really isn’t too much to really help the people that are losing their homes and jobs.I thought thats what the stimulus bill was suppose to be for. Instead it is helping bail out all the big companies, to help them have their BIG bonuses.I think Pres. Obama should tell these companies to give the money back to the American people that deserve it.Look at Maldoff, no one is going after him, he is just sitting in his penthouse laughing. Our government is a pushover for lobbyists and elitest. When will they get somne backbone and demand as accounting for all our money being handed out indiscriminately.
Posted by: 63texan | February 6, 2009, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm
63texan…”90% PORK”? How so? And keeping businesses afloat saves jobs. I don’t know if you’ve watched the news lately…but those are dissapearing, rather quickly.
And, if they gave you a bag of money, would you spend it, or stuff your mattress? Most would do that latter, which does nothing to,”STUMULATE”,the economy…

“Bob,first off your spelling is atrocious! So I don’t know if your level of intelligence merits a reasonable response.” Aw… what the heck.
You say; “Does Obama have any class whatsoever it doesnt seem like it. If the bailout is so important whay was every other sentence a joke. We have an unqaulified man in office and I hope he wakes up soon and starts acting like a president.”
I say; “If your intent was to confound the participants here, you were greatly successful.” But your attempt at using the english language was a bust!

I say; “billy bob, You’re an unreasonable, childish, loser. “Unreasonable” because you have NO reasoned rationale to assume President Barack Obama “thinks he is a king.”
And if you present yourself as an American who voted for a functioning centrist govt., That is Simply an outlandish LIE. (You DID NOT vote for the candidate who was closer to Center!)
You are “Childish” because you accuse others of ‘name calling’, when in-fact that’s precisely what you do.
And you’re a “Loser” simply because you supported the Palin/McCain ticket in 2008.
